"Welcome back. This is the Ben Shapiro show. Joining us on the line is Dr Martin Macari, surgeon professor of health policy at Johns Hopkins University. He's entering Chief of Med Page Day in New York Times bestselling author of the Price We Paid, Dr Macari. Great to talk to you. Great to be with event. So you have a fascinating piece in today's Wall Street Journal that is well worthy of the read all about how close we are to herd immunity. It is amazing to see how many people in the government in the media keep downplaying the good news with regard to cover it. Well, we're hearing from the Biden administration that we can't unmask until maybe December. Maybe even beyond that. We keep hearing that that even post vaccination We're not going to get back to normal. There is no normal And yet you argue that we are actually shockingly close to herd immunity. At this point, the United States E think as a scientist, you've got to ask the question what explains a 76% drop in daily cases over the last six weeks, and that's the data. That's not my opinion. Now in the medical community we like in politics have a lot of groupthink. And that herd mentality is not powerful, especially when it's controlled a lot by an old guard medical establishment. To be honest with, you know, to be frank, many from Don't practice medicine at all. And the 76% drop in daily. New cases cannot be explained by the vaccine. It cannot be explained by behaved sudden behavior change. It could only be explained by natural immunity over 50%. The country right now has some natural immunity. And we've tried to study this in the past with what we call Hero prevalence testing, which looks at how common people have antibodies, But guess what? The T cell has memory it gets triggered. And it is, um, able to produce antibodies in the future. So even if you don't have antibodies and activated T cell confers immunity. And a study out of Sweden's Caroline Skin Institute that I referenced in The Wall Street Journal piece shows that activated T cell immunity is more common than antibodies being present after covert infection. Another European study Found the people who live with somebody who had covert but never had symptoms. That person developed activated piece L immunity and BMJ scientists. By the way, the UK scientists are often not on the same page US sciences. Interesting. Massive divide in thinking Now they're smart. You know, they developed the vaccine first with Oxford. They say that in the BMJ that we have underestimated the power of T cell immunity. So for all those reasons, I truly believe natural immunity has driven down the curb a lot, and now we're augmenting that With vaccinated immunity 15% of the country by the end of this week, up to 40% by the by the beginning of a April. That means suggests that we will be at her immunity levels by April, and it's already started to kick in. And Dr Macartney the amount of bad news that we're hearing from. Supposed health experts, You know the greatest of all doctors, Dr Fauci second only to Dr Joe Biden. In my opinion in terms of great doctors, Doc Doctor Fauci keeps shifting his opinion repeatedly on this. He'll say that we're gonna be much better by July. Then it'll be. We're much better by December. We can only reopen the schools when a stimulus package passes. We could only reopen the schools when teachers are vaccinated, But maybe they don't need to be vaccinated. We're we're hearing the CD stand. The CDC standards change for shall Wolinsky admitted that they set the CD stand. CDC standards for school reopening. Based on stuff like Teacher union input, and this was supposed to be the administration of science and taking this stuff very seriously. All of this messaging is leading to extraordinary amount of discombobulation for Americans about whether they should even bother getting the vaccine their new polls out. They show that About one third of all members of the U. S. Armed forces were saying they don't want to get the vaccine. Apparently, they're having trouble getting NBA players to do ads cutting ads saying that people should get the vaccine all because we have politicians, we're going out there saying things like, Well, even if you've had the vaccine, you probably can still pass along the virus. You should continue socially distancing and wearing a mask until the end of time. This seems like the the policy. Worst calibrated to getting people to take the vaccine and finally ending this thing in the near future. But we've seen the politicalization of science that was going on for the last year. But now it is reaching all time highs. And the reason I say that it's not my opinion, Ben. The medical establishment that was hammering the government and the strategy for the last year, and there were things there to be critical of has all of a sudden guns silence. Mean crickets in any criticism of anything we hear about. Inspired and got elected. Now I personally believe we should be criticizing any administration. Okay? I'm not saying this is a partisan. I'm saying that says, like I was critical of things from the last administration, and I'm critical of things. Now, why is it that we're not seeing any criticism and what's happening is We're seeing the White House set these sort of political expectations. And we know those talking points are designed to calibrate perceptions and manipulate opinion so that When things happen. They're seen as Oh, This is ahead of schedule, and the reality is the school thing is a classic example. They're dragging their feet. They're winning by stalling. I wrote a piece in on fox news dot com on in the opinion section yesterday about how the CDC guidelines Completely politicized the issue and violate the science, including an article from top CDC scientists that most published 3.5 weeks ago. Our top medical journal JAMA. Total conflict now. If those CDC guidelines on schools were applied to the aviation industry, all planes would be grounded. Why is it that adults get to pack into airplanes with masks and good ventilation, which keep it safe? And there's no transmission on airplanes. And yet kids are forced to have their livelihood revoked..

