But i'm in listen. We're recording this. It's it's nearing the end of the pando. We're all just like grasping at straws trying to figure out what to do with our lives next vaccine relaxed. What am i saying. Let's just. Oh my i'm like having a bridge it's beautiful. It's it's truly excellent. Let's jump in. And if you feel like putting on your video at any point feel free listeners. Just know that julia's wearing an excellent jumpsuit. So any she looks phenomenal so we are in bill homestretch of our last five of this version of our podcast and were so excited. Because you've already heard our guest today. So let's just bring them into the room. We have the one. The only former show runner executive producer writer. Man-about-town mr mike scully. Hi everybody make things. She joined the show at so my pleasure where super radio on this we. 'em it's so nice to be a part of something that you're such a well oiled fuck you. You're in our house and so we had you on. The previous iteration of our show was called. Everything's coming up springfield and that was a very fun time because you were convinced that you wouldn't be able to fill up like are hour long episode talking about one episode and so you picked two episodes and you found. We're pretty chatty. So we're able to make a meal out of anything so but it's great to have you back in so today we really want to Chat a little bit about The simpsons should you choose but really we want to just chat about the other aspects of your career and some of the things that you're the most proud of as well as some of the things that maybe never even saw the light of day because that's always a lot of fun. We want to dig up the pilot graveyard today. Want you to ruined some. Nda's we want some bridges now. Whatever you're comfortable with. I'm opening up my i don't want to forget you. You really don't forget anything i think. That's a great testament to so many wonderful failures. So you've you've been on many podcast. And so i'm sure a lot of the people who listen to our show. Listen to the shows you've been on but if you wouldn't mind starting somewhere along the earlier part of your career and and you know i think when you were on last time we actually talked about some of the Stand up comedy that you did. I think yakov smirnoff came up but if you kind of get us into the always comes up. He three times but if we could start somewhere earlier into the career pre simpsons any of the projects that are particularly greater particularly cringe. He will leave that up to you. If you could. Just choose a project that we could start to dive into all right. We did y'all last that we probably talked about what a country which is my first staff job because that was a show that started you off and don not so we can jump ahead one too. I mean it is. It is pretty hard to say. Let's leave don knotts. I mean at that to hear more about that. Oh i don knotts was amazing in. I was going to say in the first season of what a country but there was only one he. He was brought in about halfway through the season. It was a twenty six episode season. He was brought in to replace another actor and he became like if the show is about a night. School like english as a second language class For recent immigrants and so don not was brought in as a new principal of the night school and that was a huge thrill for made for the audience. Went crazy. the first time they saw it was a live audience. Show and for me. It was just gigantic. Like i stopped caring about the show and all we wanted to get to know now. Did you tell you any crazy. Hollywood tales while you were working with them not so much. A crazy chelsea gave a lot of really good career advice. There was a lot of very sound almost fatherly away. Like never leave job till you have the next one lineup. Because he these were based on like he was kind of giving the wisdom of mistakes he thought he had made in his career. So don't don't leave till you have another job lined up. And he was just so much fun to work with us. A total perot. He would get out there and at like. I said the audience would go nuts. Every time they saw. I was constantly asking him questions about. Obviously andy griffith but also like his movies. Don knotts was a big movie star and the sixties a very unlikely movie star and he made like five or six movies where he's the lead now like yeah like the ghost and mr chicken The incredible mr lebed the shakiest gun in the west. My dad showed me the love. God when i was like nine years old and i don't know if he intended for me to not have any friends on the playground to relate to anybody but like i was by far the only kid who was like. Y'all haven't seen the love. It's the guy from the apple dumpling gang. That's why he went to school together..

