Steam has officially come to China

"There is something called. Steam china that has been in development for many years is coming out soon ish to read. What the message says for people that are currently i believe in china. They're just using regular steam. It says let me just zoom in here. Starting next week you'll need to play via the new steam china platform. you'll have the same efficient matchmaking. And fast paying to local servers plus access to a growing collection of great games on steam china when steam china is officially live will provide you an endgame link to download the new steam client when you launch seem china like just say seem china over and over us just like subliminal messaging here. You'll use your dotage to game account not your perfect world passport. That's weird by the way to log in and we'll help. You migrate your account and transfer your game progress. So from what i was reading and i'm not getting into the whole censorship thing because i don't know enough about it to really give comment because china has its own planet basically but from what. I'm reading the biggest reason that they're doing. This is so that valve can cater like the steam store to china specifically as oppose to everybody kind of sharing an international. Which how is that a thing. Can't you just do regional like based on what region you're in these games pop up or something like that honestly might just some sort of work around that had to do because of of the law right. Maybe i think so. Valve have wanted to launch steam china for many years right and they've always from what i understand they've been running into this wall where legislation just shuts them down. Because of the like. You said there's like games that china doesn't want people to have access to that. Could be like gory or bloody or with seems that are considered illegal in video games there that's also why doda looks different in china. There's heroes that look different. Like lifestyle looks different. Pudge looks different etcetera etcetera skeleton king. What did they what china get when we got that immortal. That's a great question. I think it's got look different on chinese climate. I don't think i've seen that one. But anyway i'm guessing because of legislation that it might have been easier to pass and get through that by making a separate client that is government approved rather than having an international client where you need to specifically green light every game like maybe legal needs. There's a difference in the end like you said the outcome could be the same right.

Group Nine's Geoff Schiller on his selling strategy

"And wanted to ask to obviously because as you mentioned twenty twenty was a a really wild year to be in your i kind of year since the acquisition in the merger and implementing some of these strategies around your sales I guess can you talk about how ad business was impacted at the same time. I know you guys have launched some pretty unique Sponsorship initiatives around some content packages in ip and things of that nature. But everyone was you know across the board impacted a certain degree when it comes to add Spending so i guess talk a little about like you know. Twenty twenty how that was for group nine. Yeah absolutely Certainly the pandemic threw a curveball. To all as you mentioned from our perspective corporately when we go to market we talk about how group nine has the most optimistic fast moving deeply connected brands that matter now and certainly you can say. Oh that's pithy and that you know that's corporate speak but it really played out in what was wildest of years in a lot of ways. The most tragic of years the convergence of social unrest civil unrest political unrest with the pandemic a once in a generation Experience in so. I think from that perspective. Everything that i mentioned in terms of what defines group nine On a molecular level across the company played in our favor we were able to move really quickly In terms of pivoting for example we launched within weeks following the pandemic. we launched as we've talked about before. Now this had a new franchise Launch call now in this together which was really about spotlighting heroes and And and the helpers in communities during the pandemic and and so that actually happened within two weeks of the pandemic and we have literally sold every episode of that Since july so i would say the thing that we shared in common with the industry was everybody took their licks in acute to that was certainly when on march thirteenth on lockdown. Everything sort of scrambled and the the the prime beneficiary in a negative way was was cute. Too but q. Three we were really able to pick up not just in this together. We launched new. Ip across a variety of brands. But i would say twenty. Twenty was unimaginable year But our brands really focused on finding new and innovative ways to connect with people and i would say adding to that at the same time. Not only was it about all the things that i mentioned but our audience growth was just tremendous until some of that is the acceleration of the shift from in office to at home the shift from digital from linear to digital. But it's also just by nature of who our brands are who they represented. We went from doing around five billion monthly views the beginning of the year to ending around seven billion We saw our tiktok. Audience grow significantly We have now Up to reach over twenty five million viewers across snapped as of q four and so we see tremendous audience growth throughout twenty twenty and the sort of code on that was from nancy sales perspective. Q four mark the strong secure four. We've ever had on record. So i guess like an do wanna ask a little bit more about q. Four as it is the strongest as you mentioned on record but also you know. You're you're for your ad business in particular Was that didn't end up being in revenue for you guys. Yeah so we had a pretty big hit in q two We saw incremental growth. So i kind of look at it as a first-half second-half second half was Was a much different picture. We finished second half up year-over-year We were still for the full year. Closer to flat Just based off of the hit we took in particular based off of our exposure in certain categories like travel through so dependent on travel in that went away and certainly retail. Took a big hit as well but The tale of two halves where q one was kind of like the integration settling and then q two was the double hit of co vid. It was vastly different second half with incremental growth in q three and then q four being the strongest. We've ever had for the company. I think it's also slightly common I've talked to a few publishers. Say that like q four ended up being a very strong. I'm quarter for them. Which is probably their saving grace and a lot of cases But i'm curious so you mentioned that you're doing this very like endemic focus on some of these brands and really wanted to be the authority in as you mentioned the dodo pet care Thrillers travel things of that nature I guess coming out of twenty twenty though. Do you think that that is something that could potentially be. I don't wanna say like mental. But it could to a degree Impact business again like travel ended up being You know put on ice for another year or so You thinking about these. Like endemic focuses While also making sure that your ad business is staying on a growth trajectory. The it's a great question. And i think the example i would give is the dodo Specifically because it's so endemic right. You can say list travel but trout. It's also experienced It's an experience brand food. Drink travel Whereas the more sort of apples to apples is the dodo is a modern family brand. That owns the the the pet space and so the way that we saw the need to find those travel dollars from somewhere else or the retailers for somewhere else came through our strategy of saying we already own endemic on the dodo for pets. How do we own the non endemic of modern family and so we were able to drive new relationships so i guess like a sort of a long winded answer of saying anytime. You're you're backed into a corner. You tend to if you have sort of like the fast twitch muscle fiber thinking. You're able to find new pathways really fast. Some organizations are able to do that others. Just sort of flail. I as i mentioned earlier we move fast ethos but also an operating guideline and so from our perspective with the dodo. We were able to then. Hey look the doda was truly on. Its way to being in the same category as disney neck. Modern family brand family save brand safe also safe on social which became an issue and so we were able to open the aperture of client partners on the dodo and get brands like craft. Get brands like close. Get target So our strategy is certainly to leverage the power of the portfolio. And if we if we were one brand we would definitely be stuck about. Because we're five. We have that power of the portfolio opportunity to then say. How do we have a relationship ear that can be leveraged over there. Or how do we open the aperture from one category to the next the the g growth on the dodo is definitely emblematic of that. So you mentioned retail and travel as being to those categories that Obviously were down but What were some of the ones that ended up being up this past year a former was up and this is more over the counter not not to direct to consumer specifically Cpg was way up Beauty was was slightly. Up tech was pretty significantly as telecom as well and then financial services. So i think really. We saw pretty significant growth across the board with the exception of retail The exception of travel and then I would say media and entertainment is kind of like a toss up because the the theatrical obviously went away broadcast was muted because of covid production delays and then the streaming wars. We benefited to some extent. But they didn't really heat up until the second half of the year so it wasn't like there was enough room in cute to again to kind of blunt the losses with with streaming but streaming has come on pretty strong in Q four now into q. One and i certainly expect it will be It'll be a growth category for us. This year

Is chess an Esport?

"On this. Podcast we've said chess is definitely any sport it's so cool to see you know Gm ichuro streaming for tsm and playing chess and chess was invented. Today would definitely be any sport. you know. we've we've sort of back that narrative collectively. And then i saw this article and i'm like wait a second. Something's not right like this doesn't feel right to me as much as i believed streaming of chest feels like a little bit of any sport is magnus carlsen is he. The top e sports earner is this really as good for the sports industry as a whole to sort of make this kind of call Or are we sort of now trying to include too much in the definition and we only hurt ourselves like. Where are you guys on that on that on. That thought lindsey. I'll let you start okay. I talked about this on twitter a little bit earlier. I think it's great. So one of the things about these lists especially. I was looking at the top ten team earnings to i mean the amount of potential earnings that are out there are just around fifteen to twenty percent of what they were last year. Because of the pandemic so part of it is that chest was super easily translatable in a pandemic near still able to hold tournaments. It's still very familiar. People still wanted to watch it whereas some other tournaments games. Whatever with the line element. It's not as exciting. So we'll see his carries over into next year that would be an interesting trend but the other part is that. I still don't think it's necessarily a bad thing for this is a little bit. I mean this is where it gets a little bit to differentiate between these sports gaming and top earning streamers as top running eastwards competitive on and the the delineation between all of those is really murky unclear. Obviously he's not the most popular Twit streamer and i wouldn't expect him to have the most money made off of that or most money made off of endorsements or whatever. So when i look at it from that lens. I don't think it's a bad thing that he's leading in this. Very narrow niche category called e sports. Where we're only looking at tournament winnings that have been decimated during a pandemic so but like even non pandemic like even. If you go back he probably still would have made the top ten and half a million dollars. You're weirdo doda to the winning team. Each guy makes you know couple of million bucks. He still would be up there. And i think the bigger question is you know everyone seems gung ho to call chesini sport right but then you see a list. At least i saw list like this. And i go wait. A second at maybe. Have we gone too fast. Here right like manx. Carlson to me has never been an east sports competitor right and so it started trending downwards though if people kind of us chess has an introductory way of getting into it because it is familiar international and then got for like league of legends. Like watching chess. Yeah i i. I very much think that that kind of strategy play that people get into is easily transferable to other games and that it could be a way of just doing that choices. I mean just. Chess has the advantage of longevity. It's been around for thousands of ears. So i don't think it's a bad thing right now. Maybe in ten years. I would think that this would be a bad trend. Maybe even five years but for right now this year it's point even stronger. I feel like we're using chess at this more rate like being used in the dirty version of the word right like we're using it for sorta like clout right because it's cool to have chess as an e sport and chest is massively popular internationally right and then as soon as as soon as you have. Magnus carlsen at the top of the list. Everyone goes oh. No no not any sport like i feel like we're using it a little bit and chris brings up a good point here. Jeff maybe you want to comment on like when do we call poker any sport. Yeah that's a good point. You got a slippery slope at some point. Can you call you know anything. That's being played electric. You know it's just this other point at some point. Can you just call anything you play like you know like if we're flipping a coin and betting on the outcome is that an e sport if it's filmed than like you're in one place at other place i don't know

