There are many different causes that are influencing us during the course of our lives or at the moment of birth and all of those need to be taken into account so that astrology is not necessarily the final matter or the final word on the matter, so that's kind of like one example where he's approaching that partially because of his causal views of astrology and how that alters his thinking, but there are also other astrologers like Dorothea of sidon, for example, who didn't necessarily use a causal view of astrology instead it seemed to be more omen based of astrology acting as a form of divination, where it's a language that's sending signs and symbols about the future, but one of the things that Dorothea did is in the first four books of his work, he practiced natal astrology and showed you how to read birth charts, but then it in book 5, he has an entire book on inception astrology and electional astrology where you choose different movements in the future that are going to be more or less auspicious for certain outcomes and underlying that is the idea that if the alignment of the planets can indicate the outcome of something then you may be able to choose one day that's better for something you want to accomplish or another day that's worse. So you may be able to alter the trajectory of fate to some extent. Right, yeah, and so on the

"That's good. Actually, I will say, I will say gremlins again. Yeah, the second time this episode. This definitely happens in gremlins. You're trying to blend the gremlins, but you forgot to put the top on so you just get gremlin guts everywhere. Yeah, you're covered in gremlin goo. So because individually, some of these combinations would be a little bit tricky just on their own. Mercury Neptune conjunctions can be at the best case like difficulties with communication, a lack of clear communication, sometimes it can coincide with communication that's not accurate or is even deceptive in some way, whereas mercury Mars squares can be like arguments fighting, Discord, harsh words, and different things like that. So it's like when you put all these together, I think that's individually they would be a little bit tricky, but when you put them together, it starts getting really complicated. That's been something I've been thinking about a lot in terms of sometimes having best transits when it's a good idea to keep your head down to avoid the worst case scenarios of those manifestations versus other times when obviously you can't avoid it and there's something that you get dragged into that fits the manifestation of that, even if you try to avoid it, it's an interesting interplay that astrologers from a sociological standpoint like constantly have to deal with in terms of what is the line between those two things and knowing the difference between them and sometimes they're being an ambiguity about what situation or what scenario you find yourself in. Yeah, yeah. Well, yeah, and to a certain degree, I should say, there are ways to see in the chart, whether it's something you have to do or whether it's just there if you want it on a lived level. It's like, okay, there's a terrible storm that's happening. And you don't have to go outside. So don't go outside versus you are in the middle of surfing and a terrible storm starts happening. You have to navigate the storm to get back to shore. And understanding how best to work with the environment you find yourself in, you know, is a necessity. However, if you're outside and you see a terrible storm and be like, maybe it's not a great time to surf. It won't go out on the water. Right? Yeah, I think it's really important and it's interesting thing of sometimes seeing either a bad election chart or a bad set of transits and not having the perception that practically speaking anything should go wrong but the astrology itself telling you something will probably be not good about the outcome of this if you choose to and how often the astrology is still ends up being correct in that being another interesting lesson that astrology is like learning during the course of their careers and have to figure out how to navigate. Yeah, yeah. And I think one piece of that navigation comes back to a very simple question of which planets, sphere, are you operating within? This is one of the things that Dorothea says apply to all elections. Is think about what kind of thing you're doing and what's going on with that planet, right? And so in this case, mercurial things are probably the worst things to be doing. Whereas if we look at Venus for a lot of the month, Venus is in good enough condition, it's never fantastic. This episode was originally part of our August 2019 theme, villainesses. Today's villainous is known by many names. The death house landlady, the Black Widow of Sacramento, and the grandma serial killer. While she was still at large, she was simply known as a sweet community loving old woman. Once she was caught, it became clear she spent much of her life lying and stealing before murdering victims for their money. I love that this episode proves the old adage. It's always the people you don't expect. Now here's host Jenny Kaplan to talk about Dorothea puente. Dorothea Helen gray was born in 1929 in Redlands, California. She was the second youngest of her 7 siblings. Her family was poor and struggled even more when Dorothea's father died of tuberculosis when she was just 8 years old. The following year, Dorothea and her siblings were removed from their mother's custody because their mother was an alcoholic. Dorothea's childhood was then spent living with different relatives and foster families. When she turned 16, she moved to Olympia, Washington, and worked as a prostitute. A few years later, she met and married her first husband. The pair moved to Nevada, where Dorothea had two kids in two years. But