"Pm eastern on espn radio doris. Good morning thanks for joining us. And as we've been discussing this matchup it's it's not necessarily just about who's there but who might not be there. We don't expect you honest tonight and we don't know how much be honest. The books are gonna get in this. Finals is is a determining factor of whether or not the bucks can win this championship. Well i mean obviously a two time. Mvp would help strengthen any lineup But what's interesting is you know. We're sitting here wondering or at least i. Is this similar to or where you know. The specter of colli was hanging over the western conference finals. But there was very little chance that he was going to play You know we. We believed that he would not play in that series. And that was our expectation. Here i feel a little less certain of whether janas is going to make an appearance And they're you know. Obviously they have to play a little bit differently and drew holiday and khris middleton. I i love the note on the update about. They've sat for a combined. Twenty two minutes since yarmuth says went out. It gives you a sense of of the load. That khris middleton true are are carrying db participate participant exercise of me. When i say when i say a name i would love to hear doris. Burks unfiltered thoughts. You ready beck again. Well listen. I go way back with becky and You know obviously. I'm chris podcasts. The only fresh the frustration. I had listened. I think hiring a head coach is a difficult job for innovation. So let me state that at the outset jay. And i'm sorry i'm giving you probably a longer answer that you want nowhere. It's it's one of the most important decisions and organization can make and i don't think any of the decisions you know gm's make as it relates to picking draft all these things none of it's an exact science my frustration Really had everything to do with in all of my time covering the nba You know i've i've known. Many assistant coaches across the league couve been interviewed for jobs and not gotten those jobs and the one criticism. I've which i think is always fair is oh you know he so and so didn't interview well and i don't think there's any one of us who hasn't been in a position of maybe interviewing per position. The very first real job i interviewed for i was a complete and utter disaster. And i have the call the gentleman at providence. Who got me the interview and said say i just embarrassed you and make you know. I'm sorry for that what i have never heard jay and this is where my frustration came from is is someone You know questioning or cabinet and ability about someone who didn't get the job. The most i had heard was oh he did not interview well so my frustration was what what sort of was spilled out about becky hammon in the aftermath of an interview which then could take toll Should she get involved in other head. Coaching searches in the future. So that was long winded. I'm not sure what you're going for their exactly. But you know my my association with becky goes back to my coverage of women's college basketball when she was colorado state and and leading sort of this incredible run through through an ncw tournament. That was unexpected. Alley ask outdoors. Because you know having a relationship with the spurs all i hear about is how hard and how relentless becky hammon is and how her attention to detail is something that is so superb so it it kind of struck me the same way struck you. When i heard that kind of come out of somebody's take and i think that's just so disappointing that that becomes a narrative from somebody's truly i interview for an opportunity. Exactly right. jay was at the end of rapid-fire i was i good morning doors. We wanna turn back to. Tonight's game and i'm curious. Obviously honest is a big piece of the puzzle but in terms of players that are going to be on the floor. What do you think is going to be the most important matchup. Well i think first and foremost monica. I have to say clearly. Don't get the concept of rapid fire. And then i would say you know. It's hard for me not to look directly at the point guard. Position right chris. Paul signature has been all over. This phoenix suns season. You know obviously devon and de'andre aiden and mikhail. Bridges have all played beyond their years and monte spent so much time. And i love talking about sort of poison emotional maturity and and all the the mental aspects of competing in the postseason. But you have to look at chris. Paul who has Obviously had such a profound influence between the lines outside the lines on this team. Attention to detail being prepared for what to expect in these moments and then drew holiday. Who you know. What's what's interesting to me when all these all defensive teams are named year after year after year. There's always some grumbling if drew is not made the first team amongst his his contemporaries because over the years the consistency. My i've heard this guy is the best perimeter defender out there. And so you know. I'm anxious to watch that. What's fascinating to me is phoenix. Has you know two elite mid range guys who get to their spots chris. Paul and devon booker middle of the floor getting to their spots Consistently knocking down tough twos boxes. And they'll both what i think wins a lot of times in the playoffs. And they have two guys who are elite at that you know do Do the milwaukee bucks play dropped coverage as much as they did in the regular season or do they do. They pulled brook lopez up a little bit more play. Small a little bit more but the primary matchup. I'm looking at is chris. Paul andrew holiday tonight to start the series. That's for sure it's definitely going to be one door sport joining us on the goodyear hotline espn analyst. Who's on the call tonight. Game one begins coverage begins.

"Man to do what you gotta do. You fit the perfect bill of the neuner right. I mean look delight on my time. That what they're talk about sits at have. Yeah say that to what right to say. Hey baby you're on my type. Sure they are ok. Sure let me tell you. A few things that are undefeated and one of them happens to be. The gals are undefeated. When it comes to that brother. I you don't control it. I love those guys really you want. You want to shape up real quick when they decide. I'm cutting you off. I love you honey. I love you baby right now. You don't control squad brother at especially when you have a baby. Joe's finding out you definitely don't control squat. You stand in line for that my man because mama baby you mama baby thirty the baby you maybe like mother exactly right sports talks. Daddy shot joe. George here tyler. Produce it it as he always. Does this coming right back. Sportstalk seventy we will hear from doris burke about james harden and stephen silas as we roll forward and give our final picks and previews and john clayton will join us and forty five minutes about this game coming up this weekend. Maybe it doesn't matter to us but it does matter because it's another step in the victory process if they can pull it off for the houston texas. They all matter sport socks. Natty i in. The sean salisbury show continues sportstalk seven ninety a lot of james harden and talk out there and before we get to brian here in houston Let's doris burke has such a great approach. She's the ability to be critical when necessary. But do it without making anything personal and she so she always sees both side and ways. So i think she's fabulous. I do i and for anybody out there saying well. She only got the job. Because not true doris. Burke is a pro's pro who could go broadcast anything when it comes to basketball. It wouldn't matter what it is she do. It and kick ass was a high school basketball game. Men's women's college hoops nba. She's she's fantastic. And when she interviews when she interviews people on the court side to sometimes when she's like when with the if the number one like van courtside reporter like in a playoff game she is. She actually asked a question that i that i think the answer matters. Yes she gets the knows how to ask the question to get an actual right and not open in ask and also precise. Doris burks fabulous. Well here's what she says on how she number thirteen tired. It's about a buck twenty. Two brian hang on. We'll get to you that this is worth hearing on. Why she feels for stephen silas in this situation. This is a great doris burke. The person i feel for stephen silas. And i think when i when i've interacted with stephen the one thing that strikes you is how even temperate he seems to be doesn't get too high doesn't get too low as been highly respected for such a long time but consider that john wall. I think his first full practice was their opening practice for the first time since december of two thousand eighteen like john wall hopes to become that all star player and as impactful as he was. You know same with demarcus cousins yet. You're talking about two guys with this extraordinarily steep hill to climb to get back to where they were as all stars and the fact that stephen is trying to go back to a more traditional defense where you're playing with big that he was in charge of the single most efficient offense in nba history last year and all centered around the player. Like luca touching the paint renting it out in the loop. And now you've got this hovering. So you have to hope that james harden you know who's. Mvp candidacy has been rock solid for. What is it now. Six seven years. The guy's been extraordinary. It has to be about him carrying about his individual legacy. I think he loves to play. I think he loves the game. You've got gotta hope usa pro. See that last part there. Hope he's a pro and she doesn't mean pro because he's picked getting paid appro and we know that there's a different. Yeah shove word. That's exactly a good teammate. And and let the coach coach and let this team do it. And i love doors brooks approach. That's good stuff by doors brian. What's going on man how you doing. Hey john what's going on as long run. We're doing good. What's up man. I got a couple of You know. I wanna talk about james harden thing you know the easter bunny he needs to deliver baskets in another town other than that. Hey there's a new channel. i found on comcast john. I don't know if you've seen it before. You buy hardened thing here. I call real r. e. l. v. I no longer like. Yeah i know all about you know about that. So you seem like the documentaries on classic rock brands and all the time dude. I've done above and beyond real salt man. I didn't know anything. I don't know anything about jerry jones. I you know it's awesome. I love it yeah Anyway yeah james harden thing then look did we really want here in houston. He doesn't want to be here and to me he's just. He's denying extremely unprofessional. And just i don't know he looks like a little crybaby right now. You know you you when you got this much money. Get your ass out their employees and put him to not even called not even show up or nothing. I i don't know to me that's just not you know. If united at our jobs we get fired. You know what i mean. Just can't live live like that. And i don't think they can't either and i don't think it's fair to the houston bans after all the rockets and trying to give everything they've done for him. I mean i may be way off base. You know. I just don't think demands being managed. It's not being right at all. Well it professional and a person. I appreciate brian. I think a lot of people echo what you're saying mode to you got to realize. That's that's good so great documentaries in here a little brian. You're late to the party. Because i've been on a million over gonna reload all. They got a lot of good documentaries and stuff and old school rock bands but back to the hard thing. Joe i don. I don't think for one second that brian's off base when he says that fans feel betrayed base. Of course they do and but asking james. Here's what's not going to happen at this stage of his career. He's not gonna turn it all the sudden wake up one morning and become a leader. He is who he is. He's a great player. Who is a gym rat. Who quite frankly probably just as happy with an mvp as the championship. you're not going to diminish james harden career to james harden when it's all said and done if he doesn't have a ring but the rest of the people are gonna talk about man if he would've just done this burke saying be a well they're the same guy. Great listen to the best offensive. Get their shot offensive. Perform we've ever had on about sure that we've ever had and unfortunately both are going to leave the league without analyst james james's with brooklyn and he's the he'll leave the team at scoring or be close to katy but he's not the guy guys all the focus is on the exactly that's what he needed. Carmelo gets a ring now. It's because he's the guy that's exactly right. Yeah so it listen. This isn't personal heart. It's bothersome and if you're a fan you should be because you've sold out for james harden meaning everything he defended him to the end whether it's mvp or how good he is and then to come around here and say now. I don't wanna be here at this time that you'll you'll find about a lot about a person when things are going rough in an organization or.

