"Messi to Major League Soccer makes sense. We also know for that same article per the athletic that Apple has a reported opt out. Clause with Major League Soccer, the TV rights deal. So it is absolutely a necessity to get somebody like Messi to drive up subscriptions. Now, whether somebody like apple comes in and offers an incentive to messy on the back end of those subscriptions or whether Don Garber and the league open up the idea of messy having stake ownership in inter Miami or another franchise Vegas, Vegas, then something can change, but right now, does this bring him closer? Yes, look at Neymar. Neymar is getting older. He's not a guarantee to be there to help you win. And it looks more frustrated by the day. We could see Mira Madrid very soon. Why would messy stay there? He's won everything there is to win. And there's no reason to stay. People around Messi and we have several reporters that know and actually have been reporting on our on the record saying this because remember a few months back, right after the World Cup, it was actually reported by some outlets that Messi was going to extend his contract with PSG. ESPN reporter said that's not true. He hasn't made up his mind yet. He has to wait and see what happens this season to know what he wants to do, what his next move is going to look like. I believe the things that have been going on at PSG have clearly drawn the path that he wants out. Yeah. And I'm not going to go into that. He didn't see that committed. What we spoke in some other platforms that I never saw you know Messi truly enjoying his time at PSG. So he's now moving on to a deeper and era. He won the walker with Argentina. It doesn't get better than that. That's it. What else can he achieve? What does he want to do? And he has said previously, messy and his own camp that living in the U.S., he actually owns property in Miami. If that helps, in any way. A lot of players, all these properties and south beach. But I do believe that it is now on messy score. The ball is now on misses court. I'm not concerned about the things that Major League Soccer can or can not do to bring him in. They're going to find a way because you have to find a way. If the opportunity is there, as a league, as an entity, you have to do everything that's in your power to bring the best player in history to Major League Soccer. So again, to me, it's not a matter of if, I honestly believe, believe it is a matter of when, at this point, will you know Messi. All according to the report by the athletic. Let's run

"News regarding Lionel Messi. It seems like his inching closer to a move to Major League Soccer, specifically to inter Miami according to a report by the athletic. In the report manager Phil Neville even talks about the things that would need to change in order to accommodate Missy in the team and how MLS commissioner has even said that the league and the team would have to think outside the box to craft a deal to land Lionel Messi in south beach. Taking his talents. To south beach, it seems like a true possibility. Now, did you just do that? Of course. I had to do it. And I hope he does it in the press conference and says that the exact boys and girls club. But he says Germain was just eliminated from the Champions League. They lost to Bayern. Yeah, 'cause it's march, and that's what happens. That's exactly what happens. Do you believe that actually brings this possibility closer that messy place Major League Soccer in the near future? Absolutely. Next season. Absolutely. According to this an article that Pablo maran Felipe carnes wrote, a source within inter Miami told them that it was all but done, waiting on messy. PSG out again, that's two for two at this stage in the round of 16. With Messi, that's 5 of the last 7 years. It's not going to happen from there. He's on standby with PSG. Saudi Arabia looks slimmer and slimmer by the day, especially when you think of messing what he wants to accomplish. Going back to Rosario with newells, where it all started, well, you know what happened to Anthony's father's market with the organized crime and being shot up, if you will. All signs point to enter Miami all signs point to Miami. Now, Don Garber spoke at length with the athletic about how would have to get creative. Back in 2007, the first year David Beckham took a 5 year $250 million offer plus an option to buy a franchise at 25 million and there was an activation clause that he had to play all 5 years for that to be triggered. Now Leon el

"Corner of the goal. Hercules Gomez strikes and what a great way to christen the new stadium. But it's not a viable solution for the Colorado rapids for them to be successful in that market. It's in Commerce City. It's a little ways out. It's hard to get to it's hard to get out of back when I used to play. You could see wild buffalo roaming around. So it is what it is. And it needs to change. Why have you here? Paul and yourself with the athletic spoke to Don Garber and brought up Messi. I know today, alongside Philippe carnes, you had another messy article drop in the athletic and I encourage everybody to go check that out. Messi, to MLS, specifically to enter. Obviously this topic was going to come up with commissioner. He mentioned how creative they might have to get to actually land him. He actually went into detail about David Beckham's deal back in the day with the LA galaxy, which was correct me if I'm wrong 5 years, $250 million with an option to buy a franchise and MLS franchise at 25 million, but he had to play all 5 years for that trigger to be activated. So my question to you is just how creative will Major League Soccer have to be to get messy and what do you think that creativity will entail? Reporting around this and I think part of what Felipe and I talked about in the piece is you can't get a straight answer to anybody. But my impression is that they're offering him a small ownership stake in the club a couple sources put around 5%. I mean, think about that, dude. They move into that new stadium, say the team is worth a billion or a billion and a half dollars, and that new stadium, 5% is a lot of money. It