"Your an nba if you're a basketball fan prior an nba fan. It's not until you get out of college that you start to listen Like and watch college basketball as well. Yeah and there are certainly exceptions to that. I'm just saying in general. I believe that to be true. So i think maybe selfishly through to see their reaction through there is two. Oh my god. My dad's calling an nba game. Yeah how cool is that. That would really be a bucket. Lists thing for me. That would be cool. I know we had Donnie nelson Was announced yesterday as we record this that he was leaving. The mavericks was yeah exactly and My son is a huge cowboys. Always number one but As he said dirk nowitzki is his roger staubach because you know dirk had a championship in his lifetime Born in eighty nine but so he doesn't remember the super bowl years with the cowboys. so all he's remembered is the disappointment So and we were excited to watch. Luca play Dynamic young player zimmer's crazy. How young he is and you know you know so yeah. I think that would be a fun that that seems like a good goal. Yeah so i'm gonna flip it over. Bruce wise are there swish list of songs. You haven't heard bruce perform live that's on your bingo card or your wishlist. You know i. I can honestly say there's one and i was lucky enough a couple of years ago to be a guest. Dj on straight radio. So i had to come up with my seven songs. Yes and this is. This is one of those songs. Because and i said during that hour that it. It's you know it's my golden ring so to speak. It's the one that i'm still wishing or hoping for and i've never been assigned guy the last maybe the last half dozen shows i've gone to. I've been lucky enough to be in the pit. Yeah but i've never made a sign. If there was a sign this might be it But pretty flamingo is is probably the song that i would love to hear him. Perform in person that i have not yet heard When i first heard it it was like one of those moments. It was a uranium moment for me. Because i never heard it at all before again. I'm sure there's tons of springsteen pencil relate. What i've been you know he's been playing out songs since the seventies listen. I only heard it. Maybe ten years ago and it was a mind blower for me and so that would be one that that i haven't heard that i would love to hear. That's cool I know that To go back what you said earlier with the maggio right I'm a big comic book fan. I grew up reading comic books and one of the things often said is the writers. Need to remember that.

"Nba writer for the undefeated. Marc spears into some of the things that happened last night and also. Some news from the nba broke this morning. We're going to talk about that in a moment. Rob nicovic will join us as well quarterback situation in the nfl. I have a theory of what teams to should do based on where they draft a rookie. Quarterback's we'll talk to rob about that because there are two teams in particular that are facing that very dilemma and also in our second hour don mclean for nba player. My former partner on clipper broadcast there in los angeles. He's going to join us as well because the clippers have a chance to do something tonight. They've never done and they will have to do it without kawhi leonard. So what's the likelihood of that happening. Don mclean will join us a little bit later as well but a couple of nba notes to pass along then. We're going to have some conversation about last night. Because jaanus i'm gonna leave it there. Hold on i up and asked reporting this morning that the celtics are trading kemba walker the number sixteen overall pick and twenty twenty one draft and a twenty twenty five second round. Pick to oklahoma city for al horford bringing him back to boston. Moses brown and a twenty twenty three second round pick. Boston get some flexibility. Moving up that seventy-three million dollars that they owed to kimball walker with the return of horford. Okay see as three first round picks in july. So what does that say about boston's mentality with their current roster now that brad stevens has moved from the coach to the front office. That's a question that i want to pose to marc spears coming up a little bit later but also this news from the new york times today. Report about mark stein former. Maverick star dirk nowitzki rejoining the organization there in dallas as a special advisor his first assignment at the request of mark cuban assisting the team and its search for new head of basketball operations and then coach so there was some reporting recently about the mavericks in terms of turmoil inside their front office. Mark cuban said no. That's not true at all. we're cool. And all of a sudden. Donnie nelson leads. Rick carlisle leaves. You gotta bring dirk nowitzki. What's really going on. Down there in dallas will talk to marc spears about that coming up shortly. But first it's time for straight talk brought to you by straight talk wireless jaanus and the bucks stave off elimination last night in the walkie to force a game seven against the nets in brooklyn tomorrow night. Janas went for thirty seventeen three assists. He did not shoot one single three in that game. Most of his stuff came in the paint and we had a conversation here yesterday on. Espn radio about whether jaanus a is that guy in could he be that guy last night. So the question to you eighty eight say espn eight hundred seventy nine. Three seven seven six or hit me on twitter at michael eaves was janas that guy last night i say no granny. He went for a fourth game of thirty and ten. Sure fine but was he that guy last night and again my point is we keep trying to make certain players out to be something that they are not based on what their pay where they were drafted. What have you. And i think some of that clearly has been on janas susan. Mvp in this league. Who's the defensive player of the year in this league but that doesn't mean he's that guy in those moments right and last night i don't think he was. I think he was the best robin he could be but he wasn. Batman do batman wasn't game. Chris middleton chris middleton was batman last night for the bucks and he probably needs to be batman again on sunday. Excuse me saturday. If they're going to beat the nets in game seven. Chris middleton recorded a postseason career high thirty eight points. He added ten rebounds five assists five steals. He became just the fifth player with thirty five points. Ten rebounds five steals and five assists in a playoff game. That's batman and those numbers alone. Don't tell you exactly the role that khris middleton played last night. Consider this if you remember. There was a stretch. Were kevin durant score. Ten straight points for brooklyn during one third quarter run and they narrowed fourteen point lead to five remember that he then sparked a ten zero run early in the fourth quarter that again got the margin down to five but each time. Do