Epic League Division 1 Recap

"The epic league has concluded division. One is what we'll talk about because we cast a bunch of those by the way for those that. Don't watch it first of all. Thank you everybody that gave us the support and all that good stuff as usual. We appreciate it. Cinder hates it. But you know i appreciate every series we cast except one was either two or three. Oh that is incredible like every single one we had it was i believe. So what was it actually. So that's the other thing is almost every almost every game even to one were stopped for the most part like none of them were even guess which was unfortunate. We cast a lot of biking and like the last two days. It just felt like either. They were not playing particularly well or vp. An og were just so much better like on a different level completely but to wrap it up Viking after getting off to a really good start in the group stage with vp ended up losing to them in the upper bracket finals so they dropped the lower bracket where og kind of swept pre on not swept but cleaned house from the lower bracket round one all the way to the lower bracket files with a viking which we cast and then played against vp so vp. Went to all five games. And i got to watch. Game is really exciting. Cast by trent and lyrical. That was like the one truly good series. I feel like i don't get. Yeah kinda sad but you know to each. I mean again. It's just the luck of the draw right. Yeah of course. what did you think of this tournament overall. I think it was really well run. I liked. Maybe it was a little bit too long and some ways. I think some people would argue that but at the same time it came during a dry period and dodo. So i think it was welcomed by a lot of people that there were this many games if we had more tournaments running at the same time would like the shorter format probably l. a. Soul many games. How long did this league run for months. Five so many games But their division system with division to division one relegation I think it was very well done. I think the the teams that they had were very good. Obviously it was basically all the best teams in the west playing And yeah it it was. It was definitely a definitely a good tournament. Something we love to talk about here. I just wanted to give a quick side note on that. Is the price distribution because we have very strong opinions on that Not too fond of how they split the top three. I think from wrong. I feel like this is unusual in in doda. By now they had first place be twice of second. Be twice a third so it was two hundred thousand first hundred thousand per second and fifty third and forty thousand for fourth thirty thousand for fifth sixth and twenty five thousand for seventy eight so effectively. The difference between eighth and third is half as big as the difference between third and second right I feel like this is too steep once again. I'll keep this until august. This is on the other spectrum though us the other way around right. It's usually just top heavy and then the rest are kind of similar right not tell other but scaling throughout all the top two how to say like okay so let me explain. I think it's good that the lower placements get paid this much. Because they still you know they stayed in division one they avoided relegation or they got promoted in the case of yellow submarine. So that's fine. But i think i don't think the finals should be worth this much just like i have the same opinion at ti ti. It's extreme that's totally like a different beast. But if you look at like other. I want to say other east sports or other sports with prize distribution. I don't think now. Correct me if i'm wrong on this. I don't think the finals is generally a double up But maybe this in in other games. I'm not sure that's a bit too intense. So if you if you were to ask me. I would have been very happy with something like finals. Second-place hundred thousand first-place hundred fifty. And then you take those fifty k. You give a bit more to third so that the difference between fourth and third is bigger than this. It shouldn't be a ten k. Jump going from out outside to the podium right. So i guess should be a bit more meaningful get third. It's a metal right And then the remainder of the fifty k. Can either you can give. Yeah you could probably give a bit more just like straw. Maybe don't even need to take fifty k. From i maybe you just take like three. And and i don't disagree but if got the lake we can. We can argue about details on the price for a lot of these tournaments and this is not the worst that i've seen. No no no of course not deflate on

Valorant First Strike Championships

"So. I strike has completed like we talked about last time around the like championship series. I can't remember the name anymore. The championship tour that they're going to do is going to be starting next year. So this first strike term is kinda like the the regional championships if you wanna call it that just as a test bed for all this like they had a new spectating system and stuff like that so was cool to see. I only watched an a. I haven't had time to go back. But i i know some like the five people that are interested in environment that are watching the eu division. I didn't get to watch any of these games. But i am shocked. The teams that won the teams that got to the end. I'd never heard of so the team. Heretics beat g two which is widely considered the top team not only in eu. But in the entire valerie game and then on the other side of the bracket fun plus phoenix to su nfc and again fun plus phoenix has been like the one slash two of europe for a long time and it so team heretics ended up beating. Sem f. i don't know how do you say that summoned. Fc fucking either of these teams at all the snow minnesota team heretics wins that and then for noaa which i can't speak to Really cool production. The way they did it with the remote casters and whatnot. I thought it was really well. Done overall had a three hundred thousand peak viewership. That's just for north america. You can compare that to you. Know one region in doda. It's roughly the same. I guess for like e you for the biggest. But as i don't think the biggest thing you probably has big numbers haven't checked that though any who Hundred thieves beat. Tsm three one which is really cool story. Line because one hundred thieves. I don't know if you've heard of guy named haeco syndrome. I have so he go for those. That don't knows like this older guy by older. he's thirty. he's considered an old man. Counterstrike guy back from a team liquid days where he brought them to prominence as an nfl team So he got a team for hundred thieves. It was ham and four pub. G players made the i team and they were horrifically bad. They lost every with us every game. Everyone was making fun of them then. The organizations like all right he go. We will kick these other four guys. You can build your own team. So he constructed. A team of two other veteran counterstrike guys in steel and I try nitro. Thank you are like captains of their times. They have three older guys that have a lot of experience and then two younger guys in dicey and my goodness was a fucking beast. I don't think i've ever seen anybody destroy any team harder than he did. In that grand finalist but so they go from the worst team basically with a name to winning a tournament three one against a very season. Tsm team in very convincing fashion. It was really exciting to watch and Yeah good shit. And here's the interesting. I wanna talk to you about so we've talked about how you in doda the way that it works with streaming games right which for a while. It was the gray area. That some streamers took advantage of. And now it's more constricted or restricted. I should say so. Riot allows certain streamers to stream the games as like a co streamer so you had streamers like ninja and then myth who's like a quote unquote coach for tsm. He had the highest viewership of anything including the mainstream actually watching like it was actually a lot of fun to watch because he'd be watching them just screaming like he's a cheering them on. It's like it's really cool. I was thinking like if there was an nba stream and i was like screaming and watching the sun's that'd be i feel like that'll be fun to watch and that's basically what he got to do. Obviously it lost. But

