Why Strategic Planning Is Important For Small Business
"So yeah topic today. Title Net flicks worst nightmare. What's the worst nightmare eh? We've talked about this a lot but maybe we haven't talked about it on air. I don't think specifically so obviously when we were putting the information together You know we talked to one F lakes and article in Forbes magazine by Stephen McBride and one of the things that says which will then pull from today is that the net flicks in the last decade. Their stock has risen to about eighty. Five hundred percent has risen by eighty-five hundred percent. That's not because streaming ozzy caught fire. I mean streaming is like first of all the word streaming was invented. Because of what Netflix does I know like no one used the word really like streaming in relation to viewing things until Netflix really came along and now it's like streaming as his own category which is impressive. Whenever you can create its things Hastings Reed Hastings Ya Hastings company that like the smart brands words words right Amex? Yeah exactly. It's like netflixing. Chill not exactly that one. Maybe actually. That's he can miss his better thing. Big You're like old married couples. That's what they say will take Shade Mahar in the tender tender account. I don't F- looks to me Netflix. And Chill and has put Netflix ongoing asleep so because the different indices sold as me. That's the that's what I do. They netflixing watch Netflix. Watch me so anyway. So net flicks achieved those gains. How do they do it? They literally disrupted video rental the whole industry. They stole millions of customers. Oh no not even just a video rental like they they were beyond that streaming actually took away customers from the large cable companies. Millions of cable companies loss customers at the hands of readings Netflix. God I'd love to be able to drop Kale. I know I have a way to watch sports without having in cable. 'cause that's literally. The only thing tying cable Youtube Youtube Youtube. TV Okay Forty nine ninety nine a month all regions force not end more mass. Let's check that. I have it now but accidents because I still have direct TV. Once they cancelled DIRECTTV next year. I'm GONNA switch completely over to Youtube. TV sweet actually be free. Leave so so Netflix. Still literally tens of millions of customers from cable companies because so much content yet you know I can literally don't I can't even tell you what channels are what on cable. All I know is that you'd have to hit five hundred to get into like your hd but after that. Ah I'm just hitting like the page until I fall. Oh there we go. That's what I WANNA watch. I can't tell you anything but you WANNA know what's on Netflix. I know all you know what I mean like. I'm always always watching documentaries. And movies and everything so yeah I completely feel that way. It's funny because articles here says says that Last year half of Americans a twenty to forty five didn't even watch a second of cable TV. That's crazy isn't nuts. Wow that's true disruption. But here's the problem. oftentimes when there's a a good idea invented where comes out disrupts the whole marketplace replace what happens competition. Man are the big boys get into the they see going on they get they own honestly that Pie. So that's what's happening right now. Man Disney plus who you name it right there all stripping away so my net flicks is Grip tight grip on this on the street. And there's more coming. Yeah like because all licenses that netflix expiring or not renewing because those major are those major television and film houses are taking the licenses back in creating their own streaming service. You know that's crazy. Yep so the point of this. Is that Netflix. Says worst nightmare would be that what they did the cable. Obviously it's going to happen to them. Yeah we'll be done to them. Do you think that people would cancel their netflix memberships. Though like cable 'cause I see it as a way where people just reduce their netflix subscription. More so than. Cancel it because Netflix still has like so much offer. Yeah that's a good question so we extrap- extrapolating out. I'm looking at it that we would have to reduce it because they still put out some good stuff. They have netflix originals. That some some of them are actually really good now some of the NFL. So I think it's just what I've talked to house of cards. Yeah this is why I've talked about affair with you that I still feel the same as that A little bit off topic but I think me personally for the end consumer. It's a disservice to them. Because you know in a world where everybody is like I you said I'd love to get off the cable. Save some money when you really start to do the math. It's like I think. NBC's starting to get their own thing. Soon we're just reading in in this article. Eighteen tease looking to start their own already. Disney plus we already know Hulu and some of these other ones when you break down all the different subscriptions that you're paying for. It's