you know the response came from chris. Middleton he either got it basket or he got to the free throw line. that's what those dudes do in those moments. And you know who recognize that. Kevin durant for a couple of times and then. I thought they responded out. Everyone we made got to give him credit for that. But i think we need now early ourselves into the game we were down twelve fifteen and then we got back. It eighty to seventy seven thousand three point shooter. That's why they of took control. So i felt like we were right dated which just cutting it over to the hop was. Chris middleton over. He was eleven of sixteen from the floor. Eleven of twelve from the free. Throw line now. Drew holiday also added twenty one points. Eight rebounds five assists. That's great but the guy who really stopped the runs was chris middleton. He was the guy that you need it in those moments. It wasn't jaanus and that's fine. That's okay. We keep trying to put certain expectations on players based on what they make especially in the eyes of fans and even some of these wars they received but like as i said yesterday these players don't pay themselves that vote for themselves. These postseason awards khris middleton. Was that guy. Can he be that guy in game seven on the road. That is the real question because you know one thing about kevin durant coming up in game. Seven whether james harden is available to go again on that bad hamstring and and play better or kyrie irving comes back after missing. The last two games with that sprained ankle. You know one thing about k. D. he's going down blazing. He's emptied all clips. All mags will be empty from kevin durant in game seven. He's not about to leave that court. He didn't do enough to help his team win. Will we see the same performance in game seven. We saw from him in game five. We don't know but we know katie's going to try to duplicate that performance because he believes most likely that that's what it's gonna take especially if he doesn't have kyri back and of james harden is not able to be more.

"My list. Y'all okay. I can't i had put zion at six. I can't puts on on the top five right now because unfortunately for young players the stability and health of your franchise is huge to the trajectory of your career. He's about to head into his third season with third coach so Until they get together. It's hard to face the league when your team isn't in the playoffs. What we had here is a failure to communicate because i top five list six so taking liberties already and your see we have to understand. What's the definition of face of the league. Because you know when we put everything jason. Tatum is a great player. Who has the potential of continued to be a great place for a long time facing the league. Type personality player. That's why lamelo lamelo has got the personalities or social media. Luca as you said plays with a smile international. He's got that the international man of mystery all these different guys that diane has that as well. He's already it's already baked into design on that. He has all that during the interviews ads. As a face of the franchise kind of of the right space of the league. Phase of the league is much different level. So you know i. i'm. I'm actually agree with key lamelo. Yes yes i you know donovan. Mitchell is a guy that if he gets to a bigger market science. And you don't want these guys face the league which you gotta think when you think base league you think lebron james guy of that magnitude any of these guys have that type of magnitude together and we started talking about it. I'm not just talking about the skills on court. I'm talking about off the court of appeal the ability the and when you go you think about the maceration of where we are. Now larry bird. Magic johnson eventually became jordan. Kobe shack all them guys win and they got personality. So that's extremely important. We talk about faces of leagues and geographically where they play on at to three nine fritsch. Radio was good because trae young is definitely got that star potential taking bows at. Msg tall steph curry. Yeah no. I like praying for sure djalmir. No john moran his twitter on fire. The active put everybody know murray. And we're gonna miss some guys a personality contest. You should reword. It looked at the list. I didn't get it. Can harake guys here rise once again. Thank you so much. We'll see you later okay. According to the undefeated expires. Dallas mavericks superstar. Luka doncic is said to be very unhappy with the firing of longtime gm donnie nelson luca eligible for the rookie extension where the projected two hundred million dollars. And when asked how talks between the two are going. Spiritus people to luca or saying quote. What talks okay key. You think. Luka is going to stay with the mavericks his entire career based based on everything that has been going on of late. I honestly don't a couple weeks ago. Lucas hey you know. They asked him about his a super max extension. He said why. Wouldn't i entertain that and then now with spears is saying that conversation hasn't even taken place in. It may not take place so when you look at that you look at what they did. In terms of fire don nelson someone who has been known since his teenage years then affects certain people in certain ways about how you feel about an organization and if you truly are trying to win a championship. Sometimes certain cities towns dole track. The type of players that can help you win a championship it. Today's nba. This is not nba of old where the general managers are selecting the free agents. The free agents are selected. The team so of luca has an opportunity to go play maybe in atlanta. Maybe in a miami here in new york. He's certainly can take advantage of this from an internet standpoint. Just imagine if he came to new york it became a new york duplicated the same success and he's having now the rest of his career in new york which means another superstar joins him. They go on to capture nba title. He'd be the toast of the town. Not only here but internationally build off of him. Lebron james wanted to sign him to a signature shoe deal. Okay that tells you something because luka has that appeal in that ability in dallas. Can you get a real by superstar to help you win. Nobody in the nba. That i think has won a super one eight a nba title by themselves. They've all had a nother. Robin to batman. Can't he attract that in dallas. I don't think so first of all you even putting him on. The knicks is a setup. You did that just to distract me. I can't you know what that does not make started tingling negative shock forms my eyes for a minute city. Can you imagine i said. Stop it because we've been doing that way too long you with the light here and i will tell you why. Don't imagine him wearing another uniform for the most of his career. Because you never know when guys