Is the head coach of the undefeated UCLA bruins number 9th ranked team in the country. Here he is, chip Kelly on the rich eisen show. How are you doing coach? I'm doing great, rich. Excited about the game this weekend. I bet you are. I mean, what goes through your mind, going back to Oregon with a top ten team that's not Oregon. What do you think? Yeah, I think a lot is probably made out of going back there. But this is our third time back there in 5 years. So kind of been there done that. But really gets your attention is how good a team organ is, David, they lost in the opening game of Georgia, but they really rebounded since then. And so when you get a chance to have number 9 point number ten, it should be the game of the weekend. Well, that's why I prefaced my comment by saying about going back there with a 9th ranked team. Now that's new for you there, right? I mean, for you to go back with a team like this one. Yeah, we've been building this for a while here. Because of COVID, we've got a lot of continuity and a lot of kids have been here. There's a lot of players that were there 5 years ago that are still with us now. So we hope our experience is beneficial to us and head back up there. Let's talk about your team and then obviously we know it's a quarterback driven sport. This kid Dorian Thompson Robinson is getting a lot of talk for Heisman and I'm wondering what you see in this young man that has blossomed in his 5th year here with you. Yeah. First and foremost is just his toughness and I don't think people really equate toughness with quarterback play, but the best quarterbacks that have ever played the game are the toughest guys for someone to stand in there. And throw the ball knowing that a 300 pound guy is looking hit him. And not flinch is there's not a lot of people that can do it in the best quarterbacks at every level. I would say you really admire their toughness. And that's what stands out with Dorian. He's just a tough kid. Both mentally and physically. And so his ability to face adversity, whether it be physical diversity or mental adversity and come out better from it is just such an edible quality and you love coaching them. He's a student of the game. He wants to get better every day. He wants to be coached hard. He just so often to work with him when he decided to come back for his 5th year. We were all excited here. So how has he gotten better? Can you give me an example over the first 6 games? I think just the nuances of the games. You know, and I think really understanding because he is such a dynamic player. That he doesn't have to make it happen all the time. He can let it happen. And then sometimes telling the check down is better than scrambling around these scrambled around in the maybe you don't like and hold to now we're behind the stakes. He's really kept us on schedule. He's really being smart on first and second down with everything that he does to put us in advantageous in third down situations.

"Sportsbook. Max, we've been talking about NFL the last two weeks. How about if we dive into some college football today? Yeah, there's some great match ups to upcoming weekends. So excited to talk about them with you, Bobby. All right, so a few of the matchups that I'm most interested in, let's start with TCU and Kansas. TCU is favored on the road. The number I've seen is somewhere around 6 and a half or 7. Where is it sitting with Caesars and where's the action going? Yeah, so we opened this TCU as a 5 point road favorite and you're right. It's been bouncing between 7 and 6 and a half. The past couple of days right now it's at 6 and a half. This game is really interesting. I mean, Kansas is one of the best stories of the college football season. There are 5. They're also 5 against the spread and TCUs also undefeated against the spread. So someone's not going to cover the number this weekend. And throughout the season with our respected betters, they've been fading Kansas over the past few weeks. I guess like trying to find a sell high opportunity with this jayhawks team, it hasn't really worked so far. But they're back to fading Kansas as TCU, they're getting about 62% of the tickets and 76% of the handle. A lot of respect for this horned frogs team, they just completely demolished Oklahoma. Their first year head coach, Sonny dykes. He has his offense absolutely rolling. And yeah, no, this is going to be a good test for both teams. Okay, so you mentioned two things in there that are very interesting. And I got to ask you about them. First of all, TCU coming off that big win against Oklahoma. Do you find in a situation like this that betters kind of overreact to a situation like that? Now they've all kind of discovered the TCU is kind of a team whereas on the other side, Kansas, when you think of Kansas, you don't think of college football. You think of college basketball, is it hard for betters to get it through their minds that Kansas could be good in football? Yeah, so I'll start with TCU. So we had a lot of sharper action on TCU against Oklahoma, but when there's a type of performance like that, it's really what sways the public favor. Now that people that there were so many eyeballs on that game and saw TCU piling up all these yards and points against Oklahoma. And so that really captures the public better's attention. And so yeah and so I would say that GCU is definitely become more of a public team just based off of that huge performance against a formerly ranked team. Now Oklahoma is outside the top 25. Regarding Kansas, I think it's more of a shell shock. We haven't seen Kansas look this good in over a decade. So yes, like they just won the national championship in basketball and they're typically a basketball school. But there are basketball schools that have been good at football for a while. I mean, the big one, I can think of is Kentucky in recent years. They've been a top 25 football team. It's just that Kansas, they've been winning like one game or two games over the past few seasons. So seeing them go from the basement one win away from being bowl eligible already can definitely be jarring for betters. Another noon start on tomorrow is Tennessee and Ellis you. It's hard to believe that it's only been a few years since LSU won the national championship. Now they're a home dog to Tennessee. Yeah, and Tennessee volunteers have looked really, really good to start the season. They're not in that same tier as Alabama and Georgia. And the SEC. But I would argue that they're easily in the second tier. And they host Alabama next week. So, you know, you never know if they're going to be looking ahead toward that monumental matchup ahead of this game. But yeah, volunteers, they opened as a four point road favorite in Baton Rouge. Now the line is Tennessee minus two and a half. And on the surface, it's only a one and a half point shift, but any time a shift happens around a key number, such as three in this game, that should tell you that there is strong money coming in on the side where the line is moving. So we have gotten really sharp money on LSU. And Tennessee, they've gotten 71% of the tickets, but only about 54% of the handle. So