"Doris burks lists of firsts is pretty incredible. First Woman said, call a men's college basketball game first woman to call a knicks. Game. Glory, tour. First woman to be a full time MBA analyst first woman to be an analyst during the NBA finals in any medium she was inducted into the basketball hall of fame in two thousand eighteen. How does she reflects on her career? She's Kinda shocked I. Think is the best way. because. Again, she didn't set out to do any of the. She didn't even set out for a broadcasting career. I like to say, my career broadcasting was very happy accident because I had no intention of being a broadcaster. In fact, if you could have seen me in college would find the notion that I am a broadcaster laughable and I think when she looks back on it, she's kind of like. How this all happen. But yet at the same time I, think she also understands it happened for the same reason that she got to play college basketball. She worked tail off and she earned it and I think she's coming around to the idea. As uncomfortable as she is with being this icon that matters for a lot of people and I think now she understands that the tide has turned that it is okay. To speak out, it is okay to speak up to use your voice in your power and your position in a way to help others and not think it's going to cost you anything like ESPN has her back the men who are playing the highest level of the game. Have they have her back doors burke? Is I Khan? He's done. I tend to talk about her and learned a lot from her. is an open door allow me so she understands it every time she crosses off list. There's somebody else somebody in college high school whatever who says I can because she did is there any sign of slowing down now? I I don't think so I mean you know the bubble I, think probably took its toll on everybody differently right being stuck in the NBA bubble took its toll on everybody more than it used to and I know she was anxious to just get home and do things like being her own kitchen and cook her a meal. But beyond that, no I think she is she's doing something. She's passionate about that. She's really good about her children are older. Why would you walk away and? I mean, yes, she I think she felt she's kind of almost. Say she's coming into her own because she's long been into her own but in terms of public perception, she's coming into her own and I think she's going to ride that wave as long as she can and I hope for all of us. It's a long time because she's really good at it. When lastly Dana what is Doris Burke hoping for in the future I think he's hoping for more view more of me. More of all of us. Right I think she's hoping that that we will get to a point where hiring a woman isn't something a company needs to do or that merits a press release or that you know if somebody has to like say Rah good for you you hired a woman coach or route look at you. You're so progressive you hired a woman adolescence. Kim like well. So she was really good and I hire and like she said, once we finally stop once you and I finally have to have this conversation. Then, we know we made it. Dana thank you so much for joining us. Thank you for having me. It could be the. "Cores light was the sponsor of that thing on Saturday. Carlo was Carl out there. Carlos icy was the one taking all the pictures. Yeah both of us around. All the I was I was following. That on on periscope. All right now come up next Damian. Lillard on saying he won't come back if the season resumes. That's coming up next for you. Bottom of the hour. Kevin O'Connor from the ringer on this whole concept of an Olympic style match-play concept for the NBA when it returns he's laid it all out and then five o'clock fasttrack is coming up for you. Mason Ireland Seventeen. Espn what Burger say. It's always great to be with. Legends LEGENDS LEGENDS. Makes me feel? Yeah does you know what it's great to be a legend but that does mean you've been around for a long time. He's he was as candidate as anybody in the beginning of that interview talking agree how how are you going to? It's not safe to put fans in the stands. Let him sit next to each other. But it's safe for guys to sweat and tackle and bleed on each other and I thought you gave them a good response that it has to do with the the numbers the size economics over safety when it comes to to A fair criticism. Yeah it's Paul where you gotta tackle somebody you know. So is a big deal this week. Dame Willard said. He's not interested in coming back. Because let's lay this out. So in order for teams to cash in on their regional television deals they need do played at least seventy games so the idea. Is that when coming back? They would meet a threshold of seventy games. Which means planned five or six regular season games? Damian Lillard said yesterday he's not interested in coming back if it's not for a playoff spot. Here's what he said today on Jalen and Jacoby like the way to story was written. It was taken out of context because it was a casual conversation And it was like expletive this expletive but it wasn't a demonstrative statement. I was just saying you know. We've been offered two months in. If we come back we WANNA play for something coming of After this type of bright usually when you come back you know especially with how fast we won't be jumping into playing you know. I think guys are at risk of injury also at risk of being exposed to whatever be no none of us have been around each other if every if so many teams are going to be in one spot so izzo many things out there that you know we could be at risk of so we're going to obviously as players. They WANNA play but we want play or something especially If we were in position to to play for that in the first place now he's walking back a little bit of what he said yesterday because there are going to be teams that come back with nothing at stake. You know Steph Curry. Who's been very vocal about the NBA? Returning this year You assume is going to play for the Golden State Warriors during these final five or six games even though there's nothing at stake they can't make the playoffs right. They're not mathematically eliminated yet are they are the wolves in the warriors mathematically eliminated maybe the only mathematically eliminated. Yeah if they only play five more would be so. But I haven't seen a scenario well first of all. Let me let me preface by saying that I love as you know I love Damian Lillard so does he's one of our favorite players in the league to call. He's one of our favorite players in the League to watch. He's just a great player. Really I mean just remember. We were at that game where The first game after the Kobe tragedy where Damian Lillard went off for for fifty. Yeah and he loves playing against the Lakers. He's really good against us. So let me preface anything. I say I love Dame but I haven't seen a scenario mace like. Let's take a look at the three plans that we've discussed so far today in the show and we got Kevin O'Connor coming up to go kind of do a deep dive on the World Cup plan but under the Ramona plan the World Cup plan or the Cuban plan. All three of those the blazers would have a chance to compete for a playoff spot. I haven't seen a scenario put in front of me not that it couldn't happen but I haven't seen one in which Portland would be eliminated regardless have you I have not while I mean Doris burks plan would be different. We'LL DOORS DORK plan would not entail dame coming back correct. It would be only. The teams that are in the play would return indoors or outdoors. Just wants to take the top sixteen eight from the east eight from the West and let's go start then. Play it out the exert in that. But that's not in in conflict of what Dame said that would mean Damien doesn't play any more games right sansern like his first choice when we come back and play and have a chance to win something and I admire that about a music. Gamer here is how he would design resuming the season. If I could I would know design some type of play in tournament between between our two teams that were in striking distance because you know Sacramento playing their best basketball season so was New Orleans on his over week in. None of those things were in the play but we were within striking. Distance would have games left in the season. A to catch memphis so for like a play tournament would will be partly just because we actually were striking distance. Also have enough games to get in the playoffs but going if if they did decide to go straight to the playoffs. Obviously we would be disappointed but this point we haven't performed to be in that top eight so estimates doing fine but if we just come back to to play games like that would make it harder on everybody else so in other words if it's just to come back to play games. He's not all in on that yet but I have not just me personally. I have not seen a plan that were that scenario would kick in every plan. I've seen would either eliminate the blazers in other words. The doors perk plan. Just bring back the the sixteen teams or if they came back and played. Portland would have an opportunity by the way.