get leader and turkey. I bowl mark. Cuban is too smart of own. He knows what he's got. He also knows that no one can offer more than they can at two hundred two hundred million dollars he can offer that. And you're crazy if you turn it up. Now it's a brilliant strategy to if you're luca and whoever's his side with start saying like you know what i don't know if we're going to sign up because you don't like what's going on right and they're donnie nelson with somebody. He was close to that was somebody that had success in that front office and things have changed their now with a shadow. Gm that they've got going on there but if you're mark cuban you do listen to your players in fact. He said he does listen to luca but should a twenty two old be making for an office decisions or should you already know what he needs because you have a good relationship with him and understand his game will make him great so has dallas ever attracted free agents to never to have to championship. Yes they did why they drafted. Well they got novicki. Then they built around him they were able to get key players. Able to get another star. Like a jason kidd. Who helped him win a championship. So you just gotta do. What donnie nelson did before he was let go which is build a roster properly around your star that you drafted so listen to the kid if he has something to say but you don't seek out his advice you should know him by now. You should know what he needs. What makes them tick what fits with him. And if it's not porzingas you've got to bite the bullet and make a move but whatever it is you do not let him go. You keep him on your roster you keep them in your franchise. Because he's not just the face your franchise. He's going to be the face of the league. We just talked about it. Mark cuban too smart of an owner to do what a lot of other owners might do and panic in this situation. He can handle the. It's not about mark cuban panicky. It's about luca wanting to stay in dallas and play. You mentioned dirk nowitzki. How long did it take dirk to win a championship. Ten years.

"No it says again. It's the sixers. Thank you thank you. I appreciate it again. Bads what are the mavs. No no you. Your glasses are no good. I want to hear about the mavs. Anyway go ahead and give us what you've got on the mavs because donnie nelson being fired so the athletic comes out with this article and mark. Cuban calls it bullshit. It's about bob bulgaria shadow. Gm increasing power friction with luca. Now there's going to be a press conference with luka today and he hasn't signed an extension what do you think is gonna happen there. I think he's a sunday extension. Nobody in the history of basketballs turned down the rookie scale extension. When it said the max level and the case luca it's going to be one level higher than a regular max for someone of his experience. He's going to get the roads rule. Max which is two hundred million dollars roughly over five years. He's not turning that down guys. I'm sorry it's never happened is not going to start now. But but there is some serious damage control that needs to happen within the dow's mavericks organization I think what the article hinted at was a friction. Not between luca and babul garrison as i said in my essay yesterday but more about a friction inside that fun office and they've got to figure all that out because at this function does see down to where the players are. A does impact. How the team does doesn't donnie nelson being out validate that report. I mean look. The the thing that i know about that report is at somebody inside. The mavs spoke. That's what we knew. What whether what. They said was factual or not right for instance. There's a part in there where they talk about. Bob got up towards the end of a game and went to the end of a loss and everyone was miffed about that. Like this guy. Just quit on the game. But the reality is bob as there are. Many staffers on many teams in this league goes in before halftime. And before the end of the game because they got to get the imf already for the team when they come back in the locker room. I know this is a video coordinator. I did this to. I go inside because you gotta get the stuff ready so that when the team comes in. We've got our video ready we've got our talking points ready. Whatever that wasn't a we are about to lose his game thing. That was a. I gotta go get my job done. And so the idea that that would be construed as bob quit on the team. Whatever tells you this is coming from inside and this is coming from someone. Who has an agenda. Donnie nelson had been there. How long a quarter century. Twenty five years. So what does it mean. It means that it's no longer. Bob bulgaria shadow. Gm correct it. Means bob vulgarities powerbroker there. now yeah. I mean yes and no because i think there's more to the job than just. Hey we should get this player. Hey these are. The lineup should run which is extensively. What a lot of bob's job is lineup. Kind of validation and trying to figure out what the best possible combinations are the substitution patterns. And all that and also like you know player valuation negotiation a different tax talk about gm. One of the biggest things is my ability negotiate with agents. My ability to negotiate with other teams was poorly my book and negotiate with my owner to make sure that the things that we want are the things that we get and the things that we're not so crazy about we keep them away. That's gm's job. And so why. I've i've no bob and i think he's great at town evaluation. I don't know about his negotiation skills. I don't know about his interpersonal skills from leadership. Now you said you said he could be an asshole you do know about his personal skills. You said flatly that he can be an asshole. Yeah also. I've never met bob the leader of an organization. Maybe there's a change that happens when when he realizes the actual mantle of leadership is upon me and now i have to behave in a different way. Maybe maybe he's just being an asshole kind of way that i'm an asshole. I don't have to no one answers to me. So i don't have to worry about hurting anybody's feelings but the reality is once you're in an organization you and your rising up that becomes more important. But i mean stuff like rotations and lineups combinations. Shouldn't that be riccar lyles. Well the ideas that he is providing information that helps redo his job. do better. and that's all in a perfect world. That's all any of us want. We want someone who's gonna be the decision maker and then we want everybody else to be supplying information for decision making us to make better decisions. I don't think it's bob's way or the highway by do think. Rick is on board with the suggestions that bob makes stugotz here for our friends over at draftkings. I love draftkings. I spent all my time there seriously. I have my mail sent there. I.

