"dixie chicks" Discussed on Sound Opinions

"Country that's in a minute on sound opinions. And we are back. If you're a regular listener to this show, you probably know plenty about the many, many amazing female artists that are making country music today. We certainly are fans of many of them. But if you're only getting your information from the country music industry and the radio establishment in that genre, you might not even know these artists exist. That's right, Jim, our guest today, Marissa moss, has a great new book on the phenomenon called her country. In that book, she focuses on three artists maren Morris, Mickey guyton, and Casey musgraves, three artists that we've talked about extensively on the show. She discusses the challenges they face in overcame in the last decade. And I began our conversation by asking why she chose those three artists in particular to focus on. I chose this three because they all have very different paths to unconventional success in country music. But they're also all three from Texas and kind of a relatively close geographic area. And that gave me a kind of fine tune way to examine their careers in ways that were kind of like comparing and contrasting with the common denominator of being Texas artists. And making that same journey in Nashville around the same time. And also in Texas, you have Miranda Lambert coming from Texas. You have the chicks. You have, I mean, how you Beyoncé and lizzo. Some going on there. And my dad lived in Texas for many years, and I have, you know, I spent summers there, you know, so I have a connection kind of a fascination with it. Well, in Texas with the reputation, right, Marissa of being the alternative Nashville. The anti Nashville, the outlaw. It doesn't come out exactly where it's, you know, the first half is Texas in the second half of Nashville, of course. But, you know, I wanted to have a bit of that dual life and I kind of wanted to say and have this subtext in there of talking about talking about Texas in a way that is really reflected in what's going on kind of a nerd conversation right now. You know, if you even politically in the way that people will kind of dismiss Texas and say, you know, these terrible bills or something will come across and people will say, oh, you know, will everyone in Texas deserve that, you know? Yeah. And I wanted to kind of have that exploration into Texans and southerners and country music fans being far more than people often dismiss them as being. Yeah, we all have loved ones in Texas who are not thinking like the people in the Texas state House. Right. Exactly. And same here is Nashville, you know? Yeah. Yeah, these are iconoclastic artists, no doubt. And Texas is known. I mean, let's go back to Willie Nelson, right? You know, I mean, iconoclasts seem to grow there. Despite what people may think they know about Texas. But it's interesting to me your book sort of addresses a subject that I think is, you know, there's a systemic problem in country music. And it probably could be said just about anything on our society, but it's certainly true in country music. The good old boys club is going to run things. And there are moments. You begin the book in a moment where there seem to be a breakthrough. There had been a number of a cluster of women artists, then Dixie chicks, now the chicks, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes, who are big country hits, Shania Twain, and then it went away. The bubble burst, and now we're back to the good old boys club. And guyton and Morrison musgraves are sort of fighting through that. A startling statistic, the Marissa reports that should frame this entire conversation. A mere 16 percent of the country airwaves is devoted to female artists. 16%. And that's actually the high estimation. So sometimes it's different. There's been a bunch of different statistics mostly done by a really great data scientist at a canon and named doctor Jada Watson. She found a lot of times it's 10%. But I'm interested in that fluctuation. Like there be times where it's proven that women can have hits that'll cross many genre lines and become embraced by the public in a massive way, but it doesn't stick. It should have proven that women more than deserve their place at the table, right? And yet that never really seems to happen. Why do you think that is? Man, I mean, it's a lot of reasons. I mean, I think when that period was happening in the late 90s, mid to late 90s. You know, when most people think of country music of that era, you think of women, you know, with the exception of maybe Garth Brooks. If you don't really, if you're not a super country fan, you think of the women you mentioned, fatal Shania Twain, the chicks. I mean, I think it was scary for a lot of people. And I think, you know, there are a lot of elements. It's a really long answer, and I guess in part why I wrote the book, but I mean, you have consolidation happening around, you know, rampant consolidation. Happening around that time, you lead into 9 11 when you have sort of this emergence of patriotic nationalistic country songs that jingoism female ballot doesn't really work up against a song about putting a boot in a terrace ass on a playlist. It's just, you know, it's kind of weird programming. And then you have what happened with the chicks and speaking out against the war in Iraq, there are a lot of elements that were just kind of stewing to make people skeptical of women. To let them indulge their already preexisting misogyny. But I mean, in a more concrete way that the more that you reduce the amount of times that people hear women on country radio, the less familiar, it becomes and therefore people don't react as well to women's voices when you actually do hear it. So we have kind of created this myth that, you know, programmers will tell you a women don't like listening to women or people turn the dial when they hear women on country radio and to some degree we've created that scenario to be true because radio is all about what's familiar. You know, you're in the car, you're like vacuuming, whether you're earbuds in or whatever you want to hear. Stuff that's familiar. And if you're not familiar with women's songs, then you're not going to maybe respond as well to it. It's not like some predisposed genetic disgust towards like high pitched women's voices or like whatever people want to tell you. But it is like that we, you know, we've created this culture scarcity. So much that, you know, women aren't getting those results that maybe make people feel empowered to play them more.