"Now. Lindie how can I do for in the middle of a sense? No that's Mason. Burping you literally in the middle of a set time in doing late in the game it was late in the game that had to be Mason. Right don't think it had to be but Bush Mason knows the zoo and Ireland burp. That is the truth. This funny piece of sound. You sound late late in the game like try. Try Try and BURP and say late in the game and keep talking late in the game. Yeah you can't do it that was you other guy. I think it depends on where where the purpose and your sentence correct and I was right in the middle of a sentence. Articulated perfectly see you need to wash. There is no pause ridiculous. Duck out on late in the game but those are the types of questions. Dd how this one for mark did either of you know Jim Healy so any stories. I talk to Jimmy. Lee was the best radio announcer in Los Angeles for years. Legend years legends had a had a half hour news. Update show every day at five thirty in the old camp. I never met Jim but I have met his son. Patrick who is a news reporter at NBC Channel? Four and is a great guy and Patrick has all of his dad's old tapes. I always thought it would be fun. And you'd have to Patrick's permission probably pay a little bit. But I always thought it'd be fun to to maybe do. A healy highlight every day in in a show. If if I had to guess I would say around. Nineteen Ninety. Maybe a little nine. Maybe a little later but if I had to guess that's what I would say Jim Healy. Ninety was iconic mail. He was he was his. His show was part theater part news. It was like nobody else ever did anything like it was like listen to an old forties or fifties radio show one name. Maybe we can get package permission and play some of it. It it was ninety. Four is when he finished. He wrapped up his career. Nineteen ninety-four he was on this station. He was on seven ten. It was camp at that point. Seven ten camp unbelievable in must-listen before the Internet and before podcasts. Everybody would stop what they were doing. And listen to Healy. Every day at five thirty it was unbelievable like one of the great things of all time classic stuff and so no the answer is we ne- I never met him. I met Patrick but you never met Jim Right. I never met him. That would have been you. You've got here right around that I got here in ninety two so and Jim wrapped up in ninety four. Believe me I knew who he was because I was in on six hundred ninety and we competed against seven ten so they were competition so I knew who he was. In fact Lee. Hamilton went head to head with Jim. Healy and we knew elite. All right. How about this would you guys before or against this win the NBA resumes? The season is over. With the current standings. We immediately begin the playoffs and all playoff teams get two weeks of Training Camp. Then the normal playoff round start. What do you think yeah I would absolutely? I'M FOR ANYTHING? That will save this season. I am for anything that will save this season. I want there to be a season. I'm okay if we roll right into the playoffs. I would even get rid of the first round. You know if you want to. Just four or five game series. Yeah put four in the east and four in the West. I'm with you if you come to me with a plan that saves this season and gives us a champion for this season. Then I'm happy. It is because I think the Lakers have an excellent chance to win the whole thing and I think they showed that the weekend before it all shut down so just give me a vehicle to get us a champion and then I think we're good. Here's a good question from Aaron the artist what's the better movie inception or the Matrix. Now I love both movies but I think the Matrix is one of the top ten movies ever made in history. I think it is just brilliant stuff. There's a spiritual message in the in the Matrix it. There's also this idea that you can wake up to what's real as opposed to the dream that we're living in. I think the Matrix is one of the great movies ever made. I'm guessing that the Matrix probably isn't one of your favorite movies. No I mean the reason. It's Kinda close to me. Was that was my father-in-law. Lisa's Dad who passed away longtime ago. That was his favorite really. Wow Yeah He. He loved that movie so that. Yeah I'm with you. I think exceptions deep to be. Let's put it this way. If you're watching inception you can't be doing anything else. You can't be on your computer. You can't be doing laundry. Inception is a deep dive. Man You gotta you gotta be ready and jump into that thing and so and that doesn't make it any less of a movie. It's just you got to be focused. It's one of your favorite Matt. He's one of your other favorite movies. The usual suspects you've gotta you gotTa lock into that man. You can't be out to an other stuff. It's if you're GONNA be in on the full on the full movie with usual suspects and see what that whole thing's about. You've got to watch it while you're not doing anything else. And by the way that's a fun one to rewatch. After you even know the truth right I can go back and see where the truth is. It's awesome you're like man was right in front of me right in front of me. Somebody just asks have either one of you. Watch the Lady of Troy and HBO. I've seen it twice. It's the story of Cheryl Miller Pam and Paul Magee. Usc It's Great. It's only an hour documentary running right now in. Hbo and Doris Burks. In that. Jeff amazing question. She says what if Michael Jordan we watched him at North Carolina and we watched them win that national championship for the tar heels and then that was it Michael Jordan done with a public career. That was Cheryl Miller. She was so good and she was probably the best women's basketball ever but it was before there was a professional vehicle it was it was before the WNBA and Cheryl Miller just won two championships at USC and then off into the ether went to work for TNT. And so it's it. But that was the birth of of the the beginning of women's professional basketball that opened the door for people like Lisa Leslie and Cheryl swoops but that team was unbelievable. Matter of fact a lot of people don't know this Pam McGee one of the McGee Twins Pam and Paula. Mcgee is Javale sales mom javale McGee Center for the Lakers is the only player to play in the NBA who's mother played in the WNBA. So that's kind of a cool sidelight competitors. Here's a question. This is actually a good question. What is your herb of choice? During the quarantine. The question is obviously and the answer is a a really really good indika called northern lights. That is my go-to good. Indika named northern lights that Acapulco Gold also also very very mellow is this fall readily available during the Corentin. Oh Yeah in fact You can have it delivered. There are a number of delivery sites. I use EAS E. as e not a paid announcement. But that's my delivery service and there are a bunch of delivery services and potch dispensaries. I shouldn't call them pot shops Dispensaries are also open because a lot of people still use cannabis in a medical way so so that's totally they're completely open and it's readily available in John recommended. It would save marriages of those ones all that you read earlier. Hey how about this one? Mace I'm a doctor from India. I can't listen live since it's six. Am here and I have to go to the hospital early. So I listen to podcasts. Do you think it helps or hurts. Lebrons MVP narrative because the season ended right when he was hitting his best form. What do you think I think it helps? I think it absolutely helps. I think you you always think in terms of lasting memories like the most recent thing is the thing that you remember. The thing I remember is that Lebron was peaking at that moment. He was peeking through those Those two big games against Milwaukee and the clippers. So yeah I think it absolutely helps and I actually think that if they do have an MVP award. Lebron has a better chance than most people are giving them. I I think that when you consider everything. He's done this year as a whole he's right there with you on a mobile say would win comfortably. I'm not saying yeah I wouldn't win but I'm saying I would vote for Lebron and I think a lot of other people would too. Yeah I think there are definitely people that will vote for him. I mean I would vote for Lebron. I just think he's not the favorite to win and I think that's kind of undenied. He's not the betting favourite in in Vegas right now to win the MVP. Oh isn't it nice when we get to talk about? Who's going to win the MVP that conversation? We get to bring back once in a while. all right coming up next. We'll we'll get a break in here. Because Lindsey how do we feel about Larry King? Do we feel like he's still going to make an appearance? Yes and Lindsey. This is why you don't go one hundred percent. I said nine hundred ninety nine. His publicist said she's calling him right now to remind him. Okay let's see shows up good all right so very possibly Larry King and still maybe not Mason and Ireland seven. Espn so do you think twitter has gotten meaner or more helpful during our national shutdown. It's a little less mean. Actually you well. It was so bad before it is so bad it is inherently evil. Twitter is a cesspool of negativity. It's where people go to rip people because they don't feel comfortable doing it in person but I'm actually I follow people who are mostly positive like I get somebody who's just negative all the time. I just stopped following them so for me. It's gotten a little better. How about you? I think it's generally gotten better. There's a lot of good information on twitter right now about what's going on. There's also a lot of bogus information like. That's where that that whole. If you hold your breath for ten seconds it means you don't have corona virus thing came from and that was just a bunch of made up. Bs also made up. Es was if you drink a lot of water or keep your throat moist. You won't get corona virus also not true so there are a lot of mistruths on on twitter but I think for the most part especially if you follow sort of news people if you follow news people you get really good information you know. Follow the Associated Press and follow. Cbs News and foul ABC News and those kinds of people get really good information the La Times is a really good one to follow although you know what bothers me..

