"It was to head down to the nation's capital for a visit with bob woodward and elsa walsh to journalists under one roof as an old news man myself i felt right at home elon. Bob began talking about how to save the world. The moment we walked in they live in a beautiful section of georgetown by bought this great colonial house just a few years before he and elsa matt but they've turned it into a lovely home by maggie their miniature poodle who followed us from room to room as we set up our gear. Just a cub reporter. They had laid out some delicious snacks. Which i'm afraid. We dove into somewhat noisily at times once we settled in also talked about growing up as one of six kids with four sisters and a brother. I was surprised to learn that. Just like marlowe. As a young girl. She never dreamt of getting married. My parents were irish immigrants. My mom was actually eight months pregnant with me when she came with my dad. My dad was a civil engineer. Any sort of all over the world and wanted to go to san francisco for a year. He thought it would be fun. My dad was on bipolar and Handsome intelligent but you know pretty up and down meaty so she had a rough time with your father. You know a lot of fun but he could be difficult and My mom she was just this sort of safe harbor of of both love and on and acceptance. And when i think about marriage and what was important that i learned from her was just that you're in it and you you stay in it. Is that what you did want to get married because you have to stick with it forever. Now you know you always like to think of yourself as being sort of an independent operator with all your own thoughts being very original but all the great icons at that time. Gloria steinem back girl. They weren't getting married now. That was being strong and that in spain Adventurous and so. I think i wanted to be part of that movement. So when i met. Bob i didn't want to marry you but i wanted to be with you. You met in the newsroom. We use smitten. Right away is interesting. Then bradley swiped silly runner in to meet the editor of the local at your you. There's just something. How old were you really out. You're not two thousand. Eighteen thirty seven hundred sixty six thirty seven and just hit over heels in love physically emotionally and the added benefit of the risk. Now you may not agree is you sometimes didn't like the secrecy now. That's true. But i understood why we secret. We married right now. But i wasn't working for him but he was in the chain of command and You know being in journalism. It was like a hotbed of gossip all the time. Yeah part of it is so much of what you do during your reporting processes secretive. And you can't talk about it with a lot of people and you can trust. You can trust right. I mean one of the things we were talking about is that we were just this weekend when i tell you about deep throat. When did i tell you who it was again. Was it like eighty two or eighty three. That's now i think it was eighty one. I think we've been going out and head of relationship for maybe year and we were up to dinner on street member that you list who was deep throat and i said well allow you told her out. How many people who told up till then curl bradley and it was. So why did you trust her. Be be around. You know when you see it. You must have been really impressed that he trusted you with. I was really. I was surprised to realize very ever talked about afterwards. Thought you might check back. I just love that. He instinctively trusted her with one of the biggest secret in american history. I got the sense that their connection to each other has a lot to do with their childhoods. Elsa had this incredibly stable family over father's was bipolar but my was not stable at all. My parents were divorced. When i was quite young about twelve or thirteen and her mother hospital hit a nervous breakdown and my father came to say that my mother kris of out of the hospital now. And she's married tom. Barnes who was my father's best friend. And i remember thinking to myself. You're in this alone. Well you can have a mother. The father and friends and you're in alum in was very kind of just you know in your view. Think your mom's loves you enough to leave the marriage and marry somebody else let alone my best friend and it was so painful but also kind of off okay. I'm this. I'm in this alone. And i gotta figure it out how hand After college i was in the navy. And i present signed up for naval. Rotc and i married a woman. Who is my high school sweetheart is they say she was very smart. Lovely person and when i was off on your marriage just fell apart and it was kind of second act of the. Oh okay and then. After nixon resigned i was in a romance and got married second time and we had tell league in that didn't last and i didn't last because she essentially we had tell and left with tally and that was kind of the third act of okay. You're in this lung so when we started going now and when my mother died i wanted to get married but i was embarrassed to propose to you because i felt i had all of these. Two earlier failed marriages and you were. You know wonderful and we were married in nineteen eighty nine. I think i was surprised when bob asked me to marry him. Because it was unexpected. And i remember we've been together long nine years. And it was unexpected fabulous unexpected. We were out at our house in maryland and we were sitting out on this little small sun room that we have and we were talking about his mom on who died and he said Nothing would make their happier than if you would marry me. And instead of shocked. I was.

