"dom capers" Discussed on Behind the Steel Curtain

"An older guy, maybe twenty eight twenty nine I guy that is played some snaps at a guide that has played in a scheme. Addict LeBow coat scheme. Dom Capers type scheme, somebody that has played a lot of snaps maybe in a part time starter or backup role in dime or initial because other than that you might be at harm's way, because another thing that they could do is, they could try to, you know, maybe flex Mark Barron into a backup safety in the dime, or maybe even a nickel or maybe even a dollar if one of those guys struggles starting safeties or those guys get hurt. Maybe he's the guy that can play a no sub packages, but they brought him into be, you know, more of an inside linebacker, potentially the starter. So hopefully Devin Bush, maybe beat him out and he is that backup flex safety, but Barron, probably can't play free safety. He's more of in the box strong safety guy, particularly if you want him to play inside linebacker. So when you look at the safety position Steelers, have a significant issue there, and they're going to have to address it because if they get some injuries or either one of those safeties gets hurt they're going to be in a world of hurt and trouble. And it's something that they have to address. And I hope they address soon because I like the way the rest of his defense, looks, but I think the safety position is probably the weakest position on the Pittsburgh Steelers team going into twenty nineteen with that we're going to conclude the program, and as always tune in Tele friend and subscribe..

"Right now into Denver territory down by seven Philip rivers water day, he had leading the chargers over the cardinals forty five ten twenty eight of twenty nine two hundred fifty nine yards and three touchdowns and sat for most of the fourth quarter. Tom Brady passing Peyton Manning for passing yards. There's the patriots roll over the jets one more time and have they commanding lead in the AFC east. A big win today on the road for the Seahawks. A late Sebastian Janikowski field goal. Lifts them over the Panthers. Thirty to twenty seven another game winner from Jake Elliott. The eagles top the giants twenty five to twenty two the Browns with the big first half beat the Bengals thirty five twenty. Andy Dalton hurt his thumb and did not finish the game. The ravens topped the raiders thirty four seventeen bills. Hold off the Jaguars twenty four twenty one and the buccaneers defeat the forty Niners twenty seven to nine. We have two games going on right now as I mentioned, so let's get you the updates on both starting in Denver with Bruce. Morton, bruce. All right. We've got seven nineteen to go in the fourth quarter and the Broncos again up by seven leading twenty four seventeen for the second time this half. Denver scored off a Steeler turnover. Chris Harris interception. Led to case. Keenum throwing four yards to Emmanuel Sanders that tied the game at seventeen that Darian Stewart fumble recovery be had a seventy nine yard drive culminated with Philip Lindsay's two yard TD run with nine seventeen to go. If Pittsburgh loses this game. The Steelers fans can wind about points left on the field, namely forced fumbles at the Denver goal line. And at the Bronco Twenty-one plus a blocked field goal after a Pittsburgh putt. The Broncos are getting ready to put the ball into play from their sixteen. First and ten seven ten to go on this one the Broncos trying to bust up. Pittsburgh six game win streak. Denver lead twenty four seventeen. Thank you very much, Bruce. And let's head to George Montgomery in Indianapolis where the colts have just tied things up. Here's George things like everybody. Scoring touchdowns. And in batches today. Andrew luck is just throwing his third touchdown pass today. And for the second time was tied in America. Iran, his favorite target. It seems like in in that drive. The colts went seven plays eighty nine yards in three minutes and eighteen seconds. The big plan to drive a thirty four yard excuse me at thirty six yard past a T Y Hilton that got the ball down to the Miami thirty five lot got it in. Tied at twenty four with four twenty five to play the colts got a field goal on that possession before that as they went ten plays forty seven yards and five minutes and ten seconds without have been a terrier who'd just one earlier, forty eight kicked one from forty six yards that brought the colts within seven and then the ones that Andrew luck to Eric Yvonne tied the score once again four twenty five to play here. It's Indianapolis twenty four Miami twenty five thank you very much George Montgomery in Indianapolis this afternoon. And as a matter of fact with lock hooking up with the touchdown pass it he just threw his eighth consecutive game with at least three touchdown passes. Peyton Manning ads in Indianapolis called also had eight consecutive games with three or more touchdown passes. All time leader would be that Brady guy up in New England. Not back in two thousand seven when ten games at the through fifty plus touchdown passes. With at least three touchdown passes. So Andrew luck ties Peyton Manning for second all time in consecutive games with at least three or more. And by the way, you'll get a chance to go for number nine next week. Absolutely. And right now joining us to preview tomorrow night's game which takes on a much different. Meaning and as those this interview as well as John MacLean of the Houston chronicle, John rich Ackerman Jody McDonald, how are you? I'm doing well guys. How are you? Thanks for having me. Absolutely. Thank you. We always have appreciate you being on. Obviously, this is as I mentioned takes on a much different meaning tomorrow night. This game will be played with heavy hearts in the city of Houston as somebody who covered the Oilers and then saw the Oilers leave and then the return of football or the NFL to Houston where does Bob McNair rank in the pantheon of Houston sports. He brought the NFL back to us to nobody else stepped up to do it. But Bob McNair, and he had wanted on the team for years he had met Paul Tagliabue in the early nineties at the astrodome. And but Adam sweet where Bob and his wife would sit with and his friends for oil gangs McNair a season ticket holder for the Oilers for decades. Hey, lead Tagliabue. No, he down a team the NFL dead at him and liked him. And thought he would be good. And they ask him several about several teams are coming on the market, but he didn't want to leave Houston. He didn't want to be an absentee owner. And then