"Okay, So it was the staff who were positive and they walked in and spread so sending actual Covert positive people to the nursing homes. Yeah, he doesn't. I guess he doesn't accept what the science on that does the common sense the reality. Um Than individuals were covert positive than I guess this flies in the face on the whole, you know, staying 6 ft. Apart, wearing masks, Corentin for two weeks away from everybody else. They were. Where's sending a people of the quarantine and cruise ships at the very beginning number that people quarantined and cruise ships and then going tol around here in taxes that they were going up to San Antonio? To a former Air Force base the quarantine for two weeks after their crews. Just make sure you don't have your spreading around. Just completely fumbling it. You know, last hour in case you missed our one towards the end, I was playing a Steve played on your producer played. Dr Anthony Fauci, defending Defending Vice president Kamala Harris. In her common that the bite administration needed to start from scratch on the whole vaccine distribution. She know she's talking about getting those vaccines of the people don't know. You know it Z. You have to put it in, put it into perspective, Contacts all their much like the doctor. Fauci was playing the role of one of those truth, verifiers or fact checkers on that. That was his his quote, a common pretending to be one of the fact checkers. You know, from his defectives. Well, Dr Fauci and coming to the defense had nothing to say about Governor Cuomo is cut cut 11 Steelers Doc Doctor Fauci. And I wonder, Can you clear that up? Was he actually following federal guidelines to do that? You know, Jim, I can't. I mean, I'm sorry. I'm I'm really I'm honestly not trying to evade your question, but I'm not really sure of all the details of that. Sometimes people on the outside, just we'll just do something to do it. And then they act like they're our victim. But no, no, no, no, no, no, not this time. Lawmakers have bypassed metal detectors face a $5000 fine for the first defense. 10 grand for each additional defense. After that, Gomer did that, apparently. And, um He is one of the first two GOP resistors punished under the new rule and exited the capital after the Capitol riot, says the Dallas News Olmert said will be appealing because this is ridiculous. This is not the Godfather. I love this. This is so awesome Classic Gohmert. This is not the Godfather where you plant a gun on the toilet tank. There's no toilet tank in the bathroom. That was great. So in other words, he might do it. But this man Is a former judge. And he has a right to protect himself like any one of us and he actually works there. And his employer is this country And in this country, you have a right Tol to bear arms. It's outrageous. It's insane, So I support him and then he could take it and go to court now with it. Because he can't count on the Capitol police who were grossly incompetent along with their leaders. I should say, Don't blame Anna cops a plea on their leaders because they can't deploy themselves and pick their positions up prior to this or prepare for they have to their leaders do so. The, um Yeah. There you go. That's that's it. I am having so much fun looking at The The trolling of David Hog with his soon to be failed. Pillow Cos. Is great. Absolutely great. I promised Theo to play you. Some audio of From the press conference today. Where a Newsmax reporter asked Jen Psaki by the hypocrisy. Of the Abide administration with welcoming illegals. While we have high unemployment, we supposedly need a stimulus and we have covert everywhere. Everybody's dying, and Joe. Why is Joe letting these illegals come in? I'll play a part of it, and then I'll jump to another part of it. It's sort of keeping with this is news. Max is Emerald Robinson during the press conference today. Here we go. Sure keeping with economic theme of the day. My first question, given the most recent job numbers and to continued unemployment and what you had to say today about particularly how minority do you have been affected? Is this the right time to increase the number of refugees coming into the country? And also he's Immigration and border restrictions. Well, the president fundamentally believes that having AH a humane and moral immigration system in place strengthens our country strengthens our economy. Many, many business leaders across the country lab a blood then let me kind of jump to where the reporter comes back in. It's great because the blob aligns of not answering the question it all because she's like all crab Once again. I can't say anything data where we need to be. Now for the public health aspect of it, considering that coronavirus numbers are still where they are, Um, the president is enacted more restrictions on travel restrictions, including South Africa. How does that play into it with On refugee policy. I'm sorry. I'm not trying understand your question. I mean, considering the coronavirus numbers where they are, and that we're by the way, that was Jen Psaki. Oh, crap. Were contradicting ourselves like we do all the time. Doing more restrictions on travel does that not also then effect, refugee policy and immigration, bringing more people in the country sort of following up on Kristen's? Well, the refugee policy is increasing the cap. It doesn't change what our travel restrictions or travel policies are, and of course, those were put in place to keep the American people. Safe, But those were not meant to do anything. Are you following this that letting you eagles and on the mass scale during Cove it while we have Ah, big unemployment problem. And while we have a horrible economies, supposedly according to them, um is exactly why we need to, uh, bring in illegals. What other than take necessary steps at this moment in time, based on the advice of health and medical experts on where we need to restrict travel from, obviously when it seemed we would based on the Nickel advice of health experts who Say that that that like Doc, Doctor Fauci and like the doctor leads the CBC, who say. Both have said it's safe to go back to school and the teachers don't only need to be vaccinated. I thought those doctors that you said yesterday um when they contradicted by demonstration are just no, no, no, They're just they're speaking in their personal capacity. Even though they're in an interview with CNBC. In front of the CDC banner behind them at their job during their date Drug day at their office begin. If you live on CNBC is out there in a personal capacity. Even though it says CDC behind them, and they're working in their live on the air. It's in a personal capacity. It's as if When the head of the city's he said that It's as if she was.