"True but it's like the monkey's paw you pay a price for it right. I guess but that's ideas within the monkey's paw paul's most important to you in the monkey's paw the there's an un expected consequences so like there's this story of jeannie. Jeannie visits a man who has a tiny dick and the guys like. I wish my penis was bigger and the genie's like well okay young man i will grant your wish. What and he's like. Yeah i want my dick to touch the floor. And so the next day the guy wakes up and his feet are really short. And i'm like okay. Let's let's this is wonder woman nineteen eighty-four logic. The man asked the genie for a bigger dick. The genie just heard whatever he wanted to hear and and fucked him up you know then give him what he wanted to punish the guy for desiring things. And that's what i feel like rich people in the hollywood have the idea on the rest of americans. They're like we wanna punish you for wanting to be happening because we're secretly miserable and so when we make a movie that is trying to illuminate the human condition of desire. We understand what desire is because we have all the money we have all the power we have all the resources in the world. We can do anything literally like you know. Hollywood does this point can generate the mandalorian out of thin air with cgi like it. So good that literally. The only limits their imagination their ability to write compelling scripts and characters and so when hollywood is making this movie that's about desire and wishes all they just think is like yeah humanity just wants power and talking and money and tits and you know more power more power and i'm just like oh my god you guys don't get it you gotta completely wrong. I think the the better way of thinking about desire and one movie. That's really good about. Is the incredible. Mr limpet starring don. Not what. i haven't seen that movie in thirty years. You remember that movie. So donald child don knotts and his buddy our sailors on vacation and for some crazy reason. Don knotts is broken heart or something. And he's looking at the watering and he sings a song. I wish i were a fish. And i guess fate grants his wish and he becomes this fish and helps to end world war two by basically trying to use. What are those called the missiles that submarine shoot torpedo paedophiles using his body to deflect the torpedoes and point them at german and japanese boats. And to me. It's such a ridiculous premise. But you know in the movie like don. Knotts has to reckon with the fact that he got his wish. Come true and it came with unexpected consequences and you get a very lonely. Does fishy wife. the fish literally. Thanks for being fast. She'd of fast dan nuts. And so you know. I think like even like rick..

A Vote on Impeachment

"You know I think for dancy and first shift and again it's so problematic it's a political issue when you have that it is a a bipartisan vote not to impeach the president and what it shows is that it shows up for the last three or four weeks the Democrats have been running this rogue process where they've given Adam Schiff so much power in the intelligence committee not even in the Judiciary Committee word should reside and that at the end of the day there is no crime it is there is no crime and the fact is the president's been incredibly transparent and it just shows that these Democrats have been obsessed with the president hating him from day one and we all know what their political playbook words which was to impeach the president yeah ABS absolutely but I guess is so it's only as he is a good thing that what they've done because now they're saying it's going to be public but we know that I'm shift can take what he wants behind closed doors so is this a good thing or bad let me go through this vote so for the impeachment of of Richard Nixon they got four hundred and ten votes and Democrats in an overwhelming house Majority that's how serious the Richard Nixon's crimes were at the very beginning of the process four hundred ten votes folks for Bill Clinton it was over three hundred sixty if it was three hundred sixty three votes that lots of Democrats voted for because bill Clinton's meat to crimes were serious so you know the idea that they couldn't get any Republicans to vote for this this shows you what a scam this is nineteen minutes after the president was elected on election night mercy are actually at the party of the New York City on election night what a crazy night nineteen minutes after the man's to clear the president Democrats are already going on the national ways and saying this is an illegitimate president he didn't win legitimately they accused him of not being legitimate when he said he would say that Hillary wasn't going to be the legitimate press this is a scam and here's the thing for Democrats if they think that bill that it's wrong to leverage foreign countries over the foreign aid we give which we probably shouldn't be giving them yeah if we can't leverage them to stop corruption what is it for a second of all