"Know whether wherever our how'd you get in this game this year didn't give a shit about dad. They they WANNA go sit next to Pat Kane and Ovechkin and take tons of pictures of all that that was one thing my wife said. Make sure you boys take pictures. Brady I probably see more senators games than anyone in Boston is. Your Dad knows I like a game of chance to but you guys I liked his Julia. Play balls off every night how much. Dj Smith meant to the team now. He's he's been awesome for us. He's no Cana- changed. No almost the culture just our goal and our mindset has just work out work the other team and give ourselves a chance Manson and stick together. You know there's some incidences where you know. There's things haven't gone our way in and we've stuck together and we always persevere and I think our mindsets that we're never out of a game and We're GONNA just keep keep hitting keep keep trying to get your fun to watch. I'm talking to someone. I wish I played with Dj. Smith's he seems like a really good guy. He's he's good at what he does. The guys love plan for them they go through a wall foreman and they're a bunch of guys who are playing for jobs and they come to play every game you know. Sometimes they just get down but you know there are two games under five hundred before that little bit of slide for the last three weeks. So they've done a a good job and they got some good quality players call people. They're fun team to watch for Shula. Oh I was GONNA ask about about Calgary. Obviously the coaching change was one thing I want to ask about. You guys do that. You end up going on a nice little stretch of games. There and then Anderson ends up getting that contract extension. I haven't had the chance to watch him play much from what I have seen. Seems like a solid top for defense. Then maybe just give people who haven't got a chance to see him play maybe a deeper dive into what he brings to your team. While I think he's Awesome I. I think he's really really good and I'm happy from this is only is. I think a second full season. And he's starting to prove to everybody he's go can play up and down like we have guys Or older and older. I would say like we have Job Roads and yeah. He's great. I'm but I think we have a very like veteran deekor and they're all good players. I think we have one of the best record in the league in my opinion So he can play up with Gio sometimes which he has parts this year and then he could play his play up. He's a power play Guy Just such great puck mover. He's got that He's got that toughness to him to where he doesn't like it back down from anybody to and I love that like he's he's right in there all the time he He loves CHIRP. And I I love it. 'cause he's hit whenever he's doing that you know he's engaged and you always knew it and He's one of the guys who brings it every night but Great contract for him to Chang- I was happy and it kind of caught me off guard. You know when you hear about like guys You know there you hear about it and like from the team the man were close to signing him. He's talking about it. You know I might be signing engine. I knew nothing about it so you just woke. Oh Cup it's like I like like I'm I'm at home. And I'd just like Grammar Hassles Anderson signs whatever seven year extension six year extension. My whole my God and thirty sheets later so we're good and then coming up July first you can start talking or are you proud of you. Talk about okay.

"The Games in Arizona and Dallas and especially in Dallas oh my God that Arizona and that game was bad this Dallas game it was the most one-sided two one victory for the Dallas Stars that I've ever seen just the senate had no possession time they lost all the battles for parks and if not for Anders Nielsen that game would have been and horrific and it's I'm trying to figure out what the sends are at this stage of the game they certainly had some tremendous games against Tampa Bay one of the best teams in the end. Gel that was at home and the defending Stanley Cup Champs Saint Louis blows they played very well there as well this this team that we watch these last two games they bore no resemblance whoever to what we saw in those earlier to game so I'm sitting back as a fan of this team going I I don't know what the hell this is but this could get astras in a hurry talk about because we were shooting the shit before we hit record AH today about this this weapon players up and down to the minors Oh yeah of course that was a story when they first did it after two games but the Russian guy in there or labral back and but now they do this every fucking period that they're sending someone up and down what's going on there well since that last sort of flurry they've called up Nick Paul he's got into a game or two they called Jordan Schwartz he got into a game and now Schwartz has been sent down and then inexplicably and let's keep in mind that you got a guy like Logan Brown who is a first rounder who's gone through four training camps and still has yet to catch as an NHL regular he still down to the minors and and they decided to send Schwartz Down Belleville and they called up somebody named JC Boden who's had like I think he's playing he's played in two of the five games down in Belleville so far and he had no points in either of those games meanwhile you've got you know bathroom had a five point IT Game Brown at a four point game and they call up JC modell who who's been healthy scratch for three of the five I'm just trying to figure out what the hell is going on here what what exactly is the intent behind that maybe this is a hard worker and that's the the message they want to send like uh screw you skill is that we hope to build around someday screw you all we're calling up JC Boda who has virtually no NHL future speaker because right now at least anytime soon because right now he's not even being used regular irregularly in the American Hockey League it's all fascinating yeah yeah what's going on Stevie what's happening here I I wonder if this is one of new coach first of all the whole thing of freaking out felt like this before ten games have been played you know they probably haven't played ten years how they eight six eight games and and all these moves chiefs within eight games I don't know why you know you'd have to you'd have to hear from the coach I guess of what when someone asked why are you sending guys up and down like that a massive line to totally with the line shuffle doing the goal is a full rotational thing like stability comes in many forms and I think that includes being used to your linemates I don't know I mean I mean maybe I'm overestimating that but I think that that's a fairly tried and true thing through it hockey's history that you wanna get some guys play together and getting comfortable with each other and you need to give that some time to see if it's going to work or not and he seems to have a pretty quick before he starts based on the bingo balls out yeah right yeah let's relax let's get twenty in the books you know and he should have done that I should've stopped doing those changes after the second game like he did or maybe not at all yeah yeah just let run with this for a bit by the way find the GM I want to see how you do as a coach you know that this this this Guy Steve May be coaching himself out of a job. I don't know I don't WanNa talk too early either but I'm assuming all these moves are coming from the coach yeah I mean some of the GM has a say in what's going on with the calling guys up and so I'm not sure exactly what the higher key is but you know you peaked me to an interesting sort of thing like what appear Dory on the general manager of the Ottawa Senators told Dj Smith K- were like two games into the season here let one of the assistants two assistant coaches who've been head coaches on jackass Wino- who play I was a coach to the Islanders Davis Payne who was the head coach of the Saint Louis Blues we think they're pretty good head coaches too so what we're going to do is we're GonNa put you up in the press Box and we're legit cap you on the head coach of this team for two three games immediately ago well let's freaking stupid in give the guys who get the chance I some time I know we're not we sound like we're not giving time right now because you know we're second guessing the coach already but he seems like a real serious level of impatience across the board I'm not saying Dj Smith doesn't know what he's doing but I think that maybe some early jitters this early in the Rookies head coaching career. Yeah it's like you get a coach who looks at it and say look if we're gone for shit here but we're making these mistakes gotta go into the video room in a sit down on a show you what you did wrong according to the plan that I had for the team and apparently you nodded your head yes in practice when I said does everyone understand what we're trying to do here okay we're going to do a two one two okay and binary okay well well here's the video you're not doing it okay so so at that point you would you'd have to pour it on a little more right with the team and bring them and again so I gotta show you again what you're doing so let's make this thing work here and then you would you're exactly right Steve You'd say Okay We got twenty games here to get the team in shape fifteen twenty games something like that that's commonplace men in in pro sports give the guy chance yeah we've got a young team we're in rebuild particular when you say all that you know it's not like you're the leafs where he got this you know it's a little different there right if you've got guys who are making mistakes like you know this ain't supposed to be happening here you know what's going on so but but moving guys up and down but they got they got a pretty good roster I mean even the most basic of jobs there's like three months the trial after after you've taken the job they give you at three months what do you call that a three month trial or something like that what's the word for that the law dishes steve maybe just a it's a normal job anyway you know three months thing and at that stage of the game you could be terrified it for three months but they wait three months before they say you know it's not working out kind of thing so how'd you perform if instead of doing something like that the employer in your job said yeah if you make mistakes you know your first one we were gone out I'll be you're not gonNA get a good employee either you're not going to get a good performing employees who executes the things that you want to because it too frequent skittish in nervous based on the rules or based on the environment you're creating with your quick hook absolutely absolutely I couldn't agree more I understand and you know so this message to the player that he sends down fair enough okay you didn't do it I said I told you we're going with the guys who work the hardest and you're not the base level of what but the guy coming up you're right there's going fuck hope I lost two periods they're gonNa make mistakes you know especially on this team because there's not a lot of talent on and so the mistakes it you take this job you know there's GonNa be mistakes and you know you're probably going to be one of the worst teams in the League he knew that coming in and yet there's seems to be this sensitivity level to mistakes where it's like you're not ready for the Chug it down there and that's fine if you have that take after eight ten twelve games but to have it after two games that just doesn't wash with me and it's like I understand that you know it's tough to judge a guy who's not really given the tools to to be successful but I'm not talking about that I'm talking about not working with what you have and letting these guys play a little bit see what linemates look together for ten game stretch see what a guy looks like in the NHL for a ten game stretch those are more reasonable sample sizes than the ones Dj Smith has going right now that's my only issue Dj Smith may emerge as a Jack Adams candidate someday but in the here and now I think he's making rookie mistakes in the way that he is giving so little time for things to evolve yeah I agree like you said so little time to give things to evolve I've never heard I've never heard any team not say that when they start a year you know we'll have to wait and see we're so that's trying his own his own deal and it's backfire so dramatically let's check the competing web poll here what is your early opinion of Dj Smith Early Days House he's a rookie the team is very of a lot of inexperienced guys in the team a lot of guys frankly with respect that aren't very good hockey players so it's not exactly a stack deck for Dj Smith so I asked the poll question with that in mind Andrej onus rights poor guys up to his neck and deep water maybe hot water her restocked tossed into the deep end without a life jacket made it maybe paddling upstream in a lifeboat with a life boat without a paddle you get the idea she's really gone with the water metaphor they're pretty hard danae stead writes never too early to be second guessing Rick Casey writes it sure feels like more of the same I am not the hardworking team I expected but it is way too early to judge Chris Tate hard work supposed to be the mantra it has not been evident the last couple of names I say we see how he reacts to all this Darcy jat rights hard to judge him little so little work with and finally Ed Brown he's our winner I think he is definitely a man that stands behind the bench what the silence may be Anthony here Steve from the players I haven't you know unfortunately I can't I can't get all these games out here the auto the sends games I've tried but if you got a bunch of players Wayne and say we're making a bunch of mistakes we're doing right I don't know if I've heard a bunch of that from the sense and and when you don't hear players weighing in Torius for being a tinkerer so my one of my guys as as a bad game or a couple of bad games and I'm like you know putting him on waivers and then like everybody mocks me 'cause by week five is the best player the freaking league I don't let things evolve I react on emotion and I don't stay patient with whatever plan I've come up with like it speaks volumes to me the right out of the gate you decide on your NHL team your NHL Roster you've had a couple of weeks the camp and you decide like every coach does this will be my roster to start.