the public is betting Tennessee, pretty strongly, but that sharp action is what's made the money seem more 50 50. I got to ask you about a selfish game if you don't mind. And I am a lifelong UCLA fan and unlike most fans who think their teams are better than they usually are. I am a glass half empty guy when it comes to UCLA football. I always think the end is coming. It's just a matter of when, but they're playing great thus far to start off the season, despite that, they're an underdog at home to conference rival Utah. Yeah, and Bobby, I have to say, I'm a USC grad. Well, you see, you should understand those of us who are at UCLA fans. We know we're usually good in basketball. We know that football were fraudulent. It just doesn't happen for us. You know, every now and then we might beat USC at the end of the season, but somewhere along the line we're going to lose to San Diego state or somebody that we shouldn't lose to. And that's what happens. Is this UCLA team for real. It certainly looks like with the spread, the betters aren't sure yet. Yeah, so with you certainly, I mean, they had a nice test against Washington when they hosted the huskies last week and you feel like just completely dominated the huskies. I really like their backfield the Dorian Thompson Robinson, who used to be a turnover machine, but it's definitely calmed down a bit. This season and then Zach sharp and a running back. I mean, they have a very explosive offense and they have really nice trench play. The problem is, they have a staple under Kyle whittingham. Defensive line, it's so physical. And their quarterback came rising very well. If it's not USC's Caleb Williams, I mean, cam rising could very well be the second best quarterback in the conference. And even yeah, so Utah obviously they lost to start the season against Florida, but they looked really, really good ever since. And so we had Utah originally as a three point favorite. This got up to four and a half. Now it's down to three and a half. And Utah, they've been another popular public play.

Charles arbuckle was nice enough to give us some time. UCLA, of course, in colts tight end. So Charles, it's good to talk to you and we were just joking off the air. We're going to talk actual football. We don't have to talk about the nonsense in terms of UCLA and USC leave them for the Big Ten and revenue shares and all that kind of stuff. We want to talk about what's going on in the field. And so let's start with UCLA because I find them a pretty interesting team. If you look at it from a returning production standpoint, there's not a lot back, but you get the most important piece, Dorian Thompson Robinson, Vegas kid, by the way, who's going to be back under center in a really manageable schedule for them as well. What do you make of your bruins as we head into the year? They got a win total of 8 and a half and I think there's some workable pieces there that they get to that 8 9 win mark. Yeah, I'll tell you, you know, you can talk about DTR because I think he's going to really have another next level step. I agree with you. Losing to Phillips doesn't help, but I think they have some other weapons. They've got to transfer from duke that came in at the receiver position. Tax sovereignty is going to be he's going to do what he does. If he can get 1300, 1200 yards, tough, hard yards. I think that really helps him. This brown because I think that was a good one, two quads combination. But I really think all of those things said on the office side, I'm really paying attention to the defense. You know, we got one of my former teammates Ken Norton junior on that staff and mcgovern, the defensive coordinator has a lot of guys that have been D.C.'s as well. When you watch those team last year, it was live and die by blitz. Even the game that I came to, I was out there for the LSU game, played well, but they just defensively, there were sometimes you watch UCLA last year during the season, but they were just exposed. And I think now they're going to play better coverage. They'll have some wrinkles to those coverages. And I think they'll play better. And that's the part I'm looking for. The defense can play well. They should be four and zero, I think, going into the Washington game, which is at home. They have a lot of home games as well. And so if they can get some things going, and Washington will be 5 and O, when they face Utah, that's probably the best they said and quite a while. And I think that's what this thumb expectation, but they'll have a they don't need the trip up early in the year and struggle against the team early in the season, especially the team that they have on the schedule. But I do think they should be for buying for a real nice slot going in the playing Utah. Yeah, 5 of the first 6 games for UCLA at home as Charles mentioned and an intriguing stretch where you get Washington, Utah, both back to back home games, and then you go on the road to Oregon, and then you get to a little bit more of the manageable schedule. We have the Arizona school Stanford. So we'll see if UCLA could take advantage. What have you made of chip Kelly's job up to this point because every year, at least from a betting standpoint, it seems that there is a lot of hype on UCLA coming into a season. Hey, look out, good returning production a couple of years back. Hey, look out, real improvement here. And it feels like every single year, you leave like wanting a little bit more out of the bruins. What have you made of chip Kelly's job up to this point? Exactly what you said. I want to see more. I think winning 8 games last year was good. That's a start. They need to be better than that. They need to be a non gen went kind of team. And they have the weapons and the people to do that. And the schedule sets up for them like that. So I really do think I have to take that next step. This is the year to do it when you have a quarterback that's how awesome experience you've got some other super seniors and they've got some transfers in that should help. Minimize some of the guys that they lost. All right, let's talk about their rival then. USC, they win in the transfer portal. They bring in the big name in Lincoln Riley. It seems on offense. They got everything that you would need, right? A good quarterback and a potential Heisman contender and Caleb Williams, good wide receiver, Jordan Addison, a lot of pieces in the backfield, but I got questions Charles about the offensive line and a defense that is being taped together with a lot of transfers itself. Are the Trojans the best team in the PAC 12 in your mind? They have the potential to be really good. I think Utah is the best team in the pack 12. I mean, I got to give it to Utah because of the things that they can do. I think UFC looks the best on paper. And I agree with you, you know, when you have a USC team that is afraid to run the football, that worried me. And I'm a Bruin. Even for the children's, I expect you to come and punch me in the mouth, and when you're not doing it. You said it best. Their offensive line is not what you expect kind of the USC offensive lines, whether you look at Anthony munoz, said you got