"Rim missed the layup, Simmons nearly came up with an office hands. They had the perfect play. When you see the highlight, you're gonna say, Dude, How did you miss that? Right at the front of the rim. But that's about Joel and be who shrunk. You can go from 71261. At the front of the room. Uh, he didn't have anything like honey. I struck the center that didn't happen. They ran the perfect play. You got to the front of the room and got it. But those are the kind of things that are using motivated gathered Joel and be Joel. Embiid is a very prideful guy, and he hates being embarrassed. Even with any kind of injuries gonna look at that and say, Man, I should've made that bleeping layup. I'm right there. Here's another problem. 76 is losing What Doc groups have to say about blowing a golden opportunity tonight. Guess what you've done. You've given the Atlanta Hawks confidence again. They were not a confident basketball team. When they came out tonight. They really weren't it went from a six point lead the 10 point lead to a 15 point lead than an 18 point lead. They were not a confident basketball team. With the Philadelphia 70 Sixers did was give a team confidence and it is true confidence is dangerous when you have it and dangerous when you don't and a guy like Trae Young is always confident. He could be down by 100. He believes I had a couple of three points and get this lead in the 90. We got a chance. That's that's straight Young's mentality, and everybody follows that lead and follows that mentality. That's why Doc Rivers said. Man we got. I worked the whole bleeping game because he knew we had a chance to end this series by Wednesday and get some rest. Now this series goes close to the weekend. And who knows? Maybe even beyond that to a Game seven and Joel Embiid is a little more injured. What happened in Game four? He's not going to get any healthier between Game four in Game five. I'm Freddie Coleman on Freddie and Fitzsimmons presented by progressive insurance, making it easy to bundle your home and car insurance because of contracts. "In the East 70 Sixers taking on the Wizards 97.5. The fanatic takes us to the third, such as Donna Capital, One Arena and it be download with right hand chair. Again, Joe Well to the left of the lane. The double comes but late be blows by Bacher and then on charging Westbrook and well now is 21 2 matches number indeed had 23 points through three quarters of play eight of 11 shooting, then Philly up 78 to 60 in the third. Beat down low. Look out! He dunks it! He goes down hard. And he's holding his knee in Pete is down on the floor in Washington and the sixes need to take a foul. He went up. Garrison Matthews came over and Joelle took a terrible fall. He's holding his left knee with six minutes and 20 seconds remaining in the third and beat hyperextended his knee after coming down off of that dunk. Eventually, he got to his feet and walked off under his own power. Sixers head coach Doc Rivers on what happened? No, just felt awkwardly. You know, I thought there was a little contact when he went up to dunk. The ball. Thought he fell. You know what? His balance off? You know, I'm not going to speculate. You know, tomorrow we'll know we'll have all the information for you. Um, you know, hoping for the best. Yeah, I did talk to him using the locker room. It was in pretty good spirits. "Down, one using a screen. Beat em. Beat goes hard to the rim missed the layup. Simmons nearly came up with an office hands and out of bounds. Atlanta Ball with seven seconds to go and be just has no left. I mean, there's no How does he not finish that lay up? Very interesting question and inaccurate question from John Barry, along with Marquez Fisher with the call on ESPN radio, how injured he is Maybe he reaggravated something. I have no idea. But now we got a series and now I can't wait to see how Philadelphia is going to handle that, especially in Doc Rivers sent the message. I'll get to that message right here on Freddie Fitzsimmons. I'm Freddie Coleman on ESPN Radio, the ESPN app and excellent talent. 80 Keep weighing in on Twitter at Coleman, ESPN. Don't forget the phone number as well. Triple Eight, say ESPN. 8887293776, speaking of John Barry, who had the called mark rest assured on ESPN NBA radio. Check out what he had to say on how the Philadelphia 76 is either let it get away. Or the Hawks called it a comeback. Well, I thought it started with the way filly came out in the third quarter of 13 Point lead and very lackadaisical. I didn't like their disposition at all. A lot of jump shots, a couple of sloppy turnovers. Atlanta got it going defensively, There wasn't the same focus. Atlanta exploited the paint, which they didn't in that first half. And they allowed the team to just get some life and get some belief. That's why Doc Rivers was heated. After the game, he told reporters, two things number one. My eyes told me that we blew a golden opportunity tonight. But it was the second one. I guarantee you got under the skin of 76 is players and it should, he said. The Hawks outwork this six. The Sixers quote the whole bleeping game. Unquote. His team had an 18 point lead. And Doc Rivers said Yeah, but we were getting I worked. We're supposed to be doing that to them. Not having that happened to us, especially how we were able to outwork them pretty much the entire fourth quarter in Game one. The majority of Game two and pretty much all in Game three. I'm sure Dr looked at his team and said, I can take it. A team is better than us. Without working us, especially at 18 point lead. Hmm. You wonder how much of that message is going to be received? And if anybody's going to deliver that kind of message is going to be Joel and be Joel and be went Oh for the half, meaning over the quarter in the fourth quarter. 4 20. He had 21 rebounds normally have 17 points. 21 rebounds. That's an outstanding game. It was awful. And then he had a point blank shot. At the rim Atlanta leading at 101 to 100 less than 10 seconds left Paris to inbound gets.

How Joel Embiid Became An MVP Contender

"Also derek. Last season ended in pretty disappointing. Fashion for philadelphia. That'll do it. The boston celtics move on by defeating the seventy sixers. Four games to nothing. The first ever went wrong in that first round against boston for embiid and the sixers. I think a bunch of things went wrong. First of all. You can't start without saying this. Ben simmons zone. Outside of that sort of what went wrong was wrong with the sixers all year. The team didn't fit well yet. Al horford and josh richardson. Who were tough it's around a post op center and embiid. Richardson shooting for three ended out. They didn't have a real reliable second often times during the series alec. Burks was your secondary options on offense recipe. Brad stevens and the celtics and bead romeo leg for the rookie thinking about double vacates birds. Who can't make them pay. So there is a lot of mistakes that were made roster building and there were missing. Simmons isn't it was a tough series for sure. Can you remind us what the narrative was after that first round exits surrounding joel embiid and his performance. Yeah it was fascinating because on one hand when they came back into the bubble they had spent pretty much those months in between working with you all to get better at handling dull teams and it came out in the bubble in orlando during the seeding games and some of that had started to show and he looked like he was handling double teams better and he came out against the celtics. And i think that he converted back a little bit in terms of struggling with the double team and bead backing down ties gordon hayward on the help and they come up with the steel but he was dominant as an individual score. That was locked off and be. Did it again. Safe focused joel. Fb five of seven. Give him thirteen of his team's thirty one. We'll lifesaver on that. So i think a lot of people looked at you made steps. He did most of what he could do individually. He just didn't have enough help around him. Well that disappointing end to a long season led to a number of changes within the sixers organization. Can you take us through. Some of the moves that philly made in the off season and how they related to unlocking the better performances from joel. Embiid is off the front office. Obviously brought daryl morey To work above. Elton brand and then they brought in doc rivers replace brett brown and then you had some pretty key addition to traded al horford for essentially danny green. And then josh. Richardson for steph curry. And i think those two editions have been pretty big with joel. Because i think if you look either trade you'd say the sixers got the lesser talent but the fit and just having to players in curry and green. Who the other team can't leave has been huge for. Joel shoe autom- double wall and pass. And you miss accomplish you. Miss a lot of shots You just straightening and then you start thinking of all you gotta do everything by yourself. 'cause everybody's not made the shots. Richardson horford they were not only inconsistent shooting. If they are unwilling shooters and they'd hesitate any office. Which is kinda come grinding down to a halt not only is curry making his shots and all these green making his permanent shots. But the ball is moving around the perimeter. Much quicker than it was. So there's more consequential doubling joel embiid than there ever has been monarch got a lot of assists but Ogle gets one us open. Invite double or triple team has a lot of hockey else's shake milton hinton to downtown ten points and ten minutes off the bench make no mistake that play which about drawing the double and then the ball moving east gotta be willing to be content. That the ball's the swing opposite and he's gonna creative for shots teams are now left with a real choice whereas before i think the whole strategy just send you all need help and disguise it a little bit senate in different locations but if you send it frequently enough you're going to confuse joel embiid or the sixers aren't going to have the talent or the players to make him pay. I think that's changed now.

"Take away its shooters, and they're up 18 points on the road. Even the fans. I know it's typical that you come out of a second half, and the Lower bowl is like one third empty. It felt even more empty tonight. Like all right, it's been a great season. We'll go get him next year and then Atlanta chipped away hit those big shots got into single digits. Next thing you know, they got the lead. Now. Philly did take it back, and it still felt at that point. Atlanta had missed its opportunity. And then the way things unfolded in the fourth quarter. I agree with Doc Wholeheartedly I could see I could hear him saying that, too. It was very good assessment. I'm sure there were a few other words in there that didn't get in the transcript. Doc went anti church comes to with some of the language he had for the press and the zoom meetings once this game was over. It's interesting when you look at this series, that's too too Brooklyn Nets. Milwaukee Bucks That's due to if you asked anybody last week, we have seen this going in both game fives that these stories would be taught people so not the Nets are either going to sweep Milwaukee or beat them in five in Philadelphia's gonna be up 31, and they're going to take care of that series. But you made a great point in terms of the healthiest team Atlanta right now in Milwaukee, a lot healthier than Brooklyn and the Philadelphia 76 is how much of a stress that put on Steve Nash without James Harden and Kyrie Irving in one series and Doc Rivers within Joel and be who may be more hobbled than he was the beginning of this series. Right? And Danny Green. It was not available tonight, either. I mean, just another day, uh, not just another, but a defensive part and leadership also Getting guys together, you know? And Ben Simmons, who didn't also have that great body language tonight, and Mr Whole host more free throws in the game. Yeah, I'm with you. I think I might have said that toward the end of the broadcast to us. Who would have thought just a few days ago. I thought Milwaukee was toast, You know, and they were fortunate to win Game three. And that was a great win for them yesterday Yet Kyrie went down. It's a lot to ask. Kevin Durant is going to go down as one of the all time scorers in NBA history and the role players that they've had have really stepped up from the Bruce Brown's to the Blake Griffin's Don't know if Jeff Green is 100%, but they're going to need him to be as close to that as possible. They do have the home floor. But it's it's a lost a lot to ask Durant. I could see Durant having a big game, but how many others will um Milwaukee seems to have the momentum here and on the other side. Just don't know what we're getting from. Yeah, from Joel Embiid in Game five. I wouldn't put it past the 70 Sixers to just toss away a bad game and a game where they just didn't play right in the second half. But it is a completely different scenario. Just a couple days later and who would have thought in the West yet a sweep and If Utah comes back tonight, you look at a 31 on that side. Real quick Broadcaster in studio, ESPN NBA play by play voice on Freddie Fitzsimmons and ESPN radio. I want to go back what you said about the bad body language that you saw. I'm Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. How do you have bad body language when you have a chance to really put a stranglehold on the series, especially the way they are you able to play in Game three. Not that long ago. I'm trying to figure out why would the two stars that you need Have bad body language in the game, which they could have taken control of the series. Yeah, and it was my read, I'll you know, In my opinion, it looked bad to me could have looked good to someone else. But it's hard. It's always been hard for me to read and beads body language in game because, you know he's giving so much effort. I know he's laboring with the knee, but it just felt the whole game every time out, plopping into the seat. The reluctance to, you know, play with force down the lane. But you're right. The greater question. I don't have the answer for it because you have a chance to go up 31. You know the other series is to to you want that rest? The conference finals right now would start Monday. But there's a chance it could go to Wednesday. So you would like to have all that time to rest up. So I don't really have the easy answer for you. If indeed it was, if you agree with me that it was bad body language. It was a very bad loss. Yeah, either way, if you Philadelphia man, you let one get away. If you're the Hawks, you were able to make sure it did not get away. And now we've got a 22 serious. It was a pleasure, Brother. Cats give it a great work. I'll talk to you soon. We'll do it again..