Book Burning (MM #3975)

"The NASA minute. With Kevin mason. Over the weekend, I saw a story about a pastor burning books, and I thought I wonder which southern state it was in, and then it looked and saw Tennessee. I thought for sure, okay, somewhere over on the far right side of the state. When I dug into the story, I found out it was about 5 miles from my house. A pastor from a Nashville suburb decided to have a book burning last week, burning Twilight and Harry Potter books and items of the occult like ouija boards. Why did he do it? Well, the game publicity, of course. Because as we all know, book burning is most associated with things that happened back in the 40s, 50s and 60s. I remember some radio stations back in the day, not burning books, but were crushing compact discs of the Dixie chicks. All for a stunt. This was a stunt too. I don't know what the purpose of the stunt was to raise attention for the church perhaps. I guess we all have the right to burn whatever we want to burn. The number one book in the nation right now, a book that's been banned in schools called mouse. And it's number one on The New York Times Best Seller list because people want it banned. The more you burn, the more you ban, the more people are interested.

The weather rolled knew how severe it was going to get. I mean i kind of thought. Maybe they should have pushed this whole thing like it was yeah it was created with a lot of good intentions but to have a homecoming and like a welcome back concert when things were not quite as sunny as they were when they announced the concert didn't think the delta variant would be roaming around in a horrendous hurricane so you know life had other plants also I've got no transitions. Because he's such crazy. Other and monday tillerson's officially signed up for tick-tock and in her first post the popular renounce that her new version of red will also be coming out on final on november nineteenth. And it's available for presale now on her website so november nineteenth was the release date. She had to say yes. She had yet to say whether there'd be. That's going to be one heck of a big week for taylor yes. It is and accompanying her. Vinyl announcement was taylor's very first tic tac video in which she lip syncs to the song. Screw face capital by uk. Rapper dave. She picked for very specific reason because the song name drops her in the line. My outstanding payments swift. Like taylor. if you'd like to see taylor thinking to a british. Grime song then go to during the video. She also cycles through The looks of her forms recent eras. So we've got folklore and evermore from last year two thousand twenty and then fearless taylor's version from the spring and now read taylor's version coming in This if you're a taylor van getting fat it is wild like full was what july of last year twenty twenty. The amount of relief is yeah. It's insane so folks. No yeah folklore was july. Evermore was december somber rose was fearless and november is read the pace and like you guys lady a tweet. I saw a tweet like two days ago. That was that said lover came out two years ago only two years ago did lover come out. This is what happens. When you're not touring you have a little bit of time at home to focus on re recording your previous material. Yes extra time on your hands. So here. And also hyped up. Taylor's vinyl announcement by sharing a clip of himself re-recording his harmonies of their red duet. Everything has changed so in addition to the new version of that twenty twelve duet ad is also included on a from the vault song for radd called run So lots of add on on rudd. Taylor's version coming So head over to bill dot com for the latest on the road. Re-release as well as taylor swift's journey into tick-tock which i'm sure we'll be covering extensively i mean also. I saw the track list for the red taylor's version. It's like fifty songs. Or something riddick. Gifty no it's not fifty. I was like wait. Did i miss an extended extended. It looks like it's double the length of the previous album for i forget on long after but it's twenty something songs and like one of them is like a ten minute version of yeah of all too well which has been a rumored things floating out there for a long time. That's a fan favorite. We had we have a superfan on staff ashley who she. When when red was first announced the next release. And taylor said this is how many tracks are going to be on it ashley. Set out to guess the track list. She did a pretty great league really good job. She had all too well. She had babe by sugarland. Because that was coming from the red time period What's the one that little big town did You know you know what i'm talking about. Yeah anyway she had a bunch of stuff that was like she just new. They know good. Golly colleague lots of taylor news lots of Hurricane news some combo hurricane cova news. It's fun stuff. I have some fun news today. Well now for a completely non-related item. Here's our fifth non-sequitur. It's time for the site of the week forty years ago this week the go-goes first hot one hundred hit our lips are sealed debuted on the hot one hundred chart. The track arrived at number ninety on the august. Twenty ninth nineteen eighty-one data chart and eventually peaked at number twenty. In december of that year the single was the first hit from the billboard. Two hundred number one album beauty and the beat which reached number one on the list dated march sixth nineteen eighty two and spent six weeks on top. The album would also launch the number two peaking hot one hundred hit. We got the beat. Notable about the go-goes beauty and the beat was the first and still only number one album by an all female rock band and being being very specific there because we've had groups groups like destiny's child and the supremes go to number one. But we've also had the dixie chicks Will the former dixie chicks now just the chicks Who many consider a country band. Yeah they've also had number one albums Later this year the go-goes will be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in the performers category alongside tina turner carole king jay z. Foo fighters and todd rundgren. So he had it forty years ago this week. The go-goes our lips are sealed. Debuted on the hot one. Hundred chart ashrina history-making career on the billboard charts for go-goes reached the end of our all over the place show. I just learned that beauty and the beat got to number one on my birthday week. The we like the week. I was born.