if you want to impeach Donald Trump for leveraging the governor if you crave I'm sorry Democrats then you have to say that Biden should have been impeached too because he leverage them on national television yeah to help his son so they're in a hell of a pickle brother power junkies they're chasing their next hi there like they need the power back Mercedes Slappy at being on the front campaign when we talk about impeachment all this energy around we're gonna be struck how good has that been for the trump campaign fundraising it's been spectacular the president mentioned he did an interview with Washington examiner where he said this is energized my base I mean we've been able to raise millions of dollars just even from small donors because they're so mad yeah they're so mad that the Democrats would spend more time I was asking for subpoenas and they are packed in acting laws everything about it six subpoenas and they've only on active on laws that's insane it's a do nothing Democrats it's a do nothing Congress it's why we need to reach yeah the integrity in Congress every time it comes back every time Adam Schiff stepped up to the microphone you're saying the truck giving like printing cash that is absolutely right so Adam should should just go up with the T. shirt that says on each tribe and then the base and our young guys could call madam ship all you want but yet some of these guys are was our old like me and I remember don Knotts I see Adam Schiff I see eighty Griffin side I'm sorry but he are okay they all do here's here's the thing he's running the intelligence committee you know what that their job is is to look at the sensitive national security questions to protect us and instead of doing that this committee is doing the job of the Judiciary Committee which basically means the Democrats could care less about our

C. broadcast standards that maybe scrappy was a bad role model for the kiddos he was in one person in that department actually use this term to ME two independent. the network also thought scrappy was too rebellious. mainly I pointed out that scrappy as written was ineffectual character. things that he got things done always eventually for the better our hero Scooby and shaggy fled from danger panic hit trouble Dick center if they contributed to the resolution of the problem in catching the villain it was only by accident we crashing into them why I asked do you want that to be a role model and that scrappy interviewers should emulate. that seemed good enough for standards who allowed scrappy to be left as it is scrappy did exactly what he's supposed to do he got Scooby doo renewed for another season. so it falls into the that falls into the old category like what do you do when a TV show it might be on its last legs always bring a cute kid. so they even did that here scrappy doo is the equivalent of all over on the Brady bunch. yeah bring in the keep bringing the cute kid. so. how about this Jody foster's voice appeared in an episode of the new Scooby doo movies. guest stars and became a part of the new iteration of Scooby doo from the Harlem Globetrotters to don Knotts. and in the nineteen eighty S. seventy seventy two episode ninety seven two up sort of Wednesday is missing a pre taxi driver Jodie foster supplied the voice of Pugsley Adams. in Addams family Scooby crossover episode. You can hear him and it's just a tapping the now I've seen these things in the water and the huge and we had a guy at the marina, one point to a couple of summers ago who worked there just for the summer and he had a spear, and he would spear those things and then throw a bump on land. He said you can kill him. He said they, they're invasive species. You're supposed to kill him. Anytime you get a chance to, but they're everywhere, and they're and there and you can hear them all tap in to what it's like they got, you know, and I think it's a car, that's you know, that's what I've been told you remember the movie with Don Knotts incredible, Mr. limpet, you know, when he fell in the water, and then it became a fish, any of the cartoon fish had those lips. Looks like it looks like Mr. limpid down there. And but they suck on the bottom, and assume there's eating algae, some people say that they can damage your boat. But when we had ours, hold out, you know, they said that the bottom looked fine, of course a week later. Let's valentine. Problem just that big carp hole. I keep hitting the Mike today. And he says, I think one of the ironies today is that people are saying that it's President Trump. That's treading, our institutions. I really see no evidence of then from my perspective, the idea of resisting a democratically elected president and basically throwing everything Adam, and, you know, really changing the norms on the grounds that we have to stop this president, then is where the shredding of our norms, and our institutions is occurring. That does not bode. Well for Mr. struck I wouldn't think. We'll be back. We'll talk to you in just a few stay with this information,.