"All nine playoff games this year. He's two for four at the line tonight. 21 points 18 assists his team up one. First free throw Good, at least eight of 26. How about Bogdanovich and Trae Young or 17 for 50? From the field. They've taken 50 shots as a backcourt. That's a ton of looks. Doc Rivers, arguing with the official that came after the play J B word we're getting from the sideline here. Young two free throws with 49 seconds to go. Atlanta with a three point lead. 11 10 98 over Philadelphia are Sports and information group telling us If the Hawks would win the 18 point deficit would be their largest comeback victory or would be the largest comeback when in the last 25 years. The Atlanta Hawks. And right now, at three point lead with 49.6 to go well, you certainly have to credit a team for you know, playing hard to get down 18 you don't give up. But Philadelphia it's just played right into Atlanta's hands. And, uh, I can tell you, Doc Rivers is going to be extremely disappointed if they can't come back and get this game with the way they came out. To start the second half. It really set the tone. For Atlanta to have some belief that they could come back and do this. I mean, Trae Young eight for 26. They're shooting 36% from the field. And they're beating you by three points. That shouldn't happen. Atlanta has three turnovers in the whole ball game. Yeah, it's quite a remarkable game with all these numbers, but again, Joe L. M b. I don't know that you see them Go four for 19 very often. No, not at all and has been absent in the second half offensively. Trio of NBA podcast hosted by Zach Lowe, Brian Wind horse and Adrian Jordanovski joined the conversation wherever you get your podcast, so it only has two points in the second half. Ben Simmons. It's always a question mark with his foul shooting. Are you looking at here for Philadelphia? Offensively? Well, maybe it's to buy his hair if you can't get him beat on the interior. Seth Curry has it up top against hurt her 45 seconds to go down three to envy, driving, lost the handle, picked it back up and got fouled as he hits the deck and be nearly lost that.

"A relationship like greg papa bids in our beaufort yes danny ainge in myself. steve kerr and i can't think of their gm's name right. Now you're gonna win and so that's what you try to get but it helped me. I need much tougher for you. Going from running the movie to take. Because you're good at both. I wouldn't get it being a gym. That's right well. No that's a great bit of self knowledge. There are things that there are definitely jobs. I don't wanna do and there. I wouldn't want to run a movie studio. I know that i would hate that job. And i probably wouldn't be that good at it. So i completely relate to that. I want to be able to make the things and not do that other piece of it. I've three three more questions. i'll let you go one. Is you by all accounts raised. Just an the want. The kids who who's awesome who's famous is obviously like people always talk about. What a good teammate. He is in a great kid. He is and everything. I mean. young men now. Not a kid anymore veteran but how hard was it to be a coach on the road and raise a kid and also you know. I know you've thought a lot about you you. You didn't have the kind of privilege that your own kid had. How did you balance all that stuff. And i remember when my son was ten. I had to stop coach because i realized i don't want to put all my basketball dream kid. So how did you manage all of that stuff and raise a kid who's able to achieve. It's such a high level. I didn't until he was a pro. I did a conscious thing very early. I'm made a conscious choice. I'm also gonna if mites basketball or by other son likes basketball great. I'll get them to every event. And i'm going to sit in the crowd and i'm going to be a parent Parents need to be parents. Parents need to be the kids cheerier since they need to try to supply them with whatever they need a core in all that and then back off the funniest one was you know when nelson goes the duke coast. Chaos me now. I have relationship only for austin. And so i'm still coaching offers. Were just talking the asthma austin. Where do you think of. We ran this roster. I said i don't know. And he's like little you know. I said i'm the parrot. Oh that's great that's great you did. That's an amazing moment laughing parent which parent on the pair right back off. Because you didn't want to be responsible or enter into that head and analytically about about your son but even more complicated is coaching. You're you're coaching your son in law. Now right y- feels like a lot of pressure to me man. As a father. Coach of the in law feels like a lot of pressure. Yeah but i don't know that feels like 'cause you don't want your daughter call your daughter having a call. You seems bad. it's funny. I just those one that you're coaching awesome. It's tough because i think if you do coach in the pros yourself you have simpson's you wanna hope one is. He's the best player on the team or a worse clarity also in the mill. Yes and it's very very difficult even so much easier. If he'd just been the worst by that you never have to play them or the best that you gotta give him the ball every time right but in the middle guys. He's right below right above always going to feel suffering and so i thought that made it very difficult but also with your son you're able to have a for real joke and you're able to have a different conversation with your son but with your son in law. It's almost like you have to have a conversation of some sort like you got to write. You gotta have some kind of conference which helps in these such the one thing i'd say it helps with seth sefton. Easy right for sure. No that's for sure. Yes i mean do think about it. You really worked. He can into work school. You have to go to liberty college and then to do. He goes undrafted even the nbl at the time the g. league now He gets cut three and four times and now stratified. You deal unbelievable. So so yes. His work ethic is beyond question. And so i guess as a coach. That's what you're you have that you know you got a guy scrappy and working his ass off to deliver you so that helps two more quick things. One is quick the other one is did coming out of the whole experience of the bubble the whole experience of the social justice questions now being this social justice committee it does in the way that people in america you know the fans of the league stuck with the league in so many ways does it give you any cause for optimism. The way that your speech was received the fact that the president of the united states was going around the country saying you. The new president was using your words. Oh yeah know on social media. I'm like the big. I am basically doing everything. I can to get trump to call me. I just wanna fight with the guy hate him. But i really i can't. It's just drives me crazy but mean we have a fascist dictator trying to pull off a coup but but biden going around using your words. I basically what did that feel like to you and did that. Give you cause for optimism. We're does that. give you. Cause for optimism in felt cool. I love to say. I got calls and people you know from all kinds of people that are people you know. You might might my favorite well. There's a couple of favorites. Tell me but you know in jonah blind again back on the saudi. Did david beckham rower. I did a dm from him and a big just people like that because they've had so much success yes so that was a cool moment and all that for me. The optimism didn't really come from my speech for me or joe biden using my speech. My optimism came from sitting in the back of the players room that they invited me to come in and speak to them. Yes and listening to them. Figure out like. I wish you could have been there that first day. It was rolling motion in anger and they were going to shut them. Read that we're going to do everything like they have thirty things they're going to do and the next realizing we can't do thirty six just twenty four hours a slipping on it and get their emotions now and revising oral. You can't stripe your partners because nba owners actually partners didn't that your opponents need your partners to something together to make something great and in twenty four hour period watching that young group. That's what the optimism for me.

Molly Fletcher On How To Negotiate With Confidence And Ask For What You Want

"Today's feature molly fletcher was named the female. Germ aguire on cnn. She represented some of the biggest names in sports and she's negotiated or five hundred million dollars in contracts. She negotiated contracts from hall of fame. Baseball players to golfers to professional coaches. Like doc rivers. she's in featured an espn forbes. And of course sports illustrated. She's the author of five bestselling books including her latest one. The energy clock and she's here today to make sure you feel confident. The knicks negotiate anything in business and for many of us. You're negotiating everyday all day. What i love about her approach is that it's simple. It's to the point so it's easy to implement so when wanna pass an awesome alibaba back to wrap up today's episode and give my takeaways but for now tick away molly. Hi it's molly fletcher. Founder of game changer negotiation training and author a few bucks that one. I want to talk a little bit about today. A winners guide to negotiate him. I was a sports agent for almost twenty years and worked with some incredible hundreds of professional athletes coaches and broadcasters and so for almost two decades. I pretty much negotiated every day almost all day. And what is you know a pretty competitive environment like most of of our worlds. And so you know i. It's doing that for almost two decades. You begin to see a process that works. And i transitioned out of that business about ten years ago and now speak and write books and of course we have this training company game changer negotiation training. And and what. I've learned is that most people assume negotiation is really just reserved for certain jobs. Sports agents were lawyers are sales people or whatever but negotiation is increasingly. Part of everyone's job and and the reality is we must master the skill to be able to grow in business to be successful and continue to evolve in our own business careers. And you'll yes. You may or may not negotiate deals. But i would encourage you to sort of expand the thinking around the word negotiation and recognize that it's about negotiating resources and vendor contracts. It's about our time our energy. Who's on your team and not on your team. What projects you choose to take on or not take on you and then of course things. Yes like your package and the list goes on and on but to me. The opportunity to negotiate exists all day. You know it's all around us several opportunities every day irregardless of the roller regardless of the role that you're in so you know but but here's the problem. Most people aren't trained in negotiation and so they're laughed with kind of anecdotes and gut feelings to guide them through the negotiation process. And you know as a result. I think people lack confidence and leave negotiations feeling frustrated because maybe they didn't get what they want and what i wanna do is walk through the some of the mistakes that i often see. I'm gonna give you guys three today. Some of the most common mistakes. I see people make and and really what to do instead. I have a list of about five if you go to five negotiation mistakes dot com. There's there's more. But i'm breakdown three today so you know to me want number one is not knowing who you're negotiating with not knowing who you're negotiating with. Most people think and spend a lot of time thinking about how they show up and what matters most to them and not enough time worried about how the other side shows up and what matters most to to the other side and so you know i'll give you an example. I negotiated for decades with a general manager. And every time we did he was always really difficult to connect with he was just. It was tough. And i'm sure there are people listening that that have people in your life that you negotiate with it or tough to deal with it and this guy was that way and every time we'd have these conversations i just felt like we were missing each other and we were a little bit disconnected. And you know. In retrospect after doing the work that we do now and looking back what i realized as he came to the table kind of as a financial guy right. That was the way he showed up. He was only worried about the financials. All he cared about was what was his payroll. Look like right now and what he was going to have to pay my guy and what we were worried about. Ucs that matter tusk but matters even more at this stage in and this clients career in this athletes career was direction of the club. That you who who was going to be the manager of the club. I mean there was things like that that we were a little bit more worried about an and and so we kind of found ourselves disconnected particularly in this one particular negotiation that i remember so vividly and that was because he was showing up worried about one thing and we were showing up worried about another and and and when we can better prepare better understand what matters most to the person that we're negotiating with the more that we can drive connection and the truth is the more that we can connect the more that we can keep the conversation going at hopefully come to a resolution and what we've learned what we teach is that there's four styles negotiators. There's financial strategic logistical relational. So we all show up one of those four primary types all have a little bit of all of them but but no different than you didn't decide to be left or right handed. This is right or wrong. It's just maybe default sat up so you know the financial persons worried about money in the bottom line. The strategic is kind of worried about the long term benefits. The logistical worried really about terms and conditions. Right the relations worried about the people and so you probably can recognize in think. Yeah you know what. I'm i'm pretty much show up in one certain way and maybe spend some time thinking about some of the people that you most often negotiate with. And what what do you think. They're sort of common default mind says and so understanding how you show up in what your default if you will. Are you want one way or the other more one way or the other and then learning to listen for the things that matter. Most to the other person that can create Find kind of common ground inside of these conversations. Go back to what matters most to them but also be fully prepared to to navigate the conversation and adapt at times to drive connection based on the person you're negotiating with to me. The best negotiators are really curious problem solvers and they know who their negotiating with and they know what the other side values show spending time and energy getting clear on on how the other person shows how to adapt to drive connection. How you show up. Polygraphed dapitan dr connection. So i would encourage challenge to pull back and say you know what do you think your default setup as an and how you show up and then think about some of the people you negotiate with most commonly and how do they often show up negotiation mistake number. Two is not knowing what you want. I mean this crazy right but too. Many people go into negotiations without really being clear on what they want and the result is they ask for what they think they can get not for what they want and they end up with a deal. They didn't even want show. So we have to spend time and energy getting really really clear what we want. And you know your ass doesn't need to be a big issue. You consider everything that's on the table and and know what you would be happy getting in what you would be fine walking away from you. Ask for what you want. Not what you think you can get or what you what you think the other side will give and the only thing that i think is incredibly important you ask for what you want and given. Hopefully you've built a strong relationship in advance of your ask but is make your ask and then pause you know one of the mistakes people make because they they don't pause so ask for what you want and then sort of zip it right but the worst thing that that can happen is the other side says now but if you build a strong relationship it's okay they're not gonna walk away right. Think about no as maybe the start. Not the end of the negotiation if you go to gain changer. Three sixty dot com. We have a resource. There tab resource tab and there's a tool. They're called the e walk and it's not the star wars character but it's ewc and it stands for everything what we want whatever options and what are we willing to concede but you can go there. Download the tool. It's a deal preparation tool really and what will allow you to do. Is to get really clear on everything. That's in play. what do you want. What our actions. What are you willing to let go off.