when the Oilers it started negotiating a new lease in nineteen ninety four and everyone turn their back on them. And then we thought they were gonna leave ninety five McNair stepped up to let everybody know if indeed they did leave he would like to get a franchise here and throughout member the NFL and exclusive negotiating period with LA NFL wanted to go, Los Angeles. But they didn't have an owner that they could settle on in that stadium site. Didn't have the financing. They didn't have any their ducks in a row and McNair had everything here at the seven hundred million seen stadium. That they were ready to build plus all the political and business clout behind him for the city and the county, and he was confident the whole time that Houston's bid would win out the NFL even ask him if he was interested in owning in LA franchise and politely declined because he wanted it in his hometown. When you have an NFL owner, they have different relationships with their play different teams different relationships, and like some to be hands on be a locker room all the time. So I wanted to move the players and others like a removed relationship that they don't want to be hands on with the players. That's why they Heidi the executives and coaches that they do. So that they don't have to do something like that what was McNair relationship specifically with the players of this team. Does it have on tonight's game? When he hired Charlie casualties is first general manager, Rick Smith is a second one. And then this past January. Brian gain is third GM. He would hire people pay good money, and let them do their jobs. He would go to practice night. Didn't do it much this year because he's battling cancer over a five year period and was in and out of the hospital, but he would go to practice. He would talk to the coach and the GM during the week. He wanted to know what was. Going on. But he didn't end up here. And they liked that they liked way working point. Plus, he's very patient Dom Capers Gary kubiak and Bill O'Brien now since two thousand and two so they liked working for him for the players. He would talk to them after practice. He would go down on the sideline before the game before he would go up to a suite with his son Cal right hand, man. Who's been running the team will now his mother will be Janice will be the controlling owner. But cow run the franchise, and then McNair was close to the players. I'll tell you guys a story that. I've told this week, and I've told it here and written the week before the NFL owners meeting in which McNair was quoted anonymously saying we can't let then makes run the prison before he went up there. I was talking to him about that meeting. And I usually talk to a lot off the record about league meetings. What he off to get out of it, and what came of it and as long as that, I wouldn't put him on it. He would talk to me about it. And he told me he was really upset that there was a lot of quotes coming out of the league office about NFL policy and the people at the league office needs to understand that the owners own the league, and that he had a speech plan for them to tell them. How upset he was that the league was stepping was like setting the policy instead of the owners. And so I didn't think anything else about it. And then when it came out what he said, he always contended afterward that he was talking about the league and not the players, but nobody believed him, but no one, and I wasn't there. Of course. So I don't know. But knowing what he told me the fact I never caught him in a line. I knew in twenty one years, I believe Dogwood John MacLean of the Houston. Article. And unfortunately, that's a big part of what people remember because it happened. So recently, again, it'd probably came out of context, and it was a very it's a very sensitive time here. So people tend to overreact as well. And I could understand both sides of the coin on that one. But you know, for a guy who is a professional sports owner, obviously people always think of him as a guy who's always had it easy. But that was not the case for Bob McNair. He he he said he was an overnight sensation that I think I can't remember the exact quote, but it took them twenty years to get there. You know, what what kind of person was? He was he a guy that always always kept the little people close at heart. So to speak, we figured that. He and his wife Janice giving away more than five hundred million dollars to a lot of causes in Houston and medicine into charities for people to and in his home state where he grew up in North Carolina. Born at Tampa went to school at South Carolina. And he told me one time what's the point of having money. If you can't give it to those who need it. And that's something he always did people here. Understood understood that but when he came here two years after graduating from South Carolina, Janice was pregnant, dad, baby. When they got here. They didn't have enough money for a crib and the baby who's the oldest daughter roads had to sleep in the drawer to like get afford a crib, and he had seven hundred dollars. When he started a auto. Rental business and he lost businesses went bankrupt. And he got in the telecommunications business as he told me way too early if he'd only know man what he knows new now, but it wasn't until eighty two when he founded coaching technologies, which became the largest independent power producer in the northeast. Then he got wealthy and he sold that company in ninety nine right before he was warded the franchise for one for one and a half billion to Enron got a billion cash five hundred thousand stock then sold, and that's how money he used going towards the franchise, and Bob McNair was a very kind generous genuine man, I've never known a more tenuous billionaire. I've never known anybody. I respected more and I've been covering NFL for forty years, and I never caught him in a lie at any point in my dealings with him. Never heard him say thank bad about anybody. Never heard him curse was. A Republican through and through. He was a democrat when he came to Houston, and he met George H W Bush in sixty four on their friendship convinced him to be a Republican, and they were best friends right up until the end. And and and he was very religious didn't hit people over the head with it. But if you ask him something about the bible, he could he could eight recited verbatim. And it's tremendous laws for the Texans for Houston for the NFL with all that you you just said though, talked about Bob McNair as a person how disappointing that so.