really motivates messy, I feel like it motivates him to come to the U.S. and the New York term drive the value of the franchise up by playing well by winning by being invested. It's a bigger return on his investment, you know. But I mean, I raised this in the piece like, what's bizarre to me is, all right, well, you're setting a crazy precedent. If you give this guy 5% of an MLS team, if you're an agent out there, if you're an agent who reps like Mbappé. If you're coming to MLS, you're not doing this without a percentage of a team. To me, that's the way these things work. I heard talk of maybe cutting them in on some of the real estate around the stadium. He messy already owns property in Miami and loves the place. So but dude, it's going to take us up and wild to get him to turn down a hundred mil or something from Saudi Arabia. That's what it is, right? Because Ronaldo is what, 200 million a year in Saudi Arabia. It's going to take something massive during my season. So my question here is any chance of one of two things. Another franchise being offered, I've heard Las Vegas. We know that Jorge Messi was with Don Garber commissioner Don Garber in Vegas in Las Vegas for the final of the U.S. mints nationally versus Mexico, gold Cup final in Vegas. And he talked about another franchise. Maybe it'd be in Vegas. And two, any chance of Apple stepping in here because it would be really interesting for me to see Apple come in and offer a subscription based incentive for them on the back end to kind of sweeten the deal. Well, on the franchise thing, I mean, I just can't see it, dude, because when they offered Beckham that $25 million option, I mean, it was a good deal, but the expansion feedback done was like 50 or something like that. You look at the most recent deal in Charlotte, whatever it was, 360 five, I think. And I mean, I've done some reporting around San Diego. By all indications, that's going to be 500 million plus 5 50 million some like that. I think these fees are just too big. I mean, unless it's a thing where they tell messy, you know, we'll give you a franchise for two 50 or something like that, but if you're Leo Messi, do you even really want to put that money into the league, you know? As far as the apple thing, I don't know, man, I can tell you that I wasn't in these conversations, but you have to imagine that when MLS was working out, it's most recent media rights deal with Apple. The name Massey came up like dozens of times. I'm sure, right? Right. You saw it in Garber's comments to Paul and I, the league is happy to be attached to this player. It does, you know, it's good for them image wise. And I'm sure they probably weaponize that when it comes to their most recent negotiations with Apple. I would mention herc that somebody else put on is Apple, I believe, has an opt out of this agreement. Again, I did some reporting around this and from what I can discern. It seems to be tied to the number of subscriptions that MLS will have after X number of years, right? And I tell you it's much men the number of subscriptions I heard from multiple people. It's not something I was able to pin down and put in a piece was what I would say unattainable. My view is, if Apple wanted to bail on the MLS deal after a few years, they probably could. Assuming that all that stuff is above board, or they could maybe come to MLS and say, hey, you know what? Let's renegotiate this. You know what I mean? These are smart people. They definitely need a messy type figure to drive those subscriptions. It would be great for the league and if Don Garber can be the man to land messy in the states, I will raise a Bud Light to him. Absolutely. I will tell you this. Saudi Arabia, maybe not in Messi's family's plans. PSG is a very tricky situation there. They seem to be leaving the door open to leave Barcelona seems like it's nonexistent. And well, going back to Newell's is childhood club Rosario's not the safest place in the world right now. His wife, antonella, her father's supermarket, was actually shot up by organized crime. So definitely a lot of factors that could lead messy to south beach and at south beach Pablo, who doesn't want to be in south beach. It is undeniable that a place like Miami in a place like the United States still has this mythical pull to athletes from abroad. It just does. I mean, whether it should or it shouldn't, it does.

"From the pitch the Plaza, part of the pregame show hosted by Grammy Award winning artist Anderson .Paak. And producer DJ metro boomin. Pumping up the crowd in St. Louis before that big three one win against Charlotte. On their first home game, this past Saturday, March 3rd. Second win in a row, 6 points in two games, way to start for St. Louis city SC. To talk more about some of these electric atmospheres we're seeing, the new franchises. And what some of the old heads in the original clubs in the league could learn from them. I'm here today with Pablo Maui. Of the athletic, my man, how you doing? I'm good. Thanks for having me. Good to see you. First, I'm sure you saw the atmosphere in St. Louis. Give me your overall impressions of what that was like to you. How ridiculous that was. It seemed like a pretty wild scene. It's strange in that we have one of these games every year, I guess. And it seems like by and large, all these teams enter the league somehow with sizable followings already. So I wouldn't say it was anything out of the ordinary in terms of what you expect from an MLS expansion franchise at this point, but it was wild. I mean, I guess it helped that they were getting the ball passed to them inside the box by the NRT. This horse string of quasi own goals they've benefited from in the past couple of weeks, but yeah, obviously it's hardening to see. All right, that's what I want to talk about because obviously it seems like every time an expansion team comes into Major League Soccer, it almost feels easier to succeed than some of these teams that have already been around for a while and your article with Paul scenario, which was a great arc on the athletic you guys to check that out. You spoke about governance changes with