Ninja Calls for an Esports Olympics

"Some news. We've got This first news story and it's an one because this is you know this guy is the face of gaming in east sports really Essentially sports dot com and it's ninja sort of On the cover here with the headline just make any sports olympics. Ninja wishes for gaming to be bigger than ever The the this was sort of a quote that they took from his interview with g. q. Australia and ninja expressed his views about ambitions for gaming to be part of the olympics. And i'll just read the quote from ninja himself here. It says then just said sure but how about just making sports olympics. How about that make an olympics. We don't need gaming to be a bona fide sport. That whole conversation is in my opinion. Very over hyped. There are already. There are already so many diehard olympia knights who are like we don't want them tainting it. It's like all right fine we don't want to be in there we'll just create our own Do you think of that first of all. What do you think of his quote. Obviously williams conversation around. And i think there's almost some some weird nostalgia here. I believe we had this kind of discussion on are very very first. Episode of the podcast. Which is like our east sports sports right. Should they be considered sports so it. It goes back to that discussion. But what do you think of his quote specifically here well. It's really interesting. Because i i read this article. I was like right on brother. Like i literally was like we need it. It should exist. I think you're right if the olympics doesn't want to do. It carved out separately. Like and i still feel that way. I think the sentiment is really really good right. It's the right sentiment. However i have to say two things here. The first thing i'd say is okay. I know where you're going with this right like like easier because the practical reality of this as these aren't just sports. They're owned by the publishers. So how do you even begin to set this up. Like what's your conversation with riot like you call them your like hi. I'd like to throw the olympics of league of legends. And you know what riot says. We already have the olympics of league of legends. It's called the league of legends championships. Prude by only hold on. Do you have tons and tons of money. no okay way so it doesn't happen like it. Just there are so many practical barriers pragmatically for something like this to exist because the in sports the athletes through the unit that you need and they would like to compete in competitions here the publishers union. You need and they have very few incentives decide on the only way they might do it is with legitimacy if a body would true international legitimacy like the ioc comes in and says they want to do it and obviously my third thing which is came injure. You do it like if you're serious about it. You're one of the few people in the space with half and actually candidly intelligence and good enough management. That i believe you might be able to pull it off. Ray like everything we've seen about your is your career has been expertly positioned you have a lot of credibility in mainstream crossover appeal like if you think it should exists. There are very few stakeholders in the space. Could put it together. You might actually be one of the people who could start to look at that. I even knew. I don't think you can do it by yourself. But i think you probably have access to these to a network that could start to activate itself. That's my response. Then justice olympics. This kind of branding that like and he would be driving this really and you think that would cause the publishers to get in line and say this. Keep in mind right. If it's a true olympics sort of counterpart right. They would be competing in multiple sports right. There'd be there'd be an event or no no where. Where did you get that from. The people who swim. Don't also run. You just nothing. But if you're putting on an olympics there's going to be a a league of legends event. There's going to be a smash brothers event there's gonna be able to doda event right like you need multiple events with different competitors for it to be olympic kind of counterpart but what you're saying the developers won't sign on unless you bring him bagfuls of money or why would why would you if you're riot. Why would you create an event that you do not have control over right. That is an air right. Now you're right. You are the king maker. You got to say who the best league of legends team in the world is every year. And you got to get all those eyeballs and all of that monetization. Why would you create another event that all gets to crown legitimate winner in less. Either you get so much more money. It's worth it for. There's there's very few incentives for publishers to do this. The same thing happens in traditional in traditional sports and traditional olympics right. there's hockey and basketball at the olympics. But they also have their own championships so those two things can coexist the question

NIP Drops Out of Dota

"An ip also known as nip depending on who you want to be casting. Your games are no longer together in terms of the org so the oregon has dropped the doda to team completely. The in case you forgot the roster is charlie supreme saver light sonoko and my boy arrow is michika but in the official roster. I think he might still be listed there. But he hasn't played with the team for a while. He has another team entirely michelle. Maybe still officially on tryout. So that's why he was not added to the official ip roster. So i guess they're still they were still technically a four man team but so are you surprised by this not really it's just it's really How to say this is a great example of the times right. I'm gonna. I'm gonna read out the quote from there From the coo. About why they chose to do this. Because i think they're trying to make it very clear that they're not leaving doda because they don't like the game or like the team that they have or whatever but its economy right so says this year has taken a massive toll on what was already an unstable ecosystem with the indefinite postponement of the deep sea. And the international we find ourselves in an increasingly unclear path to financial stability within the game. We're seeing a high concentration of town in the region meaning that the cost of keeping up is markedly higher while revenues are dwindling. Ninjas in pajamas is one of the most iconic teams in the world competing for the biggest trophies is a core part of our dna and the road so that through is simply not viable at this point because of that we have decided to shut down our doda to department in its current format and rethink our strategy regional presence completely a special thanks go star players who have worked hard to improve. Take all positively to our all our ideas on how to rethink the current way of approaching doda to. It's an incredibly talented group of players. Who have no doubt go far. I wish them the very best of luck. So there's a couple of things here right one. Is they talk about how europe is just too expensive like the cost. Benefit here is not good when there's no d. c. n. ti. It's way cheaper on the team and other regions because the salary expectations are lower. That's one well in addition to that. Obviously you like we just said is the highest tier doda right now. So if you're not in the top echelon which they're not yup then. You're not going to be doing well either. And then if you go to another region like for example if they picked up an a team like that in the current form even make sense. I don't know with the new. Dpc calling in january. Maybe it's possible but we've talked about this before and we just can't be surprised dr sure there's teams that are actually winning right now. That are doing decently. Well that are still losing money. And that's the problem with doda in not shun. Hopefully things will start changing as a result of the dp A big problem here. Is that an order of this magnitude. Needs to pull out of the game because of economy. That's the red flag right. It's not that big leaves. Doda can have different reasons for doing it. You can leave it because your team just isn't doing well. Or you want to reinvest into another game and you want to focus on that instead but this wording to me is pretty clear it is. We can't profit off this game and it sucks because we like it. You know that that pretty much seems to be the case and they're not the first ones right the reason this is making more headlines as that it's an ip there's been other teams doing the exact same like in Multiple teams have shutdown orders. That were investing just ended up quitting. Was it crazy. The team was zoa and It's a tra- the org left first. And then eventually the team disbanded but like and they probably ended up disbanding because they had no financial support and terminally so you know it's kind of a ripple effect and all we can do is really hope that whatever valve does in the start of the next year i just hope. It's not the bare minimum. You know. I really hope they understand. And see how much value there is in getting invested in this. And how much there is to lose really by not doing it that we don't just settle. I feel like we've settled for pretty long and we need some sort of like active interference. Or whatever you wanna call it.

PUBG Mobile Announcing a $14M Esports Program for 2021

"So let me bring this up here. this is. This is from the sports network Dot com the headline is pudgy. Mobile announces fourteen million dollar east sports program in twenty twenty one The article goes on to say that They've announced their pudgy mobile global championships. The newest program boasts a grand prize pool of fourteen million making it the biggest competitive series run in mobile s sports history. This is a huge price pool for mobile. I will say Something we've never seen before. The article goes on to give some details into sort of the structure and things like that but Just to give you a sense Mobile east sports According to newzoo has Has generated nine hundred fifty million dollars. Globally So you know this is one of these things where Pudgy mobile is taking a leadership role in the mobile e sports space william first of all. Are you guys involved there at all and second of all like what do you make of the now. We're starting to see moberly. Sports price pools rival call. It traditionally sports prize pools. Yeah well first of all. I just wanna put that figure in context right because we are stunned that you know the doda invitational gets above thirty million in pricing. Right like absolutely stunned right. So that is. I think arguably you know everybody looks at doda and says well. That's the pinnacle of e sports right in terms of your payday rates and terms of price. Paul this is basically half of that right so if you were going to rank each sports payouts i believe this puts them as number four overall for potential payout structure like in terms of highest pricing. Ever so it's huge like an for a mobile game again. This isn't for like you know. Bread and butter. Pc's for settle for mobile. This is just. I mean it's so significant and i think it highlights what i am coming around to which i think is maybe difficult for you to swallow paul. But it's that mobile is so accessible and it's so ubiquitous the audience about there's just such a built in audience there and for many people in many countries right. The phone is the primary gaming device and those consumers want e sports just as badly in one competition just as badly and so the reality is it is a big white space for games to lean into and i i think pudgy mobile. It's a little bit you know. I almost ironic in my. Because i wrote in my book about how i felt like pub. G missed opportunity right like they didn't defend well against port night. They made poor decisions as a result. They kind of seated that traditional market. But this is a really strong example of that brand reinventing itself to a leadership position and actually. It's kinda funny if you look at where fortnight is today and you look at where pub. Jesus today fortnight is struggling because of its absence in multiple rights for night is booming. It really underscores that the critical value of being on a you know three by six inch pizza piece of computing hardware in people's pockets. Right and so. I have to even say this is one where i'm putting my money where my mouth is right like i've you know. Oxygen east sports has announced. I think we were in the east sports observer this week for we signed a former fanatic player out of india for pudgy mobile You know to to help us. You know look at that ecosystem and do more there and you know i think it's part of a bigger belief in oxygen that mobile has potential. But it's also part of. I think a bigger global wakeling which i'm being a part of which is like mobile is is happening in east sports weather. You know we can be hardcore keyboard and mouse. Snow aim assist. All we want but the reality is it's a really important way people game today and it deserves