"Has no idea what he's talking about, as it relates to massive. Okay, But you do OK, so he has changed his tune four times. He was making things up as they go, so you'll forgive me Church if I am not We're really excited to listen to a quote unquote expert like Anthony founder. I'm not surprised on something like I'm not surprised. Okay, so if I could respond, I'm not surprised that somebody on the right took another opportunity to go after the infectious disease expert, which is Dr Fauci. It's a broken record, and it's pathetic. Quite frankly, anybody out there that thinks they know more about this virus than Dr Fauci is ignorant. First of all. Dr Fauci, and I don't even know why you just brought him up other than just to try to attack Dr Fauci again, which everybody on the right seems to do, including Laura Ingram, the racist, Evil witch, But it's pathetic. Quite frankly, Doctor. Fauci has been doing this for decades. It's sad that I have to bring this up over and over and over again. He has 100 times more experience when it comes to infectious disease than you or I have in our pinky. That's number one. The reason why I talk about it. Is because I've been through it and I've been through it in the worst possible way and I almost died from it. All that a second. I just wanted to finish s O. What you said, is completely incorrect. It's like if I can. First of all, you don't even know what I'm gonna say. So if you could please let me finish. Dr Fauci didn't say we don't need to wear a mask. When Dr Fauci first started talking about mask wearing hey, wanted to make sure that we had enough mast for nurses and doctors and those on the front lines. And by the way, he said that over and over again, so that is a lie. And that is a right wing talking like number two. I'm not done yet. Said in March 2020. We're not done yet. Not need to be walking around with masks on said that verbatim, Okay, you're not. You're not letting me finish. You're not letting me finish just to any changes. No, you're not changes to it again. He changes to in 37. It's not okay again. That's not Crew and please next time bring the actual quote that, he said, and let's put it in contact. Just wanted a quote. No, you didn't because that's not what he said. And you're not putting it in context and and by the way, he was asked about that, and I don't again. I don't know why we're talking about Dr Fauci, another opportunity for you and nut jobs on the right to attack Dr Fauci, and I think it's pathetic. That's pathetic. That's not what this segment is about. We've talked about Dr Fauci for a year. I'm done with people attacking Dr Fauci. I'm done. We're talking now about the vaccine, and I'm looking forward. I'm not interested in talking about Dr Fauci right now. Now, if that's not the kind of show that I want to do. There's a lot of people who do right wing talk shows that care more about attacking Dr Fauci than the vaccine and trying to get this thing over with. That's not me. That's not what I want to do. I'm just giving my input Brian, you don't you don't have to give a tax would have to do that attack. I'm going to something I'm going to say. I believe attacked Dr Fauci for a year, and it's and it's pathetic. Don't you found She has been consistently wrong. Dr. Frank. She's the one that that shut down the economy. Interesting that you say Doc Doctor Fauci, sure who was not alive. During the last during the Spanish flu, who had never dealt with this practice in his life, despite the fact that he is infections, he's expert and I'm not saying that I'm an expert. I'm just pointing out. This quote unquote expert has been consistently wrong and is changing. His story ends in the process moving his goal posts. Okay, based on self. I can respond to that now and then I was like he's just making it up as is going on. So if I could respond to that now and then I'd like to stay on track with what this segment was supposed to be about. Which is the vaccine. Not about Dr Fauci. You just used the term. Dr Fauci is quote unquote consistently wrong. Never in the last year have I heard you say anything about Donald Trump being quote unquote consistently wrong? For example, when he said, we have 15 cases, it's gonna go down to zero. It's just going to Magically disappear or when he said, You know what? By April? I think this will be all over with. He made comment over And if I could, please if I could please finish from fucking please finish the mistake. If I could please finish if I could please finish over and over and over again in the last year when it comes to this virus, Donald Trump has been quote on quote. Consistently wrong. But you take the opportunity today to go afterward, the infectious disease expert Dr Fauci, but never criticized Donald Trump. Let's end it there, trooper. Okay. You just You just made that up. I said Donald Trump was wrong both of the on both those situations. I said he was obviously wrong that you are fake news, everything everything, Trump told Did the general public that came directly from birds and Fauci. Right? Obviously. So he told so. He just up visiting infectious disease experts of her husband. So Dr Fauci told me about possibly infecting injecting yourself with disinfectant. He was listening through the head of the coronavirus task force appointed by Mike Pence. Who President Trump his vice president. Mike Pence. He put him in charge, so I'll say it again when he found she was okay. But so you brought up Dr Fauci. Um, you said he's been in consistently wrong. I made the statement. I made this hold on a second. A lot of second. Let me just finish You made the statement that he's been consistently wrong. I know you want to take every opportunity to go after Dr Fauci. Like many people on the right Do I've brought up how Donald Trump has been consistently wrong. I'd like to move on now and actually talk about what this segment was supposed to be about, which is the vaccine. Moving forward now rooting for Joe Biden to hopefully get this to 300 million Americans and some important subjects..

