"I don't care about my mask. Thank you. Ben, Greece. Andres Kid now as a mask for road hockey. Probably. Or he kept it on the the man gave as a memento of that that encounter so anyway, but instigators noon to one Tuesday through Friday during football season, So make note of that, and, uh yeah. So Lots of hockey talk to get to because you know what? You have training camp coming up. We're going to do everything we can to try not to mention the situation that we've been talking about a lot. We're not going to talk about it today or not. We've talked about it every day. Was going to put that one on ice for a little bit until maybe we get closer to training camp. However, Marty, you were here for the first half of the signings. We'll talk about today, but not the second and Craig, Miss both. But last week As Craig left us all hanging for most of the week. Yoki hard You a middle sat sign Rive Middle stat sign first and both of them three years 2.5 million. What do you think of the deals? Well, I had, uh, when we were talking about, um Casey, Middle Stat. You know my my number that and listen, I'm no GM. I don't pretend to be or actually, I do pretend to be you were actually every day it all back. I take that all back. I messed up. I pretend to be a GM, which Quite frankly, have no knowledge and I was I had said to you. Two year deal at 1.75 and This is a three year deal, which means that you're going to have to pay. Um, player a little bit more to have a longer contract. When I look at this, or you're only paying them a little bit more. If you think he's going to gradually get better. Yes. So that's why you're giving them more in the third year. Yeah, and and listen. I mean, Casey, Middle stat. Showed. In the 27 22 games, or how many games that he played under Don Granato that he was given given an opportunity, and he seized that opportunity. I think he had, uh, 17 points in 22 games under Don Granado. He flourished, He could show that he had signs of of taking the next step. So when you look at this, locking down a 22 year old player that it shows signs that he's going in the right direction. This is a great deal because they still own his rights for a couple years. After No, I think you're absolutely right. I think you're absolutely right. And I think this is one of those. We see those deals happening now, more and more where you're paying on the promises and a young guy that Well. He could be a 1.71 point $8 million player. But if is town comes through and the prospect of Casey Mental stat is definitely that then he can get you 45 points maybe this year. What's the 45 point? Uh, player? That's four million Right. So now you're underpaying KC. Mittal sat for a couple of years because he's a 45 point player scores 15 20 goals and he's making only 2.5 million. Listen now, But if you if he doesn't and he's supposed to be just at $1.7 million player, it's only 800,000 like, come on. It's not That big of a deal on your salary cap, and they needed to spend the money anyway. Just throw that in there. I mean, they have the room. How about that? How about this? I mean, You know, this young man played 22 games. Okay under Don Granado had the opportunity to play. He was given power play. Can't penalty killed the end of the game. He he did everything and he responded. He had 17 points. You know Katie Middle Stat in 41 games last year. Yeah, I had 10 goals in 22 points. Yeah, he was on pace for 20 goals and 44 points. And yes, That's because Kruger Ralph Krueger did the worst bloody job in the history of frigging coaching on some of these players. You got just Skinner playing on the friggin fourth line with two guys that like, couldn't shoot the puck in the net off the beach. Mhm. Is that a sane Like I mean like casing, Middle stop wasn't even in. He wasn't even in the lineup, hard time handing that out the beach, too, though. You know what I'm saying? Casey, Middle Stat was on the right wing. And then he's on the left wing. He never played his natural position the entire year until Ralph Krueger or until Don Granato stepped up and gave the kid an opportunity and gave him constant confidence and he took it from there. Not only that, I just read an article Like we talked about like K stimulus that doesn't have the speed and the more and more when you put your roster together. Your speed guys have to be On the wing. That's where you drive and push the pace and Casey medals that will never be a speed guy. He can be quick burst, but it'll never be a speed guy. So what he has to do is get the puck in the middle. Quick burst. Take it outside. To the winger, so the winner can go through the neutral zone with speed. And then all of a sudden, Casey is catching up to the place. Second wave going down deep making small area plays. And that's how he's going to get successful. So I really think that center and use that skill to make fast place list like Sam Reinhart did. Well, yeah, but Sam Sam was not the Sams are really good player, and he showed in the second half last year that he could play center. The difference between Sam and Kasey Mills that They're not fast, neither one of them. Casey's got better skills. Better hands quicker hands and can make quicker place. Sam is a little bit longer deliberated, but he wouldn't say that. Casey is slow, though. I wouldn't even say that Sam Reinhart is slow average for the For the league. You know, you have your whippersnappers. These guys that are just absolute speedsters. They have no brains whatsoever, but they have super insane wheels. And and They're They're great. Okay, They have that speed. I don't think that Casey. Middle stat. When you talk about him, you don't talk about his skating. His skating is is probably the area. Um That needs improvement. And he will. I'm sure as he grows as a player, he will become a better skater. He reminds me of like, you know, John Tavares when he came into the league, If you remember John Tavares John Damaris was like considered slow. Was drafted first overall because he Insane skills in same skills, But he was he thought the game exceptionally well. He sucked people to him, distribute the parks and any made people around him better. And I think Casey Middle stat is kind of like in that mold of a John to various, in the sense that you know he has great skills. He has scoring ability. He has the ability to make plays to suck people to him. And he he's not an elite skater, but he is an elite players. Still, so I think, Casey, Middle stat, even though skating, maybe not his strength. I think, he adds an element that is Really, really, you know, good for the players that are playing around him. Instigators Andrew Craig and Marty W Gr 5 15 MSG Noon to one Can I ask you guys a question and we'll move on to Yoki heard you and I don't know if I I don't know if I think I know what I mean by this, But I wonder if you understand what I say by this, So so I'll try to make this quick Casey. I think we all know and has said himself that he changed last year's off ice habits, whatever whatever they may be correct. Right? We all heard that Not making that up, right? No. Yeah, We all heard day. So I wonder, too. Like Greg. You say 1.75 teen gives him 2.5. I wonder if the team.

"Coach Don Granado on the cam and strict podcast. We'll talk a little more hockey phone lines open. We've been Talking plenty of football. Of course, who? What has impressed you through the first two games of the preseason? Anything else you want to get, too? That's fine. 80305 50 Paul and for Jeremy today on our Western Hotline, hockey writer broadcaster Podcaster. I'll say Long time. I'm not saying that means he's old. I'm just saying it means he knows a lot about hockey. Scott Burnside joining us right now, Scott, it's Howard and Paul. Good morning, Sir. Thanks for coming on with us today. I will admit to being oil. That's that's all right. There's nothing wrong with that. Every team needs a good veteran present. So I have no problem with that. It's always good to talk hockey. You're you're like Joe Thornton. You know, you're just you've been around. That's it. Exactly. Yes. If I can keep up like Joe Jordan and I have no complaints whatsoever, And, of course, actually got attacked him go not too long ago about his now moved to South Florida so He's going to keep going so good for him. So it's It just means that hockey team is just around the corner. Scott, You know the story? Well, there are different stories up here, but the big one right now is what's going on with Jack Eichel. So from your perspective, What are your thoughts and what's happening here? And what are you hearing around the league? The fact that he's You know he doesn't want to be here. They can't agree on surgery. The Sabres can't trade him for whatever reason and everything that's taken place with him. Yeah, it does. There is a certain amount of gridlock. I think when it comes to Jack Eichel, and for all of those, uh, elements that you mentioned coming into play and It will be interesting to see in the as the days evaporate towards the start of training camp around the third week of September, and of course, with the regular season set to open on October, 12th. Um, you know, did the pressure points. Um, you know, we merged that that allow something to happen with Jack Eichel. And whether that's uh um you know, a change in viewpoint from management and from ownership and in terms of what kind of return is important for them. In dealing Jack Eichel. Um perhaps the pressure point, uh, re emerges with another team and whether it's a The team like the New York Rangers. Um, you know, we know Anaheim has been interested at some point. Certainly, Minnesota was at various points during the off season as we get closer to training camp, and then the start of the regular season do other teams say Well, we weren't prepared in the off season to do this, but we we can meet you somewhere in the middle of the road, and that sees You know what possible move with Jack? I called. So I think those will be interesting things to watch. As we get closer, um to training camp and then started the season. Of course. You know, we don't really know at this stage, depending on which avenue Jack Eichel ends up taking. In dealing with the disk in his neck, whether it's replacement surgery or restored of surgery, Uh those elements will go into play in terms of when he might actually be able to Join whether it's a Buffalo Sabres or a new team? Uh, that throws another level of uncertainty into the entire mix. And I think that's really what's been a, you know, for me, at least in talking to executives around the NHL that the issue isn't just so much. Yes, Everyone understands. Jack Eichel is an elite talent. He's a you know, Pick your number. Is he a top five center in the NHL? Certainly a top 10 Top 10 center in the NHL if he's healthy Um, but that the the uncertainty over his neck injury and how it is best treated and what his recovery time and The potential to get him at 100%. At some point, it really does cloud the issue and I think it has made it very difficult for teams have been interested, especially given the demands from the Buffalo Sabres and GM. Kevin Adams. Um I've been one of the very few people have said I'm like, I don't know. Jack Eichel's Under contract of Buffalo Sabres. You're not playing anywhere else unless the team finds a partner and willingly moves on from him. I know a lot of people believe that he could never put on a Sabres jersey again could not play a game for the Sabres again. But at some point of V is healthy. Whatever procedure it does go through. At some point he needs to play hockey. And if it's if there isn't a trade, and he's a member of the Buffalo Sabres that doesn't help both the player and the team If he's on the ice. Now, maybe the bridges have been burned so badly that can Or is it a possibility? I still say at some point, especially with Don Granado coming in and being named the permanent head coach after taking in taking on the interim job and doing such a nice job, man, If you can't play for Don Granato, you can't play for anybody. So I'm just curious to see how it all works. So I am I have been in the small minority that says, Well, maybe there is an opportunity for Jack cycle to come back. And if it's not for the long term, it's not the balance of his contract, perhaps, but at least to get back into shape and back and hopefully driving for the Sabres state driving up his market value. I mean, maybe that happens in a Buffalo Sabres jersey, but certainly This Sega. I'm sure his fans are wishing it was over, but it's not over yet. That's for sure. Scott. I haven't seen in a bit, but great to talk to you. And it's I say to myself the reason I think this cycle thing could could go into next off season. Is if you're another team that wants to trade for Jack Eichel, your to appoint right now, No matter which surgery we're talking about. You're not going to have the hockey player and opening night. So, depending on which surgery going to get if you're going to get the fusion, you're probably not going to have him for most of the season. You might get him back for the last month or two, possibly So if if it winds up being the future, If you're a team, why would you trade for a guy that you might not even be able to use this year? Yeah, the it's absolutely valid point and I think that's earlier in the off season. Why you saw Jack Eichel's representatives coming out and trying to lay out a plan? Because my understanding as it is, we do the replacement surgery. That there and again because it's unknown vis a vis how hockey players would respond to it and their ability to get back to being able to play one of the most physical sports in the world. Um, but the feeling is, I know in talking to some of the medical people, uh, that some of the other teams have talked to is a feeling that if it's done properly, That the rehabilitation period may be much shorter than than just the restorative surgery. So and I think that's why that there was this, you know, and lots of criticism of how it was handled..

