"An arm. they're getting free season tickets only money. they're getting from them as concessions and sometimes not even that you know if they don't wanna eat all part because the good see episode whatever it was we talked about. it's brown i'm go yeah But no. I think i'm just talking pure entertainment pure engagement Not even the economy of it but just just the fact that there are people butts in seats right. That's gonna be an interesting thing to see and but again if you think about it that the host family thing wasn't it kind of only at rookie ball and low a affiliate levels Probably in those don't even exist anymore like the arizona. Summer league in the dominican summer league and pioneer pioneer leagues. Got the other gone now right. So they're not affiliated. That is what i'm saying like. Yeah yeah yeah. As far as affiliated goes i mean the cost is it's more cost effective now than it was three years ago for sure. Yeah right so. It makes more sense routines to like the fit that bill. And i think that's part of i mean we've talked about this before that's part of the reason they did. That was because they saw things like this coming where they're going to have to pay for housing. They're gonna have to pay their players more. They're going to have to take care of them more so like well. We can't do that for five. Minor league teams get cut. Cut the fat here. So i think that i think that goes a long way a long way for it. I think you're right and like we talked about with the pioneers guys. This great opportunity for them to shake it up and make it their own. And i think everybody's winning right now. This is what i'm in. Yeah and it's pretty pretty stinking cool so the next story that we have is probably the coolest thing that you didn't hear about honestly i would agree with that. Yeah because this came as somewhat of a shock to both brad. And i and we were like whoa. Whoa and it's a huge deal but if you know you don't know so we're gonna tell you major league. Baseball is in talks right now setting up. That's what we do. We tell you where the talks to set up a streaming four major league baseball games that will not have blackout restrictions. Yeah that's a big deal inc and don't get in a wreck on your commute okay To to handle that wheel now is that is that is shocking because So when we lived in idaho. I did not get to watch any mariners games at all. I was starting to actually become a little bit of a dodgers fan. Because those are the games i got to watch at night. You know because of timing. And everything like that. Like i didn't get to watch mariners games so i would turn on a dodger game and you know it helps that my brother in law with us and is dodger fan so we turn on the dodgers but anyway now though i mean now i live in phoenix. I don't get to watch diamondbacks games..

"Time to go down on the farm and of farm report brought to his spy Colorado Farm Bureau insurance mentioned yesterday in our farm report that The low way West Fresno Grizzlies In the high A West spoken Indians are both playing in their championship series for their respective leagues next week. There is a lot of talent at the lower levels for the Rockies. The Team in Scottsdale. They call it the Arizona complex League. It is taken over for what used to be the rookie leagues. They don't have any post season. There are 15 teams playing down there. And the team representing the Iraqis has clinched the best record in the A Z. A C L If you will 43 16 is the record for the team in Scottsdale. And the Rockies also have two teams playing in the Dominican Summer League. They're in different divisions. And they have the best records in each of their divisions. So it'll take a little while and not all of them are going to make it obviously, but the Rockies are certainly replenishing the talent pool at the lower levels going to be fun to watch those guys. Move through the ranks, trying to reach their.

"Let's dive into the minor leagues Is it hard for you to believe with everything that the minor leagues went through a year ago and not playing and now Getting through a full season even though it was pushed back that it's almost done. The minor league season is almost done. That's hard to believe for me. That's right and the the minor leagues are in their final week. With the exception of a couple of exceptions where is the dominican summer league which started much later. It's gonna play into october. And those are the young man who play on the backfield in the various academies in the dominican republic the cardinals have two teams there the other team that will continue to play as memphis aaa now. Their regular season will end on. Sunday is coming. Sunday's it's like all the other leagues but they added a two weeks onto the end of the aaa schedule where the teams will play a postseason tournament. Basically where they'll play five games a week. Ten games total in the team that you know have the best record. We'll we'll get crowned the champion because there won't be any real playoffs and there's a couple of reasons for that one. The main reason is i think that they're keeping aaa going is that that provides a ready source of reserves for the major leagues because this year their own they were only allowed to two more players for the final months of saint. Louis went from twenty six to twenty eight players but if they had a rash of injuries here you know the rest of the way. You don't want all your triple eight players sent home for the winter so by keeping them playing you know you can call up guys from memphis bring them up and down as needed. The other thing is there guys rehabbing. So let's say dakota hudson isn't quite ready to rejoin saint louis. And he needs to pitch next week. Well the only place he's available to pitch could pitch would be for aaa minutes. So you know that gives organizations a little more flexibility as they're trying to complete this regular season with a with a strong and full bench about dakota hudson What kind of role do you think he could play for the cardinals here and the the final couple of weeks. Why a little surprised. He hasn't been called up yet then. and the answer seems to be that they want him to be able to pick multiple innings Because he certainly shown in short bursts. And i think he's up to two dollars an hour and he shorted shown in short bursts that he can be effective right now. Major league i think he was. You know he looked much better. For example we had. The michael did So so i guess there's just one i'm not sure exactly what the last piece they wanna see. Maybe it's getting it's pitch count up to fifty or sixty or you know whatever the target is but you know. I have a feeling that. We're going to see dakota hudson which saint louis pretty soon in terms of ranking the prospects Ah summer now. Basically in the books you kinda re ranked the cardinal prospects in and redone that with the cardinal nation dot com. What do you have try again Every month and sometimes i'm better at it than others but the goal is every month to re ranking of the top fifty prospects..

"After this year but as a number four or five starter. He's been very good. He's been absolutely solid right. Pittsburgh's one of the worst teams in baseball but anderson's five and eight with a four three five era. He's got eighty six strikeouts. Only twenty five walks over. The course of eighteen starts in every one of his eighteen starts. He's gone at least five innings. So you're going to get some length out of the back end of the bullpen. Which is certainly exciting for teams number. Four and five starters at least here in philadelphia have certainly struggled to go deep into games. And you're the pirates you're continuing to add to your minor league prospects right. Been st- is twenty two years old these just outside of the top thirty list for the mariners according to major league baseball when it comes to prospects he was at double a arkansas. After starting the year at high a. everett. He hit two eighty four and high in forty games before he was promoted. He was also in his first big league spring training earlier this year so again a guy at aa behind the plates now they did just draft a catcher henry ford a number one overall at a louisville so ultimately looking for some depth that that position potentially a backup in the future moving forward and then you have yada whose only eighteen years old and he was pitching for the mariners dominican summer league before heading back to pittsburgh so you get yourself a lottery ticket in an arm and a catcher at the aa level. Who's already been promoted this year and you have to like the return for pittsburgh after shipping out which is a rental piece there anderson is. It'll be a free agent. After this year. So tyler anderson ultimately ends up in seattle after thinking he was just going to go across the turnpike across the state of pennsylvania instead he has shipped across the country all the way out there to the pacific northwest as seattle ends a back end of the rotation starter now the reds they continued over revamped their bullpen. They made another move on the twenty eighth this year. They acquired right handed pitcher michael givens for the rockies for right handed pitcher case williams and right handed pitcher no davis so the reds continued to fortify their bullpen. A day after trading for a couple of guys from the yankees givens thirty one years old has a two seven three era. He's got thirty four strikeouts and twenty nine and two thirds innings so far for the rockies which is very promising. If you're throwing out there in colorado. I mean given sees a guy who's pitched in a setup role. He was previously a closer during his time with the orioles. He's been successful in that role so he's been able to lock down games. He's thrown in big time situations previously in his career. So they just in cincinnati they feel. He's a really good upgrade out there. I mean at twenty seven point. Four percent strikeout rate which translate to a one seven one are plus and with era plus one hundred his being major league average so very above major league average. And gosh she is man. It's a good move for cleveland for cincinnati. Absolutely he's owed roughly one point four million dollars across the rest of the season. He will be a free agent after this year so unlike the pieces that they added from new york he will only be here unless he signs a new deal in cincinnati for the next couple of months The reds were seven games out in the central six games out in the wildcard spot and basically with the brand new. They certainly feel like they got a heck of a lot better here over the past couple of days. So who did colorado get back in this deal again case. Williams and noah davis nineteen year old. Right hander case williams. He was ranked as the reds number twenty overall prospect and twenty four year. Old right hander. Noah davis was ranked the twenty sixth overall prospect for the cincinnati reds so the reds did have to give up some of their prospects in order to add to their bullpen. But they definitely feel good about what they have going on there in. Cincinnati now so from colorado's perspective. You have a guy who's most likely going to leave in free agency anyway. I like this deal from their side of things to get a couple of arms who were rated as relatively high prospects within the reds organization. So a nice deal for both teams here. I think both teams are getting better. And it's a good trade on both sides as we're coming to the deadline here now. The last rate will discuss here in segment number to the houston astros. Were once again busy. The astros acquired right handed pitcher yima garcia from the marlins who is the closer from the marlins so again back into the bullpen as houston is certainly addressing. Here he's got fifteen saves for the marlins three point four seventy. Ra in thirty nine relief appearances far this year. So garcia has been very good for this miami team and houston. I just booked goodness gracious now that they got three guys at the back end of the bullpen. Who have all closed games. Have all been very good this year. What was a weakness as recently as forty eight. Seventy two hours ago certainly looks like a strength now. I mean garcia. He's got a ninety six mile. An hour fastball throws a hard slider along with the curve and a changeup he can overpower hitters. The houston said they identified him early in the process and have been going at him. Pretty hard here recently. So houston looking at the standings in the american league. They are tied for the best record in the american league entering thursday and again the one weakness that They really had on. Paper has been updated and has been improved to now potentially being a strength with three arms on the back end grave men presley and garcia. You can count on have thrown in high leverage situations. You could probably interchange them. Some guy i would assume presley stays in the closer role and you now have your seventh and eighth inning guys. But if for some reason presley can't go he's gonna be out on paternity leave here soon Potentially throws a few days in a row. You got some guys with closing experience who can step up and get the job done now. Going back to. Miami is right handed pitcher austin pruitt and outfielder brian daily cruise so pruitt earlier was designated for assignment to make room for raphael montero who was recently acquired via trade and he has now since been traded to the marlins so he is on the move to miami and then you have daily cruise the twenty four year old minor league outfielder sitting three twenty four with twelve home runs in an eight zero open at sixty six games at the aaa level. So far this year so again. The marlins they're getting back big league level talents. You got a guy a triple a hidden three twenty four with twelve home runs..