"And welcome to this episode of the weekly zeitgeist These are some of our favorite segments from this week. All edited together into one nonstop. infotainment laughs extravaganza. Yeah so without further ado. Here is the weekly zeitgeist miles. We are thrilled to be joined in air third seat by the comedian and thought leader behind bradley cooper's a star is born takes place in an alternate reality where nine eleven never took less air. Tv writer and producer. Whose work you can see. On a couple of small outlets called net flicks and cartoon network may hurt him You can hear them on jack. Am hot and rich. This podcast is self care. Please welcome the hilarious. Kate bilo thank you so much for having me. It's so good to be back here. Welcome back the yellow one dream. Yes a lot of you have subdued yellow. Look today pops of yellow today. So i am wearing a black and white checkered shirt with pops of sunflowers right. Yeah because i didn't invent yellow. And i do almost exclusively where yellow but i have shifted my style into slutty crazy taxi summer. We'll just my current fashion theme. So i'm wearing. I'm wearing anything that would like kind of be a yellow like nineteen sixties. Taxis so like lots of checkers. Black and white chequers have made their way into my fashion along. Rollout and you like abbas aba type swords like abbas albo sort of aesthetic. Yes exactly abbas aba aesthetic. I mean you know. We'll get into this season's technically it is summer. But i think it's fall right so i should update the theme. Obviously seasons are obviously a state of mind. Abbas aba what a pool i haven't had. I forgot about habits. Abbas alpha grabs days. you know. that's how bad fucking how are what does it have baked fucked me up. Because that's like a scene where he's like abbas aba. You're my only friend and alba and i remember always at seven eleven. Mcmanus should look like a weird as cab and then because i fell in love with baked. Then i started eating. Actually these are kinda good Yes it's long lasting fun. I don't think i've had an abbas. Since like i was like trick or treating age. Yes he and in my neighborhood i was. I don't know for whatever reason there was not abbas abbas being handed out where i like never encountered it in a halloween. You know out in the wild. Until i did it myself at a seven eleven so i don't just to give you an idea of my struggle as a child ca. I just discovered magnum opus. About why bradley cooper's a star is born takes place in an alternate reality where nine eleven never took place yes. I'm convinced key people give them a little. It can be fully encapsulated. And just you know a teaser. But just to give they. They need to go check it out. Watch the wash the entire a powerpoint presentation themselves out. Yes it is a twenty plus minute video essay where i make the very strong case. That bradley cooper's a star is born. Starring lady gaga is a movie that takes place in an alternate reality. Where nine eleven never happened. There's a lot of you know things to strengthen that these statement that i you could just go to my pinch tweet. It's pinch tweet. Kate raft but you know one of the things that alec baldwin was like the get the host of snl when allie was the musical guest for the season finale. I i thought this was back when you know. The movie came out. Trump was president at alec was doing all the all the trump impressions and i was like. There's no way alec would be the host of the season finale. If this was a universe trump was president. And then i did a lot of thinking and i realized trump got elected because nine eleven never happened. And there's so many more things but that's just one of them. Yeah the level of fame. I found very compelling but like he is pre nine eleven famous. He's he's like his john country as rock. Which like just isn't like a thing that is as popular as it is in the movie right right. Universe kind of was headed in that direction. Like wilco was getting really popular. Right right as nine eleven. Hit and it's like what. What if we kept going on that trajectory exactly. And i think that if the dixie chicks didn't get cancelled for saying george bush was bad there would have been a more like politically ambiguous country. Music scene Whereas like after nine eleven. I feel like it became way more like conservative. Yeah that's so nine. Eleven never happened. It would be more like everybody would listen to country instead of it. Being like this like politicized like we love america genre. Yes this the film is meant to ask. Get the audience to examine what our world would have looked like had we not just launched into this failed war on terror and exactly exactly as we get to the twenty year anniversary of nine eleven next month I think it's important for people to watch my party. What is something from your search istrie. Something reminds search. history I i i was looking and literally my search history for the past. Three days is all just the names of bars from bar rescue survive. I've been obsessed with this bar rescue marathon and that i spend the entire day just going. I wonder if that would still exists. And that. I'm just googling like fifth in by the ruse like all these ridiculous names. He comes up with for these lay companies. One was like the copper rocket he changed like a thriving bar into the copper rocket. It didn't survive. What i mean did you. So i'm guessing you also. Are you watch rescue. Oh yeah. I'm myself i mentioned this. Because did you see that clip of him on laura ingram either