"And Cooling, Dr Fauci says he feels liberated in the new Biden administration over to the fight against coronavirus. It's a marathon, our medical editor says. Don't give up till we're past the finish line and recap. I think our top story is part of his pandemic plan. President Biden would like schools to reopen by April and today here in Philadelphia school nurses will be vaccinated. That's all ahead in the next 15 minutes. Good morning. I'm Carol Mackenzie. And I mean Bush. Good morning, Tim McLachlan's of the editor's desk, along with Connor bark on and live on our line to the White House. Now at CBS News, White House correspondent Stephen Portnoy. Steven Good morning, happy Friday after a long and consequential week in Washington were now getting a look at Doc Doctor Fauci unleashed a really visible and audible change in the nation's top infectious disease expert Liberated, found she last night at the White House briefing room, his first appearance here in about two months. This after the new president met with his covert team and Joe Biden said that he vowed to be honest about the difficulties ahead, he said the brutal truth is, it's going to take months before we can get the majority of Americans vaccinated. Afterward, Dr Fauci came into the briefing room to ask to answer the public's questions as posed by reporters, And he said he was relieved to be working for a president that values honesty. And he said, this is his quote one of the new things in this administration If you don't know the answer, Don't guess. Just say you don't know the answer. He referred to the fact that the former president used that same podium to tout drugs like And found, she said he no longer fears repercussions for contradicting the sitting president. When asked about such claims, he says, the science will speak for itself, and that is somewhat of a liberating feeling. Stephen. There have been big problems that we're hearing about. Ah, places not getting enough vaccines, places having vaccine to not using them and the fact that this could take a wildest sort out. Can you tell us what the latest is on that? Well, it's a complicated picture, and it's different in every state. Why is that? Well, the under the Trump administration, essentially, the federal government said, We're going to work on developing vaccines, and then we're going to distribute them on this allotment schedule and then in the states, it's up to you 50. Plus entities to figure it out. Some states have done it rather effectively. West Virginia, for example, went directly at the old age population, which in that state is more rural and more likely to be clustered in old age homes, and people are more willing to drive further because they have to drive when they need to get things. On in in, uh you know, more diverse populations and clustered cities. It's harder. There's less supply for whatever reason, And this is something that, for example, the mayor and governor of New York are really saying that listen, they want to distribute more vaccine. They're just out of supply. Yesterday, President Biden held his hand at 200 page book that is essentially his administration strategy of how to combat this, but he was honest and forthright, he said. It's going to take many more months before the majority of Americans will be vaccinated. A reporter posed a question. Why, sir, if when you look at it in the aggregate, the United States is on pace with a million shots being administered per day to meet your goal of 100 million vaccinations in 100 days. Why not raise the goal? Well, the new president bristled at that and said, Come on, man. Give me a break. When I announced this plan, you said it would never be achievable. But the truth is, if it is going to be achieved, it's because the country is now on a pace set by the previous president. "Story that obviously with all the politics that's been going on around this on a I guess a quiet news day would probably be a little more elevated. But for all of you, pet owners, you're definitely gonna want to tune into this right here. We've got Steve Dale on the phone, Steve. Thanks for joining us. We've got a lot of dog deaths related to a food And the FDA is actually expanding a recall. Correct, so the name we would know Ryan is sport mix, so if you feed your dog, and there's one cat brand, also of sport mix Dog or cat food, Then my hope is that you're listening very carefully. Otherwise, you have nothing to worry about. So it's only to those brands and those brands are generally used for dogs that are sporting dogs that are out there hunting, so it's not generally a food that City dog owners made by anyone could buy it, but that's that's kind of who their target audience is, If you will. The problem is there's a mold. Esper Gillis That has grown inside some of these foods and anywhere from about 28 to 38 up to 70 dogs. It's unclear how many have died as a result, and no matter what that number is, If your dog is one of them, it doesn't matter what that number is. Right. So there is a recall. You want to be clear of those foods and you're right because of the news cycle being what it is. I'm depending on social media, Me talking on the radio like this to get the word out the dog owners. I'm looking at the list Right now. It's pretty extensive. Pretty much anything