like Mike expresses went up not down exactly. So how much is Netflix is. Net flicks is fifteen. ninety-nine that's how much I pay and then Disney pluses twelve ninety nine. It's all ready twenty nine dollars here and then Hulu Hulu Netflix and ESPN. But then like let's say you get get what's the other one Like NBC. What if they come on you know what I mean because they have the office and they have friends? It's in frazier and I think those are like the top things that are watched on Netflix. And I love Frazier Frazier okay. Oh don't forget the apple apple plus came out to Oh did it yes apple pluses apples streaming service. And that's like four ninety nine one hundred dollars for cable or three hundred for seriously seriously. But you know what's GonNa Happen is that it's just going to be things that people watching cancel. There's going to be this. Subscription does monthly subscription service. This is going to turn into people turning on and turning off being hop skip like I just already heard of people doing that with the mandatory now that it stopped just cancel their Disney subscription. And they'll come back and they'll come. I'm back and so what happens. Disney just lose revenue because people are leaving and coming back. That's not the kind of when you have a scripture over. She won't be able to be subscribed for life like you don't want cycles of three month customers and then come back this and that it's just like you know you know. They really is a paid. But the reason why we bring this up in the entrepreneur. Life is because as is entrepreneurs. This is going to happen. Competitions part of business is you know especially even if you have something that disrupts the market as much much is a net flicks people come in Nelson and got this really great idea. No one else is doing it. There's no competition and they could be right there. There may not be any competition. But you can't assume that it will always be that way if it's that good of an idea and you have a hold on the market share. Some point people are going to be like wait a minute. They're gonNA wake up and be like oh we gotta do. Is You know you look at Netflix. Netflix is paying Disney And NBC and some of these other companies. A little bit to be able to have those shows on Netflix. So now they're looking like dead. Their stocks rose eighty five hundred eighty five hundred percent percent eight thousand five hundred percent yet whether I want some of that. Yup Well I guess the other thing too is I the reason why we put with is in. There is because it's like like you said like this is going to happen as a small business owner and I don't think I think the wrong I think to wrong reactions to to competition so I'll I'll start off with my own example. Is that when I moved to the city block them on in open a facility disability down there in downtown Boston five years ago when I first open I had four competitors today I have twelve. Which kind of tells you the state of number one the industry that a man number two tells you that there's no market research done uh-huh in some areas but then the other thing too is like it tells you that you know like there's going to be competition and you know you're competing for the same dollar if you think you're competing for the same dollar? You're you're mistaken you're competing for fifty cents and you had to. You GotTa just be careful if you want to compete for the whole dollar then you have to outperform everybody to get that dollar like significantly. You don't have to be a one stop shop but your value has to be tremendously high. You create value. We've talked about it a million a million times and we had a podcast the segment about creating value. How to do so? Go back and listen to that. I think is episode thirty three. Yeah and that's what they're going to have to do here. So what right. So that's the thing is like okay so that so so I was just giving you. The example of how market competition using my example can come into play. And I'm sure for you. I mean I I went went from four to twelve inches my block but for you. I'm sure even bigger than that. You're you're industry. Because you have comp- you have to deal with both companies and individuals
Discussing HBO Max, a New Streaming Platform
"John Horn over the next couple of months dreaming giants like Net flicks are GonNa have some pretty big competition besides Disney plus perhaps the most formidable newcomer is Hbo Max is set to launch next May and unlike the sparse offerings unveiled so far by apple for its new streaming service. Hbo Max just announced some very ambitious plans for what it has in store Dan Holloway is executive editor for TV at variety Dan Welcome to the frame thanks to be oh Hbo Max just made a big announcement of catalog content news shows what's the overall takeaway on their ambitions for their new stadium a platform I think the overall takeaway John is that it is big it has a lot of content to offer they are projecting gene more than fifty original series to debut on the service