"That has the guy's name on. It really didn't mendez name on a receipt. A great point. He leaves his hitless behind his contacts. Doughnuts and coffee and every -cations yes. Hey right yeah. Though the fact they when he goes to stake out when he goes to to hide and crocodiles from crockett gets home and like he just leaves a half eaten doda on the floor. I think anybody would notice that carolina would have noticed that. Yeah he must've like actually he must have panicked when they showed up and kicked it over but then why panicking is an elite event. I forgot to mention one of the things i loved about. This show is like they would use zito and swiatek. It'd be like we're on location at this bar blah blah blah and those guys would just be really become bartenders and we are the location needed twenty dollars and tip. They do if they're at a casino all the sudden they're blackjack dealer. They re really malleable. I was impressed by them. Casting whatevs nick. Nolte and jeff. Bridges were the two movie stars. They went after but back then. Movie stars didn't do tv twenty years later. That probably make you work turned it down. He was already kind of thing. And then it became don johnson versus larry wilcox of chips and they decided that Larry wilcox already had the police pedigree with ships and it would have been too weird. Larry wilcox was really really really like a c. Minus some macy made the final cut. It kinda shows how hard it was to find great people back there. But then don johnson gets it and then after two years when he when he had a big contract dispute wanted to leave they were going to replace them with mark harmon. Yeah because he was leaving saint elsewhere. Right yeah so was just going to move mark harmon in there. That actually have been the best thing for the show. Don johnson had just banged out forty episodes name because it would have been cool too because if they had killed crockett off it. Would you know that would have been like a sick multi-party episode and some incredible overacting by tubs. Speaking tubs verified. I read it. And i was like. This can't be true. And i looked it up. Denzel washington edition for tubs. That's fuck didn't get it philip. Michael thomas beat out. Denzel washington for tubs apparently Philip michael thomas don johnson had some reading and just had this undeniable chemistry. Which you can see in the show greg. They didn't rehearse they looked at each other and they were like where the guys pretty much. Yeah pretty much. So philip michael. Thomas beat out denzel washington. What are the great actors. We had for a job. I just read that second producer craig. I know you're i know you're you're disbelief. That we're even doing this podcast. You didn't know anything about this show. And you watch. Philip michael thomas acting for the pilot and all the stuff that he does. That made him philip. Michael thomas is it inconceivable to you that this person would have beat now denzel washington for a job. Yes it's one hundred percent inconceivable. I went onto class. You guys why have. I never heard of this man what happened. It's it's the classic he had one thing that was it but i don't even know what the sports equivalent would be..
Top 5 High-Concept Horror, Bad Hair, The Wolf Of Snow Hollow
"Welcome to film spotting Josh we grew up in the eighties we were blessed with a lot of things including the Golden Age of the high-concept movie but I know there are some people listening who are wondering what this phrase really means. We will certainly defined in more detail as we get into our top five here in a little bit but our producer, Sam has a good thought. If the premise of your movie is right there in the title. That's pretty much dead giveaway that it's a high concept movie snakes on a plane there. You know maybe the platonic ideal of high-concept movie, right? That's it right there. If all you gotta do is tell someone the title and they understand everything the movie is about it's probably using a high concept. Yes. Snakes on a plane maybe at times scary in its own way, not exactly a horror movie a longtime listener on twitter Charles Canzoneri was following a similar line of thinking he said invasion of the body snatchers night of the living dead. The. Those titles kind of say it all too. Don't they Josh Yeah. We'll. We'll kind of get into exactly the way you and I at least defined this, but you could make an argument for those for sure we will get to our picks here in a moment but first we did want to spend a couple of minutes on the movie that inspired the list Justin. Simians new bad hair. So yeah the bad hair of the title here is A. Bloodthirsty, we've that the star, the movie L. Lorraine's Anna She unwittingly submits to as part of plot her attempts really to get ahead at this black entertainment network sort of an MTV style network she works at this is set in nineteen, eighty nine we should say so she's been there awhile she's been overworked underpaid largely ignored and and sees a new look as perhaps a way forward. Now, Simeon directed two thousand fourteen dear white people and he created the TV spinoff to he takes the college set racial identity satire of that earlier film and amps it up here Yes. There are some really gnarly murders to this definitely counts as a horror film. He layers in some observations about assimilation and authenticity in that era late eighties, early nineties. Let's clip. Anna. Does your hair. No. We. Aren't