commissioner Don Garber, commissioner Garber had this to say. Those changes are part of a larger project related to governance out of which a club performance group will be launched. And MLS university, so to speak, a concept to help guide these clubs and ensure that owners are aligned on doing what they need to do to drive the relevance and to drive the business forward, and to make the right investments so that our teams are more meaningful in their markets. That's what Garber said. All right, let's dive into this MLS university, if you will, this performance group, is it identifying underperforming MLS franchises and teaching them how to be successful? On Twitter and the piece I use D.C. 9 as an example, but I mean, if there's any number of franchises, I would say the bulk of the MLS originals and some of the older even so those teams that joined a few years after 96 are kind of struggling relevance wise. I mean, MLS is always sort of leaned on the newer sexier teams to kind of craft the image of the whole league. I mean, you see full stadiums and LAFC or even you go back further to Seattle, teams like that. Austin and newer team that sells out a lot in Nashville. But in the background there, I mean, you have those teams like D.C., New York Red Bulls, another one, FC Dallas, Colorado rapids, all these teams that are, I mean, to put a bluntly man kind of irrelevant in their market. I do think this club performance group thing is I guess aimed at maybe trying to get some of these lagging underperforming teams back in shape. If only it were that simple, I don't even know what this sort of cloud performance group so called MLS university is going to look like. I don't know if it's going to have any teeth, right? I mean, like are there penalties for not hitting a tenant symmetric or X, Y, and Z thing? I mean, who knows? But I mean, I'll say point blank, it's good to hear the league office talking about this. Because previous years, I mean, there's almost not even an acknowledgment that you have these franchises that are just sort of withering away after years. Some of these clubs are sleeping giants though, the San Jose earthquakes of the world, the D.C. united to the world. I remember growing up in Vegas. I had el salvadorian friends and all my salvadorian friends were D.C. united fans. I'm talking about raul Diaz arce, you know, posters on the wall, each of every posters everywhere. Talking about the Barra brava and they've never been to D.C.. Man, what is it? Four MLS cups, three open cups, a cocktail champions cup, the Copa inter Americana, for those of you who don't know, those at Vasco de Gama, the glory years. That was a legit team. You know, D.C. to me probably is the most clear example of all these teams because of the market. Because the market is like multicultural soccer savvy, they're deep roots here. The history of the game here is crazy, and so, you know, if you look back on this glory years and even maybe some of those years in the mid 2000s, the amount of, I guess, goodwill that has sort of been squandered in this market is insane. I mean, on football America, savvy talks about it all the time. You should go play there and there were like flares in the stands. Smoke's coming out like this. You thought you were all of a sudden in South America. Like la Barra brava was dancing, it was present. It was vibrant. It was an RFK. There were years from, let's

"Indeed PSG make it through against fine. Speaking about the possibility of Lionel Messi going to MLS, this is what the MLS commissioner Don Garber said. Teams have the flexibility to do unique things to transfer market is just exploding in ways that are unimaginable. We're going to have to structure a deal that's going to compensate him in ways that he and his family expect what that is. Honestly, we don't know, but it's probably not going to be a targeted allocation money. And it just briefly, what does that mean? What does targeted allocation money? Well, it's cam and it's a designation of a player that you have you have found and you are allowed to spend a certain amount of money for that player. Right. Well, of course, Messi doesn't qualify as that because you would have to spend a whole lot more money than it is designed for that specific type of player. Messi is going to have his own category regardless. Right. It's just funny that he feels the need to explain. Maybe he was in a jokey way. Well, he got me laughing. It was funny. He's going to stay up here she though, isn't he Jules? Well, there's still the feeling and suddenly they've got an agreement in principle between him and his father and the club. They just they are talking that they had a meeting earlier. At the end of February, they would meet again in March to try to find the full agreement where he signed the paperwork, the contract with us to two years, one plus one, extension, they still have to talk that through with the feeling in Paris is very much that he wants to stay and maybe he's just waiting and see where this game goes by and then we mentioned on Tuesdays go in to see how we feel about next season before completely making his mind up because we know that one day he wants to play MLS, whether this is this summer or the following summer or in two, three, four, 5 years. So no matter we know the basilar, well really the other option, the third option that we know as Teva said yesterday, they can't sign anybody this summer because they just don't have the money. They don't have space in the wedge band. Nothing like that. Let alone Messi and these huge contracts. So it looks like it's a final between PhD and the malays really an into Miami more even than MLS. But I agree with I agree with Ali. I mean, I love when people state the obvious. I'm not sure that I had to say it like that, but imagine you can sign me seriously, I'm sorry that we can only make you a DP and because too much money. So you have to go somewhere else. I mean, come on, of course, that would make the effort if they can sign him to make sure that they do sign in. It's so obvious. Well, the big question is where will the dog be happier, Jules? In Miami or in Paris. Oh.

