9 Dumb Financial Decisions Most People Make
"Brian, I'm so excited about this show because we're going to basically do a deep dive into behavioral finance into behavioral economics because a lot of what we cover are like it's blocking and tackling it's XS and os when it comes to financial decision making. But a lot of what we do when we make financial decisions has more to do with the behavior than academic nature of and that's kind of what we're going to go through what I'm hoping everybody who watches doesn't treat this as a coping mechanism. Oh, that's why I'm like that is because it's baked into the recipe. No, this is supposed to. Be something where you learn to spot what's going on because this is baked into the recipe, but there is a way for you to kind of master move beyond and figure out how you can harness the power of some of these things that are just influences that can drive your your your actions and your behavior. Absolutely. So there's two books that kind of influence show and and a lot of ways bow claims he has not read this book, but I it because everytime I when I was doing the Chris Voss book, they'll never split the difference. He's an FBI guy who was a negotiator and Use a lot of these tactics. Here's the thing. So back in the day, we'll talk a lot about back in the day you and I shared inaudible account well, frankly tightwad and you had good taste and books. This was in your but I never read this. I'm not I'm not familiar 'cause it always listening to it. I was like. That son of a gun, bow this is I can totally see when he's tried to use this on me but it just to tell you what Chris explains is that the FBI reconized after Waco Texas you know did not go well, they need to throw the book out on how they were handling hostage negotiations and other things like that. He goes into all the different behavioral components and here's what. was. What I am saying is that while our decisions may be largely irrational that doesn't mean there aren't consistent patterns, principles and rules behind how we act and once you know these mental patterns, you start to see ways to influence them. So I think the takeaway there is that human beings always act in a rational manner. We're not completely rational beings that this is a black decision this decision, this is the right decision. This is the wrong decision that's not the way that we always behave even though it seems like perhaps that. Should be the way we behave in. Syria, we should be rational functioning beings, but it just doesn't work that way and that led to you know there's the misbehaving book by Richard Thaler, which is the making of behavioral economics. Now, what's funny is if you go watch any of the interviews, Richards very quick to tell you hey I'm not the first person up with behavioral, economics actually Adam Smith, which anybody who follows me matter of fact we had a content meeting and I was because I had to give. Rabia. Whole educate low. Is huge to me I. Go last year I can remember my daughter. When she's doing her social studies when I found that they were studying. Adam Smith it made me so happy because Russia's the timing of when wealth of nations was published in the seventeen hundreds with the birth of America I don't think it's a coincidence. So there's a lot of things in in Adam Smith when he talks when he in a lot. of his writings including wealth of nations he does talk about overconfidence he does talk about loss aversion self control. So I thought it was cool that Richard gave them a shout out. But if you go deeper, Richard is going to give you examples of things that are happening. Everybody's life that are definitely influenced by behavioral economics and I think it's realistic that. We all think about money irrational even if we can be the most educated most well informed, we all approach it in somewhat of irrational manner. So. Let's jump into this I, want to set the stage for you guys. So you'll know I'm a big Disney Fan. Kind of missing going to the Disney parks because we were supposed to have done that in the spring we're going out to Disneyland and one of my favorite things when you're at Disney well I thought would be one of my favorite things a mirage. Was You get hungry and you're walking through the parking catch a whiff. Oh my gosh. That is the best smelling food that I could put my mouth and it's a Walt Disneyworld. Turkey like now. These things looked glorious. They're huge. They're scrumptious looking, but then you buy these things. And unfortunately to me, the taste is not match the smell because to me it was a very gristle field. Super Sodium filled I mean it was just not everything I thought the smell would give. But here's the thing when you pay twelve dollars and fifty cents for a Turkey leg. You eat that thing you you. You don't even if you're not enjoying it, you get it down because you got to recoup the cost of what you've dumped into that Turkey legs. So there is a behavioral finance concept that describes and so what we're GonNa do is win some stores reliable. Some examples for you guys today in the Chad if you're handle is live go and start throwing them out there. If you think you can guess watch behavioral finance concepts we're talking about thawed out there. So you just said you go to Disney you smell the Turkey leg us pay at twelve fifty, you start gnawing on it you get like three or four bytes in. Everything you thought it was, but you say, you know what I'm going to finish it. I'm going to keep eating this thing right? Isn't that what you say what I think is interest. If you do research as a whole thing about the