that or he's like workers like dogs and you star ninety dogs obedient and it's like oh no but i like if you watch bar rescue. It's you could have said a word. It's like if you watch bar rescue. He will be like say you're a dumb idiot sandwich in front of your grandmother like tell your father you're a failure talent gala gala now so like honestly john taffer like that was him trying to probably make a compliment like for his sale of like what is okay to say. Have you seen any bars that you know on bar rescue. Because there's one in the valley that i grew up like never going to because it was like the old washed like elderly bar. That was not going in there that it was like then it was on and i was like. That's what it looks like inside but it's always a startling thing when you see a local there they did one in chicago and like i mean river north which is literally just were tourists. Hang out and they were like we're going to turn this into the local and may get like a bar where local chicago people wanna go. And i lived in chicago for seven years. No one goes to that place like it is just full of tourists. Who are like. Oh my god. I want to go to the bar from the bar rescue episode. Roy rabbi way. Which one was it before it became the local. What was the vibe in. That place was it the the art the musicians and shit in there. Yeah like it was something like beats notes or something like that like some jazz musicians and he was just like this is disgusting music. Does that make money.

"Her last album contains a bunch of songs that to me are responding to this particular moment of celebrity in being billy eyelash like it's about two thousand twenty one. I'm confronted with that. I've achieved so much. What where can i go from here. Is there any place to go. And i have to say even though. I love a lot of the music on that album. Namely the song oxytocin. The lyrical content felt like a letter to fans. You read one time. It made me want to revisit it less than the future so i almost wonder if when artists start responding more directly to situations like this if they're limiting the potential the replay value of their music. They need rodney jerkins. because when that she's overprotected that's still years later. But like even like like remember when dixie chicks did taking the long way and they're just here's a song about having said something shitty about george w bush now listening to it now. It's like man. I can hear the nokia phone i had at the time. It's wild that we're what we're talking about right now is a fairly innocuous song right and then it creates this like truly range depressing response. Online people calling there. Was that horrible horrible tweet. That called liz. A mammy which is a first of all. If you haven't seen freaking douglas sirk do not step into the room. Okay don't understand. And i like just don't but also the thing that i i think sometimes gets lost when we discuss the responsi- lizardo and genders and people people in general right but also a lot of black women I've seen a lot of the fat phobia coming from like these interracial like same gender spaces. And i feel like that's what's like tougher tease out. You know which is that women are looking at her and drawing these conclusions and making all these projections. And i almost i care much more about that weird like internalized hatred and misogyny than i do like whatever like you know. Blow hardewyk geissinger online. I feel like you know this has been a constant thing that lizards unfortunately had to deal with it. Because i feel like you know would she'd i come out She was constantly dealing with the fact that people said that her music was for white people. Right you know. And i think that that also comes from you know like our own community people wanting to like dislike her because they feel like this music is it for us and that's why she wants to be like black people rock and roll like i'm making music black woman making music but i don't know you know it's it's hard. It's hard seeing that stuff lobbied at her Especially when you think that like people get all the time you know. I mean whitney got that. When she first came out you would think being cosigned by prince would be enough but you know lazaro has the struggles. They're sorta something about both of these within being on a song for me too because this happens the cardi all the time to anytime she does anything. People are constantly attacking her not in the same ways. but i remember like literally when wild side came out like Cardi was apologizing to people for ruining normandy song. People saying why you put cardi on this song attacking her having normany releasing tearful messages about how happy she was to have cardi on the song and then weeks later. You have cardiac having to do that. Same thing liz lizardo. It's unfortunate that liz. Oh just still like internalize all this every time it. She releases a project or does anything. But i would also say that. It's also unfortunate that the intensity of her responses which i love art matching the music for me. I think something. That's nice those. We are getting pop culture pregnancy glamorization moment which we have shockingly few of like. I'm still thinking of the demi moore magazine cover. That's still the definitive version. You know we had beyond says. Reveal like amy poehler on. Snl what went on. Yeah but it's like under ten still. I guess it's a minor revolution every time. This occurs still. Yeah cardi's pregnant was success and with a child you right because