"And he gets right to the chase. He tells the guy, ISIS non Simpson producer. I'm reading your story, I get this. These guys are rock and rollers and jets. I want to make this movie. We need guys like that, Hollywood. Just balls to the wall. They believe it. They saw it. They're not afraid to make a move that didn't hit just they saw it in their gut. And they did demonstrate they were known as Don and Jerry, they were on a roll. Flashdance cost 7 million and changed the Top Gun was 12 million Beverly Hills cop 14. These things made a fortune. They were the guys who brought the young sexy stars that symbolized the 80s, the music soundtrack. That was big for movies back then. And that was very broad Carmen had a lot to do with the music. But Don Simpson was the guy that knew how to put a story together and would work with the writers, but they would, it was going great. But eventually brought Hummer just since then he was at wits and Brookhaven with sand with Simpson's drug abuse and sexual excesses. Even his friends and his wife were begging and you got to cut loose from this guy. I'm going to take you down with him. And they had the big banner Don Simpson Jerry Bruckheimer films. And then when it really went to shit, a doctor, a friend of Don Simpson, was found dead naked of a drug overdose in the shower, an outdoor shower by the pool at his Bel Air mansion, and that's when Bruckheimer had enough. He said, look the partnership's over. And that's the thing that really messed up Don. He went on a vendor, and that's probably what killed him. Honestly, because one day in 96, he was found dead in an upstairs bathroom in his house. Police said, oh, natural causes all bullshit he was 52. It was heart failure brought on by cocaine. Give me a break natural. Not natural. That was an animal, an animal. But their life together became like a cautionary tale. And once Don went down, Hollywood definitely changed. You had bob Evans not doing much anymore. Don Simpson dying, so movies weren't done the way they used to be done. They weren't done from the gut. They brought people in with NBA's. You know, Don Simpson's thought it as a publicist for Warner Brothers. That's why I think he called me because he had that in his blood. But he always was not comfortable himself. He never felt like he would depress it. He would get plastic surgery. He would go on crash diets, you know, nothing was right for him, even though he had so much success. He even tried to be an actor in the 90s. I mean, he just didn't know what to do with himself. But I like those daredevil outsider guys. "Nobody's more talented. Nobody works harder. Nobody cares more. Nobody wants to entertain an audience the way he does. He's laser focused, he's somebody who doesn't suffer fools well. He wants to make sure he's making the best movie and if people aren't helping to make that movie, we got to find people that are. That's what he loves to be on a set. He's been shooting mission for a over a year now, I think. And that's his, he's got a gift, some actors have it. He's got this gift. In the accuracy and his performance, the way he trained all the pilots for three months, but also his ability to emote and show his pain in the scene with iceman with Val Kilmer. That's the magic sauce of the movie. There's another thing that primarily people in the business will notice, which is that at the beginning of the movie, they see produced by not just Jerry Bruckheimer, but Don Simpson Don Simpson has now been gone for 26 years. That's a quite a tribute. What made you decide to include that and what would Don have made of this moment that you and the film franchise that you guys started are enjoying? Look, we started this thing together, you can't make a sequel without putting his name on it. I mean, a lot of the magic of that first one was came out of his brain. His energy, again, we pitched it what happened initially is we developed a script and the powers that paramount at the time didn't want to make it. So we had the script. We loved for the original from the original and they didn't want to make it because there was a TV series that Greg Nelson, I think, was in it. My memory is correct. About the air force and it tanked. So the wisdom was that nobody cares about aviators. They left the studio and Ed ten and comes in. And he says, what do you guys have? And so we have this thing Top Gun, Tony Scott. And he said, okay, come by the House and pitch me the story. So we go up to his house and remember exactly where it was, but so Tony's with us. He just got off a plane from London and he's just sunk. So Ned turns to him. Tell me the story. All Tony was doing with petting his dog. And so Don jumps in and just spun a tail. I don't know if anywhere close to the movie he made, but he certainly dazzled Ned and as we walked out and he said, I don't know if this guy could direct. I know he can pet a dog, so I'm coming on YouTube. Oh man. How about just one other crazy thing? You and now, almost 50 years in filmmaking, right? Have been recognized in a lot of ways. I know there's the star on the Walk of Fame and I think the Anne prince footprints and different NATO national association of theater owner, honors and things like that. One thing that has not yet happened is an Oscar nomination. Is that something that you would mean something to you? Of course, you all always want to be rewarded for your work.

