But I also think, well, yeah, it's just bloody hard. And I mean, it is extraordinary what he's done. And his team had t-shirts. I'm less into that. I'm less into the team, t-shirts, to be quite honest with you. That I'm not a great fan of. He's the one who's done it. You know, in order to be in that team, weren't there for like the first 6 times. I'm not so into that. I'm all right with him. Do whatever you want but I don't know. I don't like it. No, I don't love it either. Great. Can you just weigh in on whether you think there was a calendar slam jacket? I hadn't thought about that, but now I'm really, I really want to desperate to know. So where is it, David? Did he burn it? Well, he's saving it for this year. Well, what about Serena Williams? Did she have one? Serena's never done a number. On an item of clothing. Okay. I remember these things, David. She's heard the whole, you know, cost it, you know, name on the shoes and stuff, but they all do that. Imagine if there was like a very specific to the number. I'm just wondering if there's like somewhere in tennis towers somewhere, a lost property bin full of mist moments, like tweets that live in drafts. Absolutely. Exactly. Welcome to my world David. This is all I can think about. It's a good talk. It's a podcast in there. Unused items of naff clothing. Great, everyone's tuning in. What did we think? We've alluded to those celebrations, Djokovic on the court. They scenes of him. Well, there's a couple of things here. There is the initial walking over to his play a box and pointing towards his head, his heart, and his testicles. Which is also a sort of thing that I remember our careers. He didn't do it. He didn't point to his testicles. But he did do a post. I thought jackets was lowering. So we said we've said testicles now three times on this podcast. But it sort of works a bit better in Spanish because it's three C's. It's cabet that got a thon and cojones. Okay, so it's a sort of it's a rolls off the tongue a bit more and close emojis, didn't he? No, that possibility. Yeah. I feel like in emoji form and in pointing form. I don't really need it. I did think Carlos, you know, I think quite highly I could do without that emoji. Thank you for not flagging that to my attention at the time. No, I knew you wouldn't like it. This is not specific to Djokovic, everybody uses that I know everyone's rolling their eyes at this is not the time to have this rant. But the gendered nature of that word, it's damaging. It's really damaging language matters, the fact that what you mean is courage. But by calling it balls, you are making it something specifically male. Exclusively and specifically male and that is damaging. It's the very I know Djokovic isn't thinking that when he's pointing to his testicles. I know nobody's thinking. When they use that term, it's totally unconscious, but that's the very definition of unconscious bias. This stuff matters, I've had to retrain myself. I used to say it, but I don't say it anymore. Me neither. Actually, because you pointed out to me a while back. Yeah, and I think if it's never occurred to you, I think that's I use gutsy now. Absolutely. Just use a non gendered term. It's very easy. And just there's no need to point. I don't think. No. There's really not. And then I'm going to attempt to raise the tone again. In that moment, though, I reckon. Well, well, the collapse in the player's box. Yeah, that was something, wasn't it? Was really something, given how, frankly, unremarkable the match had been. In lots of ways, is a tennis match, it wasn't that great. Then you had this moment which I've never seen anything like that. It was happening just below us. And so we could see that something was happening. I could see him climbing on the rails of the box and doing that. Well I've raised it, raising his hand above his head and I've got a close up because I've got beating. I've got the TV pictures at the time. And yeah, I mean, he was quite precarious what he was trying to do to get in there and then they helped him in. And then it was just a mass scrum of celebration, bear hugs with about 8 people at the same time, and then a really heartfelt hug with his brother that lasted forever and his mom as well. And you could see that he was starting to become really emotion at that point. And then it was almost like he passed out with the emotion and he just sort of his energy just drained from him and he had to lie down, sobbing and he couldn't he couldn't handle it. He just couldn't handle the amount he's being carrying around with him, I suspect, you know, in order to function and you can have whatever opinions you have about the hamstring or not the way he handles no matter what, this was a lot of pressure he's carrying around and it just all came out in that moment. And yeah, and for about a minute or two, he was on his back and they were trying to just sort of almost bring him round or just help him to kind of compose himself again and then he got back down onto the court. And then he goes and sits on the chair and sobs into the towel for a good period of time. I mean, it was an extraordinary release of emotion. Yeah. I can relate to it. I think in one or two, just very different situations in my life when I've tried to be strong about something and not not let anything get to me and then you finally reach a point where you can take them or you reach the end or whatever it might be and you just sort of let it go. It was yeah it was quite a moment, wasn't it? 7 or

"The New York Times, a friend of this parish, and he was saying he was explaining to the audience why Novak Djokovic is the most interesting of the big three. And this is why it might also be the same reasons why he's the least loved, or the least universally liked, but all of those things make him the most interesting psychologically of the three. Now people will, you know, everybody will find that to be the case. But I think there's a very strong argument for that. It's complex. I mean, Chris wrote that in his own book about Roger Federer. It was making of the master, but he did sections on all of the big three and various other people that Federer would have come into touch with and he was very clear. Djokovic is so interesting to cover. You could never get bored. Of just trying to find out how did we get from there to there in his world? And he and Nadal, who were both now tied on 22 major titles, they are two supreme competitors, the like of which I've barely ever seen ever in any other sport. But in two completely different ways, aren't they? You feel like Nadal is this incredible competitor because it competitor because he has this unparalleled ability to stay in the present. To just this point, this moment this shot is everything. It's life or death to me in this split second. Djokovic is all about the macro, isn't it easiest, incredible competitive competitor because you feel like his perspective is always panoramic. It's always on the bigger picture and what it means for his legacy and his greatness and what it will mean in Serbia and all of that. All about the big picture. Absolutely. He will have lapses. He will disappear mentally for a period of time because he's not lighting it all. He can't do that. But what he can do then is suddenly pull it back and be even more incredible when a player least expects it because he's just managed to focus again. Sort of the same headline trait, but manifesting in two completely