"This has been a mech technology. I'm Caroline Hyde in New York. Now the sun valley conference is underway, of course, in Idaho, with many of the world's top business leaders gathering there to talk deals to talk Musk and he's also expected there this weekend, of course. Ludlow joins us now. You've got another special guest, and this one, well, people say soccer, you and I, we'd call it football. We call it football. And I get to talk about my two favorite things. Technology and football will call it soccer. Don Garber major league MLS commissioner, you struck a deal with Apple. Ten year deal, stream, direct to consumers around the world that want Major League Soccer MLS. Why Apple? Well, you know, they're the perfect company for us, you know, innovative, aggressive ambitious, really thinking hard about what their future is going to be in the sports streaming place. For us, every game, anywhere in the world, on any device is perfect for our young and very digitally native fan base. I'll rate a percent of our fans are streaming soccer or football anyway, so we couldn't really predict it better. Well, let me ask you this. Why not an Amazon or why not a linear TV package with some of the names you've been associated for the last decade? Well, we'll still have some linear deals will announce those soon. So it's the combination of linear and then games that we'll have in front of the Apple paywall, games on Apple TV plus, and then most exciting for us, you know the first global director consumer subscription channel, as you've mentioned, which is really going to break new ground for how we'll connect with our fans, whether it's somebody that's watching a game here in sun valley or they're watching it in Spain or they're watching in South America there. They're the perfect partner to be thinking about how do we become a global league in the most global sport. Apple reportedly paid $250 million. I don't know whether you can confirm that's accurate, but what are they getting out of this? Is there actually a belief that Apple will grow its Apple TV plus or its own subscription audience? Because there's a demand for MLS. Well, you know, it's a multi-billion dollar deal over time. And I mean, for them, this is the perfect way for them to be thinking about the live sports experience for their consumers. So what it meant to them is a good question for Apple. As I mentioned for us, when we were thinking about aggregating all of our content, our local games, our youth matches, our second division, which is called MLS next pro. Every game that we have, whether it's in market or out of market, you now have an experience for a fan that is unprecedented. And that for us is really, really exciting. Does it bring you a global audience? Without doubt. So as you know, we just signed Gareth Bale, comes over from Real Madrid, he's playing in Los Angeles. And maybe there's some small Argentinian guy that might come to our league. I've seen some reports at some point. So you could think that you'd have as many subscribers and fans in Buenos Aires or in Barcelona or in Madrid or in Wales when you sign global players where global league needing a global platform. And this will give us that opportunity to expand the breath and scope of our media business. Football or soccer has been soccer. Soccer is grown enormously in North America, right? You've gone from a situation where you're almost at 20 19s with the expansion three stadiums dedicated to soccer to now 26, something like that. Where do you invest next? Is there another deal to be done? What is that? How do you grow to the next step? It's a great question, you know, it's ten to $15 billion in investment in the league over the last number of years. A lot of that is in these unique, almost cathedrals for the sport, these 26 stadiums that you mentioned. We opened up a brand new one in Nashville, Tennessee, 30,000 fans, it sold out every game. Now the move is on content. So how do you invest in delivering the right experience with our local teams and in many ways being content delivery producers for our new service. How do you now think about the next generation of development of our player pool so that when we have the ability to develop young players, sell them overseas, big announcement of two X MLS players going to the Premier League today? That's right. Bringing in young players in their prime that are playing overseas, being a global player in both the purchasing and selling of players, there's going to be an enormous amount of investment out in the years to come. Two quick questions. The men's soccer team going to the World Cup. Does that boost the MLS? Or without doubt, you know, the interest in our league grows with our national team playing in the World Cup. We see those boosts of interest in energy. Our league was born out of the 1994 World Cup and imagine the rocket fuel that will have leading up to the 2026 World Cup but beyond the fact that we'll have so many young American players, 40 or 50 of our players will play in for national teams that will be in the World Cup. So we have players from 70 different countries playing in Major League Soccer more than any other league in the world. The World Cup is the showcase of platform for that. Before I run out of time, there's a chap called Todd boley who bought a club called Chelsea, which I've supported for the majority of my life, as you know. He says that the Premier League is undervalued. Our clubs in the MLS undervalued. Do you know this? I think the value in sports is driven by ultimately what the opportunity is, what people are willing to pay and have owners, if you will, the league has been able to exploit their intellectual property. I do believe our teams are undervalued and Todd could speak better about what he thinks about the Premier League. What I'll say is that the future of our league and the future of the sport in America is so bright and there's so many endless opportunities with the overall diversity of our consumer base, the fact that we'll have more teams and more stadiums, our best years, particularly with a new partnership with Apple. I just saw that you mentioned the new IMG arena supporting exactly what we did. There's so many great intellectual property opportunities that we've not yet even fully exploited. So best days are still ahead. All right, all eyes on American football or soccer MLS commissioner Don Garber is just a pleasure to have you here on the show talking football in tech Caroline. If you're a Stafford bridge right now Ed, what would you sing? We all followed that. No, I'm not going to do it on air Caroline. Beautiful. So as if you're transported us there at ludlow, we thank you so much. Meanwhile, let's talk about a bit more sport, but athletes within it. An Apple watch with a bigger display larger battery and a rugged metal casing. Maybe in the works apple is seeing, well, it's said to be building a new version of the smartwatch for extreme sports athletes who makes them up, Gorman, joins us now. No singing. But certainly, let's talk about the watch. And how big is this market? You know, I think I want to take a step back and figure out why would Apple do something like this, right? If they're going to create a new high end Apple watch, a