"So what did they do for three years while he waited? Built him his whole delivery was different. And I think Mike McCarthy doesn't get any credit for that. So if he goes to New England, I don't know Charlie weis is he going to rebuild his delivery. I don't know maybe could have. But a lot got done under Mike McCarthy. Thanks, and I don't want people to think that that might McCarthy. Mike McCarthy is a good coat. He's not great. And he's dam. Sure is Bill. There were years when Mike McCarthy was seen as the best play caller and pro-football, I'm seri-. Now, he's not because Aaron starts to point fingers. We didn't call the right play. We should know. No matter what hot defensive coordinator Dom Capers via Bob Sutton, b Rex Ryan when it comes to defense in mind, that's always going to that guy. It used to. But over the last three years not so much thinking in thirty seven games. Tom Brady have been to the playoffs. The defense that Tom Brady plays behind has given a average of two point nine points per fourth quarter, let this sink into your mind. Do you realize that Tom Brady in his playoff career has eleven game winning drives to only two for Aaron Rodgers think about this in all five of his Super Bowl victories. He had the game winning drive in the fourth quarter over time. That's impossibly great. This is the greatest clutch performer in the history of sport. You realize how that save bell? Check. I'm gonna do it like this and elephant you'll close you can close Tom Brady last year through how many are those who both five oh five five and they had six hundred and thirty four total yards..