"The best way to do things kind of absorb information by being around people that are very smart. Just working with Schrader, Michael Mann, again, that shows my ability to understand talent to seek these people out, give them an opportunity and they both going on to have fabulous careers and we've done it over and over again. Totally. So I mentioned the name Don Simpson. I guess for eternity, YouTube will be linked together. How did you two first cross paths? I met him coming in a screening of the harder they come. My ex-wife was a secretary for the head of music at Warner Brothers and a guy named Joe Boyd. And Joe was very close friends with Don Simpson. So Bonnie, my ex-wife introduced me to Don. And that's how we first met. Now at that time done, I know at one point he was the president of production at paramount was he already transitioned at that point into just producing her. He was still in that job. No, he was a publicist. Oh. At Warner Brothers. Okay. And after when I got divorced, he had a big house in Laurel canyon, and one of his roommates had moved out. So I moved in to the house and he was up for a job at paramount. And he borrowed my sport jacket because his room was a mess. He was the kind of guy that would have piles of books, phenomenal vocabulary, study vocabulary books, and it was an avid reader. So he had to step over the books to find his clothes. And he didn't have a clean sport jacket, so I was there and gave him the sport jacket. And he dazzled the people at paramount because of his vocabulary. He's a really, was a brilliant man, and he really could express himself. And he talked about BT barnum. He could really spin a tail. So I guess then that was what led to that time was the beginning of the president production. Period for him there, then he goes solo as a producer there. And it's interesting I've read, I wasn't covering the beat at that time, but eisner katzenberg, Don Steele, that era of paramount. Who decided that you and Don should maybe not just be Friends, but actually work together, I guess, for the first time. Various people take credit for it. But I went to him and after he was just left paramount. And I said, why don't you produce this movie with me and see how it goes? And he said, yeah. And this was flashdance.

"What's the deal with Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, opposite tractors or cynical moves to boost their careers? You know, no, I was close to these two for a season and a half coach in football. And I coach Gwen's son and our Gavin rossdale was there as well. On the other side of the field, most of the time, but Gwen was always the good mom. And Blake came to the games, and man, they were stone cold in love. Like they couldn't stop touching each other and look at each other and they like high school kids. Must be terrible for Gavin rossdale to look across the field and see that. But I know the kids all love Blake. He doesn't have that dark energy Gavin has. And the first Daven has that background of dating a guy for a long time and trying to act like he didn't know. It's a famous story about an English an English person that he dated that was kind of a trans character. Forget the name right now, but it's got a dark history with rock and roll. You know, and Blake is not that way. Blake is a down home. Southern rock guy. You know, he likes to do his thing and drink his beer and have a back barbecue. I don't see there being anything cynical about it. It just really Gwen needed a breath of fresh air and, you know, sometimes marriages just get stale and I'm not saying I think they look good together. I think they're a little weird together. But I think this will last the test of time for a long time. I don't think once the fan will be alone again. I think Blake stays with her. Yeah, I

"The hurt on fox portrayed of the iheartradio app. There's a my friends you know david our friend. Who else did we have earlier who we have earlier. Who is eddie house right. I mean eddie houses. A friend like you have a conversation. And it's kind of what we what i try and do a my show. The doug gottlieb show is daily three to six eastern pacific. I also have the all podcast. Which is hoops but but stories about basketball guys. Upbringing all kinds of different stories on there. And what i try and do a little different than other people is share. You're listening to a conversation. Like me and david thorpe. That it's two guys that understand the sport no a lot of other things. Go on and you're listening in on that. That's kind of the idea of that sort of interviews like you're listening to a conversation legally right not like illegally in a two party state sharing where one person says something about another person which is racially divisive and causes an entire network to look completely terrible. No no this is listening. A sports based conversation. So what we what i try and do is like hey. The inside of sports looks different than the way. It's portrayed and there's a reason there's a logical reason behind people always ask. Why don't you guys talk about well. There's there's a way in which the metrics are developed like. Why do we talk about like lebron and brady and the yankees. And the usc in alabama and like more people have an opinion and care about those things than stories that may actually matter more