"Nine and from public radio international better known as PRI. I'm Tom Howard lane Asli. My knee is an author that you may have heard on the show before Leyla is a French author her book the perfect nanny was a huge success. It won the biggest book prize in France that pre gun cooler all of a sudden Leila's book landed on reading lists all over the world. So her book about murderous babysitters was such a hit that English publishers went back into us archives. And they've just published an English translation of her very first book Adele about a journalist who's addicted to sex. She seeks out all these risky affairs. But you can't seem to ever satisfy her needs. It's a theme that runs through Laos work that feeling of the bottomless void. She started writing the book while she was home nursing a new child during that time lately. My knee was watching the news all the time and she was thinking about sex. And self control. And this was the story dominating headlines. Dominique Strauss Kahn has run the International Monetary Fund, which is grappling with Europe's debt crisis. Now, the sixty two year old French politician has a crisis of his own accused of attempted rape inside an upscale Manhattan hotel. That's one of the news clips that came out a few years ago when Dominique Strauss Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund was accused of sexual assault and attempted rape. He denied it that particular case was settled, but I'm bringing it up for a reason. Because what does this book Adele have to do with Dominique Strauss Kahn? Actually, a third. The Knicks was can affair a lot of newspaper in France wrote articles about what they call sex addiction saying that Dominic's will scandal was a sex addict that he was suffering of sort of the disease, Bethel Aji, and I got very interested in debt. So I interviewed some psychiatry to read many books about the sex addiction. And that's how I had the idea that Adele was a sex addict this character of Dell I want to be clear here that she's not forcing herself on anyone. I mean, none of this is necessarily on consensual, but she is destructive self destructive at that. How do you prepare to write from that perspective? You know, I was very interested in exploring the McCain ISM of addiction. And I think that a for another list. It's fascinating to explore that to explore. What a psychiatrist told me to lose the freedom to say, no, I think that it's exactly the finishing of addiction to lose the freedom to say, no. So I wanted to describe this woman who is unable to resist to any temptation, but at the same time, she's not taking any pleasure blue when she's having sex with all those men she's trying to find something in to fill the void. But she never she's never successful. At that. Is that challenging for you to write about sex in a way that is is is destructive like that is not enjoyable in. I have to say when you read it. It's not it's not titillating. It's exciting. Yeah. It's very difficult because you know, when you begin to write a sex in you have to chose to use the vocabulary of poor pornographic vocabulary or to use a glamorous, and it will take cavalry. And I didn't want to use either of each and needed to use it very clinical very descriptive vocabulary. And it's was very difficult to write to sex scene in very cold way with some distance. Actually, it was very interesting. And I learned a lot of writing that, you know, the thing about Adele is that she seems to have this ideal life, you know, she has this beautiful family. She has a lot of financial security, and I couldn't help thinking you may have been trying to say something about someone who has so much, but you can still feel so empty, of course, I think that's, you know, I'm always laughing when people say that she has it all or he has it all because I think that it doesn't mean nothing. What does it mean? Mean to have it all, and it's not because you have it all that you are happy, and especially, you know, for for women because there is a lot of pressure on Limine society tells us, okay, you will marry you will have children you will have a job, and then you will be happy, and you will satisfy with what you have. You're not supposed to want more than that. And I was trying to ask this question. Is it possible for women to wall two more characters like Madame blueberry or an Kevin Nina, those those they want more than a husband and a child and are punished for that. So I wanted to ask this question is it still possible today is it possible to want more and not be punished for that? If you're just tuning in. My name is Tom power. My guest today is the French author. Leila's Limone, she's the author of a book you've probably seen on the subway. Maybe in your book club list, the perfect nanny was everywhere when it came out in English last year. Now her story about Adele, a journalist addict. To sex has also been published in English and just on what you were saying there. I mean, I see certain theme running through your stories whether it's a Dell or the women in the perfect nanny. Oftentimes, these are women who feel they need to escape part of their lives. Why do you think you keep coming back to characters who seem existential sort of board? Probably because as as a woman, I was very afraid of being imprisoned by domesticity being imprisoned, by the fact of being a wife for being a mother at the same time wants to be a good mother and juvie with someone I love and to have a home that would be a shelter, but I'm conscious. Also of the fact that domesticity can be a prison for women and very often you want to escape when you are mother. You don't have the right to say that sometimes you would like maybe for an hour or a day not to be a mother anymore. And to forget about that to be the woman you were before I think it's taboo to say that. But yeah, I wanted to express this feeling of being imprisoned that you experience a lot when you are a woman. Do you think? Do you think it's possible to feel satisfied? Do you feel that that goal satisfaction