"That is Sabres General manager Kevyn Adams speaking about the draft class. And yesterday. The question I believe was was asked in the way of, you know, you know, I think it was Mookie Hawkins, who asked this question. And he asked, you know about Oh, and power, Just like you know. How do you feel about him? And, you know, is he going to pretty much be the next you know Josh Allen of this draft or something like that. And Kevin Adams had that response. He didn't necessarily mentioned Oh, and power and Listening to it again, You know, um, certainly it It leaves a little doubt in your mind as to if the savers are actually going to draft him. I mean, yes, I get it. The Sabres have been busy with the the coaching search and coach watch and figuring out what they're going to do. And they hired Don Granato. And yesterday A story comes out from Mike Morey Allen NHL dot com. Talking with Own power. Little bit of his future and whether he's going to make the jump to the NHL or go back to Michigan and play another year with the Wolverines, which I think is absolutely fine. Power can do that veneers can do that. Ken Johnson. Obviously he should do that. But Looking at the top of the draft, and we just talked with Will Scotch Great job with the scouting report on YouTube, and, uh, he's at Scow Ching on Twitter. He does a great job breaking down these these prospects and putting them in their own tears and rankings and He definitely said something that I would agree with. I would agree with the fact that I'm not necessarily so sold on Owen Power. Yes, I think Owen power had a good World Championship, and I think that at times he really he really did flashes potential at the car at the collegiate level, but There are certain things about Owen Powers game that Still needs some work. And you know another year college could potentially help with that. But Will scour each pretty much put it as you know, it took him time to adjust it with certain things. And there were certain aspects of his game that necessarily didn't come about, you know. Right away or didn't come about at all during the season, so We will have to see. But I'm looking at this year's draft that I'm looking at the top of the draft, and I really do like Matthew Veneers. I really like Matthew B. Ba nears a lot and if you if you missed it, and it's been a while since I I wrote these prospects Profiles, but I did write about Owen Power and I did write about Matthew veneers on our website. W gr 5 50 dot com. And Looking at Both of their games. Matthew Veneers is Definitely a player that people no matter where he's going to get drafted. People are going to love Matthew Veneers. He is a 200 ft player. He goes 110% 100% of the time. And he he's just never going to give up on a play. That's exactly what people in buffalo are going to love about Matthew Veneers and with Owen Power, and this is a and I hate bringing this up. Because this has been brought up in the past and talked about here, especially in Buffalo. If you're drafting Owen Power for size in skating. Do not expect him to be Zidane. Oh, Ciara. Tyler Myers when people when we drafted him, and everybody was just like, Oh, he's got to become the Sedano Ciara, please. Zidane Oh, Ciara's. They do not grow on trees. They do not come every once in a while. They are once in a lifetime players and the way this game is going Players like Zidane, Achara. Yes, they're still going to be around, but they're not going to be many of them. And for people looking at Owen power and thinking that Oh, well, he's got the six ft six frame £215 yada yada. Well, if he adds another £20 and adds a little muscle and gets tough, He can be the city. No trial. No, We cannot expect that of these guys, especially in today's game. A lot of these type of defenseman are going to Make the they're going to develop into these very good skating defenseman with heads up all the time and making these really nice plays and Owen Power is one of those guys who probably has one of the who probably has arguably the best vision of especially the defenseman in this draft class. He skates really well, but if you watch him, his head is always up, and he's always looking around trying to make the best passes and trying to make the best players. He's got very good vision. Very good hockey sense. And, you know, there are reasons why he is projected to be where he is at number one just because of the potential that he has Especially if he goes back to college this year and really puts it all together and starts to dominate at the collegiate level that will make that pick even more of a Oh, yeah, for sure, That's why he was drafted number one. However. Like Will said there are certain things with his game that there are still plenty of question marks about And I personally really like Matthew veneers. And if I am the Sabres at number one, I'm probably taking Matthew veneers. But Then again. Like I brought up You look at his Potential projection and and, you know, looking ahead at what he could become if he becomes a really nice second pair defenseman, especially on the left side. And if you have Rasmus Dahlin here in Buffalo as the number one defenseman who you know he's shown over the past few years that he can have that potential to become That top number one defenseman for an organization and and be able to do all he can do. The Sabres have Darlene and power 12. That's a really, really nice 12 punch on your defensive group, and especially with Ryan Johnson coming in who could be the Third or second pair left handed defenseman on the on the right side. You've already got Henry. Okay? How are you? And you've also got Will Borgen, Who's there? And Oscar relaxing and is a really, really.

Josh Allen Tyler Myers Ken Johnson Mookie Hawkins Kevin Adams Don Granato Ryan Johnson Will Borgen Rasmus Dahlin Matthew B. Ba Zidane 110% Ciara Will Scotch Matthew Veneers £20 Kevyn Adams Henry Owen Power Matthew veneers