"Available in video form on all of our social media channels, feed the pig. Feed that pig my tail, sweetheart, As Doc Rivers would say, Pull it. Pull my tail, sweetheart. Pull! Pull it. The Mavericks fire Donny Nelson. After more than 20 years with the organization. And remember, I just did the story earlier in the week. Report from the athletic That said Luca has been at odds. With that dude vulgaris. Lifetime gambler, the professional sports better Who made a ton of money doing that that Mark Cuban hired him to do basketball Analytics and essentially run the organization. Well, Luca apparently has had his run ins with vulgaris. And now Donnie Nelson apparently lost a power struggle with Bulgari's And this is so problematic. It is so problematic because Donny Nelson, whose dad was Don Nelson, Donnie Nelson. Helped build a roster that won an NBA championship. Donnie Nelson helped build rosters that went to two NBA finals. Donnie Nelson helped build rosters that went to the playoffs 14 consecutive years with Dirk Nowitzki at the center and Donny Nelson. Helped orchestrate the acquisition of LinkedIn Chick. Vulgaris did do any of that. Vulgaris into any of that vulgaris is a brash sports better. And Mark Cuban thinks he's on the front side. He's at the cutting edge of some type of competitive advantage with a guy that understands roster management and building and statistics. All because of analytics, having never actually worked within an N B A or Professional sports front office. There's no experience there. So Luke is at odds with him. Apparently, Donny Nelson's been at odds with him and guess who survives. This is bad. This is not good. The writing is on the wall that Cuban is trusting the wrong guy here. And I'm not saying that Donny Nelson's just always hit dingers because this roster that's been built around Lucca has not been very good at the poor. Zynga's trade did not pay the dividend that they thought that it would, and they've got this albatross of a contract with Porzingis. They are still wrapped around their necks for the next three seasons. However. I'm going to trust the guy that has the experience within a front office within your front office for two decades. Over a sports gambler. That's a Johnny come lately that insists that he's got it figured out and has friction with your franchise guy. I'm not going to bet on that guy. And I'm not sure if this is more Cuban being stubborn. I'm not sure if Vulgarians has convinced Cuban of something.

"Temic, Man MBA inside of here with us on the Goodyear hotline moving away from that Luca and the Mavs right now, Luca, we had my ring, and I had this conversation last night. He's not even he's already on. No. Just one name basis. It's it's Kobe. It's dark. You know, Luca, he's to that status right now. When you look at what he's done in the year three, and now the MAV trying to avoid that play in spot at the seven seed, just describe Lucas game and how he's viewed Not just because you color cover more than just a math, not just by his teammates, but around the league. He's widely recognized as a bona fide superstar, you know, with you and argue, top five top 10. Whatever the case, just do just turned 22 years old. A couple months ago, and nobody questions that he is, You know, absolutely among the very elite players in the NBA A and, you know, obviously being that young Being this good already. You know what the possibilities are, You know, I said last year. I think he's the most talented player in franchise history. And you know, that was with Dirk. Having just retired. I had a pretty damn good career, but we just in terms of pure talent like it's not. It's not close, and he's having the best regular season. In flames on history. Now he won't be an M V. P not this year. But you know, I would bet on him winning at least one if not multiple, M V P s on the course of his career, And then you know what? What comes along with all that? Is, If you got that kind of a player, you've got the most difficult piece to find in terms of the championship puzzle. It puts pressure on you to figure out the rest of that puzzle. Ondo. That's on Mark Cuban. It's on Donnie Nelson. Comrade call out. I think they've got you know some potential complementary pieces. But you know you're not one of the championship in today's MBA is a one star team. And right now there's only one started the Maddox nose gonna be, Uh, you know, a guy that they can count on on on a consistent basis. Follow him on Twitter at ESPN. Underscore McMahon MBA inside of forest here at ESPN. Timmy Man here on the Goodyear Hotline. Timmy Mack. We'd really appreciate it. Have a great weekend man, and we'll talk soon Thanks, but I appreciate it, fellas. That's our pleasure to me, Mac right here on ESPN Radio with Meyer Metcalfe. I mean, Fitzsimmons and Myron. We'll get back in his eye on coming up in a bit. But when you hear him talk about Luca like that. You know, and you look at LeBron's first three years as as our man J Clinic was talking about last night, Loki and Lucas first three years to the stats mean sometimes numbers don't lie. You could make numbers dance a lot of different ways. But Luca what he's doing right now. Coach. This is your world. Your basketball guy. It's special. A man and I just feel like they're gonna be a couple of guys where you go. This is the MBA. These are the faces of the MBA after LeBron leaves, and he's at the top of that list. Because he's just that good. He could be bigger than Dirk. Which that says a lot even in Dallas. Consider what Dirk bid like he's on that pass. Dirk is the sixth All time leading scorer in the historian out there dream. Superstars mimicking that fade away off legged knee up shot, right? I mean, Wow, that's high praise. I will switch gears back to hope in a little bit coming up next, the head coach of a college football team, I might change the way the game is played next. We're.

