"This message comes from USA facts, a 2022 lead sponsor of the indicator from planet money. To find solutions to issues, Americans need to understand how the government serves the people. So let's dive into some of the problems and solutions that come up in essays in the book. Of course, I want to start with the economics chapter. I couldn't help it. You knew this was coming. Naturally. There is a really fascinating essay by Karl from wesleyan university, which may not be super exciting for most readers. But I was like off the charts excited. My heart rate went up. And the title is how the Federal Reserve can help black workers. Yes. For a lot of people, the Federal Reserve is a very kind of esoteric, you know, it's like the raising lower interest rates that get very boring speeches. It's like how can they possibly help black workers in the U.S.? So lay out the strategy that Carl presents. So essentially, you talked about the FOMC, which is the federal open market committee's statement on the longer run goals and monetary policy strategy. The FMC right now is being used to ensure that not only is the recovery broad based, but it's also as inclusive as possible. And he cites it as a way to think about, okay, if we're going to ensure that we have inclusive economic recovery moving forward, black workers are really, really good proxy for that. So we can't say that the unemployment rate is dropping for everyone if black workers are still very much out of work and they're unemployment rate is rising. So for example, I think there was some chatter some time ago where people were saying, oh, things are improving, but then if you actually disaggregated the data, black women's unemployment rate actually jumped. So that's kind of what he's getting at, where it's, you know, we don't want to say that economic recovery for some is economic recovery for all. So in a let's talk about another essay from economist Kyle Moore. It's about stratification economics. And traditionally, I think people think of economics as how to best allocate scarce resources. That's sort of the initial puzzle. But from what I understand stratification economics is a way to explain economic inequality that looks at how different groups of people are separated or stratified in a society. And the essay starts out talking about how we need to actually look at all of economics a little bit differently in order to address and solve these issues. Absolutely. Yes, I think that his essay is really shocking. Yes. And I mean, the entire book is pretty shocking. It's just facts to be Frank. The facts are pretty bad, so we need like way better solutions. And his assay, I really love it because he lays out the facts in a very clear way. Like this idea, for example, that the racial gap in earnings or in employment is due to some sort of education and skills gap, is something that we should actually question, right? And this is very much where stratification economics comes from. There are structural factors that essentially limit opportunity from the very get go. And so how do you then factor that into someone's quote unquote individual decision to maximize their utility? And so the way that he thinks about stratification economics is that he says, look, it should be used to evaluate the structural influences that impact the U.S. economy at the intersection of race class and gender. And the economists that I've really pioneered this, who have sort of said, look, racial injustice is in the DNA of America, we can't just ignore it when we're talking about the economy. I also feel like it kind of looks at the economy more of as like a living thing rather than like a machine and you put X in one side and why should come out the other side. But of course, it's messy. It's like a living organism, all the good and bad that come with that. That's exactly it. That's I love the way you describe that. The economy is living, right? And one thing that I loved from my microeconomic theory class was that, you know, my professor said, you know, not every efficient market equilibrium is a fair equilibrium, or welfare maximizing equilibrium. And I think that that's a really poignant point, right? This idea of like, yeah, you might have the market workout an efficient outcome, but that efficient outcome might be completely unfair to different groups. And I think that that's what Kyle's es ultimately gets at that. The way that the market is constructed currently, you know, the economy is constructed currently is unfair to black people. So we need to think about ways to mitigate that. And one really interesting solution comes up in the book and the essay of William darity junior who yeah, it's very well known economists often called sandy darity. Doctor Derrick, he talks about reparations and an economic Bill of rights. Talk a little bit about those two concepts. Yeah, so reparations from the perspective of doctor dairy's essay says, if you are African American, meaning that your descendants are formally enslaved, African Americans, then America definitely owes you something and they owe you money, right? This idea of the entire economy was built off of the slavery system that existed, then segregation, then Jim Crow, and arguably the prison system, the prison industrial complex. And so all of these things compounded upon each other have made folks who are not black, lots and lots of money. And that's why it's incredibly important that folks who are looking to mitigate the economic realities that black Americans are facing disproportionately, think to reparations