"And if you can sign players. One clare a under their slot amount. That means there's more money potentially available to to sign player be and joshua by has got over nine hundred thousand dollars over slot bonus two and a quarter million total to sign and that young man is a very gribben from his media comments and wants to become the best he can be even throughout the name. Mike trout is the target that he's trying to achieve it. Looks like a kid that wasn't shy on confidence. Let's put it that way that's right and there's nothing wrong with that but You know obviously he's got a got a lot to prove in if he's like every other player in the history of baseball he's going to have his downs as well as his ups. And so you know the the challenge will be for the cardinals to assess the readiness of each of these players. Get them into jupiter and and see where they stand because most emit played a full spring season and so they're they will necessarily jump into full action right away in fact. None of the draft picks have have suited up in game activity yet. So you know interesting to watch to see. How much work. The cardinals give these. These young men informal games this season. The dominican summer league is underway. Isn't it that's why this this year. The dominican summer league and that's of course the entry level for the cardinals system for all their international players that typically starts right around memorial day this year it was delayed until mid-july the cardinals have two teams down there and It's very upsetting their separate divisions so. They don't play each other except once a week on saturdays. The to cardinals teams face off But the ideas. There's about thirty five players on each roster and these are typically sixteen seventeen. Eighteen year olds and of course. They're trying to narrow the pyramid on to find the handful. Who would potentially be ready to come to the us next year The the dominican academy had been closed Really from when shortly after the pandemic broke out until may so these players the cardinals assigned. I dunno over thirty thirty or forty players in twenty twenty and twenty twenty one and so all these players are now just getting their first professional action an action so a majority of the players In the dominican summer league on the two cardinals teams are really just getting started in their career. So they'll be a lot of good development work going on over the dominican this summer and we continue to see the development of nolan gorman so he hits a couple of home runs here recently. He's now at Aaa and is he primarily..

"And so you know. They've just got to be careful with liberty for to make sure that they don't hurt his development in the in the importance of trying to help. Saint louis this season now. I i will say ron donors down there. That we've seen eligible down there right now and is closing and As is jank woodford rather than those three. There are no pitchers in memphis. Who have who are on the forty man roster and frankly who are you know showing that they're that they're ready to come up saint louis and help nolan. Gorman gets promoted so he's one step away from the big leagues. yeah i was. I guess pleasantly surprised to see nolan gorman promoted and there were a series of of third base promotions that occurred in tandem that will talk about but the garments are our number one prospect and his age eight sixty two and he got almost two hundred plate. Appearances a double a. He brought a strikeout rate down in his walk. Rate was was over nine percent which which is good because of course the eleven home runs in the fact that he's playing second base as well as third or what you know are tending to draw out of attention rightfully so But you know it's a different situation from dealing carlson two years ago where. The cardinals kept carlson in In aa basically five months before they brought him up to triple eight for the final month. So you could say nola. Gorman is a faster trajectory in that part of his career then was dylan carlson. And so you say okay. We've got allah july august september for knowingly gorman to continue to grow. I mean there's no guarantee that he's going to you know take off in aaa right away. He has enough time there to get feed on the ground and realistically come to camp next spring with carpenter likely gone to compete for a job. on the saint louis infield in terms of the The movement with the minor leagues. Some pretty big promotions is past. Week weren't there. Yeah yeah that. I alluded at a minute ago. Let's just go through them. So the cardinals have three very good third base prospects all in the top twelve or so in the system we of course talked about gorman number one and we have malcolm nunez who was international signee and in his first year in In two thousand eighteen won the batting One of the triple crown the dominican summer league And he moved up then from pin peoria to double a springfield to basically backfill. Gorman and nunez Slashed over eight hundred at peoria and as a very pretty good strikeout rate about eighteen little under eighteen percent and still drew drew walks reasonable rates. So it you know malcolm newness showed that. He was ready to take that next step and that was. That's really good for him. Because nunez ended up back in johnson city in two thousand nineteen. And so you know. The cardinals took a little bit of a risk putting him in hiatus start the year but he showed that he can handle it which is which is great and then the third move maybe the most exciting move maybe more exciting than gorman is jordan walker. Who of course was the first round out of a georgia last year. As a high schooler. he he missed. I don't know maybe three weeks or so with palm beach but still a hit..

Um, he, uh he's a guy that slots right, familiar bullpen and has said success over the last couple of years and Quality guy, and I think we were just, uh We ended up getting a guy on waivers that we really like that we think can help this pulpit in the long run. I know. Earlier this week, you also went to the red developmental complex in the Dominican Republic. Which you know, we has fans don't get to see. But can you just give us a little overview of the facility down there? And what would your trip and tail Yeah, so I went down. Got to see to see a little bit of our mini camp got to got to see all the coaches and scouts go to a tryout. Which was great, You know, just just it's great to go down there. Try to go down twice a year. On bit's a really important part of what we do, and I think sometimes it's it's out of sight out of mind. You know, I think that for us being good in international scallion development It is going to be a key for us long term, and I think that's something that you know we strive for, and it's great to see you go down there and see the coaches in the scouts working together, you know, just with Roster standpoint, getting ready for the Dominican Summer League, Andre You know, going from there, so it's It's been really good to see that group of guys want Peralta, the director of the academy, Joel Noboa, trade, Hendricks are our international scouting director. You know, Greg, you're going these guys. They've done a tremendous job and it's It's been a lot of fun to watch. Watch that program progressive and see guys get into our system and you know, with A lot of tools and some upside now they're gonna be far away. But at the same time, it's been great to see those those lower levels get stocked with talent. I know it's important to you guys took pour some resource is in there and let's face it. The Dominican Republic has been so rich in baseball talent that that is just somewhere. You have to have a presence, do you not? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, we have to be good there. You know, we can't just be adequate from a from a standpoint of drafting and signing international players, amateur draft, obviously player development. We We've got to be good, and that's where that's what we're striving for. It's It's uh, you know you're seeing it in our lower levels of the minor leagues where we've got some talent coming and you know, really excited about about some of these players that have a chance to Be impact Big leaguers in the in the future, Nick, as always appreciate your time. Welcome back to trustee ranch complete played element Whitney Trotsky Trent on Jero Welcome. Back to Trotsky ranch complete player development body tools make up. We have our guests from the Kansas. City. Royals player development DSL Dominican. Summer League Jeff. Diskin Jeff. Honor to have you on the show we another segment here with you. So let's keep moving I wanNA talk a little bit specifically about actual player development. I think that people understand now kind of a little bit about the DSL the timeframe the ages knew what it looks like. If you could talk a little bit about because when we think of. The twenty seven percent will the majority of those players in the big leagues that twenty seven percent of the foreign born players come from the Dominican Republic. What are they doing that you've noticed? How many years have you been in the Dominican? I've been going there since two thousand, eight up in worked with the rose to other since two thousand, thirteen case you have a good history that I've been down there for almost twenty years. And their style of training has definitely influenced me as a coach I mean tremendously and. When you look in the big leagues, some of the best young players, some of the best overall players are Dominican hitters. They're also when you think of Armstrong and you think of pitchers, you think velocity you think of healthy arms you think of durable arms you think of arms with velocity you think of Latin America, you think of Dominican players and yes in in America. We have. You know we have some great pictures too but it's it's like a it's like a system like what have you noticed that they do because we talked already