"Time series ninety eight to seventy with seven ties quarterback Matthew Stafford started his career Owen six against the Packers. But in the last nine meetings has gone five and four against his division rival including a sweep of Green Bay last season. However today's game will Mark a first for number nine live at a new defensive coordinator this year. So for the first nine years of my career was Dom Capers. And I don't say it was easier. But I was more familiar with what they were all about obviously knew a defensive coordinator this year. So I've got quite a bit of learning to do on these guys do I know a few of their players, maybe better than some non traditional opponents. Yes. But they've got plenty of new guys around to to get to know and get to learn this'll be the first time Stafford and the lions will face Mike Patton as the new defensive coordinator. The packers. The revamped Packers dis ranked sixth in yards allowed eleventh in points allowed and thirteen sacks. So far this season and lion's head coach Matt Patricia expecting Green Bay to dial up some pressure. Definitely some blitz from the nickel. There's double pressure from both edges based on formation overload pressures. There's linebacker pressures. There's pressures that didn't drop into max coverage. So you see a lot of guys lunch scrimmage, and those guys will pop out. So it's just that kind of continually moving fronts and different ways that they attacked the offense. But enough about the defense when it comes to stopping the Packers. It starts and ends with quarterback. Aaron Rodgers all pro cornerback. Darius lay knows aligns defense will be challenged very poised very confident and throws the matter where that you just feel like.

"Yeah, I, I think to me like I think that the happiest people in the world are like Mike Zimmer's probably happy tonight because he can go in there on Monday and he's got his team's full attention. I think Tomlin has happier in hell going in there this week and having everybody's attention after getting his ass kicked at home. Sometimes we look at it on the outside as dysfunction on the inside when it's really the chance for the coach to be able to rally the forces like buffalo, we all thought buffalo me included like who gave buffalo one chance in hell to win the game right. Viking. So. It's so like, look, it gave, you know, Sean, McDermott got a chance to go in there. I mean, look, Tennessee played, the Tennessee played the car. They, they were like, hey, we're, you know, we're, we're, we got no chance to go in Jacksonville. We can't win the gives your coach chance to talk to the team. And I mean, look, the eagles eagles can get pissed off at me all they want for for for for ripping on Doug Peterson. But I mean, they played that car the whole time, like nobody respects us and they did the whole year at that. That's a hell of a card to play when you can do it. Did you get a ring to this? Anyone didn't get one of the owners gift to rings out if you guys know this, right? So they always kinda give to rings. They give one that's the the real ring that has real diamonds in it and then get one that doesn't have all the real diamonds in it. I was at least expecting one without the real diamonds Putin. Right. Exactly. Is Mike McCarthy on the hot seat is Aaron Rodgers more than he's putting on. I thought this was a tough game this week. I mean, looks Washington's the ultimate play play to the to the competition crowd. It was a soggy field. I think I think Green Bay's defense is terrible. I think that they've been bad for three weeks and they haven't really been able to slow anybody down. You realize they gave up twenty two points in the fourth quarter last week in two minutes and fifty seconds. I mean, that's hard to do really hard to do. And so you know, I think Mike's gonna fix his defense. You know, he got Dom Capers out there now, Mike Patton's in there. I think they got to fix it. And right now I think time on Gummer's the best back they have because when they spread you out, he at least can create an explosive play the Packers. They, they've never had a good defense like Dom Capers been there for forever and it seems like they haven't been able to stuff into they haven't. No, that's how'd you? How'd you fix that? Because he got guy right now clay Matthews. He's got a reputation of these working on. He's a player. I tweeted out that l. river on should put a video together to show all of us. What do you wanna clay Matthews to do? Like where was he gonna put his body like, really like, where are you gonna put your body like is there any chance you could have moved it left or. Right. I mean, you're you tackle the guy. What do you want me to do? Just like all of a sudden reverse tackle them, fall backwards to do a somersault, justify the laws of physics. It's not that tough to do, but I think Green Bay look, green base got to fix their defense. And what happens all the time it happens in New Orleans is is you play this battleship game. You just try. You call different defenses for different plays. Sometimes you hit sometimes you miss and Green Bay's in that battleship mode and they're not hitting. Yeah. So the, oh, go ahead..