as a possible way to do that. Yes. And he brings up the statistic, which is very stark, which is he says, one fourth of white households have a net worth of more than a $1 million. So a quarter. And 4% of black households have wealth of more than a $1 million. Yep. And he like directly ties this back to slavery to the systemic racism in the U.S. and how that's played out in markets and housing and everything. And he also talks about, you know, the economic Bill of rights, which he sees as a program of universal benefits guaranteed to all Americans, and so the way that he breaks that down is that everybody gets Internet. Internet is something that connects us all, but it also connects us to opportunities, specifically economic opportunities. And so we need to think about bold solutions that address those disparities and get at the root cause of them. Anna, you put this book together, you gathered experts from all these different fields and collected these essays. I'm wondering what your takeaway was from this project. Yeah, so my takeaway really boils down to three words. Oh, actually four. Listen to black people. Seriously. Like, listen to black people. And when I say that, I mean, black folks have been saying a lot of these ideas for a very, very long time. You know? And the truth of the matter is the best outcome for black people is a better outcome for everyone else. And that is the biggest takeaway from this book. Whatever is happening with the black American community in the United States is indicative of what is happening to those who are most marginalized and in my opinion those who might become marginalized in the future. And so it's incredibly important that we use our policy solutions to gear them towards the black American community to ensure that they have the resources that they need to thrive and live in incredible life in the American context. And a gifty apocalypse edited the new book, the black agenda, bold solutions for a broken system..

"Situation when she think it definitely was stressed. That was a huge part of it. But you know the other thing that was happening was that i was eating foods that were jacking up. My glucose and i didn't know it. Which foods were you doing that. We're having that effect that you're in. You're able to see this. I would take it by when you start measuring your blood. Sugar is one of the most. It's the cheapest things you can do. Gives you the biggest information it totally is. I mean i can't believe what a difference it made for me. I'm sad that it took me so long but I can say that time for our listeners. i. I hope that this is a challenge that you'll accept that you'll look at your glucose as well but here's some of those foods that i was so surprised to find out where causing problems for me. Sweet potatoes. I would get a glucose i'd go from a level of about eighty up to one hundred eighty when i hate sweet potatoes legalzoom's especially chick peas. I love us. And i had us a few times a week and it was making me. So spiky why would pretty amazing definitely fruits so apples. Grapes are probably the worst offender. But there's a lot of personalization here. That's not true across the board for all people that was what was true for me. I know for apples from me. Because i know what happens to my blood sugar after them like. I've never been able to eat apples with this. I mean this. This is all part of a bigger point which was what she measure improves measuring is such a key part of this process. So perfect timing because you're going to be giving everyone the blood sugar guy that you've created i'm going to put it at. Jj burcin dot com for slash. Dr sarah guide. Because i think we have so many things that we put together the earth with us that i have no idea so. I know that we haven't done dr. Sarah guide yet. There are a lot of information to on the books. You definitely want to want to grab women food and hormones yet. Another of these amazing books. The doctor sarah books you want your library. Just walk us through what they're gonna find in that guide. Y'all so the guy is really designed for people who are looking at their blood sugar for the first time and so i walk through how you can use a commodore. If that's what's in your budget is also walk through what my recommendations are in terms of numbers. That's what everybody tends to want to know and we were talking about this earlier. you know. it wasn't just that. I had insulin resistance. I was pre diabetic and a lot of that was related to hormones so not just insulin cortisol that stress hormone that tends to cause problems with insulin and it was when i was measuring it regularly that i could really see the effect through these experiments of what i was doing. So that's what helped me dial it in better than anything. So i talk about some of the ranges. You know the the rangers that you hear from your mainstream. Dr fasting glucose seventy to ninety nine. I don't agree with that right. Like optimal is seventy to eighty in terms of cardiovascular benefits. Seventy to eighty five in terms of having a normal glucose insulin response so the thing with prediabetes is that somewhere around eating apes. ninety percent of people don't know they have it so that's where testing can be so helpful. Yeah wow that's incredible. This is great information. And you're right. It's the big challenge when you get these monitors that you don't know what you really should be looking for. So and the other key point. I want to underline. Is that you said earlier as you're really finding out what works