different ways. It's fascinating, and of course, you know, amplified in how fascinating it is by the fact that they're both now tied on 22, which is a moment to talk about the race. Yes, which is your moment to shine. I must say Goran managed to make it sound a little bit dull by calling it a handball match. Twice. I'm sure I'm sure there's lots of people that enjoy handball. Handball is huge. I know Croatia. And I think he's probably getting the crazy score. Yeah, you know? I mean, that's not normal. It was a tough crowd for that. It was a bit. David gave me a briefing face like I see what you're getting at Goran. He was also trying to tell a few funnies as he was saying, and I thought I've got to give him a bit of support. But it's the first time Djokovic has had a share of the lead or he's always, he's always been behind. Well, I think maybe we've been on 2020. They've all been on 20 first time he's had a share of the lead with just one other person. Wow. And of course, I thought gorham put it well when he said, you know, this was this was Djokovic's home court, you know, this is sort of his hold of serve, if you like, and now it's now it's over to Roland Garros, which is Nadal's home court and can Djokovic break. And I think such a good. I think the eggs Djokovic has got is he's kind of got two home courts at the moment because you know he's extremely dominant at Wimbledon as well. He's won there every time since what 2018? Yeah, so I think it's advantage Djokovic and I also think Catherine we were talking about this in the in the taxi on the way in to Melbourne park today. Like the Australian opening anti hero come on, which was we're talking about the Grand Slam race listening to Taylor Swift. It was all of our favorite things. Thanks for the clarification. But I think the Australian open in the men's game has really set the tone for the season because Federer Nadal and Djokovic have had such a grip on that event. That we haven't started the season with an unexpected winner and it's like, oh, okay, now there's a chance for these youngsters. It's like every year we start clean and one of the big three wins the Australian open and it's like, oh, okay, so this is happening again. They're sort of gatekeeping those slams. And now we're on to Roland Garros and Wimbledon, which favored Nadal on clay, Djokovic on grass. As I've just said, that's their home courts as well. Whereas if Djokovic had lost tonight, he wouldn't be tied and suddenly, you know, since the passes won a slam. And it would have been he's emboldened. Perhaps felt like a victory. You could imagine sort of Felix or jail and the rest of them punching the air like it's possible. Yes. There's a sort of trickle down effect. Absolutely. But as it is, the tone has been set again. Djokovic is way better than everyone else who was here. Obviously, Nadal is compromised at the moment. And the idea of Novak Djokovic not winning more slams this season right now feels kind of preposterous. You know, he's playing so well. And you can almost do his little power play of saying I'll tell you what you lot just toodle off to in new miles of Miami. I'll just put my feet up and then see you and we get down to the grand slams again. Imagine this is

"Com forward slash podcast. Now then. Novak Djokovic. It's quite good in there. I mean, he's so much better than everybody else. With alcaraz on the sidelines and with Nadal, an unknown quantity physically, he is just so much better than everybody else. That's the long and short of it. Yeah, I mean, I think the fact that he played surpass when sits about was coming into this match in really good form. And fresh. There was nothing wrong with him. He was fine. He had to deal with the occasion. But so did Djokovic, obviously massively more experienced and aside from a wobble in the second set when Djokovic got really, really stressed. Once he started to relax, I mean, and I felt like he was ultra focused and composed in the first set, stressed in the second and then he relaxed in the third because it all started to flow. And he just he can do things to an opponent he can upset and unsettle an opponent unlike anybody else. I think, and then he also has a gear when he himself relaxes and he can actually just wipe the floor with you. Even if you're playing well. Because in the final set tiebreak, they were both playing well at the same time. And I'm watching Djokovic, I wasn't commentating on that said I was watching him up close and I was thinking, sits the passes, making miracles happen to hold onto his serve to force this tie break because I could see the look in Djokovic's eyes. Now he's unencumbered. He's no longer bothered by all these things that are being worrying him. He's just letting it flow and I think that that's nigh on unbeatable on hardcourt. And sits the past through the lot for about ten minutes there and he didn't really get close because Djokovic is just too good. I thought this match would be about how much Djokovic could pick on and expose the sitter backhand and there was a lot of that and I do think this is the best backhand was exposed. You know, it made me feel naive about my takes having watched him against Karen hatcher of where, you know, his backend stood up to scrutiny, but a wasn't hitting that many of them and be the scrutiny wasn't that. Intense, quite frankly, nowhere near the scrutiny that Novak Djokovic applied to it today. I mean, the sound of the ball coming off the racket on that backhand side for the first set was sort of tinny and none of the hits felt clean. It was just sitting there begging to be hit and yes, that battle did exist. If Djokovic maneuvering the ball onto the sit to pass backhand, but Djokovic also out four handed Stefano sit to pass today and deliberately. That I was not expecting. That was unreal. A massively so. Yeah. Like, Djokovic forehand was a bigger weapon and also more reliable. I think was well over 20 unforced errors on the forehand Djokovic was a handful of unforced errors. And he was going for it. He wasn't being aggressive on that shot. Absolutely. And I think he wanted those forehand rallies as a way also to open up the sits of a back end. It's a classic. You've got to go to the strength to open up the weakness a bit more. And then doing so, he turned sits past his strength into a weakness and there were a lot of points in that second set in particular. Where I felt like finally sits a pass was playing the right sort of game style. It was pretty flat in the first set. So it's a pass. It was interesting their demeanors, Djokovic, as you said, David was calm and confident in that first set. Sits past didn't really show up. I didn't think. But he did start having a bit more impact in the second set. He started doing some damage with those ground strokes. But then on pretty much all the, all the big moments, he made errors, sits a pass. He didn't play well when it mattered. And it was an execution problem, I think, from today, I do genuine genuinely believe that sits a past stepped onto that court with a decent amount of belief that he could beat Novak Djokovic. He just didn't play well. I didn't think. And I think part of that is what we were saying the other night about how Djokovic makes you play badly and it's harder to play well against him than it is against other players for lots of reasons. But he also didn't seem to have the feel today, like it wasn't. It just wasn't there. I mean, that was the worst tiebreak I've ever seen. From both of them. We were like two points that went with dire. And he missed, I think he missed four, four hands in the first 6 points of that. But these weren't tough forehands by Stephanie sitz about. This is a guy with a great forehand who couldn't get it in. forehand that I was marveling over two days ago. I was, you know, I was drooling over it. I couldn't believe it. We spent ten minutes talking to Jim gorier about it yesterday. We got a fool. What is this shot? Was that other forehand that you had the other day? Imagine how he feels? It's funny though, stephanos did to pass and look that he came into press pretty quickly. There was a lot of sort of, I felt like in his press conference, he was trying to talk himself into feeling certain ways. He didn't want really to talk about how gutted he is. He was very much talking a good game about this being a good tournament overall. And, you know, wanting to look forward and not back. That's a direct quote I've already forgotten about the match. Djokovic beats Tsitsipas for 10th Australian Open, 22nd Slam

