And then they so the pigeon stops say at a truck stop. Losing valuable time. They look there's a Howard Johnson's. Not long. Stop long. Lineup. So the pigeon racing scene. It's very vigorous in in China. I had no idea, but there is pigeon racing in in the United States as as that story. I had Mike Tyson does. Yeah. Yeah. Raised them because he liked to know he he actually raced pigeons as well. I don't think he does it anymore, but he had racing pigeons. Peter gotta hit Peter doesn't care for pigeon racing. Because you know, if something that the pigeons just like to do but pitas against it. Anyway. Maybe we should hold like the cannonball run of pigeon racing. You mean, there's a big fat pig. And a good looking. Dom deluise? Yeah. One that smokes several really hot female pigeons to distract the other male pigeons. Burt reynolds. I wouldn't be surprised if there is that kind of goes on. "This thing is like still never say. It's terrible. It it's like watching like a bad Robert Altman movie except with monsters. It's just monsters talking to each other for for hours. God damnit this movie sucks. Did you also see that? They're shudder. Course, we love shutter is doing a critters television show. Yes. Is it a shower? A new movie shudder is doing a TV show. Scifis doing a new movie. Okay. I believe I've seen critters one. I have not seen the other critters fun. I'd be more curious to see the new movie over the TV show. I don't know that I need, you know, ten episodes of critters, but you know, I owned the four pack, and I enjoy the film's they're fun. They're fun like sort of monster be movie fund want us to Capri. Oh, and. Christ. I don't even want to be in like the fourth one. And I didn't even realize. But but you ever movie called Munshi? Voiced by Dom deluise was like this little sort of troll thing. I yeah. I don't I barely haras five in when I was a kid. It was supposed to be a child's comedy it terrified you horrified. Well, you also scared a little monsters. I was scared a little mice. Craziest thing I've ever heard. Sorry. I was very Scheldt. Let's get into this Oscars recap. I mean, look let's start with the elephant in the room. I address the green book thing right off the bat. Have you seen it? I haven't Joe don't you? Don't you feel you should have seen it before launching into whatever you're about to launch? I'm not criticizing that at one best picture. Okay. So no doesn't. I don't wanna watch. It. Did it looks like a made for TV a bad movie to me? "John. Four I'll say it again. She had a voice of an angel man. She had the voice of an angel. Karen carpenter Michael in Iowa. Requesting the carpenters, and that's the Christmas song. Three one two nine eight one seven two hundred by the way, do you know who wrote that song, Dan, I do not because my good friend Mel Torme? Oh, that's right. Hey, man, you know, Mel Torme. No, roy. I don't know of him. Was it an egg salad or chicken sales unit? I recommended a tuna salad recommended where can I get a tuna salad sandwich. Kid. Mel Torme only ROY would bring Mel Torme three days in a row to the screening room to watch movies. Fantastic. Welcome back. Everybody Nick to Gilio here on seven twenty WGN. We're talking about great TV talk show moments. And and if you have some three one nine eight one seven two hundred we have yet, another aggravating, and and and annoying. Blackhawks expressed the playback that'll be coming up in just a few minutes, and we would love to hear from you three one two nine eight one seven two hundred here's Ruth on WGN. Hi, ruth. Hi. I was just remembering when Johnny would go out and cheat audience, and he would try and stump. Doc, doc severinsen, you know, with different movie or I'm different songs. Yeah. And do you recall that when they would I mean thing that maybe that he would get him? And then these people would go and singer, some it was called it was called stump the band. Oh, it was called stump the band, and it was dock and Ed Ed would be the doc, doc. And then now they would make up a song. And then they would they would inevitably get it wrong. Remember add near now that you say that. But anyway, I thank you Ruth, you Rusalka. That's very funny, stump the band, stump. The band was always one of my favorites. 'cause what they would do was. They would he would go up, Johnny. We'd go out into the audience and like talk to somebody in the audience, and then they would say the title of of a song, and they were usually really silly titles, and they would cut to dock and head who were sitting right by on the bandstand. And they would say I think Jimmy over here on the on the Trump knows that one and then they would play like the song. And then like, doc severinsen which sing he, and he and Edward sing like made up lyrics and then come back to Johnny. And Johnny would ask the the the the contestants like is. That is is that correct? And they're like, no, let's correct at all. And then they would sing the song and the band would join in with them. It was a classic bits dumped the band classic bit. So. Oh. We got some texts here wild bill's says, I attended a Jerry Springer taping fifteen years ago in Chicago. It was a guy you never see on TV who started all the Jerry Jerry chance and any heckling during commercial