"That both came on hard court, so this is very much obviously a clay court where I should be on tech is I would say definitely the favorite. We don't know so much about her on a clay court so far she hasn't proven herself in the way that she on tech has on the clay. But the fact that she's won both of her matches against you on tech without dropping a set so far this year, that's got to count for something. So Chris, who are you predicting for this evening's match and obviously by the time this podcast goes out, it's probably been in bean and happened. But let's get your thoughts anyway, Chris, where are you thinking? Wow, I think I'm going to slightly contradict what Joel has said in terms of the nature of the court. I think because it is so slow and it does set up. It does give some of those players that might not be the quickest move is a bit more time on the ball to really strike the ball. So I actually think that part of the reason for we're back in a success, this time around, on the clay, is linked with that that it does give her the extra time. And it also thinks something that Medvedev said that was quite interesting was that he was surprised when he played against the Spaniard early on the week that they weren't playing in what he called the Spanish style of cross court cross court cross court. They were going more down the line. And I think we're back in a is kind of prone to being a cross court player. That's kind of what she's famous for in terms of where she directs. So I kind of feel like if she's waiting to take it on, which I think she will have to be, I think this could be really entertaining. And I do think she's going to have chances. I don't think it's going to be like a straight set ego win. I think there might be a very close set. And then there might be like a sort of a less closed one, but hopefully it will go three, but I am going to say eager because I mean, you can't really not. And if there is a time when ego is going to be, we're back into this year. In Rome right now. I mean, I don't think she played particularly great against Donna vekic, but even playing at 60%. She's still kind of came out of the 6 three 6 four victory. So if there are gears to go up there, I think it's got to be an ego shield text hands. I mean, eager xion tech has won 24 consecutive sets at this tournament and 14 straight matches. And I've predicted she's going to lose a set. So that's already pushing it. Just disappointed. We're not getting the schwinn tech sabalenka trilogy trilogy fight. Yes, because then it's been one each, isn't it? So far. Absolutely. I mean, Rebecca and I has beaten siobhan on the clay at a junior tournament in Milan in 2017. So that went three sets. We'll have to wait and see. The other quarter in their section has happened already today, oster penko beating Paolo bodos, who was on a good run here. So the winner of srivijaya Rebecca and I will be playing Yelena austa benko, who has been in decent home this week. A few bagel sets. She's got as well en route to the semi. And she's had a few arguments as well. With umpires over like calls to be expected. That's not a surprise. I can't remember. I can't remember the lady, the lady's name, but it's the really stern female umpire she check, I think, or something like that. And they should just have a sitcom together. Their dialog with each other is was borderline, I think, hilarious. During their match, I think it was osteen Cossack Kuna but don't quote me on that. But yeah, I think oster penko has looked very, very good. I still don't feel like you can look at the form book with oster Panko and you've got to take it one tournament at a time, but we know that she's a match at one man at a time. One set at a time, Chris. But you know, she's a French Open champion. And I genuinely think with this run, she has put together in Rome. 20th seed here, I think she is going to be one of those danger players to look out for when it comes to Paris. She's up to ten in the race as well. And if you look at the players that she's beaten her, I mean Christa just come off a challenger title. That was the first round. Kajikawa, she managed to bagel in that second set. She also begged Casa kino in the third set and now she's taken out parallel but so you have to say this is reminiscent of that French run in terms of some of the form that we're seeing and really backing herself in these tricky moments. So whoever does win out of eager and we're back in it, I do think it's not going to be a walk in the park in that semifinal. No, and on the other side, we've already got this semifinal line up between kalinina and coup de metaverse. A Kalani really battling to get there. She won the longest match of the year so far on the WTA Tour. Three hours and 43 minutes. And Sara saribas tour, I was not involved, which is the biggest match could have gone four hours up to the first couple of sets. I think there were two like two hours, 30 plus, and yeah, they both of them put their absolute heart and soul into that match. It was it was incredibly physical. I think had admire was in tears afterwards, given the amount of effort she had put into come up short, but yeah, calina seems to be doing the business at the moment. She obviously had that win over Ken in and then keys and how did my thought was on a good run here. I was actually putting her as the favorite, but calin has done well to come through. Do you think the winner of the tournament is going to come from the siobhan tech slash Rebecca slash ostapenko section? You'd have to say that, I think. But I do think Carolina in fairness to her. I do think that she is a great ball striker. I love watching her play when she's playing well because she does swing off both wings. I think she just kind of sometimes makes those errors. And I'm really hoping it's not code a matter of versus Sri Lanka because they have never had a contest and we might be looking at another double bagel in the final of Rome. Yes, of course because sriyantha famously double bagel place giver in the final here, I believe it was. Maybe it's written. Two years ago. Yeah, maybe, well, the bakery may be opening once more. Another branch. Let's have a very quick break now, but do join us in the second half, where we'll be discussing Emma raducan is split from U.S. open winning coach Andrew Richardson. There's been an article come out about that, which is why we're talking about that again. We'll be looking at one time major winners on the tour and also looking ahead to the rest of the action still to come in Rome. So do not go anywhere. Welcome back to tennis weekly sponsored by download tennis dot com and now we're going to move on to a bit of par for the courts. I think Joel, you've got one for me and Chris. I'm back to try and