me, you can just name names, don't even sell it. You can just throw off football Hall of Famers, but guys, it also plays well at the next level. And I think that's the one thing that Lincoln Raleigh is going to do. It's an air raid system, but they want to run the and I think that's what Caleb Williams coming in Jordan Addison is going to give him 90 plus catches just walking off the street. But can they run the football effectively? And then the other thing is what's been the other side of the ball. USC has always had great defensive linemen. They haven't been very good on the defensive front user. And I think those are the two areas if I look at UFC early on. I want to see if they can do that right away, even with Lincoln Riley because just because he transfers and you still have a lot of guys that are holdovers from that last regime. Are they going to be man enough to physically push people around like do you expect USC to do? They play rice early should when that was probably going to be better than they are is another physical team and it gives you a test early in the year if your USC to see if you're back. To really have a chance to make a run because Fresno state is not going to be easy. Or in a state is a lot better. Yeah, their first four games are tough besides the rice game. And people say Oregon state. Well, yeah, organ state is much improved late in the year. I'm interested to see those two role games, how USC is faring and how Caleb Williams and all those transfers are going to mess early on. You know, the September 17th spot against Fresno state Charles I keep saying better look out because Fresno state last year. They went to Oregon and they were tight the entire time with the ducks, they upended UCLA who was then there were 13 after they beat LSU. It's a battle tested squad with a good quarterback. And if you're talking about struggling on defense, that's the type of team sandwiched between two conference road games that could bite you. Man, those dudes, I still hate Fresno state. Every time I see any of those guys, we play them my sophomore year, I think. My shoulders still hurt. We beat them 17 to nothing, but Jim Sweeney and then pat hill. It doesn't matter who's coaching there. They all have that same mentality. And I saw pat hill if you few years ago, calling the game and he was doing radio for Fresno state and I said, but how do you guys get these, he said, but they come here and I don't care what star they are. We toughen those guys up and he said, what toughest leather? Yeah, y'all sure, 'cause everybody plays dog come out all the other side. What should they have? And they also have now Terry toomey, one of my former teammates. So I just love what they do there, Fresno state. And I'm interested to see what the conference realignments will they get a spot somewhere, maybe not, but I'll tell you what. You've got to be ready to plan when you play them a few USC

"We know we've been big believers in Justin Wilcox. But if UCLA is able to knock off USC and put together a pretty impressive season, it will be fascinating to see what they run back. Thanksgiving week for that game against the golden bears. So if there are questions about UCLA at a lot of spots and namely not the quarterback position with Dorian Thompson Robinson, defensively, this team needs a little bit of an overhaul. So Bill mcgovern steps in a friendly face with an NFL background as defensive coordinator. And a change that I think will be a welcome breath of fresh air for a group that got gash. When it came to rushing touchdowns last season and was a group that was second to last against the past within the league. There aren't a lot of starters, but there is a good amount of experience with all sorts of transfers being expected to play potential big time roles for what UCLA will bring to the table. When you begin to assess where the bruins are as far as a stop unit, do you have reason for optimism that they can rectify the wrongs of things that want to ride last season. I'm not really sure. You bring in a new D.C. and Bill mcgovern, his specialty is defensive backs and linebackers. He was on chip Kelly's eagle staff from 2013 to 2015. I'm just not sure how much different things are going to look since as arano was also on the same eagle staff with chip and mcgovern. So philosophy is probably pretty similar. Prior to mcgovern getting the D.C. job at UCLA, his last D.C. job was all the way back from 2009 to 2012 at Boston college. He inherited a defense that finished fourth the year before he hopped over there. And by his final season in 2012, BC was 63rd and schedule adjusted defensive efficiency. Candidly, I don't know enough about him other than mcgovern likes to send heat and blitz, but you know, I don't know. I don't really get the vibe that this is a massive upgrade. And I don't really get the vibe that UCLA is like spending a ton on football right now. That's just kind of what I'm hearing. What I do know is UCLA is outside the top 100 in returning defensive production. Jim Leonard, an elite defensive mind nabbed Jay Shaw, one of the best cover corners in the PAC 12. That's how Jim lenard is, right? He can steal a kid from Corona, California and convince him Wisconsin's fun. Shaw is really elite. You look at him, gave up a 47% reception rate when targeted and had three picks. Mitchell laguna, a really promising defensive end, got plucked by Mario and Miami. UCLA did hit the portal hard to try to offset some of those losses inked four key cogs with the Murphy brothers from north Texas, as easy Hearn from Wyoming and Darius mua su from Hawaii, each are coming from non power 5 conferences. But they did finish top ten in value over replacement at their respective positions. Will it translate to a power 5 conference with this many good offenses? That's the big question. The answer likely determines whether USC UCLA can actually fight to win the south or just kind of play third wheel. But past the transfers, there's not many dudes on this side of the ball. It just to me doesn't feel like a ton of improvement is going to happen when I look at the system and I look at the talent UCLA doesn't really recruit defense at a level that can be all that competitive in a competent offensive conference. But what you're hoping for is maybe a different voice helps some of the situational defense. Talent rules. But you can be functional if you're studied in your gap sound and you pay attention to detail. But the bruins defense was kind of like sacked with poor starting field position last season. They were outside the top one 20 in getting off the field on third and fourth down. When teams penetrated their greens on they were barely inside the top 90 and finishing drive defense. So just situationally bad were put in some bad spots. Now you look at the schedule and that's probably the saving grace. UCLA's defense won't really be able to compete when it steps up and weight class against Utah Oregon and USC borrowing injuries are horrific weather in those games. But the 9 other offense is on the schedule that UCLA plays. Not one projected inside our top 60. Again, Alabama state is an absolute drag. And the 8 