about throwing and my strengthen Dominican Republicans throwing year round they play catch your around. They're not necessarily competing year round, and that's one of the problems here in the US they're competing we have tournaments January. February march April goes all through the summer to the fall to the winter bagging new the spring I mean it's nonstop. So if you can elaborate a little bit on your opinion even from maybe the royal standpoint and also your experiences a coach from the throwing tool right now. This clarify one thing real quick, nate. About Twenty, eight percent of major league players are are international. But the fifteen percent are Dominican. Right fifteen or twenty eight, Dominican. So it's actually the grown up playing baseball this in it's changing a little bit now. But for the most part they just play. They play baseball they truly play baseball and an AIDS playing catch. It's and it's a really as a trainer they're focused on the five tools. There's a huge tremendous emphasis. On. The fire tools because that is. As. People know or don't know but the the. Gone over our trainer when he trains a player. They train them for free investing investing their time and their resources in despair with the hopes that he will sign. And once he signs, then we'll get a percentage of what he's science for for the United. States we all of our money up front. We paid for the lessons to travel Bob front that we signed or go to college at all hours. America, can't afford to do that. So it's kind of flipped. The. Invest in the players. Player signs that they give him. They give him a percentage of the side for Sorority get signed. The trainers are the discounts they have to develop the tools. Of of the players. and. One thing about the players is your best athletes and then make Republicans are playing baseball which I we got some of our best athletes are baseball here but not all our best athletes prime baseball here. So they're all their best athletes are playing baseball there, and they just work on the tools disrupt. Rep Rep Rep. Rep. And they played Tetris softballs, they hit Hit heavy balls or softballs as well. Anything do they don't have jams? The anything that creates a resistance training is out of the work that they do. So that functional strength Israel because when you think about a lot of American athletes, they're big strong muscles in and you know I'm I'm an athlete that plays different sports. When I think of cross training, even think about even someone's shooting a bow and Arrow you know there was this national Artist I don't know if that's the exact word but she was on the national team and she was overweight she didn't have one muscle on her body and she could pull the Bobak at one hundred and twenty pounds which most grown men can't pull back over ninety pounds. Hundred pounds I mean she's pulling back to shoot the most own. Her Dad can't pull a backer in her two brothers camp pullback and she doesn't have any should any physical strength in the sense of going to the weight room in looking at the physical appearance. So when you think of development, we're talking functional strength, which is number. One and they're also climbing trees right there climbing trees they're working around that far they're working in the yard they're using their hands, their core they're developing. The small muscles are are are out beets are going to school, which is great but they're sitting at the computer sitting watching video games, playing video games, and they're out in the streets playing using your muscles and they have this durability and you don't necessarily when you look at these these Latin American players, you don't see this big physical stature like we'll see maybe in the states, it's long as lucid lane, but it's functional right in those arms have durability. If. Actual strength is spot on but I do it with with burying their has the sand and trying to extend their hands. They do rights, buckets, they create all this functional strength without having to go out and buy by thousand sets do with make do with with what they have. It's one.

"The only players that can be traded are the players who are actively on in sixty nine pool right now. So you couldn't trade a young guy in the Dominican Summer League or somebody who played in the New York piddly those guys are off the table to be created this year. Now, you could name a player to be named later, which requires teams to name that player within six months, but there's no games to evaluate these guys. So you're not gonNA, teams aren't GonNa know anymore about this unknown guy in six months now than they don't today. Brian. Walden of the Cardinal Nation is my guest I'm curious 'cause you you dive into the minor leagues. So two of the biggest names coming out of camp with the minor leagues outside Dylan Carlson were Matthew Liberatore Nolan Gorman at the alternate site if this was a quote unquote normal season, where would they have started and where do you think they would've finished? I think there's a third name you WANNA put in there along with Labor. Tories is Thompson absolutely left-hander the first rounder. Guys all our guys probably would have started this season at. Aa Springfield and you know. Easily one of them could ahead of Dylan. Carlson, like year where they drew a lot of attention you know potentially finish the year at Triple A. and you know in a in an environment where the cardinals needed help you know they could get called up and so you know as we've talked about in multiple calls like this, even for the guy to are lucky enough to be in the player pool and getting work this year, their development is slowed by what's happened around him because you know and constant told us and she said listen you know there's Just aren't enough players in the alternate camp that we can have real games. Yeah. We can put players on the field. We can take right bank recs we get are working, but the you know the implication was it's not the same as playing games against live competition. So you know the goodness, the cardinals have some very good prospects and they're not inconvenienced anymore than any other twenty nine organizations but you know what's happened this year has definitely her prospects across it. There's no question Dylan Carlson your impressions of what you've seen from the young man so far. You know I think the thing that impresses me most doing Carlson isn't something that a lot of other folks focus on you know folks are realizing swing. You know what I have been impressed with. His is his demeanor and he's always been a calm. He's always been a wealth you know. Well Focus Guy but you know he hasn't let the bad luck. You know the challenges that he had kept him. Seen Him. argue with on Pires and scoring away from the plate and throw it's bad or you know I'm not saying that you know that's common. But the point is you know he tell by looking at him did he did exist strike out with the bases loaded with getting back home? He's really an even keel guide that's going to be important here because. Let's face it. You know this is probably the first time in his career where he's seen a little adversity right? He seem breaking pitch if he's like he's never been pits before you seem quality of pitches that he's never seen before, and so now the challenge is going to be you know for him to learn from that and every indication is that he has both. The right mental outlook in the physical tools to enable them to do that. We were they primarily playing him it Springfield in Memphis was primarily in center. Am I right? He played a lot of corners..

"To work ethic to a numbers game at a position group, and sometimes they're off field issues that also get in the way, sometimes, not even the players fault, I think the most interesting to prospects that were let go are or when Peter. Nila, you've heard me talk about him. From time to time on the PODCAST WHO has experienced catching, but actually runs pretty well. At least you know in line could end up. Up In outfielder, first base tight, because he was playing a little bit of first base outfield in the Dominican Summer League, and there are a lot of advanced plate skills and physical tools here, but you know still project in an interesting bat based on tools and production, both but not surprised. He was among those Let go, and maybe there was something away from baseball. Maybe it was a depth thing. Maybe it was. A again. If you'RE GONNA make some cuts because you're making room for the new players that came in from last year's draft that didn't get activated and remember. Last year's draft was forty rounds. And, not all of them were activated in playing. Last year. Some of them will really get going this year. Joey O'Brien was a two way player in college but his injury certainly played a role here. He was another interesting talent that was amongst those cuts. Another of some note, Louis Villa's four hundred eighty five pound outfielder. Lots of physical tools there but lacked production in there may be a work at the gives you there I don't know but those three stuck out the most me, but again this happens every year. They're always a few interesting talents that get let go for one reason to the other. We don't know details on it. But. It's rarely a player Eli. WHOA really I. Mean like if they would have cut. I don't know cargo bins would have been lying. Why why would you do that? It doesn't make any sense So again interesting talents, a couple of them, sure generally nothing to to to worry about be concerned about, and some of them would have been released in March, and a few others in June or July to make room for this year's draft players that sign and get sent out in July so if you add all that up, it's usually thirtyish, in March, and you're gonNA. Do another ten to fifteen in May June July anyway to make room for some of the drafted players that ultimately getting sent out. This is pretty normal really. Really really close to it so there