"Out and fetch some from the supermarket. But Joel, what was your highlight of the last week? Let's move on from Kate. My highlight was in real life. And it was at the Rome masters and it was between a fleeting moment between stefanos sisa pass. And Daniel Medvedev, they were caught walking past each other on a bridge inside the venue and we all know that what should I say fractious? Relationship and they just did not look at each other. They just walked past each other, Daniel Medvedev, I think, gave like a fake wave over the bridge, so he almost didn't have to look at surpassing sort of making it up as he went along and yeah, it just gave a real fascinating insight I feel into their, well, into this into this non friendship and this rivalry that is going to be with us for time and time to come and these guys just do not get along with each other. It was pretty awkward, wasn't it? I think we've all been there where there's someone that you bought past that you don't particularly want to make eye contact with, but I mean they could have mustered a hello or a nod, but clearly it's very sound between the moment. It's very British. Colleagues on a train and just pretending they don't exist. And then you get off the train and then maybe you say hello to them in the office, but not in that moment. So maybe they were in the zone. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt. They were in the zone. They were preparing for their practice of their matches, or maybe they didn't see each other. I mean, it's provided a perfect build up, hopefully, to a match between them in Rome, which could be on the cards. They're both still in the tournament, but yeah, it feels very, very tense between them at the moment. So I want to see that bubble over on a tennis court that have to acknowledge themselves each other then. They'll do the hatching. Both look the other way, won't they? Wait for someone else. It's been quite a lot of bizarre things going on in Rome. I noticed that Donna vekic on Twitter put out, well, it was in a response to holger room street actually. About when she was actually playing, she didn't know that the schedule, and she went to bed, not knowing which how awful is that as a tennis player. You're trying to plan your day. And you don't know, you don't know when you're playing, when do you get up? When do you practice, you know, that's just, that's not on. What was going on with the scheduling there? I mean, I guess you can't out the weather, but still. Yeah, I know. This wasn't great. I mean, that has plagued, I feel roamed this week. It's made the court so slow also so much moisture in the air. I feel like we've had so many three hour plus matches, but I've never seen a player have to call out on social media. Let me know by schedule, but yeah, it's been a little bit of a it's been a little bit tough going for tournament directors over the last couple of masters events. It feels like. Yeah, and I saw some very odd decision making in terms of that masetti, tier four match, where they kind of took them off eventually. And then they brought them back almost back onto course. So I just prepare the court again, and then they didn't play. So I think maybe Donna was in a similar situation with the weather where she's like, maybe holger gets a better information than she does. So let's look at what's happened in Rome so far and we've had a couple of surprises. I think the first of which was, well, one of the biggest upsets of the year, or of some people. Upset the century, I know. And that was Carlos alcaraz. Losing to someone, I think most of us have never heard of a player from Hungary, who's outside the top hundred, 23 years of age, Hungarian, Fabian mirjan, and yeah, straight sets as well. 6 three 7 6. I was not expecting this hasn't lost to someone outside the top hundred for months and months and has been racking up titles lately. So this was a big big surprise. Joel, you're not in your head avidly, as I've been speaking, what did you make of this performance? Well, from both players, this absolute upset. Yeah, it was a big, a big surprise took me off guard. I think it made me put in perspective all the hype that has been around Carlos alcaraz, particularly in the build ups of the French Open, and I'd say, you know, at tennis week, the headquarters arguably, some of our lists will be saying we've been guilty of it as well, and we've been digging up him up as this big favorite for the French Open. And smack this result comes along and it just puts everything in perspective to me and I think marathon on the day he just played a fantastic match. He was playing some unbelievable drop shots. He was matching toe to toe with alcaraz from the back of the core and I don't necessarily think there are any kind of mitigating factors. I don't think there were any kind of injury doubts with alcaraz or anything else. I just think marzan on his day just played an unbelievable level and alcaraz just didn't have any answers to it. I think he said he felt he was made to feel uncomfortable by the way marzan was hitting on the court and he just didn't have an answer to it. So yeah, I certainly would put this in the category of marathon just went out there and won it as opposed to alcaraz losing it and I'm all for it to be honest because I think it now just creates even more uncertainty I think when it comes to the French Open in a few weeks. And Chris, I mean, outcross did say, though, that afterwards, you know, he hasn't really had much chance to practice because he's been playing so much. So do you think in element of it was just tiredness? We saw with sabalenka, how tied she's been, she's been playing an awful lot tennis as well. Do you think actually this will do alcohol as the world of good having lost a bit earlier to get that extra rest ahead of the French? Yeah, and I think it's not necessarily bad though, you know, having a match that he didn't necessarily pay your best in. I think sometimes that is kind of a wake-up call that you need to provide that extra motivation because he kind of was winning a lot of things and it wasn't coming very hard to him. He was doing it quite simply. So I think it is a bit of a reality check, not just for us and tennis pundits ever. I think also in terms of for him and sense checker where his form is that never underestimate an opponent because as Joel said on the day, he made the alcaraz served that we've been talking so much about being so impressive. Look pretty average in terms of being able to win so many points against the first and second server. I mean, he won 35% of points against his first serve and 55 against the second. So that's something that's super impressive and when it comes to the results we've seen, it's been 19 months since he's lost to someone outside the top hundred and he's only 20. So he doesn't lose to players who were right below him. So I think it is the router check he needs and I'm looking forward to seeing if this gives him a renewed sense of focus when it comes to playing those early rounds in Paris. Where does this put you in relation to the French Open and Carlos alcaraz? The fact that we were sort of digging him up as the favorite is he still the favorite or where do you see this given this result? I think along with Djokovic, they're still the top favorites. I mean, I'm basing that on the fact that I think refer will probably be pulling out, which we'll get on to later. So I don't actually think this is going to be, I don't think it's actually going to change how I feel about our crust going into the French because I do think this isn't best to 5. He probably could do with a bit of a rest and it's probably better to get the loss out of the way now for him. Going with a bit less pressure. I think you guys were talking about that a bit last week anyway. But

