"It. Is that? Yeah, like obesity and dietary habits are greatly influenced by your friends network. I can definitely speak for experience. I used to smoke cigarettes for about six years, seven years and all my friends smoked cigarettes ended. It wasn't really until I kinda like moved from. I grew up in Boston, but moved from Boston to Philadelphia and just got like ten tirelessly new friends circle where nobody smoked and everybody was healthy. And I was like, maybe I should quit smoking. But I mean, if I never, I never changed my friends that are call. I'd I'd still be smoking today so we haven't talked much about, you know, the technical technical stuff that that we love so much you. You did mention that for sampling, you too. Kosta sampling methodology also been discussing network analysis, but I'm wondering what's one of your favorite data sign? See techniques will methodologies just something you love to do when playing with Daito. That's a. That's a great question. That's really good. I don't want to add wanna sound blame and kind of basic, but logistic regression, right? All of that's like super simplistic. But like odds ratios are great because everybody understands old. They're easy to calculate and you'd be surprised how much data you can get with a binary response. You just like, you know, like, do you like mangoes? Yes. No, like do you use condoms? Yes. No, like you do? Are you an injection drug user? Like did you go to doctor last week? Yes, no, but like you know, like anything that's kinda like binary and then by extension you can do multi variant logistic regression type nuts to blanket on the Turner. But basically you can also do like odds of things with more than more than a binary set. You can do it with like different levels of categories as well to get different odds, but that that works out real well. Actually, when you not only like collected analyze data, but when you present it. So if data sciences really got kinda like lead the way in helping to change health policy. In this case, you have to be able to kind of communicate your results. Two people who might not be as minded. So while I can get until I coating about like our show, you know how this data management and things that it's great and I love it. Like I know the project coordinator for lion, for example, that doesn't like it at all. Or like. And unless you can kind of put it in a graph like their attention span Wayne's after like three minutes in so dead logistic regression is probably a great way to communicate a lot of results in my in my experience. Yeah, I agree completely. And as I've said this time and time again on the podcast, but for people who a non technical, you can show them that a ten percent increase in this fate Shah results in this probability in in the outcome. And in that sense, it's into a portable which exactly massive gains. Exactly. It's doubts that that that like kinda what you just said is like a great way to just explain it. It's it's short easy to understand. You know, just something like that, like the odds of this risk factor, increasing your risk of contracting HIV are such and such. A, however, like kinda behind the scenes is like the way you sample the way you collect that data to make sure I like your analysis correct on that gets to be quite complicated. For example, the two stage cluster designed thing using like randomly like assigned GPS points. That's that's somewhat complicated than it takes a little bit to do. But in the end, you kind of like you try to distill it down to things everybody can kind of digest. So my last question views, do you have a final call to action for our listeners out there? Yeah. Yeah. I guess get some a little different than a lot of people that that come on this podcast in the sense that I don't always use massive data sets. Are not always kinda like crunching out numbers in very clean data. But at the same time, like I think I think people should get into data science and get into kind of more Moorefield work out there. There's definitely a place for people to get out of the office, collect on data analyze than actually have like actionable results. So don't let the fear of sitting in a cubicle somewhere. Just pumping out code, dissuade you from doing data science scientists for everybody. Fantastic. Derek has been such a pleasure having you on the show. This is great. I had a real fun time really good. Thanks for joining our conversation with Derrick about his work with Doctors Without Borders. We saw the unique challenges encountered on the ground by Derek and his colleagues in performing baseline health assessments in LA township. Myanma these range from small sample sizes to the need for robust experimental design to basic challenges in the data collection process, which we don't really think about Intech practical challenges such as lack of electricity forcing surveys to be conducted with pen and paper. "doctors without borders" Discussed on DataFramed