"Producing this When doing this podcast like many of you. Listening to this in self quarantine Taping this in Toronto and have been inside now for about a week and So it is Is actually good to do something like this sort of breaks a little bit of the stir craziness my guest this week is Scott van pelt the ESPN sportscenter anchor and longtime ESPN presence In this podcast Scott Ni- discuss what? I think you will find pretty interesting. And that's how his show is adapting to the current corona virus crisis. What working ESPN is right? Is like right now and if you remember. Scott was on the air the night the NBA was cancelled was basically flying lies. No script and just sort of figuring out as things went along in the studio the Agent Orange Now ski stars Birkin. Ruko were doing the Doing an NBA game live essentially the last NBA game of the year. I think between the nuggets of the Mavericks. So it's a really interesting conversation just about how Van Pelt professional world has changed as all our professional roles have changed. But I think you can enjoy. It's always a very thoughtful. Guest talked to him a number of times and so coming up on the sports media podcast. Espn's Scott Van Pelt my next guest who has been my podcast number. Times doesn't really need a big introduction. If you if you listen podcast or if you watch sports you're quite familiar with got them pelt and his work. Espn over the years He hosts his own version of sportscenter and has really become the template. I think for that entire company in terms of what sportscenter maybe should be in the twenty twenty s. What it can be and the reason. I wanted him to come on man. I could have Scott on anytime and he'd be an interesting guests and you know a loved one time. We can go a couple hours on this but this is going to be very specific to what's been going on this week with cove in nineteen and And Scott sort of had to fly line on a situation that never occurred before. And that's doing sportscenter when the NBA season Basically was canceled and they went back and forth with Ryan Ruko. Doris Burke and Scott Van Pelt Wrote about From Ryan Ruko and Doris burks perspective on what that was like for them and I wanted to check in with Scott to sort of see. What what. It's been like the Ho- sportscenter in this essentially Surreal and never before time. So Scott Van Pelt joins me on the sports media. Podcast THAT SCOTT. Thank you very much for pop it on today. I really appreciate that. I'm happy to do a richer I've nothing else to do. Well first off so give me a sense of just and I think not me a sense but give the people who are listening a sense of what is life like for you right now. Are You You you're spending. I imagine a lot of time at home. You're probably not in self quarantine at the moment. You have to go into the office for a couple hours. What is give people a sense of? What it what? What is your work like? At the moment we tape this on Tuesday march seventeenth. Well I mean. It's it's certainly different In terms of what we're covering initially because there's very little left but for the moment we're We're kind of a skeleton crew We're continuing to do Of Sports Center at night and they have been very thoughtful about the number of people that are required to do so the number of people that should be in a room at one point in time any time. There are large gatherings and that will really try to be Very thorough and making sure. Everything's wiped down this and that I think I think it's a challenge for everyone People on our show staff people in our office anywhere where people are still gathering in mass. And by that I mean you know more than if you like to know what we're going to do and to be smart about it so it's it's kind of more of a skeleton crew than it's good and we're essentially taking it day by day Less hour by hour now just because pretty much everything. Shut down I don't know what else to say. We're postponing the for now. I think we're taking it day by day and and wondering what there is to cover with grateful and the short term for free agency the NFL and that they are involved like this is this stuff would be headline stuff regardless right even if the tournament we still on the NBA. Nhl and everything else would still play so we have something in the short term to cover. How well we'll have something because well that's another matter entirely but for now Obviously the kids are in school. Were home at the House without going out and about I'm just going in Doing my job it now. It's different but I mean are are are small little crew is still gathering and doing shows and and until it becomes clear that that's not what we should do. We Will Scott. Can you give me I? I know that you work You know you you principally work at night so this is sort of a guess on my part but probably a logical guests that there would be less people on the ESPN campus in Bristol at night versus sort of the regular nine to five from your perspective at night. How how reduced is the campus? Like when you're driving in like do you see far? Less cars is it. Is it like many people would Who have sort of experienced to are still going to work like essentially like a bit of a ghost town in a very feeling or is or is it similar to what it is normally is for. You know I'd say what it feels like. Richard is is a bit like Of like on a holiday You know you notice that there's not as many people There's one sort of Small Little Parking Lot. It's nearest the The the building where I work and that parking lot isn't big And so it's kind of a challenge to find a spot which sometimes people are always there. They find it interesting that way. You don't have a parking spot. Not and I'm looking for spot things everybody else Those parts are easier to find out because they're already people And that that's that's clear like that. The number of people parking spots is the most obvious well like there aren't as many people here but again I think our company like so many others is being very very. What's the word of the moment abundance of caution people that are able to work from home working so and That that's the most obvious sort of difference is just the availability of parking spaces. Have you found? Management being hyper vigilant in sending out Notes to the staff about If you can practice social distancing if you can And some you can't work from home We're going to keep you updated on everything because obviously were massive major sports company and so much of what we do is now being determined by things out of our control. I always say like you know if. Espn does something stupid. I'm happy to mention it but one thing about your company that I've always said and I really really admire when it comes to the health of their employees when it comes to win employees. Get into trouble if they're abroad and something bad happens to them. It really is a first class and first rate company so my instinct would be dead. Espn is generally speaking. Been pretty good and thinking about The health of their employees. But obviously I'm not there. You are two things you're exactly right. I mean whether it's a snowstorm that well whatever that's a bad example because there was no winter in New England but any time. There's a threat of snowstorm. There are you know have been secured this local hotel so that if anyone that's working at night like you don't have to go home you're right. They're they're they're interested in and what that's just a snowstorm this pandemic. I mean they're obviously You know they're out in front of the most accurate information And the most sort of up-to-date no one's like no one's being forced to do anything It's just sort of what people are comfortable with. I think every every company and and ours is on. That list is doing their best to figure out what's what's necessary Obviously to do show requires a certain level of participation in presence Like yes they're your instincts are accurate that very concerned about The CAST members as we're looking after Scott. I WANNA go back to last Last Wednesday and I'm sure both of us would probably acknowledges last Wednesday seriously feels like nineteen fifteen like it literally feels like fifty years ago but yet it was last Wednesday night where You're I imagine preparing for sportscenter now. Obviously sportscenter that's still going to be incredibly different given what everything that's going on and then all of a sudden in the second quarter. I think if I am wrong on my timeline here I apologize. But in the second quarter of that Mavericks Nuggets Game The The season basically is cancelled and that precedes. What happened with the thunder jazz game when the players are not walking on the court? They're not coming on Kgo. Bear eventually tests positive for the corona virus. You're probably somewhere in Bristol watching all this like Holy Shit and then somebody at your company tells you Scott. You're going live on the air here. You'RE GONNA to toggle between the live game with Ryan Rubio Endorse Burke and let's see what happens so I want to sort of dial down into this because this is like really the kind of stuff that news anchors do in situations of conflict and disaster and stuff. We don't often see this with sports. So if you could take me just Let's start with just that day and going in and what you thought might happen and the moment you start going on the air live with us when we were. We were sitting there doing what we always do. We're we're preparing to do But we're also preparing to do half time because Wednesdays this season we've been doing half times of the early and late games with our show following the lake in so The first quarter in Dallas is going and we were getting ready to talk to watch. Because I was going to share the news at the end was going to be on Thursday to try to figure out what to do moving forward about playing games. If you remember the reporting lease was without fans that was going to be the next step and as we're preparing for that we're watching on televisions this jazz sunder game and it's obvious something's not right and by not right. I mean people are leaving floor and people leaving the floor getting this report from. Why shown did somebody might be sick. What happened with with the in Oklahoma City was obviously like a wait a minute? What's going on and then we're hearing that the game's being delayed because of an illness. Well real quickly you go in Holy Shit. Somebody's got it and not long after its rudy. Go bears got it..