other FPS offense is have an average projected efficiency rank of 89th. That number signals to me, UCLA will have about two thirds of its fights, so to speak. And its own weight class. And that at least gives them a fighting chance to maybe be below average. I mean, this is a UCLA program in general that I think you kind of hinted at that finds itself in a position of peril. Figuring out what kind of commitment they're going to make. They finally had a winning season last year going 8 and four. But for the most part, I think a lot of UCLA bruins fans, the 12 of them that actually exist that live and die with their football program. Want a chip Kelly to take them to another level, compete for conference championships. And that road will only get to be more of an uphill battle. When you begin to change zip codes and matching body for body against Big Ten foes in a much more physically, strenuous, rigorous, whatever kind of schedule you want to call it, beginning potentially as early as 2025. So let's see what UCLA can do. If they're able to put together an strong season in the wake of the 8 and four that we saw from them, a season ago. 7 tiers the vibe on chip Kelly in UCLA, by the way. My understanding is that chip has stopped putting a ton of time and effort into certain level recruits because he simply doesn't think he can land them. They've gone to this evaluation phase where they're going to try and enhance their evaluation department and find three star kids that they believe should be for star kids and mesh with their systems. There's also this idea and it's probably true to an extent that when he was running roughshod over the pack 12 at Oregon, his offense was innovative and now a lot of teams do it. Defenses are prepared for it. So those are kind of the uphill battles here that UCLA is facing maybe moving to the Big Ten taking the paycheck, helps them compete a little bit in the NIL game. We'll see what ultimately transpires there. Now I will say this. There is one team on here, in the back 12, that we neglected that you absolutely love. So do me a favor and elevator pitch me on the Oregon state beavers. I'm gonna try my best. You know me, I got my man crush on Jonathan Smith out there in Corvallis and turning around in Oregon state program. That was more or less an afterthought with Mike Riley making his third stint there, but they finally got over the hump last season, went 7 and 6. After a two and 5 COVID shortened season, there's a lot of reason to believe that Smith spurned other more prestigious offers to try and continue to rebuild the resurrection project that is Oregon state football. And when you look at the beavers, they're obviously 41 to one long shots at FanDuel sportsbook to win the pack 12. Their win total sits at 5 and a half, you have to lay a dollar 80 if you want to go over that total. And what I think is interesting when you dig into some of the comments, Jonathan Smith and I'm paraphrasing one of his quotes. You know, this place is completely been overhauled from top to bottom. He's been fortunate enough to see it fall from the beginning to be a part of it, change the culture from the way they're locker room operates the way they go through practice, the focus, the team lifting comradery. Everything else that they're doing here. Now when you look at Oregon state, I'm not going to sit here and sound off like chance Nolan is even the second coming of Derek Anderson and capable of playing at the next level. But because I know there are coaches who get pissed off and you're on a list, if you miss training table or if you miss a workout or you're late to a treatment, like what and you're not a lawyer and you're not the president. I mean, if you miss three, if you're this three treatments, if you're late to like study halls, can they just basically pull your scholarship? Well, I mean, couldn't they kick somebody off the team for that? Forget scholarship or not scholarship. You're not upholding the standards. You're kicked off the team. Yeah, I guess the area is like, what is what is deemed ridiculously excessive? I think the reason I get what you said about I'm surprised there aren't more guys going on social media. I think because it's not in anybody's best interest to advertise that, right? So I think even in a situation like that, the coaches are going to try to not throw them under the bus on the way out so that to not jeopardize them, getting a new spot. You all are certainly not going to advertise that he missed meeting. You also run into an area where if it's a player from a program that you still want to recruit, you got to be careful. You know? And I'm not saying this is going on. USC, but let's say it's a player of modern, a modern day prospect, or former player. You know, I'm not sure that's a school you want to have any potential snag with. Transfer portal was the hot topic at both places I went to. At UCLA for chip. Well, first of all, USC. I mean, Lincoln Riley says, this is a one time thing. You know, we're going to be recruiting high school players and building classes. This is a one we have to basically turn over a foreign a roster. So that's why they're loading up on transfers this year. UCLA for chip, who isn't necessarily recruiting at the level USC is. Transfer portal is kind of become their lifeblood. I mean, they actually started out that way, has first team had Wilton spade from Michigan. And a lot of people wouldn't have thought he didn't, and he didn't fit what we thought a chip Kelly quarterback would be, but in the essence, they were like really glad that they got him. And then you would see a bunch of guys that they had taken over the years. It's always, it feels like it's a half dozen. Half dozen in there. And he seems to have a good hit rate on it. He's actually RNA was the breakout running back in the pack 12 last year. He's backed or Dorian Thompson Robinson's back. Now they lost, again, transfer portal, right? Cointreau tonight was arguably their best defensive player in the last couple of years. And he was a two time transfer guy, you know? So in comes the next wave, they need more receivers. They got this guy Jake Bobo from duke. Not a household name by any means, but pretty productive at duke. No, and I think he has a connect, like they also have a big defensive tackle they got from duke, and I know he's close to David cutcliffe, one of his assistants, Jeff Ferris, who was on the duke staff. So I think they feel like that really good Intel on what they're getting from duke guys and Britain Brown was a really good running back for them was another dude guy. What's interesting to me about their philosophy is a lot of the guys are taking, not all of them, but many of those guys are coming from high academic programs, charbonneau was Michigan Evo was a cornerback from Stanford. Not a coincidence. Yeah. And so I think if you know his recruiting philosophy and his approach to evaluation, it's like, I want guys who can learn my system. I want guys who I know are really accountable. And I think you start to hear some of that about from other coaches too. I talked to chip about his approach in that philosophy for a while..