breaks guests onstage were well behaved during taping. There were moments when it looked like the guests were suddenly realizing. Oh, yeah. This is where you're supposed to start fighting. They take about eight minutes of audience questions and admitted they edit it down to about three minutes of supposedly the best questions. They also admitted that they used audience reaction shots in ways that were not genuine including including splicing audience shots from a completely different show cheese that shocking don't you think, Dan? Some of the techniques that they use on the Springer show. My my good friend. Mark guests who occasionally contributes out of context? Yeah. He was an intern on that show was never had a chance to talk to him too in depth the bottom, but I can imagine the stories. Yeah. How long was the internet? I think it was just like a summer gig. Yeah. I bet. He's got some great stories. I've got some great now, you know that. He's not doing that. He's not doing the Springer show anymore, and he's going to be judged, Jerry, right? Remember when there was an uproar over the fact that NBC was NBC right channel by channel five put him on air on majors. Caroline resigned over it. That's right. That was a big deal. Like he was like they brought him. They brought Springer into the Springer Negga commentary, the commentary editorial. Eight one five area codes Rickles comes out surprises, Sinatra on Carson hilarious. He those were the days, man. Carson very got Frank Sinatra all of a sudden just Rickles just shows up. See that's why the cars and the old Carson show was the best. Seven seven three area codes is how about the very first late night variety. Talk show Broadway. Open house hosted by Morey Amsterdam on NBC and nineteen fifty. I remembered I used to sneak out of bed and watch it led to the development of the tonight show. Yeah. I do not remember that Morey Amsterdam. I would think more Amsterdam would be would be a fun host. Good old Morey Amsterdam. Buddy on the Dick Van Dyke show. Seven or eight area code says, I'm great friends with the daughter of the potato chip lady from Carson, I've met her many times. And that's her favorite story to tell. Oh, that's cool. That's cool. When five area code says the Carson episode. With Dom deluise Burt Reynolds in the shaving cream Reynolds, leather pants or classic. It was it was actually whipped cream whipped cream that he came out with that whole thing got started because of Dom deluise. Because it down del Dom deluise. This whole thing started because Dom deluise did this. Did this trick with some eggs where he had eggs balanced on top of something. And he took a broom handle and flip. The broom handle hit the thing in the eggs were we're supposed to fall into six glasses award at six eggs, and they were supposed to fall into six classes water. He ended up like hitting Johnny with an egg. Then they started whipping eggs at each other. And it got completely out of control. They were throwing eggs at the ban. They were throwing eggs all over the place. And so they eventually both down deluise and Johnny Carson were were covered in egg because we've been whipping eggs at each other. And then that's when Burt Reynolds came out. So Burt Reynolds comes out got the seventies. Burt Reynolds like big time seventies, but Reynolds leather jacket Brown leather pants. Shiny Brown leather pants. He comes out. He's got a can of whipped cream, and then starts shooting the whipped cream at at Johnny. Johnny grabs whipped cream from him. A whip cream shoots it on on his leather pay on the crotch of his leather pants. And then Burt takes the whip cream and shoots it down Janis pants down in front of his pants and then stops. And then Carson goes, no, no keep going. Yeah. So that was that's a classic. Absolutely classic. But that whole thing started because it down deluise whole thing started because deluise did some stupid egg trick. And then it just completely went nuts as soon as as soon as you know. Bert got out there just when it just escalated very quickly. But it's hilarious. It's classic hilarious. Let's see. The recluse Johnny Carson surprises. Dave. And it turns out he wrote the monologue on the late show. This was in nineteen ninety four. So it's two years. It's two years after Johnny Carson. Retired. And when he retired. He re tired like he was not. I mean, he was he was he was out of the public eye. He was out of the public eye the two appearances that he made were he he he provided his voice to a classic episode of the Simpsons. So we did that and that appearance on Letterman show, and when he came out the crowd went nuts because this was a Letterman was on. It was also a statement that Johnny may because he appeared on Letterman show and not Leno because Leno took over the tonight show. And you know, when when Letterman didn't get tonight show, obviously, there was a is a huge blow, and it was the late night wars began, and then he went over to CBS, and when they gave Leno the tonight show, and so Johnny made a statement by showing up on Letterman show never made an appearance when when Leno took over the tonight show, but he did show up on the late show on CBS with Letterman didn't say a word. It was great because when he when he made his