sports mix if you get it for cat food, dog food. You should probably check it out online. The FDA has got all that information for you. Um, we we've had issues with pet foods before I want to say a couple of years ago, wasn't it with the cat with the wet cat food had some issues, So it's not new. I'm glad they test that. I never know quite how they test this stuff. But Um, probably good for everyone tonight. Yeah, it is. So I could tell you that, you know, I visited many pet food factories around the country actually around the world, and I can say with absolute confidence And absolute conviction that our pet food is Has watched over, if not more carefully scrutinized than the food we shopped for every day. I'm absolutely confident of that. And in a way, though, it doesn't sound so it was. I don't know, 78 years ago, there was a major maybe longer than that. At this point. I'm not good. With years there was a major major pet food recall. It was horrible. It was a catastrophe impacting many companion animals. Mostly dogs, but From that we've learned and and the pet food industry has very carefully watched over. And when we see these recalls, in a way, that's a good thing. I was not a good thing that any pet is passed away. That usually doesn't happen, and it's happened multiplied. I apparently many dogs in this case, and that's inexcusable. That's a catastrophe. However, the pet food industry is very proactive themselves, and the FDA does a good job of watching over Pepe. The reason why we see molds is that we have corn and other grains and pet foods that's common right and in pet suits. And it's easy Mold likes that apparently, and it's easy potentially to grow, but we've done a very good job of keeping it away. It's the exception, but I'm not excusing the exception at all. I'm just saying, it's a good thing that it's watched over so carefully. It's gonna be hard to link all of these together because fight or fluffy, dies in one state, and then you've got the same situation, other state and all of a sudden You know, it takes a little time to realize there's a problem or four. You can figure out. You know what the problem is and where it is to be where the blame is. And the problems are to the extent that an animal dies is rare. But again, I'm not excusing it. It's awful sport mixes the pet food that has been recalled. It shouldn't be on shelves at this point, because it's been a while that it's been recalled. But nevertheless, you social media spread the word. I wanted to ask you the story about it. It's on my Website. And because you know, there are lots of your PC codes that we cannot rattle off on the radio. So it's all there thieves Dale that TV. I wanted to ask you because we've had a couple dog deaths by coyotes in Palestine, and it looks like they've now hired an expert to come in and at least maybe give authorities a little bit of a handler. Understanding as toe. Why this would happen. Where? When to try and protect owners as best as we can. The last one. We know that the coyote actually jumped a 6 ft fence. And yes, that does happen. Um, you know, I assume other than telling people to lock their gates and and keep an eye on your small dogs. Is there really anything else you can do? Oh, absolutely. So it's called hazing. That's the terminology. So when you walk your dog if you have a small dog or even a mid sized dog and your concern, take something with you like a whistle. Or take some pots and pans that make loud noise. And and truly, if you see a coyote just blow that was hit the pots and pans and the coyote will run in the other direction. Coyotes don't want to deal with people and they don't like loud noises. You know the answer to all this If you know there are coyotes in your community just don't let the dog out unsupervised in your yard. It's kind of that temple. Now There are things you could buy their call coyote rollers that you put on top of a fence and is the coyote tries to make it over. Literally. It rolls the coyote off the fence, and the coyote falls down the other way isn't even going to try again. And if the coyote did try again, something would happen. So there are things you can do. But my best answer is coyotes really don't like people They don't like loud noises. If there's a human at the other end of the leash, and on top of it aloud noise that coyote is going to move the other way. They want to take it a couple questions and we've only got about two minutes or so left. But you locked down the interview of the week and maybe the year so far in 2021 u talkto Dr Anthony Fauci have that go Sunday. I don't know. I think it went. Well, there was there was where you were feeling. Good way. Always feel a certain way When we walk away from an interview, How did you feel? Oh, man, I don't ever know. You know, I leave it for the bosses. People like you people like Mary. They tell me, you know, I don't know. And most of all, my biggest boss our listeners and and said that if I were to go by what listeners said, I guess I did. Okay. Very, very well. You know, my challenge was to ask some things that I hoped Others may not have asked him about and according to Doc, Doctor Fauci himself. That was the case in a good way because we communicated via text afterwards up, and I wanted to get in the points that people wanted to know..