"Yeah, I really like this press conference from Fritz. He's a slightly, he's a slight contrast, always think Fritz. I think he has a lot of self confidence, not belief in himself. But I always find him quite he's quite shy, I think. He's quite shy and press conferences. I thought he was quite shy at the Eisenhower trophy cup. One of the two yeah, one of them is the one's fire. Murray. I felt like he was quite shy there as well. And sabalenka was bringing out some personality, but he was quite happy just sort of raining it in a little bit. Anyway, but he does, there's a lot of belief in his own game, I think, and he laid out his goals for the year, which was to finish the season in the top 5 and reach a final at least of a slam. Which, you know, a big goals and ones that I do believe he's capable of, but he knows that he needs to start performing in slams because he hasn't been showing up in those events. But I think the most the most revealing part of the press conference was everything he had to say about Acapulco and the sort of trauma that he went through there. Horror, really. Matt Roberts made him revisit it. Yes, I made him recount in detail, his full body cramps. Well, I didn't make him. He was not he offered it up. Not shy about telling us exactly what that's like. And it was horrendous. Yeah. Couldn't keep any food down, kept throwing up, body cramps, full body cramps throughout the night. Four hours. For several hours. He needed to tune out now if you're eating, but he needed to rehydrate, but then every time he said he couldn't go on an IV because of anti doping rules restricted that. Now, I need to look into that whether it can't be as simple as you can't have an IV, but anyway, obviously in this instance, he felt he couldn't have an IV. So he needed to take fluids on board to hydrate himself, but he couldn't keep them down, so he'd been just a vicious cycle for what would he say three four hours? Yeah. And you were trying to ask him, I think, Catherine, whether he regretted it at all, regretted not withdrawing, not quitting the match, given what it ended up being like. And he said he's only ever done that once, and that was in Washington when he said I was seeing double. This gets down Evans, was it? Yeah, and Dan Evans was a badge of honor that he outlasted. Taylor Fritz, he loved that match. And Fritz said that he made a promise to his team that if he ever felt like that again, he would withdraw. And that was when he felt like that again, so he did pull out. He didn't say that he had made any promises to his team that if he gets full body cramps, he will be pulling out retiring. His line, I think, is such that he just feels like he needs to give everything. And you'll have to carry me off. Literally. And that is such an, you know, we've talked about it in the last couple of weeks. That is section interesting framing, whether that's a good or bad thing. And I just think stubbornness generally is an interesting trait in sport. It can be, it can be a huge positive, and it is for him because his competitive instincts and he probably makes more of his game than what it is, really, because of what a great competitor he is. But at the same time, it can cost you. And he said he doesn't think that the Acapulco experience is going to cost him here. He does feel fully recovered and he's fine. But it could. If you push yourself too far, it can have lasting implications. Yeah. Look out for yourself, Taylor. That's it for your immediate day roundup. We do have a few other things to round up for you though, including the results that we promise to bring you from Sunday's finals that we weren't able to cover in Sunday's podcast, including victory for Donna vekic. And David lore. I was going to say it, David, you didn't even give me. I thought you were going to go with Pam before yourself. Only points so good. Heck of a win. Yeah, Donna. And Pam and David. Yeah. It was a fantastic performance. And brilliant final too. Oh, and I've been meaning to ask you this whole time, David, did you watch the final live? Because you promised to go to bed. And I think texting is, if you want. You went quiet, quite early on Sunday Night. Yeah, because basically my plane was taking off at 6 25 a.m., which meant a 3 a.m. alarm call, and the final was due to take place at an 11 p.m. star. Yeah, 11 p.m.. So I finished my packing at about ten 40. Let's say that around that. And I'm about to go to bed, and I'd been watching something that evening, I can't remember what it was. The golf, I'd been watching the golf, that was it. And the golf finished or at least got to a point where I know who's going to win, so okay. And then I just sort of, I just want to see if they're on court yet. And so I watched the knock up, and then I got ready for bed and I was and then I thought I'll keep it on while I'm just getting ready for bed. I just watched the first set. So I watched the first set, and then I went to sleep, right? And then I'd set my thought, if I sit my alarm clock, half an hour early, and just press pause now on the app. We are such different people. I'll just be able to pick it up while I'm getting ready to get in my last getting my breakfast and getting everything ready. And I did. The numbers don't add up here. The gap between going to sleep and setting the alarm isn't long enough to get to school. No, I had four hours sleep, right? I had four sleep, and then what and the problem was, Donna vekic, playing brilliantly, wins the first set, and then goes to love up in the second. So I'm thinking, oh, this is easy. I'll easily get this in before the taxicabs. And then the comeback started and Caroline Garcia got 5 games in a row. She played amazing stuff. This really was a superb final. And then the third set was just classic championship match, final set stuff, where both players are pushing each other to the absolute limit. Garcia was the better player for much of that deciding set. I mean, I did feel like vekic was the better player on the whole overall over the course of the match, but she was getting the chances cars here in the design is set, but vec is just would not let her have it and she has I mean, I think it was power move really drew my attention to the capability of vicious serve. I don't think I'd ever really grasped how potent that serve is when it works. And she was just no matter how many break points she faced down. She was just able to see them off with a good first server or a good combination. And this grit there as well. She just showed such heart and stayed with Garcia until that 12th game and then broke. It was a brilliant brilliant match. Do you give her a chance here, Becky? I would say no. I just think there are so many good players playing at the probably at the top of the games. There are better players in this drawer than non a wreckage. Yugoslavia, arena sabalenka, bob or a critique of it. I'm not exactly sure what wreckage is drawn. Third round. I mean, look, I think she's capable of beating sabalenka. I mean, she's beaten as several times before when we came to that match in the Australian open eye.