And you can also text us as well. There is the number two. Texas is the same number to call us. So if you can't call And you You want to get in your thoughts? You can text us for sure. 71680305 50. Things getting a little interesting in the Sabres offseason Now at this point, I mean, they've been interesting ever since we had the end of season conference calls with Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart Rasmus Worse, aligning Kevyn Adams. Don Granado. They all spoke back in May. Throughout that entire time. We've been kind of debating back and forth. What happens next? Is Jack Eichel trade Going to happen? Is the coaching search going to come to an end sooner rather than later? Sam Ryan hurt on the move. How are things going to play out? Well, the first domino kinda falls. For the Sabres, as he as Don Ganado gets the chance to come in and be the full time head coach going forward of the Buffalo Sabres. He gets hired officially on Tuesday. He was introduced yesterday and had plenty of comments that Lot of people just raved about him. And I mean, I could have told you that people were going to raving about what he had to say when he would join us every Tuesday morning with Howard and Jeremy Don Granado is a very well spoken guy. He's I mean, he's just straightforward down to earth and I think he really gets and understands how these young players work and how these young players operate. At any level of hockey. I mean, don Granada has been a head coach in an assistant coach, and he's been all around the hockey universe here, especially in North America. He's coached at the H L level he's coached at the S C H l level he's won a championship in the Chl. Level two. He was coach of the year at the H L level. He's been an assistant coach in the NHL before he's been a coach at the U. S. H L level and he was a head coach with the U. S National Development Team program, where he's working with some of the best talents in the entire In the entire country of the United States. I mean, some of the best young talents that are, you know, 16 17 18 years old going to Plymouth, Michigan to take part in the world and, you know, qualify for the World Juniors qualified for the world Championships, the under 18 the under seventeens all that sort of stuff. He was there He was coaching these young players so he gets how it works for Not only just the young players but also veteran players or guys that have been around in these leagues for a very long time. So he I think that was a very important thing that was going to happen for this next Sabres head coach Was they needed to get a guy who Not only was a guy that can adjust on the fly, like he showed in his 28 game tenure that the Sabres had him as the interim head coach. Or you can make those in game adjustments or he reads the game and how everything's kind of flowing and makes decisions on the fly like that. But also the Sabres needed a coach that can understand how all these players sort of operating sure, Don Granados not been a head coach at the NHL level, but again, he has been a coach at every single level that he is. That he's been a part of He's been He's been working with the youngsters. He's been working with teenagers. He's been working with aged veterans. He's been working with everybody that you could possibly imagine, and I think that was a really important higher. Because you look back at the decisions from before you brought in Ralph Krueger, who I mean he didn't necessarily get a ton of work with young junior players or anything like that. He was mainly a Coach for the Swiss national team. He coached in Edmonton for a little bit, you know, didn't necessarily have that type of experience. And you look at Phil Housley, whose was never an NHL coach. But he was a a prominent assistant coach who worked really well with the defensive group in Nashville before he was hired by the Sabres, But he didn't necessarily have That broader experience and Dan Basma sort of the same thing didn't have that broader experience had the coaching experience at the NHL, an assistant coach here and there, But I mean, when you look at Don Granados resume He has been Everywhere. Coaching in North America, junior level E C. H l H L and now he's going to be the head coach at the NHL level, and I think this is a good step forward for the Sabres in terms of how this team may look. And hearing from Don Granado Yesterday. He spoke a lot about the young talent that was on this team and focusing on not just trying to develop this young talent but also having them Succeed in key areas of the game that that they need to excel in every single game. Getting them those opportunities again reading sort of everything that's going on in a game. And if one young player is playing well, I mean, example. Let's Let's say that, you know, Casey, middle set goes out there. He's playing second line center. He's having a great game. He's already got a goal and assist in the game and whoever's playing number one centers kind of struggling. Maybe at that point, Don Granato says, Hey, let's ride the momentum of Casey. Middle Stat playing well, Let's throw him up to the top line with whoever is on the wings there and then. We'll bump down the other guy and see all of that The chemistry kind of changes up and he may not stick with that. After every game, he may go back to the way it was. But it's those read and react moments that we saw from Don Granado in the 28 games that he was able to coach with the Sabres that I think a lot of people really fell in love with and saw that Hey, despite that 9 16 and three record, which Did did not look pretty And obviously, the Sabres finished dead last in the NHL once again this season. But seeing the progression of how these younger players started to turn around their season, seeing how the team started to play as a collective group and actually started to really click in jail with one another on the ice was a really, really promising sign of things to come. For the Sabres with Don Granado at Out in front and leading the charge for the Sabres. So don Granato yesterday said a lot of really good things that I think a lot of people got really, really excited about. And you know what stood out to you. What would you like to hear from Don Granado yesterday and you could you could chime in anytime you want. You can join in with your thoughts that 80305 50 you know there? There are some things that certainly stood out to me. I'm scrolling back to, uh to our twitter feed on at the W gr Twitter account just to kind of Refresh everyone's minds of just You know what he said? That that really kind of stood out. And, you know, I think the very first thing that we heard that stood out was Don Granado didn't want any other job, except for this one. And how many coaches in and we hear the phrase all the time or just like, Well, you know, there's 32 coaching jobs. There were 31. Then there were 30. Now there are 32 coaching jobs in the NHL. I mean, which what person is not going to take you know which which person is not going to take a coaching job if they're hired, or if they're offered that job. Down Granado pretty much told Kevin Adams right off the bat after the season ended. This is the only job I want. So if it works out, you know it works out great and he and Granado said with show with a bulldog yesterday when he made the appearance at four o'clock If you miss that it's available on demand at W g r.

I've been listening to a lot of Metallica And if you just if you took Nickelback song, slap them on a metallic album, you wouldn't know the difference. That's the problem. It's just that their Canadian Happy Canada Day, everybody Cabs. Like I said, no one's really happy in Montreal. We will carry the Don Granato press conference at 11 o'clock and looking forward to hearing you know some of his answers. He's always been very good in his press conferences. His end of the year media address was fantastic. And Marty, We haven't had a chance to really chat with you since he was hired as he was hired on Tuesday. We talked about it yesterday. What was your initial thought before we get into some of the other stuff here, Sabre related when you heard the news? Were you surprised that it was don Granado? No, I was not surprised. I think we've all been, uh, an agreement that don Granado was going to be the next Sabres coach. Unless they were able to land maybe a jar gallant and somebody with a high profile like that, But I still thought that Don Granado was the leading candidate from the end of the season. When Granado got the interim job. We were like this is just to end the season and he really made it happened for himself. The way the team played the structure as to which the Sabres played with the way the younger players developed and playing much better and produced, Um it's not that the record was great. In the last 10 games, there were three and seven. The records weren't great. But these also didn't have Jack. I called in an F. Taylor Hall didn't have her exalted in Avellino soul Mark they didn't have didn't have a lot of players. Jake McCabe. Jake McCain didn't have a lot of players, but Who stepped up and you look better. Rasmus Dahlin, number one Rasmus Dahlin was 100 times better under Don Granado as numbers are not even comparable because It's two different players. Casey Middle Stat dates. Thompson Dylan cousin stayed the same, but also Dylan cousins, a 19 year old player while he turned 20. But still, uh, that just, you know, in his first year, so he's just out there to play. Jeff Skinner was better. Sam Reinhart was really, really good at center when nobody thought Sam could play center anymore, So there was so many great things. To look at Don Granado that to me and made it made perfect sense that he was gonna get a chance to continue on what he had worked on. All right. Well, we're going to hear from my thought. Rivers going to chime in there. Um, we're gonna hear from Don Granado at 11 John Vogel yesterday. The scouting staff likes all the guys from Michigan, so power will go first, and the Sabres will try to get another pick to take Matt Ben ears or can't Johnson now here's the other. Side of that last Lisovsky tweets sources Tell me the savers are higher on William Ackland than any other forward in this draft, so Where do you guys stand on this? Is this something that excites you? If the Sabres were to get back and grab another top 10 and take the Michigan Boys.

"Getting off on entering comes small. And now the instigators presented by Seneca Resorts and casinos. Nothing else comes close. Behind the scenes. We were challenging these guys very, very much. Um, which is a big part of it, because we need them to be better and again. I I coached as if I would be here next season. Uh, you know, obviously, I wouldn't want to be standing behind a bench in October. And not have taken advantage of this opportunity to get these players valuable experience playing against top teams experiencing not only that, but the potential of failure. And then addressing it with them and challenging them to become better because of it. At his head coach. New head coach Don Granado, officially hired by the Buffalo Sabres yesterday. Instigators W G R Sports Radio 5 15 MSG Good morning, everyone Game two of the Stanley Cup final tonight. And we'll talk about Don Granato. Craig's got some trade ideas for Jack Eichel, because I wrote something this morning in a text message, and and it got ribs, ribs, a Bruin, But first of all, I say good morning to you, Rev. Pain in the ass right off the bat to and the group meeting. I mean, uh, I joined one bills live yesterday to talk about the hiring of Don Granato and, uh I corrected. Brownie when he said co host of the instigators and then so, Jay Harris said, Oh, good job correcting Brownie with the co host of the instigators thing and I said, uh I said, Yeah, I said, just for the record, everybody back there and then I even prefaced. It was saying whatever Craig jumps in with saying here, don't listen to it. It's the truth. You know, I really don't care. If I'm called the host of the co host, it's just something that I have fun with, because in no way, shape or form could Craig ever be called the host? So like he literally just answers questions. So that's why I say, because it's just fun because I correct myself because you're you're really just a cost. That's how I worded. I, uh I I would actually go even as far as to say that. I'm just I'm a guest, but I'm on every day. Your your daily guest? Yeah, like I don't even think that co host should be in my title. I would say every day guest. Okay, Um And I think that better suits my my my abilities and, you know, listen, I'm okay with that. I listen. We all have our jobs. We all have our strengths and we all have our weaknesses. Um And I won't have any week. I'm all cat. I will tell you whatever you want to call me Got nice, sick, thick leather skin, And you know what? We? We have fun every single day and I listen, I'll give you the prop. Speedy. You are the host. Oh, my God. No! Stop. See, this is where I got a wonderful this. Listen, I don't want everybody to listen right now. I'm gonna you do a very good job. Alright. I'll give you five minutes to talk about what you do. You do a very good job. I've really enjoyed working with you. You truly are the host of this, uh, this instigator. And I'm just happy to be here. I'm happy to just answer questions. Now. I just want to hang up. I gotta hang up and listen. I just want to hang up and listen, because this is this is beautiful. It's a beautiful moment here. Speaking of beautiful moment, I'm sure the Granado family is very, very happy. Yeah. And you know, I'm I wasn't surprised. I spoke of it yesterday. Craig, I'll give you I'll give you the moment here to take it away. I was I was not surprised. Were you surprised? I was not surprised at all. I think that don Granado For me for me. Um, you don't have to look any further. Than Rasmus Darlene. Yoki. How are you? Casey, Middle Stat. Page Thompson. And you can just you can keep going through the lineup of you know Matea Samuelsson, Um Dylan cousins, Rasmus Ass spline. I need Sam Reinhart like there was so many players that turned around their game. This is this is a man. This is a man that took over a team that was on an 18 game losing streak. Says that this is a man that had to not only, um, change the environment and when I say that the way they practiced the way they came to the rink every day. You know he needed to change that environment. The hardest thing for a coach. By far is to deal with the brain. Of an athlete. Was once an athlete loses confidence. It's extremely hard to play the game at a high level. We all watched Rasmus Darlene at the start of the year. Well, let me ask you something in just how hard is it for Don Granato to take the team with where they were with their confidence. Even just make them look. Yeah, Respectable on the can win a lot of games. They didn't win a lot of games when he took over. But it looked like a completely different hockey team. And that's the most important thing. I think that the fan base really appreciated and loved. He was very honest when he spoke to the media, okay. He understands that where this team is at And There's something that needs to be built. When your head coach, you're going to say the same thing. Going to be cliche type stuff. You know, I got to build the environment I've got. I work on this work on that. It's the same thing is, but He went out in a in the toughest situation of any coach in the National Hockey League and changed The psyche of a many, many players that played in the last 2025 games of the season. And that's why he is the head coach now of the Buffalo Sabres. He has earned He has earned the respect of the players. Any trust of the players, the trust of the players and he earned this opportunity because of what he the change. It was almost noticeable. You can see the change in the structure into which they played the pace in which they played. It seemed like players that were struggling immensely at the start of the year under Um Um, I forget his name already. Ralph Krueger. Um, you could see a change in the players and how they were playing the game under Don Granato. So I'm really excited about this. I'm excited to see I'm excited for Don Granado because he also He also had a depleted lineup. Okay, and I would like to see what don Granato can do with a four Buffalo Sabres lineup starting next year and there is going to be changes. There is going to be changes. And I'm excited to see what he can do with those changes. Instigators w gr 5 15 MSG I need to mention Darren Dreger is going to join us today at 11. Why today at 11 because Friday we're off. We're off all next week. Elliot won't be on with us tomorrow because at 11, we will carry the don Granado Zoom press conference as he is introduced as the 20th head coach in franchise history. Um, But you just said you just said something. And you know there are tweets coming in. You can tweet us at the instigators. He's at Craig Rivet. 52. I'm at the instigator 76. What do you think of the higher Give us a call. 80305 58 85 52 5 50 Now that the coaches hired What's your next order of business for the Buffalo Sabres? 80305 58 885 52 5 50 See if we get some calls on the line here. Um Someone tweeted to me and said some good coaches left on the table. And I said, Um, I didn't say anything. I just thought Yeah, there were I said, But this is an indication of anything does this higher does this higher? Indicate anything to you, Craig specifically because I feel like back when we were talking about the coach hire. We talked about things like, um Will the direction of the team have anything to do with the higher if they hire a John Tortorella, who was still out there or a Rick talk it who is still out there? Um Are they keeping Jack Salmon resto and trying to go for it and continue to build on the fly and bringing a coach that might be a little more familiar with working with high end stars and getting the most out of them. Or do you hire a Don Granato?.