"Morning. Hello, J On the tide of Don show. Hey, how you guys doing? Oh, outstanding. I may lose my co host to some kind of criminal investigation involving a longhorn. But What's on your mind J thinking, you know, we're talking about the vaccine and for you know, covert night scenes and stuff, and I'm curious is if I get the vaccine does that means I still have to wear a mask? When I go out in public? That's what doctor found, she says. But I'm not spreading it anymore because I don't have it. Yeah. How does how does it How would a business know that? I don't know. Do I get a sticker? Oh, you mean like You mean like an I d card that says you have your vaccinations? You mean like a registry? That kind of thing? Well, that's that's something you may they may put place on this might be happening. Yeah, I know that. I know the airline industry's talking about their travel visa, Covert Visa travel passport. Yeah. If you do some international Trump might have to have it. Yeah. Which is why I know you're just which is kind of stupid and silly in a violation, don't you think? He kind of? Yeah, I would think so that you know you have to check somebody's I mean, if we're not checking people crossing the border for their ideas, And why would they check us if we have a Kobe? Well, good point. Good point. Let me ask you that because there are certain like, for example, there was there's certain parts of Egypt. If you go to, for example. That you have to have certain vaccinations before you go. And you're gonna have to show proof of that. Not where we're going on this trip, but you know there are places in the world. Where you have to have vaccinations to go show and I choose not to go to those places. Well, okay, That's fine. But if you are, you might have to show some kind of health passports. Should J have to show a health passport that he's got the vaccination just to fly from Dallas to Houston. Are not even that just to go to a G B. Well, we don't know that just to do that way. Don't know you're gonna have to do that. Well, don't be naive. That's exactly what they're going to do. What are you talking about? It's exactly what they're working on. You're gonna have to have some kind of idea that shows you got your vaccination to get into a school to get into a government building to apply for a loan. They're gonna get Afghan a card Every time I walk into a 7 11 or something like that, but not wear masks. Good point, Jake did I mean give it again again, given something that has literally brought the entire world, almost two to its knees unnecessarily. A lot of it, probably most of it, but But given the enormity of this Would it be really, really out of the question to do something like that? Maybe it makes? Yeah, I'd be out of the question. Thanks. So do you think it would really be crossing the line? They may do it. But, you know, it will have to fight its way through the court system. That's for sure. There are. No it won't go. Well, it won't go well. There will be at least 20% of this nation that refused to get a shot at least. Yeah, And that's very concerned. It may be even more. We'll see. We'll see. Yeah, but I think most people out there would be motivated to get that shot. Maybe not wanting to be first in line. You go first. And let me see if you drop dead or anything like that. I think you're right. I think I think seizure. I think most people will jump in line to get the shot. Most people will I want to do whatever. But I think a lot of people won't well, and the fact that Doc Doctor Fauci and the like, are gonna want us to continue to wear masks even after the vaccination. I'm gonna have a very, very big problem with that. If that keeps going on. If I still have to wear my damn mash to the gym. Ah, year from now. Well, I don't know what I'm gonna do, but I will not be happy. I'll be happy to know exactly what you'll do You know where the damn mask problem. You're a jump in line. Give me the shot today, guy. Probably. Hey, it is 9 26. Since the beginning of this virus has started talking about hottie Carlson, an amazing disinfectant that they have called vital oxide. Best use with a victory sprayer. "It could get worse. It can get very difficulty at times watching these lines getting longer and longer. What do you expect in the coming months when county support federal support drops off Our families will come to us and even greater numbers, and that's my biggest fear. And you know, we have to serve. All of those people were committed to serving everybody who comes to our doors. Joining me now Live is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Dr Anthony Fauci. Dr Fauci, Welcome back to this week. Today could be the busiest travel day in the country since the start of the pandemic, even though you and other public health leaders have made appeal after appeal for people to stay put. And distance as much as possible. When you watch these scenes, what do you think? And what else can you possibly say to them? Well, I mean, the travel that has been done has been done right now is people go back? We want to urge them. If they've been in situations outside of the family setting in which they really don't know the level of exposure to be really careful when you either return from the place that you went. Or other people come back into your house. That you've really got to understand the importance of trying to prevent further spread and further surge that maybe when you go back to where you came from If it's possible to quarantine yourself for a period of time, or even get tested to make sure that you're not bringing infection back to another place being another home or another family. Having said that? We have to be careful now because they're almost certainly is going to be an uptick because of what has happened with the travel. We understand the importance of family is getting together. And it's just something that we have to deal with that we likely will have an increase in cases as we get into the colder weeks of the winter, and as we approach Christmas season. Please don't forget the standard public health measures that we talk about The reason I say that Martha and almost plead with people is that we do know that it does work. Countries that have mitigated have turned around the surge. States that have mitigated have had a turnaround of the inflection of the curb. So it does work. And as we've just heard, help is on the way Vaccines are really right on the horizon. Will be having vaccines available for the higher priority people towards the middle and end of December and as we get into January and February, so everyone is totally empathetic. About the fatigue that everyone is feeling. But if we can hang in there, hang in there a bit longer and do the fundamental things wearing of mask uniformly. Avoiding crowds and congregate settings, keeping physical distance washing your hands. They seem simple in the enormity of the problem that we're facing, But they do make a difference. Doctor fact, she pleaded. Before the beginning. Yeah, Doc Doctor Fauci. You have said that again and again and again. We saw all those people traveling. So you know what's coming. And with Christmas just around the corner, do you think will