We talked about Red's fantasy camp, which has been Postpone in 2021 push to 2022 because of covert. But ah, Jack was the manager of my team in 2006 that I played a light on the team with my dad. We were the power Jax. We won the championship, talked about fantasy camps. We talked about Hank Aaron and the home run. He gave up on opening day to Hank that tie the all time record talked about Don Sutton. Hey, talked about Marty Brennaman some really good stuff, and I asked him about his 1973 season. Ray didn't just win 19 games he made 40 starts He had. I think 16 complete games, seven shut outs and he threw 293 innings. He said, Yeah, with Sparky. I don't know how I did that spark. He was Captain Hook. It's in podcast form. 700 wlw dot com Alright? This. This popped into my head on Friday with sadly, the passing of Hank Aaron. And I've been thinking about it ever since. And I thought tonight it was worthy of maybe a top occurs maybe a segment or so with your phone calls, and I've been reflecting on since the start of 2020, the number of baseball Hall of Famers we have lost. Um, alkaline. Tom Seaver. Whitey Ford. Bob Gibson. Lou Brock, Joe Morgan, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, Hank Aaron, and we conclude manager Tommy Lasorda, but nine players Nine players some of the greatest in the history of the game. And I got to thinking about, uh, Justin Amazing scene at Great American Ballpark during the All Star game in 2015. If you remember around that Major league Baseball didn't online vote, where fans had to vote for The greatest player and their team's history. Was a season long campaign up to the All Star break. And from there every team's vote. The 30. Was then presented to the fans for an online vote of the four Living legends, the four greatest living legends in Major League Baseball. Remember that scene when they walked the four out onto the field locked arm in arm? And it got me thinking about this. Hank Aaron was one of the four that night. Great American ballpark. Honored is one of the four living legends. As of right now. Who do we consider? The four greatest living baseball players. That's a hell of a list. I just write off of iconic players that have passed away. Who are the four greatest living baseball players right now. Give you three in a blink of an eye. I could use your help on the fourth. "Since the start of the pandemic doctor Vin Gupta has spent a lot of time since talking about his models, and the death counts that they were predicting. Now that over 400,000 people have died in this country with just over 4000 of those here in Washington, Gupta seemed to vent a little during a Q and a session if we had the personnel in place if we had a focus on preparedness for pandemics That was the focus of our government for years preceding this pandemic that we would have averted the worst of it. I'm convinced that the government's initial doubting of the virus and language suggesting covert wasn't a big deal cost us more than it needed to. It was clear early on that this might have been Airborne respiratory pathogen that was different from other airborne respiratory pathogens, Different Mother Corona viruses, and if we had Uh, the ability to have a national strategy if we had consistent messaging You know, this is not my opinion. This is these are models. But I Jimmy and other institutions to put out suggesting that of say, the 80,000 individuals that died by May 1st. Maybe we could have saved 30 to 40,000 of those If we walk down earlier, that's half of those we lost. Gupta and others say the damage is done. He joined us this past April, and we thought that instead of talking about him about we go back when we talked to him, so in about 20 minutes from now. We will bring this to you The last interview that we did, and that's many interviews over the course of my career with one of my idols. Thank Erin who passed away the age of 86 last five months. Some of baseball's all time greats. Ass away. Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Joe Morgan, Bob Gibson, Don Sutton. And now And Karen will get phone calls as well. 8773 d p show. Email address. TP A damn. Patrick dot com Twitter Handle at DP Show BIG football Weekend We don't have an updated status report on Patrick Mahomes, but I would probably exhale. If I'm a can city chiefs you got a lot of reps in practice and probably will be medically cleared out of concussion protocol at some point today. Now we're more than two days away, so it's plenty of time he's still able to get in his reps. That's what I wondered about during the week. If he was going to be hampered in how much time he would get with the first team offense. Here's something to keep in mind in the regular season. Nobody allowed more completions, too tight ends than the Buffalo Bills did. Travis Kelsey is coming off a record setting year. Just something to file away when we look at that offense, and if you go, I'll be damned. Travis. Kelsey is open all the time. Now. Not that Buffalo is going to go. You know what? We just can't cover a tight end. We'll let him have his catches. They're going to do their best to try to stop Travis Kelsey Easier said than done. But Buffalo surrendered more catches, two tight ends this year than any NFL team and one of the amazing things about the NFL's how closely match these teams are. The lines are hovering around a field goal for both of these games this weekend. And you never know. I always feel like there's one close game. And then there's a blow out so many times of funny bounce a mist past changes, everything and legacies are defined by the thinnest of margins. When you think about Tom Brady He won six Super Bowls. Look how close he was to winning other Super Bowls. Look how close he was to losing Super Bowls. It's a fine line. Because he could have beaten the Eagles. Marie could have beaten the Giants. But then you look back on some of these friendly bounces or Adam Venit Terry with clutch field goals you had you know the tuck game. When that should have been a fumble. They shouldn't even gotten to the Super Bowl. But this is how legacies are built by the thinnest of margins, and I go back to Patrick Mahomes. We're all ready to say it will be one of the great quarterbacks of all time. Go back to the regular season when we thought he dislocated his name go back to the postseason when he was behind against the Texans behind against the Titans. They ended up winning those games in the Super Bowl. He's down 14th quarter. Six minutes to go. Jimmy Garoppolo completes the pass. San Francisco is gonna win that game. Chris Jones knocks it down the slightest of margins there. So you have Patrick Mahomes, Josh Alan going toe to toe. And then, of course, you have Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, a trip to the Super Bowl. Hangs in the balance. I said to Todd, there's a couple people I'd love to hear if they were able to speak about Hank Aaron, the former commissioner, Bud Ceiling, who was a lifelong dear front of Hank Aaron's And also Bob Bucher. I thought that those would be too great people to have to talk about Hank Aaron. And then I said to Fritzi, you know what See if Johnny bench would join us. Because it feels like Johnny's a member of the show. And you know, he also was there he faced on sudden. But, Hank, you know what? Hank Aaron hit 7 14. He was in Cincinnati. And Jack. Billing him was the picture, and I believe Johnny was behind home plate for that home. Run that Hank it and then he goes to Atlanta and then hit the home run off Al Downing 7 15 year Upon a couple years ago, the topic of changing sports names came up and I'm different baseball teams. There's an article written about it. And the Great Atlanta Brave Dale Murphy tweeted out, always felt that hammering Hank had the hammer was one of the coolest nicknames ever at the Atlanta Braves ever consider a name change make it the Atlanta Hammers who As one of the better ideas. If that situation we came to pass I've heard in a while. Yeah. Yeah, I wondered about it, and I think Johnny was behind the plate when when Hank hit that, But I remember that Hank was going to sit out. Then Buoy kun, the commissioner said, No. You're playing in the game. Because Hank wanted to set the record in Atlanta. And so Hank played and then hit the home. Run off, Jack. Billing him. 8773 d P. Hey, Danny, I I sure also don't want toe bring down the mood or anything, but I grew up outside of Atlanta and, um Henry Aaron was my first sports hero and actually got to see him play and Fulton County Stadium and I have had many disagreements with people over the years about who the greatest hitter that ever wasps. Itwas and a lot of them were from Boston, and I said Henry Aaron. Henry and look it up, and I've always appreciated the fact that you championed him. Um So thank you, Danny. And Ah, Sad day, but go hammers. Yeah, um Aye. There's nothing dramatic about him. No, he he lacked flair. But that's not who he was. But he was. You know, in that group with Mickey Mantle on Willie Mays. You can't be any more flamboyant than those guys were the way they played. Hank just went about his business. Hank never hit 50 home runs in a season. Yeah. But back then, if you hit 30 35, you are power hitter. And if you look at the effortless