"It's it's it feels like magic but it isn't because there are these things that you count on each other for. I completely count on fill. And i'm not what one would call a needy little person but i need something from him many things but one of the things that i need is a when i'm when i go down when i get blue about. All of these things ought to work. I'm getting older. Whatever it is that i choose to be blue about that day. Only phil can can bring me back. And i'm from hollywood. I know a or when i see one. You know what he says to me. You know it just is immediately respond to it. You know and i i come back. He waters why plant and come back. You know so. I count on it. Gratitude is huge for me. It's okay to be wanting more different knowledge Beasts be grateful and celebrate. You know the first thing. I wrote in an autobiography i wrote in nineteen. Seventy eight first line is if i could start over as a parent and i wish i when my children please. I would tell them. It's tough because when you how old were you when aged you talking about for yourself when you didn't when you all of a sudden had four sons by your son Shelvin wow smack dab to can. I carve out a place in the world. Can i do this. So you're so forward-looking show every day but parenting is the lousy joh- for a perfectionist or to even have satisfaction. Because it's just everybody's doing the best camera i can. I add one thing you know. Be quiet i. My form of seduction early in life was to find the persons gaping hole in their personality. Or they're being and then fill it become indispensable to them. You know saw a lot of guys. So i was like around a lot of kind of broken wing wounded kind of people. And don't do that. You know find somebody who's playing at the same level you are. That's actually find somebody that likes being who they. Yes that's better that's great but that's also very interesting. What you're saying is great that find who likes who they are. That semi ain't nothing. They're perfect might need held on but they basically they're not running from who they are. Life is not a series of pointing fingers and blaming. You're not gonna be the one to save them. You're not gonna change. That's what's great about the role. Well you're not going to chance her. Yeah never fix the broken wing. I met somebody who is so happy being herself. She needed me to show up and be me and be real. But she didn't need me to fix her. And i've done a lot of fixing which leads to anger. You know. equality inequality patronizing. It's horrible when you think you're the person fixing somebody else. It sucks and terrible. Everyone's as we work to explore important provocative ideas about the world around us so far. We've discussed what it's like to move back into your parents house. And why that's actually an incredible. And empowering thing to do we've also talked about what it means to be a radical in society expects you to be practical and pragmatic. We'd love for you to join us. Subscribe to cut in your favorite podcast to get new episodes kitchen. Hi i'm phil donahue and marlo thomas and we're going on a series of double dates to find out what makes a marriage last. We flew out to santa monica to visit. Ted danson and mary steenburgen. Their house is carved into the side of a hill. It's a craftsman style. Bungalow built in nineteen twenty two and it has what is called a living roof which is covered with greenery to fight off climate change. Ten mary decorated themselves is very relax and homey mostly. It was their warm connection to each other. That grabbed her attention from the start. This is fun. Yeah we've been so excited. We're really that you asked us. Well you came to mind immediately. Really people are always asking us. How did you. How are you married too long. And what i like in likes me. He's cute boys smells and that's a big deal so smell good. Ted likes to play the rascal but once we settled at their farm style kitchen table and began to talk. He was so honest and vulnerable rule of four of us here. I'm the only one who's only married once. Yes i'm the third. i'm being married. Well that maybe that's an interesting way to start because you're a wild optimist or you're total. Denial i mean. I got married and college carnegie Halfway through and i think it's fair to say the real communication would have been I'm afraid to go to new york by myself. Are you oh well. Let's go Sharon apartment and buddies that would have been kind of the emotional truth but somehow we ended up getting married and twenty two and Married for five years good friends but certainly not you know a a marriage And then got divorced and married again and had children but still a huge level of unconsciousness on my part and that lasted fifteen years. I mean my life was incredibly messy but underneath. There was a lot of work going. On where i was trying to stop being a liar and wake up and everything. Pretty much was not hugely faithful. Leave it at that. So i did all this work myself but by the time we met i was convinced i was incapable of hemming in a relationship that i wouldn't mess up. This was back in one thousand nine hundred ninety four when both of them were in a film called pontiac moon. And just like when. I first met you. Ted was drawn to marry immediately. And what was it about her. When you cast an apart- together you have an excuse to look at somebody in the eye whereas otherwise i'm kind of shy. We're about to work together so you you're supposed to know each other so you share and i was i was like i said a hot mess and so i shared my life with her on that first night and it was very clear. Nothing was possibly going to happen. Because nutty i was and mary was looking to be in a relationship so it really started off friends until halfway through the production. Took a canoe ride jump in here. I don't wanna do model. Okay all right so we were playing This kind of one thousand nine hundred sixty s kind of it was a very strange fell. But we're not going to have a relationship. Mary ni- pica's that's clear but we should do something fun and kind of old fashioned romantic because that's kind of what the film is like a by then. I knew that when. I showed up at lunch and somebody else was sitting next to mary. The part of me was like Little grumpy that. I hadn't got there in time to sit next door but then we took a canoe ride and it was just tied. Big tidal river called the mendocino river crack big river. And we got into a canoe that had an outrigger. It was just a beautiful connote. And there was a group of three or four other people going up and we outdistanced them quickly and we just kept going around the next bend. It was always in the front me in the back. effortlessly paddling. Which is you learn a lot. I think in a canoe and there was very little conversation except when it was right. Sea otters blue herons saw. It was just. It was just magically beautiful and lincoln peaceful and at ease and i think on the way down. We stopped to have a little bite on the corner of the side of the river. And you kept wanting to turn around us. That was kind of for our wedding. The chew part of our bows was a poem about that canoe. Ride it was really a charter for our marriage About look you know. Finding the truth in each other's eyes. And but mary what has in our entire life. Been the person that goes. Let's let's go around the next bend. Come on let's let's do this. I'm usually the one going. Oh i don't you know..