be under the same restrictions that you recommended? On Thanksgiving going into Christmas. You know, Martha, I can't see how we're not gonna have the same thing because when you have the kind of inflection that we have, it doesn't all of a sudden turn around like that. So clearly in the next few weeks, we're going to have the same sort of thing. And perhaps even two or three weeks down the line, Martha, we may see a surge upon a surge. You know, we don't want to frighten people. But that's just the reality. We said that these things would happen as we got into the cold weather and as we began traveling, and they've happened It's gonna happen again. So I cannot see all of a sudden a relax ation of the kinds of recommendations or restrictions because we're getting into colder weather and enough in even larger holiday season as people travel to come back and forth for Christmas, so I don't see a relax ation. Of the kind of recommendations and restrictions that we've made and Dr Factory, the Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down New York's Covad restrictions on religious gatherings in the state. How concerned are you about legal challenges to pandemic restrictions going forward? Well, I mean, they happened, Martha. There's nothing I can do about it. I just keep saying that when people ask me for Opinions of specific things rather than make a comment on a specific things. I can just say it doesn't matter who you are, where you are when you have congregate settings, particularly indoors when people are not wearing masks. That is a considerable risk for acquisition and spread of infection. No matter what the circumstances that is a risk. And you said there should be more regular testing available for asymptomatic people. How soon do you think before Americans could have inexpensive home tests and why haven't they so far? Well, I hope it's it's sooner rather than later, Martha. I mean they obviously we've done better in testing than we did early on in the beginning, but you're talking about different kinds and different motivations and different objectives of testing. You're trying to find out. If a person is infected either for contact tracing or what have you, then you want a highly sensitive test that might take a day or two to get a result back. When you're trying to find out what the extent of the community spread is that is driven very clearly, at least in part by asymptomatic spread, so we need to know the extent of the asymptomatic. The only way you know that is what you just asked for. And I would like to have seen it already. And I hope that we get it soon. Rapid, sensitive, specific home testing even one that you might not even need a prescription for so that people can have within their own power to know whether or not it isn't is highly sensitive is the other but it is very helpful, particularly if you do it over and over again. I hope we get that soon. And Dr Fauci, New York City public School shut down again earlier this month. I know your default position is that you'd like to see the skull schools open. But how do you make that happen? And how would you advise the incoming Biden administration on getting a sort of unified response? Well, you know, Martha, that's a good question. We get asked that all the time. You know, we say it not being facetiously as a sound bite or anything, but you know Close the bars and keep the school's open is what we really say..

That you've really got to understand the importance of trying to prevent further spread and further surge that maybe when you go back to where you came from If it's possible to quarantine yourself for a period of time, or even get tested to make sure that you're not bringing infection back to another place being another home or another family. Having said that we have to be careful now because they're almost certainly is going to be an uptick because of what has happened with the travel. We understand. The importance of family is getting together and it's just something that we have to deal with that we likely will have an increase in cases as we get into the colder weeks. Of the winter and as we approach the Christmas season Please don't forget the standard public health measures that we talk about The reason I say that Martha and almost plead with people is that we do know that it does work. Doctor fat, she pleaded. Before the beginning. Yeah, Doc Doctor Fauci. You have said that again and again and again. We saw all those people traveling. So you know what's coming. And with Christmas just around the corner, do you think will be under the same restrictions that you recommended? On Thanksgiving going into Christmas. You know, Mother, I can't see how we're not gonna have the same thing because when you have the kind of inflection that we have, it doesn't all of a sudden turn around like that. So clearly in the next few weeks, we're going to have the same sort of thing. And perhaps even two or three weeks down the line mark that we may see a surge upon a surge. You know, we don't want to frighten people. But that's just the reality. We said that these things would happen. As we got into the cold weather, and as we began traveling, and they've happened, it's gonna happen again. So I cannot see all of a sudden a relax ation of the kinds of recommendations or restrictions because we're getting into colder weather and enough in even larger holiday season as people travel to come back and forth. For Christmas, so I don't see a relax ation of the kind of recommendations and restrictions that we've made and Dr Factory, the Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down New York's Covad restrictions on religious gatherings in the state. How concerned are you about legal challenges to pandemic restrictions going forward? Well, I mean, they happened, Martha. There's nothing I could do about it. I just keep saying that when people ask me for Opinions of specific things rather than make a comment on a specific things. I can just say it doesn't matter who you are, where you are when you have congregate settings, particularly indoors when people are not wearing masks. That is a considerable risk for acquisition and spread of infection, No matter what the circumstances that is a risk. California Santa Clara County is announcing several changes to existing directives to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Santa Clara County Health officer Dr Sarah Cody says the new changes will include limited capacity inside businesses, reduce sizes of outdoor gatherings and discouraging leisure and non essential travel. The decisions that we are making are extraordinarily difficult ones. We have come to a place where our cases and are hospitalizations are so high that we must do something to settle things down. This comes after the county recently saw a record highs in both single day confirmed cases and covert 19 related hospitalizations. People entering the county will also have to quarantine for 14 days upon return from travel of more than 150 miles. The changes go into effect tomorrow and will last through December. 21st Your money at 20 and 50 past the hour on Co Moh news. Almost Money report is sponsored by Propel Insurance from ABC News..