Tim Conway a comedy legend passed away yesterday at the age of eighty five and we lost a true comic genius. And a true comic giant. Who was so funny for so many so many years on television, and in the movies he made a series of movies as we mentioned with Don nuts to Disney movies called the apple dumpling bang gang in the apple dumpling dumpling gang rides again. But he also did another other two that were really really really funny one was called private is. And it was him and Don Knotts doing like, a kind of a Sherlock, Holmes and Watson thing and then. The other one was called the prize fighter. And they were both. They were both really hilarious movies. They were early eighties early eighties films. The apple dumpling gang late seventies. But the private is in the prizefighter were both early eighties. And they were hilarious because he he done. That's we're fantastic. The other they were Larry together. But, you know, most of the work that we remember Tim Conway for involved television. You know, especially on the Carol Burnett show, if you guys want to jump in.

Tim Conway is name was. Thomas daniel. Or Tim Conway? Actor writer director. He portrayed the incident. Parker in the nineteen sixties World War Two situation. Comedy comedy Mikhail's navy? Carol Burnett show, of course, co star with Don Knotts in the few movies in the seventies and eighties like the apple dumping dumpling gang. Apple dumpling, gang rights, again think those two together right there. To the great brilliant comedians. Not so much just what they said. But what they did the look on their face their expressions on their face when you watched on nuts. It was so much about Don Knotts express with the karate chops and just the big bulging eyes. It was Tim Conway's way of being sort of submissive and sort of cut a clumsy and. Together. I remember the kid we go to the drive in movies. My parents take us the drive in movies would see the dumpling gang. And they were so good together. And they were such innocent movies. And it was hard to figure out who do you look at the time. You look at Don Knotts, or do you look at Tim Koller because they're both so funny whether expressions you to Joe Michaels, I'm doing well back a memory from my childhood, which which part just apple dumpling apple dumpling drive in who went to the the local mall's theater local mall. "There. Trust me on this. Just stay. It's all dates. It's seven o'clock in the morning till four thirty in the afternoon. I was dismissed around two thirty. But is that normal is every week? So yeah, they said you gotta stay down there from seven forty five when the door opened the doors until four thirty they expect you to, but, but I mean, I was gone by two thirty quick question that I left at about eleven before lunch. By the way, that's on jury duty. You're you're a suspect. So let get released. You've fortunately won the case. Why can't you just check in on the phone the night before I do and they always say come on down. But you know, what they did to me last time. They said I could check in online. If you go online and do your right? Your pre jury up. Yeah. You've got to do the you've got to watch a video. It's like five to ten minutes, or whatever it is. And then you just check in online until the online system tells you you gotta go in. Well, they told me I can check. I can do my online course. And then I don't have to show up at some point five I can show at nine thirty right? And so I I go the night before to do the course. And it says you gotta do it a week in advance. They never told me that still wouldn't have done it. But they didn't tell me that. But I I'm tempting to just rip up that summons jury summons and and gamble. Don't know. Don't gamble that. They're not gonna knock on my door. But see the problem is that when you drive around, and you know, you do a California stop some cop gets you. You're gonna you're a big fish? After you make an example out of ya. They're not I've done a enough for the boys. I think I could give me a look the other way once once in a while, maybe not maybe not that's possible. I was working over the FM talk station and a couple of friends of mine detective Rudy Alvarez LAPD. And detective I think it was a captain by then Andy Harare. But our buddy Malibu, Dan said to detective Rudy. Hey, if I'm if I get busted for we'd will I be will you look the other way, and he had a great line. He said you don't become a detective with LAPD by looking the other way. And he says will I be treated like a celebrity in jail. And he says, no, sir. You will not be treated by. I don't think celebrities get special treatment anymore, right? Like, if you're like, let's say you're Don Knotts, right? And I, you know, you get a arrested for something you think he'd be treated special or I know is not with us anymore. But I mean, or would they say, you know, he's just in with the regular