Team Secret Cleans Up At Esports Awards

"Team secret for the e sports awards that i did not watch at all They one team of the year. They won player of the year which was nisha and coach of the year. Which is hain. is that all correct syndrome. Correct what do you think of that. So teamster again no. Ti this year and other other games have had the kind of their big tournaments some of them at least league for example but secret essentially winning the last. If you wanna take out the last few weeks has been seven plus money. I wanna say eight events in a row. Yeah seven months. They want everything just winning. Literally everything would you. I mean obviously our daughter bubble. So we're gonna agree right. The doda words everything. i would agree with. I don't know if i would put nietzsche's player of the year. I think it's hard to pick one. Yeah but he would definitely be one other candidates right. So i mean as it always is with these multi game award shows right. It's easy for us to say that these are great choices because we don't follow the other games that are part of it nearly as much to be honest with you. I don't even know which games are eligible to win in the sports category. If it's dodo leagues he has go rainbows. Six call of duty. Like i don't know what games are included in this is. It's hard to imagine another team in any game being as dominant the secret where this year. I think that's fair to say like you need to basically when everything right and not only that but the competition needs to be tougher which is unlikely once again because of corona because you know arguably secret even had a really tough region to play and while this was happening wasn't like it was just free easy wins because the region was week or something still tons of teams so it's super impressive I'm happy coaches got a bit more recognition so gretz to heen as well. I think he's really elevated this team to the next level they just started owning after he joined. I feel like it made a pretty big difference at least down the stretch Ceo good stuff. The thing about these awards shows though is. I don't know how much stock to put in the general. It's always cool for the teams to get recognition like this But i wish maybe it was a little bit more transparent a little more defiant. How we're going to segue into this next kind of mini topic of what do you think of award shows for e. sports in general because from my perspective i'm used to watching the oscars. I don't really watch a lot of other award shows at all but the oscars. I watch every single year. It's an event you know it's fun to watch. Even if i hate all of the movies which is sometimes the case that they just pick like the criteria just doesn't make sense to me sometimes like these artsy fartsy like movies will sometimes win for no reason. According to me but again like what criteria are they using. I don't know maybe you just don't have any taste. No that's definitely. I love in bruges. It's a great movie. Don't try to get out obligation. But what do you think from east perspective because when you look at the movies just as you know. Let's just do a one to one here. It's pretty clear. Even without knowing the exact criteria it's movies of this category but for east. There's just it feels like it's not as black and white. There's just so many different games. What is even considered an e sport. Technically speaking like. I don't even know the answer that question. That's the thing i mean. I guess the analogy of the comparison is really good though because in movies. There's also like it's super subjective. Right like what do you consider. A good movie is very different. From one person to the next head would be considered true. I suppose what it's defined as an eastport is a game that yeah but how many how big of a following doesn't need to have how significant to the price does need to be if i host a tournament in prague for one hundred bucks on eastport best escort because then then a lot of things could have won but now i i don't know what the criteria is and i think that's what we're probably agreeing on right now is that Maybe maybe are transparent about it. I just haven't seen it. I'm not saying that's not the case But yeah. I don't even know what sport is because like you said if it's just money than short that's anything could be in eastport if it needs to be x. amount of player base and have tournaments consistently running like whatever the case may be but either way. I like the idea of it. The fact that this is. I believe the fifth year in a row that their continued to do it is cool people show up to the event. There were ranked tuxes. They're trying to make it. That's where i don't like it. Actually they're trying to make it to. I don't know if mainstream is the right word but they're just trying too hard to copy everybody else like just let people show up in fucking sweatpants like were gamers man. Nobody wants to wear a goddamn suit. Unless you're a fucking psychopath syndrome okay. Being honest a lot of people do like dressing up on occasion. I think they don't like having to wear a uniform. It's like that all the time but for special occasions i think people like to do something extra like but honestly now that you it. I think it would be super cool if our award shows had people show up and team jerseys of their favorite team instead of in tuxes right. I think it'd be cool

"Natives 'vincere or commonly known as nabi is a major eastwards organization housed in ukraine they feel teams in doda fortnight rainbow. Six apex legends and pudgy. It's similar to crowdfunding from fans of the organization but also gives an added layer of control beyond just kicking in some money for a small percentage of the org. Saudi Arabia to Host $500,000 Dota 2 League Tournament

"Next thing is also tournament related. This one came out of nowhere. I don't even know what to think so. The Saudi Federation for Electronic, an intellectual sports will be running a five hundred thousand dollar tournament I believe it was at two million ri-als which is equivalent to five hundred, thousand dollars. Between the months of October ninth and December thirty first. This is out of. So. I've obviously had some history Saudi Arabia you know having grown up there and whatnot. So I always have like this. I don't know if affinity is the right word but I root on people that are of Middle Eastern descent when they're playing because it's such a small minority, right? So like Is, basically, collect a collective of a bunch of Middle Eastern people. I don't know anybody like anybody that plays from Saudi Arabia I duNno Saudi Arabia even recognize owed to. Strange. So. So this tournament just to be clear is for Saudi. Arabian players only. Yeah. It's not for the Middle East in general and just called the Saudi Arabian leak. Like it doesn't. Article that we've read what the limitations are for entry. Does five, hundred thousand dollars professional teams of Saudi Arabia region region. Was the Saudi Arabia region as an Saudi Arabia or The middle region maybe it's a sad writing I don't know it. So it could mean a multiple think if it's Middle Eastern, they would have said Middle Eastern. But if it's Saudi Arabian, it could it could mean like some of the countries like around like you know like, Yemen or like Dubai, for example, is probably the most popular eastport area in that region. but I believe five hundred thousand dollars is split between Doda and two other games that they haven't announced yet. But either way that's a shit ton of money Fika? I think is one of them actually. But really out of nowhere. And very interesting. I'M GONNA keep my eye on this one for sure. So it says eight best professional teams of Saudi Arabia region will be competing in the first tournament of the event. So I'm guessing that's And Those eight teams of Saudi Arabia, who are they? What are the best teams in Saudi Arabia? Doda. If United Radio in players, there's not. Yeah I mean it's definitely not a top tier tournament by any means, but is it even to your three? No there's. Player quality I know. I'm trying to think about their some players that might be Saudi Arabia that actually immortal but I'm not sure if they are. I don't think so. It really doesn't sound familiar. So. You'd know better than me. But I've never heard of even one team being Saudi Arabian before so. Question is if these professional teams of Saudi Arabia are allowed to take place from the other regions? That's what I'm looking at here because I know quite a few players from the Middle East that are very high Mr. so if it wasn't Saudi only, you could see some familiar faces in this tournament like for example, offer Moosh or manage or of course. Some of the players from `Nigma if they got into this Yeah. But considering `Nigma haven't announced anything about it. We're going to they're not playing it either because they didn't choose to or because they weren't allowed to I want to say the country that's produced the most players that I've consistently heard of his Jordan would you agree with that from the middle of? The most players you've heard about yeah, which does China, but I don't know if the Middle East Oh. Yeah. For sure I Jordan is the hot spot forever, and that's not that far from Saudi. Arabia? So Yeah. So who who have you heard from Jordan? Miracle. Is One. WHO's the other guy? Might just two people honestly I yep. Sore and maybe there's words we're actually. But even three would be more than any other middle. Eastern. Region because what is G. H. is Lebanon. Lebanese and then. We is. Between Syrian Romanian I consider him Syrian but I know he doesn't because I actually didn't know I thought he was just Flat out the first time I talked with him. I knew he was Middle Eastern right away. Is based on his accent. But, yeah. But yeah, it's really cool to have players in that region and We'll see what the future holds. This is out of nowhere. So I don't know how to react honestly. No, it's been so little promoted. The fact that this article came out after the tournament began it's Kinda. Interesting I, don't know that's true. I forgot it was even October now Jesus. Yeah. The. Going in some capacity, but we just don't know the stretcher.

"Let's start with though you and Julia we talked about this when tens at announced intentions to potentially combine the two massive streaming sites but today the deals intentions were made official. Both sides had relatively equal viewership share in the Chinese market, and now they combined to be the big streaming site in the world. Of course, tencent controls the majority voting power with the company is well, it's ten cents world we just live in it over in Doda to land valve is going to pump the TI prize pool. Until it bursts this past weekend, the price will which grows thanks to a small percentage of sales of cosmetic items in Doda crossed the. Forty million dollar mark. That's absurd. Last year, the price will was thirty, four million, and this year would have been around the same had ti habitant August like it has every year for the last decade or so though Ti being postponed until apparently August twenty, twenty, one according to the last vowed statement that price pool is set to just keep growing if trends hold true price will be over sixty million by next August and if that is the case I'm not. Sure. Any eastwards event will ever top it. I'm grey haired Geezer reminiscing about the Game Q. and finally speaking of Reminiscing Hilo sports has had the most positive momentum. I don't really want to speculate on it, but it could be opening up the or to a new game and halo seems like a likely possibility that's offers up upset of the sports minute I'll be back tomorrow or possibly Wednesday depending on how much news comes out tomorrow with a recap of Group and League of legends world ahead of the bracket stage would start later this week.