best for you. You may find that you're fine with sweet potatoes and you know or not it all is about customizing it in. That's what's so great about having these little things that we have now. The apple watches or a rings and cgm's and all of these things because we can see what's going on. Yes we're all tracking pretend this ascension employing point because you know the it is all about personalization. The work i do at thomas jefferson university as the director of precision medicine. It is about. How do we personalize a plan for you. This idea. that there is a one-size-fits-all that's really. That's not the future of medicine. The future of medicine is that we personalized and we figure out okay. Here's the food plan that really works for you and it's with these devices. These wearables like continuous glucose monitors in the trackers that we can really do that. Dial so cool all right j. virgin dot com slash doctor. Derrick guide grab women food in hormones and thank you so much for being on. I will make sure that you're on sooner you. You were so hard to pin down. This last time. I think is like i had to go search for where this was cast because was like a year out. I've been waiting all right so pretty hunt you down sooner my friend and iran just want to remind you to grab that blood sugar guide. It's free and you can get that at. Jj burcin dot com for slash. If you wish. It's the fourth tuesday of the month and that means it's time to hotline and welcome in one of the most respected barbecue journalists in the biz. A bar because under show a hall of famer to say the least you can check him out on his side. Derek riches dot com we welcome back derek richest. Hey der nagara. how're you doing. I am fabulous. And i am excited to have you here for a couple of different topics to talk about. Let's pick up where we left off with robert moth. Dr robert i am. I talking with doctor. Derrick riches by the way not by a long shot not by on tried you could have said yes. Everybody would believe you away you go. You never have to answer it again. I know if somebody said. Is there a doctor on the plane though. Even if you weren't you would leap into action to help out foul comrade. I mean loss sitting there sulking and not helping anybody. How dare he but nevertheless let's start with some of the barbecue hall of fame stuff As i mentioned we're gonna be revealing the three inductees tomorrow at three pm eastern here along with park so as you peruse the list of. Let's call the nine finalists. That make it through the big culling of names and this year. I believe there were sixty five unique names. That were tallied. I think it was one hundred. Sixty five one hundred seventy total votes so there was a number of folks that got nominated more than once or twice however you look at it so as you look through that names list. Who's standing out to you or what you think of that list and then ultimately what three would you put it. Well first of all. I'd like to agree with you. Know dr moss had to say earlier and that is that the you know the the three that got nominated issued. The three new ones certainly kind of big names legendary people. that probably should have been recognized. A while back My take on the list. Is you know it's got a lot of great people on there. I'm going to go with. I think it's just rodney scott's year i think he deserves to be there and certainly you know it's a big year for him. Regardless so rodney. Scott i think on solomona throw it to Leeann weapon because i think that you know. I think it's her a she's done a lot. And you know it's good to see that kind of representation and needs to be reinforced and just kind of from my own a working in kinda history barbecue and traveling and stuff I'd like to throw it to all the gates. Oh right so we can obligates. And within and rodney scott is derek. Riches picks so we'll see unless the list. That's good those are you're a. Here's what i say you have the balls to say. Then it's good enough for me. Not only as robert moss sulking away on the fuselage of an airplane with people dying. He won't even give me the names that he voted for. I mean come on. What is he doing there. I am throwing names doing surgery or helping people that's right. I mean he's worked quickly working his way off the show i was. I figured we would maybe talk about some other subjects here. But then look at you posting about this best or most popular barbecue websites. And i'm like. Wow that's not you know i mean there are certainly great website on there but yes it's not necessarily reflection of best. This is most popular most popular analytics. People think that goes hand in hand. How do you differentiate. I don't look at the top ten songs right now. Are the top ten movies. Top ten tv shows and i think you'll find that many of them are not what we would call best tim. What was it kardashians. Earn season twenty. So best show and most best and most popular are not necessarily the same although. I think there's a really great really great sites on this list and you know it was about three months work getting this together. As matter of fact my intention was to release it At the beginning of the month kind of four memphis for him smith for may as arguments brunt sort of thing but I wanted to run a back over with some some analytics people. I know to really make sure. I nailed it down as best is absolutely possible. So you know. So what's the impetus for this. I mean it doesn't appear that if people read it they casually read it. Like i did and just about popular and.