you go thanks Andrew. Be saved one of the things to note on this. Though the mirrors farm, the floor has been raised every step of the way under Jerry Dipoto despite the draft, being somewhat of a missed opportunity for Major League baseball as a whole, and certainly for the mirrors as a whole at least in my opinion i. don't think I'm alone there. considering their approach on day two. They certainly raise the floor again last week with six and five rounds. Certainly did that, so they basically just kind of lopped off the end. And that happens every year. thank you again. Andrew! Appreciate it. Dan VN's host of the Dan Cave podcast. By the way, which is a really fun listen ask seahawks forever on twitter Dan Asks Hey Jason with the selection of handcock now added to an impressive stable of starting pitchers in the Mirror System Gilbert. Kirby Campbell Williamson Thin Sheffield et Cetera in addition to UC Kukuchi Mark Open Zala, and now seems like Justin. Done is destined to be on the Edmund Yeahs plan. Do you now anticipating being moved to the bullpen as soon as twenty twenty one? while moving don is plausible certainly wouldn't expect it. In Twenty Twenty one unless we learn information that strongly suggest the timing of that like as we sit here right now. We haven't seen him pigeon twenty twenty. We haven't seen these guys pitch in two thousand twenty, and so we don't know whether there's development or lack of development and he really hasn't had the opportunity to do that, so we know he was going to get the chance to start in twenty twenty. Twenty if he doesn't the pitch or pitch much I'm not sure it makes a lot of sense to go ahead and change that projection certainly not at the start of twenty twenty one. We may get most of the way through a twenty twenty one season and he didn't show the progress. They wanted to see for the most part in the minors. And then we see that I guess that's possible But, he has the kind of lesson that suggests that changes he needs to make can be done pitch development delivery I'm imagining stays a starter until it's pretty clear. He's not going to help Seattle. They're soon enough. And? That's what they did with. Edmund es done is further along as a starter. He was a year ago at this point then. Edwin D as ever got. Has, a better flat fastball, slider, Combo and a better delivery. ultimately chances are done ends up. I average reliever and it. was but to not give him. A full shot would be a mistake in since Seattle isn't winning until at least twenty twenty two and now maybe we have to push that back a year because the twenty twenty season at least at this point is at least mostly a law season. They still have some time to figure that out. There's no rush. It's not like thin. And Williamson and and Campbell are going to be in the Big Leagues in Twenty Twenty. Twenty, twenty one, so they're not really rushed to do it and now Dan. You weren't discussing Sheffield here. Because some asked this question, there's a lot of talk about Sheffield's gotta go to the bullpen. I will include him in the rest of this conversation Justice Sheffield is a different story because he's passed all the minor league tests and we'll get a big league test. You know the next year plus before the club has considered change. He's just as athletic as done. Maybe more his lower half and has a third pitch. He just needs to command the fastball better and get to council where he can use his best pitch a slider, and ultimately the change up more in. It's always easier to say guys better in the bullpen, because for so that's true including established major league starters. Are you telling me that Masimba? bumgarner wouldn't be amazing in the bullpen. Those numbers would be unbelievable. He Be Andrew Miller. How good would Patrick Corbin being? The bullpen lots out and we saw some of that in October, but when the answer to the following question becomes clear the mariners. They'll make the move and that question is. Where is just an done most valuable for us? Not Better Most Valuable, and they won't ask themselves that question for at least a year. Maybe two on Sheffield and we're still probably talking. I don't know fifteen twenty starts minimum at the minor league level for Justin done. And maybe even starts at the big league level depending on those minor-league starts. Go I. think that's what we were going to see in twenty twenty in a regular year. You know the majority of the season in the minors done. If things look good enough, he'd get some time at the end of the year to make five to ten starts. But it's also worth noting here that that the same, that's true for done and to a lesser extent, Sheffield is also true for Sam Carlsen Brandon, Williamson and Isaiah Campbell. Good enough. Chance there relievers not bank on a starting role for them and start making decisions based on what you have coming with those players. Are believe the confidence. At least for me is significantly higher when we're talking about Logan Gilbert Emerson, Hancock and George, Kirby, the club's stopped three pitching prospects. Those are all starters who barring injury will start significantly in the majors with at least some regularity. Thanks Dan Balls. Well with you hope the job is going well. Our state in our county start reopening. businesses that are so important. All of us getting back to work Yeah, we could see justice done kind of pulling Ed Wendy as I. Don't think that decision needs to be made any time soon, but if I were wait, if are making a wager at this point, I would bet that ultimately up in the Pan I don't know if that comes before he makes significant. A significant number of starts in twenty twenty slash twenty, twenty, one as a starter for the mayor's. Because again. They have the time to do that. I, mean the earliest. They're going to actually claim that they have a chance is twenty twenty two and we're probably actually looking at twenty twenty three now. Unfortunately. are moving on here. Dj Van Court. Checks in with a question on the first round. Pick talk a lot about Hancock, but this is an interesting one hancock versus Felix as prospects floor ceiling. Can Hancock good as Felix was in his prime if his development goes as planned..

"How are you Tom? Great my my baseball. All teams manager didn't get fired before ever coaching game. So I'm in a pretty good spot right now boy boy oh boy this. Although the he can argue the phillies may have been better off. Had gave Gabe Kappler been fired before I for coaching game. But the not how this this astros thing is is interesting and credit to Gabe Kaplan today for hiring the first female assistant and Major League Baseball history glass ceiling Blah Blah Blah Katie sours. Good job I think Becky Hammon should be a head coach. But that's another topic for another time. This baseball thing is absolutely insane. And what did you think of. What were your initial reactions? When you saw the punishments for the Houston Astros which to give people background their general real manager and their their coach get fired? Although I guess that wasn't punishment they get suspended for a year as a result get fired the managers What is Lynch Okay God. Why so hinch and Jeff Ludlow you know Kristen ludlow's wife I'd unspent falling off the rails? What's the general managers is? What's at higher sleep anymore? Jeff knocking to work here anymore. It's like it's like blue now or something like that but it's so they suspended for year. They ended up getting fired For a more interesting and cognitive in cognizant and all my for a a version of this conversation which Greg Shire now having that actually makes sense and I use the right right names check out the underdog from earlier in the week but short of that those guys they get fired they. The Astros get fined five million dollars. I and the the Astros are fine. First and second round picks for the next two years. We also have Alex Cora fired from the Red Sox and and as you mentioned Carlos Beltran fired from the mets. Would you make all this. I mean I. I know a couple of weeks ago when the story first broke kind of called for heavy heavy sanctions and heavy. You know penalty for for this type of situation and I think we got it. The draft picks things certainly going to hurt the fines. Whatever there are Major League baseball team? That's two years or a year. Two years removed from winning the world series. Not Hurting for money losing the manager losing the GM it is what it is you know. Obviously those guys play a big role in building the team and obviously the manager the daily basis certainly helped but sure no outside of removing banner which doesn't solve anything anybody anyway because nobody cares in situations like data. I mean there's really nothing else. Major League baseball could of or should have done. It's hard to single out players. But then it's weird. Because Carlos Carlos Beltran was a player not getting penalized by Major League Baseball. But the mets chose to firem- anyway which is really weird. Interesting listing move. Well we don't know what shoe is about to drop because technically Cora hasn't been punished either we all know he's a dead man walking at this point. Yeah that's true. I mean it's funny. How the Astros just sort of like that guy did he did it? He doesn't work here anymore but he was the mastermind. It's it's a lot of. He said she said I think there. And I think it's it's kind of hard for the I don't even know cores role when he was on with the Ayrshire bench coach or whatever it was. It's kind of hard to blame him. Completely then act like Aj hinch those guys were completely out of the loop or or not involved in any way in the entire situation. Yes it's strange. Got A lot of stuff. One of the interesting astros stuff. I was looking over at the Sports Book Cook earlier today and I saw some interesting lines for who could end up coaching a couple of these teams and I do WanNa get into that but After that I want to a little bit back into this astro situation