you tired of it. All the stairs you get walk into the army lobby everyone wondering why you're here. If you went to any other floor in the tower for job interview. You wouldn't get past reception. And you know that. Sisters get fired lesson every day. have. Music people have certain expectations and my girls need to flow freely. Wonder. You want to be one of my girls. Yes. that. Is L. Lorraine's Anna with Vanessa Williams as her CEO. Zora Josh you did like Dear White People Justin Simians debut film as you mentioned in fact, nominated for a golden brick here on film spotting back in two thousand fourteen. What did you think of that? Hair I kinda loved it actually Really Yeah it's it's pretty insane and you know not a perfect film by any means in some in some ways an experiment in genre for Simeone, you can tell feeling his way and having some fun with the horror comedy elements here, but you know what? I really wished. Adam. Is that I. I mean obviously nowadays, we wish we can see anything with a full theater, but this thing really would have benefited from a very loud a very lively audience preferably like maybe around midnight something like that I think then you could get into the vibe of the film a bit more easily than say just you know watching it on Hulu at home but I still had fun with it. I think what Simeon does in terms of some of the extreme camera angles and the slow zooms there. That are a little insidious There's a great scene where Anna is at the salon getting. About to get the we've and she's kind of walking through this hallway of hair samples that is probably going to haunt my dreams. I think not only the way it's filmed but remember that old seinfeld bid about like when you find hair and things something about like if it's on our heads everyone, you know it's completely normal everyone loves it. But the minute it's removed from your head everyone freaks out that seeing like totally captured that for me So yeah, I think this works as horror I think the main performance here's pretty strong by lorraine and I think there's a lot of fun comic performances going. On along the edges here from people like Jay Ferrell Lean Awaith James Vanderbeek of all people who really doing a Don Johnson Miami Vice era performance I think the setting the eighty nine setting added a lot for me. Just kind of remembering that I don't know if it's like Yo MTV raps I'm sure there's a different countdown show around then the capture, the vibe of that really. Well, I think here even give us a music video and original music video with Kelly Rowland playing this. Pop Star. Hip, hop star who's kind of a mixture I don't know tell me what you think I was getting like. Janet. Jackson slash. Paula Abdul feel from that music video. So that was fun. There's a lot of fun stuff here. Yeah.

"Get ready for rush hour. Buckle up. It's time for the chicks on the right speed round. Soviet strongman Eric Holcomb strikes again. My God, you're gonna be wearing those masks until September. 25th. Wow, it sucks. Listen, it's going to be longer than that. Let's just all face it. This is never ever, ever, ever ending. I'm not wearing a mask right now. Come and get me and there's several voters of him not wearing a mask. Yeah, Whatever. I'm over all of this hay. So does, he said something about how we're doing better. I can't remember in the press conference, there was something that was said. About how much better would you decided so positive about? Super positive about how we're doing? We're all like I can't remember. It was very positive Power pander flat pants. Hunker down, E. It was It was very wasn't hunker down. It was like we're just doing really good. Everybody ever. I noticed he was doing the doing the Don Johnson yesterday. The T shirt with the Blazer over the T shirt, was it? I didn't see that at all. So I don't watch those press conferences because I just don't care. I just I didn't watch it, but we know you'll give us the scoop. Yeah, because we know that you are obsessed with it, so I don't but so what he was doing the Don Johnson, Miami Vice wasn't pastel was a white T shirt with a blue jacket. Very cool, very hip, because that's what he is. He's very cool is very hip, stealing people's freedoms and liberties and businesses and jobs, Very cool and very hip. Very shooter. McGavin. What a piece of crap and rob Lab. What? Don't be so mean. How do you think the one million people who have lost their job feel you think they feel I'm being a little mean? I'm sure that they do get a little bit riled up on occasion. Yeah, anything all those businesses that shut down every open think they think being a little mean and I do feel like they would probably feel a little bit. On edge these days because they don't get a government check. I'll make Eric Holcomb a deal. You stop stealing people's jobs. You stop shutting down businesses. You stop threatening unconstitutional executive orders you call special session, a legislative input and I'll be the nicest person in the whole world. See Mark's face right now she'd look so constipated. She has that. Look that look on her face. You know me too. I know I wanted all the stop Tio. I just wanted all the stop. I'd love nothing more than to never have to say this guy's name ever ever ever again. Very quick. Can I take a moment of personal privilege? Yes, it's your birthday, but it's my birthday gift to you in just a second. I'm going to do in a case. Thanks, Pervy..