"And I can absolutely see that because I think the AAC has a pretty steep drop off after Cincinnati and SMU. I did. Thank you weather gods for delaying that Houston game by 5 hours. So we had something to watch during the PAC 12 after dark. But yeah, they almost blew it against east Carolina. Who doesn't love Dana after dark? At least once they got to overtime. They took care of business real fast. That's a sneaky good game this week, SMU against Houston, kind of to determine who will be the threat to Cincinnati. Real quick, this week in the PAC 12. It's not an official segment, but I feel like every week we throw in a pack 12 thing at the end because why not? We still care. I mean, you mentioned earlier, the story of the organ UCLA game to me was K on thibodeau, who has not been at full strength for most of the season, but now he is. And I used to like could not block him at all, certainly one on one. Some of those replays are just like, oof. Yeah, not a good situation to have. Dulcich is a really good receiving tight end, but he is going to be more maybe Michael Martinez could be up against him and have a better shot, but that was like that was unfair that one. That being said, even with that, UCLA had the ball and a chance to tire win at the end. Now I would say Kevin on thibodeau knocking out Dorian Thompson Robinson on the last drive, probably doomed the bruins who think garbage was eventually through an interception. But Anthony Brown is still not the guy you feel really confident in is going to lead you to the playoff, you know? He played better for most of that game yesterday, and then he had that terrible interception in the end zone when they should have been trying to kick a field goal or score touchdown and give themselves a cushion at the end. Mario Cristobal did go on a vigorous defense of his quarterback and his leader of his team and look, they're finding ways to win. Remember they're without CJ verdell, who's arguably the best running back on the West Coast and Travis die came in and he almost ran me. He grew up in here in Southern California as a UCLA fan. They didn't recruit him. And yeah, I got to check on my shoulder. And he worked it out and got his NFL big brother got to see it in person. That was a cool story. And the other intriguing plot line in the PAC 12 is that the other school in Oregon, the beavers are one win away from being bull eligible for the first time since 2013. But I think their goals are beyond that at this point, wouldn't how cool would it be if they don't call it the Civil War anymore? Whatever we're calling that game now was for the PAC 12 north. Yeah. That is a game. Look, how many games I feel like you've gone to like all the games you've gone to have involved in Oregon? Too, and they both involved Oregon, right? I think you maybe going to a third. To that game, Thanksgiving week. Yes. I have a hard time believing that's gonna be the biggest game of Thanksgiving weekend. But you know, we'll see. It would be easier. It would certainly be easier if I hate being in airports on Thanksgiving weekend. It would be certainly be easier to do that than to say in our remis. "Good teams put up a lot of points and particularly some non power teams putting it to some power conference teams. Jake haters in washington transfer Playing quarterback for fresno state through three games. He's got more than a thousand yards and eleven total touchdowns. I just love watching this business. Offense go to work and ucla last year. There are secondary was better than it had been the year before in twenty nineteen. They were downright nightmare gave up. I believe more than thirty touchdowns with five interceptions just absolutely miserable that year and they were a little bit better last year but had some bad games to to end the year As far as efficiency goes to get some takeaways. And that's important. And i think those takeaways are really going to determine this game. The latest line i saw on this was around eleven in. Ucla's favor. and i think i would. I'd be looking pretty strongly at fresno state covering that. I do think. Ucla's offense has looked Very good this year very fun with dtra dorian thompson robinson But i do think fresno state's gonna keep this game close or at the worst they're gonna score late and just make sure. Ucla has to play a full sixty minutes to get that. When i'm with you. I this screams trap game to me. This is getting all hype. I'm trying to break down everything we saw with some level of reason without hot Take ary. So when you think about the the big storylines, the claims of the Georgia all that stuff, what's the thing that really stood out to you is the most significant that we saw over the course of the weekend. How's it going? You to the most significant thing to start? Well, if you're in your gambling world that you were mentioning and want to make money is that the under destroyed this weekend. It was something crazy like like 48, 20 said. So really the the defense's right out of the gate, and we knew Georgia Clinton was going to be a tight defensive battle and crazy enough to kind of one exactly like it was supposed to. Penn State. Wisconsin was a defensive fight. North Carolina and Virginia Tech was a defensive fight even old misplayed a little defense last night. So it seems like early on the defense's after a year of whatever that was in 2020 and with a full season full offseason to figure it out. They've kind of tried to adjust recruits go to the transfer portal and get the guys that combat all these high powered offenses, at least for now, But with that, that Georgia defense just looks like it's going to be the truth. And if you look at their schedule going forward as long as they don't Biff, there's Florida and that's about it. And they got over the one hurdle they needed to get over. And if this defense could keep doing that, and if Georgia gets its receivers back and healthy, that all of a sudden this looks like one of those teams that's going to be on its way to really, really big things. And then it'll play Alabama the SEC Championship, Pete, Let's talk about else. You don't want to take anything away from you. You see, l A. They had a nice balanced offense. You know they could be better than expected, but this feels more like an L s U lost and they used when they've lost six of their last 11. They've given up 34 or more points in their past four games. They were five and five last year, and by the looks of it, both of their new coordinators were completely confused by what was going on. What did you make of al issues? Lost? Yeah. Well, Yes, sir. Yes, the 3rd 3rd year and three coordinators in three years, But it was a I give a little more credit to use clay on this, and there's a whole bunch of reasons