is attainable for the for the average human being? Yes. I think so I think that. You know, it's a question of personality. I don't have the personality. That's makes it possible for me to feel satisfied. But I think that people can be satisfied and sometimes with not so much and it's a approve of wisdom, and maybe I'm not wise enough to to be satisfied. So again, the the folks in your book do such incredible in your books to such incredible extreme things, but I couldn't help it you notice like I said, I don't have the personality that allows myself to be satisfied like are you expressing some some restlessness or some searching of yourself in these books. You know in all your books, you you try to express something about yourself. That's exactly what you know. I I love lebaron. I love movies on when you read their theory about literature. That's exactly what the try to to express. The fact that we all our characters are at that of us. This is impossible actually to describe human being without using something of yourself because all we know and about feelings about emotions about flesh and says is very personal. So you use all those personal things to distract characters. So of course, there is something of me in all my work. But I guess the question is is that is that something, you know, before you write it like is it is it that you experience these things. So they make it into the words that you, right? Or is it that you write these words, and then you read back and you go. Oh, well, I guess I'd bet I'm talking about myself there. I know that's a very good question, actually, and yeah, I think that's it's the writing. Maybe that makes you discover as those things about yourself and those things about your Ghardaia. I believe like my colleague, Joe has that it's the writing that writes, actually, it's I it's words, it's literature. So yeah, there is something magical, the more you right, and the more you discover things about yourself and about the the personality you're trying to explore into describe earlier. I we were joking around about Vanity Fair. And and and you being named one of France's most influential people of above French president Emmanuel Macron since we last talked obviously a lot has happened in your country. And I I you've talked a lot about that. But I also know that he gave you a very interesting job or he asked you to do very interesting job in his government. You know, what exactly does a francophone affairs minister do in France? Actually, I'm an ambassador, so I represent FRANZ inside the international organization for fun Kuni. So this is an organization with eighty four countries. And we try all of us all. The ambassadors to build programs educated educational programs could programs a lot of programs also for young girls to fight for the rights of minorities in our countries, and of course, to promote French language and to promote culture in general. What was your reaction when you were approached to do this? I mean, this is not something I normally see from authors from from some folks in the arts in France, it's pretty common. I must say that there. There has always been a link between people from the government and writer, they call us. They ask us for advice and the president Michael he's he loves to read then he loves literature and his wife is used to be a professor, so yes, I think that he was very interested in my work. I we spoke of literature for long time. And then one day he called me. And he said, okay, you I know that you're from Morocco at that. It's very important for you. That's in your first country. Moral people continue to speak French. Because I've always said that I think that it's a chance to speak many languages would you like to to promote French-Language all over the world. And of course, I said yes to tell me more about that. I mean, there's there's been no shortage of coverage that your family is from Morocco in a place that was colonized by France. Like, tell me more was that was that on your mind when you were looking into accepting this job. Yes. Of course, because it's a thought of me, but you know, it's always fairly from you. When people speak about declinism version of a Franzen in Morocco, very often. They have the feeling that it's the whole history of Morrocco is resumed and reduced to this station. But it was like fifty years of mutation in the country that has an extraordinary and very complex history. And a very very old monarchy. Sue, yes, we are. We have a history that is much more interesting and much more complex than this station. And also, my parents were Clinton is migrant burns to they suffered at that too. I knew all of this suffering because of globalization, but I think it's the past. And I think that we earn something from that. It's this language and French language is mine. And I think that French-Language doesn't belong to France anymore. It's not I mean finished language. Not French French language is more akin. Senegalese chairman, Tunisia Asian, and of course can injured. Yeah. I think it's very important to say that now we we speak French because we love this language and not only because we are victim more dominated before we go into the last time. We were speaking. We were speaking about the perfect, Danny? And as we talked about it. It's it's it can be a very dark read. Did you feel the urge to write something happier about puppies or clouds or chocolate bars after this? I would love to have the talent to to write something about chocolate bars. But I don't have this kind of talent. So I would stick with grandma doc thinks happiness is not very interesting in in rich richer. It's not that easy to write a novel about happiness. But maybe next time we speak you'll you'll be you'll be saying, no. Know, I'm gonna talk to you about bumblebees. That's all it's going to be. Why not why not thank you for talking to me again? Thank you. Thank you very much lately. My knee is bestselling author from France her first novel has just been released an English here in North America..