Wow this guy's looks almost kinda like you can just run guys at will and he was just causing so many problems throughout that whole playoff. Run for the reps. And then you're saying maybe that's a better spot for him because it gives them some space to build into it and one on one hadn't really clicked for him as a winger in the past and then just in a matter of six or eight months you look you look around. And he's just killing. Mexico's getting step overs. He's playing on the riot. He's playing on the left like he's getting important goals. He's creating a nuisance in the box. One on one. I think probably if not the most dangerous player one of the most dangerous players just so shifty so quick and has just been phenomenal now. That's why i think he's not going to be around long whenever he does decide to go wherever he decides to go Teams are coming in for him. And that's why. There's added urgency for the revs to look and say same thing probably with turner as well to say this is our year like we need to sell out all in on. Mls cup because this is really a huge opportunity. And we've seen other teams in the past that have maybe not maximized it or lost players and then it's really hard to kind of recreate that magic. "As the greatest player of this generation. Forget about winning. International title. Like obama medico or the world cup. That's been the biggest knock on messy. You know when people think leona lewis. Yeah he's good but is he going to play for inter really make them good but hey let's be honest A week ago we were kind of fission. Now i feel like when everybody starts talking about it more and more and more like this is really going to happen at some point. It's going to happen and it's going to be pandemonium like david beckham to the galaxy. A watershed moment for the league. I don't care what age you get messy. If he has any thing left in the tank it's going to be a parting of the waters again. For major league soccer going to have one of the best players to ever play the game. Stadiums will be full. People will go crazy. He may not want to be part of that late night circuit. They will ask for them. Because even if you aren't a soccer fan you know you've heard messy. You've heard of this little argentinian. You've heard about this wizard as so yes things will get crazy. And if you're don garber if your if massive david beckham and you can get him you do everything your power elsewhere in qualifying some old. Us foes dropping by the wayside eliminated after zero zero draw against score south who actually advanced to the next round. Incredible story here. what. The mother was perfect. They didn't allow a single goal in qualifying going home. Yeah ten points out a possible twelve. You know what the worst thing is here. No home in a way. The game was played in the south and they go on goal differential. One more goal for three wins. One draw for what the marlins still eliminated trinidad and tobago. They're out as well after zero zero. Draw against the bahamas hurt. You're asking the bahamas any good. They were ranked two hundred. I in the latest rankings. This is not. This is nice but if you're a us. Ms national team player fan. That's a to less places where you've suffered and Recently yep boy shocking his lap over on espn afc was telling me man federation down. There is a mess starting to affect the national team. Quick transfer talk. Psg look set to sign on room up from acm along the young goalie on a free transfer. It uses twenty two years old. The weird thing here is they already have a world class goalie. psg and that's gaylord novice. What do you make of this hurt. When i was going to be thirty five soon Gianluigi lunar. I'm going to be there for five years. Seventy three million dollars so he's not coming to sit behind him. They're thinking about their future from kayla's seriously again. This is happening again. "On spending and keep trying to win. I applaud that. It can't be that stan. Kroenke opens up a stadium in his home country. North america in beautiful denver. Colorado doesn't show up for the opening. I don't know if he's ever set foot in the stadium that he opened of the team that he owns. It is what it is a major league soccer. And i understand the frustration from don garber. And i understand as the commissioner how that's a shot you're taking one of the owners but show me the line. It's a salary cap league right there. We're already trying to control costs and the salary cap this. Here's what four point. Nine million dollars you compare that to the nba nfl nhl. Any major sport here in the united states it's a drip in the bucket. So mls owners are the big spenders. That don garber in that quote at least might want to make them out to be her also think there are some cheapskate owners. And i know it. Because i'm in washington. Dc and. i don't know if you remember the story because it came out a few months ago in the athlete but some great reporting by pablo mauer dc. United had its front office. Staff doubling as surveillance at night of audi field during the pandemic. if that ain't clipping coupons turk what is that's one of a thousand examples Teams cut out there academy programs. What does it didn't these united didn't they just haven't evaluation. How much is this united worth now. So yeah mark ingram bought into the team and they said seven hundred million dollars the Report evaluation of these united. Never have we have heard an exaggeration in american soccer before speaking of exaggerations in american soccer a lot of people said that on this show last week. We were exaggerating. We hit out of this with all this messy to inter miami. Get ahead of yourself. Guess what you ask. The guy in charge you as a commission about messy to major league soccer. What do you have to say don. All types of stars are linked to major league soccer all the time this just happens but messy to inter miami has been linked recently. What a player of mris caliber do for the league. Melissa messy is. He's got right messy is like the great player in our generation Goat if you will so know in my opinion right. I think most people have their own version of who the goat is but you know obviously when players like that are talk talking about major league soccer. It's good for our league but at the end of the day and when you were in the league the league at a different strategy right we needed to bring in players that tend to have been at the end of their career and now we have you know however many players i think it was twenty of the players that beat mexico in the nations league. Final came up moss academies. i'd rather see our owners go deep into ensuring the creating a christian pulisic ensuring that they're playing comp- creating all the great players that have come through our county a canadian and alfonso davies. Right a great player like mckinney. Who came through fc dallas and if a messy can fit in their great but that should not be arm narrative. Narrative is what we're doing to develop great world class players. I'm glad you brought that up because a messy coming in at the thirty six thirty seven years of age when major league soccer's actively trying to shed this retirement league image. Does that matter. It does matter who but you know. It's funny. I've been dealing with this for since before we had designated players and i remember everybody saying boy. David beckham was over the thirty one years old. You played i think so you thirty seven all come on. I played thirty. Four hundred thirty four okay. So but you're still playing. And i thought you were pretty darn good was okay so i think when you start seeing how there are certain players that could compete at a level. They're just. i mean tom. Brady's pretty old guy right and look. This is npr super bowl. Look at ebro. so abra comes here. And people say he's retiring and then he's starring in europe so i don't think you could put a tag on age. I think it's about the broader narrative. Are we using our resources to bring in only older players at the end of their career or having a set example of a couple of them and if they're great players in their over thirty years old that that's great but our core investment should be on developing young players and bringing an exciting players whether they're from south america or the other parts of the world that could thrill inspire and drive our audiences. Don garber him on this topic anyway. Singing from the same hymn sheet a little bit. Here's so i to say about it. I'm optimistic messy will play an inter miami shirt because i think it will. I can't say this to the strip is complete the legacy of the greatest player in our generation. And we'll meet the ambitions of the owners of inter miami to build a world class team Hurt does messy need to play in pink to.