we can throw it. Why else he wasn't better at night Saturday and, uh, certainly all the other the outside external things that were happening in Louisiana, you know, with a little bit, but give it to UCLA. But they're just good and they're like It took a few years for your clock to get the lines up and going and it kind of went under the radar a little bit only because chip Kelly does not recruit the five star guys. He recruits to a type. He got the guys that kind of fit what he likes to do. And sure enough, here's the rebuild. I mean, this is this is coming together. And also don't discount that it's week. One and all teams are a little rag in their first week in new clock Got that out of this system against Hawaii, where why is a pretty good team and it got rock and Dorian Thompson Robinson was bad. So he got the bad game out of the way that the timing down and then you get l s u. I think that turned out to be a huge advantage of that game went on. But you're right now. L s u Yeah. Now you can play in the SEC West. That is a rough run for the Tigers. But they've got the guys They've got the talent and they've got to NFL starting corners that have to be a whole lot better than they were on Saturday. We're not going to beat you attack. So Oklahoma came out and struggled a little bit against Tulane obviously came down to the onside kick. I mean, it was an exciting ending to that game in your mind. Is that Oklahoma having to your point to knock a little rust off for their concerns about the Sooners, too? Would tell you and give you real hard core analysis on this. If I had seen it, I don't know how it happened, but I have four screens going on to college football Saturday and a bunch of other feeds coming in. And for some reason, I missed the whole thing and didn't know really All Oklahoma's winning easily But yes, I went back and kind of saw him. Uh, yes, again, weak one. They took their foot off the gas, and they did this last year to a little bit at times, But they held on that defense is going to be a whole lot better than that. As the season goes on, Spencer rattler was great. He would find the running game was good. It was to end. All right. They just kind of kept playing. It also speaks to the other thing that we always forget about what college football starts, especially compared to the you know the crisp risk NFL games. These college football games takes forever, You know the half times or a half an hour the time out to take for forever. These are four hour games, and it's just kind of hard to maintain the intensity and focus for that long. Especially right out of the gate. And it seems like that's exactly what happened at the very end there where they just like, Okay, we got this game. Let's move on, and they almost got tagged for it. Spain and fit Sarah, Spain. "You know, I I There's a couple minds on that either. Yes, you don't get better after you lose all those skill parts around, Sam how all that was obviously a problem. There's the other mind that it's week one. And when you don't have a preseason like there is in the NFL, if you don't get a tune up against Central cupcakes, state or something. The timing is going to be off, and certainly of the they're going back to your thing before about the fired up crowd That was one of the most energized stadiums in the week one. That place was crazy. The team hope he's played like it. The defense was swarming. And Sam how on the offense was just tied off? So that's why if you know if your Hawaii's no cupcake, that's why you see a lot of being able to play Hawaii to start to get the bad game up for Dorian Thompson Robinson get their timing down. Seem to matter for weeks to I kind of think North Carolina will be a whole lot. They're going forward by kind of think it would have been better in week one. And it had that one kind of gig just to kind of get up to live speed already. Keeping it in the EC. Let's go to last night's game between Notre Dame in Florida State. That was sort of an instant classic of sort. I thought that was clearly the marquee game of the weekend, Maybe a two part question here for the casual college football fan who doesn't watch and followed as much as you. I think they're asking themselves today. All right. That was a good win for Notre Dame. But what does it ultimately mean? Because you and I have both seen some really good Notre Dame teams that make the playoff or make a Big bowl game and then eventually, they just can't match up athletically with the premier teams in college football. What's your overall perception this year on Notre Dame? Yeah, It's always kind of unfair to say. Okay, Well, you know, Norden has been good enough, but they're just not Alabama. They're just like I'm sitting on the right year. But, yeah, it's They did not look good defensively, but that's what Mike Norville offensive do. When he was at Memphis. His offenses were able to rip teams apart with big gash after big gash on the ground. And it took a year, but it looks like Florida State. Has that figured out already. So, uh, not a total free pass for the Irish on that game. Certainly, defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman is getting roasted right now. Um, but let's see what happens, going forward because on a game by game basis There are there is really no let up for the Irish. I mean, they're going to have to go to Chicago to play Wisconsin. They're going to have to play. I believe completely in places to Daddy. I believe they get Virginia Tech down the road. They definitely get us. I mean, it's game after game of tough moments for them, and that defense is going to have to be a whole lot there survived that so This. This is a good team. It's not going to be a college football playoff team. I was just going to say I have their schedule pulled up. We were talking about it a little bit earlier. If that team makes the playoffs for makes one of those big time New Year's Day Bowl games, they certainly will have earned it. They play Wisconsin. In Chicago. They host Cincinnati. They play on the road against Virginia attack. They have USC and North Carolina and back to back weeks, and then they go on the road to Stanford. I think Stanford's a little bit better than what we saw this weekend against K State. This is a difficult stretch for Notre Dame that if they make the college football playoff this year, no one could say that they didn't earn it on the field. Well, they've got it before. I mean, even when they did get their doors blown off the college football playoff. They didn't have the merits there because they don't duck anybody. But again. There's a difference between you know, getting through a game one game at a time schedule like that. And then running up against the the Alabama Wall. So I