"Now Live is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr Anthony Fauci. Dr Fauci. Welcome back to this week. The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down New York's Covad restrictions on religious gatherings in the state. How concerned are you about legal challenges to pandemic restrictions going forward? Well, I mean, they happened, Martha. There's nothing I could do about it. I just keep saying that when people ask me for Opinions of specific things rather than make a comment on a specific things. I could just say it doesn't matter who you are where you are, when you have congregate settings, particularly indoors. When people are not wearing masks, that is a considerable risk for acquisition and spread of infection, no matter what the circumstances that is a risk. And you said there should be more regular testing available for asymptomatic people. How soon do you think before Americans could have inexpensive home tests? And why haven't they so far? Well, I hope it's sooner rather than later, Martha. I mean they obviously we've done better in testing than we did early on in the beginning. But you're talking about different kinds and different motivations and different objectives of testing. If you're trying to find out if a person is infected either for contact tracing or what have you then you want a highly sensitive test that might take a day or two to get a result back. When you're trying to find out what the extent of the community spread is that is driven very clearly, at least in part by asymptomatic spread, so we need to know the extent of the asymptomatic. The only way you know that is what you just asked for. And I would like to have seen it already. And I hope that we get it soon. Rapid, sensitive, specific home testing even one that you might not even need a prescription for so that people can have within their own power to know whether or not it is in his highly sensitive is the other, but it is very helpful, particularly if you do it over and over again. I hope we get that soon. And Dr Fauci in New York City Public school shut down again earlier this month. I know your default position is that you'd like to see the skull schools open. But how do you make that happen? And how would you advise the incoming Biden administration on getting a sort of unified response? Well, you know, Martha, that's a good question. We get asked that all the time. You know, we say it not being facetiously as a sound bite or anything, but you know, Closed the boss and keep the school's open is what we really say. Obviously, you don't have one size fits all. But as I said in the past, and as you accurately quoted me The default position should be to try his best this possible within reason to keep the Children in school to get them back to school. The best way to ensure the safety of the Children in school is to get the community level of spread low. So if you mitigate the things that you know, are causing spread In a very, very profound way in a robust way. If you bring that down, you will then indirectly and ultimately protect the Children in the school because the community level is determined how things go across the board. So my feeling would be the same thing. If you look at the data, the spread among Children and from Children is not really very big at all, not like one would have suspected. So let's try to get the kids back. But let's try to mitigate the things that maintain and and just push the kind of community spread that we're trying to avoid. And those other things that you know well, the bars the restaurants where you have capacity seating indoors without masks. Those of the things that drive the community spread, not the schools and and Dr fracture. You talked about the vaccine and the availability of the vaccine. The government Can't force everyone to take the vaccine. So what about schools? Companies? Employers? Can they mandate of vaccine like in other vaccines? You know any individual group command eight vaccines in certain ways, Martha, It's not. I believe going to come centrally. I don't want to get ahead of the game there, but I doubt that. That would happen. For example, right now, myself. I mean, I'm at the NIH Clinical Center. I'm a physician. I see patients. I have to get the influenza vaccine or I'm not gonna be able to see patients, so individual units be they hospitals or other organizations. Can't do that. It's within their right to say. If you want to work with us, you're gonna have to get a vaccine. But that's not going to be, I believe, essentially mandated process and Dr Factory. There are concerns about the anti vaccination movement and infectious to see disease specialists in Boston, telling the Boston Globe the same energy that was placed into development and distribution of a Corona virus. Vaccine should have been placed in messaging and community engagement. Do you agree with that? Oh, absolutely. We have to engage the community. Martha B. Because we do have a degree of anti vax to begin with. But then there's skepticism about this vaccine. So we've got to be able to get out there get community people who the community trust to show two things. The process of the development of this vaccine has been one that has been scientifically sound safety has not been compromised. Scientific integrity has not been compromised and the process Of determining whether it works. Whether it's safe and effective, has been independent by independent bodies and transparent. We've got to get the community the broad community of the United States to see that and appreciate that. And how could be we'd be sure there won't be prolonged side effects from this vaccine. Well, you know, Martin, the one thing you've got to admit that in any intervention, there might be a side effect. The history of vaccine ology that we know for decades and decades. Is that when you talk about prolonged side effects that's very rare and the side effects that occurred that are beyond the immediate pain in the arm and the fever and things like that. Generally occur when you look at like 95% of the time between maybe 30 and 45 days, which is the exact reason why the FDA said that they would not want Tonto issue and you a or approve anyway and emergency use organization until 60 days after half of the people in a trial Have gone from their last dose. So already, the FDA has baked into the process, a safety mechanism to make sure that you have historically overwhelming chance that you're not gonna have a very late effect. Having said that also, you don't just forget about it. Once the trial is over, you have one or two years of the trial follow up. In addition to post trial follow up So that's something that is very, very high priority is the immediate intermediate and long term safety of these vaccines. It's not something that's being disregarded. Okay. Thanks so much for joining us this morning, Dr Fauci. It's always great to see you. We'll be right