How Will Stan Van Gundy Fit With the Pelicans?

"Was a few weeks ago in the ringer NBA show that at the very tail end of the show I recall you saying. Keep an eye out for Stan van Gundy and New Orleans and since we last spoke That came to fruition Stan Van Gundy was hired by David Griffin and the New Orleans Pelicans I think when this all started with the pelicans ouster of Alvin gentry. Through the. Face Tyler had a former relationship with David. Griffin, we talk about my Tony possibly because he had a former relationship via the Phoenix Suns with David Griffin but they do land on Stan van, Gundy as their next head coach when you saw that news come across the wire, would you think great I'm happy I think he could bring some accountability to the team in terms of how much they need it on the defensive end of the floor they were horrific. On defense this season in San Andy. Of course, infamously famously I'm not sure once said build an effing wall and that the Pelicans need to do and I look forward to see what he can do now that he's back in the NBA but by the way like he failed in Detroit because he was coach. Angie 'em now he's just a coach right and he was always a good coach. He was good basketball coach and it was one of those cautionary tales of. It is two different skill sets number one it also in many cases can be two different motivations right if I am if I am the general manager and the coach now let's say I make a poor signing or a poor usage of money will sometimes I may want to use that guy to prove that I was right about this guy right and I know that you Still get into that with with a front offices and coaches anyway, right in in everybody wants to be responsible everybody wants to be right about the move they made. But when you then you're not doing the scouting of every other team on a regular basis, I know you have scouts you're certainly not doing that with college, but it's just a very hard job to do twofold and. Another cautionary tale of taking that over I mean everybody wants that power but I think we've seen two of these guys. Now fact three of these guys. Now, all of which I think you would say were subpar to very below average in that role but. We respect them as guys that are on the sidelines as basketball coaches. That is their expertise in that is doc rivers who took on that role Tom Thibodeau who took on that role and Stan Van Gundy who took on that role and yet got hired as coaches though it didn't go well at their last stops. I mean doc better than the other two but we thought. Hires because these guys are good basketball coaches who were miscast trying to run everything for sure absolutely and ultimately it's another good opportunity for him when New Orleans area there even though they have Zion, they have ingram granted these a restricted free agent. He'll likely back matched any offer sheet or whatever This is still sort of A. Team right now that can go in many different directions depending on how David Griffin wants to build it out and I look forward to seeing the ways in which Van Gundy, Utilize Zion and the ways in which he tries to get him going off because remember you know before all the three point shooting, we've seen the last ten years or so that has. Exploded with the warriors and the rockets and all these teams shooting lot of threes, the magic, Dwight Howard at center and four shooters around him in the late two thousands with anti head coach and they went to a finals. We're going to be lost to Kobe and the Lakers The had some good run they some really strong teams and in with Williamson. With the New Orleans Pelicans, I know they want to add another they don't want to go like all small Wall. With Zion at the five all the time it's it's just went to work but I, think van Gundy's pasts and what he could do now with this roster, it's kind of exciting to think about the possibilities with the different ways in which they can use ion but most importantly though and again, this is like with all the coaching hires we talk about I am more interested in the personnel changes who they draft, who do they try to trade for? Who Do they try to sign I am WHO's coaching the team, but you know I'm excited to see if they're able to get. Zion, going and creative ways that they weren't able to do as much during the season despite his success he posted up a lot man I. WanNa see some more pick and roll with Zion I wanNA see some more creativity with him, handling the ball and running pick and roll, and that will largely come from other personnel changes that come to the roster that allow that to happen. But Hey, man SVG had success with some different types of teams in the past and I look forward to seeing what he can do here with him, and that team has a good roster they under performed badly. Made sometimes teams underperformed because you look at their roster and you go man aol have the goods like that team underperformed I. Think so too. I think of course it I mean look I mean Lonzo I think Lonzo hit one shot in the bubble well, even though they're young that defense was bad even though they had good individual defenders, they've jrue holiday one of the best perimeter guard defenders, Ingraham and Lonzo. They were good defenders of the Lakers. They were the last two years. They were good. They were not good defenders last season with New Orleans. And Zion I, mean he was horrific. He was so bad on defense. It was it was really sad to watch. This is the guy who is blocking three point shots closing out from the opposite side of the paint at Duke just a year prior, which is why people wonder how much of it was fatigue coming back but season how much of it was the injury limiting him how much of it was effort I? Don't know I don't know what it was but regardless. He stunk on defense, and all of this needs to change next season for this team to be anything that have any chance of actually getting into the playoffs it can't be all

Doc Rivers was set to take break, says he 'couldn't turn down' opportunity to coach Philadelphia 76ers

"A week after Doc rivers in the clippers parted ways the sixers introduced rivers as their new head coach yesterday docks that he wasn't willing to coach just anyone but the talent and Philly made it a tough opportunity to turn down. That was gonNA coach anybody I can tell you that I was ready to take a break and. It just depends on the team that was available, and if I thought that team in my opinion was ready to win. That excited me and when you look at these players as young players and their potential. The fact that they've had. So much success in some ways at the age is that they are already. And where I believe they can go for me is is a job you just couldn't turn down. and. That's why I'm here. Certainly a loaded roster Zach Thomas still here with us with Steven you're up first at the end of the day, which is the tougher Doda to coach. Do you think it's PG thirteen and? Or would you go in beat and Simmons for dot? To to me, it's a Koala MPG. It's a tough. It's a tough situation because of where they are in their careers. Your I if you are a wild linnet, you're a two-time champion, the two time NBA Finals MVP portly. You're a bit indifferent as a personality. You're very businesslike approach. You go out doing what you need to do as it pertains to doing your jobs your job but in terms of galvanizing the troops around you, that's not Hawaii. Limit is you search around you talk around NBA circles that's what you consistently here in the case of. Paul George Obviously Paul Georgia's one of the more talented you know two way players in the NBA. He's a star, but unfortunately in his postseason career particularly, this postseason that was not the case and if your doc rivers and you walked into that situation, you got guys the veterans they're established stars they've got set in their ways. They believe there's a certain way to do things and what have you, and as a result, it ended up being an incredible challenge particularly when you consider what doc rivers had to absorb once Leonard Arrive Kawhi Leonard Arrive. At once Paul George Wounded Forces the clippers to trade to form in order to acquire Paul George because that's the person that he wanted to play. He wanted to play with he was GonNa practice what he felt necessary use GonNa take games off in terms of game you know load management when he wanted to he was gonNA play when he wanted to during the regular season of course, always available during the players but all of these things assist to what makes life difficult for coach particularly when you have ownership making these kind of investments that's problematic in the case of New Philadelphia Yes embiid, and Ben Simmons are young. And you gotTa get a Ben Simmons to shoot the boy only attempted seven three point the entire season last year Joel embiid attempted one, hundred, seventy two. So one guy needs to get the pulse more and stop having this big backside on a on the perimeter and the other guy needs to develop a perimeter shot. So he could be much more of a formative formidable threat, but they both incredibly young they both got a lot of promise and a lot of future. Ahead of them and they able, you know they're trainable to some degree as opposed to be definitively set in their ways because they don't have any definitive set ways that has really really worked for them and I think that's the difference. That's why I'd say it's it's tougher to coach. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George at this stage particularly for Doc rivers and what he had to deal with last year with the clippers then it would be for him to coach Embiid. EMBIID. And Ben Simmons.

Boston - Patriots-Chiefs Week 4 Preview

"We are joined now by sports NFL analyst Michael Vick Michael What. Do you give camp in the Patriots against the chiefs this weekend Got A shot. So always a fifty, fifty chance to anything can happen in. The New England patriots could be the first thing that upset the city chiefs this season but a couple things are gonNA have to happen. The defense is going to have to come to play, and unfortunately for the past, there's only one Stefan. Gilmore. On a fail the other corner nefer right side opposite again was not step up tremendously and try to somehow someway lock down the trio receivers. The Kansas City chiefs has that. Pretty much ran right though on Baltimore Ravens last week in the Baltimore Ravens headed great secondary and I watched them go up and down the field with ease and. It was because of the speed that they possessed. Throughout combinations and the play call them angry they made that game so difficult. But in terms in their pages, ball control is going to be essential. Whether this cam running back back admitted, they're going to have to control the clock, keep the chiefs off the feel as much as they can and try to score as many points as they can. But I think the biggest Kansas game is just winning the game time possession a not length touch Rome's get out and be as dangerous the threat he's GonNa be because you can't stop Patrick you can only hope to contain them. Anger going to let him loose. In as as a team, you've really gotta find their rhythm early if you donate New England. Patriots said, I think that's GONNA be in the run game they have to control the clock down to control the town possession in keep Patrick mahomes on Saturday next avery.

"Well, the clippers are not the raptors the raptors we came into the raptors it was like a perfect storm like everybody on that team. Kind of slid into a role. It took lower a little bit of time to get there, but he did eventually get their crm new his role in that team Baca Gusau, they knew their roles nineteen. The Clippers didn't figure it out this year they had guys that didn't know their roles that wanted bigger roles that maybe didn't understand the whole load management part with Kawhi like there was a lot of. Inter Inter issues. With that team I don't put that on doc I. Don't think docs should have been the guy to. Cut a blend together this team to make it a championship team to absolutely guarantee you a check now next year. If you didn't do it. Full season you're out that's it but next year. Howard. Is I think it's not personally the most important season history of the clippers franchise like if they don't get to the finals. And Wind up losing one or more of Leonard or Paul George. I. Don't know what they are for the next decade they've all their assets away. They're kind of middling playoff team with nowhere to go. So it's to me. It's a pretty big gamble to let go of a proven coach in Doc rivers when you enter when you're entering the most important season of your in your franchise history. and. You might find another coach who's maybe better at certain aspects of the job or you know maybe maybe there you know what? Whatever it may be practice routines. Civil Xs, and Os out of bounds plays whatever whatever category you want to check. Let's say there's something that you're going to get in the next coach. That's better than what doc did buy some degree. You're still also losing on the other side of it. One of the most definable and powerful Personalities Charismatic Personalities in the coaching ranks and that matters in this league. Yes. There are some more I would say demure personalities Brad Stevens we're just kind of fades into the woodwork and Frank Vogel. Is kind of that that. That mold to there are guys who just kind of Taylor Jenkins in Memphis like these guys who just they're good game managers. They're good with the players whatever but they're not larger than life personalities and I think that at times in this league, you need that you need the credibility and the the powers of persuasion that come with. A Doc. Rivers who not only has the championship ring and the playing experience in this league..