disneyworld Turkey legs, there are bloggers who talked about you should share this with somebody. Now we're in a covert air now or that just seems ridiculous but I will tell you even pre covert I would no more wanNA share a Turkey leg. Been married twenty two years still not share. Yeah. Turkey legs. Back, in twenty eleven last time you and I went to Disney together. I don't remember US walking down shared a talked. So what is the personal finance concept that represents? A sunk cost fallacy. Here's the thing is. There's no reason if you've already dumped the money into this and you realize is just not as good as you thought, it was going to be you don't have to justify the action by continuing to consume it but guess what you will because somehow we feel like it's okay. It's the same thing if you went to a horrible concert or it's raining outside, you know in on the night of the concert, you know you, it's an ample theater. You still show up just because you've spent the money on the tickets,

Is Bob Iger back as Disney CEO? He abruptly resigned from the helm in February
"I'm Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown. Joining me is Matt Felony and Matt. We've talked about Disney a lot lately because Disney is one of the most all companies are exposed to this this disaster from this pandemic and the apparent absence or inability of our leadership to the White House to figure out how to address it but Disney is as we've talked about hotels theme Parks Bob. Iger resigned abruptly. It seemed to many people including me as CEO staying on his executive chairman in February And you know this is just the strangest thing because there was just a an article that Ben Smith at the New York Times wrote in which he says that Bob Iger has now having said that he was handing the reins to Bob Capex the head of the theme parks making him. Ceo THAT BOB. Eiger has now basically resumed running Disney are. I don't know about you. I haven't seen any announcement of that or any kind of indication that there's been a change in leadership it seems important to me. It's a huge public company and a very difficult moment and and yet you know in the same column He. This author. Ben Smith says Bob Eiger has took his eye off the ball and was more worried about his legacy. But now he's back sort of like Hallelujah. I sort of feel like what really happened here because this narrative is making no sense to me and there's a lot of why whether Bob really planned that resignation as CEO and then came back. I'm there's nothing in this world that will make me believe that was planned. Yeah it's interesting because Disney clearly not clearly but some might say. Disney was responding to that article when they put out a release a few days. Later saying that Bob Shape back the other Bob Who was elevated to the CEO position in February is joining the board of directors? Which many had said was planned all along but I think the indication there was. You know the new Bob is actually in charge. It's not the old Bob. Even though the whole Bob seems to be you know giving his strong advice and being involved in these major decisions literally saying like I'm back he's like a signaling in an email or something to this journalist that he's back and I'm like what but go on. That's the question you do have someone who has decades of experience at the Walt Disney Company there in that executive chairman position and probably feels a little bit of remorse that he left this job right as the proverbial s hit the fan and a lot of people speculated. That either did know what was coming when he did that. You know at the time. He stepped down. The Shanghai Disney park had already closed due to the virus and many experts. Were saying. Listen this is a couple of weeks away from being a global pandemic. Even if the American government wasn't saying so at the time the experts were and had that information many thought that that timing was abrupt and out of nowhere and then all of a sudden were in the middle of the biggest threat to The Walt Disney Company. In perhaps ever so. I think there's probably a little bit of remorse going on there and I think there's probably a little bit of Bringing the guy with the expertise to actually manage this very very difficult time. How about giving some clarity at? I wonder if the board didn't say excuse me. What did you just do? And how is this Bob? Shaping supposed to run the theme parks because as far as I know still no successor named for that. I mean they're closed but that's not like that doesn't mean there's no duties associated with that you know how. How is this guy now running the whole whole company? I you know I'm old enough to remember. When Michael Eisner having had a very supine board for a very long time finally had gotten enough people upset that the board turned around and ultimately dismissed him. So it's not that the board cannot be awakened in in a situation like this. I just find this to be an incoherent narrative and I've never seen such credulous analysis. I guess people who who who in the observer the media world and had had mickey mouse sheets on their bed when they were growing up or something. Because I don't think any other company would be getting the benefit of the doubt that Disney has gotten. Yeah I guess we'll see as this pandemic causes more injury to the company. How big a role. Eiger will ultimately play. That's delanie former editorial director of the Hollywood reporter. He joins me this Monday at one. Thirty on the
Will Disney World check temperatures at the gates? Bob Iger talks about how parks could adapt post-coronavirus.