"Yeah so it didn't last too long and then when we have now and they're like at Petsmart you you pay in like two hundred bucks for the thing at least we do here we have to go okay got all the shots telling me about it we're GONNA pick it up today and come home with a thing and it for two hundred bucks I'm thinking okay it's GonNa be the Cadillac of cats thing comes in and it's just been through the worst fire you know they it I'm like you if I ever had one got one again the problem is I just get rid of the cats and the problem is I've had them too long now them okay combined leather couch animal I I need I need a forty thousand dollar Reynaud now to my house it should get to something Matters of substance people are going to be going tuned into a sports podcast and we talked for ten minutes about freaking cats ause what he got today seems reasonable when we come back we're going to talk about The sends games against the coyotes and the stars in a big bag of suck that those were see the transition from coyote to coyote not too bad not too shabby we'll get to that in just a second I on her mind.

"Year particularly after teams like hours at the seasons they did James your team and the oilers sends here in Ottawa. They were both really not very good you're a little better than Ottawa but it really was not a very good season for other and as they say hope springs eternal fans of a clean slate the players have a clean slate and is nice to go to the rink thinking we have a chance for Verses we're done we have no chance of the play offs I'd rather do anything but go to the rank right now when you look at the cuts TV you're closer to it than I am and more interested way more interesting however was there team here in the guys he kept on the team Steve Compared to the guys he cut can you can you can you look at that and go okay. Here's what he's doing he's keeping this type of guy well there were that many jobs up for grabs they were like you know most of this thing I only looked at one or two guys that I thought were not expected to be on the team or maybe that could've it could've gone another way I thought that Sabrin and sh- Lapik were big time question marks but everybody else I had already panned into the roster and the other one was on defense I wasn't sure what would happen with Eric Brannstrom he's a tiny defenseman like he is smaller geese you might be small smaller than Eric Carlson things any question about that same kind of Mo although great skater great with Pock non-physical and wondered if he was going to be ready for prime time or not so it's Kinda between him and Christian Euros he got sent down and I wanted to Logan Brown my maybe would land spot up at four award so those were the kinds of decision is there a theme I don't think a theme broke out I figure basically best players available the sovereign thing as we talked about in the last episode that's the biggest talking point because skill wise he's just not there with the other guys however he brings a four check and go play inability to fight look after the young guys that DJ Smith felt was a crucial component for this campaign. I don't you think of this event or Cain situation San Jose Sharks taking on the Vegas Golden Knights in their preseason finale and a vendor cain was trying to get into it with Eric England and he had a rough night he'd been getting scraps all night and in the final when he's trying to get an England and one of the linesmen chases him around the ice prevent trying to prevent Kane from getting to England and I don't know if he tackles him presser they both just sort of trip up on each other but under came is not very happy about being sort of Grab Dad Lasoud by the linesman and then finally falling to the ice he gets up and gives him a one handed shove for a second like hey what are you doing and now might face a ten game suspension in the NHL for that because it is supposed to be automatic if you have any abuse of an honest official you're supposed to get ten games do you think that maybe there's extenuating circumstances here Jim you know I saw it here's what I think about the suspension things when they're laid down when they when they got to give a guy suspension the whole yeah I think behind it is better get serious about this and certainly there's GonNa be some sort of suspension here is the concern is if you don't suspend the guy that that this will happen again break I'm sort of stating the obvious here but the guys to pay the price for what he did but I think really what they weigh in as they gotta make this statement saying you you you can't do what you did you can't do it's beyond it's beyond anonymous penalty okay what you did because if this happened again it's it's it's too serious infraction spitting in someone's face I think should be suspended the headshots the the heinous chops and shit like that and crosschecks to the neck and all that stuff hit from behind so I think the League's done a good job at that particular hitting from behind right where you smash guys into the boards that that is guys know automatically now that the Oughta go change the way they're hitting the guy during the speed of the play you know I looked at this thing steve and I gotta be honest I'm Sorta like you know I I maybe the guys got to get a game or something like that for for I hope it's not a four five game or ten game suspension was sort of the heat of the moment guy made a little mistake here I don't I don't think he was targeting the wrath you know he was he was trying to get the guy whoever who's GonNa fight or whatever they were living off each other whoever the other guy was so that's my take on that thing when I saw it different if his Co. Yiping at the REF screaming or the linesmen seeing you know it was an offsite or whatever and then leans in pushes the guy that's a little different but let's look a little bit of a one off a little one handed shop you know and it's a mistake in my mind I think it's a mistake the only people standpoint I think the be she should be a little punishment for both I don't think Cain deserves ten because I understand the frustration of uniquely manhandled like that maybe that maybe it's not a tackle per se but it's all the man handling this leading up to it it's like what what's happening here and then Cain gets you know he default to the ice along with the official the official clearly He he blew it like I I mean I think you only behave the way he he did if Cain is going after maybe a non-fighting star England is one of the toughest freaking guys and all the NHL that guys won some big fights against some big heavyweights in the game so he didn't need anybody's protection and so why these linesmen is behaving this way it was I don't know I feel like okay no matter what the circumstances were I think Cain can't put his hands on an official but there are extenuating circumstances out of a linesman came across and punched Kane in the face he's not allowed to protect himself at some point you have alignment doesn't stupid things are you not allowed to a fight fire with fire to some degree I still the cane in this case shouldn't have because I don't think there was an intent to you know doing over the line mm per se but he did still and I still think you know Kane should get something in the in the linesman should as well because he completely blew it on that play when you say that I'm thinking back to the mid I'm looking talked so when you say that I thought that too actually what does the Lineman's because chasing him around the ice right that's the thing the linesmen yeah I agree I agree it's like dude I the first time I've ever seen that there's there's obviously a method to the officials madness when they go just relax just let them go first of all people don't mind it coaching it's GonNa it's GonNa just end up being a fight one's GonNa no one's getting decapitated here and so he probably needs a bit of a tuning up you can only do so much right you step in between them a little bit when they're yapping and say okay boys come break it up here well let's not let go any further I'm guessing that's what but I tend to agree with you a little bit however however all that being said even if the guy you know if the if the line's been like he didn't punch him in the face you know he was he was obviously trying to stop what what what could have occurred later so and again if I think S. matches brewing than I understand why the linesmen is being that diligent and that aggressive like gotta save this player who can't handle himself sorry cozy on the background I gotTa Save This player who can't handle himself from the rougher advice dances of Evanger Cain here well again this is England and he can he can he can look after himself so it didn't make a lot of sense to me Glenn what it wasn't like there was a linesman draped all over him like England is standing there right just literally just standing there not being bothered by anybody and so I I just thought that that was maybe there was something leading up to it because there was a bit of a slash that occurred prior to that and maybe the linesmen got you know maybe he took a bit of the brunt of that slash I don't know but maybe that was part of what he might have been a bad mood too yeah I I suspect these lines if they're if they're not holding fast to what the guidelines are for them when that begins to come down on on the ice that they could possibly escalate something that would otherwise not happened if they if there was sort of calm cool and collected about all that being said freaking linesmen man take up a lot of abuse from from players maybe not so much in hockey but we're doing basketball man when I watched it so anyway I digress slightly but I don't think I don't think it should get much that is our computing web poll today Evanger Cain could get up to ten for shoving a linesman it is unusual to see a linesman chase a single player around like this before taking him to the ice houses the NHL handle this these are some of the bits of feedback that we got at TSN Steve Rick Ac writes good member I think the best way forward for the NHL here can be described into words cage match Oh hell make it a pay per view as well sure Luke Chabad rights great hockey player of the past I think the referees at fault should not be suspended coach Bombay rights I agree one hundred percent except we know who this will probably favor. xbox Canada writes in I don't think the referee was in the right there at all I think they both get a fine and call it a day at sports dude says doesn't make sense is that it's England a player doesn't need protect so what the F. is the lines doing in the first place I'm siding with Kane here although it wouldn't hurt to suspend him for a game or two but definitely not ten I got three all right more to hit Gigli pants forty four rights shakily love Gigli pants you as much as I'm not a fan of vander can't I'm thinking this ref went a little rogue with the man handling he'll get some games for sure because the NHL wants to be seen as protecting their own Gary Scott Different Take I've no problem with a linesman trying to put some space way the out of control player the tackle was a little over the top but it can be argued that it was fully accidental and oh please rights tackling they both fell and got right back up why the hell would he tackle them just to let them up a millisecond later and James the lines need to stop being the fight police these guys wanted to fight get the effort of the way thanks for all the feedback today you know it could it could be offsetting shit right there go completely but I I don't know I don't know players aren't insane you know they're not in You know what they should do Steve when I saw that I don't know if they're going to do it again this year they did it some point over the last few years and I really liked it and it got the idea that the NHL should do it again from watching the NFL yesterday the NFL is one.