"I think it's probably quite positive as a reminder that these tensions and what's going on is still very much real over a year into the war. So I actually think it was very well handled and not so much like a drama headline, but I actually do think it's quite a pertinent and impactful way of expressing it because they still competed. No one was denied the ability to compete, but there were boundaries that were drawn and attention was raised in a positive way. And another final we had, which I think was very well competed very well contested. Donna vekic versus Caroline Garcia, I thought they'd both brought very high levels of tennis to the court, big serving from both sides, but Dona vekic coming through 7 5 in the third set in Monterey against Garcia. Garcia is now from two in finals this season. Hasn't necessarily set the world alight like she did, I think, at the back end of last season, but it's still doing very well, but it's hard not to feel really happy for someone like Donna vekic, given the injuries that she's been through, you know, where she was seeing her ranking, unfortunately kind of tumble down. And then, yeah, this season, well, to be honest, since the back end of last season, it's all really changed for her with Pam shriver coming on board, Australian open, quarterfinal, and it's just great to see her get back. Well, personally, for me, get back to where she belongs. Yeah, she's, I mean, such a talented player and she's someone who has had some really incredible results, especially from a very, very young age. The first final she made was, I think it was in Uzbekistan in 2012. So this is 11 years into her career and she still, I think she's 26. So it just shows how much how much ability to and it feels like she's been around for a very long time. And some of the best matches I've seen actually have featured, I think, the match against Johanna konta. Nottingham, and then the Wimbledon match. I think it was both of those contests were kind of some of the finest examples of women's tennis and grass court tennis and I'm getting goosebumps, just thinking about specifically that Conte vetch match at Wimbledon, because yeah, that was a very, very, very good match where all competitors brought it. Yeah, and it was what a great example of women's tennis. And the match in Nottingham that preceded that where she took the title, that was another great one, but and then I think what's great about Beckett is that even when she has been going through some pretty tough times to meet she picked up a title in Italy in 2021 as well. So she's even when she's struggling, she's still able to kind of put the results together. So to have them so consistent at the start of this year, I think is great because she's someone who can really cause some damage and when you look at the game that she has and while she plays off both wings, how strong the serve could be, especially in those Wimbledon matches. She's someone who has all the attributes that you would want from a top player and it's something that this was also interesting because if one of the results earlier in the tournament forehead gone a little bit differently I mean she was not necessarily doing that well in her first round match and we talked about this with Rublev who obviously made the final she was actually a set a set down when she went through because of her retirement from sirens. So it just shows you that all some of these top players need is just that in and then they're able to do something pretty great. I would say job a question I have for you on Garcia so what's the difference this year from when she was picking up the titles last year? And I think she might argue playing better this year, but she isn't getting it done. Has everyone else put a target on her back if they raise their game or actually has she let her level drop a little bit? I think for me, there's an expectation now from what to expect from Caroline Garcia given her rise up the rankings and how well she was playing at the end of last year. So I wonder if that pressure is maybe affecting her a little bit because we've seen the two finals she has made here and in Leon I don't think she's she obviously hasn't got the victory. And I think she's she's gone in as the favorite each time. So I do wonder if there's a little bit of extra pressure that she's sort of getting new suit. I don't think it's like the wheels have come off completely. I still think she's playing a very good level of tennis and I genuinely think that final was one of the better finals we've seen so far on the WTA Tour this season. But it's just coming to those clutch moments that aren't necessarily kind of falling her way. Well, having said that Joe though, there was in this one, I thought Beckett did play very, very well. And it was almost very impressive how Garcia was able to stay with her in that third set. I think she was love 40 down on serve and got the hold. So in those moments previous I guess, if you look at Garcia from maybe two or three years ago, she wouldn't, she would have been broken, you know? She wouldn't have got the hold or have the mental resolve in those situations. So I'm glad you're not counting her out yet because Kim might be listening. I was just channeling what I genuinely when you ask me that question, I was just actually channeling what would Kim say? What would Kim say from the rooftop and Palmer? Hugo in hand, exactly. Yes. But I do think, yeah, I mean vekic is very good, I think just not being again like that Belinda bench type mentality of not getting flustered and playing under pressure and not being intimidated and maybe some of the opponents at Caroline Garcia comes up against they just don't feel they've got to do well I think to not be intimidated by that big serve aces that might just kind of fly past them. But yeah, I think it's still coming together. I just think just a few tweaks, I think that she'll need to address in her game to get her back to firing from the end of last season. Where do you think vecchio will be ranked by the end of the year if you had to say Joel? That is a good that is a very good question.