entrance the whole place went nuts. And as well they should because he hasn't been seen in two years. And he's the king of late night an absolute legend he shows up on stage. Just walks across the stage. The place goes nuts. Letterman gets up from behind the desk and leaves the desk empty and kind of gestures to Johnny to sit down behind the desk and take over so Johnny without saying a word. He walks over. He sits down the place goes nuts again because he's sitting behind the desk by the microphone Letterman is standing up clapping it off to the side. And then Johnny it looks like he's going to say something he doesn't shakes his head gets up walks off the stage shakes hands with with Letterman and walks off the stage. It was it was it was absolutely amazing. It was a legendary moment a really really legendary moment. And and again without saying a word he made a massive statement by showing up on a CBS show, David Letterman and not ever appearing on Leno show after Leno took over the tonight show that was one of my face. Favorite moments that was just a really memorable. But you could see you could see the joy in Letterman's is when Johnny comes out. And again, the whole crowd goes nuts standing ovation and ovation that lasts a few minutes. Didn't say a word did not say a word, and the the the effect was was was really really really amazing. So yeah, classic moment. All right, three one two nine eight one seven two hundred is the phone number. If you would like to join us. "Let me know, I waited and waited and waited and waited more and zero zilch. And I finally said, you know, something guys, screw you. I am going to do it myself, and I wrote a video series which ended up through the luck of one of these friends of mine who was an agent that creative CA Creative Artists Agency. And got me a guest spot on events indicated talk show called our magazine. And I did the segment I they want us to talk about the video series. I what did really wanna talk about video series because I felt it was kinda like an author when author writes a book, and they're on one of those morning shows when do they get to come back on when their next book, I wasn't planning on doing another video series? So I need to come up with some way that maybe I can do this and have it sort of a little more lasting. So I can get some good information out there. So I said, well who is the Gary Collins was the host of the co host that day some of you might chuckle if you remember him some of you probably don't even have never even heard of him. His name was Dom deluise and Dom deluise was a comedian. And he was huge. I mean, let's. For lack of a better term. We'll just say obese. But he used to joke about his weight all the time. I got how perfect is Don deluise is funny. And and his no no shame about this. Is that likes to talk about it? Why don't we talk about obesity says, you know, what why do segment on obesity, and it would be would really cool to to talk about that? Because it's number one the effecting pets. So I bring it on my very beautiful labrador. Gary Collins had a kind of I would say the lab was over obese. But he was certainly overweight, and we did a segment on obesity and with dog deluise. It was really funny at one point. I'm showing Gary how much food he should be feeding to his pet his lap. And Doug always looks at the bowl. It goes. That's all she gets to eat. That's what she's meeting. He goes with our. He just wanted to tell you know, he could stand not eating. But anyway, the segment went really, well and sure enough to produce. I wanted and says that was great. Would you like to do this again? I said. Sure enough, I became the resident vet on that show. And then that's kind of how my media's career snowballed, and I started from one show to another showdown after that. But the bottom line is, you know, there was not enough information. Now, we're getting more and more. And look even though I hate should say I am concerned about Dr Google because a lot of the information. You get out there is it's almost like there's news pieces were they take something. It's relatively simple at Mason station is it and make it sound like oh my God. And that's what happens in veterinary medicine. That's what happens in the news. So he you read about a a symptom which. By the end of the show, and you freak you absolutely frequent you they tell you all these things could be and those of the esoteric weird things that's not the norm, and you don't have to read. So anyway, it's good that we are. You know, have more houses we are learning and seeing their more shows on TV about pets and pet care. I think which is great. So anyway, I want to see that number up. I don't like fifty seven percent. I want one hundred percent of households having pets. So that's that's our goal. We have to make sure that you know, people start really really embracing their pets next up. Wintertime is coming. It's getting cold. The days are shorter. It's cold out there. And interestingly dogs, really kind of like something about the cold weather, and what it is is that we know their noses are amazing. They have forty count that forty times the nays receptors that we have we have about five million two hundred million. They can smell things they can smell it..

