In fact around twenty percent of the nation's gross domestic product comes from foreign visitors though the population numbers just ten million people dominicans. Welcome more than six million vacationers every year. Almost half of them come from the united states in two thousand eighteen. A disturbing trend began among the tourists. One that would go unnoticed for almost a year. Someone or something was killing them in june that year a fifty one year old. Little did she know it would be her final holiday. One evening event in her fiance had a drink from their room's minibar before going to bed in the middle of the night her partner hurting gurgling sound thinking nothing of it he turned over and went back to sleep but when he woke he that was dead. Yvette was just the first in a string of tragedies. The following month of forty five year old man named david harrison traveled to the dominican with his wife. Dawn they state at a different resort. But like yvette. David seemingly had a target on his back one day. He returned from snorkeling saying he felt unwell after he dawn fell asleep. The unthinkable happened. David woke in a cold sweat. Unable to move his wife tried to get help but it was too late. David had suffered a heart attack which caused his lungs to fill with fluids. I condition known as pulmonary dima. He didn't survive as two thousand. Eighteen ended it. Seemed like yvette. And david were to random fatalities but in early two thousand nineteen four. More people died seventy eight year old jerry current in january thirty one year old tracy jerome gesture junior in march and sixty five year old john corcoran and sixty seven year. Old robert wallace. In april each of these tragedies were reported to the authorities but no one made any connection between them until forty one year old miranda shop werner on may twenty fifth two thousand nineteen miranda arrived at the bahia principe bougainville resort with her husband. IRS Says Its Own Error Sent $1,200 Stimulus Checks To Non-Americans Overseas
"Now. Earlier this year, our team of reporters discovered that stimulus money from the first coronavirus relief package had been mistakenly sent to citizens off other countries. U. S government previously blamed the recipients for that error. But as Sasha Pfeiffer from our NPR investigations, team reports, the Iris now says those non Americans were not always at fault and the mistake Is likely to happen again, if more stimulus checks go out. Suzanne Wig force is a 78 year old citizen of Sweden, who lives in the country's capital, Stockholm, and over the summer, she was surprised to get a check in the mail from the United States Treasury, followed by a letter signed by President Donald J. Trump. And he says the White House Washington You lied. 31st. Your economic impact payment has arrived. My fellow American. It was a stimulus check for $1200. And I thought I can't believe it. They're sending it to me. Why? I mean, it's crazy, isn't it? It's crazy, she says, because she is not entitled to that money. The only people eligible for stimulus checks are U. S citizens and individuals that for tax purposes, the iris calls resident aliens. Suzanne. Weak force is neither of those now. Previously, the U. S government said the reason many non citizens mistakenly received checks is they filed incorrect tax returns that made them appear to be American. But weak force does not file a U. S tax return. Asked about this by NPR, The Iris now acknowledges that some non Americans erroneously receive stimulus money through no fault of their own. I'm just upset. I love American. This is so wrong because I saw that number of people were being evicted every month in Chicago, for instance, and I thought One of those families would have needed this stimulus check. Why should a Swedish citizen living abroad received $1200? The iris now says it mistakenly sent checks to some non citizens who receive Social Security and other federal benefits. People like WIG force. She receives a small social security payment from having worked in California for several years. And she believes that's why the iris erroneously sent her a stimulus check. I'm not gonna cash it. I'm just going to leave it here. There's no way I'm going to catch this money. It doesn't belong to me. Since Congress passed its coronavirus relief package in March, the U. S government has put no mechanisms in place to prevent these mistakes from happening again. That means if a new relief plan passes in the final weeks of the Trump administration or during the Biden administration, and if it includes more stimulus payments, some of that money is again likely to mistakenly end up in mailboxes overseas. Weak force is even likely to get another check how much money is leading out from the Treasury Department? Because of these similares checks. I wonder, the U. S. Government cannot answer that question. The Treasury did find that as of late May, $34 million in stimulus had gone to people who filed a tax return with a foreign address. But that includes eligible people like US citizens living abroad, and it does not include citizens of other countries who received a check at a U. S address. For example, NPR interview to citizen of the Dominican Republic who was not eligible, he had got a check at his former address in Massachusetts. At $34 Million also does not include people like WIG Force who got a check but don't file a U. S tax return at all. I think the poor folks in the iris don't have the bandwidth to go chasing this end. A. Kelleher is a vice president at Sprint tax, which does us tax preparation for nonresidents. It'd be great if they did, because I believe that there's millions of dollars that has gone to people that went entitled to it. Certainly not the intended recipients. Spring tax has clients from about 150 countries who mistakenly received stimulus check. Ex. Kelleher said the most common were India, China, South Korea, Vietnam and the United Kingdom, as well as numerous nations in Latin America. It's awful when we hear of millions of dollars going into the wrong hands, but was probably within a somewhat acceptable threshold of error or margin of error acceptable, he said, because Congress opted for speed over accuracy when it flooded the U. S economy with money last spring. Many non Americans who received a check and error are now trying to return it because they worry it will jeopardize their visa or immigration status. Course. There's equally thousands there is saying, Well, if they were silly enough to make this mistake, it's their mistake, and I'm not gonna give it back until they ask for it. Van Shockley falls in that category. He's 74 years old and was born in Pennsylvania. But he moved to Australia after becoming disillusioned with US politics in the 19 sixties. I had always been depressed when JFK was killed. I just couldn't get over that. So I started looking for someplace else start all over. So he gave up his U. S citizenship and has now been an Australian citizen for about a half century. His last trip to the U. S. Was 40 years ago. But he to receive stimulus money even though he's not eligible for it and does not file a U. S tax return. That was a waste together. My check the mail. Love pulled out a check. Federal Reserve Treasury thingamajig along with the eagle on that it's made out to me. What's the sum of America? What the hell's going on here? Why am I getting a check from the government? Just like Suzanne Wig Force in Sweden? Van Shockley in Australia suspects he mistakenly got a check because he receives Social Security from having worked in the U. S before moving overseas. First I thought it was a joke. And then I went down to the bank says Can you do some way of verifying that this is legal and the girl come back after five minutes. This is it's legal. You got the milling. Thank you, ma'am. I didn't ask for the money. I didn't expect any money. But as soon as I got us stuck into the bank, he ain't getting it back. Shockley attributes the mist ake two U. S. Government incompetence, complete stupidity. Just not doing their job properly. U S. Treasury officials said they are quote continuing to assess the accuracy of the stimulus program and the recovery efforts for any erroneous payments. In the meantime, they told NPR the Iris is relying on individuals to voluntarily return these payments. Sasha five for NPR News.