she quickly decided that that life wasn't for her. In 1948, she put both children up for adoption and divorced her husband. She moved to San Bernardino, California, spent a few months in jail for falsifying a check and got remarried. Dorothea and her second husband moved together to Sacramento. Her second pass at married life was tumultuous, thanks in no small part to her cheating, drinking and gambling. And she got divorced again in 1966. In 1968, she met and married Roberto puente. Her third and final husband, day two, separated in 1969. That same year, she opened her first boarding house. Dorothea's boarding house earned her a place of respect in the community. She housed alcoholics and drug addicts who no one else would. She gained a rapport with social workers for helping with such cases, and further bolstered her reputation by donating money to local political campaigns and charities. She met multiple California governors, including Ronald Reagan, and she claimed she met vice president Spiro Agnew and Clint Eastwood. But underneath its altruistic facade, Dorothea's first boarding house was a much darker place. She stole her tenants benefits checks by forging their signatures. In 1978, she got caught, was sentenced to 5 years of federal probation, and was banned from owning a boarding house moving forward. In 1982, Dorothea's business partner and roommate Ruth Monroe, mysteriously died from an overdose of codeine in Tylenol. Dorothea claimed that Ruth was depressed and authorities officially ruled the death of suicide. But Ruth's family disagreed and suspected that Dorothea was responsible. Unable to own a boarding house, Dorothea worked as an in home caregiver. She drugged multiple clients and stole money and valuables from their homes. She got caught once again, and wound up in prison. Her sentence was originally 5 years, but it was reduced to three for good behavior. That's despite the fact that a state psychologist warned that Dorothea was dangerous and unapologetic. When she got out in 1985, Dorothea moved in with 77 year old Everson Gilmore, a pen pal from her time in prison. In November, Dorothea hired a handyman to build her a coffin sized box. Two months later, a fisherman recovered that box from a nearby river. Inside, police discovered a decomposing body. Three years later, it was identified as Everson Gilmore. In the meantime, Dorothea impersonated Everson in letters to his family and collected his pension. The following year Dorothea opened her second boarding house. Again, Dorothea red tenant's male and stole their social security checks. In 1988, one of Dorothea's tenants, Alvaro Montoya, disappeared. When Alvaro social worker reported him missing, police visited Dorothea to question her. They found disturbed soil in the backyard and discovered 7 buried bodies. Good evening, everyone. It happened around 10 o'clock this morning when Sacramento police went to a house at 1426 F street. They were responding to numerous tips which led them to believe a human body was buried in the backyard of the house. It turns out the tips were right. Neighbors of the F street house described or theft one day as an eccentric but caring person. She's a very good person. She's nice to everyone. While Dorothea wasn't initially a suspect, she fled to Los Angeles, rousing suspicion. Dorothy, I know if we dig, we're going to find more. I have never killed anybody in my life. And who did kill somebody? She was eventually charged for 9 deaths, including the deaths of Ruth Monroe and Everson Gilmore. She was found guilty for three of the murders and received two life sentences for her crimes. Dorothea maintained her claims of innocence until she died in prison in 2011. She was 82 years old. So some of these people, the photographer, Dorothea Lange, the Medal of Honor recipient William Harvey Kearney, who is a veteran of the Civil War. Are they particular people that you hope you can give a boost to their profile and you think deserve a larger profile? Well, I think the two you mentioned are great. I mean, exactly right. The story of the nation is shaped by people known in a known people in power and far from it. There's this mysterious but discernible calculus where the largely powerless ultimately come to the attention of those who hold temporal power and in that calculus, hopefully, God willing the world has made more just and so recipient first black man to receive the Medal of Honor because of action at fort Wagner in South Carolina. Vitally important the sacrifice the bravery of black union soldiers bring the Civil War is one of the great stories in American history, not as widely appreciated. Frederick Douglass believed and Lincoln came to accept that if you allowed black men to take up arms, they would prove themselves worthy and that as Douglass said, once they get brass eagle and the initials U.S. on their shoulder, no force on earth will deny them citizenship. That was a little hopeful because of the long history of postwar segregation. But Douglas was largely right about that. Dorothy, the mom might have scolded him, but she was just so happy that he was alive. And she told him that he had frightened her. The story says her hands wouldn't bring themselves to whip the boy. January check had been having a difficult time, too. Since his father left. They, Dorothea, roll the other hat. She wouldn't drive him away by disciplining him. That boys would be boys and all that. Yannick knew just how far to push his mother, though. And when he went too far, he would make her favorite dish. Mushrooms and strawberries probably not mixed together, but who knows? Anyway, one morning, he paid in advance because Dorothea woke to find the steaming mushroom sitting next to a bowl of berries. You know? Maybe they were turning a corner here. Perhaps her plan of never disciplining him and