The Los Angeles Clippers Have Fired Doc Rivers

"Another myth another legend was fired Bob and I don't you were shocked as I was I, didn't see this coming where Doc rivers we had on the podcast you and I are both huge fans of doc as a human being as a coach. I don't. I. Don't know where I stand right now. Obviously, he is blown some big leads the latest being one in the bubble. Denver and with a team that let's face it. Steve. Balmer paid doc rivers big money to win a championship not not be eliminated by the Denver Nuggets in the in the western conference semifinals so Valid or not valid to let doc rivers go. I knew that we all knew that losing another three to one was not a good thing to have on on anyone's resume to do it twice in. Three years. And the do it with this owner as you said, who invested the overpaid for the team I think even by modern standards that teams are worthy he he got a little giddy with his two billion dollar plus purchase of the clippers the Lakers we could see but not the clippers. So okay, he's invested in this and I worried about it a little bit but I didn't think it would happen. I thought it was a possibility of Steve Bomber angry. But, I, thought it was an of course couching it. It's mutual ha you know coming out of the usual walk away from that money it's the modern. Thing to do that say it's mutual nationally I felt badly because I am very proprietary to a doctor and I have communicate with him already. But. It's understandable that an owner. Successful businessman. Odyssey's bomber is a highly successful with that investment. I I don't know what I don't know Jeff is the level of his own personal basketball acumen. I don't know how much he thinks. He knows he knows more doesn't knows more than that part I don't know you know. Here's what I'll tell you about. Here's what I'll tell you I. Don't think this was all Steve. Balmer. My guess is Jerry West who they pay a ton of money as a consultant. Okay. As a consultant. Yeah. Good point is Jerry West played a significant. In this move and now the question will be. What what's next in the big thing with doc and you and I know this we've been around enough. Great human being great communicator. But the biggest words that you would hear from players about doc dating back to the Celtics was a little bit of a Country Club, right? It's it's easy doctors a practice much. Older players veterans love, them. Again it's where you want to go to and the latter part of your. Extend Your career. and You wonder if that played a huge part here because certainly the clippers didn't look like there were in tiptop condition in the bubble weather. It was Knox fault whether it's back that mantras Harrow had a death in the family and didn't come into the bubble too late whether it's a fact that Lou Williams left the bubble and came back the Patrick Beverley. There were there were a lot of issues. But ultimately. It. Probably does follow on doc in a sense that you had the pieces you had the pieces. You shouldn't be watching if you're the clippers, you can't be watching the Los Angeles Lakers right now compete for

Doc Rivers out as Clippers' coach, after seven seasons

"The LA clippers parting ways with head coach dot servers yesterday. Some would say it was inevitable after the way they collapsed against Denver many had this team winning the title. Don't even get to the conference finals doc did issue a statement yesterday thanking the fans and calling it eight disappointing end to this season are nick after seven seasons. Doc Rivers out as clippers head coach surprised the team made this decision. Surprised it took them a week or two weeks almost I. Felt like it was either going to be immediate or it wasn't going to happen. But while everyone respects dock and everyone likes dock and everyone's going to focus on the three one series loss third the most the only coach ever with more than one. Here's I. Think the biggest. Indictment on Doc rivers, not just this year but his with the clippers. And people aren't going to believe this but I promise it's true. Frank Vogel has won as many playoff series with the Lakers as doc rivers one with the clippers. Thing about that. So it wasn't just one year of underachieving, it was a better part of a decade of underachieving. and. So the question is, will the clippers get a better coach I don't know if they will. Tie lose going to be the obvious thing. We can talk more about that later but Jonah the real reason they did this in my opinion is because they were stuck like the brandon they don't have a good secondary pitch here they I know you would said, keep collide dock and Paul George and blow the rest of the team. I don't know if the rest of the team has that much value I think the only real shake-up you could do is trade Paul George whose values the lowest it's ever been or fire the coach I don't know that they had another way to shake the snow Globe Brandon. So I think they made the changer not for the sake of change, but because they had to change something and this was almost the only move they could do.

Of NBA Dare Yeah Mark Jackson respect Mark Jackson, that's my friend. That's the homey and he's a great coach. How many tip is just Mark Jackson win as a head coach Y'all get rid of my assistance. Okay. Says Promoted Assistant this Greg Cosmetic says rid of the sisters and this liquid goals air and says, well, I'm not sure these better culture not then when he won a championship. So if you're not certain that he's less of a cold so much championship level coach. The you getting rid of DOC RIVERS TANK A. Say would get off the craps table step off the black table get away from the poker table like sooner or later you gotta realize this is not a winning hand and Doc rivers with this team isn't necessarily a winning coach think about this and this how we drop the MIC right here doc rivers you've bone an NBA record ten playoff series when he's been ahead Doc rivers is fourteen and twenty seven and close out game you talked about A. Coach who didn't win it in his first year. Well, let's talk about a coach who did win at his first year and Nick nurse who went with that same player Colli and you would have to argue in arguably in all honesty, what they their talented roster than the current clippers roster has. So if you WANNA talk about the one thing doc rivers has done winning that title in eight. There's a whole lot of things doc rivers hadn't done both before. And since away the proved, the clippers need to move on before it's too late. Remember who hitting the street for the clippers next year in Hawaiian PG, they can both chunk the deuce is so you ain't got a one more year to work you need to catch lightning in a bottle. Dockworkers was about to catch no lightning anytime soon. I'm about to get. Above this air was some names and Y'all keep talking about underachievement what has duck had to really work with I'm GonNa, give you a list of names that Doc rivers had to co Chuck and to ask ourselves yourself how many? How many of these guys WanNa Championship. Dot Rivers. Pearce. Kevin Garnett. Griffin Chris Paul Dr Dre Jordan. Paul George. He got his Co. on Leonard and Ray Allen. Lebron gave me some names that Doc rivers work with they were already. ARTETA.

"The nuggets are essentially ready for anything. To they've won six elimination games this postseason their last four playoff series. Even if you stretch back to last year of all been game sevens, they've done an amazing job, their head coach, Michael Malone, had corona virus, their best player Yoke Corona virus overcome a ton to get here. But I want to bring this up to you real quick and get your thoughts because it's all really about the clippers and where they go in their immediate future, July five, twenty, nine, thousand, nine. Hundred last summer as we're in the final stretches of summer this year I know some places it doesn't feel like summer but July five, twenty, nineteen, NBA Summer League Las Vegas. It's all good. We're playing. Everybody's having fun, and then an earthquake hits and do you remember that last summer earthquake? It's shut down all the Games there at the summer league and that was all the talk and then about four or five hours later, and I can say this tongue firmly in cheek. Because there were no serious injuries out in Las Vegas at the Summer League. The NBA had a huge earthquake of itself because about five hours after the earthquake, it was Colli and Paul George Whoa dropped it they were both going to the clippers. So here we are they still don't have enough to get over the top with those to a great coach, doc rivers, the expanded a year and Monterey Herald a former six of the year it Lou Williams. What else did they need? You think it's enough right I. mean every time we get to these situations in basketball or in any sport for that matter where a team looks like they're going to win it all and then they get derailed. The first thing we start doing is trying to figure out what else is it that they need what else is it that they need I don't think they need anything I think they need to change their approach I think they need to realize in the regular season yeah. Kawhi. Leonard gets rest in you still win games but if you want some sort of continuity because you pointed to that in the postseason Post Presser saying that you guys didn't feel like you were in sync and hadn't played a whole lot of basketball together. Well, you need to change that approach. If that is truly what you believe, you need to change that approach because it certainly worked when Kawai was in Toronto he won with Nick Nurse Coach I mean. So how does it not work for you? In La, I think you gotta look at the XS and Os certainly the willy in. There, they have the players to compete for championship. There's no question about it. So if that's the case. Why aren't we really focusing in on Doc rivers in the situation like you mentioned earlier. This is his third time. Up Three one in a playoff series that he loses. In. About Doc rivers because of all the respect that we have for him everything he stands for we love about Doc rivers. If this was any other coach with this type of talent in this situation, we would be you know doing some dirty work to him right way maybe. You, guys get all he needs to do. Is Take some time off reshift his focus figure out what it was that he did wrong as a coach in get the players to fully buy in. So they could try and make a run. To, dethrone the Lakers of the twenty twenty championship that they're going to win in twenty twenty one. Okay. Put that altogether caller calling it. The biggest beneficiary of the clippers collapse are Brian win says it's obvious. Lebron. Has Been Given a glorious opportunity. The bucks are gone. The clippers are gone. Those are the two teams that we fought for months where the teams that we're going to give them problems. All right. He is holding in his hand a chance that fourth title a chance at that winning that title with that thirteen putting another banner up at staples legendary status as a laker going forward. He's gotTa take it. He could play another three years of the Lakers and not get this opportunity again whether it's the clippers or or heat or whoever every honest goes or whatever happened. So his eyes are wide open on this one he knows. So he's gotTa. Take it took. That's not even Brian's great with that but that's already took. He was GONNA do that. Even if he had to go up against the Clippers e, he knew that coming to, La. It was going to be crazy amounts of pressure for him to deliver a world championship it just it. It's just what it is you the greatest player in the world you got the purple and gold on the fans and the people of L. A. Are Starving for another championship haven't had once Kobe Bryant and on top of that everything that we've gone through and twenty twenty, you being a part of the team when everything happened to Kobe and you coming out and saying, go put all this on. Your back we expect for him to deliver a championship. There's no question about it and I believe he's going to do it alone with and the rest of the cast of characters. So this could be as tens appearance in the finals if he can get past the nuggets are Charles Charles. Barkley was joining our program a couple of weeks ago, and he essentially said when we asked him after the nuggets were gassed outlasted Utah that game seven what percent chance do you give the nuggets to beat the clippers and he flat said zero so we're not going back to chuck because he was wrong. So I'm GonNa ask you percent chance that the nuggets can beat the Lakers zero zero. I'm a double down Chuck Zero now. Can they? Can Aid spook them yeah. They could spook them. The Lakers have lost the first game in both series that they played this year I mean in this playoffs right and they wrote they could certainly spoken. But then when you look at, you look at the situation with the Lakers, you talk about in head to head matchups season alone the Lakers are up three one I just don't think that they have enough especially from an offensive standpoint with the Lakers defense in all of the big bodies that we can run at the joker. I. Mean we run a Deity. Dwight Howard avail at him I. Mean You know he he certainly in my opinion is not quick enough in in as far as his feet movements is concerned to get past them if he brings them out from underneath the basket to blow pass them in a long enough to defend the long shot. So I, just look at what Frank Vogel done from a defensive standpoint in the bubble a tremendous job. The defense has completely made a hundred eighty degree change from the regular season to what they're doing the bubble now and then the Brian James Factor..