"Off the back of the net it ends up right on a Montreal player Stich Bing Bang. It's to nothing and the sends never really competed after that for the most part but they made a bunch of cuts after the game. Hey goaltender. There's only one Martin Brodeur okay. You can handle the puck. Knock it off right yeah. Knock it off. Even when guys are good at handling the PUCK Steve. You've the coaches go. Bananas Go bananas when they make this fantastic play. They come on their net grabbed. A pocket rifle saucer pass up the left side. You can see the coaches hey way to go. That's what we want our goalie doing that high risk play of you know. I would argue that this the two guys in goal last night like you've got Craig Anderson who's WHO's developed in Ottawa but he's always had a reputation for not being very good at pot candling so so he's he's starts that game in coming in the third period is a kid named Joey decor and this guy is the best and I'll put what Martin Brodeur in that as well. He is the best puck handling goalie I've ever seen. It's kind of an unnecessary thing. Steve. It's a bonus if your goal is. It's a bonus but if you just stick to the plan okay stick to the basic techniques goaltending the team will be fine. Stop the the park when they when they rightfully in up. The boards rippled along the boards for the dumping. Get up. Get back there. Okay stop it. Just leave it. They'll just stop up it and leave it there okay. We don't need you trying to make a pass here while the defense breaking in on you know I'd I'd dumb dumb seeing Craig Anderson but I've said that for three four a years now and I guess they're okay with but you're right. I think it's one of those skills though if you're a goalie that handles the puck well. It's one of those skills is taken for granted you kind of expect every goal is to be able to do it a little and when they do it well and just get that little outlet pass to the DEFENSEMAN is coming late. Everybody just assumes okay. They take that for granted but God help you. If you screw it up yeah and tough gig right. We have good nights and bad nights. You're the hero the goal you're not a better expression words boards shown in hockey goaltenders what I wouldn't like to be Steve or I don't think you would either use. You mentioned a little little pre. Show warm up here. There is a field goal kicker on yeah yeah if you feel lonely out in an island as an NHL goalie you gotta you gotTa feel for the the poor old field goal kickers we the same NFL game tonight and that was it was the late afternoon game and it was the New York giants coming back to beat Tampa Bay and this Daniel Jones. Eli Manning's replacement at a pretty Dandy gaming at three or four touchdown passes at least three and he ran for two more and including the winning touchdown but Tampa still a time in the clock at the end to Downfield and set up what looked like an easy field goal and Matt Gay a steps up and he's already missed a couple of extra point attempts. He's missed a F- he missed a field goal earlier as well and is thirty did and when you look at the final score exactly it's a thirty four yard field goal and he just misses it just a bit to the right and I'm I'm GonNa meet a wondering. Is there a worst job in sports than a field goal kicker. I don't think so yeah. I don't know you know the guy hooks he hooks one point after the other one blocked like you say they lose by point like your point. Tampa Bay because of this miss the point. He's the hero Eddie. Murphy makes it and he's a goat. He pushed it right Tampa. Obey Steve has been through eight field goal kickers in eight years. Wow I saw after so maybe it's maybe it's a tough tough to play. I I don't I don't know they may not have solved their problem of may not have solve their problem right. Rugby may be a tougher sport. Steve Bull Riding. Maybe maybe tougher offer but I say worst job. I mean I know what you're saying. Things can be tough for bad or whatever for different reasons. It's just seems like such a lonely job job and again. He's being carried off the field of. He makes that easy kicking instead. He's the goat you know what I would do if I was a field goal kicker. Steve and I missed that goal this that that that field goal what okay I look up and I'm GONNA fuck. We lose the game. I immediately turn and run directly to my car. That's what I do right. I go back the imagine that walk back to the bench of of trying to do that and and listen coaches are mean men member bill parcells. There was a great clip him years ago talking to yeah I think as punter or is fueled by just berating him at practice. You know just saying look at here's your job. Okay you kick the ball all as far as you know and calling him an idiot and all this stuff I would be willing to walk yeah and I'd be willing to bet you that Tampa Bay's Kicker Matt Gay will be cut this week for sure for sure yeah. Even the blocked one like you said it's because he's not hitting it high enough right right. It'll get he's not elevating the ball quick enough. He hit it fat on the game winner on the potential game winner as scuffed it and I mean that's just all about nerves matt. ADD GAYS GONNA make thirty four yard field goals practice a hundred times out of one hundred times but it's amazing. How pressure changes everything yeah anyway you can can have it. You'RE GONNA have that job now. We're going to give you four hundred grand. Yeah pass to mostly okay. It's going to recommend a talk ten years off your life moments like that no question it really does on the giants side of the ball. Eli Manning replaced by Daniel Jones and again he had a very good game but it it was not as bittersweet for giants fans because they're like. Oh my God we got the heir apparent ally manning finally Woohoo That's a good thing thing however you you're superstar running back. Saquon Barkley leaves the game on crutches simple little screen pass and a Tampa defender catches him low oh on the ankle and he's down in a heap and did not return to the game so interesting to see what will happen with with his stats moving forward but that is a big bag of suck for giants fans and the guy comes back on the field okay after got injured with a pair of crutches from the year two thousand and seventy something that you see those things and you know what. I'm talking about yeah. I just saw the walking booed. I didn't really pay attention to the crutches though go to look at those crutches. Is there like a fricking star trek or something. Hey it's time for warranty Super Trivia Sports Trivia facts designed to blow your mind and we're going to go golf today because I know you like some Gulf. I figured that's a fair way to go at it right because you your knowledge of Sports Trivia is right there when it comes to golf. It's very much it's above average. I would say for sure Kasur Aligned by the way except my own golf game my game so bad now. Steve Okay played on Friday. No need eight. I remind you Steve that in my heyday. I play my best golf. When I was a teenager. Okay was competed junior there up in northern Ontario play my best golf in early twenties. I was good. I was like a solid three stevie back then I had the Hogan blades the tough little irons to hit that was just a rifle. Those earns in there like nothing shape eight the shot. Steve Little Fade little draw all that stuff little chunk and run bunker shots. I could do it all I do. It all wind the tape ahead. Steve Thirty eight years from when I was twenty and guys I guys I played great golf with. I played with on Friday guys who I played with back in the day and I hadn't played them and along long many years and we got together on Friday. I can only sum it up this way. Steve with a guy after watching me play the front nine and and adding up my score on the guy said is everything okay with you. Oh no very condescending are you. Are you okay. I think it was genuine Steve. Oh no I could hear the guy whisper into his buddy going. This fucking guy used to be really don't know what he's right. You can't forget it. I probably shot like I duNno one hundred thirty one or something yeah. I play today IGA Craig with some good listeners of the program you know Big Rick Regular member him sure I do also Jerry Shenyang and Gary Tiwi a great day Diego Creek and I decided on one thing is that part of my problem is a golfer. Oh Yeah I put my thumb here on the grip or I have to do this when I make my turn it just dumb. It's a stupid. It's a stupid game that I love so freaking freaking much well. It's the same at all levels. Men Voice said that about golf. You'll be Dustin Johnson. Are you going to be Jim Jerome so it's like what is wrong. What is wrong. That's what we have in common steve with the pro athletes. What's wrong with my game. Yeah it ends there anybody trivia come on yeah remember. I told you that Trivia question about Arnold Palmer that was kind of badly worded end wrongly asked and everything and wrong inaccurate yeah but it's kind out of the same sort of question. Arnold Palmer was the first to hit a million dollars in career earnings that was in the late sixties. Today's question is your your trivial deal with that was arnold. Palmer was the first guy to win twenty five million in nineteen fifty five. No I never said a false. It was bad. It wasn't that bad all right anyway what he got gay so today's question what I want to know is who's I golfer to pass a million dollars in yearly earnings. Things did so in nineteen eighty eight when he won four titles that year. I'll say curtis strange new magnificent son of a bitch that you did. You know why I knew that because I know Kurt Curtis Strange won back-to-back. US opens in one thousand nine hundred eighty eight nine hundred eighty nine well done but he wants titles in eighty eight and he was named the player of the urinate five eighty seven and eighty eight so that was certainly Curtis strange's time and he is. "Team is all out of stock for for jimmy the edmonton oilers. You cannot wear so what uni are. Are you going to go out and buy a long way to get to the same question. What's your favorite n._h._l. Jersey beyond your onto it is you know and <hes> when when the when those things started those poll questions <hes> you know the people would <hes> debate not only to your favorite but they say what is the best one okay so that's the that's the argument that people are gonna put forward that and it's always sort of the big three or four you. You know a lot of the original six like chicago. Blackhawks jersey always seems to be in that conversation right that it's the best one of course the haves and then the leafs. It's people talk about the bruins you know being the greatest one the ones you've never heard of when this when the when people were originally talking about this thing <hes> when there are a bunch of options to pick your favorite jersey you know hartford you never heard of but now people now the now the thing to do is the worst year jersey as the more popular. It becomes you know what i mean. I i don't know if it's just me but you look at vancouver when used to laugh that it was just a stupid straight eight blade hockey stick and and then they went to these other shitty ones but but people love the bad ones you know that they're that they're wearing so <hes> <hes> hartford whalers of course stuff like that so i'd go with that vancouver one. It was so bad and so obvious you know. Here's our logo where we're hockey team saw. Our logo is a hockey stick. Okay that logo you're talking about. The original knox had just a hockey stick in it initially thousand that was a hockey stick in a tv set but he actually look at the the area around it. It's actually the letter c. o. For canucks i got it exactly. Steve people love wearing that shit. They love wearing that shit. That was super unpopular back in the day so what everybody's <hes> taking part in the poll at t._s._n. Steve <hes> they're. They're going to town on the whole. <hes> you know the the old dead teams minnesota north stars berry cape says says tim bonner who by the way good greens keeper out at <hes> <hes>. What is it river bend golf club. He's shouting on the kansas city scouts you ever see the kansas coach uniforms. They're pretty cool and so there's a lot of people who really chimed in on in all those expire teams the minnesota north stars colorado rockies <hes> golden seals because i play hockey like a beached seal another hockey note coming up here in a second but the web.