"Talking about the Sabres announcement of Don Granado is the 20th head coach in the history of the franchise. Paul Hamilton is on our Western hotline going over that with us, Paul, What do we know if anything? About Don Granados staff. Um you know, we we know how they finished the season with Alice and Girardi, Um, as his main main assistance. Um, do you expect those guys to be back? Or do you think we'll have to wait till Thursday to get some clarity on what they're what they're planning to do with the coaching staff? I'm being told that anybody that interviewed with Kevin Adams was told that Matt Ellis would be on their staff. And that happens with some teams where The GM, you might have one guy on the staff that he wants. And then the coach has other guys on the step. Honestly, I don't think Don Granado would. It would object to that. I think Matt Ellis is a very, very Good coach. Um uh, Even before Matt Ellis was done playing, I knew You would be coaching in this league. He's just a very good not in mind. His work ethic, his second to none. But, uh, I had heard fairly early in this process at any coach. An interview with Adams was told Matt Ellis would be on their staff. So yes, I would. I would think there's and I think Dan Girardi did a really nice job with the defense. All you have to do is watch the games and to see You know, At first, I thought why is Darlene and Yoki hard? Why are they together? What are you doing? You just took your to worse guys and you, You're going to put them together and their youngsters and It was a great move. They both improved greatly. They both played well together, and I think Girardi was part of that. I mean, those guys saw a guy that has was on the ice in the NHL in 2000 and 19. He's not that far from being on the ice, and that matters to players. You're not talking to a guy has been retired for 25 years. Who played in an era that is totally different from what things are now I think things like that matters, so I would be very surprised if Dan Girardi wasn't on the staff do Okay, well, You know, in general here, we we We thought this was likely, or at least he was the favorite for the job. Now he's got it. The press conferences Thursday. That's July 1st. And then in less than three weeks, the expansion draft, then the NHL draft and then free agency. I didn't think to look this up yesterday. We're talking about the expansion draft. Is there a deadline? To submit your lists before the draft. There probably is. Do you have in the know Paul? Like what The deal is there is there is and I'm in a position right now, but I don't have my notes, okay? So but, yes, there is a date. That's that's coming up a year list has to be submitted July 17th Okay, July 17th Thursday. Thursday is July 1st. So you've got two weeks there and you know it's this is the coach and they've probably been making plans. I guess I'd want to say Um, pretty soon stuff is going to have to get moving. It's so hard to figure out what their list is going to be because who's traded by them? Have you acquired players that need to be protected? Have you traded away players that needed to be protected? So Really trying. You know, I've done it, you know, trying to put a list together and figuring it out. Right? Probably is not going to be the group of players that you're going to be figuring your list out from So you know, I'm sure not guarantee that Adams and Bernado have sat down and gone over it. Talking about this player to that player. And what if we're down to three guys, and we can only protect to? What do you think? Knowing that the conversation could go right out the window depending on what kind of trades you've made before the 17th. Don't go make your moving Paul. They might not have like trouble protecting the guys They want to protect. If they move Eichel and Reinhardt before you have to submit that list. And get bad guys who don't have to be protected. Then you probably are are fine. Look, I might I don't know I don't want to create an artificial deadline, but It would make sense to me if you know your trading these guys that you do it and don't waste protecting them, Um and and protect something else. If you you know, have the opportunity to do so. I mean, I know other teams might be on the same sort of timeline, and maybe they would rather not have to protect a player. They're just acquiring right now. By trading away guys who don't have to be protected, so it's got to work both ways. But if I'm the sabers, I want to make those trades and free up spots to protect other assets. Actually risk the line is Because why not get something for him instead of leaving him unprotected? Then you just lose him for nothing. Why not try to get something for him and then take it that takes him off your protected list. Because I certainly don't want to lose Oregon. I don't want to lose you. Okay? Are you so rich? The line in would would be the guy. I would think. That you would take. And would they even take crystal wine? Would they maybe be more interested in Colin Miller? And they would be in crystalline and depending on you know what they're thinking with that, especially with only one year left on his deal. So, yeah, that's the kind of thing that can help you a lot. Because I just have no appetite at all whatsoever to be losing Morgan and box rolls around. He knows it for hitting You. Okay? How are you Can do I mean, that's pretty much was one of bottles. Really good moves was trading the lander for you. Okay, How are you? So he's quite quite Are familiar with what he can do so to me, risk the line and almost one way or the other. Either You free up the spot by trading him where he's the guy that you leave unprotected. The key is, how are you and then go ahead and leave vulnerable everybody else that he acquired. That's what that that would be my philosophy here just to fill it out for folks who aren't keeping up at home, baby and have forgotten. Jason Botterill is an assistant GM in Seattle. So that that's why Paul is making that connection. May he have a lot of, uh, Power over hockey decisions. Okay. Um, Paul, you know, and also just attack onto this. Go make your moves. Then go market. Your new team, right? Like It's a shorter off season again..