stay. They may actually more inside the sport. I am fascinated fascinated by how name image and likeness changes and evolves college basketball. Some i've covered some i played. I have friends that coaching it. I'm fascinated by it i. I don't think it's great. Sports radio kind of share that with you additionally some of the things that really go on like really go on you. Don't i think the way in which most people see the world is you thought. Name image and likeness. You like. Oh that means all the big top all the all. These football players are getting paid like. Yeah that's not. Actually what's going to happen. Yeah the quarterbacks they'll get they'll they'll get some names like the stuff and they'll be some other stuff that trickles down but the people that actually have a value in named like this are people that are on the graham. They might be good. Athletes are just attractive right. That's it or they've had a social media following since ever like eight years old and they started doing dribbling stuff and now they've you know matriculated up. So i bring that up. Because what you think about certain quarterbacks in the like we mentioned the best quarterbacks in the nfl who the names that we're going to mention pat homes. Aaron rodgers russell wilson. Tom brady right. And then there's a bunch of other ones like you know there's two shawn watson there's a who a lot of people love some people like i know i've talked to some of them. There's the look here's a maybe a better example to this day. I will get message on instagram or twitter. Whatever like anything you said that That george kittle is not a blocker. Say he's not but again part of that is. I apparently done a poor job of sharing. That was on colin show. We were talking about rob gronkowski rob gronkowski's the only star pass catching tight end that you could leave head up with a tap defensive end and not fear for your quarterbacks life george kill does a good job of blocking within their scheme. He's not a blocker he's to pass catcher who has totally bought into being a blocker. The best blocking tight ends in the nfl. You have never heard of them. Do you know why. Because they don't catch passes those are blockers. Okay so this was. Kyle shanahan on the flying coach. Podcast expressing his disappointment in missing out on trading for matt stafford. I was trying to get involved in it so when who has knowledge in this situation i'm arrest talking to condon's everyone to find out when it was happening and i remember. Saturday was so stressed out and finally we talked to. Someone was like seven at night and they're like no. Nothing's happening at the earliest tomorrow. So you can your night. So mike all right. I'm just telling you if you want stafford meaning to get a hold of him right now what you mean. I like no. We just talked to people. I can sleep on this. We'll talk tomorrow. I'm just telling you need to talk to right now. In totally a and then i was all over the map when when you have. Sean mcveigh and college. Hand to the elite young offensive. "NPR and Adele Channing In the L word part of a new project. A podcast called Don And it's about the life and times of Don Simpson, the filmmaker. You never were in any of his films so maligned. What drew you to this project in the first place? Highly good morning. Yeah, I was never in any of his films. I was quite small and when he was producing his big eighties classics like Flashdance and Beverly Popgun But of course I knew of his movies. And, you know, they just find that decade and find Ah lot of my childhood memories come from the music and the clothes that were all coming from his brain. He really epitomized what the eighties were all about through those movies. So when the producers came to me, they pitched it as Every night. Make wolf of Wall Street right, and I immediately got it. I got the world I thought And and then you know if you look David Harris Klein, the writer in the Deep does That's an incredible job of researching it and presenting it in this really unique way, and I was attracted to that because we don't do it is just a straight documentary podcast. If there's a mix of narration and fictional reenactment, it's sort of like a drunk you drama like you see on the TV series like the Crown or American Crime stories, the For sake series, for example. We're re creating it. And we're creating this world and as an actor, I was really attracted to that. Um, that is a chance to kind of create this world for the listener. And really explore his talent, but also his demons. You know, because ultimately his demons his addictions killed him. They did. I know his films because I've seen every one of them. They were kind of their kind of liking and I That was my era. That's when I was, you know, high school and college And so I remember the first one I saw was Flashdance. First of all, not withstanding falling an absolute love with Jennifer Beale. Um how the way he shot them. They were almost extended music videos. Yeah, Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And you know, nobody was doing this at the time. It was now You know, the big blockbuster, we get it. We know what we expected. But this would he Woz, the first Do this and do the big, high concept. Movie and to do these real star vehicles. I mean, he made so many stars in top