mean, the college football playoff in his own separate little thing, But you're right. I mean, obviously delivered Erin it with that schedule, and it is better than it showed last night. And again. A lot of things sometimes just chalked up to week one and adjust from there. Let's see if the Irish could be that. Right now we're talking college football with Pete few tech. He does great work for college football news dot com. Pete. It's funny that we're having this conversation. And I wonder in the end as any of it matter because Alabama looks good again. Alabama with the 44 13 win to Miami this weekend, Miami was making all these name, image likeness deals and they're doing all of that in Alabama came through was like Nope. Yeah, They just kind of keep on doing what they do. And you know the thing about Alabama this year. Going back to the defense comments before is where Obviously the offense was fun. They got all the highlights and Bryce. Young looks great there, the big plays all across the board, and they've obviously got the weapons there. It's the defensive side this year. That is going to be the real killer because they've built that up a couple years ago, they suffered a move injuries and had issues that linebacker And they threw a bunch of guys to the wolves, and they struggled in. That would even though Alabama still college football playoff national championship good, they struggled, but they work their way up. And now their experience, they got even stronger their way deep That is they all NFL caliber Linebacking Corps, a unit that's as good as the relatively speaking as the wide receivers were last year for Alabama. And oh, by the way, bright young looks like he's really good at that offense is great, too. But look at Alabama when you have a Bill O'Brien is your offensive coordinator, and you have all that talent to work with. Good things are going to happen. What's so impressive Pete about Alabama is every team in the country goes through attrition, and they probably go through it at a higher level because the graduation and guys leaving early for the NFL, like we saw it this weekend with Clemson, like you can't lose a Trevor Lawrence, TN and all the pieces that they lose and still continue to maintain the same quality that you kept. The last. I don't know 5 to 7 years with Clemson. None of that stuff seems to matter at Alabama quarterback gone running back gone too wide receivers first round draft picks, and they just seem.

"Linebackers to rush the passer and as long as they're deep passing game Can compete with Obama's deep passing game. This Georgia team is a legitimate threat. Now Joe mentioned that win for Obama over Miami. I mean, it was a route of Miami. I'm not sure any of us were shocked by that. But how much Trevor? Can we take away from that wind from Bama? Do you feel like Bama has reloaded and not missed a step here from losing all of that talent that they lost in this blast draft? Yeah, it's not fair. Is it ever? It's just It's just not fair this at the end of the season. I think we'll look back at this. Miami defense is one of the better defenses in the country and one of the best in the A. C. C. Obama was the first year starting quarterback just completely dismantled them. And so I think this is a bigger statement than it seems because overall Obama's that much better than Miami right now, But the Miami defense is a tough nut to crack. And the thing that impressed me about Bryce Young was his poise under pressure and the way that he always sought to solve problems with his arm. Rather than his legs. If if at all possible In the spring game, he showed that he would move around you'd be under pressure. He keeps his eyes downfield and he'd make really nice throws. But in the spring game He knew that he wasn't going to get hit in this game. That's all Miami was trying to do to him is get to him and blast it and they blitzed all game long trying to speed up this process. So what you saw is that even when the Pocket broke down. Bryce Young, first start of his college career would move around and then when there was opportunity for him as a mobile quarterback to take off because there were space up front. Very often. He did not take off. He slowed down a little bit and kept his eyes downfield and solve the problem with his arm, And that's in his first start. I guess the very good defense this Alabama team right now. It's going to be really, really hard to beat them. Trevor manage joining us here on Greenie on ESPN Radio. Bigger takeaway from UCLA's 38 27 upset win over l s u U C l A is legit or else you is in big, big trouble. Yes. And yes, you feel a is with yet? I mean, they they should have graphic on the game that I hadn't realized that the starting 11 of US defence were all 4th 5th or sixth year, guys. And then they put in some transfers on offense, including Zach Sharpening from Michigan. He wasn't a whole lot there before he lit up. L S U s defense, right? What they need is for Dorian Thompson Robinson, their quarterback to be a little more efficient to complete a higher percentage of his passes, But he had some big plays in this game. I think u C l A is legit, but What in the world is wrong with L s u last year, having the best starting corners in the country. They were one of the worst passing defenses in the country. So how does that happen? What happens in part because guys are thinking too much and not playing enough. They're out of position, etcetera. I gave up a lot of big place, so they brought in a new defensive coordinator. Simplify a little bit. Let the guys play fast. And you let him up. So I think there's a combination else. You has a lot to worry about, because as good as you call a is and they are, they are quite good, much better than they've been in recent years. They're still not Alabama or Texas A and M And so L s u has a lot to fix on that defense offensively. Quarterback Matt Johnson, Mass. Johnson to for a lot of yards, But boy, the guy the guy had a lot of learning experiences in this game, didn't he? Yes, learning experiences. That is certainly one way to put it. Also, though, NBC Sports Washington So I have to get in a quick question here about your Washington football team. Could it be a potential landing spot for Cam Newton? Don't think that Cam Newton would necessarily be the right move there, though. This is a relatively young roster, and Cam Newton is a massive personality. Right now, the locker room chemistry is working. It's good, but if you bring in Cam, there's a wild card thrown into the locker room that who knows how it would who would handle the chemistry right at the back up quarterback. Now, Tyler Heinecke has proven that he's an effective guy in this system. He knows this system and he's good at it. Remember