"To Kobe Bryant. A slew of rule changes surprisingly fierce competition and a bit of controversy the All Star game which featured a format change that concluded in fourth quarter. Sprint to one hundred fifty. Seven points looks more like a playoff game than it did. An exhibition match up. Here's Doris burks reaction to the game on. Espn I take. They fixed the All star. Game in my estimation I think other leaks need to look at this throughout the course of the game. It elevated in terms of its competitiveness. We spoke in many times on this show about how underwhelming all star Games can feel. Neil does this change to the rule seem to have fixed it as burke suggested in the take. I mean sort of At the end it certainly felt very competitive. They were I know it was a radical concept. They were actually playing defense at the end of the game And so to that extent it did make the finish of the game interesting hard-fought it's still didn't fix the problem of player effort and defense in the early stages of the game. I mean I I think the first quarter score was fifty three to forty one in a quarter but You know maybe that's what we want out of an all star game. Even before this rule change we had seen especially with the adoption of the player versus player draft format that in the final few minutes. If it's close the the player start to actually try their some pride on the line certainly money for charity on the line And that was true even before this new format and I think that this year's change just made like the whole fourth quarter that way because they didn't know you know there wasn't a set amount of time until the game ended. It was just all about like possession for possession. This game can last as long as you want. And it lasted a long time in the sense that they were not making shots at the same rate anywhere near the same rate in that fourth. Quarter as they were In like the first three quarters I kinda liked it because it felt like especially the first two quarters. The third quarter ended up in a tie that in that quarter but the first two quarters felt like that like you know tons of offense of the previous also games and then we got we also got actual defense team plays so we sort of got the best of both worlds of like. Does anyone actually enjoy the version of the All Star game that we've grown so used to where they're just sort of lackadaisically walking down the cordoned throwing lobster each other with no defense? I mean what is who said even four this point I think the alley oops are fun like twice but you can see just from the reaction from this game this little tweak that everyone's like Oh my God it was the best all star game ever. We were wrong. The gimmicks this is great turns out basketball's more exciting when teams are trying. What a concept defense right. How do we ever not realize this? I mean it seems so obvious to me that we've gone through this a few times and again I'm I'm in favor a of novelty and You know experimenting using these All Star Games as a petri dish but the only one of the All Star Games. That's interesting is baseball. Because it's closest to the actual product. So anything you're going to do to move the NBA. All Star game closer to what we see in well particularly playoff basketball is gonna be better to me. It seems obvious that it was a good move and you know maybe they should go even farther with us. I think I'll start tournament. Nhl Style every every game is a race to twenty four points and it's just all the the fourth quarter it just is the All Star game. Yeah that would be really. We didn't really need the first three quarters right. We just didn't really need it. I mean it set up the one team ahead one team needing to come from behind which I guess you want that narrative. No I don't think so. I think that starting them off at zero zero and then raced a twenty four. Would even make it. You know it's closer. Going in the players would try even harder. Yeah and we want guys getting you know going all out and getting injured meaningless exhibition game. I did enjoy the tweets afterwards. Like okay do the pro bowl next fix the other fixed the other leagues next fixing now. That's probably true so the game was set up with a tribute to Kobe. Bryant as a crucial component the target score for the end of the game was twenty four points. More than the point. Total of the leading team after three quarters. Neil do you think that the Kobe themes of the night played a role in the game? Increased Energy I do. I mean there's no way to really prove it but I do feel like Especially when we saw toward the end when a shot could have been like the game winner we saw some guys trying some crazy shots to just be the iconic you know game winner to get to the to the number almost like it did feel like it was in the spirit of Kobe. Trying to take a shot. Some of them were like ridiculous. Heat checks by Lebron like a foot inside half right. Maybe that was a little bit much And contributed to the bad field goal percentage and we have to talk about the fact that a free throw ended the got the team to the to the twenty four point target. What do you guys think about that? Because there was a lot of controversy around that and people saying especially on the losing team saying field goal should decide which I agree with. I feel like it was a little anti-climactic maybe it was a consequence of the harder Defense being played because there were like actual fouls happening in the fourth. Quarter this game. Two and guys. We're going to the free throw line. But it was a little weird. Anthony Davis makes a free throw. It's over like you gotTa win on a on a shot from the field right. I. I'm just full of country takes today but I kinda disagree. I think like there was drama. If what you need is drama for the last shot you got it with his missed free throw is I miss free throw and then there was drama drama. Can there be around a shot that only has at best like a thirty percent chance of missing or whatever you say that things that have a thirty percent chance okay. We go there Sara. Sorry he didn't have to go there. There's no reason to think that would happen again. I mean I mean it could happen again but it won't necessarily happen again. I mean it was a little bit of just bad luck in terms of making as dramatic as possible. I mean couldn't they also make you win by two? Wouldn't that solve it? I don't think that would have solved it here. They did win by two even with the it was one fifty seven to one fifty five. We're in by three. What about window? That's not normal. Nobody I you know I do feel like it's like tennis. The win by two mentality should be in there even. If it's not exactly two right right. Sure that's what I meant to win by two mentality that replaces the Mamba mentality boy or maybe refs. Just you know no fouls no fouls when a team is on brink of winning. Well I kind of agree with that too. I don't disagree with that because you know if we're talking about playground rules which is the spirit of the draft. You know in the two cats getting to pick sides in playground like you know you're GonNa have to score a bucket from the floor to win. Fouls can happen. You call you know you can call your own fouls but that just means you get to take it out and go again for another possession that there's not like free throws involved but if you want all rules if you want the game to mimic a real game to be close to a real game. Oh we're way past that way but that was fun right that it felt more like a real game. I'm with Sarah. I'm for I'm for the free throws you've come as I said before the closer. You get a real basketball. The better so free throws are fine. I'm sorry it ended that way. I'm sorry it didn't end. On some crazy lob dunk that which is really all they do at the All Star game anyway but it ended on an actual real basketball scenario. That's what's so interesting like free throws are things that don't happen in the All Star game when no fouls are being called and it's and there's no defense being played so this part I felt like that was actually fine. I'm complaining about just just for the sake. Okay all right good to know and it was really interesting to see there. Were very few there were substitution. Sort of at the beginning of the fourth quarter and then the teams just stuck with those lineups for the rest of the game because you did see like trae young and I think Don Chech- they were the starters but then they didn't play In favor of like more defensive-minded minded guys like kyle our Kyle lowry playing. You know crucial minutes at the also charges very on band Jasdaq. Yeah this kind of make sense. Why Kyle lowry was there? You know I mean he's not the guy who's GonNa you know. Wow you with acrobatic plays but taking charges because this new world order this is the new all star game where defense matters. I liked that aspect of it. I'm all for coaches really seemed to buy in and they took obviously