"Paul. She is a congresswoman out of Washington. And she doesn't seem nearly as shall we say, she's not really compromising sort of mood. This is never been about a wall. He actually could have gotten funding a couple of years ago or a year ago for a wall. It was part of a deal that was proposed not all of us agreed with that deal. But it was. Opposed to him, and he turned it down. Because his alternate goal is as you said to make America pure in the sense of not having immigrants not having folks of color here and shutting down every form of legal immigration. Holy mackerel. That seems that seems a little mean spirited back to congresswoman hill. So yes, or no on a steel barrier or a concrete barrier. I will definitely I don't know if it's steal. I will vote for some money for physical barriers. Okay. Not going to be. It's not going to be across the entire two thousand mile stretch. And it's certainly not going to be a concrete wall. But it will be part of a package. I can almost bet on it. Okay. And the congresswoman from Washington any thoughts on that. He's alternate goal is as you said to make America pure in the sense of not having immigrants not having folks of color here and shutting down every form of legal immigration that does seem quite harsh Jonathan on. How is this a shutdown affecting our over? Paul national economy is it at all. It is John great view this afternoon. It really is starting to add up. In fact, Wells Fargo was out with a status morning. These said that you've got eight hundred thousand federal employees who are not working conceived delays and tax refunds the economic effect. They tabulate at about two billion dollars a week. But that's going to be made whole wants. This thing is settled in win. John is you know, we're already under the twenty-first day. Let's be honest. They cannot some vendors aren't going to get paid yet. But but the eight hundred thousand or missing a check today, let's be honest once congress gets together and president signs whatever he's going to sign and all this sausage making has done. We're going to give them the money. So we're not losing that money. Well, analysts are estimating John. And in fact, this is affecting the economy SMP global also at this morning. They said that in effect in two weeks the cost to the economy, and they do see a cost and economic cost is the result of the shutdown is in two weeks. The cost of the economy is going to be six billion dollars. Ironically, that is more than the cost. The president's proposed wall. Compounding effect here people late with their tax refunds inability to get mortgages and so on. So there is a cost to the economy. However slighted might seem at this point. I don't mean to belittle people that aren't getting their paychecks of a boy, there'd be held a pay in this country. If the IRS didn't send out response, pitchforks and torches come out and people are marching into the streets. When it really staying, then people are interested. Yeah. And that's a real reality. John that in fact delays on rebates delays on refunds as you said. And even if you're getting a loan that's been a real delay that people are worried about now in dealing with right now, for example, oftentimes you need to get a mortgage you have to get federal income tax transcripts those are delayed right now. So this is affecting even if you work for the government or have a relative who works for the government. This is impacting business. It is impacting the economy, and this is now the longest shutdown in American history. You so definitely hurting the bottom line. I go I go through all these news channels all the cable news, and I sit there and MSNBC and all. It's all about the kids and the single mothers who worked for the federal government who are now going to have to go to carmax tomorrow to turn in their car to pay for the next of groceries. Then you go to FOX, and it's hysteria that if we don't ask your two thousand miles with a twenty five foot wall, we're all going to be just overrun imminently. And gosh is Armageddon. And you get the sense for being sucked into a false narrative by two sides of the same coin. I mean, honestly, here's a here's some positive news. You know? And I always say look follow the money watch the stock market. And in fact, it's UpJohn since the shutdown began it's up about ten percents of the stock market is I believe hopefully, giving us some reasons for hope it is off to its best start in thirteen years in the market tends to follow. What's called this five day rule? If the first five days of the year are good. In fact, the market has about an eighty percent chance of being up for the year. So look, the shutdown is a political mess, but hopefully, the market is forecasting us, a brighter twenty nine thousand nine hundred twenty I hope I hope so too. I mean, I love for the. The economy to keep roaring on. I think that the like these sugar high that we received when I got this great tax cut and the corporations to that that seems to be burning off a little bit. And now, the fed is getting nervous and raising rates. So I don't know what twenty nineteen is going to hold the one thing that we know it's gonna hold Jonah's higher prices. In fact, kinda interesting study at this afternoon that when was the last time we had inflation serious. Well, you remember Carter? I remember the misery index. Yeah. That was horrible. Yeah. I mean, you really most people adults today barely were alive that you were. But you know, what I'm saying most young people certainly weren't alive during the biggest the biggest inflation as you pointed out, by the way, I I'm in my late. At point is is that we're seeing prices start to rise. A Bloomberg was out with a fascinating story restaurant prices. John rising at their fastest rate in seven commodities. Opposite commodities prices also labor costs are going up. But we also saw for example, twenty eighteen a washing machine. Prices John their biggest leap ever that was as a result of the tariffs steal it. All works out of the bottom line. Your dollar is buying less and less than twenty nine thousand nine. It's going to be a factor. My Twitter feed is saying that vodka is going to head the World Bank. That is have you heard that that that is a story out of the F T this morning that in fact, as you said the president's daughter, Ivanka Trump under consideration to lead the World Bank. Outgoing President Kim it's that Kim Jong UN. It's Jim Yong Kim. This is a different organization, and Dominique Strauss Kahn that was the International Monetary different organization.