"Were asking is you live up to the constitution? That's all we're asking for. For everyone. Back. Mike Ryan STU gods has been saying for a COUPLA days now because he's jealous that I write essays for television soaked in Hbo Real. Sports. and Tom Rinaldi. He has said that he's going to write an essay and he had the perfect opportunity yesterday to write a mess say about Leeann L. Messi who was in the news because he's transferring it's an it's a monster move right? It's. It's Michael Jordan switching teams are Michael Jordan even bigger than paint manning, becoming a free agent and us. Following him with helicopters messy changing teams in his early thirties would be like Michael Jordan doing okay. I was going to say Tom Brady but he did it in his forties so. Extremely rare in soccer because the topline elite athletes usually picking your landing spot if you're forcing a transfer out of a handful of teams try to decide. Okay. We're can I get the most money out of this like three teams that can afford the transfer fee? This is reportedly a free transfer. You had an exit clause Barzan Messier fighting over that because the language for him to exercise clause said June but he's Like the season didn't end, it's an offseason clause and there's a pandemic. So there might be a fight over that. But messy has his pick of the litter and you could justify paying him crazy wages because you're not spending millions upon millions for a transfer fee. It's a pretty unprecedented for a player like him, but it will still be a big story tomorrow correct like that's that's gonNA carry a couple of days. A stab at writing a mess say today this afternoon you're not you're not. He threw throughout the idea. It was a great name for it. Right? He's just hoping someone else does it for him well, you and we'll see if you get it done this afternoon I will deliver it tomorrow morning. That let's do the normal thing. You go rough draft show like the slightest bit of effort. Again, I'll come in. That's all takes for Mike. I show him just a little effort little pen to pay cuts at a Mike Fills in the gap we've been doing for twenty years around here. It's like the whole. The whole thing is constructed to do that for you. How Do you think your profound laziness? It's been rewarded I'm a guy he just likes to get the ball rolling Dan. You know you don't want be roll the ball out for you. What happened with the cigarettes person record book I just wanted to buy from you. Want your thoughts to. Who are you want your thoughts to immediately result in direct deposits? That's how you involve us an idea guy I throw ideas out there therefore the group and if someone like to execute the business plan together. That stand for the group therefore you it's to enhance your lazy character into not doing anything but looking good and looking like he's doing some Pie, throw it out there chum in the water. So wants to bring me a business plan. I'll cut you out and bring it to an invested. Just throw a draft and we'll massage it and it'll be great and it'll be your voice. You'll get praised just do something that's it just plan just far out a seed and I will fertilize it. This is how we've been doing it for twenty years I. Don't understand why you're just noticing this now. Hold Prediction. Of this now, we're a mess say tomorrow Oh wait a minute. It's funny that you should say that Mike because when's the last time that I bet him something that was fully under his control and I ended up winning the bed anyway. Was it the color of his car color Vince car o you have total control and I bet you one hundred dollars eight that you wouldn't do it because your wife didn't want you to do it and you couldn't do it and you got the other car. What's the bet right now I bet one hundred dollars that there will be goat eight, my computer excuse tomorrow you will not get the seeds of anything on a message saying I mean I just laid the groundwork for him to send me just two sentences. What is the bet? No, it's got gotta be more than Matt for me like you gotta give me more than that. Not something he can dictate into his phone on the way home listen to decide what's fair. I think one centers is actually Joking. Tyler graphs I will give you a lot. Let's paragraph I mean is that two sentences six? Is it four I? Mean you're asking for? A minimum of ten sentences for say a no matter how much is misspelled in it? Okay. Matter how lazy it is yes. Billy. What you have for us here it doesn't know Ted sentences worth of messy anything though like what is he going to say about messy at ten sentences nobody's okay. Got It. Do not count like weekend. where it's like Lionel Messi Mike Reid a joke here for me. That's that's getting the ball roll I mean. Said Billy just wrote a sentence I. reminded. Teams as he been on messy. Yes. Messing signed with Barcelona when he was a young boy. So he's this is a huge deal. This is a tragic day for this is Babe Ruth leaving the Yankees. Okay. So this Because Babe Ruth was Babe Ruth like. That's a hypothetical scenario. This is this is unprecedented per player of that elite talent Tata's pick of the litter it it it's it's massive so much so that I still don't believe it's actually happening. Graham Wall tweeted out that he still thinks most likely landing spot is still Barcelona that there's to be some sort of makeup. Did you see what happened the new manager like? So Nfl Sal, the days of your privilege are over messy. Messy facts out. Let, me faxed it in you have to fax I was like who still uses facts, but it's like legally you have to fax, you're bound by it so it can't be a computer signature in email like legally there are certain documents that have to be faxed in. I did not know that I did not know that in twenty twenty Messi had to actually send a fax. He had to go find a fax machine it could not be a docu signs situation. What I wanted to ask you this because. I was told that on a call a couple of weeks ago Inter Miami, which has had a disastrous start in every respect not just pandemic everything has been disastrous soccer should work in this market soccer has been trying to work in this market for a long time. We are an international market. If you were to get messy, it would be an enormous enormous thing that would immediately because this town is all about the shiny sparkling things make soccer matter in this. City in a way that it never has if you were to get messy, they are targeting him however. I. Feel like that's everyone in the League in the NBA. Saying they're targeting Jaanus like, yes of course, everyone is targeting Jaanus Before this even became news inter Miami was targeting having a conversation about targeting messy. They've made no secret about that. MESSI was even a part of their introductory video and Messi sort of publicly flirted with this idea Beckham messy to. Sort of like Lebron and Michael Jordan and Adidas has an entire contract with MLS. Messy is not coming mls unless Adidas does something wild and now it's all funny money and bleeding into WHO's actually paying messy messy molasses. A realistic thing in Inter Miami's a realistic thing and a couple of years as messy steams ever won anything I'm sorry I'm asking you seriously. Think he has three Champions League trophy. World. Cup, though he made it to a final, famously, Stu gods has been writing things down this entire segment. I feel like he this is the most effort he's going to pour into the mess a right here he's written like five or six notes down, and he just interviewed you instead of checking the Internet on what Messi has done while on air we're doing the radio show we need the content it's a seismic sports, move students doing his research in segment by just listening to my..

"This is the Dan Lebatardshow with this to got spot casts. So we've got NBA players possibly boycotting the playoffs nick nurse has talked to the raptors about that based on what happened with. Jacob. Blake in Wisconsin. Being shot in the back several times by police officers in front of his loved ones we've got. Billy wondering aloud whether we just witnessed. As a sports community, the saddest, no hitter in the history of no hitters might just learned right now that there was a no hitter the biggest star in the world though he may be a fraud according to Stugotz Is leaving. Barcelona. We'll get to that in a second but the first thing I want to get to is What it is. You were arguing about before the show I couldn't tell what the argument was. Was it the best I in food for taste or was it the best I bite in food for sound I could not tell what you guys were arguing about because it just ended up being about Oh a delicious hamburger. Oh, a delicious hot dog but it started out his toast and I thought you guys were arguing about sound not taste. What were you arguing about? Roy Hijack the game because billy took a bite of toast and we heard it and we were like in Tony. Iro like what a delightful sound. So we just start saying what is the best sound of bite you can take of all foods and Roy Kinda shifted the game he said baking crackling on the stove, which is a different game, the best sound of preparing a food. So those are the two games we've been playing this morning I think Roy's game is actually easier to play outside of toasts Ryan. ABC Some cereal maybe potato chips there's not a lot of foods that have a good sound when chew them. Roy. Expanded the Game Roy's game is a better game. It's just the best food sand in general either that's a much better game to play the best I. Bite the best food sound in general and for me it is, Bacon cooking pan. Okay but now you're not doing I bytes anymore. You're just doing the sound of something and basically that sound wouldn't mean anything to you if it wasn't accompanied by the Smell Now. The smell is the thing that get you with cooking bacon or sound soup. The slurping sound Paul No, that's totally. A top three sound for me like Abbott Toast is number one and outside of that a soup slurp. Great are you kidding? I don't think most people would put soup slurp in their top three sounds that food make. I'm actually more interested Chris as you've. Tried to carve a path for yourself a career in radio expertise do you go to sleep at night thinking how to make these conversations into arguments because I felt like I was listening to the show as you guys just made it the game of first bite sound you realize very quickly toast is going to win. There's not going to be second place because apple's not gonNa feel as good as toes, and then you just pivoted into well delicious foods Mrs My wheelhouse has everyone gained weight during the pandemic I share have, and then you started gambling about how difficult? It is deed cereal while you're watching television. So I'm just is this the merging of your world, your career path in a pandemic and food you're like, yes, I've got something to talk about today i. mean this is like Improv. I hear things come at me and that's how I react Dan owns Mike called stugatz fat. I say we're all fat billy took a bite toast. I hear the sound I'm like, what's the best food sound I'm just like it just goes in it goes into my brain and my brain cooks it up and then it comes on my mouth. Which game where we play? The game that we're playing, it might not be playing games in the NBA boycott. We'll get to that in a minute, but this is a slightly more important at the moment before we get to any of that who through the No hitter I've been watching get up and I take for it like an hour and a half, and I haven't seen any mention of it. Well, I'm hoping we don't get to any mentioned messy. Because I heard you talking about Suarez and Messi before the show, and if I don't hear another syllable of that the rest of my life, I will die. Happy. Let me ask you something when when you do that whole bully about soccer thing and you cut your ear to I, guess the establishment white man from the nineteen nineties. Are you proud of yourself? This is the biggest sports story in the world I I'm not. With the actual story I didn't know my that. No I'll shut up about the biggest in the world switching teams my bad. I apologize to all of you including you Dan who took serious events. I JUST WANNA point out to the audience and it's not soccer that's annoying. It's you. Get your way of. Your specific way of discussing soccer. Like legit apology. I was over give you. Having real conversation about soccer not this on air thing defending the merits I was talking to someone who was also interested and you were eavesdropping route of you by the way to bring that on you I was eavesdropping but to in my meager defense, I only started eavesdropping because through God said welcome back cocaine Mike because of how fast you were talking about the. Things you are passionate about this up I I'm glad you may. Mike, Francesa. Proud today with your very original take again, I want to tell the audience and all you soccer's zealots out there. This is not next soccer zealots sap referring to us is GonNa shut up we just like the sport, what is your problem and I call them cocaine, Mike, and private I mean. welcome back to cocaine Mike. I was not objecting in any way to soccer or a huge story, a huge international story. We simply objecting to the way that you discuss it but getting back. To what we were discussing, we'll get an update from billy soon on the status. No hitter. Did, we decide that toast is the best southbound that food makes period upon first bite..

"I honestly taught looking at NBA coaches in players I. Actually Hope Somebody Shows Jerry Jones that doc rivers video because if at this point in time after everything we've seen if you still need your players to come to an anthem compromise that tells me that you have not been paying attention that shows me how much privilege you have to not even be. Affected by what we're seeing, it shouldn't take like Dominic said, it shouldn't take a black man getting shot in the back seven times. It shouldn't take a black woman being sprayed with bullets in her bed by police. It shouldn't take cops me on a black man's next for eight minutes and forty six seconds for white NFL coaches white NFL teammates to say. I, see it I. I understand now that you're that that the black people that I know that their lives, they live their lives differently they have to they have to understand certain things. They have to move a certain way and for Jerry Jones I mean it why was drew brees dragged this off season because he he didn't understand that talking about the anthem. Just takes away from all the issues that people of color talking about right now and Jerry Jones I. Really Hope he watches that video and other people because of Roger Goodell he can have all the conversations. He wants to have the uncomfortable conversations with black people he wants to have but clearly, there's a disconnect and he doesn't speak for all thirty two owners. Are saying. I don't know man. You know we we talked about fear I. Think. What. People don't understand is that becomes anger. You know in Kimberley missing mentioned having uncomfortable conversations not not accountable to have a conversation when you make forty million a year when the system is set up for you. Don't matter how much doc rivers cries. Jerry. Jones is not going to be a billionaire. He's not going to be white. He's not GonNa have the same friends running the same circle that he already does and you know you are right Greenie. I think Dominique Kimberly I like we all understand it on an individual level. There are good people. You know they're they're good white people, black people, Asian Mexican like we understand that and then. When Colin Kaepernick began his protests it wasn't to fix a system that is broken. It was to try to change a system that works perfectly for the people it was built to work for. And Win Doc rivers is crying. That's fear that's anger. That's hurt and everything that he says is one hundred percent. True. He and he said he should just get to be a coach but that's not just his responsibility. His responsibility is to coach. His responsibility is to parent. His responsibility is to teach is to educate not only other young African Americans but educate America about what it is to be a black man and it's not just what it is to be a black man. I. Got an opportunity to speak. At a talent whole here locally last week, and you know I was supposed to be one of the speakers that people could listen to and people could ask questions to and I ended up moving off the panel to the side to listen to other activists to listen to other people who had dedicated their lives to pushing the plight of black people in America Ford and what I learned was. A different level of hurt of murder of evil of discrimination of racism. Just within the black community. Right, we can talk about black men get treated a certain way black women, the most devalued gender or people on this earth who are always standing for black men who are always taking care them but yet are undervalued or devalued at every opportunity that people it. For. Black Trans. Women to be dying at an alarming rate but nobody's talking about it. Like that's the, that's the entire thing like we're just talking about social justice. We're talking about being able to stop a fight and go check on your children. Right. We're not talking about being able to walk into a church, South Carolina and kill nine black people. We're not talking about being pissed off about not had about having to wear mass shooting an AK forty seven that cops and being subdued and taken for your. Day Court. See we don't get those opportunities so we don't get those opportunities you down right? We're fearful but we're also angry and we're also hurt and win the Detroit Lions get together and they make a protest because don't get don't get it confused what the NBA doing a demonstration right now the organizations have taken control of the demonstrations of the protests, and now they're saying we would allow you to do this, which is why we don't talk about what? Happens pre-game anymore because what happens pre-game anymore we're used to what happens pre-game now is like, okay they can do this y'all can do this y'all can have this the reason we're talking about what doc rivers did because it was real because it was from his heart the reason we're talking about what the Detroit lions because it was a step away from the normal and because the normal is black people getting shot and US continuing to live life. That's the normal the normal me having this conversation I had with you guys about Jordan early on in the year and still having to have the conversation. Now a relive it because you're trying to give me to tell the story. So people understood it was like to be a black father that had a black how who was dealing with being called the N. Word who was dealing with racism who people would threaten weaponized the police in hopes that people would stop killing black people understand what's going on actually give some frigging help. But what you insane is that the people that ain't GonNa Change Ain't GonNa Change. And as long as we're in the system that is working perfectly for the people that are supposed to work perfectly for nothing will be changed. Because see now that they can control the demonstrations now that there is that now that they quite it's. Quiet at some of the looting, quieted some of the protests and change some symbols they feel like they don't have to change the system. And because right now we're trying to figure out this election. We're trying to get people to vote that people to understand vent their vote matters because it starts at the top. Right, we're getting drawn away from the fact that black people still getting shot that we're protesting that things are being set on fire that we work in the chain rule that the NBA is talking about not playing games when these people deserve to play games because they work, they hold frequent life to earn the right to play that game, but they may have to give that up not so they can be okay too. So other people can't do. This talking about bringing his ID and bringing his phone. That's 'cause don't nobody cared that he hits harder. Because before he was Vince Carter before you stuck his elbow in the room before he went between the legs it said it was over he was born black and that's not going to change. And I want it to be calm a wanted to sit here let Kimberly talk and let dom talk and let Greenie talk and just let you all understand in and maybe bring. So points some fats. There's some issues that people could grasping hold onto. But when we are asking for other people to look at black men, so they could feel were black men field and so they can understand what black making understand dominique put it right I wonder what it's like to be white because being white not only gives you the choice of being an ally. It gives you the choice of whether or not..