"Jim kaye ford and rb computing before we launch and james becoming a patriot members you know get get you shout out on the shell and we'd like to thank our latest members jeremy fletcher and john stewart. I don't know if it's the daily show's jon stewart. <hes> don't worry about your shoes. Fellas come on in to become a supporter of the show <unk> a patriot member or anything else show related. You got any questions whatever checkered steve w project dot com james because a suitcase of folks come on and help yourself. Dan you want you know where the fridge is okay. It's right there stocked yup. That's me inviting everyone into the show ice bowl a party mix or something you know bits and bytes. No steve is gonna see. That's that's you that you were the the seventh of the waltons bits and bytes. What snack are you laying liane out hash brownies or something well here laying out something you know. You got a full bar something like that before i get to the freaking snacks that you're going to invite you. Say hash brownies yeah something like that. You know that you're gonna you know come on in one of them. We got a bunch of stuff here. You're gonna get wacked. People still eat hash brownies. I don't know i don't know i don't know i never did. I have not been no no nor did i. I never did anyway. You know you talk if i gave you a little zinger <hes> <hes> about your i._q. This being the hundred show so i got tested steve okay for for my i q several years ago. Oh i figured you'd been tested before but i wasn't thinking your i q i was thinking. I don't know something you picked up in college or something party <hes> yeah. That's another story actually so anyway. I got told by a group of people. I got told by some people when and i was well. I'll be honest okay. It was my first crack at treatment and when i was in there years ago they had a me a book okay. The handed me a book after i was there about two days only of this thirty eight treat right and they had me a book called scattered mines was the title of it okay. I said okay so i started reading this thing. It's a vote attention deficit disorder. You know adults attend a._d._d. Right and so. I'm reading this thing and there's there's sort of like one of these tests like here's a bunch of questions. If you answer yes to these things you probably have a._d._d. Right whipping through all of them just ticking the boxes. Yes yes yes and you know i wanna i wanna another opinion so i booked this appointment with the guy and the way they test is sort of the guys in front of you with this flip chart so you can see the question on the on the back he's here. He's got the questions were facing him and you're you're looking at it in the sort of keeps asking all these questions right and making notes of it and and stuff like that and so i go for a full day on the shit and it's becoming awfully appearance deep because a lot of the stuff they do a sort of visual testing one of it is to to see your intelligence quotient which is here's a picture studied this picture and then we're going to cover it and we're gonna ask you a bunch of questions about it so i got every one of those frigging things wrong. Okay it was a picture of a family a picnic table and then they're there heaven by barbecue and the guy thinks i'm pulling his leg. I'm getting it so wrong. Okay how many people are at the picnic table. Well it was six and seven is like no there was three guessing and he goes yeah. You'd be the i got this guy. I've been testing people for thirty years. You're the first person that ever went double the amount of people you know there's three people there are some we'll get to do. Some might think four but never ever seven or eight people. You know i like like i don't even know what to think that he's telling me right. You don't have the best bedside manner steve but so he kept you know and and what were they eating. I'm like well they were they were. They had a big rips in he's like no it was hot. Dogs and i just kept getting everything wrong. You know i got. I know visual recall right. That was one of them in the then. We did these other protests so i go back the next day to do some more l. about halfway through steve the guy was pretty funny. Guy was pretty funny and i said listen listen. I'm sorta peeking over the top to see what my answers are and he covers. No you can't look can't see what they are. I said well tell me how i'm doing okay. We've been doing this for a day and a half and i want an idea of how it's going here okay and he says okay. Let me see let let me see any sort of seeing him. Look at the stuff of this finger going down and then going across like he's looking at one of these charts and he goes okay. Let's see this okay. He looks at me and goes. You're seven years old which which comes the surprise to no one listens to you regulate. That was his answer yeah. You're seven years old. You know the guy whipped me on this ritalin stevie. We're we're. We're doing the show back then you whip me on ritalin. You're on red line during the show as well as everything else well. It was the highest level. There's at that time there's three levels are ritalin for that they use for a._d._d. And like what i was telling my friends. I got tested including guys like you and stuff like that. You know all of them. Were gonna it costs money right and it was like eight or nine. Hundred bucks to do is test and all of my friends said oh my god dude. What a waste of money we could talk. We taught you that in one second flat. <hes> anyway the guy with me on so there's three stages you know it's sort of light medium fool lot full on blast of this stuff and so i took the full on the side effects were gross end end of like you have the flu and stuff like that and so like three days later. I'm kind of like frothing at the mouth. You know sort of sleeping standing up up to you know this is much better this is this is the way to go anyway. Went back to shove the shit out of you know. I said i'm not taking this stuff. I don't hate myself that much. I certainly could have saved you a lot of money back in the day. Because obviously you know i i observed you every morning and listen to you every morning and saw you even been off the air and wandering around the building and the things you did and keep in mind. I'm someone who's been immersed in the world of autism for well twenty ninety three years now so i know what attention deficit looks like i know what o._c._d. Looks like and <hes> i could've. I could've diagnosed you right in the studio within about half half an hour yeah it was i mean my friend bought me. A great shirt got a great shirt that said i. I know i'm not a._d._d. Because hey look that rabbit right i did. I'm obsessive compulsive in a._d._d. Soy i joined a twelve thousand thousands step program. I had a fabulous morning on the on the whole front on whole autism front point where i basically had to clean toilets that was absolutely covered in four leaders of diet pepsi and whatever my son had yesterday today it was fantastic about late last night while i was doing some production stuff so i had headphones on and i could faintly hear in the background because everybody else had gone the bed the sound of somebody trying to you know you you have gas and you're trying to burp your way through it well he was doing that. It could faintly hear that so i took my headphones off off and all of a sudden i hear him doing that so i wander over and i realized he's taken down two torpedoes for a filled with di pepsi and so i say to him like what are you doing. It's it's like it's like midnight. You can't be drinking too big bottles of diet pepsi it at this time of night because he's like. Can i go to the washroom and i'm like thinking yes to pee at this stage of the game. Now mike hang on a second hang on. I'm not done here and all of a sudden. He's an all and is starting to come up and i could tell i better get out of his way and he got there just in time time to absolutely bazooka barf all over the outside of the toilet all over the wall all over the freaking floor. That was a bad cleanup. That's one of the worst clean cleanups up had to do yep. I'm just renovating the bathroom steve. I'm shutting the door. I'm calling the guy the next day rip everything out change it. I'm not cleaning cleveland. Oh yeah it was bad. We should launch you and we got a bunch of stuff to get to our computing web poll by the way yesterday we we did baseball movies greatest baseball movies of all time and you and i agreed that we liked moneyball the best and there's probably five others that i love as well but just something <hes> i don't awesome grabbed me about moneyball and we both liked best. I would say that based on our poll. Major league was number one with most people dynamite drop in money. We broadcast school is.