Doc Rivers was set to take break, says he 'couldn't turn down' opportunity to coach Philadelphia 76ers

"A week after Doc rivers in the clippers parted ways the sixers introduced rivers as their new head coach yesterday docks that he wasn't willing to coach just anyone but the talent and Philly made it a tough opportunity to turn down. That was gonNA coach anybody I can tell you that I was ready to take a break and. It just depends on the team that was available, and if I thought that team in my opinion was ready to win. That excited me and when you look at these players as young players and their potential. The fact that they've had. So much success in some ways at the age is that they are already. And where I believe they can go for me is is a job you just couldn't turn down. and. That's why I'm here. Certainly a loaded roster Zach Thomas still here with us with Steven you're up first at the end of the day, which is the tougher Doda to coach. Do you think it's PG thirteen and? Or would you go in beat and Simmons for dot? To to me, it's a Koala MPG. It's a tough. It's a tough situation because of where they are in their careers. Your I if you are a wild linnet, you're a two-time champion, the two time NBA Finals MVP portly. You're a bit indifferent as a personality. You're very businesslike approach. You go out doing what you need to do as it pertains to doing your jobs your job but in terms of galvanizing the troops around you, that's not Hawaii. Limit is you search around you talk around NBA circles that's what you consistently here in the case of. Paul George Obviously Paul Georgia's one of the more talented you know two way players in the NBA. He's a star, but unfortunately in his postseason career particularly, this postseason that was not the case and if your doc rivers and you walked into that situation, you got guys the veterans they're established stars they've got set in their ways. They believe there's a certain way to do things and what have you, and as a result, it ended up being an incredible challenge particularly when you consider what doc rivers had to absorb once Leonard Arrive Kawhi Leonard Arrive. At once Paul George Wounded Forces the clippers to trade to form in order to acquire Paul George because that's the person that he wanted to play. He wanted to play with he was GonNa practice what he felt necessary use GonNa take games off in terms of game you know load management when he wanted to he was gonNA play when he wanted to during the regular season of course, always available during the players but all of these things assist to what makes life difficult for coach particularly when you have ownership making these kind of investments that's problematic in the case of New Philadelphia Yes embiid, and Ben Simmons are young. And you gotTa get a Ben Simmons to shoot the boy only attempted seven three point the entire season last year Joel embiid attempted one, hundred, seventy two. So one guy needs to get the pulse more and stop having this big backside on a on the perimeter and the other guy needs to develop a perimeter shot. So he could be much more of a formative formidable threat, but they both incredibly young they both got a lot of promise and a lot of future. Ahead of them and they able, you know they're trainable to some degree as opposed to be definitively set in their ways because they don't have any definitive set ways that has really really worked for them and I think that's the difference. That's why I'd say it's it's tougher to coach. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George at this stage particularly for Doc rivers and what he had to deal with last year with the clippers then it would be for him to coach Embiid. EMBIID. And Ben Simmons.

ESL & Dreamhack Join Forces

"ESL and dream. Hack. Apparently are joining forces. So I read they're. They're Kinda blow whatever you WANNA call their press release. And actually read it twice just to see if. I remember correctly but they don't. Talk about anything they say they're joining forces and then that's it and I'm missing something. Are we supposed to speculate? I think it's basically a merger, right? That's how I understood it. At least I remember seeing the tweet from. Was Bonnie who worked with our works with Dream Hack. Saying I just got four hundred new colleagues Something like that so I mean I is it a full company level merge or is it a tournament level merge? That's It just says ESL and dream, hack are joining forces to further accelerate our shared mission to shape the future of sports and gaming, and to create a world where everybody can truly be somebody Aka a whole lot of nothing. But obviously like. If we talk about them merging as companies or even just doesn't matter which way it goes suppose still pretty major news resell and Dream Hack especially in Doda have done a shit of tournaments So I don't know if this does that mean that's going to be less tournaments as a result or this will accelerate even further into additional terms on top of what they're already doing. Obviously we don't know specifics but. Still Big news regardless of not having any details to talk about. I mean is is there any? Is there any way that this could be a bad thing do you think? Just, trying to look at the other side? I. Guess. Since we're speculating already by what it could mean for the scene. I don't know. The classic thing with tournament organizing and anything really is that competition is supposed to make the product. Better right. So if two of the teams that were usually competing in the past for products now work together The negative outlook is that now that they just if they will do all the tournaments together, the positive outlook as they're going to have more resources into a better job, the negative outlet this going to be competition. So maybe they need to try heart I don't know. I don't see it as a bad thing instant initially at least but you never know.

"And Onto Tournament News Cinder man does not yet just finished. Congratulations to them. It feels like it was a super fast tournament like not compared to Mega Mega was a month in this one. Felt like Mega Lull Omega. League are making league. Sorry. Reading too much chat lately. Yeah it was. It was definitely shorter I don't remember how many days whole tournament lasted, but it wasn't. It wasn't very long just a few days really at least the. I think it was just a few days. The whole thing was there. Anyway. It was. It was quick. In an absolute shocker. Secret. Won, the tournament in a three zero finals putting them on I believe eight. Consecutive Three, Oh finals. Did lose a game in the playoffs the first round. They beat VP prodigy two-to-one. Who they then faced again in the finals and they went three. Oh Five and one against them. That was their only loss. Impressive absolutely. Unbelievable. I mean I'm saying kind of sarcastically right because we're just getting used by, but it's kind of insane but they keep doing it. and. Other teams aren't catching up. It's it's amazing. They are. The true kings right now and people are saying they don't have the international competition and that's why there's no Chinese teams. There's no a well one American team they played against in one it recently, they play against G I think but is not the only team. That's a bit disrespectful to. That other NATO. Yeah This is what a toxicity comes from people like me making. Now so I don't know if there's honestly if those international competition I think they would lose more games but I, don't know if they would have lost series still I don't know how good the Chinese scene is right now. Compared to secret they're just that good. But we've talked about this before it is a, it's a huge shame. There's no ti like for secrets. Sake that is like go on like Ti's next year let's say nothing changes and they don't end up winning. It's GonNa feel so bad for them knowing that they will like if it was about now they would be in extreme advantage I feel like they would easily be the number one seed or whatever you WanNa call it going in the free runner for sure. worth noting from this time as well just to. To finish off on this VP prodigy got second. They're playing really well, and they gave secret a true challenge in I believe the first game was pretty close in the finals and the kind of got run over. The duration of the Games, wasn't that long but game one was relatively close and they also beat them in a game. They were the only team to beat them in a game. In the first series they had the quarterfinals actually one game one, and then they lost two games after obviously alliance got third and then the new Nov either we talked about last week fourth. So pretty good start for them is one of the best results Navias had lately I. Think. With this the new roster they took flight moon I believe they were called before, right? Yeah. So. Good stuff secret keeps owning. as far as. Just, following up on the Doda pit stuff. This was the first tournament to introduce the like stricter re streaming rules that valve has allowed them to. don't think any major streamer watch the Games right I can't I can't think major streamers yet. No, I don't. I wish I had more information on who streamed it at all. Because we really interested to know if anybody did it because we talked about this last week how it was. The asks from Doda pit as expected were extreme. And would have to be followed to the t obviously, and it would just

"Pages Seahawks I tried to tell him that he keeps telling me. He doesn't this one came down to the last three seconds faster. The goal line down five with a chance and cam gets stuff not even close cam though and Ross did put on a show eight total touchdowns between them but the Patriots coming up too short here is Cam Newton on getting tonight on that last play. It was a great play by. Day We had favored gain program the couple of times figure. This thing into the world to midtown but identity today. Said so confident about. Being bowed executing. Could've balanced it no looking to. Better. Better here at the end. And You know we we put ourselves in a position to win and. When you do that and just gotTa Got Senate, show you'll be. and. With that, we welcome in our quarterback Michael Vick Mike. Let's start there. Would you make that final play the game? Cam said they may have went to the where one soon times with that play but that's the play that they executed. Well. Over the last two weeks and I think he scored a touchdown early on a similar plate and even ahead of play action off of that place. So. Bet Play is a play that they can use any. Situation would be third down. Razov and has been effective. I honestly don't think it should it came down to that play. There were plays in a game I think maybe one or two cam probably would have won it back. A couple questionable, third-down caused, and which they ran the ball nate allow Camden Doda football so. Probably should've never came down to that wind play particularly, but I think cam play well play winning football. They play football on both sides and I was very impressed highly impressed but off this play will spend more plays for the doing pages in Kansas and let's really comfortable. Running a system and they're going to be a tough team to beat. Not Soon Change. They're going to beat the New England patriots. Team planning the postseason easily but at the same time. They're gonNA come situations in the game where they gonNA. have to find ways to win games like this and I'm pretty sure that they'll go back and look this film. It comes down to them being. On one and a two yard line and finding a way to get it in I. Think they was kind of shocked in that moment and just search a four play call.