"Season contract with guaranteed money beyond be light for twenty, one, twenty two, and beyond that limits their potential Max aspirations for that year. So it'll be interesting to see like. What Donnie Nelson there and their front office does because they could get somebody who can help him right now and theoretically I would actually push Dallas if they find the right player to use it because they could get somebody below market, and then you can clearly if a great player wants to come to you next year, you can clear ten to fifteen million. In, BAD MONEY PRETTY EASILY ORLANDO EVAN four new is really the domino. Their number one is he can opt out a seventeen million I'm starting to project that he's not going to as of this point is we really go through this market unless of course, he's going to return. So I'm actually going to change my production and pencil him in for that seventeen million. Dollar, player option but I think he's he's going to be there in some form or fashion. I think the only way he would opt out as if he didn't extension instead or he might opt in and do an extension of that. So I'm projecting to be on this magic team that'll put them about twelve million over the cap and about eleven million under. The tax, they're not going to pay the tax for this team I would imagine. So you know maybe there's some other moves they could make. They've also got chuma coming in next year of who they just didn't sign this year as a first round draft pick than they also have a the fifteenth overall draft pick this season. So again, I not necessarily seen. Them using full mid-level they might use part of it. I would be my projection will and remember their unusual circumstance with John Isaac presumably missing all the next season. How hard are they gonNA push? Yeah. That's a great point to you. Know could be more of a consolidation year could even look to try move Vuckovich as well about you know who who are the. Takers going to it. The more I think about this offseason particularly with the unclear money situation. I think that a lot of teams are just going to kind of go into next year with pretty similar rosters and then see how it shakes out that we're gonNA, see a crap ton of movement at the deadline going into that huge twenty twenty one off season on. To, other things in one, we're going to see some challenge traits just teams that think they have to do something and it's just, but it's not clearing the decks giving up relax or something. It's just like we're going to trade our trash for your trash, and then the other one is just the intrigue you talked about the potential at the deadline of early movers versus late movers for twenty twenty one and you could there are various examples encapsulates. Here's you can think about the nets looking good that they got off some of their money like the Alan Crab thing early in the twenty nine in the twenty one. Thousand nine off season, and then it costs more later on the warriors had to give up a first round pick with Andre Iguodala and I don't know where all those are going in the summer of Twenty in the fall of twenty twenty. It's GonNa be really interesting. Yeah, and we're seeing this too. If the CAP were six million dollars higher like it was projected to be a lot of these teams we're talking about probably could be using their mid level but they're just now that extra six million lowering of the tax the apron could really affect that. So maybe there's some possibility that they'll just raise it up. Artificially even though there's a big I mean, that might be something that I would consider if I were the players association and say, Hey, you know what? I will agree this year to a higher escrow but you also need to have the cap up at one fifteen were supposed to be instead of one nine so that guys can sign these contracts and then when revenue gets back to normal, they get paid at where they normally would have been studied just having a year like two. Thousand Eighteen where there's no space that nobody can do anything. So the other proposal that I would seriously consider as the players is a higher award disparity between the salary cap in the luxury tax because there aren't going to be the many seems anyway, and maybe you throw the tax way higher and that would increase the apron as well will enable more teams use a good idea. "You join us Mavericks and words tonight the words try to make it to the two in a row Donnie Nelson would not like that to happen is the president basketball operations for the mavs the judges courtesy of the room a gas line hi Daddy how are you once a warrior always a warrior what do you say we we're here to help ways out tonight I'm sorry now darn it jabs on Kona yeah I would say I checked the checks did your dad less than when I was texting you down a and all I got from a back was playing golf so I guess that how long did you go visit your your your dad on Maui I'm going out I'm going out next week low your card to believe he turns eighty this year and it's yeah it's crazy it's just you know these guys that have just been you know icons and you know just the basketball guys Jerry Colangelo turns eighty this week it's just hard to believe you blink and there goes ten twenty thirty years at our yeah I credit when you work with both of them you work with Jerry when you were in Phoenix as an assistant coach in new your data but the warriors in in Dallas so let let let's just start and we want to get to Luka obviously and what he's doing but I I go back to when you found sureness Marshall owners and then you found Derek and then you get little guy and you make the trade for Chris stops and I you know I RC and popped a great credit for their international scouting but I think the point giving made you did you have cultivated the best international players to ever come to American play in the NBA so was it the the you know that for a to get Sharon is shot of the old Soviet Union and the Soviet block that opened it up for