it's easier to you know be cynical about certain things in pop culture but i have to say it's like nuts that every time a pop girl drops a song cardi b. is on it like we have something like it's just never really happened. I would say with this consistency in pop music per se if we want to talk about hip hop rb. That's different right. There was a moment. You know what kim was on every track and all that. But i think that it's like lear. Entering this era where like when it comes to the male rapper. He is becoming obsolescent. You have a summer. that's being defined by. Who was the biggest male rapper. At the time it was baby right and then he like literally as architect of is on downfall. But at the same time. It's being countered by cardi b. Being like the representative the ambassador for a lost art in my mind which was like the rap pop duo and so. I think we need to acknowledge that this is really amazing that women especially rappers not just her. There's rico you know cash ball. There's so many women who i think in my mind if i was fifteen years old if i thought about what rap is i would associated with women sees I wouldn't associated with men. And i think he dropped her album this week. Even it's getting of pop rap features the end of snoop dogg culture which member for the longest time. It just like here. We go the mumbled sixteen bars about the members of pussycat dolls. Whoever's around right it was always like snoop or like a. nellie or like a ludicrous. You throwing something but now. I've really enjoyed that. Women are co-signing each other. They are the people that i'm constantly listening to. Because you know what. I was growing up there. Were the people who i gravitate it to. So i gravitated towards kim and foxy and train. It you know. I was like that's what i want to hear at. It feels so great like going out now. Hearing hip hop all the time you know like even like a gay bar setting because it's pop music because it's women i understand. This is incredibly subjective. Am i wrong. Or like the four most prominent female rappers also the funniest rappers cardi meghan missy little camp to me when i think of wraps that also make me like gag laughing with what they go go to. I'm laughing every time while you leave off mickey o. N. nikki i let the fifth one. Yes so bringing the different conversation. No we but yeah. I also want to like some of the new girls to are hilarious. Like does your cat who is not even just a rapper. Like she truly is. I mean she's like the. Liza minelli is hilarious to me. Digs up when i step in the party. Yes as the elliott had the funny lyrics..

"To sit on. The guy's lap cramped little as played with like the one seat shit. You'd have to do that. You'd have to push through. Whatever you level or homophobia is you know depending depending on automatic pilot which i don't even know if you have that option those little fucking plates. What's the deal with mean. They just like cars where you can buy the ford escort of planes. What the fuck would you do that. And he want. The periphery five all. Just take it as bite right off the lot. Thank you final interior. Anyways was just thinking how much time i spend. Just wasting much of people getting kicked in the balls all the porn. I have to sift through the to find something that even remotely turns me on at this point. Because i've watched so much of that fucking shit porno i watched. I actually apologized to the three women that were in it when i was done of got it. Oh jeez what am i am. Sorry ladies. i've starring. Dad didn't stick around. I was just dreadful. Whatever you'll see it someday. If i ever decide to run for president you know if i don't fall in line the fucking. Nsa this is what he jerks off to anyone you know. It's pissing me off as amount of people who aren't supporting that snowden guy. I think there's a lot of people. I'm going to go out and limb here and i'm going to say there's a lot of people that don't like it spied on you know big. It's completely unnecessary. And view that snowden guy as a whistle blower not as some sort of trader. But you just know that you can't say that you can't say that shit on tv and that's not a nine eleven. That's a fucking post vietnam. I was thinking about that the other day where they had. Everybody was singing songs. Saying you know protesting against the war. Not saying whether it was right or not. But you could do that back then. And you didn't get that. Dixie chicks treatment. You know that shit where they will like. Well they add right the sing it and we have the right to disapprove of it. It's like yeah yeah you say. I didn't appreciate that. Fuck them but when you take it to the level you try to systematically destroy their ability to make to earn a living then. That's not tit for tat. That's like hey. I throw a rock at you and you drop the fucking bomb on me. Hey bill why don't you get to some topical material from this fucking decade. all right. sorry the hell was. I talk anywhere i was talking about. I got so self conscious somehow. Talking about the dixie. Back in the day you could you could fuck. You could say you you could say things and it wasn't all tied into supporting troops in love and babies and being pro ice cream and against the terrorist. It's fucking it's really childish. It's real really childish. Era that we're living it's gradually seeping into what it is that i do for a living where there's these complete nincompoops can use that word that are deciding to go to comedy shows and take jokes seriously. How