"Just feels great to be back in Australia back in Melbourne. It was at an exhibition match. His opponent. Djokovic was deported ahead of last year's Australian open for refusing to say whether he had been vaccinated for the coronavirus. Vaccination requirements have been dropped. Djokovic pointed out his first Grand Slam victory was at the Australian open. 15 years later, I'm here again and I'm competing at the high level, so I must be very grateful for this opportunity to be here. The Search for Meaning in 2022
"It's been quite a year and I want to summarize just some of the highlights Russia invading Ukraine. The Beijing Olympics, Novak Djokovic, Brown Jackson, the Canadian freedom trucker, truckers, the rise of the parents party overturning the mask mandate, roe versus wade being repealed. There was a lot of news where the items all throughout the year, but let's be honest. If you go back to some of the programs that we did earlier in the year, there was a kind of constant bend, a constant pivot towards the midterm elections. There were there was a lot of hope that was being put into the November midterm elections. 11 8. Now, it wouldn't be fair to say that it was all terrible, and that it was catastrophic across the board. But it was certainly a letdown. And I think a lot of you in this audience feel that and you see that. You thought that this would be a chance for us to reclaim the country that regular everyday citizens would be able to send a triumphant message and it just fell short. And it fell short in a very serious way, yes, we won the House of Representatives, the Senate we lost a seat in and so I mean, I look, I had this wonderful year in review that our team put together here, Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, Ron DeSantis was one of the winners of this year signing the Florida parental rights and education act. Roe versus wade was repealed praise God, even though Republicans didn't know how to deal with it politically. August, of course, remember Biden raided Mar-a-Lago. I thought it was one of the biggest political mistakes. We did not talk more about that raid during the midterm elections. Elon Musk bought Twitter this year, which was a big deal, probably a bigger deal than the midterm elections that allow us to talk openly about the vaccines and lockdowns, hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin. That was a huge victory for liberty. I'll be very honest personally the sabotage and the ambush of Kerry Lake was a very and still is a very difficult thing. For me to move on.

Djokovic says no hard feelings over Australian deportation
"Djokovic was deported almost 12 months ago after arriving unvaccinated against the coronavirus. It's great to be back in Australia. They were strict virus restrictions in place at the time. Djokovic says he still has difficulty forgetting his deportation. But it is a valuable life experience for me and something that, as I said, will stay there, but I have to move on. As I said, and coming back to Australia, speaks how I feel about this country, how I feel about playing here. Djokovic has won the Australian opener record 9 times, including the last three times he played. I really look forward playing there. You know, it's been my favorite slam and results are proving that. "Every now and then I did have moments of having to remind myself I'm not in The O2 Arena because I spent almost all my time inside. I was so rarely outside. Once I entered through the doors, it was sort of you're in now. And it's just so visually similar not just the court. What you see on the TV is how it is. It is a slightly smaller version of the O2 without the slightly weird soulless shopping center surrounding it with a incredibly depressing harvester. The one where the one where the person we all know that shouldn't be shouldn't be named went on a terrible date. That is something I've said on the podcast before, isn't it? I can't remember. I know I've heard the story before. Whether the other thousands that are listening right now have, I can't tell you. I think anyway, anyway. Yeah, it happens. We're all friends here. It's incredibly similar. And I get it. Because it is visually fantastic. It's hard to see how you could make it look better, but equally I would like it to develop a bit of identity. And I don't know if that'll happen. Don't know, be interesting to see. But look at works. It sells out pretty much every session. And. That was in a year with no Italians in either the singles or the doubles, I would have loved to see an Italian player. Play and the crowd responds to them. Hopefully, you'll be surprised if that didn't happen next year. I got to be honest, Matt, I don't have anything else to say about Novak Djokovic other than he looks in just sublime form. He goes into 2023, know any can play the Australian open now. And I'm absolutely thrilled at the prospect of watching it all unfold. You know. I have nothing else to say. Do you have anything else to say? Not really. I think he's become the oldest champion of this event by about 5 years. Like it really is. Really? It really is an outlier, I think Arthur Ashe reached a final of at a very similar age. But in terms of winners, Djokovic is about 5 years older than Federer was when federal won his last one. And actually now, if you sort of look at his 6 titles here, it kind of tells you the story of Djokovic's career in a way because he won one way back in Shanghai in two 1008, which I must say I do often forget that he won that, but that was a real breakthrough and obviously Djokovic had a big break through then he had that period of just utter dominance in London where he won four in a row. And now he's won one at 35 to underline his longevity, which has become such a such a sort of key factor of his career as well. So you can sort of chart his career, I think, through his through his results at this event and yeah, of course, I think even if he hadn't won this, he was already well set up for 2023, but it sort of confirms that, yeah, he's still the guy going into next year. It is consistently remarkable to me how little we talk about Djokovic's age. Because he is the youngest of the three. When you consider how it feels like Nadal is just sort of being held together somehow at the moment. And Murray is obviously got a metal joint in Federer's really can't move properly