"I am 6 40 live everywhere on the I heard radio app. Story today. President Biden is going to be meeting with Boris Johnson, the British prime minister here in just a few minutes. As a matter of fact, talking about a bunch of things we got new numbers from Labor Department, the number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell for the sixth straight week. As we continue to to reopen here. Labor Department said that jobless claims fell by 9000. The number of people signing up for benefits did exceed 900,000 back in early January. But we have been on a steady decline ever since. Joe wants to know if you want a breakfast burrito. Mm. No, not in love with the idea, okay? Already had a slice of banana bread today. Kim Jong un also passed on the breakfast burrito. Yeah, What's going on with that guy he is last is losing. He's lost weight. And what does it all mean? So little information comes out of the hermit kingdom that you're just scraping around for crumbs as to what they have planned. What's going on? They say if he simply slimmed down to be healthier than that likely improves his position at home and provides more predictability, perhaps for other actors in the area like Japan, South Korea. And the United States who may have greater confidence that he actually is running the show. However, if his sudden weight loss is due to a health condition and not appellate on, it looks like the jockeying for his Thrown maybe already happening behind the scenes and that that volatility could mean trouble for the outside world, because what are they going to do to get to that position? And what kind of splash will they make? If you saw somebody that you hadn't seen for a while, and they lost weight? Would you in immediately assumed that they were sick? Well, here's the thing. It's Kim Jong un. This is a guy who loves access, right and in every in every way From what we've heard about him. He's not somebody who's going to be disciplined to get on the peloton. He's not going to be some be someone who's disciplined to just have vegetables and lettuce and water and no carbs. You know he's not going to go keto on us. He just doesn't have that self discipline. So it's totally plausible that it's a health issue. Because how else do you drop weight that quickly Unless you have extreme self discipline well, and if you've got that much weight to lose, it can be noticeable. I mean, if you're up over £300, and you dropped 40. People are going to people going to notice. I mean, your clothes fit different. I mean, as an example, one of the news agencies went so far as to compare enlarged images of his wrist. His wrist over the last few months. They took a picture from November and they showed that his $12,000 watch looked like a rubber band around a piece of sausage at that point back in November, But more recent photos show him wearing that same watch. And the strap is actually a little bit loose on his wrist. And they're saying that that is the proof that he, in fact has been losing weight now. Who knows the Hermit Kingdom line. I mean that that phrase is a perfect example are a perfect picture of what we're dealing with in terms of trying to get information out of there. The other. Uh The other thing they did was when Um, when Kim Jong un met with The South Korean president Moon A few years ago, one South Korean newspaper sat a bunch of experts in of room and had them watch footage for hours to try to figure out What they could about this guy's health and his body. And they suggest that all they came up with seven hours later was that it looks like the guys wearing lifts that he's wearing insoles. So he looks taller compared to other leaders. We saw that when he met with President Trump. I mean, that guy was wearing six inch heels. It looked like like giant platform shoes because Donald Trump is a huge person. He's a tall guy, and he's 62 or 63. And, uh, up against the guy who is at best five ft. 10, maybe and three bills. Made Donald Trump looked like a giant strong fit person. Maybe maybe he enlisted doctor now. Maybe Kim Jong un put himself in a minivan and made his way to Houston, Houston. Doctor now put him on a strict diet of boiled chicken, and he dropped the weight. Mm. He didn't have anyone sneaking him. McDonald's in the hospital like you see from time to time or a couple of pizza, the enablers. That sounds good. Remember the father and the son and the and the father kept bringing the sun? Always meals? Well, listen was like this weird and they was it goes beyond enabling, doesn't it? It goes beyond it goes beyond the physical. Yes, they're going to move much emotional stuff that goes into if you're going to get to six bills or seven bills or eight bills. In some of those cases, there's so much more emotional. Baggage and work that they have to do. So much more so than just the physical, right, cutting down there what they're eating and exercise. It's the same thing as intervention, except that involves meth. Right. It's like it's not just about the math. It's the whole emotional aspect. I think we've all learned. It's never just about the milk. We've done some real work this morning, and it's only 7 30. We haven't even asked Jennifer who else is coming? Besides her parents? How much room do you have? For all these people? I don't think enough. Do you need a tent? I could bring a tent. Funny. There's a tent that we put up in one of our bedrooms for my nephews to sleep in. Just last night. We literally put up a tent. That is very funny. How does Scott do with the whole family moving in last night? Scott's coming to my house. That's what he elsewhere last night. Gary's number. Gary's Got the space. The Yoga teacher is not there anymore. It was a Pilates instructor. Why does that matter? I don't No. But why can't you get it right carry? "Saying that. We need to be a global brand. Ironically joey pseudo saying that the montreal impact had have an impact. And the only way to do that is for them to no longer be the impacts and the reality is mark there still really only one. Mls team on all six inhabited continents that has a global brand and it's the galaxy. There's only one galaxy. As far as i know in football if we're excluding the couple years there with La decima or real madrid in them on informally. Being known as the galactic goes on they they. They signed