just waiting for him to be different was working out. Then she heard the screams. Her son. Someone dragged him from the deep pool. Yannick had drowned. Dorothy wailed, as the villagers laid the body down before her. The townspeople weren't saying she should have set boundaries and disciplined him at least a little. Because with the death of her son, that would be too soon. They would say it later, though. Then, they look to the boy and the body was gone. The people looked around frantically, but there wasn't any evidence of Yana check in the fields. The swamp, town, or forest. It was like he disappeared. Then they looked inside the house that was like ten feet away from where he had been laying. And found him finishing off the mushrooms and strawberries. Of course, they freaked out and ran, because sure, he must be a ghost and not the kid who messed with them relentlessly and prank them like four times a week. This time, Dorothy stood incensed. Sure, he had lied to her and scared her, but he was eating her mushrooms and strawberries. Yana check had finally gone too far. The water demon, the vodnik, take you. The bowl in the wooden spoon slid across the table at a Dorothy. As Yana check was about to say that, okay, he could see that she was mad. But his non apology was interrupted. There was someone else. Listening. It shall be so. Both mother and son spun to look at the window. And they found a face looking back at them. Scaly, but glowing in the moonlight. It wasn't human. It was the vodnik. Dorothy stood paralyzed. But Jana checks shook his head. No one's scared his mother but him. He grabbed a walking stick and threw open the door with his shoulder. Feet digging into the dirt path as he chased the vodnik. The creature flippy flapping his way to the water's edge, with a massive head start. "Images themselves without having to spend a ton of money, right? For much less money than you would on the F two 8 version. So I think it's a cool little idea and you know if you don't have a longer zoom right now that you really like and that you really trust, this one could fit the bill nicely. It's a good little review and there's more on it. I only read you a little bit of it. There's more on it in the link to it is in the show notes. Dorothea Lange, words in pictures. So I found this article on a lens culture, and I have a link to it and show notes. And this is basically an article about a show that ran at the Museum of Modern Art back a couple years ago. In 2020, and there's a book out for the museum book is available on Amazon. I have a link to it in the show notes. So if you're intrigued by the little bit I'm going to talk about here, you can get the book and you can read the entire article that has a lot of pictures on lens culture dot com. But the idea here is about having pictures in words work together in the photographs. Let me read you what this author says from lens culture and we'll take it from there. It starts out with a quote or at least the part that I'm quoting here. All photographs can be fortified by words Lang wrote, for her words could extend the power of an image, not just causing an emotional response, but also urging the viewer not only to see but to read, to listen carefully. She wrote that her image caption should carry not only factual information, but also added clues to attitudes, relationships, and meanings. Calling those captions connective tissue, some of her image titles exhibit a matter of factness dry wit on the road to Los Angeles, California, 1937, features two men walking down a dirt road toward a billboard advertising to take the train next time. It goes on and on. There are many examples I should say where she you used words either in the image itself or as part of the caption to kind of create a more full bodied experience. All right, back to the author. The power of words also extended beyond image titles to encompass the voice of her subjects, while photographing Lang took copious field notes on her assignments recording where when and who she was depicting in what they had to say. The exhibition, and that's the one from two years ago, shines a light on these collections and how impairing the photographs with the subject's own words laying empowered their voices. The end papers of her book in American exodus, which she worked on with her husband, the agricultural economist, Paul Taylor, hold the words of her subjects. Upon entering the gallery, these words feature prominently as an introduction to the images on view, giving voice to the protagonists of her work. One last paragraph here. Throughout the show, wall techs enriches the images with fragments of Lang's own notes and extended quotes from those she photographed. This combination of words and pictures hits both head and heart. The photographs touch the viewer, but the words allow them to do more than that. They shine a light on the injustices of the wider world to experience in fact. They also illuminate the inner thoughts and methods of a photographer committed to bringing change to the world with the tools at hand. And as I mentioned, the book from this show, which I just, I haven't seen the book physically, but I was looking at some pages of it on the catalog is available and I have a link to it in the show notes. That really kind of dig into this whole idea of words and pictures working together. Not only in the pictures themselves, but also thinking about the titles and the captions that you may want to put with your pictures to create this richer experience that shines more light on your images. I just thought it was something really worth thinking about. It's something that I particularly think about when I'm doing street photography and working with signs and things like that, but then also spending some time on my captions, making sure I have that information correct.