like it. And Djokovic just doesn't look any different at all. No. It is extraordinary. The oldest ever champion at this event, but I think there's a few things going on firstly that his age just so rarely occurs to you because exactly as you say, David, he looks the same. To fill the gaps in the schedule that are I'll say again, too short for napping. We've been running classic matches and a lot of those have involved no vet Djokovic and he looks the same. And I think the other thing is the goalposts have been moved. Age wise over the last 5 to ten years by Federer and Nadal and Djokovic as well. But because he's that bit younger, he's sort of, again, as is defined his career, he's following, he's chasing his hunting. But he is 35. Ted years ago, that would be all that we would talk about. Oh my God, he's doing this and he's 35. Yes, went on drag as he did it. He was such an outlier. But we barely mention it. And under agas wasn't doing this at 35. It's crazy. It really is. And as you said, age is affecting him the least, I think, out of all those players. Nadal, as you said, looks his age. He's defying it still, but he looks his age now and Federer didn't win this much when he was this age. Maybe just about the start of 2017. He was about this sort of age, but it does seem like Djokovic has still got so much time. And actually, I think obviously one of the big talking points of this year is how little Djokovic has played and obviously that has been entirely self inflicted. But what it has given him is time on the practice court, which you don't normally get and that might that might have, in a way, have helped him. If we think of if we think of a canister as Federer gave us that expression, not playing so much this year, okay, it's affected him because he didn't pay the two hard court slams, which he could have won. But in the long run, it might have helped him develop his game and his 30s, which you don't normally get to do. And just not sort of warm him out so much. And yeah, he just looks, he just looks fresh, doesn't he? Which isn't a word that you would normally associate with a 35 year old, I think. Just around off the Djokovic chat, I also think this is the point that we've made before a few weeks ago, perhaps, but I do think it's one unintended good consequence of Djokovic's

"It's one of the best streets out in a long time. And shouldn't feel comfortable on grass. She didn't really ever get in her mind to like a fake it till you make it place on grass for the thought she might. I thought she might just be like, look, I'm winning so much like how different congrats be. But for her, it kind of got in her head. And you could see that in the pandemic or COVID match where she was just like really shaky. But she got through that one, but not corneil. But how do you look back on how the streak ended first found tech and where it sets it up for her for going back into the hard courts? Actually, I get to play some clay, maybe in Warsaw first, potentially, maybe. Yeah. Yeah. It's hard to kind of be down on anyone, even the one on one losing in the third round of that considering how many matches you'd want in a row and I agree with you that yeah, she was already ringing with the lombards after the French Open and she was like, you know, I need a break. I'm probably not going to see me at the grocery store. She said, but you get the point. Yeah, so I wasn't really, it was surprising just how quickly it will happen and how that was against gournay, but yeah, I think the signs were there. And I think as we've discussed, I don't know, the something about just the way the street happened, the fact that I don't know went through so many WTA events and then arrived at the French Open, you know, still hadn't won a slam during the streak and I'm sure it was desperate to kind of almost validate it by winning Islamist as she kind of said afterwards to make it even more meaningful and then she just got over what she got through it and I think she just didn't have much left in the tank so she's been she's been on holiday in Italy and I think that will do her well and I think and hope that she'll come back and she comes back when it's right and not a moment too soon and then she'll be good. Credit to her also for setting up this exhibition charity event, which we've been hearing talk about for months now, which is finally got announced during Wimbledon. It's going to be in Kraków and she's going to play so that gets agar red Vancouver, which is pretty cool. It's all benefiting Ukraine and Ukraine and refugees and efforts there. So that's pretty pretty great. All right, boys time. The men's final Novak Djokovic won yet another Wimbledon hit 7th Wimbledon overall. His fourth Wimbledon in a row is 21st Grand Slam and wrote his first Grand Slam of the year. Beating Nicholas helmy curios in four sets in the final curious one, the first set Drake which lost the first set in his final and his semifinal against cam nori and in his quarterfinal against Henry lost the first two shots against the center. It came back each time. He's been so good and he's like so clearly a master of even if he says he's the happy best of three. He's on the record with that. I'll put that out there. He's so good at managing the best if I match. That's not curios actually said afterwards. When I played beat him before both times, it was invested three and when you win the first set against him there, he starts feeling more scoreboard pressure and he gets like he's not as free, whereas here, who's just set and it's like no big deal and he can still stay just as sharp and just as free and it's harder to make these big players scared. And that's what we saw repeatedly with a lot of players and this big three sort of error, especially Djokovic at all, maybe especially. They just don't get phased by dropping sets. They're just like, you're still so far from the finish line when you want to first that which is why I hate the format. Just like, why have meaningless sets? Anyway, Djokovic wins again. Is there much new to say about Djokovic? We covered most. We have covered most of its 21 grand slams on the show before. Or anything new strike you during this run. I mean, not in your in terms of him being an incredible tennis player and better than everyone else. And I don't just taste adaptation to grass and how this has become, you know, we're talking about this. It's become his second best damn and now he has 7. He's so good on this surf. But now he has 7, 7. 20 years ago, people thought that both San Francisco is 14 times in general, and it's 7. Wimbledon titles here were kind of like, you know, people thought that was special. Yeah. It is no longer special. People that's harsh, but yeah, I mean, in comparison, as I said, this is his second best lamb, it's not his number one. But yeah, he's kind of making his own error here, his own, this is his period. It's four in a row, and he, you know, I'm sure he'll be coming back to gunning for Federer, which is crazy to think about, so there was a better a.m. so yeah, he's stunning and he's played extremely well. I thought today against curios, he was very, very, very, very, very good. One blip in the first set on his serve and curios was playing, everything was flowing with curiosity played really well. But from the beginning of the second set, Djokovic just kind of just locked down his game completely the one thing he was really struggling with was reading curiosity.