david beckham. They've continued to have a trend of global superstars who for the most part had major impacts on their franchise. And they win a whole bunch. Everybody remembers newark rebels. Now because a terry on re and now they're part of a football group we say similar things of new york city f c where. They're kind of in certain pockets. They have global or they have an international brand rather than just a local or national brand. I would say seattle atlanta has done that as well with some of their recent success in the also the atmosphere that they have their stadiums. That's unique and appealing in the same way that you know fans everybody at this point knows about darkman because of the wallerstein and the and the yellow wall and everything and we kind of throw toronto. Fc in there and so. This is a marketing solution. This is the marketing answer. Who question that nobody asks in ultimately trying to use something else and similar to the super league mark assuming oh the fans will get over it. They'll accept it because their fans which again is just another slap in the face up will we. We're just gonna roll out a white kit because it's cheaper dita's is giving us a bunch of money and so we all wanna make profits on this and fans will just buy it because it's gonna be a new kit and they're just going to it and then same thing for now regretting and so apparently the answer to all of this mark isn't having your own appeal or your own nickname or anything it's going with the generic european name mark. You know. we don't know. I i couldn't tell you whether plymouth argyle are in league wanderley right now but somebody has argyle. I know exactly. You're talking about their twitter. Handle folks is there is only one argyll because there is only one article now. Somebody refers to see se in mls. I don't know who that is city. I would inherently think nyc not because of anything they've done but because they play in new york city. Thank god mark. There's only one other rapid team unless risky you an australian. Everybody knows who we're talking about ready to go all right. You don't want to say anything else. There mark you said then you covered it really. Well no i. I was like you were going and you were going. You're going and i was like he's going to keep going isn't it. He's not gonna come up for air those good You covered it really. Well a thing. The only thing i can add so one. I'm gonna disagree with you on one note. Which is i. Don't think this is directed on. I don garber I don't think that this is an attempt by the league to become homogeneous and a global brand in the sense that like by everybody goosestepping at falling into line and some sort of fascist collective. Mls it'll improve the the brand. And i think your point about the galaxy point which is that like. There are some global brands within mls. They don't adhere to or hugh to some sort of Extremely homogenize dull you know. Mls the everything league afterwards. Kind of sensibility to that To to disagree slightly is the fact that you know single entity and the deal with adidas that you mentioned about like kind of homogeneity of the kids already kind of makes the league a little bit less like hurting cats than a lot of the european teams. I mean i think one of the one of the things that a lot of people value about the european genes is that like you know. Dortmund's kit Teat sponsor is hummel And you know byron's is adidas. I don't know actually don't who does fires but like the bootleg has you know. Twenty teams and twenty different kids sponsors in twenty different s that x twenty different websites setup since so on and the herding cats like those different teams makes it a little bit kind of wild willy. The wild and wooly is really the cool part about mls that that's the part that we're missing. Say what you will about the names themselves. But they certainly were unique. You know the early. Mls teens who are no longer around. The most the originals include an. I mean the names are no longer around. Some of the teams clearly still are the dallas burn miami fusion kansas city. Wiz not wizards wiz The montreal impact and the new york jersey metrostars and possibly going away. The of the dodo like those names is the columbus crew It is yet to be really clear to me whether this crew rebrand. You know they seem to be saying like we're gonna kinda go by columbus sc but We'll always the crew and some of that seems like ex post facto Rationalization after the incredibly terrible reception by grew fans of of this new round but that being said like there isn't really fun. Quirky names in world soccer. Fc palestino down in south america There's the go ahead eagles. I mean you vent. This is an extremely creative and unique name. It's like it's a latin term for the young acts in amsterdam. If you didn't know already that i was in amsterdam you wouldn't know that. Aston villa In in birmingham in like that's a these teams pick names that have nothing to do with their city that are not identifiable by them and they're not boilerplate like united or whatever and they're fun. You know bolden launders another one right like those. Those names are fantastic. Where a team didn't have a home pitch. So they played a lot of away games so they got the nickname of the wanderers and got stuck like those are wonderful things. That kind of lindsay is what american soccer added. Nineteen ninety six when we had to cop with goofy color palettes and goofy nickname for all the teams and now a bunch of these teams are like. I don't really want to have a goofy name. I wanna be a knockoff of a european team and like okay. Like i actually think that the kansas city wiz rebranding this morning. It's probably a good move. I mean whizzes. Something you associate with the men's bathroom more so than you to a sport. A sports team and dallas burn is very similar in the sense that If we're gonna continue with the concept of the kansas city wiz dallas burn. Sounds like something you go to your. Kansas city. Wiz wasn't going very well right like you go see a doctor about that. But other than that all these other teams you know the galaxy the sounders the timbers the rapids. they're funny. They're goofy their american. They're extremely heart of our american. Ethos and i think that It sat the crew. Wanna go in this way. It's