in its first year that's in addition to a lot of library content and it's a lot of different kinds of bray content from Sesame Street to friends of South Park to the Big Bang theory to every Batman and Superman movie ever made it's a vast library a big offering but it also has a high price point for the consumer are these series that will only be available on HP does new streaming service might they be available on the pay channel itself what's the overlap and how many of these things are unique to streaming you're touching on a broad the point of confusion I think that is out there right now about Hbo Max and its relationship to existing Hbo Customers Zeroing in on these original programs they will just be available to watch HBO Max They Will Not Be available to watch we're told on. HBO IS LINEAR Channel But if you you are HBO subscriber you will presumably have access to Hbo Max so you will still be able to access these shows just outgrew HBO on Television Yeah but not all HBO subscribers are alike I wasn't very recently a direct TV bribers that's where I got HBO now I've switched over to charter cable because DIRECTTV is part of the time water empire does that mean I'm GonNa have to pay for this when it launches in May you as a charter cable subscriber should be fine but HBO does not have all of its deals done with all of its billions we're not entirely sure which affiliates deals aren't done yet but there's a lot of question particularly for people who are subscribing to hbo ru other direct to consumer services outside of the Cable Universe so let's say for instance that you subscribe to Hbo now through Amazon Channels Ages Amazon's direct to consumer TV channel offering it is unclear whether you will have access to to Hbo Max Hbo has to go through in all of their affiliates and distribution partners like Amazon like Hulu and every single cable provider they have to go through and hammer out those deals with all those affiliates with all distributors to make sure that you will have access to it they are saying that they are optimistic that those deals will get done by hey but being optimistic about it is not the same thing as the inconven- dry on those contracts we're talking with Dan Holloway the executive editor for TV at variety the HBO Max is not going to be cheap it's going to be triple the price of apples news streaming service what is the play here in terms of how much it's GonNa cost and how much of that money is going to go to pain for all of this new content they're basically married to their fourteen ninety nine a month price tag because that's basically what taper HBO so they can go around offering something that includes Hbo for less than what consumers are paying through their cable provider there's it would violate their distribution contracts and that's going to be a high barrier to entry for a lot of consumers especially when you got Disney plus was a similarly large content offering lead entering the market in November at six hundred ninety nine per month as far as where that money is going. At and T. is not expecting this thing revenue for five years and they are expecting the by two thousand twenty five they'll be turning around billion dollars per year and that estimate of that's revenue is really based on one projections of adding sixteen million subscribers and two revenue that would come from an ad supported version of this that there are no specific plans for yet and that they are saying we'll be rolled out in two thousand twenty one according to some of the announcements Hbo Max could be making as many as fifty new shows in a couple of years and that's obviously a lot more than they're making for their cable channel is a fundamental pivot that suggests maybe that cable and satellite TV is no longer something that's going to grow and that the future really is in streaming and that is basically a foregone conclusion at this point John Sankey talked about how he believes we are now at Keith scripted television development across the industry this is not a new idea John Landgraf at Fx who runs that network has been talking about this for years problem with predictions of peaked engine is that the amount of television being made continues increase but stinky said he believes that we're at the peak right now and we will start to see the curve upward in terms of number hours of scripted programming being developed begin to flat now as the Cable Universe contracts and I think that if you look at the number of people who are subscribing to the traditional cable bundle it continues to decrease no one is expecting that to level off anytime soon no one is expecting that's a reverse force anytime soon these companies like Disney like Warner who for the last twenty twenty five years have been Driven primarily more much more so than buy movies or any other form of media by making money in the traditional pay TV ecosystem are now pivoting toward direct to consumer and that's essentially what this represents

Does Trump have a clue about these tariffs?