specifically because I think there's some hypocrisy going on within it and by that I mean a lot of hypocrisy going on within it so Vonda asks. Who's going to be the next manager of the Boston? Red Sox than the manager for Game One of the twenty twenty season. And the odds here we have. Ron Ron icke minus two fifteen Jason Varitek plus two fifty fifty Matt Cuartero Plus Two fifty. Tim Hires plus eleven hundred. Carless people's plus twelve and Dave Bush plus eighteen. Where's break main that money? Dan Money's on Jason Varitek all day every taste Captain Boston. The face of the Red Sox I I was amazed when you said plus money for Varitek I feel like that's their move. It saves face with their fan base. Yada Yada Yada. VR Tech was player. GotTa it Yeah Yeah No. I think we're on the same page there and I think it's also interesting the two I it's interesting to three managerial. Jobs are open on the sixteenth of January. That's pretty much unprecedented especially from these three organizations but vita also asks who's going to be the manager of the Astros for Game One of the twenty twenty season and this I think is a it's a little bit more difficult Joe Is spotted is modest one. Fifty Bucks showalter's plus four fifty macro plus five fifty Brad also mess plus eight fifty John. Gibbons plus nine fifty the Andy Green plus twelve fifty dusty Baker Twelve Fifty Hensley mullins plus twelve fifty and a Eduardo Perez. Who I would guess is the is going to be the mets coach? He was the runner up to Beltran for the mets coaching. Position is plus two thousand. I don't like that awesomeness former average going purely ex players. Yeah well. It's one of those things that almost makes the most sense. I mean awesomeness. He's been around the block a little bit managerial wise. I think he only in his last job. He only only got one year out of it. I can't think of even the team that he was either the diamondbacks or the homeless. I'm with I don't think it was the astros. But as time Baxter San Diego somebody a west coast but I think that could be a way that they go. I don't see I don't I don't see the the buck showalter would how do we. How do you sell your fans who are now used to playing in the world series in the AL every year? Yeah we're going to bring you the guy that led the orioles to like two hundred and thirty plus losses. The last two sees. Hello Yeah by the way Mr Manager of the Anaheim individuals twenty nine. I knew it I knew it was a west coast team. It's a it's a weird situation and I. I think it's incredibly strange that there were. We're not seeing players get suspended again. I know that there certainly could be another shoe to drop like I said but the reports that are being just vehemently it denied by Jose. altuve Alex Bregman and those guys are that they were wearing officers on their bodies. And can I tell you the more they look. Look into this the more that I find credence to it. And you know there's there's that video in two thousand nineteen where all the sudden you you know. Jose altuve wouldn't do the celebration. They always did when the shirt ripping celebration when Homerun He's basically like holding his Jersey down and saying don't rip my shirt to his teammates. So there's maybe something there but I I want to look at Jose Altuve as actual career and it seems like it. Breaks Down Pretty clearly when this happened. You know we go from. He comes into majorly at twenty one years old. He hits to Seventy six as a twenty two year old and two thousand twelve. He has to ninety as a twenty three year old in two thousand thirteen. He hits to eighty three with a three sixteen eighteen o BP then twenty fourteen you know. He has a Brady Anderson esque explosion and development process. Where where he goes from two eighty three to hitting three forty one with a three seventy seven? Oh be pig. We're talking about a fifty eight point increase in his batting average. It seems like if That might be a sign that something was going on starting in twenty four. I mean that is an insane. mm-hmm insane jump it. Whenever you hear the name Brady Anderson thrown around? That's never going to be positive. No now I mean listen the I looked at the buzzer stuff. A little bit today before to run out there and ref som some glorious stories glorious. Cyo Basketball but it was. I mean I find that so hard to believe. That's something just is because it's it's almost like it's almost like how dumb can you be like anything could happen. You could be diving to make a play diving. Get into a second or Third Jersey rips. Now there's was a sensor. That's just out there that people can see like there's so many variables there and ways to get caught. I mean unless they're just that cocky and confident that they're not gonna get caught the the only way I could picture that actually being a thing. It's just the only way like weird twitter account. That's been floating around around all day. Since the last couple of days that's like allegedly Carlos Beltran's niece but then the family denied it and Oh yes that was pretty critic a whole big thing said that like made accusations about Kleber Torres potentially also wearing stuff got you got Scott Brosius as a kid alleging Mike Trout Take Aga huge baseball's falling apart at the seams. Here it's nuts. Yeah Oh absolutely it is like it's. It's a nightmare scenario for this for Major League Baseball Right now an organization that already has more than its own share of problems for this stuff to come out and especially when we're talking talking about the two thousand seventeen. MVP of of baseball to potentially be actively cheating full-time. Oh my God I have. I have a buddy who actually said today that this is great for Major League Baseball. A publicity that they're getting is so great. DUDE THIS IS I. I know people say that all publicity is good publicity. This is terrible for Major League Baseball. People already don't care and now you're gonNa tell me that okay. Let's just say two of the last. Three champions were blatantly cheating and and it was all brought to the forefront and and now like who. Who's ever going to care about baseball again? This is not good publicity. It's a it's a terrible mindset to think like oh great. We're getting talked about on twitter but for the wrong reasons like this isn't gonNA drive people to watch your game. Nobody's got a tune in opening night Sunday night baseball walk. Let's see let's see how they handle this cheating scandal now. Nobody's going to care about that. It's just unbelievable. I just think it's crazy crazy to think that a guy could naturally increases batting average. Fifty eight points here. Yeah absolutely. That's not like if a guy's hitting like two twenty five or something like that and he has like awkward slump year with an established history of being better. Maybe if Bryce Harper had three eighteen next year or something like that. I don't think anybody would say oh would jump to his cheating but when you're talking about a guy who hit two eighty three in one hundred fifty two games by the way not a small sample size and then he jumps up to three forty one the next year. I also know that that's natural absolutely doing on the up enough. There's no doubt about it. No doubt about it. Yeah and then that next year up the batting average another fifty eight points for nineteen. It's just insane. They were clearly cheating and I think it was Alex. Wood was out there tweeting about how he'd much rather pitch to the guy on steroids and the guy who knows what's coming and that's your that's one of the most realistic reactions to this situation. That's out there. The steroid scandal pair pales in comparison to this. This is a this is a rock you to the core situation for Major League Baseball. Yeah this is what was it in in bonds book. He was talking about like steroids can make a bad player. Okay and okay player. Good a good player. Great and a great player. Barry Bonds Barry Bonds certainly was his biggest fan. But but I think that that's true. It doesn't like you know even we. We joke about Brady Anderson. All the time but Brady Anderson was borderline. all-star worry worry hit fifty home runs. He was an outstanding player. who was a very different player? But he was still an outstanding player in Barry Bonds on his own merits potentially a hall of Famer if he never takes a steroid yeah. This is a whole different story. Like this is taking a guy and I know you're not a big fan of your your wars and your advanced metrics and and stuff like that. But for the first three years of his career he was a one player basically which means like his presence in the lineup is worth one win above a replacement level player the next year he jumps to six point one. I mean. That's that's an insane jump and obviously like you said I'm not it's on like the biggest advance stats guy in the world and you know whatever but but to jump five points in a in a thing like that it is as you know absolutely insane for them for them to then say so. When it Alex Cora joined the Astros Pitcher Syrup coaching staff? Does it. Line up with that. I can check that I can. I can look very now but I just. I think it's insane. The this guy shouldn't be suspended. I know it's it's going to be really hard to prove exactly what happened and whether or not there were. Buzzers are not bother buzzers. He joined his Cora was only there in two thousand seventeen okay so then he gets the majority of the blame somehow if area if this sort of stuff was happening and obviously it's all alleged it's all guessing basically but jumps like that. Don't they don't just happen you. Don't it took a couple of extra. BP swings in the off season. I was in the you. Know the Dominican Summer League winner League and you know I just really started word seeing everything better like that doesn't exist. We'll these ironically. He's this is a good candidates with the Brady Anderson. I got contacts. Excuse Yeah Yeah. Yeah Yeah I can see now i. It's amazing how much easier it is..