"That has changed. Oh yeah is the last three years. I've been sober. So i don't drink any alcohol so that's helped a lot because that's not only made me more depressed. But it also made me more heightened to want to start a fight or be more right or be more headstrong. So that's been a big change. Did you do that. Because neil astra to. No no there's substance abuse in my family. And i think that i owed it to myself and i owed it to my kids. It's one of the things. I'm just deeply proud about. David is his determination to do that. It's very hard complicated decision. But it never got to the point. Where i was i was in jail or harmed blonde myself. My bottom was not bad but it was bad enough. That i needed to change or i could persevere anything and i would still be with him. He's an amazing parent. And i think what makes off what makes me love. David is the depth of flavour. Is the the amount of routes that have been planted. Will you can't control where they go and that's why it's fun because it's always changing you know Well we we. We realized that we did do make certain decisions about things. Have i i. I learned that. I wasn't a very good listener. And that when phil had a problem it took about ten years and one day he was telling me something was very troublesome for him and he stopped the middle east. And please don't say anything. Don't tell me anything and the thing that bothered him is that i'm a fixer. So if somebody gives me a problem. I am going for the phone so I had to learn. I know i can do this. But this isn't the way to do this with with another person. And not you know. And he wanted he said we stopped producing me. I can do it and it was big. They think a relationship. We all need to go with the flow a little bit if you missed the flight and if the other person to blame there's nobody to blame them here you are. You missed a flight now. You can stay at the airport for a couple more hours. We spent a lot of time in our relationship coming up with individual expectations of how the party's gonna go how the vacations gonna go. How tonight's gonna go. How how that phone calls going to go. And it's rarely met and and you can be bothered by being inaccurate and your expectations or you can just go with the new outcome. I think expectations is huge. What are you see that makes marriage last. And maybe it's just the expectation thing which is really better said than anybody is that laughter. I was gonna say lack of me. I really wasn't really is. I think that that's part of the reason. One of the main reasons we stayed together because we just make each other laugh all the time he makes me laugh so much vice versa. And that's neil patrick harris and his husband david burka. I sure wish i'd been there for that. I do to. You would've loved them until next time. I'm marlo thomas donahue doesn't even have to be decision. "How old is the house. Nineteen zero five. Wow i it's been everything from a speakeasy for mill workers to a music school for girls to a single person occupancy and when you think it was a brothel is just wishful began to wonder where in this five storey house. Would we have our talks. Who's the decorator. David has better taste than i do. So if we ever have disagreements about Interiors it usually comes from a financial standpoint in that. I tend to say dude. We have dogs and two small children. We don't need a forty billion dollar rug. So you're the sort of decorator in your the accountant. Then they led me into their red velvet screening room with rows of quickly theater seats. Just like an old hollywood. What a fitting place to chat with these two actors. What kind of marriages did your parents have. My parents were together until my mom passed away years ago. And your parents. My parents are still married. And they've celebrated fifty plus years of marriage so they've always been only together with each other so because you were gay. Did you think you wouldn't have that. I thought that i was going to be alone or single for most of my adult life. But i had a random path from adolescence into adulthood because i ended up being on a television show when i was fifteen years old and so all pre puberty through puberty. When you're figuring out what turns you on i was. I felt a bit under a microscope of television. And so i didn't have the freedom to randomly hit on somebody or go to a bar. So i i was by myself a lot and had a fantastic group of friends in los angeles. Who knew everything about me. But i just i just wasn't dating. I had never even showered with another person till i was in my late twenties so it was all new to me. And what about you. Deeming i you know. I didn't know what i wanted to. Until sort of i got into college and then after college living in new york i you know i saw lots of different relationships than men having babies and having a family so i i always knew that i was going to settle down and be with someone and stay with someone and have a family and kids. Once we started dating. We never really stopped so we didn't date lots of people while we were dating each other and then decide. We just started dating moved in together. And we've been together ever since same. Sex marriage wasn't legal at that time and and it seemed like a potential but not an inevitability and so we were more conscientious of what wording we used to call each other. I just didn't like the word partner for some reason i just. I still think that's