"To investor's edge. I'm Gary kaltbaum your host, thanks for being with us today. Glad you're here. Ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It's Thursday September sixth two thousand eighteen and we hit to talk about everything that affects everything and you the economy the markets your money. At all points in between. We will do the markets in depth. We will do the economy. We will do. DC Trump land, and you know, whatever else comes to mind. Hope you having a good day. But the most important part of the day. A couple of things come to mind. Number one football season starts tonight. And I know you people that are mad at the NFL. I get it. I dropped my directtv. Game plan thing. But I'll still watch games. I'm okay with that. Even though Goodell should be gone, but that doesn't happen. But something else happened today. Ladies and gentlemen. Burt Reynolds passed away. Now, a lot of people that are not of a certain age may not know him. But this man was these sex symbol the seventies. And eighties. And if you have a chance go watch the movie smoking in the band. You will laugh your tail off. Seriously. Seriously. And he was also a seminal. He passed away at the age eighty two I guess he's had health problems for while. But he had a heart attack and he passed away. Staying along the lines of DC. Trump lands. Nothing new today, except that guy or gal who did the op-ed is still out there. I thought they would probably be outed by now or they would come forward. Let's see what happens tomorrow. You know what I said yesterday? For me. It's not unexpected. There's good Trump Trump and the op-ed actually compliment that Trump on a bunch of things. But also went after a my only have one thought about this person. What what? What why in hiding? Why in hiding? And let's finish it off. You ever been on a treadmill? You ever walked on a treadmill run on a treadmill dragged on a treadmill? Guess what happens on a treadmill? You don't go anywhere. We're not talking about the weight part. But you just don't go anywhere. It's not like you go outside your house in your run for a while you end up in another place on a treadmill? You go anywhere. That was three days of nonsense with this. The next supreme court Justice. And we can go back and forth. But I gotta tell you I'm bored by it. I kept it on one of my TV's in the office. And I listen I was like who. What? What? Treadmill? So nothing came of that. Now today. I want you to listen carefully. Some of the best work. We do for you guys and gals on this show. Is what to avoid? How many times throughout the years? Have we told you to avoid this area that area? Our most famous ones. When go back to o-7. Oh, eight on the financials. When it was evident novice that they were under performing the market and something was up. We had no idea some of these things would go to zero but they were showing themselves for a while. We haven't missed bear markets for you guys. We've kept you out of the way of all bear markets lately. Over a long while we've been telling you to avoid the emerging markets other countries, the US is the best but also a bunch of other areas, and what's interesting for me. Any time the market drops for a couple of days. The worst areas. Get even worse. And that's because we have such a split tape. So the first part of market talked today with you guys. Is to continue to tell you what to continue to avoid. But I've got a few little editions. Today. That you will lead to know about. Night believe tomorrow's fake jobs number. I have no idea what the number will be. I have no idea how the market will react. Something new happens at the close of the market today. Trump started to mention Japan. All of a sudden, he doesn't like them. Now. And he wants to get into a tiff with them on tariffs. That's the bad Trump. I have news fear. I don't think he knows what the hell. He's

"The malaya directtv nfl football package i told them why end the ladies lipton said i'm not the first than factor has been many people calling up dropping they're not getting another dime from me you know you can talk all you want about trump and was a truck trump's at fault for calling the mess obese but i i am not going to give my money twoway business that spends a man three games for beating the crap out of his wife sense listen unconscious suspense another guy for four games but the fleeting of football maybe tells a team they cannot honour lame police officers or they will be fined tells another man they cannot honor the dead at not from nine eleven where they will be fine but let's pistol all over the national anthem and our flag or go to that yes they did and they did it on purpose and they did it with four thoughts and the nfl nothing set nothing as a business and i got an sphere these football players can do whatever the hell they wanna do freedom baby as long as they are in with a row within the rule of law they can do whatever the hell they wanna do and frankly i couldn't care less i really can't i can vehemently disagree but they have their right and if i believe in my right thigh half the believe there's but as a consumer i also get to make decisions you know you have your favorite restaurant or you don't need another bright right that the whole dissipation on kmart while i would never go there ever again i basically told the nfl that there asks backwards in their thinking and the need to get their act together or else now i gather they will be seeing a lot more of this from ordinary spectators consumers of their business which is supposed to be a football game and they've turned it into something else and there are inconsistencies annoy me so they have lost me and again i'm not first by won't be the last and hopefully they'll learn some lessons from it yeah now all right so let's see i did my football i did my trump let me finish one more thing college basketball i'm sure you've been reading about the arrest felony arrests.