"Dan Great to be back talking about Carl's ninety leak. It is good to be back talking about that. Let's jump right into what's happening now. There are players. Here's down on the fields. In Jupiter with instructional camp would use to be held right after the season but they felt and I think it's a smart move guys are worn out. They they were tired probably wanted to go home. Maybe some homesick and They said look. Let's scrap that. Maybe we get better attention to detail. Maybe we get better teaching if if we hold this right before spring training. And that's what they're doing right now aren't they. That's right. This is the third year of the cardinals. Instructional camp having been moved from September to January. Two weeks Going on now. The first couple of weeks of the year the four weeks of the year with thirty seven players down in Jupiter. I will mention though to a point. You made another another reason why they wanted to change. This was that a number of the players are still working on their college education. And by having instructional camp in September that precludes them from from being able to take classes in the fall term so by having this camp in January. You know those young men who still finishing their college education can get a fall term in and that's the primary reason reason it's another factor because we have to remember the cardinals draft a number of high school players. A number of these players signed after their junior year of college and they still may need another twenty twenty five hours of classes to before they get their important degree which is going to help them of course and the rest of their lives after their playing days are done. Yeah absolutely a lot of people I think are curious about what what instructional camp. What is that? WHO's on the field? Is Mike Scheldt there. Well let's go through that. What is instructional camp for those? That don't know well. It's basically hands on a much more hands on basis of Education and training for a group of players. They typically have classroom INFO classroom information and studying in the morning and then in the afternoon they get out on the field for For individual instructions with the roving instruction works for the system some of the managers some of the coaches and as you mentioned and they're focusing primarily at fundamentals. There aren't any games. The pictures of course are still just ramping up. So there's mostly pitcher's throwing bullpens more often than not it's coaches throwing batting practice Rather than pitchers But the idea is to give these young players Some focus on fundamentals. And let's start and to the point you made before The major league coaches are going to be in Jupiter next week. And they're GONNA be doing they're planning for Major Angelique Spring training camp and so that gives my show and and all you know all the coaches a chance to move over to the backfield's in the afternoon and then get a look at some of these young players so you know last year saw really all the major league coaches Around at different times during instructional camp you know getting a sneak peek at the at these thirty seven when young players brought floor. Yeah I find it really interesting with the guys that are down there. And it's not like every single minor leaguers down there. How do you get selected for the Instructional Cam? Well of course the cars don't say you know what their formulas but I do a lot of analysis of course of the backgrounds of the players and typically they're either players who are emerging urging or maybe some players who might have had injuries last year that they want to you know get them A moving a little ahead. It's not just the players on short season club so I stayed college Johnson City while there's a few of those actually you know the sweet spot of the the group of players are more like the class a high class. I say Along with the number players with Springfield and even some would memphis experience so really. It's kind of a kind of a mixed bag but the names are players that you recognize from Name brand guys like Gorman Malcolm Nunez down to some some lesser names including one young man Picture named Angel Klinka probably on health. Linka who I've not seen it because he pitched in the Dominican Summer League last summer. So we're talking about a young man who's been brought over to the United States. You know for his first I action in the US in this You know highly competitive but highly exclusive instructional camp so I can't just a wide variety of experiences of the players there. I'm also curious because year after year. Now the major league players are getting down there And many of them are already there right now in some of them have bought homes homes down there so they can get there and train well before spring training gets there. I'm curious how many of those guys make their way onto the field. Either to make a speech or go one one on one with a young prospect and talk to a kid and try to encourage them and tell them hey this is what it takes to make it to the big leagues. Well well I can tell you the last year I saw out here Molina there. Of course he has a winter home in the area so miles. Michael is there As well as a number of the you know the former former players who were involved in coaching roles players like Braden looper and Ryan Ludwig. So they're definitely yeah a number of Of players in former coaches around who can provide advice and counsel to these to these young players in structural care yesterday. The cardinals did make a little bit of news. They signed Oscar Hernandez he is a catcher. Does have big league experience number one. What do you think that means for Andrew Kisner and Matt leaders number two and and we'll get it well? Let's answer that. What do you think it means for those two guys? I don't really think it means a lot I think the cardinals wanting leaders back But like last year apparently his market is slow to develop. And so. I think everybody's waiting to see what's GonNa Happen. And if he falls back in the car's lap I'm sure they'd be delighted to have him back but it's going to be you know again on a one year deal at some reasonable reasonable money your Matt leaders former all star. You know. It was definitely did a good job for the cardinals left handed bat last year. You know he's probably looking to a place where maybe he can get a little more playing time than being behind you out of here. Molina which you know as everyone knows plays every day that he possibly possibly can so this doesn't preclude leaders return the signing of Oscar Hernandez really what it does is. It gives the cardinals another veteran guy on a minor league deal. Not Unlike Joe Hudson you know folks may have remembered last year was around and the cardinals always you know have these journeymen catchers Opinion was the guy before that you know who who are around and they can put in triple a. provided more experience if needed now the real question which none of us know the answer to. Is You know where the cardinals feel. Andrew Kisner defenses. This do they feel these defense is good enough that they can afford to have him basically sit out in the bullpen and warm up pitchers and Saint Louis or do they want him to continue to play every day A. and Memphis and it sort of looks like maybe the play every day in Memphis might be the preferred approach certainly if they bring leaders back That would be the approach Roach and now with the case of ours Hernandez they you know. They have an opportunity to go that way. If they so choose now never point to note Oscar Hernandez was on a minor league contract. So if they were to to you know have him on the team he would you know have to be added to the forty man roster but there's always ways to to move that around so that won't be a big factor actor. I think the big question will be. You know. We'll we'll we'll leaders come back and you know where to the cardinals really feel Andrew because there's Catching is and whether they I think you know. Another year in Memphis will be the best answer for his develop. Yeah you took me right to the second part of that question I was going to ask you Before which is where do you think his nerves is defensively is he a major league. Catcher is a major league. Backup catcher. Defensively is he a twenty six man roster guy where do you think he is with all those those options questions surrounding going into spring. I don't think anybody least. Nobody I've talked to has said they believe Andrew Kisner the finished product meaning that that he couldn't continue to grow and to get better so the question of the twenty six is an interesting one because with that extra spot on the roster you know if if leaders came back for example what they could easily do is have Kisner as the third catcher. Therefore you use leaders as a left handed pinch hitter and and he's still have kids that are in reserve if me was hurt late in the game or something so you know. They're still might be flexibility. Even you know to have three catchers on the roster and again I just to go back original point I think Oscar Hernandez is nothing more than a low price insurance policy at this point. You know. They'll probably keep him around. But you know there's not it's not outside the impossibility that if everybody's healthy. Everybody thinks things are going. Well they they you know they might even let him go not indicate. If there's there's nothing really at risk here by bringing another guy in their saloon wound for men you'll receive the perfect haircut complimentary beverage relaxing shampoo. I don't care if you're talking about College Football Basketball Baseball Major League baseball all the NBA. Whatever it's consistency consistency with your coaching staff consistency with your front office and ownership cardinals have that and they have consistency right now with their minor league managers? They made the announcement a couple of days ago. Seven of the nine minor league managers will return in twenty twenty. That's again and again you know it makes sense given an instructional camp is open You know a number of these coaches are down in coaches and managers are down and Jupiter working so they you know pretty well got their systems lined up a couple of TVD's but you know all the managers is you set are in place and most of them are coming back One of the changes inches is at golf city. Scarring at the Gulf Coast League where Joey Hawkins who was a former minor league. INFIELDER came back with a coach hitting coach last year. Now now he's GonNa be a new manager there but the names that everybody knows you know from the top Ben Johnson Memphis joke rusel Springfield Damigella Palm Beach Erica. Monte Jose Roberto Espinosa Spinoza who led Johnson city to a title last year. So all those guys are back. And that's great on the pitching side a lot of stability as well pitching coach side One new person listen to join the organization. This state colleges new pitching coach Dean Kika for who folks may remember was a left handed reliever for the cardinals left a few years ago. You know. Continue to bounce around get a little bit of major major league action here and there but do you think they're seeing a number of organizations now and he's decided it isn't extent is coaching and so he's the new pitching coach at State College now on the hitting coach side just as we talked about stability in management in the hitting coach side pretty much. Everybody's changed chairs. But again I think the top five or six hitting coach's while they're all in new assignments were in the organization previously but then at the lower levels there are four or five new hitting coaches who've been brought in and I think what we're seeing here is sort of you know year two of the of the new kidding regime that the cardinals have a new Minor League hitting coordinator and Rothstein.

Brian Good morning to you. How are you and you know you've been around the game a long time and watching this game a long time you you ever seen anything like the four games at at Wrigley field that we just witnessed over the weekend was baseball at its best. I mean you didn't have to cardinal's fan or a cubs fan just to be a fan of baseball to see the the the momentum swings and the excitement it was just an obviously to come out as well as it did for the cardinals. You know probably exceeded everyone's expectations and you. That'll be what this season is remembered for clearly that series absolutely and well. Let's get into postseason play and see what it might be remembered for two but this would be the one that probably he puts him in to postseason play We know that they're in the playoffs and we'll see if they can wrap up a division here. there were some news made yesterday with the removal and dismissal dismissal of the minor league coordinator for hitting your thoughts on that. I'm listening Dan. George Greg is most folks. No probably heard the first one he was part of the tool interim hitting coaches that were brought up last July John. Maybe was fired and of course Marc mark asked what was the other and he remained with a major league club as assistant under new hitting coach. Jeff Albert and Kelly was dismissed midseason and there was a lot of talk talk of the differences in approach and the organization wanting to speak with with more of a singular voice and from the early appearances. It seems that greer's departure sure is another step in that you know getting all the hitting coach coaches in the organization under one philosophy that being that philosophy of Jeff Albert you know it's it's funny to in talking with John Moselle Lock in some of the others they are always asked about all the strikeouts in the cardinals actually are okay. I mean they strike out a bunch but everybody is streaky out a ton and Major League baseball in the idea's been put a premium on putting the ball in play. That's Jeff Albert in its simplest form arm but really this is. This is baseball in two thousand nineteen and beyond. It looks like you're going to have to deal with a ton of strikeouts. They it'd be interesting to kind of philosophy. That's passed down from Jeff through the minor leagues and see what they can do from there back and read a little more about yes becker on one of the things I had forgotten wars voice got a he's a certified strength and conditioning specialist and has a master's in exercise science so you know he's really into understanding ending the differences in the players bodies and their approaches and realizing that hey not everybody is necessarily going to have the same strength it sounds you're trying to couple what the numbers say with what the players body tells him is an important part of his approach so replacing. George Career Career Russ Steinhorn does have relationship with Jeff Albert in Houston Organization. What do we know about Russ thirty thirty four years old quite a contrast to the seventy four year seventy two year old career he spent five years in Houston System Restaurant Horn three years hitting coach in the New York Penn League in the year each managing in the Dominican Summer League and in the Midwest Week and then he went to Clemson University and handled their player development cut and spent the two thousand nineteen season as the assistant hitting coordinator phillies system so rescue young guy obviously has his work with Jeff Albert during their time in Houston and now only has a bachelor's degree but also a master so again a student of the game and we'll get to know a lot what about wrestling orange as two thousand glut he begins with instructional camp down in Jupiter. Probably January Brian Gimme an idea of what a minor league hitting coordinator is going to do what what is his summer like generally speaking you're roving around to the various minor early affiliates think of him as the supervisor of all the hitting coaches certainly the hitting coach at any particular minor league clubs is working closely with the manager and the pitching coach the the younger coach the fourth coach but in order to coordinate hitting instruction across the organization. That's really what the coordinator does so. He makes sure that all they hitting coaches are are feel firing in a similar manner any also of course comes in and works with players himself so you know it's not just a a the job where they don't have responsibility for teaching as well and I'm I'm guessing that's one of the things that appeals to to restaurant in order to continue to work directly with young players. It is interesting you you go with a young guy as opposed to a seventy two year old. The game does change and I'm not saying that George was outdated at all That's not my point but it is a difference.