last year that Hi. Nicky was taking finals at Old Dominion University near the end of the NFL season. Washington called him up because they had so many injuries the quarterback and asked him to be a stopgap. A couple of weeks later, he was starting in the playoffs against Tom Brady's Tampa Bay fucking ears. He led Washington to an eight point loss. He played really well, so I think they like their backup quarterback situation. I don't know that throwing Cam into that locker room is best for this team. To come out of the first real college football weekend of the season, with all apologies to last weekend, which is like a few Gezi weekend, But this is like a real weekend. Georgia Beating Clemson. That was a Top five matchup. And then you had that the big story for a lot of people. The other contender. U C L A up ending. Louisiana state in the Rose Bowl, as down goes Louisiana State Unless you losing much of the chagrin of their fan base, so let us discuss now toss up question here. This toss up question more meaningful victory. Or the beginning of the college football season. Georgia upending Clemson or U C L A surprising L S u So I'm gonna answer this. First. I am going to go with the Bruins. I'm going to go with you See a lot here now. My observations. You've got weight class, snapping turtle and Madonna. And we will lock all of these things together into an adequate. Valor monologue number one number one. So while George's win over Clemson gets more attention, it was obviously superior team Georgia's got Ideas of winning a national championship service Clemson. But again as long as you got Russell Wilson and Bobby wagon you're gonna compete. I still say the Seahawks. You're only going to be nine and eight. Now the Arizona Cardinals are gonna be an interesting came to me. I think they're only going to be 897 and 10 some along those lines. And I would say Cliff Kingsbury and his team are going to have to figure out a way to finish the second half season. It's even It's a 17 game season now. And when you look at what Arizona has done the last two years, and I like Kyler Murray, and I don't just like Cliff Kings, where I think they've done a good job. The problem is if the season was eight games long instead of 16 and 17. They might have been a playoff team. But it's not because in the last two years, Cliff Kingsbury's first two years there are combined five and 11 in the second half of the season, so that's not good. They've got to figure out a way to play a whole season. They're also going to have to figure out a way to run the ball better and not be so reliant on Kyler Murray and his legs. You got to convert more third downs, and, you know, I don't know how they practice. Maybe they pray. I know they're just not fresh down the stretch, so the other issue that Arizona is going to have is they have showdowns with 5 2020 playoff teams in the final seven weeks. So I think Arizona will fade at the end. Most likely, if past is prologue, they got five playoff teams. So I've got the Niners winning the West Iran, finishing second and Seahawks third. So I'm going to give the Rams a hall pass and see they're going to make the playoffs..

Because you get the is in the focus of the college football world on your conference early in the year. Remember indiana and i are going to play early here in the season so all the focus is going to be on the big ten this this week and granted. There's a couple of big ins on saturday outside of the big ten but the bulk of the college football schedule is going to rest right here in the big ten conference. And they're going to have to prove it. Now that wisconsin penn state game though. Here's what's so interesting is that those are two teams that have bona fide. I would say expectations to potentially challenge and win. Their division may be penn state. A little less so because of ohio state but certainly wisconsin so getting off on the right foot as was proven a year ago in penn state. Not being able to do that is going to be very important for those two teams. I think wisconsin such a great program. Nobody nobody talks about wisconsin because their coach wears a hoodie. And he's doesn't sell you know he's not a big salesman or anything. He looks like my account. But i love wisconsin. I like what they stand for. Klatt i like what you stand for. You gotta be able to play. And then here's the thing that i think we should all focus on as we do in the nfl bit column. We talk about the supporting cast. Right how what. This rookie quarterback doesn't have the supporting cast this one. Does you know what's the fit. What does it look like all around that player well around. Cj stroud it looks unbelievable they have potentially the best offensive line in the country. In fact when i'm talking with their coaches they talk about you. Know when you're talking about the lifetime of nfl contracts sitting on the offensive line just for ohio state. You're looking at like a quarter of a billion dollars in front of cj stroud. They are legit up front. They've got a great stable of running backs including a guy that no one has seen yet. Trayvon henderson a true freshman very excited to see him tonight. They've got the best and deepest stable of wide receivers in all of college football. They've got a guy that potentially could win. The mackey award is the best tight end. Jeremy record it is an embarrassment of riches for cj stroud. So if you're going to come in with no experience granite at a place with high expectations. But this is a type offense that you want wanna quarterback and i didn't even mention that they've got one of the best minds and play collars sport.

She's cheerleading at a football game. I assume is that right. Yeah game yeah. It was out in channel islands so it was a little bit of a drive. But i love it. I think she gets into it. She's having a blast. I i'm a big fan of watching her. So i'll be out there every. Yes yes oh to go. But i do. I was watching. I saw highlights and i washed nice talking to a bunch of people about it and i know that the chardonnay kid looked really really good. He only had six carries but he went up for over one hundred yards. He was tearing up the The hawaii defense brown britain brown played really well too. So did you what was your takeaway overall. That they looked really good. The defense look good. They look more aggressive than normal. The offense looked good in the running game but that dorian thompson robinson the quarterback who is in this fourth year here and needs to have a big year. This year looked very very bad. Just like he has been for a little while so playing. Lsu this weekend is going to be a the question. Is this going to be worth the price of admission for hopeful. Ucla fans kaplan your thoughts.