"Who what woman was you know. Jenny bouchard was supposed to be that but it looks like she's done before that you know in terms of i guess steve. Who's who's the who's is the greatest at their sport as a canadian against all other canadians. It would be bianca right. Oh yeah for for standout telstar <hes> we've had some through the years for sure i mean you you can go back to the eighties and nineties and think of names like helen kelsey and carling bassett sagoo so right now. They're ago yeah but you know yeah. It's kinda quiet like if he told me five years ago we'd be it'd be all is going into the u._s. Open on this canadian fee nom i would would have guaranteed at eugenie bouchard right now not even on the radar nobody's radar at this stage of the game and it's all about beyond andrea skew and everybody deals with fame in in different ways but when it's meteoric like this like a year ago. I didn't know the name at all right sure. How will they handle it. When when it comes this quickly all right so again rb computing web poll we got to a long time ago the rb computing web poll on the dea of their retirement what canadian players the most more impressive professional careers at brooker bianca and as much <hes> brooke anderson leading the way with well over ninety percent and and <hes> again the web poll brought to you by rb computing. We've had some really bad storms lately and that can mess with your computers or electronics call rb computing today and they'll make sure sure the computers and electronics are protected and for a limited time get a twenty percent discount on all services for listeners to come in and mentioned that you heard this ad on on the project or if you have any general electronics and computer needs something broken. Something needs cleaning rb computing dot com one. Oh six men in place in bells corners now thought it might be kind of fun here here in the dog days of summer to better get to know new sense at goto d._j. Smith earlier this off season. I sat down with smith and then i play the hockey part of the interview here on the show but i also did a sort of a get to know your segment meant that gives you an indicator of the guy that he is and i thought it might be fun to play that back now but he got hold italian unbelievable. Go get nice <hes> hometown all that i'm originally born windsor ontario born and raised <hes> live my life. They're actually grew up in river canard which as a small french community <hes> <hes> outside of windsor moved into come see kind of the other side of windsor <hes> when i was fourteen fifteen years aw and that's where i live today when the seasons over i go back there. There's a lot of hockey players that <hes> at hanging out there we all play golf all kind of hanging around and said you know we get great pro skate going in the <hes> in august so it's a great place to live and raise a family tells you what you're off by stuff. Golf is obviously part of it. <hes> when when you're not fully immersed in hockey and i'm sure this summer there that'd be a lot of <hes> immersed in hockey stuff but <hes> when you're away from hockey <hes> what kinds of stuff besides golf do you like to do in what i fell in love with cross fit a couple years ago <hes> my wife got into it and then got me into it so we're kind into that little bit of a cross community back home <hes> where there's five six days a week. We go al-turah competitive so i just i just found that you know competing against people for the first time when i saw it i i was kind of addicted. <hes> <hes> so <hes> you know i get to compete for five days a week and in whatever their workout maybe so we do that. <hes> you know we golf. I'm very active ran on. I'm going around two buddies houses on the move at all times. I'm not the type of guy that's laying on a couch sitting around. They call it relaxing. My relaxing is being on the move. Not everybody d._j. Wants to talk about family but <hes> <hes> if you're willing <hes> maybe tell us a little bit about your family and introduce us to them. If you could <hes> my wife christie we've been together <hes> thirteen fourteen years now. <hes> you know we've met. We've known each other through <hes> through windsor. She was golfers. You went away <hes> on a scholarship <hes> in golf so now it's really competitive when we play <hes> i have a fifteen year old son that plays aaa hockey back home his name's colton me. He'll be up for the draft this year. We'll see if he's good enough to get drafted and then me and christy have a three year old boy here in june <hes> who absolutely loves his older brother and and data more than anything <hes> and we're just transition into him <hes> into an ottawa fan after after coaxing him into toronto. What do you know about ottawa. What's your history with auto any memories of ottawa. Ottawa's a rich junior town with brian kill ray <hes> you know that's my memory three of playing junior hockey coming in here and playing them and and brian kill rabi and that kind of face to the community <hes> you know certainly being the capital of canada <hes>. I haven't had an opportunity to spend a lot of time. They're just in a short period that i've been here. It's it's a big town with a small town feel and a real passion you can see for the signs ends and i'm really fortunate to be here in the end the man that <hes> will be in charge of a turn this thing around. How do you think the thrill of your first first n._h._l. Game as a head coach this october will compare to your first n._h._l. Game as in n._h._l. Defensemen back in the day well. I say this the players there's all time coaching way harder and plant and when you're coaching year responsible as a head coach you're responsible for twenty guys nineteen and the with the backup goalie when you're a player. You're responsible support for you so there's probably a lot more nerves as a coach and a player but i've been doing this for the last sixteen years in hockey. Thank you my whole life so i i never more calm than when i'm standing on the bench when i'm playing amend my perfect place so it'll be nervous before but at the end of the day it's just another hockey game and and something i can't wait to the case and get to know your stuff. <hes> let's go <hes> with <hes> favorite movie who you know what it was probably always been slapped shop gonna major league solid favorite t._v. Show favourite t._v. Show game the thrones guy. No not a game of thrones. You know what amid more net flicks of <hes> of late favourite t._v. show. I don't watch a ton of t._v. The anymore it you know what it's gonna shock people and i played i watch days of our lives every day. Really yeah hockey players wanted to two one two two for twenty years young. The rest was big as well as a lot of guys for sure <hes>. We're enjoying a nice deli sandwich right now. Your wife was saying you're a big italian food guy. Maybe talk a little bit about place to eat. A leg got favorite kind of food well for sure. It's it's these kind of place. There's an italian bakery back home in windsor. I found one in toronto and looks like i found one here. <hes> i liked the big <hes> crusty bread with the genoa salami so if we can find one of those all be set last book you read <hes> bob roberts biography. I wasn't it was outstanding. What <hes> pro is is a very interesting life at hard life <hes> but any kid and windsor grew up kind of watching bob <hes> being you know the toughest guy in the n._h._l. And and you know he went through some trials and tribulations off off the ice but it was very interesting your first car and your best memory associated with it. While my first car was my dad's pickup truck they construction company and it was i was like got pickup truck that was in the back that no one used and i had the ability to use it but after that it was a green neon that took a lot of abuse and one of those things because i didn't tell anyone the brakes were gone and eventually my stepfather came to me and said you know the brakes are kind of figuring they squeak and for six weeks but as a young kid you got time to stop. Tell me about the worst job you ever had. Non hockey related well. I i tell people all the time i <hes> was actually my grandfather owned the construction companies so they put me to work fairly young. I was in grade eighth grade nine but <hes> eventually when i was playing in the jail i i was actually made my way up to to run the back. When i've been working <hes> 'til noon and then go to practice at like three o'clock players. Don't believe when i say it but the worst if i ever had i was the the stop slow signed guy there <hes> out of job site and i stood there for like ten hours straight of you know stop in stop and go the flag man they called it and i was that was by far coma grandfather had the night. I said i'll do anything dig never ever do that again. For a person like me likes to stay on the movement was absolutely a killer. Let's get you in a better head space than maybe a favorite memory of your childhood. It can be hockey. It could be something else. You know what <hes> it's probably baseball. I just like to compete so much <hes> when i when i played baseball we competed and try and <hes> you no you try and get to the little league world series never got anywhere close to that <hes> but they would chalk up the lines and the people would come out and they get the microphones out and you'd go down a place called optimus this park and windsor and all the best teams in town would compete to try and get to the ontario's and then the canadians so every year in in mid august or early early early august get prepped up and just that thought of maybe one day having the chance to go to williamsport pennsylvania's as a kid and standing there and plays <hes> you know starting from windsor ontario thinking the big picture <hes> the rush was unbelievable. I mean it never got there but it's kind of carried with me and hockey. You stand here before us an n._h._l. Head coach for the first time who beyond yourself who did all the work who is most responsible for helping you get here why i gotta say it's my parents for sure <hes> my my mom and dad <hes> my dad was passed away. <hes> drove me everywhere everywhere just endless dedication between both of them to take me to tournaments to <hes> <hes> you know when i when when the going got tougher as a coach and they weren't paying very much at the start watching watching your kid so you could coach and do things <hes> the endless amount of time that <hes> your family puts up and sticks with you and cheers for whatever team you're coaching <hes> so i'd have to say my parents. What's your dad's name. My dad's names dennis is <hes> you know they call me d._j. I'm dennis dennis joseph. He was dennis warren passed away at sixty of leukemia but <hes> <hes> he had an unbelievable personality. One liners people in windsor still talk about them so i've taken a lot of his personality personality. At what stage did you take on the name d._j. And who gave it to you rate from the gecko. They called me dennis and i it was it was dennis junior d._j. And they had really had no intention region of and really my entire life stay d._j. In walking over here you gave us a few <hes> great lines that you heard from other guys over the years <hes> <hes> what's the best advice you've ever been given in hockey like i said i and i and you'll hear me constantly. I go back to lou lamoriello and it's just <hes> you know the way you treat people <hes>. You don't realize it when you're young and you kinda. Just do whatever you have to to get by and as you get a little older when you get into a realized respect is a big part of it. <hes> you know taking care of each other. In the hockey. World is part of it. You wanna be competitive but also you have to be respectful and lou lamoriello. Did it all those things for me. <hes> you know made sure he always were dressed the right