"Hundred people trying to get to Europe. MSF has these boats that kinda help basically just bring people in to make sure that they're safe. They don't die. They don't drown. Any said it was the most intense experiences ever had on like elderly NAMA, south. I'll see if I can kind of look at the data and things. Collect Minna turns out that because has operated all over the world. They need a lot of help with data science because that that knowledge that they gain helps form formulate help, shape their policies, much in the same way that when you work in a lab, you publish a paper. People like, oh, this molecule is related to another molecule. We're gonna go with this and that helps shape science. You get the help kind of shape like health policy of sorts for show. And I love that you mentioned, you know the data collection processes, something that you're passionate about and and involved in, and that certainly will get to particularly with respect to the Beith on health assessment you've been doing in Lyon township. Because I think a lot of working data scientists and a lot of news when I think about data science and data collection, they think, you know, clicks and browser by stuff and stuff that's put in a database as opposed to getting there on the ground into remote areas and conducting the touch of serve as you do. That's a little taste for will. But before we get there, I think a lot. People have a sense of what Doctors Without Borders does, but I'd love a brief rundown from you on the work that Doctors Without Borders does from from your position on the ground. So doctor's orders basically is a kind of an impartial and neutral NGO that provides healthcare to anybody, particularly in humanitarian crisis be that natural disasters like earthquakes or typhoons or more like manmade disasters, like in like in war zones, they provide humanitarian relief. And so what doctors borders does is they go to these areas and they basically provide humanitarian aid. And so most of the most of the projects, for example, that I'm part of tend to be very short term. So before I can't Miramar are actually in a refugee camp in northern Uganda doing actually a big household survey on mosquito nets, but in the refugee camp itself. So we were just kinda like living there and doing enduring Mark there. But it was short. I was only there for about four months in so whereas compared to a lot of development work, where they can be in an area, for example, like Red Cross or your aid or this plenty of development, NGOs that can be in an area for for years for decades. So that's kinda kinda what does is provide humanitarian aid to places in crises. Great. So given that context around what is essentially a mission statement of MSF, what are the biggest challenges that the organization faces that data science and analysis and analytics can help to solve? Basically getting to know, I would say in my experience just getting to know the context of where a health clinic works. And then how do you, how do you take that knowledge than and inform the policies that like bring your your decisions forward? Because I'm efforts in so many different areas in so many different countries. It's it's credible. They know about the context that they're working in every place is different. So when I was in Uganda, that is completely different than what I'm doing here now at Miramar and the people who kind of help the side what to do in terms of like in terms of projects in terms of policies, they need as much information as they can get. And so as an epidemiologist, my job is to basically do monitoring evaluation of some of these projects and then putting together kind of internal reports that people can really and then be like, oh, okay, like you know, the these people that are taking hepatitis c. drugs. For example, maybe twenty five percent of the bike, don't complete their treatment. What are we gonna do about it? Or in the case of like, like when I was in Uganda, we're looking at passing out mosquito nets to people in the refugee camp. But the problem with that also is that a lot of times people will try to kinda tend to misuse the nets. So a lot of times you'll use it for like fishing and I didn't know this. Actually didn't know this until I started working there until we started collecting the data to look at this. A lot of times people, the nets really strong, and they are like they're just perfect for catching fish, and they're already in like a little basket type shape, and you just kind of throw it in the water and like you and they're just, they're actually really good for for fishing, which is a total misuse of the nuts. So the the, the survey that we did, our kinda helped us form these educational campaigns. And so we were actually go to different parts of the camp and be like, hey, guys, don't go fishing with us like this. You know, like this is more from -squitoes and so really helped get people to understand like to use the nuts better and that that's the purpose of the data. So you got the data and that actually helps shape what everybody is going to be doing it. So it's kind of it's it's cool in the sense that you actually if you stick around a project long enough, you actually get to see your results translated into action, which is something. That I, I know when I used to work in the states, sometimes you can publish a paper and you just never see the results. And then it gets really depressing. When you realize that only like three people have cited your paper, you're just like, oh, okay. Like what's the point? Yeah. As I said before, it really seems like data science in in in this form is so different to what people think of when they think of tech data signs for example. So maybe you could speak to the types of differences that are, I think, dominant in your mind with respect to all. It's it's, it's different. So like it's funny because the statistics at its core, the statistics in study design are very, very similar in very much kind of the same. And so which which I think is