"Making plans for after the pandemic may be looking to head to a theme park what happens when those attractions reopen after the pandemic subsides this is the first time that all of Disney's theme parks have been shut down at the same time and executive chairman Bob Eiger Eiger says says the the top top priority priority on on re re opening opening will will be be to to make make sure sure people people feel feel safe safe they they already already do do things things like like bag bag checks checks at at Disney Disney parks parks Snider Snider tells tells Barron's Barron's that that they may have to do temperature checks as people come through the gates Uyghur says people got used to a new way of traveling after nine eleven they'll likely have to do the same for the Disney parks and other attractions in a post pandemic world

another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former "From wondering. I'm David Brown. And this is business wars daily on this Monday march second big news last Tuesday Disney CEO. Bob Eiger stepped down from his post effective immediately. Yeah it had been rumored for years that the longtime well respected executive would retire sometime. But the announcement suddenness reportedly surprised employees and industry executives according to CNN. Especially since Agar's employment contract is up until the end of twenty twenty one it also shocked investors the announcement on a random Tuesday. One analyst said was stunning. The share price sank on the news even more sharply than the rest of the market which was already in freefall because of Corona virus fears items replacement BOB SHAPE ICK Twenty-seven Year Disney veteran. Who since two thousand fifteen has run? Disney parks and resorts division. He'll have Gargantuan shoes to fill. Bob Iger is known as a fearless risk taker. A guy who believes in the motto in by. He's been at Disney for forty five years. He took the reins for Michael Eisner. Fifteen years back then. Disney was turning a profit of two and a half billion dollars a year according to CNBC. Today it's more than ten billion not surprisingly share prices followed growing four hundred percent over Eiger fifteen years managing the house of mouse that soaring profitability is typically credited do bonus as chief executive. He made enormous bets. Acquiring Lucasfilm Pixar Marvel and last year completing a seventy billion dollar acquisition of Twentieth Century Fox. The result Disney films dominated the box office last year. Grossing more than ten billion dollars according to CNBC if that wasn't enough eiger led Disney into streaming TV sinking billions and creating Disney plus the twentieth century. Fox purchase helped fuel Disney plus by giving it a huge catalog of content. So too did I moved to take back. Disney shows that it had formerly licensed Netflix. Now it's fierce rival. The strategy seems to be working. Disney plus launched only three months ago in November. The company says it now has nearly thirty million subscribers. I group is also known as charismatic. Disney CEO Bob Iger Steps Aside; Bob Chapek Named New Head
"Let's move onto Disney some big news. Disney CEO BOB. Iger is stepping down as CEO but will remain executive chairman until twenty twenty one. Now Bob Chepe pack will take over. Chepe heck was the chairman of Disney parks experiences and products. He's been at Disney for a long time. Twenty seven years and we knew was going to step down. Yeah but still. This is a bit of a surprise in who the new CEO is. Yeah a lot of people thought you know be Bob. Eiger came out last year and he put something called the ride of a lifetime and he basically forecast that he was at the he was at the end of his time as CEO of Disney. The you know that he would be stepping down. It was not in the middle of the route of lifetime. This was kind of a a foreshadowing. The timing is really odd again. Given the corona virus and Disney Disney parks worldwide or about thirty percent of the revenue of the total profitability of the company. Like this is a big deal yet. A lot of people didn't realize you know the thought that the next leader from Would come maybe from Disney plus from the from the video side and they didn't they went and tapped a guy who's been at the benefit the parks. Yeah I happen to think. It's all a big conspiracy just to keep the Bob's in power feels like a snap. It feels like a snub to someone like Kevin Mayor. Who's been heading up Disney streaming service and Disney for so long has been saying streaming Disney placid future of Disney and to bring somebody in who has experienced running the parkside. The experience I've Disney is an interesting choice and the market doesn't seem to like it. But I I kind of do minus the Bob Bob thing strange but I think it's a good thing because as you said it's the parks in the experience that has been driving Disney throughout his entire history. And you don't want to put everything on streaming and ignore the extremely profitable important aspects. That is the Disney culture. That's created from experiences like parks the thing that's really interesting. And the Bob Eiger it. It's interesting to me