"As though he maybe could use this tournament as the evidence that he is going to be at his best as a counter puncher and not trying to knock people off the court, which is kind of what he intimated in that question Christian I asked him at the press conference in the Australian open preview about where he just said I've got to take it to them. And I know what he means. But I also remember Leighton Hewitt talking like that. And Hewitt was at his best as a counter puncher. Bring them onto you. Soak it up, make them make them frustrated that they can't knock you off the court, and then pick them off. And I only watched highlights of the final. I watched about ten minute highlight film, but Tommy Paul was having to win rallies several times and I just feel as though that's what one did all the match in the end. For anybody that is hanging for a berrettini brother results news from Acapulco this week, Matteo only lasted one round more than jacopo. Jacopo, I think is not very good. Mateo is potentially cursed. That is, that is my assessment situation. Jacopo did get I'm being mean there. He did get his first ever ATP tour level win. By retirement of Oscar otter and then one game in the next round. Matteo had to retire in his third round match. Or even second round match actually because he wouldn't have got to buy in the first round would he curse to play a theory for Mateo tini is the evidence is mounting. I think oh yeah, I mean he might have been he might have been the player who started the cursed player theory. I mean the number of injuries and big matches that he's had to retire from or withdraw before the event it's mounting up and I actually read that Milos raonic is making a comeback and it made me realize that he might be a curse player as well and baritone brownish similar frames. I mean, brown edges it's got an even bigger frame I would say than bear a tini, but maybe there's something in that in terms because around it should always injured as well and I don't know I can I can definitely see maybe a little pattern there. A melos around which come back, okay, that's something something I was on. Sorry to spring that on you. What a bombshell to drop. Right. I've just seen it, we are going to talk about the quickly about the three tournaments that haven't quite finished it, but I've just seen it a tweet from Stefano sits about us. Which obviously is ludicrous yet, but I'm just going to read it out. He says, training under the blazing Dubai sun feels like being on fire. But nothing beats the satisfaction of dunking into a cold ice bath at the end of the day is the ultimate cooldown and the closest thing to heaven on earth. He thinks an ice bath folks is the closest thing to heaven on earth. I know they live quite limited lives, tennis players, but come on. Why didn't why didn't you life experience? Most of the chocolate cake before you. Yeah, just so beer or something, Steph. Anyway, right. Moving on to, well, in actually no, sticking with Acapulco for just a minute Alexander earlier and Lucas Midler of Austria won the doubles title there in Santiago, the ADB two 50 event happening there. The final is Nicholas Gerry playing at home, of course, against Thomas Martin etch a very in Monterey and Austin, we've had WTA to 50 events this week. Now the final in Monterey is Donna vekic against Caroline Garcia and we were referencing this earlier on because David has skin in the game. Yeah, yeah, I've watched every pool. If Donna vekic quest for the title so far. And it's been really fun, hasn't it? I know we have a particular interest and we've been getting insights from Pam shriver. Her super coach ahead of and after matches which have really enhanced our enjoyment of watching their matches this week because we kind of we know what the strategy is going to be from Pam. But even so it's been a really fun watch watching Donna vekic find different ways to win matches this week against different types of opponent. Yeah, and actually I think it's the microcosm of taking an interest in a player and actually watching all of her matches all the way through a relatively small event in Monterey like this where she gets a buy first round, she plays. I think it was a buy, or she certainly played less of a Sorrento who'd had matches coming in and lost the first set 6 two. I know that pan was concerned about her playing against a player who had got matches under a belt and are you gonna get the tide to turn it around, then she goes 5 low up in the second set and then sirenko retires. And so that in itself is a little bit of a kind of saga, isn't it? And then it was straightforward next round and the third one was an absolute epic against a player. I barely seen a match of before and yet she's absolutely hitting the living daylights out of the ball whenever she's loved 40 down and comes through that and then beats who was it she beat last night. That was it. And so all very, very different matches and here she finds herself in the final against scarlet Garcia. The backhand drop shot, the wreckage backhand drop shot is back Matt. Yes. Pam really encouraging me to make a backhand drop shot list and for vekic to be on it. It was definitely something we noticed through the Australian output, wasn't it, how well she was hitting that shot. And I think you need that with her game style. You need that little bit of variety. It's so great that she has it. And Pam also told us that Beckett's preparation had really been sub optimal for this event because they were meant to have a training block in California and it just rained the whole time. So she went into this event really rusty and she's shaking that off and is in the final. She's still only lost to saccharin and sabalenka all year. She's one 20 of her 24 matches since linking up with Pam in San Diego last year. It's going to be good. That's Pam. It's going really, really well. And tough ask against Caroline Garcia, who is who is bringing her aggressive game style to every match and it's coming off this week. Double the number of winners to unforced errors against mertens in the semis. She's beaten a lot of good players this week, Garcia, and yeah, it feels like two power players meeting each other in that final and who's going to be able to sort of gain the advantage, but actually something like the vehicle drop shot might be could be a sort of difference maker, I suppose. So yeah, really excited for that final. Yeah, we'll be watching it and we will round it up for you in our next pod from Indian Wells as we will with the Austin final which is vivara gracheva against mata costy. That's a first WTA final for both those players, astonishing to me that cost duke hadn't reached a WTA final. I was really surprised by that stat, but then I'm also always surprised by how young she is in my head she sort of mid 20s, but of course she burst on the scene so young and lovely scenes Catherine when she beat Daniel Collins. She was so overwhelmed to be in her first final that Daniel Collins looked as if she was sort of laughing kind of a little bit