Thunderstorms and excessive heat fuel wildfires in California
"Dealing with a searing heat wave is also doing battle with numerous wildfires, including a big one in the north that was apparently sparked by a lightning strike. Don Johnson on His New Film 'Knives Out'
"This is popcorn where we tell you what's happening at the movies and there's a movie now that is a WHO Dunnit of sorts but to me. It's the most fun that I've had at the movies movies this year. It's called knives out. And one of the stars is my guest today. Don- Johnson here especially little torture chamber. We Ah the black inside the black kind event also. Well people confess when they sit in this chair. I'll tell you anything anything. Anything he wanted to unburden yourself on. This is a you know I'm I'm ready. I'm ready to just leave. Just push the button. Okay Yeah who did it. No I is a movie that actually begins with the murder but it's not like we know anything well. The interesting thing is is that in the first ten ten minutes you see the actual death actual murder you see and so without knowing without knowing what you're meant to see or what what what you know there. And then you spend the next COUPLA hours having a blast watching these incredibly beautifully flog people entitled I really it just Hilarious it's Christopher amherst character that murdered right and he's having his eighty fifth birthday and yes this all star cast including you. I looked at that movie into any one of these bastards could adopt. Yeah that cast. Is You know the the interesting thing that happened. Is that when we got together to make this movie. It all came together pretty fast and we we arrived in. We shot out of south side of Boston towards Wellesley in this in that house in a big mansion. Yeah and and We all had these new enormous trailers not more than two hundred yards away from the house. we never used them. All we did was as we go downstairs in the basement of this house and we'd picked a room a lot like this a lot more friendly but I had a little more humor to it not much but we would sit around and tell stories about the movies. We'd done it asked you know I'd asked Daniel Daniel Daniel Craig about you know what. Tell me about that stunt and tell me what you know about about this and that and he had asked me about things that that We had done Christopher plummer summer and and I've known Christopher for a long time we we held down a couple of barstools and in San Francisco. I'm not shocked. And that and Jamie Lee Curtis who plays. You're pissed. Oh she he's still see. Well I worked out pretty well because she plays my wife and the thing and I showed up for work she started bossing me around and I said okay. Why not and captain? America's your son Chris Evans. Yeah this normal. Sure everybody's just hanging out there that hey birthplaces and there's a lot of movies that I see sometimes where I think the actors actors are having a great time. But I'm not in this case it's red from what you guys were doing to the audience when we see I know it's infectious. It really is. Yeah and that's harder actually think you know the the the the extraordinary extraordinary thing about this We didn't have a table read. We didn't rehearse we just showed up on the first day and you no. It's not an uncomplicated. No people have to and so we showed up on the first day. And we we start to go and I and and I hit a I hit the tone that I think is right. and Lo and behold Jamie Lee tosses the ball back to me and Scott the same tone and then we started to roll and everybody else sort of you know did their thing and we kind of brought that sense of joy in and in the moment to the to the to the to the To two knives out and I think that that's what you feel. I think that that joy in that fun kind of ride is what you feel like. You're lifted up. But it has a very contemporary temporary kind of spin on it. Yeah you should explain Richard who is a bit of a rat bastard. Yeah well they're they're all horrible people there are they are but he. He is kind of the personification of the Great. I loved him because he doesn't do. Anything doesn't have a job. AUB doesn't do anything he just you know. He's the personification of entitled because he lives off of His wife in the family and all that stuff I sort of played him like a like a one of those country club sizes. Just kind of walking around with half a buzz on over time. It is whatever you want but yeah people you need to see this. And when they