Breaking Down Valve's Response to DPC

"So I wasn't sure how to approach US exactly but this may seem a little weird. We're going to read off the entire post that vowed made. We're going to split it up so that people don't get sick on my voice, of course. It's essentially read it in your normal voice or you're going to read it in your dramatic voice because if you read it a new dramatic voice, people get sick of it after one minute I what I was not planning on doing anything in my normal voice. But now that you brought it up, it would annoy people it makes me want to do it more now but regardless how you are. Valve has responded Holy Shit in valve has finally responded. To the community regarding the season that is to come. We've kind of split up between that and the Doda TV slash streaming. News. So let let's talk about the first thing which is the DPC's. So again, it's going to be a bit of a along read. We've heard a lot of the complaints re recently about the state of the DP and we agree that there's more that we should do. We want it to use this blog to walk you through what happened before what our thoughts were and what we will do going forward. Spring Twenty twenty. Once the extent of the covid nineteen pandemic became clear. We posted our plans to delay the international started pre-booking arenas for various alternative dates and countries around the world. We then began researching how to execute the international based on how different, how the different pandemic scenarios could play with the hope that we'd be able to host it as soon as possible since the spring DPC events could no longer operate anymore we started reaching out to the organizers to see what they wanted to do going forward. Some of these organizers shared their desires to run third party events to cover the period march through the end of summer. Summer Twenty twenty twenty one split this up between you and You keep going. I'll do the summer twenty, twenty, do the rest. Sorry Twenty twenty as we approached the middle of the summer, the volatility of the pandemic had grown significantly. We became very concerned about the impact it would have on future deep-sea events and the International. The global situation meant that cross regional play would be unlikely for a period of time and we have since seen scenarios globally and other competitions where teams from certain countries had to be excluded after qualifying do abrupt travel restrictions and complications. Americans can't go anywhere syndrome unless it's Ukraine Hanley while we had that was not part of the quote just to let you guys. Inter and you're. Not The competent then I would love under sprinkle in a little couple things like that just to spice it up you know but anyway. While we had already assumed that having a cry for the events was not in the cars we wanted to at least have confidence able to bring all teams together across region competition. We felt that was a very important component of how we allocate DC points for the International. We were also unsure of when the international itself would happen and given the significant lead time needed. The increase spread and the virus made harder to model out a timeframe with confidence. The potential of the season as narrative feeling to detach from the path towards the international was negative for us doing that would also necessitate a DP point decay system, which in and of itself isn't a bad thing but having to abruptly introduced decay midseason if the landscape changes has some additional downsides. Furthermore, we had also received some feedback from a couple of or that were either worried about the quality of the broadcast being lower or reluctant to want to operate GPC events in the fall altogether while neither the Cross region competition nor the relative distance to the international or absolute requirements. We felt the DPC as both the function of the international, and also as a coherent product for fans would be better served by holding off on them for. Now given that our plan was that we'd make the upcoming months open and clear for other leagues and Events to operate. Our approach historically has been to want third party tournus be able to exist outside of the international though the degree of that has been fluid over the years demands from fans and players for more structured circuits to lead to increased. Our hope was that we could both achieve a better and more coherent relationship between DC and TI. By approaching it this way as well as still along for third party events to have an impact with the overall Anders Zolt for fans still being that, there would be entertaining content to watch. In the fall. I'll give you this parrot this last section center in the you're not paying attention or you want me to read everything still you don't want them finish talking about this one I mean, do you want to break it up that way? That's fine as well as I guess, we should read the next. Okay. Moving forward. Soon. After we announced that there were not immediately proceeding that we were not immediately proceeding with GPS planned we received a lot of negative feedback from fans. We think that a lot of the points that were raised were reasonable criticisms toward us especially because we did not communicate what our intentions were and what they could expect in the future. that it doesn't say there guys. For this upcoming competitive season, there are going to be at least four third party events and leaks in the EU CIS, three in China and a few others that are still in the preliminary planning stages and are not able to commit at this time. However, there is still going to be a lot of teams, Casas organizers and fans around the world that are not going to be meaningfully served based on the current trajectory, and that is our fault for not pushing on those and supporting them enough. With that in mind, we started reaching out to many more tournament organizers to offer help and financial support in order to be able to create increased coverage globally for the remainder of the year we expect that these eventually gradually announced over the remaining season as they as soon as they are ready to communicate to fans and teams. And other feedback we got from players as well as fans was wanting more clarity in what we were thinking where the likely dates for deep-sea and tied to resume. Our look right now is that we're anticipating the start of the in the first month or two of twenty twenty one. Our hope is that by the end by the time, the first deep-sea leak concludes travel limitations will be more predictable. The CEO of Team Secret on Dota 2 & Team League Models

"So can you talk about like the you know the foundation of take grit out is different to say traditionally sports organization you know how the how the play is kind of at the center of everything. Sure sure you know when I look out in the ecosystem and not everything is like this right but a lot of teams are It's a it's kind of split where a lot of teams are player own operated in lead right which which is really good for content creation engaging with the community that kind of thing but usually like on the business side economy falters. And then you know you have a lot of new entrance into east sportswear. It's a very traditional business executive-led right whether it's you know a private Equity Company that invests eastwards. Put say a leader in place or someone from traditional. Traditional. Media The comes in place and weeds on these sports team. Where connection to the fan base in the audience is not so great. And generalizing here, right there's all different kinds of other other models I'm for us. We kind of saw this happening and what we wanted to do was to say, okay, you know, I, come from a background of traditional business. I can come run the business, build the business, but we wanted to also have very authentic and have a huge amount of player lead influence into how we build the brand into how he engaged with the fan base and the community and so that's why you know working with the DOE team has kind of foundation we said, let's build out team secret originally adopted team, but we can expand the business. We can build it into an actual business rather than just a, you know a player T-. Even today you know we. on the business side, you know run the business but on the ownership front we have some players that have ownership in the business and are also involved in the day today activities. You know we've been lucky enough to have on the PODCAST and scraped content with a few kind of like OJ's is the industry especially you know you had. We've had God's. All the you know he's being paramount in in a lot of commentary and building the same globally and we had pay p day kind like the shining light out of trying to build anymore it's America We've had unloader from Sweden as well and I guess you guys have another one especially, which is in the interim with poppy. So I'd love to I'd love to talk from your perspective around a lot of my discussion with paper day especially was around the business structure of the way that daughter to works versus are other Games. So there's like an article that came out about a Singapore tame, which is just disbanded was like the the shining stuff out of that region and. One of the major reasons they said that it that it disbanded his Ju to just a lack of understanding or the lack of support from valve in the to infrastructure it's it's you know it's great presence and cradle content around how you know the DOJ to international is the largest single single price police boats tournament. You know thirty plus million dollars in the first place team will often walk away with ten million dollars in the pocket and it's fantastic. You Ajay and you win those inter but it's it's not great if you don't qualify for the international or you know if you want to rely on something other than simply pros money so be interested in talking about. How do you say that the dietary market obviously guys legal agents Tuesday say by Candidate that franchise very strict model of detaining applying onset and Thomson indicts. You've got all that structure heady. This is done until you, which is just really all over the place but but massive priciples. Yeah I mean I think there are pros and cons of both models I think in. League of legends at the the model tends to be more Even across more equitable across tons of opportunities where all the teams and I think in Doda, it's very much like feast or famine I if you know. If you look at all the teams right from previously is it's like. Either you're a top four team and you. kind of break even or slash make a small profit or you're not a top four team and you're just like losing money all the time. Basically note right and it's like the the price was a little bit of a Mirage because. In Doda, the majority, the vast majority of the price will go to the players and this is not knock on the players because I think the players are super telling that they deserve everything that they that they earn right But outside of price full, there's not a huge amount of other opportunities except for direct sponsorship. For teams actually drive right and you need teams because you know. Not every player is like some players are very mental to be in contact creators influences on all that stuff but the vast majority players I know just WanNa, play I. WanNa play, and so in order for Doda and Doda brands to to build into sort of products. And to market the players into engage and build the audience and do all these things. You'd Orquesta do that right? Because the players are not going to do it themselves and they didn't WanNa do themselves they want to they want they WANNA play right? They want to figure out strategies they want perfect game. And so you need to have an ecosystem around as supporting structure around that to be able to enable them to do that as well as. Create this product around Doda so that the fans can engage in consume it. And I think the I think the finances did the structure Doda is is dangerous because you know the the the kitchen seen not not super well supported even in the tier one scene beyond top four teams I don't think you're doing too well. and you'd see you know teams exit. You see teams go in and out. I'm for these reasons because it's like you either you're winning all the time and you're kind of stable from that because you have some price earnings or. You know you're just like middle of the pack number seven, number, eight, I, I don't think you're doing too well. You're really relying on brand sponsorships and things

"If you improve tons of things in your game and you consider Doda three, and then people are disappointed, because it's not something insanely new. Like how new does it need to be to be two three? That's no, that's a. that's a really. I never really thought of from that perspective. I mean the issue, so if it's Doda three its own client to different game. You can't call it. A three just takes over with Doda to is right not. Because then it's not really a three D. C. battlefields that come with every fucking year just. The cannibalize each other sure, but they don't lower take over the client. There's separate feel like it's different when it's a free to play game like then the perspective is different, right? In, battlefield to 'CAUSE, they're pay to play games so whenever they make a new one it's. To make profits so people by the game right, but if you have a free to play game, and you upgraded a lot. You could just say it's the like. Doda has now gone and now it's Doda three. Isn't that what fortnight with fortnight to it's just? It's the same client. Now's just fortnight to, or did they just call it that and it was a patent. Just the season seasonal change a little different, because they actually make kind of called it fortnight to though, didn't they? Community did I could be saying stupid stuff here I'm not trying to by your logic than. Dodo reborn was Doda three. In some respects you could have. An extent, yeah! Yeah Technically have called Dodo three. It changed the game a lot. No I'm not saying it didn't. Matter I'm just holding onto this old like mentality that it just needs to be a new game to be called a new game right all I'm thinking is from the perspective of what helps game the most and I think something like that generates a lot of Hyena what? So you come out with Doda three, it's exactly the same as Doda to accept tournament..