that when Bob Eiger became the CEO. I don't know if you remember this but it was not a popular pick at all. It was not you know he was thought of as being the wrong guy coming from the wrong industry but what he has been. He's been a master capital alligator. Bought Pixar Lucasfilm's Fox Studios Marsa Marvel Marvel Tuck in acquisitions exactly exactly me transformational acquisitions. But people didn't realize you know people did not give him the credit in advance that that was what he was going to do. And I think one of the reasons that they went to the direction that they did is the thing that Bob Iger did that. People were surprised about is he really cracked the code on direct to consumer for Disney. Yeah and baby. Yoda and finally finally. We're going to see some BAYONA merchandise and other high not gonNA sell

Yes Oh if they can just stop Ramiro Kirby Chuan Card when it stopped EVAC two people trapped up to three hours up to the cars that that they could that the individuals in the cars could deploy of drinking water There there were a few like basic necessities uh will will I figure they could the Nopal the notebook is for window if you had to you know what I mean up bird and helped the burden falls there was a plastic bag in there too we just picked lasting it out the window to tell you I was a little leery and and try it now is everywhere and they have them everywhere where they can add cars as some origin the extra cars the cars are out of service or being fixed or whatever so it's the way they clean up on but they've you know they've done that for years and years and years as someone in the Disney realm and that was that there was a power failure for the mechanism to grasp the cable as so instead I don't know if I believe that or not I I don't know if I honestly I don't know if it's true it's it's off the line to load and V or wheelchair or another and where it just pass through the station on the overhead I it was a a car that was leading station that slid back down the wind exit because they they like the metal thing like clamps onto the cable on the top in the building like Indiana Jones style so because the thing they go on to a series of motorized wheels above late on the front portion of the station so once those cars moved through at for going around to the other side which at stations is where the cars will then load prior to departure Gotcha so the doppelmayr system is is decades this this this conversation with Damon I find it hard to believe or to Disney's over engineering of critical systems somewhere along the line that someone would have power outage in this issue would have happened and so I'm sure there are sensitive to the transportation thing and it's not easy to evacuate I mean in the monorail it's a lot a little cars to hit one by one if you can't get the thing moving still write it I'll still ride it interesting never had any I spend more time on the phones sure okay so I'm gonNA head over to Yup so it looks like our business Kurt logo there does this cut that you'll yeah or deco feel air okay so make just recently we had keystone clothiers and legends of Hollywood they reopened it it definitely captured it in my opinion the gene and it's also wear you're gonna find as Labor of the month color of the month Erin del Aqua or like like the emporium I would I would say for Magic's our but it looks Nice no extra fixture fixture everywhere you turn there I'm sure we will lawrence like he I now so okay enchanted rose switch I loved is now the enchanted Rose Lounge and it looks like they tape now and they've put in like pub tables but like nicer pub tables they do have they're going to be opened from one pm until midnight they have a multitude of things to have like a flat bread they have a cheese platter the crap in Nokia grime and they've got all their featured cocktails so that's okay right since they can still go and hang out it's so it's where Meissner's lounge the right if you're facing the band there was a men's clothing store fair Memorex ah it looks fabulous they did it in all like blues and go outside to yeah they had they never utilized that so that's probably a good to Eddie bear lady used to hang out in one of those Kinda lounge areas right up in their I'm all about so lounges above the truffle fries I can do some triple for is I could oh yeah those are so good Parmesan Oh yes I think I hope John yesterday we go out to dinner or Steve's birthday and we go to this local Italian place some friends we know and talk in that you know today's Steve's with this age plate of like Italian he was so stuffed and then he just kept shovel newman his mouth while there's so many I felt take a look like some of them were eaten because otherwise there are so many that looks like I didn't over fifty years to figure this out and now I'm excited fifty years powder sugar turns into the nothing like a glaze so yes it just isn't the clearly hollow in the middle or are they kind of media through and through doughy and I hate to speculate here I believe that have been yea is a yeast pastry so donut eerie but they're not like the heavier not empty pizza roll yeah so yeah this Oh that that kind of webby right Oh so these are more like Italian Benes Agus Italian don't deal with the stuff we could okay so we do have some Disney promotions that came out Help me if I mess this up The secret Walt Disney Company Project premiering at D23