one hundred rodney scott Scott robert Derrick rodney three Sixty five robert moth robert moss Leeann this year more than once patrick Riches three pm eastern three inductees sixty five unique names Derek riches first

"That sandy your turn. It's i if for those. That might not know what that even is You know again. Google being the biggest library on earth. You wanna make sure that your practice is actually what we call index again. I go back to the librarian. Analogy where those little index cards for those that. Remember back. that's how you found a book it was alphabetically filed. And you go look for book. And if it was index it was in the index that means the book was in the library. Well google doesn't doesn't need to appetizing because we're you know we're online now so you just plug something into the search field and look to see what google serves up on what we call the search engine results pages or the cerps. So you wanna. You don't want to leave it up to chance that your website has been indexed in the big library of google. You wanna make that happen. And it's really easy to do that for our profession because we're a local business where local small business so google. My business is an index specifically for a local business. You can put any kind of business. But for local businesses it absolutely shines. So i think it's google dot com slash business. I think there's two three ways you can get to. But just google google my business and it's going to come up and you want to see if your Practices actually listed there. And if it's not you to make sure that you do list it and as soon as you go to that site you're gonna walk you through how you need to do it and several tips on that. First of all you need to verify there may be a listing for your practice. There that google put up there because somebody did go ahead and review your practice before you actually listed your own practice up there all of a sudden. There's a listing for doctor derrick glover but maybe they spell the d. a. r. y. l. or d. a. r. y. l. ellen. They they put your name wrong because it wasn't it was. It was a patient doing a review and they were doing their best to spell your name correctly but they they didn't they didn't realize it but there may be a listing for your practice up there but it has incorrect information. Google does its best to fill in the information. The library does. Librarian does best to fill the information. But so you wanna take control of that and what you wanna do is if you're listening is already up there. There's a way you know there's a place for where it says. Is this your business. Absolutely you click on that you start to fill out the information if your practice isn't listed yet you know you you go ahead and list it and it gives you so many opportunities. You're going to have to get practice verified. I think before you can completely fill out the listing. I'm not sure about that. But you need to get verified in order for you to be able to start responding to the goal reviews etc so go ahead and optimize. That listing what i mean by that is upload images of europe practice of the inside of smiling staff members. You know get their permission. And of course patients get their permission. do a video walkthrough show. Would it means you know from the from the point of view of a patient. Give them that warm comfortable feeling that. There's nothing scary about an eye exam. Show them the brands. It's really important. Gary reminded us of that too. How important it is to make sure that you're listing the brand names..