you and and just how much international scouting do you do down well you know it's crazy because when you were cutting your teeth that I was cut our teeth what this twenty five years ago back in the bay area maybe even longer I think it doesn't matter what number just a number though literally at survival I mean we you know we're back then we work very good and we were just trying to you know assemble an NBA team in this is so so we had the we have any free agents that wanted to go there we have to graph well and we you know we please Molly was there we got there so we drafted mention to me or for us to get you know real players that wanted to come back to the bay area back in those days we had to go fishing in places that people didn't know existed which of the former Soviet Union and chase guys like us a bonus and bloody devault since ruinous and we're just trying to get a good old fashioned injection of talent into the warriors back then you can you can I guess you guys kind of started it and then of course you know Dirk comes along and now it's old hat but but that that that sort of kind of a revolution a well look I was just we was locked because you know back when I was sleeping on no Russian couches you know when trying to recruit some of these guys nobody thought the the the wall would ever fall in our timing just happened to be perfect and there was a slew of guys that was you know you're sure this was the first to sign in and be a contract of the former Soviet athlete but didn't have to go through the you know the Soviet inner sport the the the the the the communist machine and then shortly thereafter you know the whole wall opened up and then you have you know the Yugoslavian guys and some bonus later on and so it was just it was a lot a lot a lot of hard work and all relationships and then you're not only found Derek and made the trade to get him on draft died but yeah I remember you when he was a rookie and even later getting on the floor in the sweat in the two years when he was struggling to start and look at what he and I became I barely the greatest international player of all time and then last year in his final year with you down it's fitting that he is there to mentor little guy so take me to watch local was last year when he was really good and he was a rookie of the year but the guy I see now is physically bigger and stronger is a wider base is going to the goal they can't stop armies taken the step back and right now I think we're talking about on a short list of guys that are in V. P. so what what do they do in the offseason Daddy they get this much better he was great last year it's funny you mention those two guys in the same sentence they're complete opposites in a lot of respects rudeness you know when we came to Dallas it was a lot like the warriors we just you know there were no players we're tried to turn the franchise around and so you know Nelly and I show up in the dark gem in Germany and there's this you know young the German guy that you know we would love than seven feet can shoot at this and that but really nobody knew very much about them and then he and master their careers together and you know twenty one years later Dirk is you know he's the kind of the the the Nolan Ryan of basketball the Rogers fought back from the basketball here Dallas I just had a street named after look on the other hand was an extremely well known commodity I mean he's a guy that turned pro with real Madrid which is you know on the highest profile not just soccer teams of basketball teams in the world and everyone knew about him you know Dirk we were lucky enough to literally trade down from seven to nine pick up Nash in that same transaction and that's the way their career started together with Luka I I remember was like use yesterday because we had you know before the ping pong balls that we had the third deck with then we had some bad luck we got kicked out of the fifth pick and I saw my life flash before my eyes I just like there's no way this kids going to get down to five he's going to be one or two but just as luck would have it in the draft last year we were able to trade from five to three get Luka I'm sure two years ago and then last year was his rookie year which as you guys know the border I don't care your new dark local whatever Luka had plenty of time to be able to carve out a really nice year eventually rookie of the year we had the conversation with him last year that the off season it's extremely important that's when you become a pro and he had a very rigorous offseason work actually slower slovinia had spent some time you really transform his body and he had he at training camp this year loaded for Bach and so far he's been really quick out of the gate study Nelson journals the workers and the Mavericks from Dallas tonight by the way the only bad thing they came out of the dark and Nash trade was that opening picture that you had where Nash had that hair that was the only bad thing about the trade it was the worst of all time you had Nelly in the middle and you had Dirk who's a natural blonde and then you had Nash that was a wanna be blonde and that was one of the worst zoos in the in the history of the NBA absolutely awful to work fixer ever of what we eat you mention what look it did in the off season specifically what what is he better at what do the improve on you know the thing that really got us excited about Luka and a lot of what he has is just part of the natural DNA it is very like Jason Kidd who you know was a maverick is you know we stars and once championship Nash the other great players they make everyone around them better in its ability to pass he built he makes better are the thing that my opinion that makes him unique and special there's guys that are shooters there's guys that are better a a lot of different areas but his ability to may call his teammates better find guys put the ball the money create with this size is the thing that really makes