"discover magazine" Discussed on Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

"It's merriam Webster's word of the day for April 28th. Today's word is arboreal spelled AR Bo R EL, arboreal is an adjective. It's a literary term that means of or relating to trees. It can also mean living in or often found in trees, as in arboreal monkeys. Here's the word used in a sentence from discover magazine by Holly Barker. The satanic leaf tailed geckos mottled brown skin replete with mossy splotches and vain like ridges, makes it the perfect imitation of a decaying leaf. Any predator clever enough to see through its arboreal disguise and mount an attack will be in for a fright. The leafy gecko opens its mouth, sticking out a blood red tongue and unleashing a chilling scream that will frighten off the boldest of predators. The word arboreal took root in English in the 17th century, at a time when language influencers were eager to see English take on words from Latin and Greek. Apparently unsatisfied with the now obsolete tree, meaning of relating to or derived from trees, they plucked arboreal from the Latin word arboreus, meaning of a tree. Its ultimate root is arbor, meaning tree. That root arbori that is branched freely to use the term figuratively. English abounds with largely obscure words that trace back to arbor, meaning tree. Generally synonymous with arboreal are the words arborio, arbitrary, arboreus, and arborists. Synonymous with arboreal specifically in the sense of relating to or resembling a tree are the words arborescent, are borough and arbora form. Arbora coal is a synonym of arboreal in its inhabiting trees since. The influencers may have overdone it a bit. Arboreal is far more common than any of these, but other arbor words also have a firm hold in the language. Our gravity refers to a shrub whose name translates as tree of life. Arboretum refers to a place where trees are cultivated, and arboriculture is the cultivation of trees, and of course we can't forget arbor day, which, since 1872, has named a day set aside for planting trees. Despite its spelling, however, the English word arbor, which refers to a garden shelter of trees, boughs, or vines, twine together, has a different source. It came by way of the Anglo French word from the Latin era, meaning herb or grass. With your word of the day on Peter sokolovsky. "How I mean, I know, you know, this makes me want to cry actually even talking about it because I live at firsthand, but as I started to dig into the brain injury and recovering from the brain injury and boy, they don't tell you anything. When your son has a traumatic brain injury, they don't give you any information. There's really not much out there on it. And then I start to dig into the research of how many people have traumatic brain injuries are suffering with one at any given time, the things between depression and suicide that you just never even hear about. And I think of my other son who did a backflip into the side of the pool and we took him to the emergency room and they're like, oh, no, he's fine. He'll have a little bump on like, he got knocked out, jumping into the side of the doing a dive into the side of the pool. You know, you just think about how many times who goes through childhood and doesn't hit their head. Or life. A lot of people hit their head, but it doesn't leave a lasting impression for this people I see. If you go, hey, what's the biggest lesson you learned? Is mild traumatic brain injury ruins people's lives. And not everybody who has a brain injury does it have a negative impact. It sort of depends on the brain, they brought into the accident. But there are 3 million new concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries every year in the United States, which means over the last 30 years. There's been 90 million concussions. There's a lot of people walking around with the lasting effects of concussions, but they get misdiagnosed as anxiety disorders or as ADHD or depression. And if you don't get the right diagnosis, you can't properly treat it because so say I published two huge studies showing I could separate traumatic brain injury from PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder. So emotional trauma from physical trauma. And discover magazine listed our research as one of the top 100 stories in science. Yeah, it was pretty cool. But so why is that important? Well, if you have a emotional trauma, you have a busy brain. Your emotional circuits start becoming hyperactive because if you've been emotionally traumatized, your brain goes, oh, you have to watch. Someone's going to hurt you. But if you have physical trauma, you have decreases in those circuits. And so one is low. One is high. What's really important to know because the treatment for one is calm down the brain, the treatment for the other is stimulate the brain. And so you can imagine, and actually Tana writes about this in her book, the relentless courage of a scared child where she got depressed after she had thyroid cancer, doctor put her on prozac, SSRIs like prozac, calm down, brain activity, but her brain was sleepy to start as she had no thyroid and she'd had a traumatic brain injury from a rollover accident. And so if you don't know, you could hurt people. And that's the point of why you should look. You know, I often say a picture is worth a thousand words. But a map is worth a thousand pictures, a map tells you where you are, and that's why we did grant a number of times. It's like, okay, where we are in the map. A map tells you where you are and then gives you direction on how to get to where you want to go. The scans also taught me marijuana is not a health thing. And I get so much grief from this. But you're just not a fun guy, man. You take away the alcohol, you take away pot. Come on, Daniel. I guess having a great brains more fun than that is the takeaway. Yes. And I often say who has more fun. And with a good brain or the kid with the bad brain, I saw one of my celebrities a couple of days ago. And I'm like, so I just stopped using drugs. He's like, it just was too much work. Just wasn't worth. The pain of it. So why is that fun? Especially now we know that smoking marijuana is actually worse than smoking cigarettes. And using marijuana increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, not to mention, if you do it as a teenager, increases your risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide. So who's really having more fun? The kid with the good brain or the kid with the bad brain, because you know, as you and I think about it, and I talk about this and change your brain every day, because mindsets so important. It's what do you really want? So if I ask you that question, what do you really want in your soul? And I know I want energy. And memory and happiness and connection. And quite frankly, alcohol doesn't get me any of those. Marijuana doesn't get me any of those. But when I eat right, I have those. And when I think right I have what I want. So so many people are run by the four year old inside their bodies that I want what I want when I want it. Reminds me of the eagles song. Do you ever remember the eagle song get over it? I love it. They get for me. Victim of this victim of that and there's a line in there that gets me into trouble whenever I said, but it's like I want to find your inner child and kick its little ass. It's just terrible. I have an Olympic pole vaulter. I treat. She uses this as her song because it's like, come on, let's get over it. Let's act like adults. Let's do the things that we know. That bring us happiness and joy. Us women need to prioritize protein as we age, and the truth is, most of us aren't getting what we need to support our muscles and bones, our immune system, our energy levels, our metabolism, and our waistlines. "From animals of carbon and hydrogen oxygen. Have you start with matter? Even brain matter, you know, mushy, but it's still made up of the elements. So how do you start with Carbon and hydrogen and oxygen, each of which was dumb as gravel. They picked up element. You know Adam's of stuff for just like they're dumb. How do you start from that? I'm okay. Electricity is moving through it. Electricity is just the motion of electrons, nothing more than that, so they have electrons moving through Adam's Now how you get the smell of new cut grass. The experience of that. How do you go from that to that guy who always wins the hot dog eating contest? You know, Coney Island? How do you make that leap from? Dumb carbon and hydrogen to experiencing music, experiencing love experiencing colors. And Nobody has the first step a man how consciousness cannot rise. It's a little different from life arising, which is also mystery, of course, but consciousness arising awareness Being alive, the feeling of being alive. Is the deepest mystery in all of science. Paul Hoffman. They used to be my boss. That Discover magazine and then became publisher of the Encyclopedia Britannica, I mention really is to show you that this is no dummy. And he would like to say that it's the biggest mystery. The most nagging question in all of science. How How does consciousness we're all conscious. How does this first arise? No. The Hindus say that that arises in the fetus in the third month of pregnancy, But how did they know each other? They.

