"This is Rob Johnson, former TV anchor and communications consultant now. And it's great to be with you all here today. So imagine that you have been a nest central worker for the past year. You have been on the front lines, working in some pretty dicey situations and doing it every day. Day in and day out without asking a question. And then imagine that all of a sudden you are looking to get a vaccine or beat registered to vaccines. And the governor says You're not part of phase one b Your phase one. See you're not essential anymore. This is what is befalling I b W local 1 34, and we're joined right now. By Don Finn, Who's the business manager? They're done. Thanks for joining us today. Thanks for having me Rob. And don. I want to give it ready. Full disclosure. I am my consulting work. I am helping the PR firm you have you have hired Harbinger group. Eileen Rockford get media coverage of this, So I've called some of my TV contacts and my newspaper contacts. To let them know this story is is out there and I just saw you and on Channel seven just to maybe half an hour ago, so I just want to give everybody full disclosure. But when I pitched it here, we said, Listen, This is an important story to tell. And that's how I am aware of what's going on. Because I've been assisting in that way. So don't give people an idea of what your local electrician's have been doing in the last year. And the challenge that they have faced being on the front lines. Absolutely, um, so let's take it back to march of 2020 when uh Governor Pritzker deemed all construction essential in the state of Illinois, I remembers have been out on the front lines day in and day out. As you mentioned doing the job, and actually, you know, working on the hospital's working on the on the, uh in the railways working in the airports, working the water reclamation for water supply. And also, let's not forget we're keeping the construction of the new temporary hospitals in the actual hospitals being built right now we've been to work every day. We haven't missed a day. And that's what we're doing across Cook County, the state of Illinois and city struggle, So tell me, so you're you're assuming because you've been deemed essential for a year and you've been doing your you all been doing your jobs day in and day out that when it came time to get in line for the vaccine, as it were that you would be part of phase one B, but that's not the case at all. You are listed as part of Phase one seat. That is correct Crap. You know, I kind of found it. I didn't. I thought it was maybe a mistake. But then, as we started looking into it, I obviously got on the phone right away and contacted the governor's office. And we've had multiple meetings with the governor's people and as leaders of yesterday and as you saw the governor deemed 2.5 million people who have preexisting conditions, and I applaud that move. I think it should have been done immediately, but great. It's been done. In that being said. We still haven't been included in that one. Save one be face, and now we're talking. April may be that we might be able to be included in the one see if it's even possible. I just don't see that it's right. And he gets in. Just And again. We've been out on the street doing what we do every day across the city struggle in Cook County, But I think in all fairness to the governor's office, they're saying, Listen, we're just following CDC guidelines. This a sip. Which says that That construction workers should be part of one C and not one b. What do you say to that? And I'm sure you've had that conversation time and again with the governor's office when they tell you that Listen, we're just following the CDC guidelines. What do you say? Well, there's a few things I could take it and I have said to the governor staff. First of all, the governor has the right to put different groups into one B, which he already has done you've seen which really baffles my mind. In about two weeks ago, every politician in the state of Illinois was afforded. The chance to get the vaccine. Now The politicians have been down this refilled. We all know that there hasn't been sessions when they do. They're down there for Dana out of there. We've been to work every day. How did they get to the front of line before us and again? Anyone who was deemed to the central worker that bus and they should have been afforded the right but where essential workers and we should have been afforded the right also. So people are going to say, Yeah, these air electrician's and they're doing important work and that sort of thing, But they're not. They're not a health care provider. They're not dealing directly with somebody who may have Cove it. What do you say to that? So that actually, that's a completely false statement. Because here's the deal, you're going to any hospital across the state of Illinois. His electrician's that are working in him operate. It was keeping the power of moving, given the generators moving we're doing with Hobart people day in and day out on our job sites. And it could be a hospital. But it's also it could be a simple is a build out for a pharmaceutical place were in there working and we're working in close proximity to each other. You know, we can't social distance in our jobs. Just can't be done in the building Trades were working with 6 10 15 man crews, and we're working on top of each other to get these places up and running. So while you say the governor says, Well, we're not in one B per se because the CDC said that the governor that's a recommendation that CD CD s The governor makes the final call on this as a front line worker as a group that has front line workers. Essential workers. What have you seen in the way of infection and then in the way of death for your members? You know, To be honest, I have the greatest job in the VW is representing. I beat everyone 34 to see what we've been through and what our membership has been through. He's actually sickening. We've had literally thousands of cases and we have had deaths within the local doing HIPPA rules. I won't tell you the number of dust, but we've had deaths that have actually caused from the from the virus. And it's just been. It's that she's been hurt breaking thing to see when you have to go to the family and tell them that their mom or their dad is not coming home tonight. It won't be ever home again because they felt the cold. It It's just all so I'm asking for around to be very clear on this is a chance to have our membership vaccinated. I understand they're short on vaccines. I understand it's been a horrible rollout. Please just give us the chance to actually sign up to get the shot. That's what we're looking for her. I don't think it's much too asked. What's your concern, though, if their members don't get this, and they do have to wait till April or may, and they're continuing to do their jobs. On a daily basis. What's your concern for your members? The number one concern be more sickness and more deaths. And that's not acceptable when we have the chance the chance in the opportunity to be put into one being it's just it's not like You worry about the risk that may occur to not only the people that are doing the work, but two people that are around them. Absolutely. I mean, remember, go to work on public transportation. They go home to their families. Some of them are caring for the elderly parents some of our parents for new boards, and now that you know, in part of the argument yesterday, I shouldn't say argument conversation was, they said, Well, if you have pre existing conditions, some of your members can get the vaccination. Why tell the members that don't you don't qualify, But yet you've been on jobs every day since day one. It's just not right and again. We're not asking for 10 million people to be included in this across the state word 180,000 building trades. People are locals 4500 people. I don't think that we're asking for anything that we shouldn't be afforded. Don Finn. I b w local 1 34 business manager. Thank you for taking the time today and joining us on the big 89. Well, thank you very much, All right. That's Don Finn with local 1 34 talking about why he believes his workers who have been deemed essential since day one of the pandemic..