old are you. I can't i can't what are you gonna do next. Go to the circus. Clown hit another cloud with a rubber hammer and goods promoting violence. He could get a concussion. No more rubber hammers at the circus. I went to fuck is wrong. When you grow up you know what i mean. I love comedians. Have this fucking level of power that they're going to do a joke. Okay and that people in the crowd are so fucking stupid. That that's going to form their worldview. Get out like if i did a joke. That was like pro chopping. Somebody's fucking hand off. I really telling me that there's people out there that are so fucking stupid that they're going to walk into a comedy show before they walked in and they had no desire to do it and felt that doing that to another human being was a terrible thing to do but then once i make a joke about it. All of a sudden is going to be a bunch of people walking around chopping people's heads off because i joked about it. It's it's it's unbelievably fucking childish. And it's condescending and i don't know i just keep seeing more and more of that type of shit by the way for people get up in arms about some of those jokes that one because i don't wanna feed the fire here but that one topic that you're talking about also can happen to a man you know so i don't know why you feel like it's it's just yours joking about that on state i'll burn the bit won't give a fuck. You know what it is at least what had happened to them. People give a shit if it happens to a guy. They people literally think it's funny. They laugh you know. I remember when that dude debt cut off by his wife is cheating on his wife and she cut his dick off and she threw it in the garbage disposal and turned it on and there was one of those shows that was ripping off. The view is the one that has the asian lady. I don't even know if it's still on but they were talking about it and they were snickering. You know what i mean. It was fucking funny to them. It's horrific it was. They found humor in. So i don't know. I fuck. I'm talking about anymore i'll let let's. Let's do a little little advertising here. I'm sorry about the clicking of the whatever this fucking buttons called. I'm sure bobby knows what is called. But he's got the latest one that got delays fucking steve job fucking space by thing I said bob. Kelly smarter than me. We're actually doing a two man comedy. Show off off. Broadway called bobby. "When I land on karate kid, I always watch it. The day. Also today that Hakim Olajuwon led the Houston Rockets to the NBA championship, the 1994 kicking the Knicks. That always feels good. Be New York. Yeah. Beat New York 27 years ago. Now I still remember like it was yesterday. All right, we'll go. Rockets. They're, uh Odd things are afoot in New Orleans this week, a day after the body of a 34 year old New Orleans woman was found in a wooded area in Russia. The mother of murdered Catherine Saru shared her final text messages with the media. On Sunday she was studying abroad at a local university found near the city of Missoni. Nava Gord? No. Yeah, it's a little used to Moscow over its a little gray and yucky. They were saddened to learn of her murder, right? Of course they were because they didn't want her to be murdered. But she has a very suspicious text messages. A lot of recorded violent crime over there in an area called Pop off, which not coincidentally, is also the name of that cheap vodka that comes in a plastic bottle. Yes, I've heard of it. Allegedly Woman Guy gave a ride, then took her to a wooded area before beating and stabbing her to death. And they're hoping that maybe some of the text messages on her phone which have been shared with investigators will reveal what happened to her over there. Yeah, that's sad, right? Just goes to show you be careful in Russia. No kidding. Russia is a dangerous place. I would just recommend not even text Russians. Don't don't be Facebook friends with Russian Well has just just ignore Russia. Have you learned nothing from the Mueller report? Avoid right. It's okay to be racist. To Russians. Yeah, well, Okay. Um have you are the grandma killer We were talking about before. That was Houston, right? Yep. They can't figure out what happened to the grandma killer. Bill in Texas is on hold. Go ahead, Bill. What's your theory about the They didn't explain what the person looked like, but they want help finding them. They there's a car in the video. They have the suspect's car on video and the people out in the parking lot. Bill. Do you have any information? You didn't do it? Did you bill Mhm. No, I didn't do it. But I I'm trying to turn this radio. I didn't do it. But I do have I do have a theory. I think that what they should do is the police when I say they I don't mean I don't mean the LD LGBT confused girl you were talking about or whatever it is. All right. Thank you. They they the police should never find them. They should never find anyone who killed a 62 year old grandmother. What should happen is that Do you remember the movie but with Gerard Butler when they killed his wife and his kids? Sort of. Yeah, Remember that guy where he went on where he went after the two to the two people that did, And then he went after the judge and the attorney. You'd be a You know all of that. That let him go. Liam Neeson was it because he had a particular set of skills? Yes, that was him. Okay, So it was Liam Neeson because he had well, No, it was Gerard butler. Liam Neeson has skills. But this guy had skills to Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. The