Sam, let's just recap this year, right? Novak Djokovic has 20 Grand Slam titles. He has the record for time spent as the number one player in the world. Now at 370 weeks and counting, he is just ridiculously talented he is remarkably decorated as a tennis player. And so the question for me, even beyond the bread and the health and COVID stuff, is why he has not been revered anywhere close to Federer and Nadal. Yeah, it's not like he's the only really talented athlete in the world who has a pretty unusual perspective or goes away from the mainstream on some of his views, right? I mean, he is certainly not alone in that regard. Tom Brady's pretty popular. But Djokovic has never been able to sort of get to that level of adoration that Federer and Nadal have had almost their entire careers. And I think in the beginning, part of it was that he was the disruptor, right? He was the guy who was coming in to sort of break up this Federer Nadal thing. And the various followings that Federer Nadal have are really strong and really well established. And so Djokovic was this kind of like new guy in town and I think, you know, in the beginning, there was a lot of like, okay, well, things are going pretty well with Federer at all. We like these guys. Who's this other guy? But then even as he became more successful, even as he began to beat these guys with some regularity, it still didn't change. And so I think a lot of people around Djokovic in my reporting, I got the sense that there is still this feeling that there's a little bit of an Eastern Bloc issue here, right? Tennis is a traditional sport. It's covered largely by a media that has its footprint in Western Europe, Australia and the United States. And the sort of coverage bends towards the players that fit that mold. And Federer, who's like, you know, out of a Swiss watch commercial from diapers. He fits that mold perfectly. And Nadal, you know, Spanish flair, creativity, personality, bandanna, biceps. Yes. All of it. He fits perfectly. And Djokovic doesn't, and Serbia doesn't. This is former Yugoslavia Djokovic was an outsider in a lot of ways. He describes himself as a child of war. When Djokovic was growing up as a 9, ten, 11, 12 year old, there were bombs dropping. There were wars being fought. The first bombing of its kind in NATO history. On March 24 1999, western nations carried out their threat against Serbia and began the biggest military conflict on Serbian soil since World War II. His 12th birthday party Pablo was at a tennis club in Belgrade and literally as his parents are leading the kids in singing happy birthday. Warplanes are flying overhead. They were in the midst of the NATO bombings that lasted for 78 nights. Yeah, the U.S. led NATO bombings incidentally. Exactly a 100%. At the time, NATO was trying to defeat slobodan milosevic and he was a dictator and there was all types of ethnic cleansing. I mean, this is real stuff. While I was in Belgrade, Pablo, I actually went to the apartment building where his grandfather had an apartment where Djokovic spent so many of those nights. And the super in that building agreed to open the bunker up for me. I had never been in a bunker like this before, but it was really remarkable, you know, you go down these stairs and he pulls up in this giant steel door and you go in and the smell is the thing that I'll remember most. It's just musty, your underground, it's very cramped, literally the residents of the building Pablo had set up a stationary bike and Jerry rigged this like rudimentary electrical setup where one person would peddle on the stationary bike and that would provide enough power to keep just a few lightbulbs lit. All the way through the night. It was really hard for me to imagine young children. Night after night, in a place like this. And you're a 12 year old and all you're trying to do is find a place to play tennis. He and his coach, during these bombings, every morning they would get up and they would go around Belgrade, looking for the sites that were the most damaged, the ones where there were craters in the ground from the night before, and they would try to play tennis near that damage because they figured what are the chances that NATO's gonna bomb the same area of the city two days in a row. Think about what that does to a kid, right? Think about what that does to the way that he sees the world around him, the way he sees the western world. And so I think that when Djokovic reached the levels that he wanted to reach in professional tennis, he brought two professional tennis and attitude and a perspective that was really different than what XS had seen before. And I think the bottom line is there was a lot of reticence to accept that. So this guy who comes from that place, how do you think that's affected the way Novak Djokovic portrays himself to the public? You know, Pablo, I think there is this push pull, right? Because he wants to be seen as this proud Serbian, this guy who has helped bring his country forward, that isn't the way that we remember the former Yugoslavia. So he wants to be that, but he also wants to fit in desperately. And when I think about that, I think back to early in his career, where, you know, he was known as like the Joker, the jester, right? This was a guy who was sort of known for being good at tennis, but also being really good at doing funny impressions of other players, right? I mean, you can imagine it. They're all over YouTube, right? He would go out on court and he would he was good at him. He was good at them. He would pretend to be to be Nadal and he would fidget and he touched his headband and he'd pick his wedgie before every point, just like Nadal does and he even put on like a tennis skirt and tried to portray Serena Williams at one point. And it was kind of like, okay, it was cool. It was like, all right, like you said, he was pretty good at it, but it also kind of smacked of, hey guys, look at this party trick that I can do, you know? Maybe you don't like where I'm from. Maybe I'm a little different, so let me just show you that I'm the funny man. And I think that that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Sure, he made some fans because of it, but I'll tell you this, Pablo and I know it's a little bit random. When I was in Belgrade, I met up with darko militant, right? Who was another Serbian athlete who couldn't quite get American fans to like him the way that he would have liked. Yeah, if anyone, Sam can relate to the struggle to be liked in America, it is darko. It is the man who in the 2003 NBA draft was chosen number two overall behind LeBron James, but ahead of Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. And yeah, who is now considered, by the way, maybe the biggest bust in NBA history. Exactly, right. And so I did a story on darko years ago and I stayed in touch with him. So I looked him up when I was there. And while we were catching up, I asked him what he thought of Djokovic, and he brought up the impressions. He was like, to me, when I saw that, it just made me realize how hard this guy is trying. Darko tried any number of things to fit into American culture and with American fans. And pretty much none of them worked. And so what he said to me was, look, I know. I know this never works, okay? You can try as much as you want. You can do all of these things. You can be the funny man, but it's not going to work. And after I had that lunch with darko, a couple of days later, I was with Djokovic's friend, Victor Trotsky, and I told him about what darko had said. And I