"Burt Reynolds was gonna play him, right? And I had to tell him. No. Marvin I you're being played by Dom deluise and not kindly not at all. And when in that movie, Marvin his wife Gertrude went to see the film. But in the pardon in the movie were Dom deluise. Stuff's a sock down in his pants Marvin got up marched out along with virtue. And don't forget Charles turning as the governor. Oh, yes. What am I favor? It. Rolls of his of all time. Yup. I love that. Absolutely. Love that was that good for the station. I mean, did you see the ratings go through the roof? I mean, there was national attention paid to this act. You know, the first action news in America. And there it was on your station. Well, yeah, it it. It got some notice. I mean, the character Marvin character was what Melvin P Thorpe watchdog news and. People started. I think it's originally. Was an article in Texas monthly magazine about the closing of the chicken ranch that led to the musical. And when it opened the play opened on Broadway in New York. Marvin was there. So was EDNA Milton the Madam and so was chair floor annoy they were all there for the play when the movie came out. I don't know what the others thought of it. But Marvin hated it. I hate that. Because I really enjoyed the movie I've seen that money. So I've seen the musical. And the stage portrayal is good. But I just felt like the interplay between Burt Reynolds, Dolly, Parton, Dom deluise Charles Dern, and that moment when when Dolly Parton sings hard candy Christmas, you kinda halfway want to keep the place open at that moment because they're gonna fall on hard. What else do they do? Boy. Oh boy. Yeah. So you miss Marvin. I do and and. Many other of the people I worked with their channel thirteen for so long with a minute Brandon. "Just laugh. Just laugh. That's how it's gonna work like, you just see this and you just laugh. It will dry it. He just standing there and his fat guy had he's. But his hand out. Thank you. During the taping of the show, like we'd be showing the same cat trapped in the laundry, hamper something that the stop and go back and do the joke and Dom deluise put his hand on. That's the way. Every time, and I was like, oh my God. This is show biz part. I should've, I should've. I should've done that in. So Jim was like big kind of Irish dude. And for comedian, he was particularly intense and serious, you know? And so he handed the Mike, did this whole thing where handed the Mike off as I gotta go, I got very pressing issues, but don't worry. This guy's super capable. Super funny. PanAm curl. He'll take good carrier for the second half of the show any like hand the mic me and he took off down the aisle and took off, and I just want a gym o'doherty our buddy, he's got a split early, his wife's pregnant and he's got find the ass wipe knocked her up, turned around the isle hustle back, put his hand on the Mike. He's like, look, this is this is a p g Joe might. My. Mike back. Redoing that those kind of jokes, and I was like, they laugh. They laughed and I'll never forget it. He goes, it was an uncomfortable laugh. They live because recoverable this argument in front of this bleachers people because he didn't want to leave and leave the mic nut balls because he told VIN DiPoto, don't worry. I know this guy super funny. He knows what to do. Ever this stupid argument of a crowd. He's putting his. Every moment. Put your hand over your heart. Jim, they laugh they, it's uncomfortable, they lack because uncomfortable. A regular comfortable screw be. They're looking at us. Now he's grabbing the back and forth. It was like so bad, and then he laughed all comedy. That was it. That was my last like I remember. I remember seeing him at the improv. He's like, took our improv class or something like the following Tuesday's, like GM. What do you think? Like no way, no way come on man. Like please let show is this for that was Dom deluise did what's Jim o. daugherty's what's his stuff. Well, he he's producer and writer best known for grounded for life and third rockets. But then as far as warm up, goes on happily, ever after suddenly, Susan and made with children. Wow. This is really interesting because when my dad would hear that shows are that was Dom deluise took over one of those VIN debone shows like with former Miss America back member and former Miss America. You get hosting. You could sell orange shoes or you could get a sidekick job somewhere like former Miss America, like you just show up data bride, former Miss America. Thank you for selling orange juice. So that meant something you'd have no idea you. Nobody could name me unless there in a sex scandal. Nobody could name me the last fifteen. Miss America names. Tell you Nuff back then when they would have former miss, whatever. And Dom deluise must've done like flubs and videos refund videos precursor. Nineteen ninety two or something, something like that. It was probably earlier felt like ninety ninety one. That's I'm trying to do the math because when my dad moved to when I was in high school and we went to show tapings all the time we came out here because that was very glamorous thing for us to do living in Kansas. And when we went to a married with children taping, we had the raunchiest warm up guy, and I was very young and I remember the warm up guy telling this joke, which I will never forget tall. He said, I mean, granite was married with children, but a live studio audience, all ages, genders races and everything in between. He said to the crowd, what did Cinderella say when she got to the ball. Jeez. Live studio audience, married with children. So maybe it was. It was not your guy because he would never have let that happen. Well, you know, to be feared. On the show, of course, done married with children for years, and there's probably pretty rockets Al crowd, this deluise in Universal Studios, and he'd decided this different group. Candid camera. Yeah. Was that like ninety two to ninety two? Yeah. So that's what I was doing and ninety two. All right..