"You know, it always baffles me because again, the running joke is the Mets have the worst medical staff in the his history of baseball. Cry. I mean, just hire be out just say, hey, he goes that affects you get out of here. Lord. Yeah, I, I don't know what you make of this. I mean, realistically, Cessnas has gone from a high value trae target for teams to someone that you might actually be stuck on the hook for for long-term disability. If this doesn't, if he has to go get surgery and this and because he's on the payroll, this doesn't work out. The Mets are technically going to be on the hook for begins. It's going to be their their, their, their specialists working on them. So again, I don't know how they find themselves in these predicaments, but the the Mets got a whole lot going on and the more they talk about not trading the Graham unless they get a king's ransom for them. The more I'm shaking my head because at this stage, the Mets have to do complete rebuild of that entire roster because unlike the keys because the Mets won't. Spend any money. They can't do a soft rebuild where they pay up for a couple of free agents to stabilize the the core and just buy up a bunch of prospects in other countries in the Dominican Republic and other areas. I mean, realistically, they're up a creek because the best thing they did was answering awful familiar for as much as they got because they got the about a million dollars in international spending money from the as in addition to a couple of prospects, which, again, I don't know what the as are doing because familias of rental now very good rental by the way because to me, if if it's between familiar and Britain, I rather take the guy with better upside and Britain than familiar who I know can't close games as evidence in the World Series. You know, there are certain things that I see teams do. That I will never understand. You got the as who are three games back of the Mariners for the second wildcard spot. So we're not even talking about the first wildcard spot with the Yankees. We're talking about the second wildcard spot the as you know they, they, they're on the decent enough streak. Where they've one of approximately twelve of the last sixteen games to get themselves this mic. So they've done quite a bit. Now I get the fact that they think the mirrors are week because of the fact that the Mariners for all intents and purposes are a plus one run differential even though the twenty games above five hundred. Again, I get it. The Mariners are defying logic by being twenty games over five hundred with a one plus one run difference overall,.

"We're already developing a plan because we want to share this film in haiti as much as possible so we've done a screen to screenings in in puerto brings in haiti and we have a number of partners there that were working on developing suv different programmes with them so we have all kinds of ideas in our head and were really you know pretty busy ask about the prospects for the film that continue having your as much impacts we can yeah that's awesome it's just it's always great to hear about a film project like this you know really playing a significant role in influencing the outcome of these issues so on really awesome to hear about all those successes so you know my my final question for you as you know you we talked a lot about you know sort of how you came to become involved in this film and you know this is your first film you didn't really have a background of filmmaking beforehand are you gonna make another film are you are you converted to a filmmaker now what what are your plans for the future so you know i think my primary job right now is trying to figure out what is the the the best way to have this film that we've made continue a big impact as possible both in the dominican republic and haiti and also i mean you know in other places and so we're continue to do screenings and festivals and um and trying to get the word out you've been publishing op ed pieces in articles in the dominican republic regularly so that's our immediate goal and then you know i use the film the idea film for me it's a powerful tool for environmental awareness for creating social change and so i think it's something i want to continue with although i don't i don't have a specific project right now in mind because i'm really try to concentrate all my efforts in death by 1000 cuts.

"At the screening that i attended at the dominican republic environmental film festival i mean it just you could feel like the anger in that room right of like this this grave injustices like being perpetrated on these people and it's like what do we do about this right i mean i i guess i'm just wondering like there there must have been like a lot of thought going until like the the tone of the peace and like how you wanted to end it yeah and i had the we did this very much on purpose and we really thought about it mm all lot because one of the frustrations you know and i can now a filmmaker but even just as a environmentalists watches a lot of documentary films with environmental subjects what are the great frustrations is that you present these very complex in a difficult and complicated issues um and it takes you the better part of the movie to explain them but then you know in order that the the the the viewer feels okay with what they're seeing you kind of attack on something about you know what they can do at home and your they can recycle and they can you know screw in of for forest incandescent lightbulb and you know and they can you know you donate to nature conservancy in that will solve the problem and these urges much bigger problems and and what our message really wanted to be was that these are big challenges this is important for the identity in the future of this country these are lessons that are incredibly important not just for the island of hispanola dominican republic in haiti but for other places as well and we wanted to leave people will sort of a pit in their stomach and feel like wow.