"You know at this as same thing with directtv tv and dish and all of us why they have to turn that dish to get their satellites is you they have to get an optimal signal just like we would do with our ultrahigh frequency let's just say h a just him mesh or whatever you know we're doing with that technology you know you wanna locking of a maximum signal just like the old days when you yeah no yagi tv antenna you turn it toward you know this station and you'd turn it toward the other station i had a brother five years older than me and he would wale on may fighting go out and turning antenna so he could watch a team he wanted to watch on sunday afternoon a learn that lesson very early ally europe but it's the same principle we use it every day when we have any kind of directional antenna we just have a you know a bigger phenomenon if you will two two now we are also taking the other direction and going into the earth with groundpenetrating reidar archaeologists or finding really cool stuff because those people that wanted to find minerals and oil pioneered that and paidfor so we're not benefiting from the ground penetrating radar but the point is the more birds the more stable aid the more accurate signal you get to start with and then the more stable signal that you have over time so you want to get enough of those uh gps satellite signals to hit your antenna so your gps the o will not have as much jitter you're a day of will be smaller over time that is um the relative era in that signal you wanna feed your test equipment will be about the same but you do want it to be as tight around you know that frequency as possible but let's face it how tall are you.

"Eighty way in particular one of our nation's biggest lobbyists yeah true fact so at t owns directtv your feelings on whether or not it's appropriate to have an tv network bottle whatever leave that aside think it's probably fine who knows uh put a message up on direct tv boxes saying hey check at check out the the thing we supported an open internet and then you go to the website they recommend to you and on the website cycles through a bunch of different like suggested things you could email to congress or to the fcc that um you know in some cases are like completely dissembling and in some cases are like bald faced in what they're purporting to get you to support all of which is kind of antithetical to what literally every other company participating in the day of action watts yeah so for example paul we were talking a tender earlier in tenor puts at the screen said we support the internet do a thing swipe right on the internet and then what they're trying to do is send a letter to your congress for sure the fcc saying we support title to net neutrality and would eighteen t did was they literally put of a message on every directive tv box and you've got through it and they got you to send a letter in the text the letter was like we agree with the fcc that these dumb rules are stupid it's like that is the opposite of the open internet and it's it's is weird thing that keeps happening or the opposite of your definition of movement weekly.

"Apple i'm with you break but i like that too i mean that's pretty compelling its babe it really does change tv doesn't it really does that changes tv now mlb also said that they're coming out with and i made show app and i own my god i would love that yeah you know because it there were stats on the screen and there were all these things and you still get to see the game and you know you weren't sitting there watching a game and saying oh well you know for for nhl how many goals to t have or you know what's the score whatever information going gonna put on the screen uh you can just look at your tv and see at all and and interact with that information now i know that you know uh directtv has some uh some uh sports um what he called us and grids bright tell when things like that this just seemed more interactive and more immediate dan that stuff did maybe i'm wrong but i would be i would be on board with with that kind of a change if that's what they were gonna do meant that to me definitely sounds like something that it could be the future the idea that and think of how this would work not just with sports sports is the obvious thing because we've got stats nerds out there watching who are like oh who just caught the ball uh oh that guy well he's got these stats and before he played here he was on this team and then he was at this college and it here's a stats there it being able to see that that makes us people just lose their minds they just lose their minds of fred horta's preaugust but if you think about what's interesting to uh to to consumers to shoppers to folks who are you know you'd you'd you'd think about for example let's say you're you're watching a tv show and your wife says what i like that woman s shoes or purse or you know a guy says elm men were this this guy has his cool a gadget on his desk owner would that is you could essentially tag that and say what is that thing where did they get it and chuck that in my.