I I love that the game that I'm the guest on is a game about like social skills skills. We need to bring in someone who's been to a party not only been invited but accepted you till the seaman men that were cooling up. Gabriel before we get into before we discuss more about seaman. I'm curious about you as as a as a just as a Gamer in general no. You're someone who plays games. Did you game a lot growing up yeah. I played way more as a child than I do now got it. I still play <hes> several hours a week but I used to play like every single day after school and then all weekend days like summers were just either we were at the beach or playing Nintendo in the basement or Super Nintendo in the basement or playstation the the several hours a week. What are you playing now right now. I'm playing <hes>. What the Hell is it called. I sound great great. It's Doda Doda legends something. Oh you were planning this team game. It's a rate is like the Doda underlings game. I forget what it's called. Is this a Moba. Here's the storm you know. It's sort of a Doda under lords called yeah please <hes> I fucked that up. At least gamers are like forgiving people well. If you don't get the details exactly that'd be precise out is the auto chess one this is. I've heard about that. I haven't I haven't played. I don't quite understand understand what auto chess is but it's really it's kind of fun. You sort of set it and forget it. It's like magic the gathering where you like build your deck but your deck is players like is creatures or characters instead of cards and then you just sort of like in one round and there's like eight people playing against each other at any time and then like you're going taking head to head battles and you're like shit. This guy smokes like this guy smoked me now. I hopefully I win the next one 'cause you get money and then you can do upgrades and shit. It's really fun got it and the Senate and forget it thing of like the thing about heroes of the storm my old addiction. I would get like my PTSD. I know like stolen valor but I would like be done done playing and I'd we like such twitchy like clicking and moving and paying attention is important yeah and I like to use performance enhancing drugs. When I'm playing video games like those games you have to pay a lot of attention are not ideal for me. I pretty much gave up on most multi players wow but you were but here's the storm is a multi-player. CB Z. Basically that's the doto legends or basically exactly yeah. I like. I love roleplaying games. I love first person shooters but I only do campaigns. Do you know what your transition into Doda was like. If I played final fantasy online it was because I I played dragon quest then played final fantasy games then I played final fantasy online and then I was just like fucked like what was your path. I think we'll go before under lords will be heroes of the storm and got to heroes of the storm via Blizzard Blizzard which I'm just sort of Radio Fan 'cause I played all like those were the games once I went to. Pc of console I played college was was age of Empires and all to conquers edition and then nonstop on Blizzard Games just switching whatever the newest one was like junior year Diablo came amount my junior senior Diablo two. I think it was came out from my computer for the PC and I was like faulk. I had like so my senior year and I was is dating my now wife then and she would be like Oh..

"East sports are new to gaming or are gamers. What was your thoughts on that? Yeah, so I think to go for the kind of the the second half of that I think. Even if games shares genre, and obviously Doda and league have kind of this shared history of responding one, spawning the other and they kind of. The team fight tactics. These kinds of things where a new genre pop up in multiple people take a stab at it and made me more than it'll be successful. Maybe only one will be successful. I think those individual games are. Typically pretty unconcerned with. Making themselves align with the other games inside their genre. You know what happens in league stats. Doda statisticians might care build a little bit about it, but they're more concerned with being authentic to what's happening in Doda. And and what's happening in the way, the game is played the way that community works. They're much more concerned on maintaining their own vertical. In the whole community of everyday players up to the pro scene than they than they are, and then they should be with what's happening in a so similar game. In the same genre, there are definitely things you can learn from one another, and you should be you know it's competitor research, and whatever else right? Or whether it's collaborative. Approach but I don't think. If. You're trying to apply. League of legends statistics into Doda. There are certain things you can carry across. At the. Foundational level you know these these games work on a similar way. You can have things that killed at the rate ratios. You can have things like. Creep score or last heads like these are fundamentally pretty similar, but the the further you advance in the complexity of what you're analyzing and the kind of the analytical stories are trying to tell the more you have to kind of divorce those from another and say. On the surface, these mason quite similar, but. We might be able to put in a certain kind of advanced creep score based metric and league. That wouldn't actually make sense even if the numbers exist in the same format to to say the same statistic in Doda. Might not actually make sense to the way. The game works the way the game flows the way people think about the game. There are some places that that overlaps. But other places where it definitely doesn't. And I think just blindly copying pasting those over is GonNa get you in a lot of trouble. With the community, and also with the conclusions you, you arrive at so I think it really starts with at core understanding the game you're working on. Understanding the community around that game the conventions that go into understanding it. Go into analyzing evaluating that game, and then you build your analytics based off of that foundation. What are you? What are you most excited about when it comes to what the future of? East sports analyze analytics lie And terms of technology like what would excites you know we kind of touched on.

"It's really good. And what else about regular oak and the third time very that. And he got the same answer tree times on the row. And of course, he laughs, we smile both. Because the oak was a little bit on top of the wine. And then I thought working, but I remember that period because I also worked as a so many late nineties. I remember that period where wines are often the find by how expensive they were to make it's expensive to buy good oak. So considered rare and yet in countries to have it, and then that seemed great and now when people look back off, and they kinda look back with different lens and say like a how could you over? Okay. That's a cycle that was a period, and by then early two thousand everything in the was hokey, and you know, a lot of new opening by and little bit more extraction in the case of this wine. But the that was a moment for those wines and people doing the like that I don't have any idea what was going on near port. But it seems to me like sometimes the dry wines d'oro in that era. There was some level of civic -ation and sometimes I find that oak hangs a little bit more differently. More obviously with acidified wines in general in Doda, stilleto visitation. And because many cases you don't have the balance. Specially if you don't such for the right Vitz to the table wine. So if you got the very good vineyard supports that this planted two hundred thirty two south facing amazing ports..