it speaks really to wear owners are and the very last thing. I'll say matt this penny Penny smart pound foolish mentality of owners. Which is that if we rebrand. We'll get a whole bunch of new fans will sell a whole bunch of new merchandise and it will be you'll see a jump. We'll see a spike in our revenues. Now one hundred fifteen percents. Okay what do you think amongst rapids twitter amongst rapids fans people who would have gone to games last year in the normal time. People listening to this podcast. What do you think. Don garber approval rating is right now. Dr carver's rating. I mean all all all commissioners get booed is. It's like that's your job. Your job is to promote the brand Create synergies with corporations and get booed like you get rally it now. That being said actually hate don garber less than probably your average mls fan. That's possibly because. I'm a rabbi. And i generally think nice things about most human beings. I see. There is good in him yet. You know. I see him the way luke. Susannah can skywalk sony so in any case marked on garbage approval rating amongst amongst the rapids. Faithful is less than their approval. Rating of co bassett virtual. Okay and then rhetorical question generally. How much like rapids fans collective approval rating or favorability rating. Towards. mls owners. As a whole and stan kroenke you get my point. So right i think the issue here is that the league in the owners are obviously trying to negotiate with the actually one but then also put it in a position where they can blame the players then the angry mob on twitter and our group think flips on the players we pressure the players thus further giving them a stronger advantage of the actual negotiating table. Completely forgetting there is nothing. Roger goodell could do at this point that would collectively get all nfl fans to like him more than the nfl or their team or their players specifically..

Coronavirus Covid-19 Impacting Soccer
"There's a lot of stuff that I wanted to get to I'm glad you're on the first one being the situation I guess with the Colorado rapids that seems to be what is most pressing right now they've had more matches postponed due I guess A. Term Run. Virus outbreak within the club would where do we stand right now with them with the status of this outbreak when they resume playing again where things at that club I mean they're in a bad spot. Just, an on all manner of fronts I mean. The the big one obviously is the the human angle to it I mean there's five players thirteen staff. It's just been a drip drip drip of positive cases and just you know periodically talking to people in Colorado. Well, we haven't had positive case in the last few days. We think we're we're past this and then they get another positive test, and so you're the latest impact all this I mean, there were four games postponed before to those have been rescheduled. But now last night at umbrellas that three more games. I think th through the twenty first of October. Have also been postponed, and so now there's a real question as to whether they're going to be able to get these games in and I mean there is kind of a precedent. For dealing with postponements and cancellations Back. When when nine eleven happened. You know the leagues still had I think two weeks to go in the regular season. and. They just basically called those games off and used points per game to decide. You know who who who got placed where in the standings and seating for the playoffs and It had an impact on the supporters shield too because in that year, any Miami and Chicago and the same number of points and Miami. Got It based on head to head whether that was the rule before they decided to cancel those games are not I who knows but there I mean there were still trophies at stake now, I'll grant you that the supporters she wasn't as big a deal back then as it is now but. I guess it's a long winded way of saying there is a precedent for this and so and just in talking to the League in the past twenty, four hours, they are prepared and Don garber on record saying we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA go points per game route if it comes to that. And so. I think what you've got is a real mess and then on top of all that you've got a couple positive cases in Minnesota. To staff positive cases in Columbus another positive player in Orlando And so these cases are starting, you know starting to to accumulate and so. You know I think it calls into question again, the wisdom of how much farther into the season do you go? And at what point? Does the League just kind of cut bait? I, mean now the League is saying. They can't envision any scenario where the the season doesn't get completed somehow some way in some form. but it's I mean, it's sobering to say the least I mean it's You. Know you're you're not only talking about people's health but professional athletes for whom health is just a huge huge. Aspect of their lives and. Able to get on the field. So it's. You know the League is continuing to push along, but it's it makes me kind of look at it like man is this is this really worth it? I don't know if it's if it's premature to suggest this but you know the bubble for the back tournament seemed to work. Is there any consideration being given to going back to that for postseason? I don't think so I think the bubble. Everyone remembers how well it works. There were no positive cases inside the bubble. Now, some positive cases were brought into the bubble and then. Obviously Dallas Nashville had to leave but I think. There's a human cost to that as well because guys are GonNa be away from their families. You know especially, at least for the teams that that make deep all the way to West. Cup final. But. From what I the Best I can tell is that that's not something that's being considered and not only that but the league is is standing holding fast to its December Twelve Cup final. So there's no there's no wiggle room in terms of pushing the the season back a week or two I mean obviously if you push. Push molest cut back a week you're getting awfully close to the Christmas holiday. Just, a difficult situation all around and but it does make you kind of question the wisdom about you know how how many more positive cases can can the league handle before they decide this isn't worth it.