said, do you think what darko's saying makes sense? And Victor Trotsky said to me, yeah, it does. He said, you know, I don't know why this matters so much to him. It shouldn't matter to him, but it does. It's a 6th title. For Djokovic in Rome, a 38th masters trophy. But maybe more importantly for Novak and sends a message to his rivals ahead of Paris. So Sam, it's important to note here that after he loses in humiliating fashion at home in Serbia in that tournament, he wins outright the Italian open all of which portends better for him, heading into Roland Garros, heading into the French Open. So what are the expectations for this guy as we enter the weekend? I think like I was saying at the beginning, right? Like the French Open is his return to the big stage. You know, the sort of casual sports world doesn't really pay attention to tennis other than the four majors. And this is one of those. And I think if you were looking for, okay, how is Djokovic doing as he kind of steps back onto stage, he's doing well. I mean, winning the Italian open and doing it in a fairly dominant fashion, which he did, obviously portends good things for him and he's feeling better about his game. I think the one thing I would say though is that he still hasn't played that many matches, you know? He still played maybe 60% of the number of sets he would have played like in a regular year and a regular schedule. And so the fitness, which is the biggest issue that he's had, right? Remember he was struggling with the virus, the aftermath of the virus, the metabolism. Now he's going into a tournament where he's going to have to win 7 best of 5 matches on clay. The French Open is the Grand Slam that takes the most out of you in a lot of ways because those matches are long. They are slogs, and Djokovic generally fitnesses one of his strengths, but I think we've seen over the course of this year so far in Serbia and elsewhere that he still trying to find his way in that regard. So if Djokovic is going to struggle, Sam, if you struggle to regain his own God powers. What is the reaction going to be? I mean, what's the reaction if you flames out and he is struggling in that way? What's the reaction if you actually pulls it off? Imagine that sort of contrast for me. I think that if he flames out, then I think there will be a lot of attention paid to what happened in January again. The mismatches, the isolation, the time spent having to be on his own as opposed to playing in tournaments that he otherwise would have played in, I think that will all be revisited. There's no doubt that those two things will be linked. And I think appropriately so. If he wins, I think it will be sort of a more positive spin on the same thing. Look what happened to him in January, and now he's managed to work his way all the way back to the level that he was before, and he wins in Paris again. To me, Pablo, the bigger issue is, what does this do for Novak Djokovic writ large, right? What will happen to Novak Djokovic and the way that he is seen and the way he sees himself after Paris. I think the reality is, is that anybody that thought that he was a villain, both before and because of what happened in Australia is still going to think that whether he wins at Roland Garros or not. And so Djokovic tells himself, hey, keep winning. Keep fighting. You'll finally get the adulation, the love that you've been chasing, I'm not so sure that even if he pulls off another.

For the vast majority of the casual sports fans, the ones who don't watch tennis every week, the French Open, which begins this weekend is going to be the first time that they've thought about Novak Djokovic since that story in January. In a lot of ways, it's his reentry onto the biggest stage. But I also think from Djokovic's perspective, it's an opportunity to try to write the reputation that took a hit clearly in January. This is a guy Pablo, who has been a divisive figure in tennis for a long time. And frankly, he wishes that he were seen in the same way that Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal are. He wants to be this beloved figure and he's not. The cruel irony of wanting to be liked is that all of that wanting. All of that thirst. It all tends to be the problem. It tends to be at least one big reason why lots of people are disliked in the first place. But Novak Djokovic is worth mentioning is not most people. The guy is the number one tennis player in the world at age 34 after starting out in his native Serbia. Novak Djokovic is also arguably the number one tennis player of all time. Even after everything that happened in Australia this year. So today, Sam Borden helps us understand the full story of Novak Djokovic. Who was trying to rewrite it. As we speak. I'm Pablo Torre. It's Friday, may 20th. This is ESPN daily. So Sam, I want to get into Serbia with you where you just were, but before we get there, we need to go back to Australia, a place that Novak Djokovic clearly has no real desire to return to, I would argue after what happened a couple months ago in January at the Australian open because it was supposed to be a celebration for the guy and it became something else that I'm still trying to understand. Something else that is still kind of confusing. So what exactly happened there? Pablo, you're definitely not the only one that was confused by what happened there. It's funny. I was talking to my wife who is not a sports fan before I went to Serbia and I said, oh, I'm going to do this story about Novak Djokovic and she said, oh, that's the guy that tried to sneak into Australia, right? Because that was what she took away from the sort of massive coverage of what happened. In January, and I think that like you like her, a lot of people didn't really follow all of the twists and turns that that whole saga took because it was pretty confusing. The basic premise of what happened is that Australia had and has really intense COVID protocols in terms of who is allowed to enter that country. And at that time, if you were unvaccinated, much like in the United States, if you're not a citizen, coming into the country wasn't allowed. But Djokovic showed up to play the Australian open because he had been offered an exemption by the state government in Melbourne where the open is held that said, okay, fill out these forms and let us know about your COVID history. He'd had COVID in December and you'll be allowed to enter and play in the tournament. The most important thing to understand about Djokovic's situation is that he was offered that invitation by the state government and for most of the pandemic, this various states in Australia had been left alone by the federal government to make those kinds of entry decisions on their own. Right. So Djokovic arrived in Melbourne, under the assumption that his exemption would be fine. He would go through immigration at the airport, like everybody else, and he would go to Melbourne and play in the open. While he was en route to Australia, a real social media uproar happened where lots of Australian citizens, all of a sudden, were kind of like, wait a minute. My family can't come to Australia if they're not vaccinated, why is this guy this Serbian allowed to come to Australia when he's not vaccinated? I think it's a disgrace. We've all done the right thing we've all gone out and got our jobs and our boosters and we have someone that's come from overseas and all of a sudden he's been exempt and can play and I think it's an absolute disgrace and I won't be watching it. There was a real uprising and so while.