"Like that. And so the the way it works is you've got these heroes and the kind of work in a way of how you imagine. They might work in Doda where the red heroes are like acts and Centaur. Out the these guys are going to be big and beefy because that's what they are. So they're gonna have names like accents Centaur, you can expect big baby beefy dudes with muscles that love bringing the ax. There's actually have a name probably, but he refers to himself in the third person tax calling him anything except act true. They also, you know, a lot of these cards a lot of hero cards will have either a passive or an active ability. That's one of their abilities from the game. So Centaur has returned image. You hit him you're gonna take a little bit of damage. Back cards also have all sorts of magic type effects like trample. I mean, that's what's called magic. If it was called in this game. You know damage we'll go through the tower or cards will hit other cards cleave spent has cleaved built in MC sense. Right. That's his whole thing in Doda. So it kind of had I feel like Doda players will have an advantage. Once they kind of get base walls down. I feel like everyone's going to start the same level in this game. Everyone's going to go and be like what the fuck is this? There's three lanes where do I play my cards? What is this game has a really good tutorial? Okay. Way way better than Doda way better than the other. You've played other card games. Yeah. Right. So like between like net runner and heart stone like you probably have some kind of a leg up just conceptually in terms of like, hey, here's what this basic idea is. Yeah, that definitely like, you know. It will benefit you. If you like card games in this card game. You know, you'll be able to learn the systems a little bit faster. You'll be able to start thinking about the meta maybe a little bit sooner, right? To'real though is really good really slowly walks through everything the game of super generous with information. "New to game. Well, hey, don't is hot. I don't know. Hot bench press, find huge jeeze everything. Anyway, more like Doda three am. I right. You are good. Glad I could in that regard troops anymore. Hell xactly. What is cod allies call? It's called Ignace twos. He summons a will of the wisp puts. Puts the artifact is the Doda card game developed by valve and in conjunction with Richard. Different games would be much different. Garfield of magic the gathering and other card game fame and eights Mondays Hades Mondays loves tapping his lasagna put it right in his mouth. What nothing you got to love? If you're going to eat. It comes to Zahn. Yeah. My motto is got to. Before we kick it. The Minnesota card game. And it's fun. It's it's cool. I've been playing right now in the closed beta for just a couple of days in locked to his ago, and it's neat. It's complex. And there's a lot going on. But it has I think that as a game. It's a game. It's fun. It's engaging. It has a lot of different angles of what strategy. There's kind of comes down to there being three lames basic gameplay Doda Doda, and that there are three lanes and kind of like Doda you win by winning two of those lanes. Yeah. I guess in car game terms. It's like. Three hands of cards. Well, like three separate hands of cards next each other. But it's the same hand of cards that plays between I'm using the term hand replacements to play. One the one hand that your cards come out of there are three separate groups of cards. That are distinct from each other and you win by taking two of those down or taking one down once which exposes the ancient which has twice as much health as any of the towers and the new kill that thing. So you can really like go super hard and one lane, but you're going to lose those other two lanes every game. I've played his ended with two lanes being taken out rather than ancient. I'm not gonna try and even explain how to play because Brad you sat down with me as I played a game. Those your first time data's first time I've seen artifact ATL. Again, it is a lot especially if you haven't played other card games of a similar nature. I I would say it is similar in effect. It's like a weird blend of heart stone in magic to the it's got that magic feel of the goal of the game is to attack sort of the other player directly like each tower has forty points. And you do those by using the orc heroes or creeps that you summoned to attack the other player, but you can put down creeps in front of them. And they're gonna fight each other. You basically want to take out the cards. They have protecting tower. So you can strategically do damage to the tower, exactly. Like Doda life Doda guy. And that's the thing is this really does have a Doda feel to it. I think they did a good job of not just making the dodo car game. If feels like they did work from just a good card game model at the base. Like, I feel like it went like this. They sat down with Richard gir- field and said we want to make a game that involves three lanes and heroes and go from there. It does it does feel like like sit around and say here watch a hundred hours of people playing dodo distill that we're going to break down. What is and you just make a good card game around that. And I think they did that. And then they just juiced it full of Doda flavor here and there. Cotton candy, like no one of those turkeys syringes close of garlic in Turkey. The food. So it is just like did. So the Turkey artifact garlic is Doda based at the game in Doda, juice. Yeah. Yuck. They really did. You can tell got thanksgiving on the mind. Brad. You saw a lot of stuff that made. You just kind of reminded you of. Sure. Every every time you try to describe the game, you either get super deep into crazy rules or you say, it's like a Doda. It's tough game. I know I know I'm not I'm not like, I just it's yes. It's it's hard. Ask me anything about it seemed like Rhoda. We'll DOE two players have a leg up on. "We got a bit of news on artifacts, the Doda card game coming from valve. It's going to be coming out of the twenty eighth for twenty bucks, and it will be playable at Pax west this month. Yeah, it makes me bummed. I'm not gonna packs this year because I would like to try that out a while. Interesting that you're gonna have to pay for it. I'm surprised because all the other card games every. Yeah, with booster packs and stuff. Yeah. Let's take a look at the free games coming from twitch this month. Obviously, it's going to be a downside because July they gave us like twenty one. Yeah, but we got anti-hero, death squared. Joe n- iota n- every that one steamrolled day and wizardry bundle. Your thought was like five through seven? No. Oh, is it just six and seven kinda says there. Yeah, I'm trying to trying to read it as well. Eight. Yeah. Okay. Oh, the they'd is a stylish eight in the background. Okay. Yep. So those are getting this month, those complain there. Yeah, those are some good stuff. I never played deaths squared though, but it's it's okay. Okay. Yeah, it was like a free game on XBox like a month ago, two months ago. That sounds about right in Raleigh on at some point as well. I played it on switch. I be that on switch awhile back. Gotcha. Places. Plus for August, though we're getting quite a bit mafia three in dead by daylight as well as knowledge is power, which is a playland game. So it's one of those like a local multiplayer use your phone games. Yeah, so that's fine. I'll I'll check those. Oh, that's funny. Here they lie, which is a PS VR game. I'm excited to get some more PS VR stuff. So she for free, although I understand you can play this, not the are as well. Bound by flame serious Sam, three draw slasher and space hulk. Okay. Base Holck is the war hammer game, right? I think I think so. This is a vita version of it. Yeah, it's the war hammer. Forty k. okay. Okay, cool. Senate for mafia three. I heard things about that game goes, here's Sam. Three is good. Yeah, this is by daylight, man. All right. Yeah, this is all right. I'm excited to get some more place edge of actually speaking. I should've talked with this. I played a whole bunch of rec room. Okay. The weekend. I had some people over for my with my VR because now that my risks are good. I can use the wand controllers that I got a little while back. Right. Rec room is just awesome. You guys seen this game. Thank so this is a, it's it's a free game. And it's basically just like a social hub with a bunch of weird VR mini games that you cannot only make, but then play. Obviously they have a dumb like battle royale version of it in there and stuff. But I think the main part of it is you can go into a rec center, a rec room and just hang out with random that also have the platform. So there was just a few like Australian news that were way into like pouring water on everyone's head. They kept putting a bucket on everyone's head. It was just like a silly fun time. Everyone like Canada's got into the role like there's like confetti guns. "That water down the san walking river where the move from bryant to them in doda pool at that point that water be moved into the uh west side farming am or uh san luis reservoir but in between it creates additional water additional cold water for fishery enhancements that's the public benefit i mean our project does that it it creates additional recreation it it it it also prevents the regular flooding that occurs particularly like for the cities a firebomb and doda that always have to worry about that one when that occurs project does a lot of public public benefits but because they could not connect the dodge eight it'd be to see in terms of our computer modelling that that that shows a flows that that that basically shut us down uh but going back to uh when we when we hit the wall and it didn't look back that wall was coming down that's when we engage started legislators to put a little common sense into the program and so we were able to have a secondary meeting where we got much better clarification much more dialogue between our technical people and their technical people and so now we are confident that that we know how to appropriately put together a documentation and they call it an appeal process so as to go back and have them we score project my my and my guess would be a sites is doing exactly the same thing as probably the rest of them are you know so i think that with the within probably in the next six days we'll see a turnaround in that whole scoring system but but y but bit believe you me uh we will real frustrated the way this begin okay question how many times can we go down this road or will they will they go down this road of interpreting the information that we give them and restoring their original scores on public benefit well in terms of this particular stage.

"Um towers are not as easy to destroy as they once were because you used to be able to just a eliminate the amount of ammo that they had and then they were not going to shoot at you so that made them ineffectual they have infant ammo now they will never run out of ammo much like in doda in league and uh so you can't utilize that strategy you have to actually be there and push with your minions forward the also change the way that some of the a big mercenary camps that you can attack will operate lots of little changes that all add up to a big difference in the early phase the game and it's cool man it's cool that that a game can change that much um and i'm i'm having to relearn how to play that early phase which is fun which i'm doing by the way in my in a weekly coaching session with how ferguson that you that i stream on caffeine dot tv slush of on wednesday's that's i feel like it's a can too for off the millier with you know the wave nfl every year changes makes chain that you know where kickoff celebrations back row well i don't mean that but also there but like you know you kick off from here field goals have from from here where some it doesn't play the game a lot it's like okay the game looks the same mike are to watch them and play a that's the same game but i feel like for pros are for someone like usually taken as seriously i imagine it pretty fundamentally changes the game that you know and love right well that's what so cool about these living games you know and and that's why it really takes devotion to one of the me it's hard to dip in and out of of games like this or a really competitive games that can rise and fall based on a very small uh a small alteration of some very specific point surveys numbers basically on meta hunting meta hunting in a fighting game yeah i mean it it it they called the meta in these games to well they just changed a character so that character is either the character that everybody has to watch out for or play or that characters completely fallen out of the meta and.

"To the kid mitchell tra bisky then glen he comes out eddie leads them from that rain delay leagues them a touchdown drive and i think a lot of people were saying let's go to trubisky but then glenn and lead them on their touchdown drive with a nice pass the kendall right and it completely reverse his did not you got to stick with mike leading edge just lousiania and only that glen in they should have won their first game well him a great thing they wouldn't be saying any of that today that game against atlanta had been one right a conversation today off unita conversation off of the thursday night game and you have a couple of options you got the davante adams hit and you got the quarterback controversy in chicago during doda tedeschi aaron rodgers so excellent at this point that you can't even talk about the excellence of aaron rodgers he threw for under two hundred yards yesterday had four touchdowns no interceptions he's got the best touchdown interception rate in the history of the sport and i felt really bad for my glenn and on the aesthetics of that as well last night because beyond the on the field with that quarterback makes you look all the more amateur because just about everyone by comparison jer on accuracy looks amateur and so you could see some of the interceptions are throws that aaron rogers would simply never make right just doesn't make him a joke but when you're seeing it on the field against each other when you're watching it there and it's not just there roger it's aaron rodgers at home like not on one of those snow nights the weather was great romo your show me something when you start predicting the lightning delays spell dance getting jealous of romo added it doesn't like it at all what around the paul guillermo is man's getting jealous of roma because syms spoke one spoken to wear nance was done at roma will just thunder in and he will hijazi and hire him getting all the praise for it like nobody's nobody when's the last time you heard somebody stand up and applaud jim nannte each jarring to me how comfortable tony romo is just jumping in and it's not he's not necessarily jumping in with polish he's got no polish no politics polish while he's trampling this anguish broadcaster jim then did on care and how about this in keeping with.

"Uh writing negative reviews of doda to on steam just because halflife three never happened and there or episode three and their contention is that if doda had never taken off maybe they would have made a this game um so christian what do you make of all this is this i mean i guess it's a cool thing that we get to see what this guy was thinking of four for the third part of the story but can the feels like much ado about not very much well i think it shows how important halflife was to gaming and how much people still hold is near and dear to the heart like like like rich said you know it's been forever since most of us have played those games but it it his surpassed that right like halflife and halflife to is that rare game that has stepped out of being just a game it's petrous or whatever you know there's like maybe five of them in half life is one of those things were even i think non gamers are aware of it to some extent and then people that have any connection to gaming are totally connected to it and even this younger generation alec riches ten year old kid is sitting there aware of head crabs and all this and night this thing is exists or never has come out or whatever so i think it to speak to the popularity of it and then to it also the other side of that is that it is so long ago that its tapping into people's nostalgia in away because a lot of us it's a lot of old men going like all those were the days and mike it's less about half life and more about the summer of ninety seven when i met a girl and i had a car we all drove had leather jackets on hunt you don't like it that in rome half life you're not wrong the in fact the the news stream this week is just full of that full all right we'll get some more of it but there's another point i wanna make about this which is.
