"Malan, who were family friends. I know and believe wholeheartedly that she's going to work hard and do her best to represent our state. Bethany Kaiser is also looking forward to representing the whole state. The paralegal is from bethel, and she's one of several people I talked to who cried when she heard the election results. I think she really can relate to not just bethel Alaska in general, like all over this state. I think she can really relate to coming from a small town and knowing the challenges that we all face out here. One of those challenges is food security, which popola made a big part of her campaign, and why 77 year old subsistence fisherman John W Andrew had the reaction he did when he heard Paul tola was elected. He gave me the joy. Andrew is from queef luck, a village of about 700 upriver from bethel. Paul tola's mother is from quixel two, and the congresswoman spent part of her life there. 93% of voters in Queen fluck voted for Paul tola. Some years ago, some elder told me I reached the last of the sleeping giant. Our people in this region, a lot of potential. Andrew has worked with the congresswoman on subsistence fishing committees. Committees that are trying to fix a huge problem here. Recently, fewer and fewer salmon have been swimming upstream in the summer in a place where people have relied on the fish for food for thousands of years. Andrew is happy to have someone in Congress who knows just how much of a problem that is. Anything that isn't caught hunted or picked by hand needs to come in by planar barge, driving up prices on the grocery store shelf. To try to restore the salmon population, pelto has proposed stricter bycatch limits on commercial fishing operations. Coming from a small community, she has a lot of culture value and practice in space. To share with all your relatives, what is given to you from the earlier pol tola says she's proud to be yupik, but it's only part of her identity. She says she plans to represent all alaskans as the state's sole House member. My perspective, my worldview is from this region. So I think it will be interwoven into every single thing that I do. Pol tolo will serve the last four months of the late congressman Don young's term. She's running against Sarah Palin again in November to serve the next full two year term. For NPR news

"From NPR news, this is all things considered, I'm Sarah mccammon. And I'm wanna summers. Democrat Mary peltola took her oath of office yesterday and became the first Alaska native in Congress. It is the honor of my life to represent Alaska, a place my elders and ancestors have called home for thousands of years. Got to Congress by beating former governor Sarah Palin and a special election to fill the seat of Republican congressman Don young, who died earlier this year. Nathan McAllen is chair of the Alaska native village corporation association. That's a group that advocates for the success of Alaska natives, and he's here to tell us more about congresswoman Mary peltola and how her election win is being received in Alaska. Nathan, welcome to all things considered. Thank you for having me. It's a pleasure to be here. Congresswoman pill tola is the sole representative for Alaska's residents. So can you just give us a sense of how important this election is to Alaska natives? What have you been hearing from people? It's uniform jubilation. People are feeling all number of emotions that are hard to put into words, but celebrations, sublime, transcendental euphoria, it's really quite a day for us. I have a good friend who starts every conversation with the statement that it's a good day to be indigenous and yesterday was never a truer day to have that applied. As I mentioned, pelto was sworn in to complete the term of Republican congressman Don young, who died in March after serving in Congress for 49 years. How might she represent your state differently? I think she'll have a different perspective, obviously, from congressman young. I mean, congressman young for all of his idiosyncrasies was a beloved figure by many people here. He had been a valiant defender of Alaska natives, congresswoman peltola, bringing a Alaska native perspective is going to see things differently about how development happens here about the tradeoffs between hunting fishing and gathering and the needs on the ground for jobs. She also is going to have a different perspective in that she is coming from a standpoint after a fundamental piece of legislation that changed Alaska. The Alaska native claims settlement act came into existence. Both she and I were born after angst a past. And it anchor was a culmination of a very long process by our grandparents and our great grandparents to fight for our rights. And so I think she understands on an intuitive level that grit and determination matter and so having that hopefulness tied to those notions of perseverance, I think are going to be are going to be a wonderful addition. What is one thing you think that people outside of Alaska should know about Mary peltola as she starts her diamond Congress? She is every bit as genuine and charismatic as she seems. Congresswoman patola really does care about the individual. It really does care about the community and really is genuinely interested in seeing everybody come together in a unified fashion. You've heard a lot of language out of her that she's the congressperson for all of Alaska. And she really takes that to heart. And so she is going to go out there and struggle and fight for and scrap and scrape to get to the things and interests that the people that who didn't vote for her want. And as much as she is for the people that did. Nathan McAllen is the chair of the Alaska native village corporation association. Thank you so much for being with us. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it. Talks continue to avert a massive strike and railroad