guy that the people that did this? They should never find them. The police should never find out. Kind of like the Dixie Chicks with the song about Earl. They should just never find them. We read you loud and clear, Chief. Yeah, it's weird. I never thought we'd get wisdom from a Dixie Chicks song. Oh, excuse me. Chick song. Sorry they took out the Dixie. How long until the chicks parts offensive? "It just is very It's not a great edit know, so I don't want to offend anybody. Here s O. What's happened is that he has been suspended from his record label. And he's been dropped from a least as of yesterday. It was like 400 radio stations had had axed his his music. Um, this is not good for him at all. And it's just really disappointing that people are using this word. Even if they're drunk in its ingest like I know, I don't know about you guys, but my family just didn't say that word. And it was the worst word that you could ever say So it isn't in my brain. To say I wasn't raised by people who said that, and they definitely taught me that it wasn't something that anyone should say so it's not in my drunk in my lexicon. Even come out if I'm blackout drunk, you know what I mean? Yeah, I had a friend of mine who was a sky diver girl with me and she we went to a baseball game. All of us together my sky diving friends and she got really drunk and she was yelling it Out at like the players and we were like, Oh, my God. Like we had no idea that she would ever use this word. We were shocked. She was a fun, you know, rough and tumble girl, but we're like Whoa! Get thee to the car like we were mortified and it was like, Oh, it's just like this is not acceptable. Yeah. And There are some country artists that are green with the decision of these radio stations, and he's apologized. Yes, he has said. Kind of a version of this isn't who I am. One of her. Someone says that I always think to myself and look at it and You know, in one side of my brain I I want, you know you want to give people second chances, but from the way, he said this, I think it would be ridiculous for a two for us to assume. This was the first time he's ever said this word. I you know what I mean? I don't think this I don't think this was the first time that this is other ever come out of his mouth. And you know, this is recorded by his neighbors. So you know he was already you know that he pissed off the neighbors enough that they felt the need to start recording this Um, that when I was reading this in rolling stone, That was a fascinating aspect of this, too, That the party was so out of control and it has happened before. Um so that must be And I know right now, this is not interesting is not the right word. But this is Well, it's interesting the stories happening right now because there's a lot of discussion about cancel culture and you know, I I I don't always don't like I don't always like cancel culture. However, I do also think there are consequences. When when you say stuff they are. I mean, there are consequences, and sometimes you can't take stuff back. Um and I know the narrative right now. "And you this is the Larry O'Connor show. Yeah, we're gonna have a show 20 years ago that would be nostalgic Same way happy days was in the seventies or wonder years was done in the eighties. What would that show look like the Y two k show? Right. I think pre 9 11 would be important. I mean, certainly the story arc of the Syriza we've been, I think about it, people would be just watching cable television. No streaming if they wanted a movie that have to go to Blockbuster to get the DVD. They'd actually watch DVDs. "Healthcare is really complex and trying to allocate healthcare based on your priorities, rather than the priorities of the person who wants the care is very, very difficult. What markets do markets provide you the ability to obtain health care? Now it may not be at the price that you want, and then maybe we consider mechanisms to change the price, a charitable mechanisms. The bundling of particular insurance programs. The idea you can magically wave your one universal health care is now right and the care is excellent. It's not. That's not the way that this works. Cayman says, Hey, Ben, having spent my entire life growing up in Canada, having had plenty of discussions with family, friends and teachers about many political issues. I found a lot of people in Canada seem to have a sort of discussed for America and Americans in general, and I was confused by the sentiment. Since I tend to look up to America's A fundamentally good place. They always say Americans are ignorant Americans a racist place. American interventionism has ruined too many countries. What if something's not Americans fundamentally misunderstand about America? What should I know about America before entering into these conversations? Well, the reason that people blow this all the time is because America's media promote all the points that you just made America Army get are constantly suggesting to outside eyes that America is a horribly racist, terribly vicious and colonialist place When it comes to these points. America's history of foreign intervention does not involve America Colonial izing vast swaths of the world. Unlike, for example, the British Empire Comes to American intervention very often involves America getting involved in places where human rights violations are going on that really have very little to do with the United States. It comes to American racism. America is by polling data one of the least