swing of Hank Aaron now there was the launch angle. There was no, you know, you know he was a 300 hitter for his career. Hank had this ability to flip his wrist. He just flicked his wrist. And somehow somebody at that size could hit the ball that far and hit 750 home runs. Let's bring in the hall of Famer Johnny Bench, You went toe to toe. We didn't get into that and always a Dodger. But don was not only great Dodger when he was a great broadcaster to for a long time for the Braves. And I just listen to him a lot. Um This baseball season. I'm not sure why exactly, I did. But I just listen a lot of Braves games and he really, you know some guys image pipes, probably the best at it. Former player turned play by play announcer. Don sudden did the bravos games for a long time. And he was His tremendous broadcaster and his son. We know as a broadcaster Darren and s So not only is brilliant career and he did. He did pitch for the Oakland A's I don't even know. Did he die from covert general? Do they ever say he died? I think they said why he died. I didn't see it. I didn't see it. So he, uh hey was I just heard him and he sounded fine, uh, this this year, and it was mainly 2020 and then into 2021 alkaline, Mr Tiger, Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Whitey Ford. We didn't actually have a bed. I just asked him a couple of weeks ago. Who? I too We thought I thought Karen. She may get a bit Tony clearly is Was slipping a little bit, so having Sarah Thomas eyes going to be and that he had used to be known as the headlines, men Is the position that she has taken on, and they just changed the name of it to down judge, But I don't wonder 11 today will be that Cheryl be elevated from being a down charge to being a white hat to being a referee. And one day we'll have those terrorist. Someone else will be the referee in the in a Super Bowl, but that's great news. That she and this is like an all Star crew. Yeah, the way they picked him. So, Colonel was got the most. You know the best grade for all the referees. Fred Bryan got the best grade for the umpires. Rusty Veins for the line charge. Sarah down, Judge an automatic goes. James Coleman is the field judge. But This is great news for her to be elevated to being a referee. I mean, that that could easily happen. I mean, she's on the crew. But the white hat is the one in charge. And I think that that day is coming, where she will be the NFL's first ever female referee. Why not? Ken Rosenthal had a notes column and by the way, Toronto get to George Springer, but as it was before it was right around. The start of the show was reported that Michael Brantley was gonna be part of the Blue Jays as well. Yeah, we've discussed it. I'm sure that's the head. That's good that they want Joey Barton because they see Possibility and we compare you know why has been to both said a Bard and Wiseman's clearly closer to Bard. Then he has to Bosa as far as a finished product. He's not and Joe he's not I mean, ideally, James, why is going to be playing in the in the college basketball on getting a full suit? Somebody's trying to work it out here. But I'm starting to Sally. Already used the number one pick this past year on a catcher. I've thought about it a lot. Um So his difference between Farhaan and Scott picking up the phone and trying to trade uh, Joey. "How you doing? Pretty good tires for me. The stories don't think it does a great story. Donaldson and I remember, you know, doing the postgame showed. I don't think I'm speaking out of turn, but I would finish doing like, Sometimes I would do the postgame show at the stadium and and on the road games I would do here at home, and I finished up the post game and then down and be like, Hey, Mark, you wanna glass of wine? You know, like you divided Have he had a bottle of wine, and I'm like, Well, it's it's 11 30. I got to get up for TV and three hours, so I'm gonna pass. But he was just such a warm welcoming dude, wasn't it, Dave? I am surprised. You waited too. You're done with the passing show. Nice. You know, The great thing about him is like a lot of your great sports stars. Okay, The guys that you want to be that you meet is a sports on their sports stars. He had a bunch of great stories and he would share with you, and I think everybody who runs into a guy who is a sports guy would love to hear those old stories and diamond just rattling moss for you like, he said. He was, and he was like, That's what made him such a and I didn't know this until I've been starting to read up on some of the obituaries that have come out that as a player he knew he wanted to get into broadcasting after his