I think Madison keys top level tennis is right there. But how confident are you that you're going to see the same tennis that one of the Adelaide title over the next two weeks? I'm not. And in the case of Novak Djokovic, who is on the cusp of becoming the most winning champion in the history of men's tennis, the stakes literally couldn't be any higher. I mean, should we be giving athletes like him a bit more of, I don't know, a pass or some leeway for hesitating to mess with their physiology? I think that the government should do anything in their power to make life as inconvenient for unvaccinated people as possible. So like, practically, no, but philosophically, yeah, cut them a break. "A case, then that's basically game set and match fraud. But as the situation stands, the federal immigration minister Alex hawk has this discretionary power to re cancel Novak Djokovic's Visa and send him home. And in the meantime, since this decision to let Novak stay on Monday in Australia, what have we learned about how he got a medical exemption to begin with? What we've learned since then is that Novak Djokovic had a test and tested positive to coronavirus on the 16th of December that was part of this exemption he was given. So that was certainly the impression that he was given from tennis Australia. If he had tested positive at any point, in fact, in the last 6 months, that enables you to defer your vaccination and to enter Australia without having the vaccination proof. But what's emerged is a number of photos of Novak Djokovic in the days following showing he attending public events. I think there's an event with kids who are learning to play tennis is photographed with them, shaking their hands. Arms around their shoulders. No mask. Wow. He also takes some press photos for the publication to keep and we don't know when Djokovic was notified of that positive result mind you. But alongside these photos, it's also emerged that it appears as though he hasn't quarantined for the 14 days as per the requirement when you do return a positive results in Serbia. It's also emerged that despite declaring on his travel declaration form in arriving in Australia that he hasn't traveled in the past 14 days, it appears he has. It appears he's traveled from Belgrade to Spain in the last two weeks. So questions have emerged basically asking whether Novak Djokovic has lied. So he's either lying about a positive test result or perhaps a one man super spreading road show. It doesn't look good either way. Does it really? And coincidentally, if he does get on that court, he may very well become the most winning tennis player in the history of the men's game. And that's the thing that's what's at stake here is that politics and the drama aside, there is so much at stake for Novak Djokovic. At the moment he sits on 20 Grand Slam singles titles along with the great Raphael Nadal, the great Roger Federer, but of course Roger Federer is not here in Melbourne for this year's tournament. He's recovering from injury and he couldn't make it out this year. Rafael Nadal's here despite testing positive to COVID-19 recently, but of course he's the king of clay. And so Novak Djokovic, this is his domain. He's won this title, this Grand Slam 9 times, which is very, very impressive and deity won at last year. He's fit and healthy and ready to go as hard from contracting COVID-19 seemingly a couple of weeks ago. And so, you know, if there wasn't this drama and if you were a betting man, you'd be putting your money on Novak Djokovic to win the Australian open this year..

"And it's notable here that at last year's Australian open. You know, athletes were given an exception and that was controversial, right? Totally, if there's a sniff of double standards in Australia, then there's fuel. We've got a very much a case of the tall poppy syndrome. So that's why I like Djokovic. What's the top it should be? Well, if you're basically you'll cut you down if you're too good. And so Novak Djokovic is a guy who's good, right? But he kind of shows it in his attitude in some ways, and he's quite a confident fella. And so I think not being vaccinated aside, he's quite a contentious figure in the Australian consciousness. And so if there's a sniff of double standards and these stars, these athletes getting some exception and we don't like it. So last year's tournament, as you suggest, was pretty contentious in itself. And many are very suspicious of all these players arriving with the risk of an increase in community transmission of COVID, which is virtually been eradicated. And they're in a really, really good situation compared to anybody else who's quarantining in Australia, including Australia's returning home, not only are they allowed out, but they're also in 5 star hotels. In this year, there's been an expectation it would go ahead, but really preparations have been quite overshadowed by this doubt surrounding Novak Djokovic's vaccination status. Djokovic said, quote, personally, I'm opposed to vaccination. And I wouldn't want to be forced by someone to take a vaccine in order to be able to travel. The media here have repeatedly covered how he's been deliberately opaque and that he's refused to say if he's paying jobs, but he had said he'd been waiting out for tennis Australia and the governments here to outline the rules for the tournament. So that's a setup. Where does this current controversy begin? So on the night prior to him leaving to fly to Australia, he posted on Instagram, a photo of him with some tennis bags packed that looked like it was outside an airport. You know, almost on the tarmac basically. And he's post basically said, you know, happy new year, happy and healthy. Thanks for your support. Just wanted to let you know that I'm headed down under with an exemption permission. Interesting phrasing there. So that really put in motion a number of fresh headlines because we weren't quite expecting that to be honest. Before he arrived, Australia's prime minister had a warning. We await his presentation and what evidence he provides to support that. If that evidence is insufficient, then he might be treated any different to anyone else. And he'll be on the next blind home. He lands at about half past the 11 on Wednesday night last week. And he's, in fact, produced his certificate or his documents prior to boarding the plane that emerged in the court case and then he was coming through customs through border force as we call it in Australia immigration authorities and he produces the documents which have a letterhead of tennis Australia and he produces this so called medical exemption and border force unhappy. They're not happy with the documents he's produced and he's detained. His father says that he's been detained in a room without his phone under armed guard and effectively it's a bit of a limbo situation and the media is waiting outside where we think Novak Djokovic is being effectively detained by immigration authorities, and then we get the word from the government, the Commonwealth government that is, which is an important distinction here that they've decided to revoke his Visa. Why is the Commonwealth government an important distinction? It's a quite a bureaucratic country, Australia in many ways. We have state governments and we have like councils and we also have a federal government, a Commonwealth government. It's important in this case because they've made the decision the Commonwealth government to rescind his Visa, but he had been granted this medical exemption via two medical panels established by