Despite La Nia, 2020 could be hottest year on record

"Just how far out of balance is earth's climate system when the numbers are in two thousand twenty is likely the first or second warmest year on record globally and that makes the past seven years the seven warmest years on record. It's an unprecedented run of warmth. In the global surface temperature record dating back to eighteen. Eighty penn state university professor. Michael man has spent a career tracking climate trans. Hi michael welcome back to climate cast. Thanks it's good to be with you. Paul let's start with twenty twenty. Where does it look like. Global temperatures will finish. There's a good chance that twenty twenty will be the warmest year on record. That's particularly surprising given. It's a la nina year. We have a la- nina event. The tropical pacific that tends to cool global temperatures a bit michael in a balanced climate system. We would expect a mix of warmer and colder than average years. How far out of balance is earth's climate system to have the past seven years be the warmest on record. Yeah well it's way out of balance and in fact a few years ago we estimated the likelihood that we would see these sort of streaks from chance alone in the absence of human caused warming and that probability is tiny one in ten thousand In one of our estimates as one article an article in discover magazine summarizing findings stated that the chances are a snowball's chance in hell basically is how likely we would see that from natural factors alone so when we include the human factor of increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the models that we are able to reproduce these stretches of record warm temperatures that we're seeing we saw what you might call one benefit from the pandemic this year it looks like global greenhouse gas emissions are down about seven percent but i noticed the atmospheric. Co two levels aren't budging michael. What does that tell us about how much we need to lower emissions to get an atmospheric response in co two levels. Yeah it's sort of like a bathtub and you know if we turn the faucet down but it still on and the drain is closed. The water level won't stop rising until we turn the knob all the way off and that's essentially what we have to do. When it comes to the climate crisis we need to turn down that knob in reach what we call net zero no net carbon emissions into the atmosphere within a few decades and we need to bring carbon emissions down by roughly factor of to within the next decade if were to stay on that path where we keep warming below truly catastrophic levels more than a degree in half celsius or roughly three degrees