trae. Young is statistically showboats. Right exactly TRAE. Young is like one of the worst defensive players in basketball and so they were like. Oh man you know now that this. This is like the player we want for the first three quarters of the. All Star game your first three quarters guy. Yeah but then. Now it's the fourth quarter. This is serious business bringing in Kyle lowry now. It counts now count accounts. It's still doesn't count well so I think that the reason why they didn't make the subs though is because well once they got kinda rolling into it. It was all about the competition In those players I think would not have wanted to to come off under any circumstances but also the fact that you didn't really know when the game would end or how much longer there would be in the game because of the the Weird L. Amending scoring system you know and the fact that the twenty four points that they added on to the leading teams score by normal all-star standards that would have taken like a half a quarter at most So I think maybe they were like look. We don't know how long this is. GonNa take so. Let's just roll with it. And then when they started actually playing defense. They're like well. It's too late now. We can't like make subs and pull some of these guys out on this stage right. Also they were all playing really. Well I mean going into the defense was working. Crates WAS YEAH. I of a suggestion here me out since we can do whatever we want. Now with the All Star game. What if they made the subs? Once you were sub down. You couldn't come back in the game so it's a little bit. I guess I'm just trying to make everything like the baseball all star game but it added a little more tactics on one. You deploy certain players when you take the amount and how you can structure lineups. Think about that. That's interesting although mind-blowing would we know so that would mean like you wouldn't start the game with like Lebron you might actually start with a weaker lineup or you or more balanced lineup or you might wait and see who the other team puts on the court and you know hockey style tried to match up. Certain guys you'd stagger the stars. I like that I try to change every aspect of this because it needs improvement. I hate the NBA. All Star game. I'm not shy about making that point. I can't stand it I find unwatchable so you should be in charge of changing it. Then maybe maybe me I think yeah. I mean if we're borrowing for hockey. They should just make subs in the middle of the play okay. That's one of the many things that I don't understand that at all anyway. The highlight of the all-star weekend is usually the famed dunk contest. This year's competition did not disappoint requiring an additional two rounds of competition before a Derek Jones. Junior of the Miami Heat finally claimed a single point. Victory over Orlando's Aaron Gordon. Despite Gordon's final round dunk over seven foot five Taco fall robbery Marion. We'll get to that. There was a lot of controversy over the judge's decision. Okay so I personally felt that Jones deserved the win. In the first Tiebreaker Round Jones had the dunk from the side where the ball is tossed off the side of the backboard and then went through his legs. And then Gordon did his third dunk of the night over. Chance the rapper. Which was my first problem there. But it was a carbon copy of previous dunk. Jones had done over two dudes instead of just one but I might be outnumbered here I think. What did you guys think of dust? First of all? I think Gordon did that just to show like. Hey you did this dunk. I can do this dunk but I also did my other. Dunks were better than your dunks and I mean Gordon was the better dunker I think consistently throughout the contest. He did more interesting dunks. You probably disagree. And that's not what it's about but I think the scoring system and the way the judge's work are like have poisoned the contest because first of all they because we know who the judges are able to kind of Chit Chat with each other at the scoring table..

"And it's just another hundred dollars. What is out the door cost said one chatter size medium to Canada twelve dollars? Oh what did we sell it for fifteen dollars. We're not doing well we're not using. And then you're getting addresses to Chevy Chase Maryland and you're sitting there going. Is it worth my time to just drive out. Jeff drop it down more on t shirts than you did on the restaurant impossible. Impossible Jackson pollock. Is there any ways that we can reverse reverse that trend and I don't want to make a lot of money but like at least break even know so we. We are more than breaking even because these shirts have already been paid for so it's just a surplus right now now and the majority of the shirts don't cost more than three dollars to ship and we we put in a placeholder of around three dollars to try to make this work. We're in. We're in a good spot right. Komo care I'm mostly serious when I say this. Do you feel that this is an achievement in your life that this is embarrassing. Say I feel oddly accomplished. I had I had my wife call you with evening because I just wanted to hear from you that you were proud of me. I am proud of you. You I mean commute you went into the unknown. Had some setbacks. Pick yourself up dust yourself off an American. I'm worse than when I got off. They sent me to a different C.. Four Ida Bright Street. Yeah what they do in office depot. They just sent me to three different aisles. Of Of course lose like did you call them before you made the drive to make sure they had it in stock. No it says online they have it. I'm not wasting my time. I'm go go go Gaithersburg. There are none in eighteen added. Look it's Gaithersburg exit exit off to seventy I go. I've been coerced into haven't been you know what they always say. In that regard. Listen solicit tone. I I had the answer. Listen to Tori. Gee I'm not going to be nice is this is our last show this week so I'm not going to go on and on and on about this but But there is. There is a circumstance that will happen on December tenth. I'm Melissa Moulay I'm misreading molay who who by extension because we watch channel four here all the time is in our extended podcast family I have never actually met Melissa assimilation. But we've had a lot of e mail. Contact met her husband and and stuff like that and and her Dear friend her dear friend from high school lost lost. Her brother and her brother was the father of three young children. And so there is going to be on December tenth in September seven number seven seven. I'm sorry December seventh in a bar in Layton's Ville. I don't know if I need a passport to Germany and there's going to be an opportunity community for people to spend some money and the proceeds will go directly to this family. It's a very very nice thing to do. I showed the originally mail too gene Tori and they said I should do this. CR- I told Chris Peters out but yeah you should go. I told Chris the story and he said throw some money. I again I. It is a sad story. I'm not like well I mean in this case. I'm not a heartless mania who go take what you have is money handedly. Yes and what you don't have as much of his time. Yes or willpower will to do that. Uh Right right so but I've told Melissa that I will try my best to be there at five o'clock when the event starts events going to go all night I'm not going to be there all night. A good deal last thing on earth earth I want to do honestly is go to a sports bar in Layton's Ville after eight o'clock at night during the holidays. Yeah so that I can have a whole a bunch of people screaming at me about the redskins or something like no. I don't WanNa do that but I will. I will go there and I will wander around. I won't you know I'll be aghast. Yes bartender in the sense that I'll wander around and say hello to people and if that can help to any sort of a crowded I'll try my best to get. If you leave at noon. You should be there right around five. It'll be perfect use as long as successful bartender. Just fill every less right up to that. Yeah I just I'm bad at. I couldn't do it. A chatter spilled the beer. Let me share the make a make a suggestion tonight. I'll drive you thanks. Let's just invite ourselves over Gary South because he can't live more than ten fifteen minutes. Yeah okay I haven't been to the new house no live there for ten years. Yeah so that would be grail Krill. Something that would be great. Oh you know what that's okay yeah. jeans old house does she lived in for how many years at twelve I was never invited to that either face never once. I was never invited to the house before that. You're never too that. How never it was too so far for you would never have common and easy? Excuse you'll never come so. Let's not invite Him Tony. I don't buy them because you know that's I've never been anybody tone. You're welcome that Samantha. Eliza Manson everyone. I know you'll never come so I just I won't