"Back and closed primary state pardon. Well, it has been. I'm not sure if they did just change that or not. We've had a lot of elections. Yeah, that's a good variable. Yeah, but that's the big variable there, Mike, is that in a state where you've got a closed primary, you can only vote in the primary if you're registered with a party. That's about half of our students. And so it makes less sense to be an independent in those states because you want to have a say in the party that you care close or you feel the closest to. But in a state that's an open primary state, then there's much less need to register as a Democrat or Republican. You know, I get it. Well, the last time I worked a polls to vote in the Republican Party, you had to be a registered Republican, but to vote anything else you could be registered as anything. But I do think that we have to pay more attention to the issues. And I just, I just wish there were more attention paid to independence because I think we're pretty critical voters. Oh, you guys, you're the people who swing the elections. Yeah. A lot of attention needs to be. It had been a vote. My hit on low information voters is not specifically on people who are not registered with one of the parties. And it's not even intended as a slur or a slam. I acknowledge that particularly people in their 30s and 40s who are trying to raise families and in some cases working two and three jobs and they just don't have time to be involved in politics or keep up with politics. And it's unfortunate. It's unfortunate. And it's unfortunate that Australia has mandatory voting basically. You know, if you don't vote, it's like a traffic ticket. And they have like 97 98% voting compliance. We're around 50 or 60%, depending on the election. But I would like to see people more involved. I would, too, but you want informed voters. I was trying to someone the other day she said she was going to vote for a replacement for Don young because she used to work in an office with this person who's running and she was a nice person. And. You know, when I go, when I vote, if there's an issue about which I'm not informed or I haven't just not as relative to me. I don't vote on that issue because I figure that the people who are more informed on an issue have a better perspective than I have. But so Mike, do you think do you think the Sarah Palin is going to be your next representative? Oh, lord, I hope not. Okay. Mike, I need to move along. It's a great talking with you. And thanks for being uninformed voter. Regardless of party, thank you. Bill and Clifton, New Jersey. Hey Bill, what's on your mind? Too much, I think. I'm looking at the science and it's time to brush up on your quantum mechanics if you can do much more reporting because I've been reading up on the thermoelectric generators or the new breed of them and they're based in quantum science. Are you familiar with the seed deck effect? I'm not. Okay. There's these little modules. I used to buy from my computers 25 years ago, it's called peltier modules. And they're ceramic. And the effect is that if you put power through a conductor to conductors, each one is a different meadow like bismuth and copper or something. It will generate a thermal electric change of 40 degrees difference between one side and the other. So they're used to cool CPUs. But that's old stuff. Now they are doing something based upon if you understand electrons. There's something called spin. And in regular copper wiring, there's a lot of energy that's lost through heat or it's just the electrons are not aligned properly. This technology takes advantage of the spin on the electrons and harvests even more electricity. So instead of having solar panels, you're going to have thermal electric panels that work off the heat being generated, which will last longer than the sun and looking forward to it, though. It sounds great. It's 46 minutes past the hour. You're listening to Tom Hartman, visit Tom Hartman, dot com for

Sarah Palin on Current Campaign: I Have Nothing to Lose
"I mean you changed that whole race I mean it was downhill for them until you got it And after that you became public enemy number one They were determined to rip you to pieces So I think a lot of people me included I really like you a lot personally and professionally You want to do like what inspired you to get back in it knowing you're just this is all coming at you again Because I have nothing to lose President Trump called me a couple of times recently even before I threw my hat in the ring here to replace our unfortunately now deceased representative Don young and when he passed away the seat came open and Donald Trump and I we spoke a couple of times about this that both of us were in the same boat and that's why we've connected We've been friends for many years a connection being that we got nothing to lose It put everything on the line What more can they do to us What more can they say to us About us about our children and that's the worst part of course is a tax on innocent family members But no there's a time and a season for everything And I've been one to preach forever that you don't need a title You don't need an office to make a difference Get out there and fight for what's right But the good guys in D.C. they need some reinforcement So we need more votes and that's why I'm ready and willing and able to get back there and fight for Alaska fight for America and yeah being public enemy number one for a while It just kind of secured even more fully the bond that I have with the president Trump in the key being the real public enemy number one of the bad guys We connect over that

"On Bloomberg television radio I'm David Weston Up in Alaska it's not just the midterms It's also a special election for the seat left open when Republican congressman Don young passed away And the best known of the 48 count them 48 candidates is former governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin Contributors Jeannie chanzeaux and Rick Davis are still with us So Rick you're the expert in Sarah Palin last time I checked The thing that I'm finding interesting is he's best known but I'm hearing a lot from Trump supporters There's at least man on the street person on the street who are saying yeah okay fine we know her but we're not sure she's really Alaskan anymore Yeah you know she's got a love hate relationship with Alaska and since she walked out of the governor's mansion before the end of her term and quit it's been a really rocky road I would say though in a recent poll her fave unfavor is 37 to 51 And she's getting 90% in that same poll of her favorables voting for her So you got a problem where that's really extraordinary to have that many people voting for you out of your faves But it means also that there may not be anybody else left there to vote for you Yeah you know we do have Rick Davis to thank for Sarah Palin So thank you Rick Davis Oh thank you Thank you very much You're welcome And it is interesting Of course this is a crowded field So and they have a new voting system in Alaska So she is absolutely I believe going to get into the top four a name recognition alone I think the real challenge for Sarah Palin is can she get through that second round And that is going to be tough as Rick mentioned because when you have that much support with your favorables she's going to have to really spend time appealing and the word that's coming out of the focus groups and the polling is quitter Alaskans are not forgiving her for quitting the governorship And they're also frustrated that she moved out of state And even people who support Donald Trump and are very conservative and like her politics are having a bit of trouble with the fact that she doesn't seem as committed to Alaska as she did to herself when she quit So I think but it's not something she can't get over I think she can still do it but it's going to be a bit of work on her So Rick that takes us back to JD Vance a little bit and the significance of the Trump endorsement because former president Trump has of course endorsed Sarah Palin Is that going to make a difference up in Alaska Sure it will I mean probably one of the few states that he can have a lot of impact is a state like Alaska that went so far overwhelmingly for him Look it's a GOP state It's a Republican state And one of the other contestants in this race was only about ten points behind Sarah Palin is a Republican running and then the one person between them about 5 points back is an independent and the independence are very strong in Alaska Also Lisa Murkowski basically has become an independent in the state who's one of their senators So I think that it'll be interesting to see how much time Trump has actually helped her because as we know the 11th of June is the primary runoff cutoff where 48 people be on the ballot But then it's only 60 days later that they have what's basically the equivalent of the general election on August 16th And so it does put.