do they can thank us for it. I can thank you. You're welcome. You're welcome bureaus. It's a good time and then I have to bring this up too because it's so great is watchman on HBO. You know I've seen you do a lot of great things things right from the beginning. You know even Miami Vice where when people think of it now and they think of how you're dressed and the style that you had and the suits the cheese and the t shirts and the whole deal no socks yeah started a complete fashion trend but that was a really good show. Yeah I was a little ignoring by in the beginning when there's Oh it's just fluff at style over substance and I was going well not so fast you know we we managed to get had some you know a golden globe. And you're gone. What does that mean? It's true But yeah no I've I've been fortunate in that I've had some Some meaty parts get to play over the years and I just think I mean you'll show Abo thing is is is ah trip. Sorry to interrupt with that Help the the the the writer creator of Damon Lindelof was I think I gave him his first job on Nash Bridges. You don't quite remember no way I mean I know that I I saw now I see. Yeah Yeah and then he went on of course to To do lost and forgiving him. No no no. He's true they should. I should be getting away. From all guys Sean Ryan and Carlton Carlton Cues and all the I mean. So many people came out of that That little incubator. I had gone up there. Those shows Nash Bridges and Miami. I swear long running shows which you're playing cops and I remember hearing you do an interview once and said I'm done with that you know and here you are as sheriff drugged God. You Judge Judge for judge hanging around the hanging around. But there's something in that role on. I know I get killed if I say anything too much about it but you know we probably both would. Well you'd be specially killed but I don't know how you get killed yeah to do this. But it's such a wonderfully complex charming character Thank you might have many many other level the NFL. What's happening? Yeah well when I see an emmy nomination for that too in your future Oh bless your heart. Don't vote for the Emmy Okay. So it's useless. I think you know every listen every reality start somewhere with a rumor. Okay talk to John. You heard it here therefore I give you know I'm not getting it's make it happen. Yeah that is a lot of fun to do too because it was. I didn't have a character who can be sitting at a family dinner and get up and do Rogers and Hammerstein and make everybody feel. I WANNA be around this guy. It was just very ballsy and Fabulous to what you know. That's the way I felt about it because Damon column. He wrote me this beautiful letter and of course if you want an actor's attention you just write him a letter and tell him how great he is and you've got his undivided attention. I guaranteeing I don't care who it is. It's like Kryptonite right. You know. Start Bragging on an actor and telling them how great they are. They'll do anything and I fell victim to that. He came in. Yeah Yeah you're the God. And so he Lewis. Is this Lewis right walk on. I love it but he asked me to come in and he told me he kinda told me that story. The sort of long grades plans for for watching it. I don't think he wanted to scare me off so he didn't. He didn't tell me the whole thing but he told me enough and I and I kind of felt like well. I'm in on the joke and I like that. You know and and I also think that it's an interesting thing to have My fans wouldn't expect it no one expects and it's kind of A. It's kind of like one of those things where I can get away with that these days where maybe couldn't before

I don't think Coker and that we play a couple of other games as well all right if you're Jurassic world fan rested park fan. there is a short film that's the director Colin Trevorrow put together. because we're getting Jurassic world three coming soon and this is a short film that he has made. to kind of and those a teaser it's it's I wouldn't call in an extended trailer because its own story. alright but it gives you an idea of what he's going to do with the sequel because as you know all. the last Jurassic world the island was destroyed in the animals leave on a boat yeah some of them may do like the ark yeah and they made it to America. so imagine camping. in your trailer. there's an Allosaurus outside. and here it comes. it's it's a great little short film so go over different characters these are not ours are