a very strange way to it. Eliminates any sense of lava lover of or some only rome antic lake invasive of your life lover eighties and boyfriends very juvenile was forty calling. Fill my boyfriend and to seems like it's short lived like we've just met together for years. So is it better half and then and then once the marriage thing happened it happened very quickly but we didn't want to get married because it was suddenly allowed to get married. We wanted to get married to get because we wanted to get jeweler already in a committed relationship correct and that was and did you get kids. I just didn't want to go to the courthouse. With a with a hundred other people and people holding up signs and other people picketing and refers i. It's an. I don't want to get married in context owning remember with my family right in italy when it's legal and it's not a big deal. The nice thing about destination wedding as you can easily reduce the number of people. You've been very small weddings. Only forty seven people. We've got married with thirty five and it wasn't a great wonderful. The nice thing about talion wedding or a any italian trip is that everything is so delicious there. Yeah and what we're was testing this rueda. Yeah the mountains in a one of the things that i've noticed because we've been married forty years. Do you count from the day that you started dating or from your barrier wedding. We're counting from the day we got married. We met three years before but we knew immediately. I mean we. We fell them up. We went we went to dinner. We went to bed. That was it was it. That's because we're gay. We count from the day a reverse day because then you add ten years dog enga- years fifty years. We've been together.

"Hi i'm phil donahue and marlo thomas we've been married for over forty years but when i was younger wanted to be married it didn't seem possible for two people to live together for life and you were half right. Nearly half of all marriages end in divorce. The let about the ones at last. What's the secret sauce. I have no idea but the best way to find out is to talk with some long married couples. You know like a double date and so we did. We made dates with couples. We admire actors. Athletes musicians journalists. And you know what. I love about a double date. Everybody talks everybody remembers and you get a real sense of who this couple is together. Exactly take by all davis and julius tenant what a couple here are two great actors with all the talent and none of the eagle. The first feeling you get from them is welcome remember. Julius was standing outside on the street in front of their house just to be sure we didn't get lost such a great. Hello told us a lot about them right from the start. My big thing me. Julius is where the fun we have the best parties on getting to know you. Let's go workout for. Should we settled down at their dinner table with these tall comfy chairs that you could just sink into and we started talking. I felt an immediate bond with like me. She never could imagine herself with a life partner. I want to get married either. I never had any visions of walking down an aisle with the white dress. I admired every woman who was alone and happy and who had a lot of boyfriends. I was a narcissistic artist. That's what i was right. And then then. I read somewhere that you prayed for husband. When i was up at williamstown theatre festival i was doing the raisin in the sun and a friend of mine said why you alone and i felt like oh my god. I almost started crying and my eyes were welling up. He was like. Is there a reason why you don't have a relationship. I said while. I guess i've just never found anyone who loved me. You know. and then. He was the one joseph edwards i know because he just got married got married. He said go into your room. This is what i want you to do. And get on your knees and you ask god for bubble bio psycho. Although on fire. To jesus person and you did i did. I did and i. There was a specific prayer. Right that you mean very specific because he told me to be specific and literally. I was like okay. This is what i want now. He really doesn't have to be black. But i want him to be black. I want him to look like a football player. Because i love football players and one the beat from the south. 'cause i love countrymen and i kinda would appreciate it. He's already been married. he's already had kids. Because i don't want that pressure. And i want him to be like maybe very spiritual church going funny. You know maybe someone who is an artist. Tuesay's got those artistic sensibility. And i met julius three and a half weeks later three and a half weeks three and a half weeks. How on city of angels stephen bochco 's city of angels. We actually met during the pilot episode. I was dating a girl. I was really trying to run away monster. And so when i met viola i gave her my card and then she called and then we went on our first date and twenty years later here we are and i felt like i had done all the work before. Then i was in therapy. I finally went to there. Because i had screen actors guild. Insure i so. When julius came along. I remember telling my therapist. You know this guy gave me a car in his really good looking and she was like all okay because you could tell us you maybe a little bored with what i was talking about a talk about something else so and i said this guy gave cardon he. Oh he invited me to church and