him unique that being said he's also got that Eugene where he loves the pressure and he loves the big moments and he wants to take the big shot so you kind of put all that stuff together and it's hard to believe at the tender age of twenty you know he's having you know this kind of success this early in his career against the greatest you know players on the planet earth but it's happening yeah I want to go back to you know in your heart was racing and you guys drive down to five and you think you're not going to get him because you pulled off a really interesting transaction with a guy that we know well here in the bay area Travis Schlenk was Bob's assistant GM for years ago to the hawks in you know tray on is gonna be a really good player but if you can share some of your conversations were Travis or how that all went down because when you look back on it you know saintly trading Vance Carter French wine Jamison was a great draft night trade you mention the one you got a we got Derek and and Steve Nash for tractor trailer but this was met and they did both these guys may wind up in the hall of fame and they figure to be a perennial all stars but so just tell me about that transaction you maybe Travis well look we we he was high on our board to I mean we you know when we worked our fear was that neither one of those guys was going to be there at five and so we really really you know like look we paid a high price I mean look to go from five to three and give up what we gave up it was a lot and so but we kinda believe then the size and again his bill would be to create and look I think that was a that was a classic win win radios you know just a study is going to be one of the great players ever play that position Ross was we we want to go with a little bit we'll call a point guard and the other reason behind both franchises but Travis is a friend as you guys know we started career under a guy I'm fairly familiar with you know Nelly and so we share the commonality of you know the Golden State fraternity gene and so it but it the the trade didn't actually consummate until really minutes before dish the start of the draft which it's not uncommon because you know guys hold their cards close to the vest in Travis is one of the best card players that's out there and he's going to be any studies already created an incredible team out there in Atlanta Donny is it is an interesting is is I look at your roster that as we were talking about you want earth foreign players years ago you have that with the mavs you of a Tim Hardaway and your team of course junior you have Seth curry Steph curry after all those those years you still have these warriors connections interesting RJ what it's like a home coming you know we see to me come down here all the time senior and the fact we go back to reminisce about you know the back in the day and you know when when he garlands son is the it you know let's start out there and Cleveland and you know there's these you know sons of that's it well all over the place and so yeah it's gold state warriors gene and low and certainly you know my ten year history there is develop relationships really that that span beyond basketball yeah because your dad and you are good people and.

"So Jaanus in person on Saturday. In this rarely happens with MBA stars. It's like a final level. I'm not even positive happened with her. It might have. But I'm not positive yada says reached a point that when he's in your town. You have to go. He's half to you have to go. See the dude in person, and it is like the final level of MBA stardom where not only that you have to go to Milwaukee, you have to go to Milwaukee. God. When was the last time we said that I've just never seen a player like him. I've never seen a player of his skill set. He is an absolute one of a kind. I mean, he the weird thing about him is he's not even a finished product yet. I don't even think I think he might be two years away from being as good as he's ever going to be he doesn't he can't really shoot. It's that the ball almost looks like a golf on his hands and his fingers are just too big. And he's just figured out how to get layups and dunks and runners and little follow as offense rebounds and put backs in alley. Oops, and he can get to thirty points. Without really having a kind of a Goto shot. I've never seen anything like it. He's the first non center I've ever seen in my life. Who's a guaranteed thirty? But isn't really a score eight points tonight in the paint. Yeah. In any plays, really, really hard. That said that's one of the things I love about him. And I love about Zion. He's diving for balls, he's balls out the whole time. He never dogs it he's in phenomenal shape. He's doing trying to chase down box at every every fast break and the stuff that he does with with the steps with his ability to go from the three point line to the basket in two steps in the euro steps and his footwork. He's just incredible. And I can't say enough about what it's like to you can't put a price enough to go. See him in person. There's don. The only reason in Dallas now that five years later people could finally start to pretend to come to grips with the fact that Donnie Nelson was begging the mass to draft this guy, and they did they could click about Janas five six. You know, I did drafter that that wasn't a slam dunk by any means nobody they're allowed to there are a lot of possible red flags with that one. Thank you grainy film from three just. Just like how rough has background was in Greece. And just a thought of like just getting him into America and putting him here and putting him in the NBA like what kind of a light? Great. I actually Milwaukee is actually I love going there as a physical can't sit here and say that I would move there. But I don't mind dropping in even in the dead of winter. Visit there I love how much love Milwaukee. I really hope say I think it's a great story that he's fallen in love with with Milwaukee..