way main. She shaved every day. You know we're in junior hockey. I just kind of went with the flow and it was invaluable to work under a man like that <hes> for my time. What's the secret to handling criticism. You're taking over a team. That's had got a couple of tough years here. There's social media and all that are you a social media guy and how do you shut out distraction and stay focused what you need to stay focused on so many people say that they don't read it but they do. I really don't i don't have twitter. I the only thing you know all go on. Check t._s._n. In check the highlights or or whatever it is so for me <hes>. I don't read the criticism even if they do i really i. I know when i believe in myself enough to to just keep doing what you're doing and in canadian market the fans are so passionate and they just want their team to win and get it <hes> so there's no time to be filtering all the negativity you just gotta keep pushing on to last ones what energizes d._j. Smith and what drains d._j. Smith energize is just getting up every day <hes> in being able to do something important <hes>. I don't look at hockey as a job on one of the luckiest the person the world to be able to to make a living doing the one thing that i absolutely love <hes> and the opportunity to make kids better that sometimes <hes> you know maybe wouldn't have had a chance if you didn't put them over the edge <hes> so the opportunity to get up every day and and teach people and do something you love absolutely energizes me. Eh and negative people is the absolute trainer for me. <hes> and i like color red on a wall <hes> and i could see see a guy that or or or woman that that just looks on the negative side of everything in life's too short. I'm only forty two years old and i remember remember like it was yesterday i ate before you know what i'm going to be sixty five so i'm not gonna waste another day of my life worrying about what goes back great answer <hes>. Let's finish up today d._j. By talking a little bit about the fan because the fan and you've met some i'm sure already you know there's a passionate fan base. He's here. They want this team to be great. If instead of me being across from you there's a guy who's considering a season ticket. He wants to support at the team. What would you tell that fan about what they can expect in the next three years with d._j. Smith as the head coach. What would you say to them at this stage of the game. It's easy for me to say trust me. You don't know me no one's going to trust someone. They don't know what i would say is <hes> go back and look at at at <hes> my prior work and how i've done everything in my career to try and make other people better. It's not about me. It's about making a group better and i believe i've successfully really done that in every place that i've gone. I'm going to do that here. <hes> trust the process. It's not going to be a quick fix what we're gonna do this thing right and i didn't didn't come here to give a bunch of slogans and and say a bunch of things so that people come in and watch us for a week or a month and say always done a good job. Click on the link at steve w project dot dot com before you go carolina hurricanes <hes> they really were a bunch of jerks when it came time to signing their g._m. So here are the hurricanes who this time last year signed don ellis g._m. And their president a lot of people said oh great good zach guy going to be he was the atlanta thrashers only g._m. Believe and not earlier terrible they folded. They left for winnipeg so when carolina brought him i am in everybody's gone a bargain basement the owner tom dunton <hes> very cheap and so they bring him in and they have a great year that they make the playoffs. The hurricanes mccain's do for the first time in ten years so what el- been in the organization for a few years and he was kind of a convenient higher and now he's more of a a wanted commodity and so last week instead of saying well. We've got a really get this guy into contract this g._m. Took to the plan for the first time in ten years <hes> no no. They didn't take that attitude at all last week. They actually just basically said well. If you can find a better deal elsewhere then go ahead. There's another another team wants to offer a higher salary than we won't stand in his way. What kind of an attitude kind of kind of treatment is that of a guy. That's <hes> obviously done a lot for the team. Oh fuck he'll be fine. He'll be fine. Don't don't worry about that. Okay what i really like about steve. It's normally when you get when when people are are looking into who we're going to hire. Are we going to retain the jam or we're going to keep the coach or we're gonna trade a player. <hes> all of it normally gets down to the the onus is on the team to make the deal okay <hes> in the end. It's never it's never everyone blaming the player you know sometimes sometimes but but the oldest is on these teams to sign of g._m. To get a coach signed and all that stuff <hes> so there's always that pressure and you always hear the story from that outside. I love this idea. I love what they said to that. Guy you know to say a fucking. Go see if you can find yourself job you know and then and then no no that's way that's way out there man's in terms of starting in negotiation right for for them to come out of the chute and say we may not be that interested in you. You know if that happened you like your way. It feels too bad too bad that this guy gets his feelings hurt or too bad that he's he thinks he's getting snubbed. Opted all that shit you know you gotta thick skin men in this business and i just like it <hes> in in terms of negotiating tactic you you know to to come right out of the chute and go i go see what you can get and if not come back and see us you know <hes> but how would you feel if you know in the heyday of our radio show. We made ratings. Everybody's happy and he said hey what's going on there a chief well. We're going to let you do if you can. You can leave and go and see if you can. You know finger better offer somewhere else. Go ahead and take it like. I don't know to me that's just not the way you deal with people well. The the the difference here steve the difference here in hockey as <hes> as opposed to your example about radio. Is the radio show we did. There's only there's only one arena there. There's only one game in town there of three guys on the radio during a talk show <hes> with the only the only full-time sports station so it's a little different right. It's a little different talk. Radio stations right you went and worked at a rock station not long after you left us yeah but only because they only because of money you know only because of money that someone came to me and said they're gonna pay this kind of money. <hes> you know if you're if you're a g._m. I'm in the lead. There's there's thirty other deals there that you can go look at you know thirty other team probably not realistically but there's always six or seven <hes> vacancies at any anyone time in a year or three or four or five or something like that so i think it was good. I think it's kinda neat that they did that. You know usually it's just a motive though teams are in the mode of we yet. We did something special this year. Let's take care of the guys who made that happen and it <hes> it. Just it's a little off the page not as bad as the sends mind you like if you look back at the only time the ottawa senators made into a stanley cup final in their history recall. They fired their g._m. John mcclure yeah. Oh it's amazing ago because we always go to the stanley cup final so to stuff flick this g._m. Not the muffler was the full architect. I certainly acquiesce to that but it still was odd timing to say to a g._m. Who just took it to the stanley cup final to say yeah you you build a pretty damn good team. The only eastern conference championship we've ever won but you gotta go by but that happens a lot right where you where a here these stories or these firings or are signings or re signings or not that everyone goes holy jesus. That's awfully fast. You know that's awfully quick back that they got rid of the guy who had a ton of success. Yeah you see it when it happens like a year later or something but not right after like look at eighty something special and then you're immediately gone on. We'll look at vegas what they did with the players right the everyone says yeah. It'll never lasts till they're going to do a big dump here. They're going to dump of players and stuff like that so happens a lot. You know it happens a lot. I just like cap stuff yeah well for whatever reason you know whatever reason so <hes> <hes> i just loved the idea that these guys said you know this guys waiting for the phone. Call you know they'll get at any second now. 'cause they're gonna wanna make me an offer right so so that's usually how it starts like. I say the onus on the team to make an offer <hes>. I think they're perilously going down the road. That ottawa's going down right. Now you know doing your own thing and working by your <music> own money rules and not thinking about comparable said on that certainly you're right as a businessman however i think you will eventually become an organization that gets a reputation for not taking there people have that right now and carolina's on their way with stuff like that. I think well the pendulum's too far with the sense. You know it's too far to that side but if you're the guy pay the money if you're the guy paying the money everyone's waiting for you to make the first deal okay. You have to write you. You're the guys painted the dole. You have to make the first offer and and these guys there i offered normally as a low ball or something like that like why give the guy the advantage say no. We're not making one. No we're not gonna make one. We'll do you want me to work here. Maybe you know maybe maybe i do well. Why are you not signing me fuck. We have made up our mind. You know i'm not sure i think it's good ed loved. I'd love to watch you be owner g._m. of n._h._l. Team that will be the best. I should be steve. I really should be really should be on the topic of the senators. There's though i do need some kind of sends fixed right now because it just feels like two years since they last played hockey game. Their last i game was the first week of april jim. Yes i know and we still have over a month until their first preseason game. Well you know what the the good thing about. It is though steve we've been doing. We've got almost one hundred shows coming up and steve our first show <hes> when we did it we talked about the sense of course you are very disenfranchised with the team. It's back. We we spend a lot of shows in a row talking about the <hes> teams got nothing okay. Let's whip ahead one hundred show steve and it's the same. It's the very same right here percent right here. You are one hundred. It shows deep three four months later saying they have you know we're in more trouble. Nothing's happened over the summer. You know but it's my reality t._v. That's what they are and reality t._v. As we all know he spent a lot of time watching reality t._v. Deutsche hate that guy wanna punched in the face and you're not happy but you still watch right and this is the senators are my reality tv and i need my fix it so yeah. I think they're relying on luck belt. They're going to be in trouble. You know they're relying on luck less this coaches which is a miracle worker so but that's telling right we we've been that's you and i i know you can go even further back that you're probably doing it on the show on the radio show for much much longer period than just last april in them so that's why that's got. I know you want hockey eighty like like we all do start to jones for it in about three or four weeks but jones for it because i got some to cheer for here. I got my connor.