"Three four how is it different from what dom capers ran i i know you said in the past andy it's going to be similar but but what would the differences be and i i believe joe came added here what is clay matthews role in this defense and how about nick perry yeah it's a good question i don't think it will be different from capers people imagine it's they're both very so they believe in give let's have some one on one corner is outside and let's do some blitzer and let's blitz them inside the shortest route to the qb the most disruptive in the quarterbacks line of vision in some ways the hardest for an offensive line to sort out because there's more feel that they have to read with inside blitzes that's the core of the philosophy now capers and penton the way they go about getting to the inside blitzes are a little different patentable use his defensive backs a little more although i'm going to have to take that back here because dom capers played with db's on the field more than anyone in the nfl the last few years they played nickel against heavy personnel even charles woodson was a linebacker and then when you moved on they they found other charles morgan burnett became a linebacker times last year other guys have done it so they're very similar which is what i think is so here's what's interesting about it the packers in the last three drafts dow have taken cornerbacks very high in the draft in two of them they've gone corners in rounds one and two this one ended twenty fifteen they've had two different defensive coordinators during this time and they've had two different general managers the one common factor they've had among all these drafts is the same head coach mike mccarthy what i believe is mccarthy thinks offense as an offensive guy i don't wanna see.

"Of years so the announcement at no surprise that the defensive coordinator dom capers fired the defense has been a disaster for several years i think one of the questions it always been was it capers or was it the personnel you know was he just not getting the type of players he needed to play well they gave capers a couple of chances finally he's gone they'll be a new defence installed in green bay but then the other question is what about the guy who's responsible for providing the players that of course is ted thompson and the truth is ted thompson has had has had some hits amine heat look given credit he's the guy that you know grant of the cited to draft aaron rogers in the first round years and years ago had a big hit on that he had a couple of big hits in the draft but in general for a guy who's philosophy is build a team around draft picks his draft picks have been underwhelming in the extreme and the truth of the matter is if it were not for having of quarterback like aaron rodgers i i don't know that this packers team would have been in the playoffs year after year after year and i think a lot of us who are fans look at this and say have we squandered opportunities been have we wasted you know the best years of a quarterbacks career so in any event today whether his hand was forced were not news reports out there suggesting that they be that the case of mark murphy whose present the packers he has will leave ted thompson of his duties as general manager ted thompson is going to be reassigned to some other position in new organization and there will be a new general manager that has brought would be brought in right this is big story number one four one four seven nine nine one six twenty that is the accunet mortgage talk and text lied i always hate to see with a possible exceptions of some.

"House cleaning but they moved a lot of pieces and are that included bob sanders who was the defensive coordinator at the time dom capers was hired is never lasted longer than any city that he hasn't green bay but ultimate you look at some of the deep numbers year wanting to the packers defense and they're very disappointed do you think we learned a lot about the team in its weaknesses in its strength went you take out there the best player in the team and then you can see however when sets i think it it'd be a valuable that way where we kind of saw where everyone fits rights of deny opener is light i mean you can have that debate last year when they were rodgers will playing saying or this team would just go nowhere without aaron rodgers well yes but he's also the best player arguably in the league in the best quarterback in the league that stuff to replace of any level but there was really not one thing you can lean on here for the packers and say yes eve without aaron rodgers you can you can lean on this group you couldn't do that the packers were barely better than last place teams in the nfl lyon certainly that the first time that they had in the nineties when they won at super bowl without reggie white's and brett far our defense was rock solid i mean isn't that largely you can't went you can't win the super bowl if you don't have good strongly the packers have never won a super bowl without a topfive defense right in the they just haven't been in the top five since our last uber bowl they've never been better than eleven since that super bowl on more often than not there wanting up somewhere on the 20s let's talk about had thompson acting recent photos of ham he i don't now there's just a do you think he's going to be staying there do you think he silk can run the packers office i think you've ted thompson chooses to step down nerves one thing i don't think he'll be fired i i just think that relationship between he and mark murphy.