"July and still drive forecast through them and become weather center meteorologist Kristin Clark. Remember yesterday we were saying it was 100 and eight degrees at CEATEC. Well, downtown Seattle. Now it's 84. Homeowners time. 3 36 1st Lady Jill Biden teaming up with Dallas Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith today as she promotes covid vaccinations in Texas. Baylor Infectious disease expert Dr Peter Hotez says the state is not in good shape. We're seeing sharp increases in East Texas together with the low vaccination coverage that spells trouble trouble, he says. Fewer than half of all Texans are fully vaccinated. So are all these incentives to get people vaccinated? Not making a dent in the numbers, ABC. Mark Miller joining us on the common Newsline, What have you learned Mark? Yes, So when you look at these incentive programs, many of them seem to be lacking in terms of the desired effect. That a number of the states that have enacted these programs haven't seen the kind of turnout or boosts the vaccination numbers that they were hoping by instituting these kinds of, uh, giveaways. Essentially, um, Little Rock in Arkansas for, for example. The state. There had a $1 million program for scratch off lottery tickets and vouchers for game and fish licenses. Well, so far, only 3000 people have taken advantage of it. Then you look at Ohio, for example, which was the first in the nation to create an incentive program like this. In in immediately. It had an effect in the first week it saw 43% boost that it was announced from the week prior. But the numbers have dropped off. Since then, we've seen that in New Mexico and Oregon, California other places like that. And so it does appear that they're just not having the kind of boost to vaccine numbers that public officials hoped when they instituted these things. Do we have any idea how much money has been thrown into these incentive programs from coast to coast? No, no, I don't have accounting of coast to coast. But I mean, it's significant. Um, you know, there's in New Mexico, For example, there was a sweepstakes program where vaccinated residents could win prizes from pool totaling $10 Million Ohio had, uh, you know a big program as well, which was one of the first ones. So there, you know, there's there's been a fair amount thrown into this, but it just hasn't seemed to have the effect. And I think the question is, you know, perhaps why this hasn't had that effect in You know, in searching for a little bit of an answer. I came across an interview that a Wharton School of Business Management professor did and he kind of classified people into groups. There's a group of people who Are going to get vaccinated. No matter what they care about it. They want the vaccine. They're going to do it, so the incentive doesn't really matter to them. Then there's the group of people who say they will not get vaccinated whatsoever, and it's likely because they have a safety concern. Well, if that's the case, then it's unlikely that they're going to be moved by monetary incentives. Um If safety is their concern, and in fact another professor at Penn Medicine Center for Healthcare Innovation, Doctor David Dashed said, You know the opposite. Could be true. If you're having to offer all this money, you might Have people thinking well, they'd never offer that kind of money if it was a good thing, as he said, So, uh, you know, it doesn't seem it seems like that could be part of the reason here. You have skeptics who money is not going to move the needle for them and then people who are going to get the vaccine anyways, the question remains. I think for some of these professors here discussing this is who's in the middle or is it people who have low income, inadequate housing, inadequate transportation? Access things like that. Are those the people that you can try and reach and make a difference? And and it might not be lotto tickets. That really moves the needle for them, either. It's really about access and and time and ability to get it, ABC. Mark Remillard. Thanks Mark. No problem. Thank you. 3 40. "Could even use us to say like guys. Not nothing is changing until this gets resolved. And maybe Adams will talk like that on Thursday, but I don't really expect it to be very forceful. You know, I don't know if it's been resolved. But if if that were the fundamental point, don't you agree like, wouldn't Elliott Friedman and Darren Dreger on W g r every week be saying we can't? We're not getting off the ground here until Michael and the Sabres or through arbitration or whatever come to a deal on his on his rehab on his injury. I think that that makes a lot of sense. Yeah, yeah, I mean, it's it's definitely a distinct Possibility. You'd be hearing that if there was real real worry about it. Yeah, So maybe the point is, maybe there isn't And you know it's another way for my house of cards theory to fold, uh, in on itself, because, but, you know, I I'm real interested to hear what I mean. I'm glad for Don Granato. I like the choice. I was never not in favor of the choice. I I liked the you know, rummaging around and talking to all these people, and we've covered that many times like I I think even just for appearance's sake, the guy like it from a like a realistic Learn something about your team from However many 10 12 how many different coaching candidates? You talked to get assessments from people about what they think about you and see if you learn something that you you can find useful. Great, Okay? Um, I think just from pure appearances if they had just hired Don Granada without doing that. I think it would have just looked like a very savory cost effective. This is good enough move when you know the reality, is they? Yes. A lot of players improve their individual play. The team's results were not real good. They were better than they had been. But you know, the guy was Hired in the midst of an 18 game losing streak. So you know there was nowhere to go but up, So of course they improved. Um, it is not a criticism of the higher It's just I think if the Sabres have made this official on, you know, when does the season end? If they had done this before Memorial Day, even It might have looked like they were just settling for whatever. And so I don't know how important or impactful. All the interviews were, but they avoid the appearance of just settling for the guy who won Whatever government games. Don Granato one, and I think that that might Well, might I think it should, and I I hope it does matter to them. I think there is another side to that coin. I think that that is sort of normally true. What Teams want. I think it sounded every time like that's what the Sabres were here for when they used Gregor Gregor rather and Friedman in their ways, which is all guys, I mean, this we're still at first base. There are this this guy's in Europe and they can't get to him. We're waiting on the Rangers. The Sabres would always want you. This is sort of the default position that teams end up at or start at, I guess and end up at which is like what you just said, like they want to make sure you think they're doing their work. Right. I mean, a team that just completely gutted. It's Hockey Department to save money was doing the utmost to research coaches. Okay, fine. Think maybe, And I don't even really mean to question that right now. My point is, the other side of that is like what I have needed from the Sabres lately. I've been tied up. Because I want I want to get going. You know, I know that the season isn't even over yet. And I know that you do want to talk to some other coaches. What did Darren Dreger say? Oh, they've talked to talk it at least twice a moment. 67 times. Who knows? I mean, at least we got to make sure you know how thorough this is all that What I need from the Sabres. His action And even if it means trading Jack Eichel, which is like sort of a hideous thing. In and of itself. Just do it. And if I were they on the matter of Granado, I think I would have been ready the first day. With. Okay. This guy works for what we're doing right now or if not the first day. I mean, that's not. I don't mean that so specifically, just like I wouldn't have wanted to sort of fixate on Looking like it's going to take a long time. Let me say here, too. I'm not sure that's what they did like what? The premise that we started with here, as was and and has been recently figure out what the bottom line is with Jack. Before you have you do this? And so that probably took time, right? That's if you want to give the benefit the Dow. I think that's probably most of why it took them three months. You know from they weren't going to make they didn't need to make Granado official like before the season was over. But I think like decisiveness is worth something extra. For them right now, And if you have people, I'll end this point with this if you have people who can sell it. Then I don't think you have to be in such a terrible place, And I think Adam's and Granado are both people who can sell it. I don't think Terry Pegula is and I think they know that which is why we've heard from him like five times in 10 years, but I think the GM and the coach of both In relatively small samples. Demonstrated that they can make a point. And that's really why I'm on board with both guys. Mhm is. Adams is not afraid of his shadow with those press conferences. He's got an awful team and he's got an awful situation and he's gonna have to sell Eichel and he's got ownership that tells them who knows what on a given day. But I think he comes off pretty well. And so does Granado. Granado was very effective. We both agreed He was very effective every week on the station during the season, explaining what he thought of players and what his strategies were things like that. Yeah, I like I like how he sounded about the game. You know, more than even his results, because, like I said, his results weren't great. They were just better than they had been. And again individuals did play much better, like Joe a little while ago. Um, you know, posted and maybe he did this some time ago, but I saw it again today, the pace that guys would have been on 82 game season Playing for Granada, which again is what roughly half of 56 games is about. What? What? He what he got. And you know you had guys on I'm pretty hearty paces Gold production wise. And so I recognize that and appreciate that, But yeah, Granado, he I don't think he hit a sour note One time talking either with Howard and Jeremy in the mornings or, you know, before or after hockey games. I really liked how he sounded. Um, you know, I I think it will be something to keep an eye on just how, uh, principal he is about some of the things that he said that appealed to us about entertaining hockey and attacking and all these different things. I think I made this point at one point late in the season. I think that sounds really good, and I think it's a lot more comfortable for any coach. To implement that sort of style. When you have no chance, like the stakes you are playing for our You're not even you don't even have a chance to even your record. You know, you're just you're so far behind your buried and I think when there are real stakes, the standings matter. At some point, I would hope with Dan Granado is their coach. They will play games. That you know that will be. It will be. Something will be thinking about. And I just wonder if if the you know, loose and free and attack in entertaining hockey and have fun and all that stuff. Sticks or if the system and playing defense and being responsible become more frequently mentioned when you know they're battling for eighth place or something. Well, that's Fair. I mean, that's what happens a lot. But he you know here. Here's both of us, hoping it doesn't turn into that. Right. He has he'll have a team. Probably. I mean, if I call trades, if, like illustrated, there's just no question about this. There might not be anyway. He'll have a team where the standards are going to be very different, you know, meaning low. For relatively speaking for this league like he he is not nobody unless maybe his boss. Is going to demand of him that he grind his way into the eighth seed or something like that's not what that's how the whole thing started..