like really fascinating, but you can take your survival analysis or like you're just aggression or you're like Coster designs, and you can apply it to like schools in England, or you can apply to like villages in northern Miramar. But at the same time of the data, I, I'm getting used to finding messy data and it's smaller data. So while nowadays, people used to having these gigabyte size data sets with hundreds of thousands and thousands of observations. Sometimes like here a lotta times, you might only get a couple hundred people and so you're not actually kinda like working with like big data. And then when you have problems with your variables, like if you have a lot of missing variables, for example, you might have to start getting creative in do things like imputation or. Might have to like draw a question in general, just be like, oh, it didn't quite work out. And so it's it's very different than using larger data sets and even the data collection process is very different. Right. In terms of what you do when you're running surveys, whether it be with pen and pipe and then putting them into your spreadsheet or computer program will data by Slidell. Yeah, the collecting the data, I, I love it. That's that's the fun part. That's the the best part of it is that when you actually get to go to the field, like for example in LA, hey, we actually got to take motorcycles and go from village to Billig. And it was kind of like off roading like through the mountains of north Miramar to go to village the village, and then you do these household based surveys when you get there. And so here, like right there to collect the data and see how it's collected and see like what? What questions work? What questions though? And it's, it's kinda gives you a better feel of where the data comes from and that it's kind of a, it's it's nice actually like that you get to the kind of actually like see the birth of your data for lack. I mean, that's ounce sappy, but like it's kinda like how you data is all that's a wonderful. Yeah. While we the most nerdy thing I've ever said, you understand the data providence in in that sense in you, you know what all your units are. It's not like you're being handed a CSV or opinion API way you may not actually have the correct assumptions about about your data. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. And it's interesting. I've MSF I've done surveys where we use electronic means data collection. So of us, both epi info on a smartphone and a program called Dharma. Dharma is a, it's a service that's actually started by next MSF staff. She worked in the the Bulla outbreak, not the most, not the one that's currently going on, but the one a couple years ago and it was like we need better data collection tools. We need like almost real time information about what's going on because things in an outbreak like Ebola change so fast. And so they were actually an allergist, and they actually ended up just kinda creating this program that allowed for not only. Data collection, but it also projected just trends and statistics on a dashboard and ended up being it was really good. But at the same time also like in Lante because our teams are out for a week at a time, and it was very rural and rugged. We resorted to paper based surveys, which are horrible. I think from here on out, I think I'm just going to have to go the electronic data collection route his paper based surveys. There's no checks and balances. So if somebody puts down, like if you're interviewing somebody and they say their age Israeli like ten years old, but you put down one hundred, there's no like little auto Matic check. That will be like, beep, you know, like those making snow testing nobility. Yeah, asked you date. And then also you have to enter the data which takes double the amount of time. So not only you collecting the data, but then you have to like get somebody to enter the data which takes forever. So electric data. I'm glad MSF is adopting smartphone tax. For like entering add, collecting data mix things a lot easier for show. But as you said, if you're an original, you might not have access to to electric city for a certain number of days. You know, there are only so many battery packs you can carry. Right? Yeah, yeah, that's the, that's the problem. And so we, it was. It was decided finally that because we're spending about a week in the field at a time. So the survey went over the course of about two months, and people would go out for a week, come back for a day or two arrests. And then we would go out again for week the, but these are these are areas with no electricity, no cell phone coverage for the vast majority of it until you start getting to the border of India and that India has some pretty great cellphone coverage or at least not like that region, but you you really just, you can't charge your battery pack or your phone. And then if you actually drop phone or something happens to your phone, you lose a whole week of data out of a two weeks process. Entity, very hard to go back and redo it. So we decided to go with with paper surveys, and then we just had like waterproof folders. So it has its pros and cons. I tend to be a little more tech oriented like we could go ahead solar chargers. We're gonna have like four battery packs in, you know, we could have gone out for maybe two days at a time, but that in the end we ended up doing paper for sure. We'll jump right back until interview with Derek Johnson after a short segment.