"Ninety-six. Let's go the best player to wear number ninety six pile borei. He wore number ten through most most of his career. You really love ninety six headed in his first year and then pat quinn. Jimmy said that's a show off number made him made him switch which it so he would add ninety six for his whole career except for pat quinn and instead he went with number he would be one of the greatest draft steals in the history history of the n._h._l. Draft because and this would never happen now because we it's all eyes on the n._h._l. Draft than so many scouts and everybody scouring everything it's unimaginable that could happen now <hes> but he was drafted in nineteen eighty nine and that was one year ahead of his supposed used eligibility season. Basically everybody thought he wasn't gonna be ready. Til nineteen ninety and so the connects chief scout whose name was mike penny he he searched a bunch of old game sheets and discovered over in russia that boy had in fact played in enough international games in his last two years to make him eligible for the draft. So everybody loved the guy he would have been. Probably a top five overall the following year instead the conducts nab them that year in the sixth round around in one of the great steals of all time the whole league when they announced it the whole league basically rush rush the stage. I what is that come on. What are you are you into your mind i and so it worked though they they did the research and found he played enough games so everyone made a mistake except except for the canucks yeah. I'm firing all my scouts for an all of how how do you miss that you know. I didn't make that mistake for a guy that good. You'd think you'd you know if you're talking about. Maybe remember like a guy like pavel datsyuk who was drafted like in the way late in the draft sixth or seventh round or something like that <hes> that was a true diamond in the rough. Nobody's talking about him but everybody was waiting for the following year when bore a would be eligible for the draft so you think that a guy be top five the following year you might have done all your homework doc. You got twenty nine teams out of thirty or how many there were at the time in two thousand nine. Guys go no no he's. He's not draftable and the one team team says hey he is. We draft him. How did the other how does the other twenty nine miss it and they all wanted them right. We it was. He was a sought after a league wanted him. I guess <hes> i guess people just took people's words for it. They look at the stat sheet and they say okay well. There's nothing there you're and this one scout decided that he would scour through the old game sheets and and found that out crazy right well all right. Let's launched in here today because got lots to get to <hes> the hockey story so we're gonna grab was the carolina hurricanes resigning their president and g._m. Quite frankly they really were a bunch of jerks when it came to signing him so we'll get into that <hes> what canadian plagued glove the more impressive professional careers at brook or bianca and dak prescott what this is almost unthinkable to <hes> that a guy a single man wasn't happy when someone backed up a brinks truck in his driveway with thirty million dollars in greenbacks in it and he said no no no. That's no good drive that thing on out of here cowboy quarterback dak prescott it has indeed turned down a thirty million dollar a year offer that is hard to imagine yeah you know. I saw that this morning that he was offered thirty. He's going to ask for forty and they think they'll settle somewhere in between there. Do you think okay thanks for that tips. They're gonna okay. They're going to settle somewhere in between there. You don't forget is making that kind of dole. You gotta be the i. I guess you would have to be the best in the league. You know if you're gonna if you're gonna make the best kind of money and i don't think his stats look anywhere near that that i know the one thing is they were ten and six last year. I think he's been there three years. I don't know if he's that improved steve. I don't think he's setting records. We certainly not the best quarterback in the n._f._l. That's a fact but you can't really base it just on salaries because if view that then then you believe that kirk cousins is the sixth best quarterback in the n._f._l. While he is in fact the sixth highest paid guy so it always comes comes down to what's the market value when it's time for you to get paid and then you start measuring yourself amongst other quarterbacks around the league because that's what it's all about comparables does right <hes> <hes> doesn't necessarily mean. You're worth that but you look at a guy like right now. A carson wentz is scheduled to make thirty two million dollars and right now. Dak prescott stats are better across the board than his fact. He's three and one against carson wentz as well and so that's i mean of course thirty million dollars. A year is ridiculous. I mean five million dollars. A year is ridiculous for one f- in guy but it's just about comparables and keeping up with the joneses you know you and i do a nice podcast here together if you're making five million dollars a year you are thrilled with it but if you hear that i'm making thirty million it doesn't mean you're not getting you. Don't have enough to pay the mortgage but it's not fair. I want to get paid like that guy. Yeah i mean that's life. That's reality in this. This big bad ass world world of of sports salaries that how how do you figure it out. How'd you guys say no is the aging phones. If it goes it just hung up the phone thirty large thirty large now nope it's going to happen. I want forty. What are you doing here. Can you imagine how bad that dak prescott sixteen year rolled self would wanna kick the twenty five year old. Dak prescott ask right. I turned down what idiot but but he makes he'll probably get more willie. You know the the the stories. He wants forty. They offered thirty and he said they're going to settle in between somewhere. Okay the untold part of this whole story that we're not getting because you know these are sources and these reports. You know always after forty million well. There's another source that saying no no they aren't asking for forty million that is totally false and so there's a lot of back and forth with where the reports are right and let's say it is thirty million though for the sake of argument how much of that thirty million guaranteed money because that truly is what it's all about great. You're offering me thirty million dollars a year but if i go through the first half for the year and then i'm struggling you know you're gonna cut me so that's that's a big part of the story. That's not being told because the guaranteed money is everything you know the other issue the on these things steve which we don't often talk about almost never you know that we're chopping on the athlete for in this case saying no to thirty million you just as the owner of the team shimmy jimmy jones is that his name jerry jerry jones who by the way it's been thirty million face right over the years not bad though is not bad. It's finally come around. You know it's finding cymru why so serious santa's why so serious you know what there's there's this whole angle of the agents steve involved in this stuff and there's probably a couple of reasons that <hes> they wouldn't take thirty million from the agents point of view. <hes> one is <hes> an agent told me one time that their sole job in representing.

"The Rb computer web poll today's will Anthony, declare re-sign with a sense next season, he came in, in that trade with Columbus last season of the deadline and came in and was pretty good. He had something like fourteen points in the twenty games. He played last year. And so did pretty well. And if one over some sense fans he signs, a one year deal worth one point six five million for the coming season all kinds ice time. And so will he resign next season, I guess the also paraphrase and say is he going to be any good this year because if he's any good, he's going to resign with a sense? I think the issue with declare is that he's kind of a Mike Hoffman sort in that he can dazzle you with his speed and his off. Offense. But either he can't won't play defense. And the new head coach is DJ Smith. Who comes from a defensive background. He played defense he coached the defense with the Leafs and do declares. Not exactly about the defense and John Tortorella. But a week before declare got traded from Columbus to Ottawa, absolutely rip do Clair new one about just not getting it. I don't think he knows how to play.

"They came together to support tornado relief efforts in their community and then later on, they ended up being the winners of the Chevrolet, good deeds Cup. Check it out today faces MAG dot CA and there you can as well. Find out how you can get issues mailed to you. So our question today is about DJ Smith? No sense. Head coach, he was officially hired on Thursday, at the big media tour on Friday as well. Are you happy as a sense fan with a choice of DJ Smith, essense coach? It's a simple. Yes or no? That's our RB computing web poll and it's funny Jimmy. How when you sit down and talk to somebody how they can kinda veer you in a direction, I was keeping an open mind, I was non-committal on it. You were kinda worried about it. I mean he's only been here a couple of days, but his big media tour. He came off extremely well. You know, this is the big bad ass business of sports. And whether you like it or not. But professional sports is all based on wins and losses and say what you want about the guy. That's good that he's, you know, you need a media savvy guy. But it you know that's what I like to look at twenty games in, you know with a guy and it's it's can you win hockey games. Right. The same thing with a player, you know, as good trade. Have they done this thing, very well? If the guy goes, minus twenty you know, and as in his first ten games, or something he's toast, you know. So that's the big unfortunate side of it, I guess, or or on another hand a good reality about a good reality about it that, that we're not into the feel good situation here. But typically, the Ottawa Senators gotta do something quick and get a going. But we'll see you know, we'll see. He's got a track record of winning. Here's a great track record of winning from his junior years. His OH L resumes. Outstanding he won the twenty fifteen. Memorial Cup is a head coach. He went to other memorial cups as an assistant coach. And so, yeah, you're right. I mean, of course if stuff goes wrong, and, and there's no success on the ice this fall, then I'll feel differently. If things come apart from that perspective, but you can't do anything he can't win a Stanley Cup. You can't compete in the month of may. When your team's been limited for month and a half. So the here and now he said, all the right things, and I would say that I'm relatively optimistic. Got some good feedback. Good member Graham Ramstad said I wasn't sure when I first heard the name DJ Smith because like most I didn't know much about him, but after doing a bit of research and listening to the interviews. I'm more optimistic about next season with Smith running the bench. Matt grant rights. I think it was the cheapest choice doesn't necessarily mean the worst. But it doesn't make me think it's the best. I'm disappointed in who Dory on. Didn't interview that being Bradshaw. And finally, what's the deal hiring candidates after marathon interviews of over seven hours? Maybe add a little structure that interview and Matt Cox, finally they picked a good coach, but until they start giving their top players, long-term contracts. It wouldn't matter if it was Scotty, Bowman or jungle behind the bench. But think of it this way, you know, could you imagine what it must be like to, to be interviewing John Tortorella, right? And it'd be gone this fucking nuts. Man. Who we are here, although that guy strikes me as a guy that can really turn on the charm when he needs to have seen enough of him to know that when it comes time to be prickly. He's awesome at that. And that's his rep. We've seen it again. And again, but I've also seen him in moments where he was just extremely charming and likable. So he can turn it on when he needs to. But back to the poll on DJ Smith being hired by the sins. What do you think? I don't like the higher. I don't like the higher. I think they had to get a big ticket guy. I think the team is in dire need of. Like that, to get get the get the attention away from all the ownership stuff. So granted nice guy and all that stuff. I just don't like. I just don't think it's a very good idea. I think they should try to get someone with more experience. Yeah, that's me. Nobody knows for sure. And it's about the combination of the two. It's is right coach and high enough calibre of players, and then get some breaks after that. That's Stanley Cups are one. So there's nothing to say that, you know, a tried and true guy, who's coached six hundred games in the league is, is an automatic success with the thirty first place auto a senators either. So it's just all. It's all preference at this age. It's all I could say this though having sat down with DJ Smith on Friday for half an hour. I understand why the Ottawa Senators were impressed by him. They all would be, you know, they all would be, you know, they'd all be impressive in an interview, you know, I hope DJ Smith listens to this. Right. And then goes on to win fifteen of his first twenty games. And he can give me the finger and the reason I bring that up, which was hilarious. I think. Brooks, KEPCO course who won the PGA apparently, Brandel Chamblee didn't give them a shot. And of course, he shot twelve under for the first two rounds of I shot seven under. And then Brandel the next eight had come back on there. And Brando said I just feel like the guy gave me the finger for four and a half hour straight, you know how played it was. It was hilarious. So I was gonna say, I don't know if you're on social media today to see some of the all the basketball analyst, all saying after the raptors had fallen behind to nothing in the eastern final like just absolutely taking a spadeful of soil and dumping it on the raptors. They're done. They're done. And some calling the box, all the bucks, are actually gonna go on to win the whole thing talking heads. Don't know everything. Obviously. Right. Anyway, I I've got nothing against E J Smith. I don't know him. So, and I can only hope for the best for the team, but I think it's a big tall order. Well, it's pretty clear based on are Rb computing web poll today that the people that voted anyway are down with it with seven hundred one votes. And the finale of the poll is sixty eight percent. Yes, they like to hire thirty two percent. Say no. I lot of write in votes of I'm indifferent. I'm numb to the Ottawa Senators right now. But most people were kind of on board with it. So that's today's web poll for Rb computing. If your desktop notebook or phone or giving you trouble, I recommend going to see my friends at Rb computing for over twenty years. They provided high quality computer and phone repairs for the Ottawa region are computing dot com. One, oh six Menton place in balance corners, again, on Friday morning at a chance to sit down with a new sense head coach DJ Smith. And he was obviously pumped I can't be anymore excited. You know what? Yeah, it's been. It's been a, you know, a wild say thirty six hours for sure. I've waited a long time for this and ready. So, you know,.