playing career like that was something he knew he wanted to do. And obviously did. It amazingly, is in the Braves Hall of Fame as a broadcaster. But that was part of the beauty, especially when him and Hay and Pete teamed up on the radio. And you had the professor and you had don weaving these stories in and the unmatched knowledge. I mean, that's just some of the best radio of all time. Yeah, There's some tape out there. I think of Skip doing, uh, interviewing Donna's a player and don telling Skip at the end of his interview that he was going to take skips job with the brave somebody. Wow. That's freeze and they got to work together. And s. So what? How long were you working with? Don Dave. How long were you teamed up with him on the broadcast team? What 10 years 95 the championship year through 2004 and and the French have continued after. Um I know he was very generous, you know, don obviously very well off from a amazing Hall of Fame career talk about some of the generosity saw with him on the road. Oh, my goodness. You know, he treated everybody like a family. If you were his friend he treated you like family off days. You get it set up golf or we all go play golf, and when we don't go on dinner, and we'd all drink wine and it was done could get a table. At any restaurant just by saying Don Sutton and and a baker couldn't get a tee time in almost any course by saying this is Don Sutton. Yeah, when you get there don't make it today. Don DeLillo under the weather. I'm sorry He couldn't make it. But we're still here s O take her, but That's That was the thing. The more you more I thought about it. You know, when I first heard the news, it was like it's too bad. That was Hey. He had not been well for the last couple of years, and you know, that's sad. That's but the more I thought about how he treated my family. Like family made it Saturday Saturday. Saturday was like good grief. During all Star breaks he would take the stones have us down to his spot in Destin. He had a condo in destiny. The whole family would go down to stay with the mayor and the winter every winter For like, seven or eight years. We would he would invite us out to Palm Springs to say this house and play golf. Just have a good time. And it's amazing and a lot of good times ahead, talking to Dave Baker, home of the home fix that you're in the market after the passing of Don Sutton. I remember the one time don legitimately got mad at me, and it's actually kind of funny story, so I don't know if you remember back when Clark Howard was doing afternoon drive. He had a segment with Don Sutton, Right? Don Sutton would come on for a couple of minutes. And and Clark Clark knows football but really doesn't know baseball. So hey asked me is like, Hey, would you mind every morning when you get off TV? Will you just write on an index card? Like 45 questions that I can ask, Don For the afternoon show, so I would do that night, slip it in Christa's mailbox. And so he would have, like legitimately like questions about last night's game or looking ahead, like really good baseball questions because I knew the Braves and remember there's one morning I took off and I didn't write the questions and the next time I saw Don He was like, What the hell is wrong with your questions on Thursday? Do those were the worst questions I've ever you've ever asked me because he knew I was writing for Clark. Apparently they let him know that, like, Don't ask. Don't follow up with Clark because he didn't come up with these questions. Arum did. And I was like, Oh, man, I'm sorry. The morning off. I totally forgot to do it because they were the dumbest questions I've ever had ever heard in my life. I was like, I'm sorry, don, but, uh, he was great and always willing to help out here on the radio to like doing Clark Howard show every night. He loved that He absolutely loved being on with Clark. It was always home late. I gotta deal with Clark in two minutes. And then in two minutes he was so proud. He was a very proud man. Uh, don, citing mark. He was he was proud of being from lower Alabama. In the Pensacola area. He grew up down there. He kind of had a country field to him a little bit, but you go to any of those high schools or rotary clubs down there in Lower Alabama and Pensacola area, he's in the Hall of Fame. I've been to at least four Hall of Fame dinners for Don not counting the Baseball Hall of Fame dinner, but everybody it's anybody in lower album. Oh, yeah, down Suddenly he's on our hall of fame. Oh, yeah. Did you go to school here? No, no, no. But Hey, went down the road there, But he's our home. What? Don as a Hall of Fame player that.