"Every. White Guy in a Beers Jersey. In Knicks Jersey and he looked at me and he says Doc rivers said Yeah Aren't you from Chicago? Man I see. Yeah, he started Craig. Through the story I. Give The guy a big hug. Just walking down the street and I was like that's the quite that sounds right now. My task. WHO's GonNa win the bears quarterback competition. Some. Who Do you think well? You know who it is, but they didn't go get full for him to sit. And that's the way I look at it. Listen I think the best man is going to win, obviously, and then one thing, but nagy did you such an offensive genius I would be shocked to see them both at times, but I don't love. That's just in my life when you decide who it is, and that's who it is, but we have a superbowl winning quarterback now and we also have a very young quarterback right, and so you would think the super bowl winning quarterback. We'll probably get the not. And the other young kids will get the teach. And so in some ways you may win both ways. The way of looking at it and I think they hope it works out that when you did mention. That Philip rivers brought you into. Speak with the culture helped. Arrange that for the Ray Allen money story but I don't know the money store, so I got ask you to share the Ray Allen money in the ceiling store less stock, will it? It's a true story. We lost to the Lakers on Christmas Day in the regular season game, and when you play West East, you only played a west coast teams one time of year in their arena, and we laws and walking on the floor I felt like it was the first time. That our team was down. You just fill it like They knew they thought they were better than the Lakers. They lose to him and they were down so walked in the locker room. Why this came to me? I can't tell you, but it did I walk into the Locker Room I every player every trainer, every coach, every equipment manager to get out of hundred bucks and give it to him, and you know guys like looking around what they need under bucks. I didn't even talked about the game. Game I walked. I need a hundred bucks. Everybody on Kindergarten Eddie, you know. Kevin Garnett the greatest team leader in sports, but he has a very colorful way of expressing himself. You know the F.. Word is now verb an adjective Kevin Garnett, so he's bombing outlet. We're doing this and he's going back and for and I said I'm not. This is not an asset. This is you have to give me a hundred dollars, and so they all gave him his money. And I and there was a ton of. Money in my hand and I had my one security. Guy feel Mitch feel I want you to take everybody in the shower. Is the question you take them in a shower I grab one the system I said Hey. I want to hide this money, and he's like what I said I wanNA hide this body. We gotta figure out a place where they no one could ever find it, and so we finally looked at the ceiling panel. We felt like there's no plumbing and we put the money up in the ceiling. We closed the backup and the players all come here comes in and said. Where's the money? I, said the money got. What do you mean the money? I said the only way you can ever get this money back is we have to come back here and play and the only way we can come back here and play is we have to make to the finals? I believe you're gonNA. Make the final, and we're going to meet them here and when we come back here. We're going to get our money back and so we made it to. The finals went when we got off the bus. It was awesome you saw these. Clare Spreading to the locker. They were waiting. They I walked in that. Locker Room Strasse like. I was laughing because me and Kevin Eastman was one of my only knew where it was. We let him look for another five minutes and I got an. Kevin grabbed a broom lift up the ceiling panel fallout. I swear to God I. Didn't think would be there. I thought someone may have so little founded, and it came falling out, and it was awesome. Player the diving underground. You would think that I I'd love to get you make twenty million dollars in your. A hundred dollar bill. That's. Extra cash. How long was the money hiding in ceiling for their duck? Say Four months wow. Yeah Yeah. We played them in December, maybe longer. Yeah, we played them in December. Six months because our seven because the finals were June. But I wonder if there's any like ceiling tiles in Orlando that you have to scout out now to stick hundred dollar bills. They're inside your team here in the upcoming MVP season year. We'll we're all the funniest call I got? That story got out after it and I got a call from Gregg Popovich and duck and ask you a question with this. Sure you said you. Go into San Antonio. Locker Room said look around. I can find some money. Pop out to tell you. We only thought. The Lakers are GonNa win so no. That's outstanding. Well. Duck like I said I want to get you on. To talk about your experience of the NFL teams, and then obviously with all the events going on in the world, I thought well. This is just unbelievable to build to get him I wanNA. Thank you for all the time that you granted me today. visit time for you It was worth the wait trying to get you on the phone I. Really do appreciate it very much. I look forward. To somehow meeting on the road hopefully Gimme a clippers game at ESPN point I love doing the sideline reporting to these games, and it'll be a great honor to get one your games here while I would love that that would be phenomenal. But somewhere we gotta mid up. Maybe it was doing the rams game. We've run in each other, but I love your word. Keep doing it and all this stuff that we are involved in right now i. think doing the thing, the more we talk about it The more we speak out the better will become as society so I'm hoping we can just keep this going a lot longer than a protests. What we're trying to educate, right, we're trying to educate you and I think that you've done a great job of doing that today, and that's why I appreciate it. I'm going to find you at some point I i. don't know whether it's going to be a work assignment or whether you're going to be coming to new. York to play a game I'm going to confine you at some point in time at look forward to shaking your hand in person and thanking you for your time today. Where I'm looking forward to that, and so are here's the head coach, Los Angeles Clippers who now have to begin to get ready for training camp will be July nine to eleven with the NBA. season. Up July thirty first in Orlando and he's got so much going on and as I mentioned to him, we reached out to him before. All, these protests erupted. We reached out when. I heard he had been talking the bears in the colts, and the rams, and that was what I wanted to bring him on, and I think we're the great things.

"And probably didn't have the curse because he knew if he did speak up. He would have to deal with the rest of the police force calling him. A Squirrel and we gotTA stop that behavior. We gotta be able to speak up. If something's wrong I wonder right now if he can redo it, I guarantee you. At least you hope that he would upset it. Stop that right now. No longer the next guy. The next guy would think that because other people everybody knows everybody's seen it see you hope that if anybody's ever in a situation like that, and hopefully not that somebody, this is not right. Yeah, you do. Hope got and. There's a lot of good things like in bad taste. Think about the kid that went jogging. And got murdered right and thought that those two guys murdered that kid and then went back home like you know they were never taken in. They just told people would happen in. This never comes light. If another guy who was filming, it took him two weeks right or maybe three weeks, but something in him finally said. Man This is wrong. I got I got a tournament. I have to tournament and I guarantee you that guy. Once he turned him in. You'd think he was popular in his community like he should have been a hero. My guess is probably not. And that tells you the problem that we have. You know, but it took that guy the courage or Someone in his family may have had the courage. The solid is that. This is wrong. We got we gotta turn this thing in. We gotTA show this bill and show them that this was a murder, and so it's amazing, but though there are these acts to and of courage, but it does take courage as the father of four three boys one girl. You always deliver a message to be on the lookout your children. You have to do that. You do have to do that you know. My. My my kids are interracial and you still have to do that like you do I. I've always done that so my players. You know listen. Being Black. Especially you know I don't know when I was a player for the clippers. And the Clippers Reno was in south central. You know the clip. Worst arena probably in sports history. But if you drove I would drive the project in my BMW. I got over once a week. Oh. So Yeah you. Do tell them Hey, big nicely, so your hands I every black father does that. Every black father does that but as a kid, even with my dad as a cop when I was next to a cop in Maywood. Comfortable because in Maywood where I grew up, you knew all the cops. But when I was oak park, or you know river, force, or murals part Anders A. Predominately White neighborhood, and you got to light or stop sign of the COP next to you. You start like sweaty. And like because you wouldn't look his way you. You know how you don't want to look at them. And you know you just waiting and you know you knew if you pulled off I and they slowed down and start writing behind you. You could counter one two three four, and then the lights went off. just checking like. Did you have something wrong? And then they check your plates and then most of the time they let you go. But! You don't know where that's going and. He'll it's the way it is and was and weighed still is. On your dry to the clippers games back in the day. When you're playing for them in the early nineties in Los Angeles. When, you're pulled over once a week. Did you ever feel? Unnerved. Scared threatened. On one of those pullovers. Will you always did, but you're always smart. I think it was Lloyd Vaud or Sin Norman One of our players that. Without their car and cuff, push their heads the windshield and then let go. And, you didn't even know why quote him over why they did that, but you know there's so many of those, and that's the stuff we have to correct the stop and Frisk the but I still think like you said. I think it's the training in some ways and I just going back to the education at the end of the day like we have to educate. Ourselves and others and I do think some of this will go away and so there are some powerful words on the way. He grew up the lessons he learned from his father. And his thoughts today on social justice in racism in the world before we get to Doc rivers addressing his favourite NFL team, growing up the Chicago bears first a word from state farm with real guys and the right coach..

"Schefter podcasts. We, already pivotal moment in our country's history and I think we are making history. We are seeing things we have not seen before. We are fueling things we have not built before. And I think we are upon change. That is long overdue. On this week's Adam Schefter podcast. We will bring in a man that we reached out to a few weeks ago. The Los Angeles Clippers Hey coach Doc rivers. We reached out to him because at the time of another critical juncture in our country's history as before the. Three different NFL teams the rams, the colts, and the bears all reached out to doc reversers to bring him in on. Their zoom calls to address their team. We decided to do the very same only as we brought him in. We add in the issue. Of Social Justice and racism unfolding in front of all of our eyes. And Doc rivers was able to break that down to discuss what he believes needs to be done to help this country. Move along. And get to where it needs to be because it is that time and you can feel right now, and this is long overdue. And this is a movement that has been underway, but really did not gain. The traction should have. Back in the season of two thousand seventeen. When Colin Kaepernick and others began healing. And now it seems like this is a movement that cannot, and will not be denied. We see the players speak out or Natan incredible video that they posted last week. We saw the commissioner address that we drew brees. Get caught up. In everything that happened last week where he went from an enemy of one side. To the enemy of another side, and he elevated a lot of different people. Of course we let me take inside the Saints Team Meeting, which they have not wanted to talk about it all from last Thursday. After drew brees made his initial comments that infuriated his black teammates the saints headache. Keen cold the next day two o'clock that was scheduled anyway and on that call drew brees dot on an apologized. And Sean Payton got on and explain where he was supposed to be a great speech, and they brought on their linebacker tomorrow Davis. WHO's incredibly smart and insightful on these issues, and he delivered a rousing speech, and then they were Malcolm Jenkins. Who obviously was the one player a respected player mislead. Somebody. Who helped get the social justice movement started he came on. And basically challenged drew brees, and said Drew I. Hear Your words, but this is about actions. And it's about actions, not just for drew brees. But for the National Football League. For our society. For everybody that needs to do better and be better. About where this world is, and where it is headed Malcolm Jenkins Challenge, drew brees that day to Action. We saw what drew brees on Friday night issuing a letter to the president of the United States. There! We've seen some subsequent social media. Close from drew brees more action there..