This is the one thing I wanted to do in the in the opening of the show very quickly and this is something we've talked about on yesterday Mike and Myself. ESPN pays four hundred million dollars a year to broadcast the NBA Turner. I'm sure pay a similar amount to broadcast the NBA. Four hundred million dollars for that. You get a bunch of nationally televised games once or twice a week you get a game. One of the Games they got was was played yesterday in the late night. This was Milwaukee against the clippers in Los Angeles. This could very well be the finals of the NBA. I don't think a lot of early season games mean anything but this one. You might have wanted to see if you could stay up. The only problem with it was Leonard. Wasn't gonNA play for the second. Take time in eight games so far this year after the summer off Kawhi Leonard was on leave basically management baby. Now what's the team says. Is He's got a knee problem so we need to rest them on a regular basis. What the term of art that is being bandied about by metrics people Who will bond hates all the analytics people is load management a phrase that nobody had ever heard till about two years ago? Two years ago. I'm going to be very candidness. This is I. Lay this all at the feet of Gregg Popovich and Adam Silver Gregg Popovich started resting his people before the term unload management came into into flour. He just said I'm arresting. People still did a few paid money to see the Spurs on the road. She wanted wanted to see Tim. Duncan Manu Ginobili. Tony Parker Kawai Leonard. Too Bad sometimes. They didn't even go to the Games. Nobody opening because Gregg Popovich the sainted. Gregg Popovich nobody said this is terrible. What people said is always great to have a bottle of wine with? He's so smart you know. Yeah he's bad when he talks Fox the people on television. But he's such a smart guy. I didn't say wasn't a smart guy. I said he invented sitting his players out. And Adam silver who who was given over the League to players players can do whatever they want. Adam silver never said anything about this now. There's there's procedures in place but if you say I'm I'm resting them because wink wink nod nod has foot hurts. You get away with this. I'm GONNA take the position of somebody at ESPN who runs the company who paid four hundred million dollars to the NBA. Because you thought that in a league where people don't wear helmets commits that the stars will what brought you to the television set and you had an opportunity to see. There's no bigger so right now. Other than Lebron James. There's there's no bigger star than Kawhi Leonard. He was the most expensive most celebrated free just won the title in Toronto which nobody thought was possible. Everybody wants to seek Hawaiian Leonard on a team that a lot of people think could win the championships against the current. MVP honest onto the Combo. Who by the way finished with thirty eight and fifteen I love you ain't fifteen if I run? Espn and you tell me why limbs not gonNA play. I'm upset I'm upset and I'm probably probably thinking. Is there something I can do this. Can I talk to Adam so go right to Adam silver. Oh you're gonNA mess around with people below Adam silver. You can go right to Adam silver this my position. I I think this is sorta Doris burks position as well who said that this is bad for the NBA. That this is that some point this is going to nip the heels of the and it's bad because that's that's what you want. That's who you want to see how might takes a different position. Mike's position to be fair is no this is an injury. This is absolutely an injury and so even though even though oh I agree with you Tony on the larger tableau here in in In the micro. It's okay to rescue island. So that's where Vance notice notice would. ESPN had got some so could they have flipped to another game. I don't know how they ability to flex like does is but I don't know how that works but you know what. ESPN has to eat it. And then tonight we'll play and maybe that'll be on Turner and by the way the reverse could chew. tertre might have to eat it. You know but if you're if we are partners if we are partners and you're withholding like as it is I can't see Klay Thompson and I can't see Kevin Durant all year. Some people might say. I can't see John Wall John Wall system. I can't see Steph curry injury that was during the season. But there's a lot of guys who we know and want to see who we can see. And now you're GONNA hold out a great star now. I mean that that is. That's my opinion op Stephen. A Smith has a different one. His opinion is like we'll bonds that well it's injury it's injury but what I think this is is the NBA saying we really care about Christmas miss. I guarantee you on those Christmas Games. They're sitting out. We care about Christmas and we care about the playoffs and he's other things we don't care about as much I'm not gonna say we don't care at all but we don't care are about as much so so that's essentially what I said on television yesterday and accuse Wilbur defending the shield because he always says that to me about football. You know I mean named I think I think this is a real issue in that league because they are star driven much more so than baseball and football football. Oh your quarterback driven. Maybe but you don't even know you can't you don't know what they look like..

"I'm a little flustered right now. I have no makeup on a little sick. And I just love her so much and have dreamed about what this moment is going to be like, and I don't want to be today. I'm just not ready today. I'm not the best me and I don't want the worst me to meet doors Burke. And he was like, yes, probably just gonna be and make makeup when you go down and make up. And I was like, what he's like. Yeah. I think it's probably a about a ninety five percent chance running. And I was like I thought you were going to be like, no, Katie does. She goes to a different area of the stadium. So we're walking down the hallway and he's telling me what the so I will start on this segment, then we'll go to a look. She's right in front of us, and I was like. And I just ran the other I turned around and stopped and said, tell me more about the book and like didn't. And he's like, we can walk and talk and I said, tell me more problems to the pre block. Like I didn't wanna get closer. I actually was avoiding or like a person, I don't like which is the opposite of. I'm obsessed with her. So we she I look I turned back around she's gone. So Mike, we're safe a walk into makeup. She walks into make. Oh my gosh. And she wasn't in the makeup area. Someone else's getting their makeup done to make a woman told me to go. Why don't you go get changed? And I was like, 'cause this is what I was going to wear. But you're right. It's a good way to let me. Come back, and then I'll be ready for you. So I go get changed that come back endorses in the chair now. So I'm like, well, now Katy well now Katy, she's going to leave makeup and you're gonna need to go into make up. And if you avoid or it's gonna look like I have this tendency to when I get nervous and don't want people to see me, it tends to sometimes come off. Like, I'm like, I don't wanna say hi to you. You know what I mean? Like, if somebody thinks I think I'm super famous, then it would be like, I didn't say, hi Doris, Burke. When really it's like I don't wanna ruin Doris Burks day by being like fled. I love you. So I was like you're gonna have to say hydra, or now it will be rude. And so when she came out of makeup, I was like Doris. And I like fumbled with whatever I was holding. I'm thinking I was holding ninety things for no reason in my hands and it was like it's so nice to meet you. I'm Katie Nolan. I work at and she was like, Katie. It's. So nice to finally meet you. She said, God, I'm gonna cry. She said they, they asked me to do your show. And, and of course, I did the thing where I just cut her off to make it awkward. But I would choose referring to was the NBA final that we did, which go look it up was very funny, and I loved it, and that we did it came up great, but we asked all this talent to participate in this thing, and we'd ask doors Burke. So when she was like they asked me to do your show, and I was like, oh, doors don't worry. We knew you wouldn't say, yes, you're so busy. And she goes, oh, no. I wasn't busy at all. I was completely free. I just didn't want to say something and embarrass myself. And I was like, I that is I was floored by her, because she looked me dead. In my eyes, it was like, no, I was free coulda done it. That I didn't do it because I don't trust me to not say something real stupid and get myself in trouble. And I was like, what are you couldn't do? You know you can do. No wrong to the entirety of the world. Right. Like, you know, you will all die for you. Correct. If something dumb, everyone would be like, oh, she's so charming, she so easily could have been like, yeah..