crowd. I think they get treated don't they? Don nuts would Don Knotts probably will love him and the cockpit arrested. Don Knotts is probably going to hear it from the other cops. Rested. Don. Rested. Barney fife what did he do? He had worn out for his arrest. I guess he had a couple of parking tickets and you arrested him for that. Yeah. Oh, man. Yeah. Barney fife. That was pretty good. I was really good. Yup. It's sort of like Seinfeld like the early side Seinfeld. Week in his voice. I bet. I'll bet Seinfeld was a big Don Knotts fan. Abedi was one of the the guys that that he will turn to that was a huge fan of Donald celebrities. Pay a little extra cash and go do their time over in El Segundo or something like that or seal beach offers to. Yeah, I think it's one hundred bucks a day or one hundred ten bucks a day, and you can go into a little private prison and serve your time there. Oh, they're actually I just looked up. Seinfeld. Don Knotts, and I think he is Don Knotts fan because on one of the Seinfeld opens for the for the show. He's doing the. Yeah. Pulling the belt up like. I see what's going on here. Don, Knotts was absolutely the best. My my dad said that everything he ever does in comedy he stole from Dan nuts. And that's true or not. But certainly out there. Yeah. "And from PRI public radio international. My name is Tom power. So we're just over a week into the new year. And if this one week has proven anything so far it's that you really can't predict what's going to unfold in two thousand nineteen right off the bat week one behemoth rhapsody wins at the Golden Globes. You know, the one thing you can safely forecasts perhaps is that we're going to need at least some comedy at least a laugh or two to get through the year and cliff Nesterov has a few ideas on where we might find him cliff nester off as a comedic comedy historian, author of the book the comedians. Drunks thieves scoundrels and the history of American comedy. And he's here to share a few picks for who he thinks is due for a big year in the comedy world. Coming up the sort of up and coming comedians. You might wanna keep an eye on in twenty nineteen cliff joins me from beautiful Nelson, British Columbia high cliff. Hey, Tom, so when it comes to comedy, obviously everyone's talking about. Louis C K and his attempt at a comeback right now. But that's not really what you're interested in doing today. Right now, I'm a little bit exhausted. By all the Louis CK stuff, in fact before his scandal. I was already exhausted by the fact that he had been anointed as the God of comedy. And it was just wall to wall media coverage magazine covers in the popular press. Kind of goes through these phases where they focus on one comedian for sort of a obsessive amount of time. It was Dave Chapelle for a while. Then Louis CK than Amy Schumer, and I feel it's to the detriment of a lot of comedians who deserve more exposure. So I wanted to share with you some of my favorites who who really deserve to be seen and heard. So let's talk about some of the comedians. You think we should be talking about you put together a list of comedians for us that you think will do great things in two thousand nineteen the first is a great comic name. Mcdonagh her here. He is in action. My buddy went away for a weekend. And he asked me to watch his hamster died. I feel so bad. I didn't know what to do the best. I think of I went out and other hand handily just like that one. I have no idea. Why thought that was gonna work? He's going to be fooled by two dead hamsters. My friend is very competitive. He's one of those guys he always asked to try it out. No matter what like I went to Canada. So he went to France, I went bungee jumping. So he went skydiving. It's so much. I'm thinking about getting in a minor car accident. That's Madonna her one uplift Nestor offs pigs for comedians into watching twenty nineteen cliff. What are you love about Matt Donna her? Well, man is just pure funny. That was an audio clip, obviously. But he looks funny. He sounds funny. And he is funny, and there's very few people in comedy that are just pure comedy in that sense. Don Knotts was sort of like that back in the day. You know, he was funny to look at. He was fighting with the sound on sound off. Donna is sort of like that. He won the Seattle comedy competition a little while back. Matt Don who Don Knotts and made some waves at just for laughs and has done the coroner O'Brien show. So he's out there. But he deserves wider exposure, I see him as sort of in the tradition of people like IMO Phillips and Steven Wright and Mitch Hedberg just funny for your next big is a woman named Andy Ericsson. She's a stand up comic based in New York. Let's take a listen to a little bit of her act when I was younger, I grew up in a theme park. The part was trailer. Nerdy. Friends can be great. But sometimes they can be super annoying,.