tennis Australia and by the health department in the state of Victoria, so effectively the Victorian government. Seemingly, for Novak Djokovic, he's been given the all clear, the green lot from not one but two medical independent medical bodies he's got to Australia and then the federal government denies that exemption. And then what proceeds is just a litany of buck passing. Politicians hand bowling, tennis officials, handballing, the issue around, nobody really wanted to touch it at that point. And in the meantime, you've got one of the biggest tennis stars in the world. One of the most legendary athletes to play the game basically in some sort of immigration jail? You can put it that way. I mean, he's taken from Melbourne's telomere forts to an immigration hotel detention. This is the immigration detention hotel where Novak Djokovic is being kept. You know, a pretty basic hotel on the outskirts of Melbourne's CBD. And what emerged pretty quickly what the media established was, he was being put in the same hotel as a group of asylum seekers. Has been here for 5 months now. After being moved from another facility. I live in Lebanon and Djokovic live in level one. So there was this great dichotomy, I guess, between this Serbian tennis player, this privileged, healthy athlete, and then these refugees who had been in that hotel since late 2020. And in fact, had been in one form of detention in Australia for up to 9 years. That is the food. We've been saved every day by continuous. We find a muggle and mode on it bread and what preceded then was not only Novak fans outside that hotel, but refugee advocates. Those refugee advocates decided then to try and highlight as best they could the plight of the refugees who had been detained in that hotel for much, much longer than Novak Djokovic. Of course, unlike those asylum seekers, Novak Djokovic isn't long for this hotel detention center, he lawyers up and gets out, yeah? Yeah, he ends up spending four nights in the but he engages some top barristers in Melbourne. There's a court hearing in the federal circuit and family court in Melbourne and basically the ruling sensationally the outcome of this court hearing that was handed down on Monday evening was that Djokovic hadn't been afforded enough time on that morning when he was detained by authorities and when they decided to revoke his Visa. So they made that decision, the judge ruled that he wasn't given enough time to respond. But that doesn't necessarily mean he can play tennis. It doesn't. And this is one of the bizarre things about this story. So you would think that if a judge rules in.

And before we explore how exactly that happened, there are a few things you need to know about Novak Djokovic. First, he has a penchant for getting himself into trouble. You might remember when he was recently booted from the U.S. open after losing a point when he smashed a ball in anger and accidentally hit a line person in the throat. "All at the same time. It's very hard to sum this sort of match up into any words that do it justice and I'm sure I'm failing miserably. But I know that I was moved constantly throughout that match. I'm sitting in a hotel room on my own. There's that wonderful ambient sound option on the Euro sport player where you don't have any commentary. And I'm sure the commentary was great because there were commentators on tonight that I really like. But I listened with no commentators and there were points where I ended up doing my own commentary on my own. In the room. Just because I was so worked up. It was fun. The most David law thing that has ever happened. I love that. Anyone else saying that and I would think it was a little bit sad, but you, David, I'm the time alive. Yeah, I know you were. Gosh, I agree with everything you've both just said about this match and that third set in particular. I mean, I would add as an ingredient to a great set, not knowing which way it's going and there was so many momentum swings in this set. It looked like Djokovic had it and the doll came back. It looked like Djokovic had it again, the doll came back again, and we headed into a tie break. And I said to Katherine at this point, can you imagine losing this set of tennis and winning the match? I just didn't think it was possible. And then when Djokovic did win that tie break, I said, well, if there's one guy who could lose that set of tennis and win the match, it's Nadal. And yet he broke at the start of the fourth set, but actually, I think we saw he didn't have anything left. He was broken by the end of that match, physically emotionally mentally. That set that match had taken so much out of him. And yeah, I think, you know, beating the doll is at Roland Garros is the toughest thing in tennis. And we saw the depths Djokovic had to dig to be able to do it. I certainly can't confidently say that I remember Novak Djokovic ever playing better tennis than that. I mean, he blew me away tonight. I felt like I felt like we all should have just sort of dropped to our knees after the match rather than standing on our feet really want to go back and watch that much now, particularly that third set, which, yeah, that I do vividly remember just feeling I haven't seen anything better as a set of tennis David. Are you having sulfate holiday in flashbacks? Is that a part of 2021 that you'd like to relive? It is, yeah. I remember thinking afterwards I want to watch this match again and I'm here in December and I'm really disappointed with myself that I haven't watched it again. I'd like to go and watch it again now because here in that back reminds me of how it did make me feel. And yeah, the idea of somebody breaking the dowel down on that surface and you talked about you don't know whether you've seen anything. He showed you something new Djokovic. That's because he did it on clay, did it against in a day? He did that French Open just unheard of to do it like that. In hindsight, does the Nadal injury and what we've known since does that change your view at all these review? What he was still able to play extraordinary tennis right up until he wasn't. Maybe the foot was bothering him before the latter stages. The final set certainly the foot absolutely was an issue. It looked at the time. I think we didn't want to dwell on it too much because we didn't want to detract from the fantastic spectacle. I don't think it was injury that decided that much. But yes, certainly in that last set, the foot was an impediment to Nadal, but it certainly didn't look like it was in the third set. Did it? If he played that set of tennis, you know, whether he lost it or not, he's still played an extraordinary set. He played that set with a terribly terribly painful foot injury, then there aren't words for that other. I agree. And I think looking back at it now, that was the moment for me, which changed the whole narrative of the men's tennis season, really, because Djokovic winning in Australia, that's his territory. That's like a hold of serve, really, I suppose, for him, but beating the doll for the second time at Roland Garros, and then backing it up and going on to beat sits a pass in the final from two sets down. That was the moment where he really just added to his greatness. I felt that weekend and just suddenly then starting to think about the Grand Slam. And I think we were in the immediate aftermath of the Frank open. Djokovic totally took control of the season in those two or three days. Yeah, perhaps not when he was two sets of down to sit to pass in the final. We won't dwell on reliving that because.