"And it's it's not to diminish that but but it's a different sport I will agree with you. what it is yes and for whatever reason it's not looked upon that way for all we want is a reason yeah just for it to be addressed with a coherent reason why the idea now. I think in your profession of of how competitive it is between organizations wins front offices owners are competitive with each other. How much are you ever willing to share with guys you compete against. I've I've had coaches in a league who who are great admirers of yours who'd say I'd love to build a relationship with them. I really we WANNA see how he does it. But you know Miami's a little more close off their. You've been in Miami your whole career. You haven't been the different guys have different places because they've worked. If we're you know lots of people but I think there's always been a sense of like the Miami Culture has been a little more. We don't we're not opening. We're not swing our doors wide open to see you how we do it but sharing among each other like you said when you saw him at a clinic and you're going. I don't know maybe I don't not that. You're going to give something away there that he had scouted her scene. But how do you guys view that within balancing act you know I think it turns out to be relationships ships. As far as I'm concerned I don't go out my way to call share and I get calls. They get a lot of calls and so does slow but it is. You know it's it's a it's a telephone you know when you go to a clinic or something you share with whatever you're trying to share but it is a competition still too and I understand. That's another thing that I've learned. I remember we had Riley opened the door. We had a practice I had practice at your facility because rows at anticipation ship. We'd practice at your facility and we beat you. Guys and Tim comes up to me well. They'll be no more practicing at the Miami Him. Eat you know and that's how you feel like. I have things that I'll do. Anyone can practice in our facility. I'll do that but then I have things things that I am very quirky about you know earlier when I was very quirky about if I saw my assistants talking to the other systems like what are you guys talking talking about what possible conversations right now and this is are complaining about. Ah There's like I say we're not quite as iron curtain as we used to. Yeah we do open up our doors a little bit and you know we don't really necessarily go out of our way to network and kind of an introvert anyway and it just kind out of lines up during the off season. I like to go visit football programs. Just because it's different catches my interest a little bit more on it. You know you talking basketball with your staff and the other people all year long. I like seeing something a little bit different. I relate to them and and it usually ends up being not tactical discussions but it always comes down to personality management and and that's what I find you know probably most interesting about this business. What's the one or two days you guys ever spent outside of basketball whether it was at a football football facility you around ballot check in Boston spinal. You've gone all over. Nfl College football what was one you walk out of there said wow how or a dinner with somebody who was completely outside your element and said I got more out of that than I would have to for a specific reason I saw Pete Carroll uh twice just because not because he's winning super bowls actually before his first super bowl there and there's more just his personality as a so much different than me. I have mentioned I'm an introvert and I like to seek out people. That are a lot different so two years goes you know who is going to see in college. Football is going to see a Dabo swinney any and I'm friends with Butch Jones is very good friend of mine so these to compete against each other but he's such an incredible personality as man if I could have like one percent of so much better coach and ideal relate to my players better but I walked out of both of those not only amazed at thera ability to relate and just the one in nine personalities but also just how you you walk out of their thinking wow. This is my best Ashrat in two days later. They probably have a twenty five other people say to care for me as well just his energy who if you ask anyone. HP Carol Everyone's getting the wrong all coaching and there's no way you see that you know how Bella check with the one for me just because he's so different and I had a chance to speak a couple of times and I love that's phenomenal to there. I would always go to their offense of meetings right before the game I would he gives you great access and you would sit there and I remember the one game they basically said what they were going to they do and they did it and then one guy is outside of sports that just blew me away as Malcolm Glatt well. I had a meeting with him and I realize I said I'm not very smart. You know at that but his ability to kind of understand people was incredible. Docs Bo this was this was a lot of fun. I appreciate you guys doing this. We could do another hour on a whole `nother set of topics but I appreciate you guys doing it. It's data yeah yeah. I love getting spokesman. Listen to what he's really thinking definition of introvert. That's that's great. Thanks for listening to this episode of the woods Pod a big. Thank you to our guest today. "Very one welcome to another edition of the wards pod and something I've wanted to do you for some time with the podcast I hope to do more of it this season and moving forward getting some of the smartest most accomplished people in the game together to talk about their craft the league their journeys and we do that this week with two championship coaches the Miami Heat's Erik Spoelstra and the Los Angeles Clippers Doc rivers and our visit about the league the Celtic heat rivalry that really reshape the modern. NBA Pat Riley and both of their connections and influence with him and a lot more. I hope you enjoy listening doc rivers Erik Spoelstra podcasts as much as I think the three of us did recording it so let's get right to it. Doc Rivers and Erik Spoelstra Doc rivers Los Angeles Clippers coach our exposure Miami Heat coach between you two two two thousand four hundred and thirty eight regular season games coached fourteen hundred seventeen wins six. NBA Finals two championships for Erik Spoelstra won for Doc rivers and four won't pause now which I appreciate. That's the moment he goes absolutely. It's funny guys. We're in Chicago. NBA NBA coaches meetings are here all your peers here except for a couple who are off at USA basketball and it's funny to see you guys and I see some your competitors editor seeing each other in the lobby and guys the relationships in the league among coaches and what's interesting. Is You know you guys are the sandwich of you know. It's funny all the owners the players the fans like the only thing they all have in common is they all think coach better than you guys. I don't think the players think think they could be owners. I'm not sure the owners think that can be players but in a lot of ways your fraternity is like the frontline of taking it from. I'm above below outside your the clearinghouse for it and you kind of see it. I think with your profession that there is an empathy for each other. There's no doubt you know I've done it. This is my twenty I think twentieth or twenty first year in a row at least starting camp and when I look at all the people who have coming on and good coaches you know that have come and gone and look at some of the crazy firings that have happened in that time span you do you you. you start understanding each other. You know it's madness in some ways but it's a love in another way and sharing and having having people to share stuff with important yeah and he just look across the sideline signed in January and you can see the bags under everybody's. We're all gone through his grandma. We love what we're doing. Obviously it's unbelievable profession to be a part of but there is that empathy and it's not like we're in college. We're not recruiting against each other and it's it's not quite as cutthroat like that and it's really just the game that we can bond on this time of year and soon as we sat down you guys already talking about what what your teams are doing in the off season conditioning in. Eric and I were talking about this earlier like you hit Labor Day and what happens to your like Labor Day. He come out of that. You know you got the coaches meetings and campus starting this month. There's your body almost like you're rounding third heading for training camp as the sun hit you after Labor Day. Yes absolutely you know my letters. Go out earlier to invite all the players back at the Labor Day this year. It was a week later because our facility wasn't ready to receive them yet. We we're redoing our facility and it just takes on. It's like like the sign of the season starts. I know October fourth or fifth or whenever it is training start but I think for most teams most coaches and staff it starts the day after Labor Day. You teams get back together. your staff's get together and you all of a sudden take more serious tone about the rest of the summer you too. It's I found an interview. You did years ago. Doc both of you are kind of clinic rats and I know SPO- will whether it's your both in floor living together for extended period both coaching in Florida and and you were still in Orlando. Your family and I saw an interview with you're you're talking about. You're one of those state high school clinics and you look out in the stands and you see but you know high school coaches college coaches taking notes and I think you are in Boston at at the time and then you look out and who do you see with a notebook was a cisco because I thought that was the other one but it it is what we do and I don't. I don't think I've ever been at a game that I wasn't involved in didn't learn something where I didn't steal something you know. I tell told the story about against Cleveland in game seven. We ran a plated. My Son Austin's highschool team and I saw ought to weeks earlier and I was thinking that's an interesting play and you run it. It works you know so yeah. I don't think we ever stop on every turn it on on all off and you can never stop learning. Never Stop Learning this game early on it was more stuff and then as you evolve evolve. I think is amazing that James. It's funny you bring up the game because there was another one in Miami point nine seconds left game tied and you ran one of those circle offense. Rondo got the lobby and then over so pissed after the ray of Garnet Pierce basically basically thought it was going to go for sure to one of those guys and you're a lob to Rondo and then afterwards I read that you said that you cut them blaming yourself. Ah Trump pulled up a video guys. We're starting to scout on all the you've see we have something to get the Celtics time. We plan as as head coaches both of you have has either of you experienced anything as intense is what you went through and those. Celtic heat series rivalries and what's interesting is two thousand eight the Big Three's put together and Boston via trade and then Miami respond two thousand ten via free agency and Lebron hadn't gotten past Boston Cleveland. That was some of the thought of going to Miami. Miami and those two teams change the course of this league well. You know you're right. As far as the three you know it went from the one superstar let's try to win to two superstars and then it went to the threes amazing X. going back to two in some ways again to match up with all the teams and you know. I think we had the same situation I would say this. I I got Kevin Paul and Ray at the right time. Sometimes you need players at the right time and for me for them. It was the right time for them to try to win. You know they had all all three have done a lot of stuff individually they. They had a lot of awards but it was time for winning for them and so I got him at the exact time that they needed that then unfortunately when you know we you were starting to go down the other way they come in with with their version of the big three and now I felt facing them yeah what was interesting from our standpoint. I don't think Kevin and Paulin wanted to give them that. They they really wanted to beat them because they didn't want another big three. I've is interesting how how that all played out game six SPO- in Boston in two thousand twelve two thousand eleven you go to the the NBA finals you lose to Dallas. You come back. You're up to now. You're down three to you're going to Boston you coach. Game Mhm seven in the NBA finals. You've coached won a championship in a game five. I guess in a game seven in your life. Did you ever feel like you were coaching a bigger game that game six in moss down three to you know what's really interesting about that series to a game one we win probably about fifteen points and we felt like we're in control after one game and then game two boom all of a sudden it goes. Ot and we win that one just like you said we're too. WHOA and we go to Boston and it is an absolute dogfight and that one ends up going over time and we were actually up in the fourth quarter. Most of the fourth quarter combust came back and took that game just shows you how quickly serious can change and you feel like you're in control. We felt like we were playing basketball and it's two one and then all of a sudden the momentum shifts and game four is you can imagine in the garden they take full control and blow us out of that game and his to to going back. Miami and it's an absolute dogfight and they absolutely just took our hearts out in game five and it was tough it. There's a real competitive game and after being up to going into Boston and have overtime game. You think you would be in control of the series and we were down in the series. We all felt it. We did not practice the next day I had a team meeting and we just talked about are wise and why we put this team together and and we're going to have to face the team that we knew we'd have to go through and the Boston Celtics. Were that team for us. it was that team for Lebron before he got to us. It was that team even though we didn't meet them late in the play asked with Wayne we had enough built up dislike for that team and we knew we had to go through them and going into the garden. Yeah you could hear it. You could hear the intensity level when they knew they thought they could close the series. we all felt it but it was it was a calmness going into that there was a quiet confidence going into it and then when he saw Lebron's look. I know that that look is pretty famous by now. Yeah I think everybody just felt a higher level of confidence going into that game probably his biggest game of his career. When you look back because you know he had one yet right you know the year before they loaded Dallas and now all of a sudden you know he'd probably had the most pressure you I know because the title and so funding going into that game preparing for an onslaught from Dwayne and in the brunt because we just know who they are but the Lebron performance that night was was incredible as more shooting. You remember like the driving being in passing. We thought we were prepared for but we were not prepared for the way he shot the ball that night. Forty five points fifteen rebounds I think and then we come back and game seven and Bosh at brought him off the bench he'd been out since the Indiana series with those abductor strain and came back and gave us a huge fourth quarter three three three threes. Two threes in the corner just gave us an incredible boost going down the a stretch yeah. I went back. I was looking at the clips of Chris and a couple of Roth Lebron drive and and that was new that was a wrinkle you hadn't Chris suddenly shot a handful all season and you're said he was coming off the injury and that was really you always see him standing in that corner. Oh yeah because he had made threes and and you know listen early on. We didn't mind him taking him. You know but we didn't know he's. GonNa make them and made them over and over again and now you really. You've been there whereas a coach where you have to make decision. Do you change your coverage of the you believe what you think you know that he can't keep making them We changed our coverage a little bit in that game. I've been in games where I just decided. There's no way a guy can keep making them. I've Lost Dame's like that as well and he wasn't in the series series and I played the game before a little bit but this was really his first time to really get out nine playoffs since he was hurt when you're in a series like that and and you're balancing the idea of staying with what your core beliefs are and what you of how you played who you've been about versus an adjustment changing doing something is that as difficult decision for coach when you get deeper into a playoff series about vow where you go away from because it's that you tell your players. This is who we are..