"Ted thompson dom capers defensive personnel it's really below league average and when you look at the teams that they have in their division specifically the minnesota vikings young built their their team there organizations refix bars they are they flown right past them now think about this minnesota's on her third quarter minnesota would have landed carson went that divisions over for seven years it's over prior to the team seattle plays this week the cowboys who just got ezekiel elliott back from a sixgame suspension dallas was able to stay in the hunt would zeke gone and now have their best player back in time for a playoff was jason garrett talked about having zeke back today looks like he's in good shape seems metal into it engaged and just fell right back you know this teammate in meetings walk ruin to there'll be is first time practice and with the team we anticipate him just gone through normal practice and seemed like he he went through that process the right way and again all that stuff behind us focused on today having a good practice with him in the rest of our team are we gotta be tied here but do you expect a more mature zeke elliott moving forward no i mean i think you're dna asia dna your personality your personality he went is in shape he's ready to go but i don't think like immature kids become mature from eighteen in eighteen or nineteen to twenty he's super talented guy i think dax mer.

"I wanna i wanna stay specifically in the now in this conversation i it's it's not something i want to go back in history i wanna i wanna talk about the now because there is nobody there is no sports figure in the state of wisconsin who has more universally disliked then packers defensive coordinator dom capers nobody nobody burns you you agree with that is he the most hated sports individual across the board in the state of wisconsin can you think of anybody more no no i gave it there's people who are polarizing a good baseball there are people who hate ryan braun but there's people who love ryan braun uh who who else do people really not like in the there's people now because of the social style off in the i don't eat cheese stuff there is actually people now really dislike aaron rodgers like ms football player but really dislike him but obviously most people love aaron rogers ever think of other people who are disliked bread farf at one point in time sure but but still not universe there were still you'll logical people realized what he he had done for the organization so uh to me they in turn to maybe some old brewers managers have been really disliked tearing their time trying to think of other coaches it's just it's not good so here's my thing with dom capers i am i don't know if he's a good defensive coordinator i don't know if he's a bad defensive coordinator because when i go right in the moment i look at i look at the packers defensively forget defense line forget linebacker let's just look at the secondary you got guys who you could make the argument that the best quarterback on the team as kevin king who is who is a rookie an wasn't even like a wasn't you know he's now a topfive draft pick coming out of top five selections now round and who's the first round pick but he he wasn't like these one of these guys walked out of college you said this guy's going to be a pro bowler from day one it's just not a very good secondary as an added in the fact that they've been completely injured and completely banged up i so i said to you the maybe it was i said to somebody i was a uber enzi i sent somebody earlier if you're a five star chef and then you walk into a restaurant in.

"Oh her i mean we got moving on here we go this run from neil ricard i'm sorry if i get the names wrong looks like he's drinking tasty beverage rock in ricard if the packers fell again in the play offs or fall short of them will we finally see the end of teflon dumb on its defensive coordinator dom capers mike mccarthy and door gm ted thompson mark well fall short could create changes i don't think you get rid of mike mccarthy think dom capers is a candidate to retire after the season and ted thompson you know he got a voice serve confidence from from ownership this offseason but they've got some talented younger guys in the front office that they could that they could raise up so why my continuing to ida onscreen well was assessing i'm going to say no i think if you're green bay they've they're not a an organization that kind of throws throws things in the blender very often so you even one more shot he's teflon dom for reason he's going nowhere ever mike mccarthy well loved that building it seems like an taxes are going anywhere in fact i would think fell in the playoffs also that could be losing in the super bowl it but i'm assuming it means and other divisional loss or maybe the get to the conference title game whatever but to answer the question nobody's going anywhere especially not teflon laundau.