"Sabres Coach Watch Darren Dreger joined the instigators today and provided an update. I still believe that Don Granato. Is the strong front running candidate are you do? I actually thought that we might be lucky enough to have the announcement this week. I'm not sure what's holding it up. I was told yesterday that it won't be this week, hopefully early next week. I am heavily leaning to don Granado being announced, But you know, Buffalo did interview wreck. Talk it at least twice. Welcome back Mike Show open the bulldog joined by our Sal carpaccio who is on the West Her hotline as we head to the weekend, Just looking at some Profits, some player props for the season futures. Is it interesting that only Trevor Lawrence Sal is Bigger favorite to be rookie of the year than Matt Jones. Like Even does Mac Jones even start right away. You've got Wilson. All right, so people have their questions about Zach Wilson. But It's not like he's going to need the Jets to win 12 games to win the award. If Lawrence is the favorite. I don't know. Like What do we think of Mac Jones in this in this spot, or just in general? Mm. I guess yeah. I think that is surprising that only Trevor Lawrence would be higher than him. Um, I guess that's taken a leap of faith that he's going to play. Pretty quickly and they're gonna win games. You know, I think that's got to be a part of it. I don't think he's going to have some incredible stat line. No matter if it's Jones or Newton. I can't see them, you know, slinging the ball all around. So Yeah, that's kind of curious to me. I think guys like Kyle pits will get opportunity. Jamaar Chase. You know, even maybe even a jail and waddle like people like that Devante Smith, you know they'll treat typically, quarterbacks will be up near there and then for your Zach Wilson point. I think yes, since we know he's going to start You know, Zach Wilson, at least should have a pretty good opportunity here. I think that is maybe more of a reflection on the on the expected quality of the teams. Of course, Jones has to play. I would bet anyone right now that Jones starts the opener. You have already bet me that that's that very thing, actually. Okay, good. Well, I guess I'm still listening. Other other takers. Um, So I like the chances of that happening. And maybe that's an indication of some, You know, betting people liking the chance of that happening and that New England will be successful, and Jones will get credit even if he doesn't put up. You know, 4000 yards passing or something, but he'll be the rookie quarterback that sort of turned New England back into a contender again, if you know if the year goes a certain way, right? Yeah, that's that's where I could see that. That's the argument. Yeah, we have a bet on that you I gave you 2 to 1. Okay, that Jones wouldn't start week one. So maybe I should get I'm starting to get nervous as we talk. I'm starting to worry. Trevor Lawrence, Plus 3, 50 Jones and pits plus 7 50. It is close. Trey, Lance 800 Jamaar Chase plus 800 Fields and Najee Harris at plus 900. Wait. Harris is also interesting for this. I think You'd have to have like, so Pittsburgh. Maybe this is going to happen. You don't know because it's just the off season. But there's a There's a little bit of, uh, speculation that Pittsburgh wants to sort of go back to a more old fashioned offense, and that's why they drafted this guy in the first round. Roethlisberger is so old now. If that happens, and it works, then he could win. If none of the other quarterbacks like really, really hit big as rookies, and then Harris could win, But Don't know that that announcement yesterday Sal on the Steelers, releasing their left guard means just more reason to worry about their their offense. Yeah. I mean, I think after what we saw from Ben Roethlisberger last year and a lot of questions about what he's going to be this year, a new offensive coordinator, um and an offensive coordinator Matt Canada. That does a lot of things that people basically said that Ben doesn't like doing but he seems like he's all in, so I'm really I think Pittsburgh to me might be New England, probably the most interesting team in the league. Pittsburgh is probably the second most interesting if not right there with them because I think there's a lot of questions and that's one of them like, how are they going to operate? Are they just going to try to run the ball as much as they can and give Najee Harris over 300 carries I mean, I think the rookie of the year is also kind of in line with like a dynasty fantasy draft, right, Mike and you would know more than makes you do that. You play those games more than I do. But I would think that when you think about it in those terms, you think about guys you think might get opportunity this year in dynasty that's you Take and that's who might get Opportunity for rookie of the year. And I think Harris is right up there with anybody. He's going to have volume this year, Right? That's that's right. I agree with you, man. Say all about the steel and they are like, you know, New England. Sure. Um, with Roethlisberger the way the way the second half of the year went, you know, 11. Oh, and like we all saw it coming and sure enough, They they they were pretty flawed when it when it all shook out, even though they won. What do they go? 13 and 3 12 and four whatever. They had an excellent season, but it just they did not look that good and to run it back again, without really Shoring up their offensive line and just drafting a running back. And now on top of that, the loan like stalwart guy they're all pro guard has to has to be released. He's got medical problems. Um, point and the bill C them week one. That's the opener. What a what a juicy thing that is going to be. I agree. I think, um, the more that this continues for them. You see what happened yesterday? I think this is an opponent that you know you want the bills to face. I think that the Steelers as opposed to last year, they might take a little time to get going. If they're going to it all this year. I can't see them coming out of the gate. They don't have that same continuity. They had to turn over their entire offensive line. Essentially now, Pouncey retired. The Castros released. They've had a few other guys. They've had to turn over here, Um, how they want to play football new offensive coordinator. I think that's the that's even a better week. One opponent. I think that originally thought Also looking at the, uh, the preseason Future futures odds. Sean McDermott comes in tied for fifth. For best odds to win Coach of the year. That's interesting to plus 1600..

"If if Kevin Adams tomorrow was going to announce that Don Granato is the new head coach, this team Think there'd be a lot of people that are very pleased. And okay with that decision moving forward, Okay? Yeah. My question to you is What is the coach? If it's not Don Granado. What coaches? Are you okay with Is, um is, uh Quinn, one of those coaches He would not be my first choice. He wouldn't be on my top. We heard Rick talk it. Uh, you know, last week I interviewed with the Sabres. What is the coach? That if it's not Don Granato, what is the coach that you would be okay with? Well, I'll tell you this the number one guy on top of my list, and it was always the number One guy on top of my list was Gerard Gallant. And now is that because you won No when he got fired from the Florida Panthers, I said Air Vegas airs your coach. When he got fired from Vegas. I said Seattle layers your coach. He's Remember him when he was an assistant with Montreal had a long conversation with him here in Buffalo. I have loved him as a coach as a person. What type of coaches he Marty. He's a player's coach. You know what he does? I mean, So there's for example, Alex stuck. Alex stock was a rookie in Vegas. Alex Duck, love the Vegas style, Right? Like I'm gonna set up dinners. I got friends here, friends there. I'm going to show in the Lamborghini. Most coaches Said a kid. How about you, uh, your head in the game and let's play the game right now. George La George Island is like you do what you have to do to be at your best. You want to try the lamb? Both. You want to be Bill Jackson to Phil Jackson's same thing, but give me or everything you've got. That's how I'm going to be a player's coach to you. I'm going to give you a rope. You do what you want with that row, and when it's not working, we're going to do it My way exactly there. I agree. He's not a soft, puppy like dog like you guys do whatever you want. Walk all over me. No, I'm going to give it to you. Then give me something back. I love that from Joe Gallant. I love that. It was real offer that guy gone through a wall for that guy. So this is a guy that you would probably say Gerald Gallant would be a player's coach, but he is good for older guys that are established that he's good for middle aged guys. Okay. I think it's good for everybody. Um, And I think you saw it at the world championship now, and that's just the use A very recent example. They're down three. Oh, there's no panic. It's Let's let's get one game going, right. I I really believed that he communicates well, he'd be my number one guy if that's not Don Granado and be George gone, But who knows? He's gonna have his pick enough teams. Probably who knows? Maybe not, But or maybe he's asking for a lot of money. I have no idea what that's what coaching vacancies are open. The Rangers. Columbus, Columbus Rangers, Arizona, Arizona, Seattle Buffalo. Yeah. Where else? Mhm. Well, Ducharme is going to earn that job now. It's not that's gonna is going to stay there. Um You know, And there might be some like for drug gallant If there's not an ideal situation, five teams currently right now that maybe a minute, maybe Winnipeg who knows what they do with Paul Maurice? Yeah. Who knows? But go ahead. Read. Make your point. You're right. Go ahead. I was just gonna say there's five teams out there. Then there was maybe while or better. It's rumored that Ron Brenda more as his contract done up, but it's still not. Pen to paper. So who knows? I think Rod Brennan. More knows that he does not need to have his contract. Um, go out publicly until the season's done. Would you? Would you agree? I would agree. I would think it's a handshake and we gotta we gotta deal done. Yeah. But okay, so to go back to question, though, so I think Granado for me is the likely guy because I really like how the team looked and he had a team. That was way worse. Talent wise, then away. They started at the start of the season, but the systems were good. The commitment to a team game was good and all three zones. He got the best out of the young guys. I really like what he did. But if you want to go a different route, and for me, it's not And there's a lot of other coaches out there. There's the Bob Hartley the bro's brewed row. Uh, the guy Boucher. Um well, there's a Tortorella. There's a lot of them out there and they are NHL coaches. For a reason. It would be George Gallant. Number one. I think David Quinn would come in at third or fourth in that list for me because the Rangers were scoring and outscoring teams like crazy. Yes, they had a couple of games where you know Zibanejad went off, but I think he found an offense from a team that really Nope. In Erin's advantage at but he got it out of Philip. He'd only got it out of Butch Nevins. He got it out of a lot of guys. I like that. I got Adam Fox to be and you're very special player like I I like him. What about Bruce Boudreau? Because we were talking and listening. And, you know, I think Bruce Boudreau is, uh, is a coach that Is interested in Buffalo. He's.