"At a baseball, good week or so. A baseball for the giants probably playing the best ball. They played all season long. They take two or three from the Milwaukee Brewers, which I certainly didn't see coming after they swept the Padres for two games. And you know the ballpark that we keep saying, you know as far as moving the fences in goes. And then we see visiting teams come in and knocked the ball out of the yard like it's no big deal. The padras came in and were kind of stymied didn't look great against the giants or offense wasn't electric. Giants took two of those games or both of those games. And then they go down to are out to Colorado. And the Rockies and the Padres put together the most runs ever in a four game series. So they get stymied a little bit. And then the brewers come to town on the giants with Jeff Samara who didn't pitch terribly yesterday Madison Bumgarner and drew Pomeranz bottle them up a little bit when the brewers can come at you. When you've got a right, ended pitcher their lineup is a lot different. They'll throw Ben gamble up there to top, I think they had six hitters in their line-up yesterday that were left handed to start against the margin. So they match up much differently against against a right handed pitcher in their lineup or in your lineup than they would otherwise against the lefty. But overall a couple of storylines in the weekend that I thought were worth noting and now's the time of year where you start seeing some of the contending teams are going to do not just for who are the contenders and pretenders, but really which moves they might start to make and they've already begun. We made note of this a couple of weeks ago that what's the calendar flipped June? You're gonna start seeing teams get active. You're gonna start seeing teams start going to adding pieces that they need now that they want early us. Maybe they're not overpaying for. Them. And one of those moves happen yesterday or two days ago actually on Saturday. We find out Edwin Encarnacion big designated hitter. Slugger, former Toronto Blue Jay for a number of years, spent time in Cleveland was up in Seattle and the mirrors in the Yankees, have had kind of like a back and forth trade pipeline for the last year or so they keep sending players back and forth, just to Sheffield, the, the latest one, I think acquired by the Mariners for James Paxton. He was the Yankees number one pitching prospect. He's now up in Seattle, but they've made a move or a couple of moves this off season with each other, and they did. So again, on Saturday and went Encarnacion heading from the Mariners to the to the Yankees. She's leading the American League, by the way in home runs when the Yankees make that trade for him. So he's gonna slotting designated hitter. Yankee still sitting in second place, right there behind Tampa Bay. But they start a series of Tampa. Coming up here, now you're wondering. Why are we talking AL? He's fall. What are the Yankees and the rays have to do with me? Well, it's worth noting that the Yankees inequality. Edwin Encarnacion are only paying for half of his contract for the remainder of this season. The Mariners picked up a big part of that tab. And the Yankees also sent over a guy named one thing a minor league pitcher, the reason MRs of note is because the Yankees claim to still have room under their whatever their luxury tax threshold, or whatever their number is that they're trying to hit on their salary cap are on their team salary cap, but as far as going to acquire another player, the Yankees claimed is still have room to do that. So you start wondering how are the Yankees going to make another move? Who are they going to make a move for? They've I won't say gutted their farm system with their farm system, not as good as it was two years ago or three years ago. Dave's over there pretend to throw left handed, yet they're looking at a left handed pitcher who's maybe gonna come on the cheap. I'm thinking, maybe two or three pro-rated months, Madison. Bumgarner could get the job done now. The Yankees kind of a log jam in their outfield right now. They've got Brett Gardner who's at an older player. Thirty three thirty five something like that. They've got Aaron judge. Getting ready to come off of the, the injured list on Tuesdays. He'll be activated. Tomorrow, Jen Carlos Stanton is still down in AAA in Scranton or Wilkes bar. Wherever the hell he's playing ball right now but he's almost back so they are running out of room in their outfield so much so that the best player in their lineup really. It has been the best hitter in their lineup for the last fifty games while everybody's been down with the injury. Clint Frazier their top prospect, who they acquired from the Cleveland Indians, believe in a deal that got them. Or maybe in the same deal that netted them who's that lefty, Andrew? I'm blanking on his Andrew Miller. There we go to relief pitcher dangerous dude at the end of a that 2017 World Series with, with the Chicago Cubs. So Clint Frazier, who's the top outfield prospect in fifty four games. So far, this year was hitting eight fifty eight fifty five to eighty five. Batting average eleven doubles eleven home runs. He was fourth on the active roster in extra base hits twenty two extra base hits he's gotten three, seventy. Five with earners in scoring position. And yesterday, the Yankees told him, you're going back to AAA. He was shocked to find out that after two eighty five over the last two months, he's headed back to AAA because the Yankees just do not have room for them. So they're on the situation now where they're starting to look to add a piece to add somebody to their lineup or too their pitching rotation. I don't think they're going out to get more bullpen arms. Bullpen has been pretty good. They're still planning on getting Luis Severino back at some at some point to Mingo Airmont to Mingo or monitoring isn't gonna come Sunday. Airman big power, right? Arm was on the injured list as well. So the Jews are looking for a starting pitcher where better to look than your San Francisco. Giants for a guy like Clint Frazier. This is the drum gonna start beating because the clearly are, are they're going to have to give up an asset if they want to get somebody else. I think the other question that they have is about. Can they acquire another pitcher, maybe not quite of the same status as Bumgarner or not quite as as of the status of maybe Marcus Stroman up in Toronto is a guy who could get moved? So Carrie Crowley, we were talking Margie, and I were with him on the patio this weekend. And he thinks this is a real possibility that, Bumgarner the Yankees is looking more and more realistic in that. They made a move that was still going to allow them to acquire a starting pitcher. So the Yankees new murders were lead of continues to build and get stronger. They add the American League leader in home runs. And then you've got you've got some room now to go get a starting pitcher, David laughing, I know rich get richer. But this one day this blew my mind this weekend you paying attention to anybody's with the Houston Astros. They've got this young guy. Twenty one year old six foot five two hundred sixty pound dude name is your Alvarez Alvarez a Cuban dude? He gets signed by the dodgers back in two thousand sixteen about that far. I signed him to to the dodgers. They sent him down to the Dominican summer league. He's got. Pretty good season for them. And then the dodgers decide. Well, we need to we need to acquire some bullpen help as we make it run towards the towards the National League pennant. They flipped him to the Houston Astros. For Josh feels just feels a relief pitcher, of course, your Alvarez had more than twenty home runs in the minors. He was sitting in the high three hundred three seventy three eighty down in AAA round rock. They called them up last week. He's now plead five major league games. He's got four home runs a day, you know who traded your Alvarez from the dodgers to the Houston Astros. Yeah, you guessed it was far side. That's right. This guy who's now the one of the best young power hitters in baseball. And Dave when this guy makes contact the ball jumps off the bag. Your Alvarez is on an absolute tear right now through the American League at least to get his big league career started. So Dave Fleming was joking about that with Martin yesterday. Say just cloud, the diets have to deal with this guy for the next decade in the National League West. So some of the stuff from the weekend with the giants. So that was fun Will Smith. Now. Eighteen of eighteen and save opportunities. He's been lights out this season. He would credible on Friday night against Christian yelich. Then we got the battle again on Saturday, yelich took him deep yelich. Unbelievable home run by him just kind of flip this bad at it in the ball went over left centerfield like fifteen twenty rows, deep gelatin exciting player, Kevin pillar has been hot as of late. He did drop a ball on Saturday, and then exciting game. Eight seven giants and that one. But in his last seven games nine at twenty five you sit in three. Sixty got an over thousand did Homer on Friday, and Saturdays driven, and five runs and surprisingly enough Evan longoria over the last week has not been so bad, either seven Twenty-three. It's three or four batting average seven ninety five Opie s and another thing day. Fleming pointed out yesterday that I think was worth noting is going back to last season. Everyone Goria has the highest defensive runs saved at third base for any third baseman in the National League that includes Don, that includes Aeronautica, we're talking back to the middle of last season. So impressive stuff from Evan. Longoria, at least with the glove and he's been hitting a little better as of late. All right. We gotta get into some other stuff here on the other side. When we come back you to talk about the big news of the weekend. It's not the US open. It's not the US women winning three and then golf clapping their way to a celebration. It's all about what's going on in the NBA, the NBA, reigns supreme even in the offseason the draft is on Thursday and moves have been made. Anthony Davis headed to the LA, Lakers. Is it a good move or the Lakers, absolutely gutted will discuss when we return to the leadoff spot on the sports leader all the negative things that are supposed to happen to me during the week on Mondays. As the leadoff spot with Adam Copeland on KNB are six eighty sports leader better life with Dr Sanjay Gupta. Never heard the term empty calories..