"Then i'd put between my legs are always all my it was always my hat okay because because always have ahead. I was moving it around. I've moved to the laugh moved to the right until things start going well but right as a coach you just sit there and coach and you told me off camera to that <hes> you also have the ability since you were once a broadcasting partner of him to call al michaels during the game contacted him. I still give him crap because last year that that big game that the bear's loss al-set something he has never said oboe before the cake. He kept saying ooh boy. This is a big kid. Oh boy and i was texting them. Police stop saying that and and obviously the ball cap. I thought i thought that when pineyro hit last night of all the times for al to be able to pull out the do you believe in miracles in the talking ever seen so many people so excited over a field goal kick now i know because it was just so brutal the way they went out last year in the preseason was struggling to an <hes> and in the car and then nagy made a decision last night. Let's go for it on fourth and tenants that have a fifty one year yeah. When when do you know sometimes. Do you think some doc rivers here when you are coaching. I'm making this move on. I know i'm going to be second guessed if this doesn't work out. Does that actually go to your temple that you just you know. It's a tough decision and <hes> i think when you coach you accept that like you don't think about if it doesn't work you just think about it working and <hes> and then when it doesn't work sometimes because it doesn't <hes> you know you are but that's part of the job and if you can't you have to accept that like as as part of the job you really do you know what i'd tell my players <hes> the first day of camp out. Tell them in two weeks. I introduced my name. Hey i'm doc rivers and and <hes> i'm human <hes> and every decision i make is going to be to win. Unfortunately for all of you then that all going to be right so get over. I said every year he's right right yeah because it's a fact you know <hes> as long as you know. You're trying to do it for the right reason. <hes> every decision then you're pretty free in your decision making so i'm keen to get your insight on what's going on with antonio brown and they were all on the outside looking in reading about it. Maybe hearing in about it <hes> what is it like when you discipline a player and it is the business of disciplining doing the player that is important for you to follow the rule that you have set for the team..

I mean seniors was attending you money. I think admit that i do believe that i had i had a good day. You did too short game. The day that i played with you was remark. Was i'm gonna say all thaba like while. I'm going to go there well well. That may just fill the soft touch around greens have to have good hands number times. I thought doc is out of his home. And then you pull yourself back in was really i lost my partner that a day was was rough though where i was going to bring him up well okay. Let's so let's talk about last night. What do you think what was that all about. It was awful but <hes> listen. I love their defense. You know that's who they are right. <hes> and you know at the first three possessions with the packers they had minus yards. Yeah you know so. I'm thinking the offensively because we changed coordinator so the defensively i was concerned. Yes <hes>. I <hes> that's going to be okay. <hes> actually think <hes> mitch i think will be fine. I i really do the first guy i'm amazing amazing. None of the quarterbacks <hes> <hes> i had <hes> dinner would golf and it told me they hadn't thrown one pass in the press. I've never heard of that court. He <hes> <hes> rogers didn't i mean brady rarely sits out preseason game number three. He did get a couple and right kristen yeah. He played a little bit but it's but pretty much coach. You'd rather the guy be healthy than absolutely the rust rather than rather than taking rust over an injury. You know now for sure <hes> but it's a great example that you can't no matter how you try to games are different now than anything you can do on the practice they just are <hes> and you could see that from both quarterbacks yesterday yeah i know and plus it was a new system for for rogers in a new coach in his ear new new way of going about his business. He had to be just out of body right. I mean you know he's such an such a veteran. I mean the the passing through the court for the touchdowns. If you know just threw it up and told the guy go get it you know but yeah. That's the new way fan are you. I mean you were you watching the game. At home. I was watching the game <hes> and then the first quarter. I didn't like the location because i didn't like our playing <hes> you in your physical location physically change locations and then in the third quarter <hes>. I'm sitting there with my girlfriend. Were watching the game at a bar okay and i don't like it again and and teller we have to move and go to another location like drive somewhere else was a restaurant in the back part and so i just thought if i changed my seating that things would change nothing changed. I mean you just kept looking at and we're stuck on three forever by the way we we didn't make a real nice ville right. That happens nice. So are you the same when you're coaching but i'm still completely different opposite of that coaching. I'm pretty much <hes> we're gonna do this. You know maybe because i have my own control. Is it true in l. and so maybe that's it. It's probably the way you know watching your kids. <hes> play sports you know i was. I was a little antsy that way as well. You know they have my hat..

"Now. It really does. I can tell you I've broken up and some I've watched because I thought this is good, you know, and it needed to happen. And you know, some you have to get in early 'cause you can see. Yeah. And you got to watch that I played with the Knicks, and we had Charles, Oakley and Anthony Mason. Greg. I mean, there's there's some fights that you had to break up. Yeah. So DaMarcus cousins is still on ice for Golden State says he's going to try to play after Christmas. How will that work? How will that fit? I don't know. But it's going to work. I mean, listen, they were the one team that could take the chance really when you look at it because of his injury. No one wanted to rehabilitate them. And then lose them, you know. And so I thought it was smart for him. And I thought smartphone Golden State and he's too good. Not to help them. Now. I don't know how. But he's just too good. I think is passing underrated. He's a great passer and that fits it does what they do. So it's going to help them. That's that's what concerns me is because to get book at his best. He needs to ball. Well, and they're the ball is hot potato. And I know he wants to win a ring. But in order for him to get that contract that he wants he's gonna have to put up numbers. Well, how does he get the numbers in that system? I don't think you need the numbers. I think in these the wins because if he plays and they win he'll get the number. If he plays just the numbers, and they lose he'll get the blood. But what about when people say well that was he was like that he was on his best behavior and Golden State. How can we be assured that when he comes here, and there's no caught your liking Goldens. Now, he's going to be on his best behavior. And then they'll bring them into a bad. Culture. And he I think, you know, listen, I hope it doesn't work. Just just explode. But at the end of the day, if it does work, you know, I think he would have learned a lot of things, and I think behaviors behavior like if he quote unquote, behaves himself, then he's learn how to write, and I don't think you regress. I think you learn how to win you become a winner. I don't think that changes are guys we're gonna take a quick rake, and we'll have more. Coach Doc Rivers still with us. Thanks for being here. Thank you early over way to practice. Other players women to stay here. So quick thoughts on the Eastern Conference. Obviously Jimmy Butler goes to the Sixers Celtics have been hit and miss, you know, this history there, but Kyrie at a big game last night as they want it New Orleans. Nice win for them you'd beat Milwaukee. There's this team from Toronto the has his number two now to dog. He would he refused to address Kawai Kawai left San Antonio. He. I'm going to the cue word. On my team, your thoughts who looks like will come out of that uses tough as well. They're top heavy. I still think Boston is the favourite, but Toronto's right there. They really are. Then the walkie. I mean, there's some good teams of these right now. Fairly Phillies there too. You know now, they are Philly closer. Now. Everyone said before can they close? Can they close games, you know? Bringing Jimmy they do now have a closer that's gonna make them tough. That's Demi gives them value is his ability to score down the stretch. Will you saw Milwaukee beat them? There's no what do you think about the free? He's he's a mess is tough Durant. Lebron and the him just far as preparing for. I mean, it's funny unless a defensive minded guy, but there's times in the meetings talk that that'll work that's gonna work because they're that good. And he doesn't such different way. You know, he didn't do shot. He doesn't with the attack and his size. He's. To do to try to build a wall sound like Donald Trump, and I never went. Maybe sick. But but you do you have to build a wall at the basket. The problem in what bud has done which is doing is. They all the shooting around. So while you're building the wall. He's throwing it out because he's a great passer..

"Your form. He he needs more than that. He needs to therapist. Doc Rivers will join us coming up. Get your phone calls. What was docked from the line dock strikes me is guess seventy seven percent from the line. Checking seventy seven is the over under. Yeah. Wow. Dance seventy eight and a half percent from the line career rivers. Yeah. Yeah. I'm ever. I'm ever playing Papa shot with Doc Rivers. Dominate. I don't I don't think. So you know, like Papa shots just a little game. Like, this isn't like really shooting though, it's different. But the I think dominated me don't low pop shop. Let me see can I get a couple of phone calls in here. Let's see Mike in Wisconsin leads us off. Hey, mike. What do you have today? Eight six six three spinal fuse to thirty five. I have to agree with Seaton's opinion on living bell. I, you know, I think most of the fans for the first nine weeks of the season didn't realize that they'll play out his rookie contract. He hasn't had a chance at free agency. Yet, you know, he's been take two years. You know, most these get to play and they can test the market, and you know, bell has been taking a lot of heat. I think from especially the fans that don't really understand. He hasn't even had a chance yet. You know? He hasn't been able to do a sign and trade or Pittsburgh hasn't signed him. And you know, you have to respect what he's doing for the year sitting here. Yeah. He made a decision but soda the Steelers. I I just don't think it's fair that we look at the Steelers in there the bad guys here their business. They ran it as a business. They were trying to get him for something cheaper. You franchise him. He's the one that said he was coming back, and he was going to have his best year ever. And then. Never came back in. But if he was told to take the deal, but he he decided that he didn't wanna do it. And that that's on him. But it doesn't mean that you can't criticize what his decision was. I think we look at him. Well, that's a mercenary look at what he did. He did it for his reasons, and we're going to see if it all plays out in his favor. The Steelers did it for their reasons. And we'll see how it plays out for them. You can have both of them that lose. He doesn't get that money in the Steelers flame out in the playoffs. That could be a scenario as well that they both lose. Yes. But at this seem like the team gets the benefit of the doubt where it's like, hey, this is a business. They're running a business over there for some reason. When a player does it it's personal. They're both business. He's a bad teammate. Now. I don't know if I want that guy in my locker room a guy who thinks that it does become personal with the player. Whereas the team it's like, hey, this is just smart business. I think it's both. They're both business decisions. The tricky part is you're bringing a guy back to your team where your offense lineman have already spoken about him. And this is a team that leads the league drama every single year. That's that's where it's it's personal. Because of that. And I look I think Pittsburgh did what they needed to do given the situation there and later on bell vol. I don't agree with it. I understand it. You know, he's basically saying I'm trading in fourteen and a half guaranteed for thirty thirty five guaranteed. I wanna make sure I get the thirty five guaranteed. I understand that avoiding injury. But imagine if he came back and all of a sudden, he says you can use me, but you can use me eleven times a game. Like see that's where it was going to be silly..