she was like have you called them back. I said no. I don't know 'cause i'm struck. I gotta get my created. I gotta get my life in order. She said call him. Wow and and i said yeah but you know what. They may be something wrong with him. She's like there's something wrong with everyone viola. There's something wrong with view. It took me six weeks to call him so nervous. I was having anxiety attacks. La and then me finally called them. I said he's never gonna remember me and he remembered me and i remember. He invited me to his place where he worked and the openness emotional availability. I never had that before usually men. It's like okay. How do you feel how do you feel about me. You love me. Do you not love me. Want to be not julius. You'd never had to guess. Mom did a good job. She really did. Mama told me to respect. Women knew that there was a certain kind of decorum around the way you needed to treat. Women feel said to me one time. What do you have so much against. Marriage i well i think that people lose courteousness and i. I really don't like that. I don't wanna be treated in a discourteous dismissive way and we do that for each other. I mean i'll say to him up to get you a sweat. It's cold out here or he'll say that to me. There's a concern for the other person. I went to an all boy catholic high school and one of the things that was given to us. Were dancing lessons and they taught us know you. Don't call the woman you place your hand gently on her back and you'll be sure to return her to wherever it was when you asked her to dance being taught grace. And that's a lovely i. I will talk girl school. We both catholic management to so. And i think i think sharing not so sharing religion or faith but sharing the values of that when people ask me what i. I think. Our marriages lasted at that. Will we define certain important words the same like what's fair and unfair. Yes what's acceptable and unacceptable. It feels says to me. That's not fair. i know. I know what it means. I don't.

"I've always noticed the most important things happen when you're not looking for them back in hundred seventy seven and went on this talk show to promote a project. I remember meeting her in the green room before the show. The big brown is the firm handshake. The warm smile and then he walks the thick white hair. Those killer blue is it was like one of those shampoo commercials where everything suddenly goes into. Slow motion arlo. Thomas is well i knew. She was bright articulate but she was also very sexy at the urban nineteen fifty-three she would have been what we catholic boys called and impure thaw. Excuse me i'm updating you. Don't you just love these smooth show. I felt like a first date. Phil asked me more personal questions than i've ever been asked in an interview. He dug in about the man. I dated and asked if it was someone special looking back. You probably wasn't very professional but it was honest. I'm sorry that we are out of time. You are really fascinating. Said it when we were off the air. And i want to say you are loving generous and you like women and it's a pleasure and whoever the woman in your life is very lucky. It was a chemical reaction. We married three years later. Shortly after thirty ninth anniversary we found out that a couple. We knew good friends been married forever for getting a divorce. We were stunned. We began to think. Wow if this happened to them could it happen to us. What did they go wrong. A mortar the point or do we go right and it got us wondering. Is there really a secret sauce to successful marriage. Maybe if we talked with a lot of couples we could unlock the mystery of what makes a marriage last. So that's how we wrote our book pulling together. The stories of forty celebrated couples. And now we're bringing their voices to you in this podcast life. Viola davis and julius tenant sting and trudi styler judge. Judy and jerry scheindlin raanana romano. Neil patrick harris and david burqa. We talked with actors athletes musicians journalists even a former president and first lady. And when you sit down on a double date as we did with the incredible couples. You'll hear in this podcast. In interesting thing happens everyone talks. Everyone remembers. i want to get married. I never had any visions of walking down an aisle with the white dress. I admired every woman who was alone and happy and who had a lot of boyfriends. The reason this marriage works is because thankfully she knows i love her. And you know some women who have to hear it out loud when you're married to a guy like me you know. Having kids is build game changer. And when you're two guys you don't accidentally get pregnant as much as we tried honestly. You didn't think that i would do it no i. Didn't you said i dare you write it being divorced right. She served him divorce papers. The next day we have a pretty intense sexual charge between us. Still but as truly sad. That's kind of ephemeral. What's important is that. I really like this woman and she really likes me before you know it. You're all telling stories about first encounters. Parenting health scares infidelity addiction. I mean all the possible challenges that can crop up even in the best of marriages. That's our story. And we're sticking to it. I'm phil donahue marlo thomas and we can't wait to share some of the labs and tears in revelations that we had with these remarkable spouses. It's double date with marlo.