"To the schedule for twenty three on saturday august twenty four from one thirty two thirty p._m. Disney will be discussing facing a secret walt disney company project. We don't know what it means but the the other interesting fact is that this secret project i will not be discussed at disney plus panel the walt disney studios panel the disney parks experienced panel or the product presentations its own presentation presentation standalone. So what are we thinking. Oh you have theory i do but it's more of a hopeful theory. I i don't think i doubt it will come true. They've acquired the ability to have marvel in the florida park. That was all part of the agreement when they bought marvel so i highly highly doubt that's it. I highly doubt that i don't know i mean it's a secret. Projects have another theory too that i've been reading about. There's a fifth park on the way they have the land. We would do think they would call that the life and times of bob disney. Oh my god oh the ramps camille chairs wheelchairs for all must be in a wheelchair park. Does bob disney ever switch to like a scooter.

"Two. A new Disney park is opening up, what you need to know about getting in is coming up after. All right. Well, it's pretty much. The Schuylkill expressway, you've got delays imposed directions. Westbound you're heavy right around university. Then again, you're heavy approaching the contract curve, eastbound seventy six jammed from the boulevard all the way down to the vine street expressway, the vine street expressway westbound, that's low from broad street out to the Ben Franklin Parkway. Ninety five southbound, we've got delays in Delaware County. You're heavy just south of the blue route. Now, southbound on the bluer you really heavy trying to get on ninety five south. That's a lot of volume. Some people trying to head down the shore in northeast Philly Welsh road and Manchester avenue. You've got an apartment fire fire department on the scene cleaning that up. We've got MLK drive close for recreational use Kelly drive. You're being detoured from green to strawberry mansion. That's for the dragon boat festival in Montgomery County just north of Horsham you've got traffic heavy on Horsham road, just east of Limekiln pike in lower and traffic. A mess on northbound city avenue approaching monument road. That's due to an accident area bridges. You've got some slow traffic on the Ben Franklin bridge heading into. New Jersey two lanes getting by due to construction. Burlington bristles cleared out nicely from an earlier bridge. Opening we get into New Jersey, our major roadways not too bad. If you own fifty five we're not seeing any major problems to ninety five looks good one thirty through cinnaminson looks good. If you're all mass transit, no major delays. "Of this in grade fever not necessarily enough for to really get here sick at a disney park or stuff around nick and spit there was a conspiracy theories around phones taping you when you're and then sending you ads which they proved today not so but people persist i think that's actually just crazy people but that could be conspiracy amplified and yeah sex these businesses those like this look i'd like to dang facebook and google all day long but not for things they don't do i agree do you know what i mean like let's focus on the shooting things they do for shitty things they don't do but i think that is sort of the situation that we're in as what's true what's not true it's really difficult to tell and you made a point earlier that it was really good one of the largest things that we've seen over the past couple years is trust in institutions have plummeted i mean study after study shows that the two places where trusted institutions have sunk the most is number one media number two corporation so what's true and what's not that's really difficult to discern in this media environment and what does the impact of trump behaving this way have on it i mean it's probably not helping and the other thing is not helping people are using these political issues as vehicles to hit corporation right because what they look at is all right let's look at the culture let's look at corporations what can we tie together that will get people spun up and in this political environment yeah politically that's a really good and then using these tools these technology tools that did you see any upcoming ones that are going to be dangerous the are suddenly yeah i mean i'll tell you what i'm probably the most nervous about is this issue with deep fakes so what happens if thank so that's when you and i'm sure your listeners we're going to hear my explanation and be like manyika like fifteen percent of that but okay i'll do my best but so that's an example where you can take any individual and you get enough video you get enough audio you get enough visual and so then all the sudden i can show us ceo i'll do a pg version