"Heart Robert Pack and air stricklin as the guards Steve Nash coming off the bench as well as sets abolish also come after bench Nowitzki playing center guess Michael Finley and then your fifth starter who had sixteen rebounds at night and played forty minutes. Dennis rodman. Dennis rodman. How many teams pay for them be long? If twelve games of my beat writing life. God Dallas didn't even remember forty. He put forty minutes at a game for the barracks. No recollection of this used to shower before games. But not after what it what it do what a. Hater. I wonder what's hold that thought about Dirk in the Taoist pantheon 'cause I wanna come back to that. Because that's a great conversation. The Donncha gin gin in June. So Dallas wins the title in two thousand eleven dirt gets his belated recognition as one of the greats. And now, I think he's one of the keys in the top sixteen fi. If I made my top twenty list, he's somewhere sixteen seventeen at the past Malone. I think you pass Barclay. I think he might have even past Julius Erving. But then the next five six years frustrating. Try the, you know, going back to Tyson Chandler, leaving the next eight not just party, I guess next. They were never able to really properly defend the title it became clear about four years ago that they were just complete completely wasting Dirks post prime. They took a lot of swings. Rondo come comes in and out through there and made some big signings. West bath is coming off an achilles that didn't work. They really paid for Harrison Barnes who I actually will not a bad thing. Harrison Barnes on your team. You just don't pay him twenty four million. They went through the Deandra Jordan car wash in came out covered in a soap. Then finally get him this year. Probably a couple years too late everything they did just either didn't work or they had bad luck or poor vision, or whatever you want to say. And then this dancers thing makes up for it. I did they know immediately that that was going to be a transformative trader where they just hoping. I think they they can't say that they knew for sure, but look Donnie Nelson. You know, he's Donnie Nelson player. Donnie, Nelson is the one Don Nelson will admit Donnie, Nelson is the one who found her who pushed for Nash. And this is, you know, Cuban I told him the other day won the lottery again, like he, you know, now the Mavs finally have a poster future. Yeah. And and in this this one guy is is, you know? You need three great players at the to really compete for championships. I think we all know that in an agree with that. So there's still miles from that. But if this really is Dirk last year, no matter what happens to matter who else is on that roster. You've got Donncha, which you've got a piece that your fans are going to be excited about who's gonna keep the building full someone who Durkan actually hand the torch to I mean, they gave up a lot for him and everybody wants to crush the hawks. And I know you've been you've been at the front of that line. But you know, let's see what they get with other pick Dallas sent them. I mean, so. Oh, it's hot the man lot. No, I'm not..

"I say this last chance, no put off, of course that uses bad, but they still can't seem to navigate their way into a playoff spot draft porzingas when no one else likes them granted and I do that. They dress. He's he's jobs campus along that contract gave to Hardaway junior though is really bad because he was not. He was getting Hardaway seeing. He should've got both for that deal for the price. Steve mills. He's an interesting person to keep an eye on. I don't know. Do you have another one that is interesting to you in terms of possible hot seat? Well, maybe the bulls gar Forman. Yeah. Just because he's kind of it's the bowls. They need a win right there to can't. Just if you're the bulls, I would always put Sean marks the nets up there too. He's the guy that treated for Howard than immediately released him. Yeah, I'm not even kidding. Yeah, but that was for that. That was too for a cap move. Right. I mean, that was too. Did it makes it didn't make sense, then doesn't make sense. Now, I can't remember that today by him out and get a draft pick out of it or something. Just all it says on resumes acquired in then released white Howard. So, yeah, the the nets working for quite some time with that disastrous trade him at Boston or they didn't have. They were finishing as one of the worst teams. They weren't getting any benefits of it, like having top picks. So. You think Sean marks might be the sacrificial lamb. Things go, south again, could be a public execution. He's gonna go to eighteen. Well, lot going, I. If anyone's going to get fired, it's should be body, but I don't think he's gonna get fired because of the Laura. I think he, he's the relationship. He has run a diva. He's basically they do puppet if everything run DA wants to happen flawed, does everything in his power to make sure he gets buddy healed or gets Mike staus kiss. So if you're betting right now. Give me your top three of these GM's that will likely be fired. I. Okay. August Steve mills, he's my number one. Dali Nelson. Okay. I'll go out with Steve mills. Second. It's this is a tough one for me. Actually, my third. Yeah, good. A lot of ego think he's revive's, but if it's a bad season, a terrible season, then he's fired. In my opinion. Yeah, he's he's not safe was put that way. Also also Donnie Nelson is up there because because he's been there for a long time, like he's been the GM for a while. Nothing is just one of those times where I can sports, like if you're GM or coach after a while, like it's time for the team to move on to make a change. So. It's not necessarily like an indictment on the on the person or sometimes coaches GM's. This need a new project. They need a new situation in the in the team does too. Right? So it's like mutually beneficial. So I'll say, Donnie Nelson's my number two mills, my one dining Nelson number two. Hard for me to save Wadi. I what about Dave will in the clippers. Yeah, I can see that too. I don't think they fire refrain was a big deal to me what have been. They fired Doc Rivers. So if somebody's head is going to roll, it's going to be his in my him. I'm gonna go divo- as kind of like my outside if they start off to if they get off to a bad start, some of these signings and player. New players don't work out. Then he could be gone on keeping my three though same again, former time say, oh, Donnie Nelson from the magic Mavericks, excuse me, buddy flawed was mine were three, my number to Steve mills. Gotcha. So I got mills, one, Donnie Nelson, and then Dave will as my outside choice. Anything else you want to mention about Ryan mcdonagh, the sons or any other? These GM's. A little too prematurely. I think he should've waited until the..