"Six eighty. Hi, nice that Barry bloom with us. So a lot of Burien spring training. Barry, how are you? Good morning. How are you? Good. Very good. And well, you know, I know that San Diego's a team you have followed closely for many many many years giants in San Diego. I two games your your impressions first of all of the Padres. Well, I mean. You know as advertised, you know, their offense with Machado and Jason. That know a lot better at one thing as I watched a coming up through the minor league tonight. I saw a lot the thing that have trust me the most was speed on the base past. Yeah. This guy is as fast as Sanders to me going from I home, absolutely unbelievable. I've seen taking your send data ready pitching surprise me to a certain degree as we're going to their minor leaguers now in the next few games. But it's hard to understand. What is the Padres pitching? Right now is that good or the giant hitting is that bad? Today, we see Nick Margaritis anything about him or the guy tomorrow paddock. Yeah. Well, I saw Margaret vicious in spring training. You know, he's you know, kind of a multi pitch pitcher with a with a decent fastball. But. You know, this guy wasn't wasn't even be. With the big club. Training started. Yeah. They were giving a lot of youngsters early starts in spring training. You just give him some experience before they shut the back to the minor leagues. But you know, this is state of where their pitching staff is right now the two guys. Excuse me, the two guys that you saw ready are are the only experience starters, and they have twenty major league starts, but you know, h between the two of them and how you're going to a guy. One game above single-a at an excellent spring. He's a guy that got. You know in in in in a toilet Miami for Fernando Rodney. Yeah. They've they've mentioned great great acquisitions, but he's also coming off. Tommy, John surgery was limited on innings last year. They'll be limited on innings again this year. So I think if they can get a solid five innings additive f tomorrow and the way he pitched some point there is less spring start at I think the last one was on the backfield. Get struck out twenty guys with thirteen headaches. Is it a nice kid fun guy wears suits to the park every day pitches as a great sense of humor? Really nice kid. And so we'll see I think he's is it up and coming player for them. But you know, with the the guys they have on board for the next few days. If the giants don't get the offense going there. Probably never gonna get. It's gone. Very good. And I think we we said that in the show today. Barry bloom, joins us, Forbes dot com. It is Derek Rodriguez today against Margaret vicious. And tomorrow, we've got Jeff samardzija going against Chris paddock where the Padres made some trades paddock for Fernando Rodney turned down and look. Good scouting. And then about getting financing tatty. Sue you've been all over that one for a year. I know back on Twitter back and forth with the fans, but I shield about that. James? Yeah. Met strong moves another up and comer. They got her a bevy of like, rob butcher. And you know, Bauer, you know, they got them from Kansas Kansas City a couple of years ago to I mean AJ. Prowler? Trai? They flipped out guys. Like trade turns people like that were in the organization before he got there, and he really cleaned up the organization of a lot of players. But now his redemption is really a good job. Getting other other talent from other organizations. The problem is they yet it on anybody who they drafted or any other international side. So that's still to come. So what you're seeing here now is the product of some of these traits based. Yeah. Boy, you gotta get lucky and you have to have good scouting. And you hope that's where the giants are heading. And we'll be having this conversation about the giants in about three or four years when those kinds of players mature, and they this Tom Murphy, I think the catcher that they got from Colorado. They flipped him to Seattle for Dominican summer league type player who you know, big arm and all that kind of stuff. So we'll see if they get lucky with it. What's your take on the beginning of the season? So far. A lot of home runs, obviously with the dodgers. Sherzer and degrom Syndergaard today in Strasbourg Toronto. Blue Jays starting pitching Aaron Sanchez today. Join shoemaker and Stroman Tigers can't get any any runs against them. It's been a kind of an interesting start. Yeah. So far, you know, what you've seen is early indications of the teams that really made a concerted effort the offseason. A really played. Well, so far. With the match the Mets got come out of the gate. Great with Syndergaard. And it's been a. A good start when it comes to you know, those teams I thought the Arizona dodgers series. So far has been very interesting especially with that comeback yesterday. And that you know, the dodgers pretty much in the same sort of situation where they were a year ago with even less veggie divisions really wide open to the Rockies to take. Don't you think? Oh, I think it's a great division. I think the National League the whole league, you know, then the American League maybe has the best couple of teams. But the National League is about ten or eleven teams can do. We'll let you run and catch up with you. Enjoy the game today. Okay. Thanks a lot here. That's Barry, bloom, Forbes dot com. I know he's fighting that bronchitis that he's had for part of spring training. So we'll let them go. And and relax. All right. We'll take a break as I said, we could take a couple of calls came be our summer. Your thoughts. About the scoreboard. If you've seen it. I have a couple of thoughts about that. And just a little bit about I like to call so far, you know, thoughts about the team. And I've got a couple of text messages here to to go through as well. I know our contest is going on. We've had a lot of others. Josh, how are you? I've had a lot of guesses on our contests for regional Joe's to get in the pool for the may dinner. I love these dinners ref. I really am mardi gras is coming up next Thursday night at original Joe's and looking forward to that. But the score of today's game and the tiebreaker the number of hits for the giants, and that's eight away came or tweeted and very easily at baseball Marty. We can do that so much more to talk about we'll set up a little more of this game. Craig Elston from the mighty six ninety is going to join us at the bottom of the hour talk a little bit more about this. He's down there, of course in San Diego and talk a little bit more about this series. That's coming up. But boy, you know, I always say we you do this for enough hours, and you do figure something out, and you know, we communicate through radio, we communicate through blogs, text messaging, Instagram watching different shows and. I guess Twitter for some reason Twitter brings out more of the negative feelings. You know, people are comedians. Everyone's gotta gotta take so really just blasting the giants for the first couple of days. But here the calls and hear people talk about it. It is game three of one sixty two. And I think what we do. Learn though, I really do think this of of of trying to force younger players into significant roles on the team. Now, if you have Fred Lynn coming up or you got Tim Lindstrom coming up or you've got will Clark coming up or a new Bobby bonds or Barry Bonds, or you know, those kind of players coming up. You know, you you, you know, even Brandon Crawford took time remember that let the kids play Brandon bell took time. So you really have to put them into situations. The Ken life. The Ken life is putting yourself in a situation where you can succeed, and that's the key. And I think it's sort of forcing this situation right now of putting these kids in situations, maybe that they're not going to succeed, and you have to deal with that. So we'll we'll find out. But as I say, I liked the show because the more we talk about it the more you figure out what people are thinking about. And look opening days coming up. We've got of course, the post game tonight. We've got a long show tomorrow as well for pregame postgame. So on talk a lot about opening days, maybe some of your favorite opening days or what opening day means to you. So we we can work that in at some point but much more to talk about. We see Derek Rodriguez tonight. The most important thing for the giants is to pitch. Well, right now because they're not hitting. So you better pitch. But look they gave up two runs in four runs. And you know, they gave up six runs and scored one. So they're too. But at some point if you pitch like this, and you do get the the bats going because as one of the caller said, I mean, you know, let belt play let Crawford play panicked playland gory. Play Posey play. And eventually they're going to do close to what they what they do. But this is a new year, and they're a year older and baseball's a year younger, and we have to deal with that part of new pitchers and pitcher sewing harder. And all of a sudden we see a kid today. You know, doesn't walk. Anybody strikes out a ton of minor leaguers, of course, when you play against the guy like this. You just want to get him into deep counts. You want to get the pitch count up. You don't want to chase his pitches because you want him to. You know have to work, and that's going to be the key to the game. For me today is make make Nick Margot vicious work a lot, but he gives up hits even to minor leaguers because he doesn't walk people. So that's his thing says I'm going to throw the ball over the plate. Well, you can do that in the lower minor leagues. But as you get into the, you know, the major leagues if you put the ball with the plate, and they hit it it goes somewhere. So let's see what the giants can do with that today. All right more coming up, right? After this on the sports leader talking baseball with mardi Laurie. KNB N B R six eighty the sports leader, they were smoking sections on airplanes in restaurants, and then gradually it got.