of fake but a ceo i can make a look like a co went and robbed a bank and that video can look extremely genuine to make it i you start amplifying that all of the sudden you get stories about us co robbing a bank now let's take that a step further what if it's a foreign leader that you have chilean video saying that they're going to do something to the united states what happens if it's you know you can sort of go down the hall tissues and everything else so you've come back on the set of homeland but go ahead yeah there you go maybe i should just you know take homeland it has a lot of things either that there's actually a movie watch called minority report that has a lot of ideas a lot of this stuff in you know i try to avoid tom cruise suzy's but nonetheless this one is full of ideas like that conceptual ideas all right so so if you're corporation you need to be paying attention to this you need to understand and if you're a user what just turn off twitter or what no look i think twitter facebook all these platforms serve a really great purpose in terms of getting news and information but as you're digesting that news and information you just need to be aware you need to be extra vigilant what's real what's not do research make sure you're reading from trusted publications you know everyone's got that crazy uncle that likes to throw out the world is crazy you know let me just let me just end by saying we we looked at my name and apparently i don't have many botts but lots of people are pissed at me so cares fisher is just being attacked by regular people heroes very clean on the botts regular people might be a little bit yes so i create.

"A testing it's enter grow into our development process so that the result is a product that's not only feature rich but everybody can actually utilize those features in it's not overly complex it's this obsession with the most new wants details and function and design that elevates bows products into a whole new level of quality and one example of this is the way bose's improving our interactions with our voiceactivated virtual personal assistance hear what bose's up to in a special mini episode at the end of the show and find out more about the brand new quiet comfort 35 series to headphones at boast dot com slash twenty k bows get closer the amount of thought and cheer gets into the sound design of an attraction is incredible but ironically a lot of the magic actually comes from what you dumped here vidi sounds cannot be masked things like hydraulic pumps the snapping of actuators and show what you try to do his work with them in the case of tariff tear we had a situation where when the guest dropped in the vehicle they would scream and it was coming through the sound barrier gone so we went in and we found out after some study that everybody screamed in the very same place when recorded guest doing that than our sound designers got together and started creating the sanski utilizing those screams at that particular place in the track in you couldn't tell that the people were screaming right behind your back you did the same kind of thing where you have hydraulic pump noise or air noise or actuator noise if you possibly can you try to mask it but if you can't mask it you try to find things that you can do in the soundtrack utilizes sounds to our advantage another thing the use to their advantage as access to popular disney movies and their characters when we start a new attraction that's based on a film we look at what the creative needs are the project and look at how the film music can't apply in most cases we always.

"In creating an entertainment show with lifelike characters the physical restraints of technology is another challenge often are animatronic sire singing dancing and we have to be aware tempo of we have a song that's moving at a pretty quick clip we might have a figure that doesn't quaint move that fast figures are built to very tight specification of operations so that they can last a long time so if nyerere bpm is very high we might have to create an arrangement that has a perceived lower tempo for that specific character that deals with any kind of technology a lot of the things just physically will not move as fast as we would lacked for them to move making an attraction sound realistic is tough but in some cases masking unwanted sounds like hydraulic pumps or the snapping of actuators can be even trickier theme park rides create a lot of noise just to be able to operate so how do they mitigate that also what are the nuances of taking a film and turning it into a physical experience all this and more after the break you can tell that a lot of research and design went into the bows quiet comfort line of headphones from the first moment you put them on the noise canceling technology the quality of the headphones sound and the comfort of wearing them for long stretches of time rodrigo gums a product manager of bos puts a best it all comes back to our drive to make our products very easy to use for everyone we want to make sure that everyone has a good experience not just the more technically savvy folks we do a ton of research a tie.