"Shell Pennzoil performance line and the Eastern Conference did what it's been doing all year last night there yesterday guys giving us really entertaining basketball. And I know that there's such compensation in the NBA about the dominance of the west and the dominance of Golden State. But it was a solid reminder yesterday that what Milwaukee is doing and the way the seventy Sixers a Bill the playoffs in the east are going to be spectacular is going to be in both conferences, quite honestly. I mean, I I really do. I'm looking forward to get seven games like the Sixers, and Milwaukee who's not gonna love that. That was awesome game. Well, we're going to head to the shell Pennzoil performance line where ESPN NBA analysts Doris Burks joins a Doris Burke joins us actually can't talk this morning here in San Antonio for warriors Spurs tonight doors, thanks for joining us this morning. What was your big takeaway? From Milwaukee and Philly yesterday. Well, just how fun the two stars were to watch obviously Joel and eat went for forty points and sixteen rebounds. I think most importantly he had eighteen in the fourth quarter. Jimmy Butler was there closer he gets, you know, fourteen in the final six minutes. I thought you saw the Sixers at their best. And then the scary part to me for NBA players moving forward is what you're honest. Did. He gets fifty two, but he he makes three threes. He does it any fishing fashion. The guy is getting bigger stronger, faster better. It feels like on every on every possession. Just listen to me the stars make the NBA just absolutely incredible to watch. And they were they were just off the chain. Both of them the Monday morning roundup. Brought to you by autozone. Get in the zone. Autozone is Doris Burke joins us on the shell Pennzoil performance line. And we get down towards the end of the season right now, the bucks still the best record in basketball. Let alone the Eastern Conference at this point. But you see the win for the seventy Sixers know what the raptors are capable of as we get down to it overall. Which team do you think is playing the best basketball at this point in the season in the Eastern Conference? You know, it's hard to dispute the the level of consistency. Milwaukee has played with. I do think no Malcolm Brogdon, we have to keep an eye on that moving forward. You know, most NBA fans to casual ones would think this is not a big deal, and I certainly don't think for the regular season and through a first round playoff series Malcolm's absence would be huge. But we are talking about a guy who was fifty forty ninety the absolute gold standard in terms of efficiency. He's a low mistake player mirror. Tichy started in his place yesterday. You know, did not play. Well, he's certainly capable of better. But I think for Milwaukee with their lack of experience as good as they have been all year you want all of their pieces. So I'm curious to see sort of how that injury plays. And I still would keep an eye on Boston and Philly and Toronto probably plays has the ability to shape shift more than anybody in terms of the way, they can play they can play big they can play small fast. They can play host Toronto can go in a lot of different directions. Doors over in the west, we see Oklahoma City sitting in the five slot right now, but it's pretty close between three through seven and eight net area there, but with Russell Westbrook. Getting sixteenth tech. Nicole has to sit a game. There's that fine line of aggressive to overaggressive to help your team to hurt your team. Where is he? You know, Paul George took a fine Mike last week because of what they feel is a lack of respect when he and Russell Westbrook. Go to the basket. So I was out there last game. I thought that they could have had more opportunities at the free throw line. But you know, what my I just this this really hurts. And I think Russell's at the point in his career where you've gotta start to address the the the reps in a different fashion to me, the Spurs have now one eight straight. They are one back of you in a loss column, you have an incredibly difficult schedule remaining for the Oklahoma City thunder and you put your teammates at a deficit and this guy prides himself on being a great teammate. And anyone who's played with them? We'll tell you exactly that in the locker room the confidence he tries to give you but to me this one really hurts. I just don't like that. He put his teammates at a deficit here because the racist too tight your game behind Portland in the in the loss column, you still have an opportunity to move up in the seedings this one just really tough to take if you're Oklahoma City. Taurus, would that be? Being said, I mean aggressiveness is part of the style for Russell Westbrook in general. How does the player that's been doing this way for so long? Find a new line in the way, he communicates without losing that edge. Well, I think it's disappointed almost you almost have to go from an organizational standpoint. Because again, Paul George was. And we're talking about a guy who is squarely in the MVP race willing to go off on the officials post game because he feels like they're not getting the requisite calls. So your approaches aren't working listen. I don't know what the answer is. I just know that Russell Westbrook. Being absent for your next game is a problem, especially with this title. These these games are, but I do think maybe organizationally, and I'm sure I'm sure Sam that's already discussed it Billy's discussed it. I am. But I'm gonna say this. I was at the game against Golden State. And I thought there were opportunities for both men to be at the free throw line. In fact, I can remember one because I'm sitting on the sideline listening to Jeff and Mark and both of them on multiple occasions on Russell's dry feeling like, oh, he got out. So for what that's worth Doris Burke are ESPN NBA analysts with us on the shell Pennzoil performance line of getting. Calling these Spurs warriors game tonight at eight PM eastern on ESPN. We talked about the Malcolm Brogdon injury and the importance that may not be known by the general public for that injury. The trailblazers almost got into that territory. CJ McCollum only gonna be out for a week. But he's a guy I think more people might be well acquainted with. But how important is that to monitor down the stretch for this team is huge? Because over the last three years they have been top three in terms of percentage points generated for their team when I had them a few weeks ago. The combination of Damian and CJ were accounting for forty six percent of the offense generated by the Portland trailblazers. They are a guard driven team. Obviously Damian is a star in the all-star and the guy who is clutch shotmaker, but he is one a C J McCollum. So this is a big big deal. Now, you know, perhaps you just a little bit while you're waiting for CJ to get right? You can play a little bit more. More through use of Nurkic. But that's a hard turn to me when you've been so guard dominant. Some these guys have been together what lasts three or four years where they have been absolutely dominant. A big deal. No question. Doris as far as the Lakers. They lose to the Knicks who have fourteen wins. The Lakers have thirty one wins. Lebron sits away from the team CLYDE Frazier had some issues with that is he's announcing the game for the Knicks forgetting this year, which we know is overdue think what's going on. Now at the Lakers is going to have a lasting effect in the next year. Well, listen, I think what you saw from LeBron. And I watched and listened to CLYDE Frazier sort of call Brownell for separating himself on the bench, I've been covering LeBron James over a decade now, and what you know on equivocally is when when there's a level of frustration from him. It comes out in these very overt sort of physical displays like his body language can be bad. You see obvious frustration from him. Listen, I think the damage was done when the trade request of Anthony Davis from the New Orleans pelicans. And then all the rumors you saw an obvious effect. I I won't go so far as to say those players laid down. That's not what happened, but I will say they those young guys from L A were clearly affected and whether it lingers into the off season depends on what the roster construction is next year. But they'll have had some time. If some of those young guys stay they'll have had some time to absorb trip the business this, but we're talking about eighteen to twenty two year olds and they're still affected by this. So I listen I can't project out. I just know who LeBron to spend what we saw and have seen is nothing. He hasn't displayed throughout the course of his career. You guys can follow on Twitter at. Hey DB. And don't forget to check out tonight. ESPN eight PM eastern doors is calling spurs-warriors doors as always we appreciate you joining us. Thanks so much. Thank guys. Thanks doors coming up, they're the biggest favorites in five years..

"Teams fighting each other and one coach bringing everyone together next Spain Spain and Fitz on ESPN radio. Spain and Fitz. What's there? Don't always get along. Maybe we usually get along. We don't always get along. But I'm glad to know that we're better teammates than the blues. Are that's all I'm saying it doesn't take much the Saint Louis blues. And I don't know if everybody's seeing this video at this point. But the blues did something we don't see very often in hockey, particularly they went at it and practice, and when I say they went at it. I can't stress enough like they brawled in practically they give you the sort of practice fight that would make an entire arena. Go nuts. It was a full on full-fledged battle of a fight. I mean fisticuffs that I haven't seen in a long time in a fight for the blues during practice. Yeah. And it, and you could tell it had the same passion and stupidity of a game fight because there was a lot of barehanded punching of helmets. If you're in practice, and you want to and you wanna fight your teammate. And there's any Monica restraint that still within you. You're gonna stop punching him in the helmet with your bare hand, but if you've lost it entirely, which it's very clear these gentlemen did. You're just gonna keep wailing on that helmet. Even as you feel your hands starting to swell and Zach Sanford, and Robert bore two'social clearly not big fans of each other right now. Well, and you know, I think it's a little bit of the frustration from a terrible season for St Louis. Oh, yeah. Oiling over and you reach a point where they always say the training camp. You just wanna hit somebody else in the NFL? And I think there's a point me in the NHL where you just wanna hit everybody when you've lost eight of eleven you're sick of hitting other teams. You wanna hit each other? And I can't blame the emotion. I love the fact that they care so much about where it's going, but that's probably the wrong way to work it out. Right. Like, you're the you're not gonna make your team better through all of it. We I mean, we can argue about what leadership is but. We certainly know it's not knocking the snot out of one of your teammates during a practice. Right. And we do a lot of trying to use revisionist history on stuff like this. Or at least try to put a spin on it. Maybe it will give them the spark. They're looking for right. And that sometimes happens in a game when a guy engages with an opposing player, I don't know if we have much precedent for dudes fighting each other in practice, and then finding a coup by balance that propels them to victory. Well, the pools are also trying to find Coon by balancing. And I'm not sure where this comes from. I thought it was a, you know, this is the modern MBA that we live in with all the petty after the king's just whooped up on them. I love the quote, apparently as they were walking off the court one of the king's players was heard saying. Uh-huh. Another two and a half practice for them tomorrow. Half hour practice. Yeah. Yeah. Looking up at the score. I mean, this is this is where we are. And that's after a one hundred eighty nine law. So things are gotten better. I mean one away and eighty nine that's better. Right. No. No, no. That's that's doesn't doesn't help. At all. I'm more in just intrigued by the Jim Boylan quotes their new head coach not interim potentially already installed for next year. Although I think they're still chances that goes so far south that it doesn't happen Doris Burks that is much about question. Whether he'll be around next year after the start to his tenure..