"You know, with the exception of a few, I mean, you know, the Maple Leafs aren't gonna do it. Economist David and the heavens and lighters aren't going to do it. Minnesota. Most definitely will have interest. What is the package look like they're the Anaheim Ducks will have interest. Columbus is looking for a one center. I don't think Columbus has the assets to Philadelphia. Philadelphia definitely wants to make a splash Montreal know Well, where? Where's Calgary? Where's Calgary and Mac? It took at these days. I mean, good question. Now that that matter, Chuck signed that bridge Steel with a huge qualifying offer of $9 million with the purpose right so he could control the process. He's not even as a restricted free agent. Uh, it feels like a stretch for me. Um, you know, even though Michael can't control this process Yeah. You can have conversations with General Max pictures as agents where you just say, Don't bother. Don't bother. I mean, you, you know, e guess he's gonna acquire the peace without any bonified protection. I don't even know. Does he have these two young for trade protection, right? I should have his contact. Michael. Yeah. Michael has one more year before is no more kicks in. So it kicks in before the 22 season. But I guess that's the question drags his eye. I don't think And maybe it's me being the person I am. I don't think he gets traded this summer. I think he has to play some hockey and the sabers have next year to be able to evaluate But You have been in in, you know, hockey for a lot longer than we have in the media like, what's your sense You're getting on the phones is that trade happening before the start of next season? Well, only if you get what you absolutely need, and I understand that position to um if you know the top end, players aren't available in a package. Then what's the rush again? You control the asset here on D only way. There's a push on this is if this is a big if Pakula's just say we've had enough. We've had enough So you've got to find the best deal and we expected to be a terrific deal. We don't want to have to deal with the bad press and everything else that's going to go along with this. On Gluck. Unless something has changed very recently. Jack hasn't asked for a trade. I mean, when you go back to last year, there's semantics. All of that. I think based on how he approached the media on Monday, It feels likely that that's what he's angling for in the bigger picture, but the sabers control it so as as long as Kevin Adams has the flexibility to manage this process entirely to its conclusion. There's no guarantee that he gets traded, and maybe it's more likely he doesn't because of the fear factor that exists and what Frank reporting when Elliot is suggesting and how I feel. I just I don't think teams is much respected appreciation they have for Jack, I I don't think they're stepping up with their top prospects. I just don't And if they're not there, then maybe the answer is you hold on to Jack and see what happens. I ask one more team, a team that Be honest with you. I haven't heard any inklings that they're even interested in this, but I'm going to throw a team out there and you just tell me it's the Vancouver Canucks. Allies. Patterson this year had an injury riddled season. I know the Travis Green and couple articles that I wrote was not happy with his play, and is there an opportunity there? Where you can make a trade for lives. Peterson for Jack Eichel. Hmm. I can't say no, I haven't heard. That s O. I'm reluctant to say yes, I know that Jim Benning. Every conversation I've had about those young players. Patterson, for sure he's looking forward to Podkolzin coming in. He's looking forward to, you know the further development of hope Berg. He's God, Bester and horror about all those good young pieces. Um I'd be surprised rubs. I'd be surprised. And you know the Vancouver Canucks even though they've got more flexibility coming, you know, just with the expiring contracts and whatever else they're not entirely out of cap purgatory here. So and what it would be Patterson and what I mean, again. Um, it was it would be a big person. And maybe another Another player. Um, you know for for Jack, because I I honestly when I when I look at it Ah, Last Patterson, you know he's a sentiment and league his first two years. He had fantastic numbers in his first two years. He's still a very young guy 22 you just turned 22 years old. He's a real deal. First Line center in this league, so no question. I just I don't know. Aside from getting again, a bona fide star in Michael, assuming he's healthy I don't think that bending in the Vancouver connection know yet what before Developmental upside of Paterson is And because of that, it's still too early. It's too early to pull that trigger. Yes, and hockey Insider Darren Dragger. Joining us here is he always does Friday's now at 11. If your regular listener for a long time we know there are millions of you so he's normally in 11 thirties. He's agreed to come on earlier. So we for this exact reason, So we have more time another conversation that's going to be had in Buffalo. I know there, Sam Reinhart and I know there's Rasmus crystalline, and I'm sure you have thoughts on those guys as well. But Don Granato, who is my front runner for the head coach for next year for many different reasons that don't matter right now because you're here. What are you hearing, Kevin Adams said that he wants to go through the process. Hey, learned a lot from the process of hiring the American League coaches. I think it's Zawisza. Move s. You can gain relationships so What are you hearing who could be interviewed and is dangling out of the front runner? I think you asked to be just because he's an internal candidate. It was proven on the job that he can do the job that the players have responded to him that he deserves more time. To help get hockey operations back on track s. Oh, that's my personal view of Don Granado and I look historically at his track record and the success that he has with young players and developing and that's what the Buffalo sabers are going to need moving forward. Beyond that I also tons of time for Kevin Adams and Jason Karmanos and the group going through this process. I mean, how do you experience and learn from it until you go through it? What's the rush? There's no rush in in any of this. It's not disrespectful to done Bernado that the season ends and you don't furnish him with Ah contract offer to be the head coach, moving forward. S o. You know, you look the usual suspects. We know that the jar Gallant whose head you lopped trio with Team Canada tomorrow. Two actors, Canada's head coach at the men's World championship, is interviewing and perhaps has already talked to Chris Story. With the New York Rangers about their vacancy. I'd be real surprised. If Rick talk it doesn't get a good look at that New York Rangers job. Why wouldn't Buffalo inquire on these guys? You know it Z not like I mean, there's a difference today, where the New York Rangers are as compared to where the Buffalo sabers are, and you look at some of the other teams with coaching vacancies, and I guess you could apply that same logic. But the men that we're talking about here Ondo experience, guys, especially in pocket and gland in Boudreau. I mean, our Boudreau story go down, the less these are the guys who wanna work in the National Hockey League again. And they wanna work. So you're just you're gaining experience. If you're Kevin Kevin Adams going to the process, But I'd be I'd be surprised if Don Bernardo isn't top of the list going in, or at least at whatever point they're in. The process now drag so many things in my mind right now and only a couple of minutes. So if and I loved on Granado, I think he's a great coach. But if they go that route, are we thinking rebuild for the sabers that's about the young players development. Not about plate making playoffs next year. It's about gradually getting better. Is that one in my second question is you talked about Chris Terreri World Championship..

"So looking back at the Don Granado tenure as the in term head coach of the Buffalo sabers. We like What he said he joins. Myself Howard and Jeremy every Tuesday morning at eight o'clock, We get his thoughts on the team. We get his thoughts on what's going on, not only with his team but also just kind of everything else that's going on. And There are a lot of things that don Granato has said. That we all loved to hear, and and Jeremy had the phrase. Put this quote on a banner from Don gonna Granato put it on a banner talked about Rasmus Darlene and just letting him kind of be himself. He also just wants the team to play their game and not worry about anything else not even worry about. You know the standings cause that the point he took over the team was already The worst team in the NHL, one of the worst teams in the NHL. I mean, when you took over, I think the losing streak at that point was at 12. Winless streak. However, you want to declare it. There should be a new record in the NHL, where it is losing losing streak after the salary cap era because that once the salary cap got established in 5 4006. There were no more ties. So you couldn't consider it a winless streak. You were going to lose a game and the sabers lost 18 straight games, but the NHL only wants to consider it a winless streak. That's fine. That's fine. Whatever. So Don Renato takes over in the middle of that winless streak. He misses one of the games because he had entered the cove in 19 protocols for a false positive test comes back the next day, rejoins the team and finally End of March. Savers almost went the entire month of March on a losing streak the last day of March. They break that 18 game winless streak with a 61 win over the Flyers. Very impressive, and from there Everything's gone fairly well for Don Granato. If you take out the five games That I that I think he coached. If I remember correctly, he coached five Kevin Adams did the one Don Granado, Technically. Is Faring pretty faring pretty well. I've got his hockey reference page for his coaching stats up at on my computer here and right now through 27 games. I think the record technically counts on him even that one game where Kevin Adams stepped in 9 15 and three Is his record in 27 games. Not great. But considering everything that has happened with the team and the turnaround that we've seen from some of these younger players, especially the Casey middle stats that age Thompson's the Rasmus aspirins we've seen are two routes the line and play really well. Night in and night out. We've also seen you know Dylan cousins, despite him, not scoring recently, he's been He's been contributing. He's been really putting in good efforts night in night out, and I don't think there's any question about Dylan cousins effort. I think he gives it 110% 110% of the time honors Bjork's since he came over in the Taylor Hall trade. He's really played incredibly well, playing all sorts of roles in this team. All the young guys. Rasmus. Darlene Henry. Okay, How are you on the blue line? These guys have really stepped up their game and if performed really well, Matisse. Samuelson, since coming in, has surprisingly been a good contributor for the sabers organization on the Blue line. With that. You know, we've also seen the older veteran players, some of them step up their games. Sam Reinhart has been electric since he has had Don Granato takeover. He's been arguably one of the better goal scorers in the entire NHL since then. Think Victor Olson's game has stepped up and has been much better since then. I think that we've seen a guy like Drake could jeweler even though he's only got a handful of games with the Saber since being claimed off waivers from Arizona. I think as of late, he's put in a lot of good efforts, and he's been really contributing towards a lot of positive things happening on the ice. And especially as of late. Jeff Skinner has started to come around with his game. He scored on the power play. Hey, who knew Jeff Skinner? Good on the power play? Ralph Krueger didn't know because he didn't ever play Jeff Skinner on the power play. Jeff Skinner scored his first power play goal the other night. Since the Phil Housley coaching era. The 18 19 season. Yeah. Spend that would spend that long. So Jeff Skinner gets there and that the rest of the team Seems like they've kind of been rejuvenated under Don Granato. Now you could look at that and say, OK, that's positive, but The team was already well out of the playoffs. Went down. Granado took over. Well out of the playoffs. So he takes over team starts to turn around. They play well. But they still finish last. They're still in dead last in the NHL. They're going to be dead last they're going to have the best odds of drafting with the number one overall pick. In this year's draft will get to the draft talk a little later with it. Steve Cornea knows This year's draft class. Is not a spectacular draft. Now coming up in the next two drafts. There's going to be Heck of a talent at the top, Not just one heck of a talent but a couple heck of talents at the top. However, you want to phrase that Couple of guys in the 2022 NHL draft and the 2023 NHL draft that have super star potential to their names. Lexi LA premiere last year, I said, was as pretty darn close as you can get to a generational player, and it didn't start all that well with the Rangers, but he was pretty good. This year. The crop of players are good, but there's nobody that stands above everyone else. And it's just like, Oh, this guy. This guy right here is going to be a superstar. Next two drafts after this one. The talent is incredible. At the top. Shane right, Brad Lambert next year. And the year after that, you've got Connor Bernard and Matt. Debate vich Cough in 23rd 2023. I'm 2013. I don't know why. But I mean the draft this year, the sabers finished. Amy. I think a lot of people around here don't want this team to finish last. I certainly am beyond The days back of mechanical years where it was just like you kind of wanted them to finish last..