"As a listener on the other me and can't pick out anything you don't know who's talk and you don't know what's being said but the minute you do that with multiple channels like stereo then your own brain can get engaged in picking these things out in making the difference in deciding what it wants to listen to the same thing happens in an attraction if i'm in a scene and i've pulled the sound around in a number of different channels my brain can decide to pick out things it wants to focus on just like it does in nature you have what you might call the ticky bird affect the but wiggins the term tiki burt affect refers to the enchanted tiki room attraction created for disneyland in 1963 when you go into the ticky roman your play dozens and dozens of birds on discreet channels either learn the flowers anything the you hear that one over there and you hear this one over here you decide to focus on this winter that one in the clarity and the dimension really come way up and so we use that technique as much as possible in our attractions the more speakers the more reality that you can get in a particular area creating and maintaining realism is crucial and some attractions pose a greater challenge than others let's take a character and attraction like in the old bear jamboree now the involved welcome to the one and only original contraband jamboree if the bear is going to sing you want the sound to come from the bear and there's a lot of problems associated with that because there may not be a place to put a speaker that's gonna play the sound pressure level back at a level that is believable for the bear to play and be the size that he is.

"In addition to a captivating music track how the music plays and it specifically coming from is a unique challenge for every attraction first thing you need to do to make sure the music works from seemed to seeing is look at the reality of the environmental space you're working within you can't ignore acoustics in canada nor the spatial relationships of the different scenes look at small world for instance it's a small world was originally created for the nineteen 64 new york world's fair it has been an iconic disney attraction ever since it's essentially one big open building it does have walls between scenes but there's a lot going on in each seen there's a lot of different arrangements within each seen but they're all playing the same song so we take a baseliner track that is the primary arrangement and that place through most developing but then you have all these other unique arrangements for each ethnic music style but there are also playing the same song it's really in the arrangement orchestration that you can make an attraction like that work because there is no separation between the scenes and you can get a lot of nice your candy as you float through all the different than yet you here ethnic versions of the song and it becomes a very playful and fun sort of audio experience for more complex attractions simply choosing the right sized speakers and getting them in the right place becomes kind of an art form in and of itself you have to understand the physics of nature the physics of sound and why things were the way that they or and you use those things to your advantage if you go into a scene and all of the music in all of the dialogue and all of the effects are playing from water to speakers there's a level of fake news that comes out of that and you immediately pick it up on a subconscious level in your brain says this isn't real the minute you take that and break that out into a number of speakers and play it back and more realistic way it's a lot more interesting to the brain your brain now can do some work it can began to pick these things apart for example if i'm in a conference room and there are ten.

"That created this very rich very real fantasy place while getting the music and background ambiance just right for a specific park zone is vital designing would have guessed here's as their travelling between park zones can be just as important as you go from land land in attraction to attraction you pass through decompression zones transition zones buffer zones those transitions till you okay it you can relax here in decompression you're not going to miss anything they haines you from one story to the next story without letting the two stories intrude on each other and that's what makes it the magical place because once you get into our store you never leave it until you walk out the door the story always comes first with theme parks ounce gaping and proper music selection and arrangement of that music is key to maintaining the fantasy experience i'm mike for kasey music production supervisor for the walt disney imagineering music studio only first learned of a new ride experience we always start with story what is our creative intent what is the guest experienced cling to feel like what's our adventure were going on and from there we start to put together just some music style guide ideas of it's a roller coaster that's probably gonna be a faster paste feeling civil pull music style guide ideas whether p songs or score material from anything just to get a flavour of what we think it's gonna feel like and then we work with the rest of the team throughout the process to allow the music selection to evolve.