racist countries on planet Earth. The fact that the media blow everything out of proportion is pretty dramatic. Is the is the dramatic driver of a bizarre and perverse view of the United States abroad. The lies that are told that America by America's media are then mirrored by Europeans, who tend to believe that they're superior in many ways on even by the Canadian media, which, of course, is left wing in orientation. I mean, look, if you're left wing in orientation that you probably don't like America Super a lot, because America tends to be a rather conservative country and a lot of ways. It's more religious. It tends to believe more in fundamental freedoms. It tends to believe in the government that is not empowered to fix our problems are these are things the Europeans and Canadians? In large measure do not understand. It's also the best stuff about America. Already. Jake says. Welcome to 37 been huge fan that is menu age. Yeah, it's a little disturbing. Do you think the right actually started cancel culture when they canceled? The Dixie Chicks are being hypocritical in any way. Well, I mean, I don't think the Dixie Chicks were percent canceled. The Dixie Chicks had a right to do whatever they wanted to do. People did not have to patronize them. The basic idea that in art you know a bunch of artists getting super political in the middle of their art necessitated that you continue to watch them is kind of silly. Cancel culture really applies. When people are opera are punished for things they're doing outside the scope of what they're doing. So let's say the Dixie Chicks spoke out, spoke out about the Iraq war. But didn't actually integrate it into their music. They didn't perform about that and speak about it on the stage. Then I think, yeah. Cancel culture probably shouldn't apply to them. I watch lots of movies with people who I disagreed politically. But as far as the right promoting cancel culture. Yeah, there's cancel culture on the right. Is it anywhere near as powerful as the council culture and left? No. And when you talk about cancel culture really have to go back to the roots of this stuff, which is political correctness of late eighties early nineties that is the real origin of cancel culture in the United States. Already in just a second. We're gonna be talking with a columnist for the Federalist talking about the impact of transgender policy on the Biden at the incoming Biden administration. God help us off. We'll get to that in a 2nd 1st. Let's talk about your most valuable.

"Point. I mean, I feel like you're trying to do some revisionist history here. No, I'm I'm probably on record somewhere, saying there's something appealing about that guy. And then he became insane. And I stopped liking him. So he was, of course, the former for like, what a week? Yeah. Like 10 days he worked at the White House. Yes, communications director for the president. Hmm. Was on with Anderson Cooper. Yesterday. And he compared Trump Timothy McVeigh, take a listen Listen, You know you always get this wrong with President Trump. If you say he's going to go quietly, he'll act like a maniac on the way out, and then he might end up going quietly. I think lawyers legitimate lawyers are telling them that he's in a lot of trouble. He incited a riot. He incited it Insurrection. He's arguably at least in the 21st century. You could say Timothy McVeigh for the 20th century, but he is the domestic terrorist of the 21st century in terms of the history, the 21st century and so You still think he will be viewed is interested Terrorist I think you know. Right now we're all in shock about it because he's the president, United States and we always try to normalize that office. You and I. The rest of the world still hasn't August opinion of the office of the presidency. So you're you're reacting to it like Wow, can't really have the president be a domestic terrorist. But 50 years from now in presidential historian will look at the situation and say, my God, he didn't accept the election. He signaled prior to the election that he wasn't going to And he incited an insurrection where people descended on the Capitol building, calling for the death of his vice president. So you gotta step back Anderson and look at it objectively and look at it from 2071 not 2021. Yes, I do think he will be known throughout history as a somebody that incited domestic terrorism. Oh, He's just like Tim McVeigh age. You know, when Anderson Cooper's even like Whoa, Would you like to rephrase that? I mean, seriously, you're gonna compare him with Timothy McVeigh. Now this is where we are, But this is the thing that always happens. And this is the one thing that actually gives me some hope is these lunatics Always overplay their hand. They can't help themselves. The average person hears that and goes shut up, right? I mean, let's and I would think anybody who The Oklahoma City bombing touched in some personal way. I mean, obviously impacted the country, but I'm talking about if you had a love one, lose their life or if you had family that were, you know, involved in that in some way close to it. How do you listen to that and think that that's an okay comparison. And this is the mine and again the one thing about the left as they wolf say, if you let them talk long enough, they will say what they actually think, and they exposed themselves and this is how they actually think. That Donald Trump is on the same levels. Timothy McVeigh and by default you, you the Trump voter are on the same levels. Timothy McRae Wow.