"Welcome to movie crush. It's just another many crush Monday. Why can't it be the day. That we were going with that? No, you are the sugar in my coffee. Oh, man. Nice work. I didn't know if you had be hip to that. I had a cathartic experience last night and thank you for knowledge in my my hipsterdom may hip them. I saw the muppet movie for the first time in my live ridge movie, and it was like pure joy. It just made me feel. I've been whistling the rainbow connection all morning. Yeah, great movie, really good. I mean, imagine seeing it that whatever age I was like, nine. What year did that come out Seventy-nine actually. All right, eight. And it was just like it opened in and talk to this on the a believe the muppet or the Hinson episode of stuff you should know. But if you had only seen like Sesame Street and stuff like that, you had not seen the world opened up like this and then that very first bit with Kermit in the boat, like opens up with him in a row boat. Right? Is that Dom deluise who was the guy that plays the agent? I swear it looked like him, but I don't remember seeing name in the credits. I don't remember the goal tooth. He's got to come to Hollywood. There's an audition being held for frogs. I don't remember very well might have been because that was certainly the peak dumb deluise time. I met him once when I was a little kid, really? Yep. He was out at Stone Mountain park in. We saw him walking around and he was like a believe positive. He was the very first famous person I'd ever met in. He signed a an envelope porous and was really nice, and I always thought that was kinda cool. Yes, I did confirm that he is burning the agent, the guy in the rowboat in that again, it's been too long. It It was was cool cool. for me is I never seen it in all these cameos just pure surprises to me, and it's like Steve Martin plays the rude waiter at the lodge and took my kid, and we just, we, we laughed and laughed playing the theater will the midtown cinema, our local little kind of art house. Theater does a series every summer, and this one was movies about move making movies. And it was like stuff like eight and a half day for night, and then they toss them up movie in because it's totally a meta movie about making these thought about that. It's a really clever choice in the guy that a talk, and it was just great..