"In Monterey, Caroline Garcia and Marie bush cover at the top two seeds and David has picked Donna vekic. To win the title. Going to keep picking her until she dies. She's your power but also comes there. Yay. Go Pam. And as we mentioned last week, just confirmation that Novak Djokovic now has a total of 378 weeks at world number one and counting, that means he has officially now overtaken Steffi Graf on 377 weeks. We talked about it a bit last week. It is an incredible record and it's one that's still going. Who knows how many weeks he will end up racking up. It's incredible and congratulations to him. We have our mascot for this episode. I'm looking at him right now, his name is crossley. He's owned by Catherine, same church different pew, no, different church. Catherine with a cave anymore. They're in the same church. Side of the aisle? Anyway, kit wolverton. But crossley was brought to us and submitted by Amy susskind. Amy says submitting this in honor of my childhood friend kit, who lives in Arlington, Virginia, she, along with her twin, a responsible for my tennis addiction, when inviting me to join them as a ball kid at the Cincinnati tournament in the late 80s and early 90s, kiss and I kit and I have had many tennis adventures together including our semester abroad where kit came up from Paris to queue overnight with me for Wimbledon. My favorite day was kit having a massive crush on one of the older ball boys Brad. Are all crushes called Brad, I think they might be. Who thought of kit as a little sister that is unfortunate? Something that annoyed her to know and very relatable kit. Years later, they run into each other in Washington, D.C.. Oh my goodness, what this is, wow. Years later, they run into each other in Washington, D.C., and have now been married for over 15 years. Oh, I'm gonna do a little cry. Their son mason was named after where they first met. Someone make a movie out of that. That was amazing. I'm so grateful to kit for introducing me to this crazy and wonderful tennis world. Oh, I love that. And I love crossley crossley looks to me. Like a possibly elaborate doodle. I definitely think there's some doodle in there. It's difficult to get a sense of scale from the photo. It is sober army mustache. Big mustache, but that could just be the haircut, David. Billie Jean could have a big mustache if I styled her as such. Oh please. Anyway, there'll be a picture of crossley in our newsletter. So if you would like to submit your suggestions of what breed he might be, then please do, let us know. And thank you, Amy, for that wonderful, wonderful story that is warmed my cockles. Much loveliness. So thank you for that. We have our mascots, David has Maisie. I've got zenya and Matt has Darwin. Billie Jean, who's been asleep on my laptop throughout this recording, which is a very sort of early days tennis podcast recording energy, isn't it? It's very as Matt said, it's very U.S. open David 2016 vibes. Falling asleep on the keyboard. Billie Jean is sponsored by Billie Jean King and ilana kloss. We have our top folks and executive producers Jamie Hannah and drew and we have shoutouts, Matt. We have Dana Douglas in allendale, New Jersey. Oh, hello. Great day. Don't know any tennis players. Great location. Is Alan Dale New Jersey where Bruce Springsteen's concerts during the U.S. open are. No. Not that we're looking that far ahead. I think Alan Dale is quite small. No, okay. Okay. Well, there's somewhere in New Jersey that I hadn't heard of. Is it new rather than a friend? Rutherford, right? Like Greg Rutherford. And I'm afraid we're going to have to keep talking about New Jersey and come up with new things to say. We've got Noreen Riley in robinsville, New Jersey. LA nori, I think Noreen is our first ever Noreen shout out. I love it when we get a new name and sadly I don't know any tennis player Noreen's either, so Noreen you are a true one off. Noreen, thank you Dana as well. I feel like I didn't do justice there ended up talking about Greg Rutherford. Thank you to you both. And finally, we've got Kate Fisher Burrell who is originally from New Mexico, but now lives just outside Frankfurt in Germany. Oh. My brother spent a year living in New Mexico. And the only member of my family that has never been to New Mexico. There you go, fun fact. Sort that out. Kate, thanks, thanks a lot for being a friend. Frankfurt airport. Yeah, me too. You'll be there next week, when you David. Frankfurt. Next Monday. Yes, Frankfurt used to host the ATP finals. Back in the early 90s. In fact, it was where the masters, as it was known, moved from New York to Germany to take advantage of the Boris Becker days. And it was brilliant, amazing atmosphere. Thank you Kate for giving David to talk about the 90s. And Kate has a fun fact. She says, I have something in common with virtua Federer. I have two sets of twins. Wow. So cool. You, Roger Federer and Nicholas pifa. Oh, really? Oh. Yes. And I know that. No, I thought I had another example, but I can't remember. No, it's Federer's Federer's sister also has twins, right? But not two sets. I think that's, I think that's correct. Is that right? I think so. Gosh, that is a lot of twins, isn't it? Lovely. Excellent, great shout outs. Thank you, gate. We'll be back with another tennis podcast. We'll be recording on Sunday if this week because whilst the from the airport lounge recording was successful last time around, sort of front of how successful behind the scenes it led to quite a stressful boarding situation for me and Matt. So this time we're going to play it safe. And record on Sunday right before we head to Indy miles, so the first time as a team, courtesy of on location, the premium

"And you took her out. So your whole team has to feel good about that because that is sort of a testament to the work, because obviously they have coach players and during long stretches where you're injured, you believe you're doing the right thing, but you never know until you say, all right, let's go back on the court. And he said, well, what did it work? Or did we not make any progress? And I'm sure everyone has to feel like you made progress. So I had to feel to play political this year. The first time this year, in avenge all of what happened in 2021. Yeah, especially because last year, I played her in my first tournament back after my surgery at French. It was a close match, then she absolutely killed me at Wimbledon, but she was playing amazing. And then I lost to her 7.6 in the third and in Montreal, and I was like, okay, I have just never want to see her again. Encore, encourage. So when I actually, you know, when I realized I'm playing her here, I had a good feeling for once. And I was like, you know what? I'm just going to believe that I can beat her this time. And I'm just going to go for my shots. And it's actually what I've been doing more since the last two tournaments in talent and here just being more like, well, whatever. I'm going to go for it. If it goes in, it goes in, if not, we move on. But it's been going in. And yeah, that worked out really well. And I'm really happy with that when it feels really good that I'm sure for the whole team as well. Oh, yeah. I mean, you know, training and working out could be like, yeah, monotonous, right? You're trying to change scenery sometimes. Okay, let's work out in Croatia. Let's change the scenery because it's getting a little boring.

You should want to pay me. So that I can keep going. So tell me how you got into that business. Candles have always been a great passion of mine. And so has sent and fragrances. And I wanted to kind of go in the direction of interior design as well. That's why I mean, I don't know about you, but I like the package a lot. And I've seen it. It's hoping to show up in like wrapped in a FedEx box one day. Maybe. Maybe one day. So yeah, we came out with it last year, and it was my idea, but obviously there's a whole team working behind it. We're definitely wouldn't be able to do it all of that on my own. So it's great. And it's definitely something I want to focus on after my career. Fragrances from Croatia or are they American? Because, you know, when we travel, certain countries have a different sort of scent, like the hotel perfume, everything kind of smells different. So where did the fragrances come from? The fragrances are from France from grass. But the beeswax is from Croatia. There are a 100% Croatian vs. And actually beeswax is really healthy. It purifies the air. It's actually good for you. Many people don't know. Paraffin vaccine is very unhealthy and especially for pets, but then as well for humans. And actually just received a candle the other day, I don't want to say from who, but if you look on the background, it says, don't keep near pets or babies. And yeah, I would not want to have that around me. So my candles are definitely good for you.