"Whether you're playing on the road or at home, and this year was very few fans in the building it really if the fans are changing anything, either, so As far as Pittsburgh goes, you know, I wouldn't like put the pedal to the metal to come in the first place. I don't think it really matters what place you come in. But you could say it's an important game for Pittsburgh to try to get in the first place. I think in this division this year, that's completely right. I think there are exceptions to that myself like Carolina situation. Where you have the Lightning and the Panthers have been up there at the top with Carolina all year. There's probably an advantage there. There should be an advantage there. I mean, it's not there still gonna be what to win against like a Nashville like 60%, or some, like there should be your right and there used to be But I don't like having sex. How many years recently? But at least the last three years and I think it's probably more. It's basically been 50 50 in the playoffs as far as road teams and her anyway teams. Yeah, depends on the quality right like that's what I'm saying that homer away, but Carolina's gonna much rather play the four in that division, then Tampa or Florida. That's all the quite accomplish other up, right? So very good, Paul. We'll talk again later Sounds good sabers and pens. Here's Don Granato on tonight's starting goalie, Michael Hauser. So how's you'll start Reason? Lineup? Deacon's out. Um, He's got some soreness and he's outsourced. Uh, slide. Marie, in their border is gonna be out. Ah, probable for Saturday, but he's still dealing with some, You know, Minor injury issue there too. So what did Murray accomplish in Rochester? What'd you show the organization to receive this opportunity and the final week here? Uh, he just he did pretty much every player does. It deserves the chance. I mean, he was consistent, effective within his role, understood his role as an impact, obviously said, effective so impactful in that role. Um, And then he earned it. You know, he earned it. Are you amazed with how Hauser is just kind of kept focused on what's at hand here? I mean to do what he's been able to do. It doesn't seem to affect his game it all. Now he comes home to play in this arena in Pittsburgh in a U X just expecting the same thing. Even though it is there's gonna be some more pressure on him. Yeah, it's it is an amazing story. Um, And I amazed. Uh, just alright. Yes. When you don't factor in him as a person as a kid. Uh, you know, he's taken. He's a person has taken all of his life experiences. Ah ah and really the in preparation for what? May next lie ahead for him in that case, being in the NHL and thrown in a net. Um so You know when you factor all of that, and it's not too much of a surprise that he's been. He was really, really good in the first two games because you see that he did put that work in, but it is clearly an amazing story for him to jump right in and look S so quickly the way he does comfortable, you can tell. He put the time of the What kind of intrigues you about? Bet Marie. Obviously, he's a big body. He is a unique development path. Just what? What do you excited to see it from him? Yeah, Excited is the key word. I'm really excited to see my Washington training camp and he was. There were a lot of things he did in training camp were oppressive with his size frame and Um, you know, uh, intelligence around the net intelligence and awareness of what's around him line mate. Wise, situation wise, you know opposition, so he's got a real good feel for the game as well. It's more, you know, like a lot of young players or entry players getting aggravated with the patient, pro level and things like that. So I'm excited to see him now after having success in the American League. Um, but there's there's a lot to his game and in a lot of different ways, and what we have in our lineup, obviously with size factor..

"Hamilton taken over here on the Paul William Belts pregame show thanks to the bulldog for getting us up to this point. As we said, the Sabre's coming off of a wind. But when's the last time I said that? Well, actually, it was 19 games ago that I said they were coming off of a win. I know we can say if ands and buts but Brian Realistically, and I mean, realistically, we should be talking about a three game winning streak. Right now. I think which, with that being said, I've asked you this last night, but I'll kind of phrase that in a different manner here tonight. Is Don Granato. Getting through to these guys may be absolutely I was just that's what Pat Malecon couldn't find me. I was just having a conversation. Down the hall here with some of the media members and I think Don Granado is making a case for being the head coach of this team. We're getting the job. All right. Everybody can see That this team is better under him and improves every game. And in Don Granados case. He's doing it as more and more players of getting injured. I mean, yeah, they both had Ike a lot of the lineup. They both had McCabe out of the lineup. They both had all mark out of the lineup. All marks back. But now you have cousins out of the lineup, and more and more guys are going out of the lineup, But yet they're playing better. Significantly better, not just a little bit better. And if this continues, I don't think there's any question that Don Granato be the next coach of the Buffalo sabers to add to that list we found out today. Paul Curtis Lazar is now going to be out and he said Coach Fernando did what? It's more of a weekly We win Right? Lower body week to week type thing. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'm sure Kevin Adams would love to not have to go ahead and maybe search the world if the sabers played great here over this last month, and don Granato makes such a strong case, the jelly's gotta give him next year. Then I guess that's a good thing. A good problem, right? Well, I think what Adams would have to look at is here is a coach that's come in and has decided this is the team we have. This is what we have to do to get this team to play. Well, the other coach decided this is what has to do to play well in the NHL and I'm there is no negotiating. We must play this way, not realizing that he had a team that couldn't do it. He feels well, you better be able to do it because this is what we're going to do. Coronado is taking a different approach. And if he could start getting the best out of some of these players now, I don't know if you agree with me, But I thought Rasmus down. Lee might have his best game. Defensively I've seen all year. He and Yoki har. You played very well. And I thought that was a really bad idea. When I first saw it. What do you do it put those two together. Well, Jochi, how are you as look disasters? It was worse than Dolly. Yeah, worthy of being in and out of the lineup like he has been and what? I've liked them and one thing we saw the sabers had the morning skate. Not today, but the last game yesterday. And there was Darlene and Jochi. How are you with the White board? Going over some plays and things without a coach, even there, and I love seeing that I love seeing the two of them over there discussing different situations.

"Josh nor does ingles maybe going to give the sends brass something to think about before long. He's got four goals in the eight games. It's coming over from carolina the game itself to a four round shootout adam. Good debt of all people wanted beating philip guston and yes i said gustafsen. Because the sense of now brent through their top. Three options in goal murray injured. Marcus oberg injured now last night. Joey accord injured decor going from left to right in his crease. Look like he blew a tire all his weight on his left leg in the lay just seemed to can slip out from underneath him and he was down in a heap. Basically and Shot from the point comes in. Fortunately he was in. Just the right position to take the puck and the bread breadbasket. But i mean the injury could be ending groin. Knee ankle. didn't look very good though. So opportunity knocking now for philip gustafsen. He's the former top goalie from the world. Juniors came over from pittsburgh in the derek bussard deal and Like a stock has fallen a little but he came in and was very good in his. nhl debut. i'm sure he's all nerves. Adrenaline didn't show it though. Good in the shootout to by the way on that front the nhl needs to do something about the shootout. It seemed like every connect shooter came in going a mile an hour skating sideways across the ice. Even a couple of moments and there. They're going backward completely. Unfair the goalie and the shootout. I think is already a bad way to settle a game now. They just bears no resemblance at ottawa. Hockey play that said the three on three overtime was pretty badly played as well. You have any dadaab going off side and a clear to on one. Nobody near him. That was a joke. He went off side with thomas. Chabad carrying the puck on the far side. She bought at the end of a three minute. Shift there and continues to play too much almost thirty five minutes of ice time in that game. So that's the game in a nutshell sends off until monday. Now when they take on calgary more could shock action. Other nhl notes james. How the rangers there. Coaching staff must be wondering. If they're doing something wrong. See david quinn. And his whole staff for the rangers had to sit out the game due to covid and then their team goes out and bombs the flyers line nothing and how former senator necas advantage and nhl record with six points including three goals in one period. Six points in the second period. Who's actually nine nothing. After two periods no scoring there in the third so a crazy game there and finally the buffalo sabres have parted company with head. Coach ralph krueger. Sabres are well as say they've hit. The skids would be an understatement. There in the midst of a twelve game winless skid and the sabres finally said. That's enough of that. Buffalo has started the year. It was hard to imagine the sends would be ahead of somebody but they are and it is the buffalo sabres who wins eighteen losses and four overtime losses. Don granato takes over in the interim and it's just shocking that the sabres are as bad as they are. I didn't think they'd be good can be a a math. They might sneak into the playoffs. Chance.

"Score when we're we're tied or head. So we can only show when we're down a goal. So. Yeah, it makes a difference y'all. Soupy. You know, it's still a young, man. Right. So we have a game plan for him. We're going to try to get good angles on him. So he doesn't go coast to coast of the puck. Does he's done that already in the game. We played against them. So we're going to try to avoid that. So so who? All the all the all the campers and all the alums the legends who who's got the biggest game face. You're trying to have fun out here. But who's who's like which of these guys jammer is it is it someone else who wants he's out there on the ice? All of a sudden, he he kicks it into gear that maybe is a little bit too much. Yeah. You know? That's a good question. I think all of us have that in us. You know, especially when the team is down you could see the temple from the pro level. The pro guys are starting to pick up, and they try to get back to even with the with the team they're playing against so. Yeah, I you know, I know that. Big is I can make sure that they told me maybe ready for this game. Now want to win this thing, you know, because he's probably the best player along with in this event. So and that's why I got on my team, by the way. And. Let's not fixed. But the Frenchman stick together exactly you're telling me the other day to that before the Blackhawks took off for Colorado. They had an optional practice your but early in the morning is when this thing started on Friday, you save even Don Granato came in and did a little video session for everybody. And and you probably never been in a specially with Dhani. But you told me about how impressed you were. And and how easy he was able to communicate what they like to have done. Yeah. It was great. He was really really good. You know, I could see ways at this level. Now coaching is coaching minorities. College all that stuff. But he's he was very entertaining. One because the explanation was very easy to understand what he met in. What was one understand that you are as a player, you know, especially with a young team that we have here. And I'm sure he's still a lot of young players. You know, you had a good perspective on who you are what you need to do. So as a player, you get dented by what your strengths are and play within those strange. So it was admitted that in a bit of systems.