gun and, you know, I'm crews that Eddie Murphy Yes, Speaking of Flashdance, I You know you mentioned my work on the L word earlier and I then you know as a When I was on the L word I worked with Jennifer Beals. Talk about talk about, you know, going. I mean, at my job was on the floor E. I want so much last dance when I was younger. Well, imagine so. And I was gonna ask you if, if his if his name ever No, his. His name didn't because this is you know, this was years ago before the dawn, And there's before podcasts or even a thing right to test our new thing, And I'm so is my first time working in the face and it's It's been such an amazing experience, but no, it never came up. But of course his he didn't help. But flash dance, of course, came up because I was a huge fan, and he's just really intense. We're talking about Don Simpson, the movie creator who is featured in the podcast, the Don Malaya, Rivera drew hosts it. She's an actress on her own, and he did. Malaya seemed to have a grip on what the American public wanted for entertainment in that era. I would contend unlike today because lovely wife and I just finished four movies in a row. That were highly acclaimed by the Golden Globes and the Academy Award, and I found the movies to be kind of Dorje like they didn't have a good middle. They didn't have a good beginning. They didn't have a good end. But his movies all had that. Yeah, Yeah, he you know, there's a lot of, um, kind of focused put on His life and his boy Bols and also the flash of his movies, write the music and the clothes and because that stuff that we kind of immediately remember but point his storytelling, you know he worked with Um, the really incredible writers and he was exacting. Um, so it's not just that their big, flashy movies these movies, you know them were hit for a reason, because they do have You know, incredible structure and storytelling. And then he brought in all the creative elements on top of that, But it starts with the story, which she was, You know, he had a real nose for He did the don Don Simpson, the movie creator. You know him from his movies like American Gigolo of Flashdance, Top Gun and his Rise and Fall in Hollywood. All chronicled with Malaya Rivera drew in the podcast the don, which is available on the I Heart radio happen everywhere you get podcasts. Um, was the groovy eighties lifestyle, his undoing or was that later? Well. Um It was, you know both. I mean, I think he's on doing was Like what was underneath his groove. You like that? I mean he Yeah, right. Isn't that always the way it was? What's underneath he come and we get into it more in season two. Past his childhood. What he's kind of running from and what he is masking with all the partying and all the pills. Ondo. So obviously he was working and living in a world you know, Hollywood and sort of the lifestyles of the rich and famous that kind of supported that behavior, But I think wherever he was, I mean, it could come from that kind of trauma. You know it. It wasn't gonna end well, and it really he poured a lot of that into his filmmaking, And that's why there was such an urgency and such a passion for film. Um, I think it saved his life and then ultimately came with a lot of Trappings that ultimately killed him. They say about Don, you know, One of my favorite quotes is that he lived for the movies on dull timidly. He died for them. She played Adele Channing on the L Word and Katey Alvaro on er she's hosting the podcast the don about Don Simpson, the movie creator Malaya. Rivera drew, you're used to acting, um Unless you've done Ah lot of voice work. Was this a different project for you? Yeah, It was a different project for me. Um, but I think you know it's all about Very telling. And so I loved getting to tell this story in a long form way, and what I liked about it is that we didn't do like a straight documentary. We mixed it up. So we did narration and the fictional Rien document reenactment. So it was really creating a world like you do on a TV series or a film. That all felt super familiar to me, but, um, but, yeah, it was my first time in the podcast base. I really liked it. I really loved Hosting. I also play one of the characters, which felt more, you know, comfortable and familiar for me. The vocal talent on the podcast is through the roof. I mean, we've got some great actors on there. But it's you know, it's something that's happening more and more. There's the podcast space is super exciting, and there's all these big actors that are moving over into it because I think it's just another way to reach people on to tell these stories. And the pandemic didn't hurt either. Oh, my God. This is a great thing to do during the pandemic. You know, we said the likes to the actors and we, you know, big segment and it was It was a really Great way to tell a story and to keep working when everything was shut down. For sure. The podcast is the don. It is about Don Simpson, the filmmaker. It's hosted by Malaya. Rivera drew In season one where you get into some of some of his enter workings. Is there one incident or anecdote of about him that sticks out in your brain? Yeah, There's a bunch. I mean, So this win this one really kind of held you who don Woz and the persona that kind of party Playboy persona that he created. Um, to mask a lot of his inner pain.