"Jacques Martin was probably if you ask me you prior to you today to give my best guess, Jacques Martin was going to be my guess, I thought that he made the most sense, but, you know, even guys like him and Patrick wa and, and Rick Bowness. There's a reason they're not coaching right now. Rick Bowness has been an assistant for so long shock. My ties been an assistant for a very long time as well. There's that perception of okay. We're gonna get accused of going after the retread. Coach. Maybe they wanted more money too, because that's always going to be a factor for this organization. If they're coming out. Let's say they go ahead. Sorry. No. If they're coming at you for big dough, then, that's obviously going to make a DJ Smith more attractive, if he's willing to work for X amount cost effective. That's what the sends are. But what's, what's going to be the difference between say there was only two of them available in Rick, Bowness, and DJ Smith. Okay. Say those are the only the only two guys available for the job or was, you know, who are you picking their who are you picking and first of all, I don't think the money would be that much different. I don't know how demanding a bonus can be for for a position as a head coach. But, but he's been arrays way more experienced in the other guy. And I'm picking Rick bonus, you know, over DJ Smith, and they were both in the same pool. Well think about Patrick wa and Rick Bowness and jock Martin. What do they have in common in that they probably made their money in the case of bonus and Martin? They're older guys, they've coached forever. And so they, they are necessarily in, you know, in a sort of need the job, sort of scenario, or pick up my family and do this and come to Ottawa. I look at Pat. Trich while he's obviously made a ton of money as well. I would say that those guys unlike DJ Smith when they get a certain number thrown at them. The other three guys a chance of being insulted by that just at a policy policies, not that they need the money. It's like we wanted to pick my family go be a head coach in the NHL a head coach in the NHL for that amount of money. Those three guys, I think would be more likely to be offended by it. Then a DJ Smith who may have been reaching the end of shelf life as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs anyway, because some of his colleagues were asked to go away today. Well, but how much how much difference can it be? You know, so, you know, DJ Smith, did they give the amount of money science for I don't know if you have to disclose coaches salaries, you do not know. Yeah. So, so maybe the guys making five hundred four hundred five hundred grants six sixty three hundred grand, you know, he would be half a million and a million, I would guess, okay? And what's Rick Bowness going to get? He's not a three million dollar Coachman. Nobody's the assistant coach in Tampa. Maybe you know maybe for a couple of hundred extra thousand dollars. He's like, yeah, just hanging out here. This is fun anyway. We'll see what happens. I just get a feeling that, that they're okay, we'll just let's just do this. You know, a little different if it was Pittsburgh. Didn't have the best season. They had or the islanders got in the plans for pretty good. So even teams like that, you know, you know if they got rid of their coach onto go further the guy run its course and they went with the DJ Smith. Okay. I get that. You know, I got that in a team that's had lots of success in Pittsburgh. I don't get it with Ottawa that needs tons of help the needs tons, a help. It's just a matter of not wanting to spend the money whether they have the money or don't have the money you know, there's a reason these seven were chosen for various reasons, and not the least of which is there. None of them are expensive. None of them would be expensive to bring it in the NHL. In the meantime, the Quenneville the McLellan's venos- who went to new teams this year. They, they aren't even in the discussion at all right? So DJ Smith was introduced a news conference today by Pierre Dory on as the next head coach of the sends and Dory on was asked why did DJ Smith come out ahead in this seven man coaching battle? That's a good question for us. DJ. Checked off all the boxes. We felt we interviewed the seven best candidates for this job. And when we went back over it, there were numerous things that we liked about Jay. The one thing is passion. I think his level of drive in his level, to have success will match no other candidate.

"News of the day, this is Thursday, DJ Smith. Now, the new head coach of the Ottawa Senators, I will talk plenty about that with that means for the future that organization was should probably also talk about the new assistant coach in Toronto, Paul McFarland, but we'll talk about the headline. I DJ Smith New bench boss in the nation's capital so the week that Gabe was fired. We can't we come on Hakkinen Canada was two days later, and I put up a list of six names. I think I've put up and I think number of those guys were guys who got interviewed like Jok Martin was on that list. Mark Crawford was on that list. Troy man was on that list. You know, I can't remember who else I put up. But the moment I got off the air, I had a text from someone who shall renewing nameless. And he goes, you're over six by I'm telling you the net coach, the Ottawa Senators is going to be. And I'm like, okay, hit me goes DJ Smith. And I go, okay. I mean, it's not the most ridiculous suggestion. But why do you believe that? And this was the person who told me that when Bush was hired. They wanted permission to speak to DJ and they were denied by then Lula morale on the Toronto Maple leaves. You know, he said, you watch, he's going to be in the mix and he's going to be the guy and I texted that person today, I said, you are the true insider, and he goes, what is it done? I go just announce it and he goes, not that much of an insider. But and so he he's debuting Monday game one Boston and St Louis in the intermission with you guys. That's right. You should because I said to him, you were bang on like tip of the hat respect is given where it is earned. And this person was bang on. Why did Smith hobbies? That's his Asian that really liked them. You know, DJ's got a good reputation from when he won the memorial Cup with the Oshawa generals is very. Clear this Ottawa team really liked them. There's no question about that. Now, there was a time where I thought for sure it was going to be Jacques Martin, I thought for sure it was the biggest thing that organization needs to be as quiet. We've talked about this. No, no more four alarm blazes. You've got good young players. There's, there's hope for the future in terms of your roster. Just let those guys do the talking, and, you know, Jacques the market likes them, they respect what he's done there. He's a boring, quote, he's never going to say anything that's going to scream, a forty eight point headline. And, you know, he's he's been around. I really thought he was going to be the guy and then people started saying to me, while I'm hearing, if we're going to hire jock. Then maybe you know what? What's the difference in human Mark Crawford? And then some other really interesting names, got in there like, you know, Rick, Bowness and other guy with Ottawa ties, and, you know, the why. And, you know, like I said, I thought with wa I thought it was a toe. It'll wildcard. And, and I think that was also as much Patrick wash saying, I'm back. I'm coming back in. I don't know how serious a candidate he was. But there was a point where I do think that see Ottawa had one interview with Smith and I think they talked to him again later. And once I kinda heard that I was like, okay, there's something there's something no. During the press conference mentioned that he actually went over video. The DJ Smith that part of the interview process was going through video now, Doug MacLean on hockey. Central noon today, talked about when he would interview coaches, it'd be a lot when he when he would interview for jobs, they'd be a lot of blackboard stop. So maybe this is an extension of it, so happens a lot..

"So I, yeah, I just, you know, little endgame analysis and wit and army text me every now and again, and give me crap when we were playing the penguins and tell me, I look like shit on the on TV. One thing. What one cool thing about us you? You can't came in when guys started getting paid big boy money, but you also get the the the end of the old school era where where you know where guys were still drinking a lot on the plane playing cards and you and you, you still have all these unbelievable stories and situations. You found yourself in. Yeah, I, I can't tell you how how lucky I was to come into the the situation that I did one. I mean when I came into Colorado, I mean it was it was so many veterans and and honestly, a DJ Smith who the assistant coach of the lease. Now he got hurt in training camp and that was the only reason a spot opened up on the team. I think he had an eye injury which was pretty serious, and and now it's kinda how I slid into like the number six offensive spot. And then there's planning playing with all those guys that year. And then you know, you kind of you're able to establish yourself. And I mean the games change, we say it all the time. The how. I mean, how much is the game change? I mean, that was like my thing was skating for my entire career. I used to be able to skate away from guys, and then all of a sudden it was like, you're just getting crushed left, right and center is, hey, every guy to then bars. ELS Arpan your trip in the pocket ball yet taking one step yet. Oh gosh. That's like nightmare stuff for speaking of the contracts, you'll last one was with the Boston Bruins here, Aaron Boston. That's where I'm talking from Georgia. Expe-? Yeah. What was your experience like? Hey, you played here little about a season a half, roughly. Did you.