"I think my results were good so it was a it was not my environment but I i'm not a big nightlife. But i like to go out for dinners. Go out for a walk in the city. Like i told you so amazed with chicago. It's uh i think. Probably i would say nicer city in america I i really. I've been here for a couple of days. And i really enjoyed it and i hope i will stay long so i feel like this is kind of the city i could thrive in. I got a long list of restaurants is going to text you and say you gotta go here. Go here go here. So i have a question for you is that bring it on. Which which Environment would you say like for as a coach. You would like your plan. So i would say. Us open is hard to manage the traffic food poisoning restaurants. You know just super busy. I would say aus- alsi open is tough because you're by never gets adjusted and you're so far from home so like if you still have like family at home you end up being up all night when daytime. There's always sleepy. I know i'm not sleepy. Coach right all of the end. I sleep but like that one. I'm like always tire. I would say. Wimbledon is probably the most prestigious and the most serene but in terms of like off court. Stuff is easy to manage from a culture perspective. But i think it's a little sleepy. Let's say and i think french open is like the perfect. Mix okay to shop til you player. Hey if you get far. I'll go half with you on the birkin bag. You get like little incentives where you can say you know. Let's stay a long time we get to. We went to miscall. But we want to korean barbecue. We have five more restaurants. You've got to go to so we gotta keep winning so we can go to those five restaurants farris..

"One of the she ro her as one of the funniest wanted to that. Croatian legends donna. Beckett's welcome to the show. Thank you. This is probably the nicest introduction. I've ever got from the nicest person exactly your wine drinking you. Remember that time you went to vineyard i do. I do what about uh cocktails in hoping last year. Oh that was a secret in the ice skating. I know my drinking buddy but now you know we gotta clean it up for the camera. So the first question. I want to ask is pre kovic top twenty in the world and you were like rolling and one of the things that career like momentum. So what did you do during cove it. I know you will to cover. I was just kind of like getting rolling. spent three months in my hometown in croatia with my parents with my family so it was very strange the first couple of weeks i was going crazy but then you get used to everything and after that you know. When the tour started again there was no crowd which was really. It was horrible So that was just hoping by the end of last year the things we're going to go back to normal this year and now they're kind of our but they're still all restrictions and australia were staff and then i had me surgery so i i dunno i start to say the koi break affected that but i mean we'll never know it was my first big injury so you're on. The heart lockdown the semi like now. Thank god i wasn't. Yeah i was in the in the semi. I was down two weeks than anticipated. Stuck there. no windows food government cheese being delivered to your front door was in that one. That was that was tough stuff stuff but you know religion. King says champions adjusts to just with it so you mentioned going back to your home time being with your parents your dad and your mom are probably the nicest people in the world. They're like always there but you never hear them and you never see them. You see your dad with his blue jeans on and his white collared shirt in his blue sweater on top of his collared shirt gives you like the hug of your life. You would have sworn. I played with donna and like he was there every time you hugged from dad and mom so when i look at your parents i'm like there's no way they produced a top twenty five tennis play because most tennis parents are like foot on your neck kicking you in the pants like pushing you towards so how were they hit us parents. Because they don't seem like over the top. Well i thank you for again. Nice words but yet they they were always there throwing my career. They still are ha- not so much anymore because of the travel restrictions and all of that but they always supported me but they never pushed made i. My goal was to be top tennis player and they always guided me throughout my career. My life which things. I should do wish things i shouldn't do..

Because it's just one of the most beautiful countries i've ever been to and Really a great fan base. I feel like when you're playing. Their people are so respectful they appreciate tennis players and athletes so much and i think as players we really feel that from the fans i think we love playing in front of the crowd there and i always feel like i have a lot of great support and Yeah it's just a one of my favorite places to play with the climate as well. It's very similar to florida With the humidity. And i think so much of me when i'm over there. It reminds me of of being at home. So you are one of those people like when you were sort of ascending to where you are now when you're like fifty sixty and you weren't seeded people like please. Don't let me play danielle. "But i've always had a guy in florida because that'd be impossible to not have car public transportation there. Yeah so you're famous for your fashion. Hey come on what else what people say behind your back is that you can dress. She's guy like high fashion sense. What was your first big purchase. Know when you when you played on tour and you got your first big check and he may say your first couple million like you know what now. I'm going to go by that purse. That i probably shouldn't back. What was your first big purchase. I don't know i've had a few not gonna lie. I liked to have fun and be able to treat myself to things. But you know i think the biggest thing when i first started making money as i didn't want to lose it so i immediately knew i didn't get a financial advisor to help manage things so it could grow but I have treated myself to some nice things over the years. Some nice jewelry. And that's probably one of my favorite things to treat myself like nice diamonds. And i love diamonds. Diamonds girl's best friend. So i have quite the jewelry collection i would say. I've tried to kind of stay away from the jewelry stores just so that i don't myself in dangerous physician because it can be. It can be tougher girl and Yeah i like. I love fashion. Like i love getting a nice handbag and wearing a nice dress and getting dressed up and i mean that's like one of the fun things we get to do with the travel on being able to go out to nice restaurants and get to have all these experiences and i think i've my style has ventured out so much since turning pro because i never really went out of the country until i was about twenty one so i was very american girl. I feel like my style's ventured out a little bit since then so i've had some discoveries along the way and it's certainly one of my favorite pastimes The tournaments being able to go shopping and get the get different designers and things that maybe i wouldn't be able to get like when i'm in the states so what was the biggest prisons where now you look back like. Oh i shouldn't have bought that. I definitely overpaid for that. I wish i could take it back. They won't take it back. And i would hate