Historically Black Colleges' Contributions to the NFL with Dr. Derrick E. White

"On this week's program historically black colleges and universities and the NFL with Doctor Derrick white in black America in their celebration of the hundred year. It was not as historical as we would like right. I think the for better for worse college football who celebrate the One hundred fiftieth year and in conjunction with ESPN primarily. Done these series of documentaries. That kind of documenting the game so they did a great set of talking about the early game when the Ivy Leagues Dominated College Football. Right you get that kind of Astaldi. Nfl is not so much right. In their part of Wigan's law says that the integration the reintegration of the. Nfl in part is done. Because you know teams WanNa move to the West Coast Right. They WanNa play in Los Angeles And that the black community the La said no in particular forced the L. A. Don's to say if you WANNA come in you. GotTa you gotTa desegregate Your Team. So woody strode gets an opportunity to play and Kenny Washington gets a chance to try out for these teams and they make these teams in the NFL so we were talking about the kind of reintegration of of professional football as the National Football League celebrated. Its first one hundred seasons unbeknownst to many sports fans the NFL didn't have any African American players for decade from Nineteen thirty four to nineteen forty-six. There was an unspoken agreement between owners to ban African American players today. They are two African American general managers for minority head coaches and one chief operating officer for the first time the crew for sue both fifty four had a record number of minority officials of the seven on the field five for African Americans the contribution of historical black colleges and universities. Acc use to the NFL has changed the game forever undrafted by an NFL team. Paul tank younger was the first African American player from grambling State University to play in the NFL when he signed with the Los Angeles Rams in nineteen forty nine the first African American drafted in the NFL draft was jaws rooks. I running back out of Morgan state in the Eleventh Round. One hundred and twenty fifth overall by the Green Bay packers in nineteen fifty one doing super bowl fifty four week in south Florida Group of area high school athletes had an opportunity to learn about the rich history of black college football and his contributions to the NFL and Black America spoke with doctor. Derrick wide associate professor at the University of Kentucky. When I was teaching a class on sports history I found that the students knew nothing about historically black college role. They were as part of their assignment. They had researched The histories of sports history at various institutions and students had cookman in Florida. And I knew that those are really successful. Athletic programs and students came back with nothing. And so I've you know I just thought chalked up. Initially students being students that they just didn't do enough but when we both begin system. I realized there was a huge gap in the scholarship. And there's a Lotta work on sports. History is a lot of work on college sports especially college football but there was very little nearly nothing on historically black colleges And so at the time I was at Florida Atlantic in so I was like Bam. You is like right up the road. Well you know eight hours away from my house but I and I knew Jay. Gator was dominant. I'd heard these stories from my uncles and I knew he was a fantastic program so I did a research trip and I went up there and they have the archivists there. And the the library's at up in Florida were amazing and they gave me these materials in there. All these letters documents and so I had budgets and letters of professional teams and I begin to understand how he organized his football program because the issue is discussed our Pamela Day. That there wasn't a lot of research money. A lot of research recruiting money not money budgets. Within Coach Gate. There was the ad coach basketball at one point. And those things. I thought those kinds of stories and that the greatness that the success that he was able to produce was Willie Gallimore Kim. Rowley Bob Hayes. I wanted to understand how that was done. I didn't WANNA chalk it up to that. These were just natural athletes that there was something being done happening on these institutions in some coaches Were better than others and so I wanted to tell that story talk about. Integration Immigration had a positive effect but it also had a devastating effect on also African Americans going to the NFL right so an integration was boom for professional football. Right then you know one of the reasons that Jake was so able to be so successful especially early on in the forties and early fifties that many of his former players gather degrees and became teachers in the high schools. All across the State of Florida and North Georgia. And so he would. They would just send him letters. Like hey coach gay. Got This really. Good kid this Willie Gallimore guys pretty good right. Like this is how he got recruiting information was from his former players but those players were talented but there was no professional football opportunities and so when those opportunities really begin to open up a specially after nineteen sixty when the AFL comes in then professional football now creates a new opportunity for black colleges in small colleges in general and so that becomes this boom and on the backside that the course the civil rights movement is happening at this exact same time right so brown. V Board of Education. This is entire push to desegregate schools Whether the high school level colleges etc and so so many ways why colleges Kinda caught between their own. Their success right. They're producing these great players in the NFL. Minium all pros as we talked about earlier. Thirty two or in the NFL Hall of fame at the same time. There are new opportunities at Florida. Miami or Georgia and that these schools especially in the deep south are slowly trying to recruit them when you look back at the history of ACC using his contribution to to the NFL. I found it amazing and the one hundred year the League. There's very little that has been articulated about a SPEC- US or the early African American players and they and their celebration of the hundredth year. It was not as historical as we would like right. I think the you know for better for Worse College Football who celebrated his Hundred Fiftieth Year and in conjunction with ESPN primarily. Done these series of documentaries that kind of documenting the game so they did a great set of documentaries talking about the early game when the Ivy League dominated college football. Right you get that kind of Nfl is not so much