in these are not the stars but it gives you an idea of the of the place that were in when the when the next movie will start so look for go to YouTube and look for battle at big rock Jurassic world and it's like a five or six minutes said watch it it's so it's entertaining and scary. and I got mad when the baby dinosaur almost got eaten but luckily that is telling you now don't worry about the baby dinosaur he's fine. Finnair distracting me I want to go online distracting I hear something else that you should go and take a look at something that I'm excited about. is so we got a final trailer. for watching on the TV series on HBO. driven by trauma. obsessed with justice. because of some injustice they suffered. maps it hides the pain away the mask to protect myself right thank. so this is an HBO series California takes place ten years after the. comic book. or the movie and the the makers of the series say that you will be able to just jump right in and watch you won't have to know any backstory will explain everything. I would suggest you maybe see the movie at least frankly when this is for our starts in October October twentieth is when that begins but it's just a a great it looks like a great looking show also that is correct hello there the anybody know. well love the person playing on demand dais you got Jean smart I know you like Jeez why do teens mark seven you got don Johnson and judge Crawford Regina king. Tim Blake Nelson. and Louis Gossett junior. and I keep feeling the actor's name who's playing Ozzie Mendes very famous British after. but they're going to be a very interesting series from the comic book slash movie all rights last week we told you that the Hawkeye TV series which I'm the only person excited about just one where he works as a janitor now he runs he at he owns a man manager he's a property now I thought he was a janitor is what does he do when he's not in the adventure it's going to make a living somehow yeah exactly okay I'll send up the super to fix your poem and they have cast as his protege Hawkeyes protege our discerning. it's Haley field yeah that's it she's going to be playing protege well now they've announced the. the person behind the show Marvel series being developed for the Disney plus tapped Jonathan it glad to act as a writer and executive producer you have not heard his name but he he's got a a resume he sort of started as a writer and executive story editor on mad men. and has gone on to do a lot of very interesting stuff so yeah there Sir sure well like mad men sure writer and producer might give me an idea of kind of this low key direction that they're gonna be taking. major Matt Mason. that's a toy K. from the sixties mid sixties like a GI Joe all right but he was you he he was a spaceman okay Tom Hanks has been trying to get because he loves major Matt Mason. yet a major Matt Mason project of some kind put together for years I would think Tom Hanks could get anything made you think back in two thousand nine he was working on a a three D. animated series take on the character with Graham Yost and he was going to voice the character he just loves major Matt Mason he's been trying and trying and trying. well finally. major Matt Mason they've got a script and they're ready to go forward. it's just Tom Hanks likes spacemen and I think it's a passion project for of it chapter two out in theaters doing extremely well but the director any machete is quite serious because this movie is partly pretty long it's like three hours we have to have Ortiz forty something like that well that's that's not enough for any machete. he says that there's a lot of stuff that we cut out. I want to put it back in there and it'll make it like three and a half hours long. at that time and he's not even done with that he said we're in touch with the studio to make a super cut which is the two movies added to gather all the all the material that is in the not released versions and gather some scenes that I want to shoot to make it a new experience so it's a big goal so you know like they wanted to look into the godfather downtime generation they run them in chronological order so he wants to do a supercut of it it. I remember that they actually the couple actually made a godfather like a big long one out of the three of them the mind of any animals for TV only or something like that I know that's what they do sometimes and like USA network or something like that I can't remember I've seen it. crash.