to like say what it was because my parents would be like now. I don't know. I mean i think There's been some handbags that yeah definitely broke the bank. But yeah we won't. We won't talk about that as much in the next week. Gotta win this tournament now. Because i just paid my bought that showed them. Yeah so you have. I've had the opportunity coach against one time. And it's like giving me nightmares. Because i was like she come out there and does knock you off the court. No matter what you tell the person there'd be nothing to do but you have one of the most famous on court. Coaching business. "Like i'm expecting now like i'm trying to be on my game all the time but sometimes that's not enough and you know i had a lot of changes this year. New agency new coach A lot of new members on my team. Not just that but dealing with all of that and playing twenty twenty was a bit tough. Because i was always looking back at twenty nine. I was telling myself. oh why. can't i be or play. Like i was in two thousand nineteen but that was the problem. I was always looking back into the past. But i had to realize that i'm a new person now. I've gone through so much so much. More than i have in two thousand nine hundred and having that outlook changed everything for me and that started happening after wimbledon preparing for the hardcourt season. And that's why. I think i had better results than the past year. Yeah so you talked about. It sounded like you know the hangover twenty states. So you see 'em come right and sort of win third wti tournament and then she was a and for me. I look at it was like roof. He's about to hitter right. And so what advice would you have for a young player like you are sort of had a good run sort of magical sort of couple months to dealing with what comes after what. What advice would you give her good question. It's hard to give advice to someone that you know hasn't gone through. Let's say the aftermath because so many people have told me. No don't let it go to your head Stand the present moment and don't get too caught up with like sponsors money whatever And you know. I tried to take that advice but it was hard sometimes but now i realized going through that. That's i really had to do so. I mean if emma can you know do what i just said. "Me that that gives me so much fulfillment. Because like i said one of my goals is to be able to accomplish something like that and having that in mind really helped me push through the last couple of tournaments of the year. Obviously the last tournament. I got injured but I stated my zone. I didn't really pay attention on what was going around me and i think that was the key for me But then you know twenty twenty head. I didn't play anything in twenty twenty. It was just like completely year off which is super rare especially at that age like that But that's another story. Maybe you're gonna ask a question about that. I don't know but let me know if you want to so. I think that your generation has a harder time being a professional athlete. Before you know back when you think about like steffi graf. Aaron kim clijsters back in the day. They didn't have social media. They didn't have all these things to sort of like getting their from coaching standpoint. It was easy is like yeah. You're on a roll with him. Parents at home. You can kind of control that messages and control like the tone but now the practice go to dinner go in the room and they wake up the next day and like something. Bad happened mike. What could have happened with you locked in your own last night but it could be she media messages. How do you manage that now. You know like a lot of nba players during playoffs. I don't check my phone. I like my phone to my best friend. And nobody asked for tickets whatever. How do you manage the outside forces. is it a week. Give of your phone. what do you wish tactic. Yeah so. I definitely Stay off my phone as much as i can to be honest social media. I personally don't like it because of all the external voices. But i know it's an amazing platform for myself to you. Know inspire others or for sponsor reasons. And that's basically what i use it for and you know to interact with fans. I try not to look through comments like i said or through messages. Sometimes i like to go through messages and reply to som- just so you know i get that interact with my fans. I'm sure they appreciate that. A lot But for sure during a tournament. I try not to look at it If i have to post all just post that and completely turn off my phone And that i guess start just a little bit before the tournament but yeah i definitely was tough seeing some rude comments at times or some rude messages. That can really with your brain But i have a really good team around me. I have amazing people around me. That helped me stay grounded. And i can't thank them enough for that. "But i think from the fan base. They don't always pay attention to order three weeks ago. She quarter two weeks ago. She sent me last week. So this as a coach to say that we can always tell like we're playing well enough. All of course stuff is sort of calm and a nice and tight and the draw sort of line. Hotel is nice. Yup right you know all this. And there's no other like distractions around us while because i didn't have as many but you know with injuries as well. I did have some in two thousand. Nineteen but i recovered from that so i was just locked in and it is just like okay. I wasn't he goes open two weeks later so he knew because you could always tell even with. Sloan went to the finals of the french open. I was like she lost like the week before to putin. Save in the first round and we were playing well enough to have a retirement when you win out. Split a birkin bag which you didn't have to do it. Cause lots of on our way whatever's like 'cause you could sort of yeah. Everything was sort of calm. We had a good trip. No tom plan where hitting the ball whale practicing. You can sort of see it so he felt. This didn't totally come out of nowhere. But he you know your player talking about life after because we struggled after as all right. Tell me about life after where you talked about. No pressure no expectation. Now is like oh. Us open now. Every time i play the next president plays you're going to have a career win right for them like a headlining loss for you. Tell me about the chats. So the way. I handled everything afterwards. I think was very well. Because i stayed off social media like i never really went through comments or through other people's posts about me. I just stuck to you know being in my zone and focusing on my next tournament. Obviously when i came back to toronto is a little bit hectic because people started giving me presents and start asking for autographs for whatever reason on the side of the street. I never expected that to happen. But i enjoyed because one of my goals is to be able to inspire others and i know i can do that through sport because you know when i go out there i can give my best and just show and give a good example to the younger players. That are just starting to come up. Or even you know people who are married or i don't know because i get messages on instagram That i did check but you know during quarantine during everything that happened of people. Just say oh my god like i started playing tennis because of you you inspired me to push through this exam or whatever it is and to..