Actor Burt Reynolds, star of 'The Longest Yard' and 'Boogie Nights,' has died at the age of 82

"Matt thanks for joining me talking about the life of an icon in Hollywood actor Burt Reynolds died yesterday at the age of eighty two apparently it was a heart attack heart attack, cardiac arrest said Jupiter. Center down in Florida. And you know, I it was a sad day yesterday. But I gotta tell you what I got home. I said, whatever let's pop in cannonball run and have a laugh, and I just almost two hours straight. I laughed like I was thirteen years old again because that's the thing with Burt Reynolds for people like me of a certain age when we were kids, and we were watching cannonball, run smoking. Yeah. On on HBO at all hours and everything we wanted to be the bandit. We wanted to transam. We wanted to turn on the charm the whip that left wait a slap Dom deluise around whatever the man had presence. He was the definition of the movie star, and we're going to miss them. Absolutely. It's so funny. You say that my husband called me yesterday. And I said, hey, how are you? When he goes not so good. And I go why what's wrong, and he goes the bandits gone. And I said only God are you serious? And to the point. I see what you're talking about that we have on our Christmas tree transient. We have the car. My husband's from Georgia. We've actually stopped on roadways where he knows smokey and the bandit was filmed and taken a picture of Scott standing some random corner. But that's how important a lot of Burt Reynolds movies were to a lifetime of people. Right. And it's not just the passing of an individual. It's it's the passing of a certain era in film. I mean, how Needham films like smoke in the bandit, cannonball run that sort of thing again, th they they help to find a very very specific era of pop culture there. But when you go back and you look at birds body of work. I mean, even from his early stuff and gunsmoke, and then, of course, deliverance, I mean, he was an absolute bad ass in deliverance. Okay. And he could go from the dramatic to the comedy in a blink of an eye. And you know, what he was his own. Worst critic if you read his book from a couple years ago, it's called but enough about me. It's a really great memoir. He said that he didn't open himself to new writers or risky parts. I wasn't interested in challenging myself as an actor. I was. Interested in having a good time. And he certainly did. I mean, but years later, he said that you know, that probably didn't serve him. Well, and then when he makes a movie like boogie nights, and he gets nominated for for kademi award. He gets the Golden Globe. Or do you know that after he saw initially he fired his agent because he thought he was terrible in it. Meeting. You imagine that. I mean, that's the kind of the guy that he wasn't. He was his own worst critic. And then in later years, you know, in the nineties down in Jupiter. He opens the Burt Reynolds theater, he starts teaching masterclasses and acting and a friend of mine by name, Tracy Johnson. She's an upcoming actress she had a really great post on Instagram, and I just want to read this really quick a very sad day. The world has lost the best the best actor the best teacher, the best mentor, the best friend and the best human being. That's how we want to remember Burt

"Dom deluise always wanted to be. Journey. Somebody's got to Michelle Pollino reporting. Again after Burt Reynolds has died is manager just confirming. It was cardiac arrest he was eighty two another long day in the spotlight for supreme court nominee Brad Kavanagh answering a second round of questions from senators many raising the same issues over again. Fox's Jared Halpern is live at the Senate. If a challenge to President Trump's power to reach the supreme court, Rhode Island democrat, Sheldon Whitehouse wants to know of judge Brett Cavanaugh would recuse himself from considering a case against the president who nominated him. I don't believe it appropriate in this context to make decisions and recusals is a decision on a case. And so I don't think it's appropriate. Okay. Well, if it's not appropriate then let me move on with something else. Kevin also refused to give specific views on if a sitting president could be indicted, those sites existing Justice department guidance that he cannot Lisa. Thanks jared. "An air conditioner will work quite nicely but you may find also that an air conditioner doesn't lower the humidity level adequately and that you may need a whole house dehumidification unit i remember dom deluise had a water problem of from front planter had been over watered and deciding got wet and all of that and he was running five portable dehumidifiers throughout his home and running around the house changing these reservoirs and then finally we got with the folks at april air and they installed a whole house dehumidifier for him and boy what a difference that was so happy people who've never seen a large dehumidifier operate would would be amazed at saying you know a gallon of water collected every several hours simply being squeezed out of the air in the house right it's quite amazing quite an and the water the water looks pretty drinkable yeah so so someone might say well what's the difference between an air conditioner and a dehumidifier and that is how they handle both heat runoff yeah the air conditioner continues to generate cool air the dehumidifier makes certain that the air temperature doesn't change if the air is warm then the dehumidifier brings it back to the same warmth hair conditioner continues to condition the air and cooler and cooler and cooler while getting rid of the water so that's the basic difference in how temperature is affect right and air guys i'm stated earlier conditioners grain moisture outside using a condensate line where dehumidifiers drain moisture into a reservoir but a whole house can drain into a condensate air conditioner an air conditioner takes the moist air and passes it to the outside that's correct and the same is true with the dehumidifier i understand that passes it to the outside gas so should you use an air conditioner and dehumidifier well while it may seem like they serve the same function dehumidifiers are distinct from air conditioners for one key reason since they're smaller and less costly to operate you can run them all day an air conditioner only pulls humidity out of the air wallets cycled on and while you could set the thermostat on instead of auto to have it collecting all day you'd certainly be in for a surprise when you've got your utility bill unless you live in the great northwest where trinity dirt cheap or in palm desert where it also is dirt cheap so if you're feeling a little sticky maybe there's a dehumidifier in your future and if you'd like.