Nice to have you with us on this Saturday, as I said giants and Orioles game two from beautiful Camden Yards today. So I know we've got an afternoon start on Saturday and then Sunday morning as a typical nine o'clock start on Sunday. So that's our week ahead. Don Johnson joins us longtime sabre member. He is part of Johns Hopkins University. You know. That's in Baltimore lives in Alexandria, Virginia. And he gets a good look at the Orioles and the giants, Don. How are you this morning? Great Martin, thank you for having me on. I would add a native San Francisco. Giants fan to that description. But thank you. Nice for having me on. What did you think of the game last night it was awful? It was awful. And. The giants and national excuse me, the Orioles and nationals on cable every day. And I try to get the giants off MLB, and so it's been a depressing. Depressing summers season so far, but the giants are my love going back to childhood. And that's it's just reading about Sandoval online, while I'm waiting for the interview. So I'm not in a good mood, but I'm not unique him out. And maybe they do better tonight. Well, we'll see they face the guy's given up eighteen home runs and seems to get lit up a lot. So we'll see what they can do. But. They're pitching, as you know, in baseball, by the way, since you're on the line. I'll give you the lineup for today. It's panic Stransky. And right. Posey is that the H today? Sandovol is at first base belt is in left field today. Longoria third at shortstop is Crawford vote is the catcher in center field. So that is the giants lineup today. And I thought maybe Austin would be in there today, the load up another righty against seems to get lit up. All right. Let's talk about your book it's put out by McFarland and I really enjoyed it. It's a collection of essays that you've edited and put together. But that takes us through how this came about in this series of books that you've that you've put out. It'd be my pleasure. I'm one of those kids who grow up in the bay area, not being good enough to play like my father. So I had to do this about twelve years ago, John Thorne who you may know the. Now, the historical official historian, a major league baseball put together a journal called baseball, two words which tried to compile the the very best in research about the game. And we focus on before nineteen twenty and it's academe IQ, but not geeky. I think the stories are very interesting. It's a labor of love on my part, and about to use in Harlem, puts it out as I do a lot of great baseball books and about two years ago, John, as, you know, very, very busy decided he wanted to give this up he turned it over to me and it's been a labor of love is, I said since then. I should I make a plug. If anybody's listening, I'm always entertaining. I'm looking for new authors. We focus on the game before nineteen twenty and a lot of contributors mardi are saver members. And sabre has a reputation being number crunching, and I almost said geeky, but there are a lot of saber members who, like good, writing good sports writing in the old tradition. And we just use modern historical methods and John is very much the godfather to all of us and our journal tries to incorporate the very best in baseball research. I think we do that. I've got another version coming out for this year going to the publisher McFarland in a couple of weeks and was fiddling around with the other stations all week. Well, it's baseball two words. I'm glad you pointed that out to me, because I always put them together baseball ten it's new research on the early game edited by Don Johnson who's with us today. I love it. I started reading it this week. And it's one of those books for me. I like books I can pick up and just start reading at any spot because I've got so much going on here during the week. But give me a couple of your favorite ones in this book that, that sort of grab you. Sure, sure. I have a number of favorites, and I would say mardi that, you know what the informal motto is baseball history is history. So we try to incorporate not only stories of games and seasons and teams. But we, we, we, we try to incorporate social trends, you know women ethnic groups in the game. And in this one I have a couple of favorites. I probably the biggest my favorite is the, the article by Robert Fitz. I think he's from the bay area. It's about the Waseda University visit in nineteen zero five to California. I one of the first grade baseball tours by Japanese players, I, I. A gay San Francisco. Marty I always had left yo dual invented. Introduced baseball to Japan but very clearly as, as Robert Fitz, Mr. Pitts points out in the article, it was the bay area team came in nineteen o five and they played Stanford and cow. And a lot of clubs up along the California coast didn't do all that. Well, but they were greeted with a huge amount of racial abuse, and stereotypes and ethnically what we would call ethnically insensitive nicknames in the chronicle and the examiner and other other newspapers and the play here by the club here in the bay area. Shoot me by the club broke down a lot of those stereotypes. They were well mannered well behaved good ball players on the field. They didn't hit particularly well lost most of the games, but I think, in terms of introduced as looking at the social aspect of baseball that is my favorite in the volume for just. Fun stuff. I highly recommend the article we have about Gabby street, who was a catcher on the Washington senators and that great summer of two great pennant races nineteen did he also was brought from the seals previously played with hammers. This was the he was the first man to drop a baseball off the Washington Monument, with evidently, it was the thirteenth attempt. His friends brought thirteen balls up to the top of the tower and it was the thirteenth. He's finally caught.
