"That happened when you win. Food delivery and you can tackle these other. Businesses onto is just like going to go well for door to which is totally fascinating. I wanna get into a product aspects of this but one of the big things for me in the story is like the primacy of them dion ping product and what it all unlocked and the fact that it is a eighteen year old product. Right silly jordache may be able to recreate this of what up at lake. They don't have the benefit of existing front or product compounding type product and. They've got business model. You know orthogonal ism here where they're restaurant partners. Don't really want the level of granularity of reviews that you would need right. The only way to arrive at the end point that may thuan has arrived is by inheriting fifteen plus years of these existing relationships and data with restaurants in this particular way. One other what to other things. I wanna put in context here for may thuan in its current valuation so on a scale of the business just take revenue as opposed to dmv or prophets. But which we should say revenue growing like thirty percent per year. Not the monster. Three to four hundred percent that we're seeing profits yup but on a size on a scale versus dorte ash. We don't yet have full year. Numbers for twenty twenty. Four may want because they haven't reported q. For yet but let's just take twenty nineteen full year twenty nine nineteen numbers as we said they did about fifteen billion dollars in usd of net revenue in tony nineteen and net revenue being. That is all their take of all the food delivery plus all they're just like revenue from all their other businesses selling tickets and booking travel and all that stuff yup doria ash in twenty twenty so with the benefit of covid which accelerated their business. Why forget exactly x three three x revenue from twenty nine hundred eighty three xt revenue in two thousand twenty even with that three x and twenty twenty a year later for door to ash. They did two point. Nine billion dollars in net revenue. So we're talking about a business. That is at least five x the scale already of door de likely six to seven likely six to seven x the scale now. Let's turn to the profitability side of the equation here so like you said. They generated a billion dollars in two thousand nineteen against taking between nineteen in operating cash flow zoom which obviously is a completely different business and mud. Higher-margin incredible gris margins incredible business on every dimension. They just reported the other day twenty. Twenty numbers keefer twenty twenty one full year twenty twenty numbers and they did one point. Five billion dollars of operating cash flow in twenty twenty so like already may on doing more operating cash flow likely than zoom at a really good guy. Because i've never thought to compare those. That's a really obviously completely different businesses. Zia in my mind is like the canonical pure software margin incredible cash flow monster. Yeah and just. The skill of thuan like zoom in door dash opposite ends of the spectrum. And here's may thanh. That's doing six seven the skill of revenue of door dash and more cash flow donors thin zoom yet. There's so many dimensions of business. Model awesomeness that is accruing to them. I mean one is like they've squashed their competitor so they've pricing power. The other that we talked about is that they're layering on all these other sources of revenue on top of cac. They've already paid or at least for new customers that they're acquiring they're able to spread that across so many different transaction types that they'll do another one that we haven't talked about. Is that like amazon. They're now making a lot of money on online marketing services which is pure profit revenue..

"Because it's not a big leap to think. Oh i could deliver food. Why can deliver a like ecommerce stuff to totally. It's like if you're an ecommerce player. They are merging world of online to offline or as people sort of refer to it the sort of amazon of services this locals. It's sort of like amazon prime. That is going to encroach on amazon. Because if you think about the us like right now. We have a difference between amazon amazon prime at some point everything. We'll just be two hours and so you have to imagine that if you're alibaba you're like this. Fleet of people delivering stuff super fast in every city in china. That is where we need to be at some point y- and now all of a sudden tensely we can't hold on. We can't stay involved in may twenty on ping because tencent are bitter. Enemy is now right here alongside us as fellow twenty percent shareholder in this company learning everything and just getting all this upside while. We're you know this is strategically very threatening to us. And so why wouldn't you try and box ten sent out like my sense. Here is like look alibaba. Bet right on the larger surviving company of the two. I mean of the two. It was dion ping that merged into mates one. And so. if i'm alibaba i'm like get the hell outta here. Ten cent yeah well and what was sequoias role in all this totally never know right. There's a lot that super untold here. So totally. I completely agree. I would love to have been a fly on the wall for those conversations. Someone i mean the got to the place where alibaba was down to sell their stake. Yup that having that just had to be what happened. Yeah so alibaba sells their entire stake in mayton paying for nine hundred million dollars and a from ulama turns around and enemy of my enemy is now my friend. Alibaba invests one and a quarter billion dollars into.

"It's interesting it's not quite like the independent gig levers in the us now set doesn't sound like it feels to me like they're their employees and they found some way to make that work. Yeah so throughout four to two thousand fourteen twenty fifteen. The two camps are sort of neck and neck by the way also said. This market is exploding. So the food delivery market in china is about four times bigger than the food delivery market in north america and it is growing at a thirty percent annual cater the whole market so both of these two camps are kind of neck and neck and fourteen fifteen they each have about thirty percent market share and then in august twenty fifteen ulama raises another. Six hundred. Thirty million dollars may thuan had raised in january of that year. Another seven hundred million dollars. Civic huge huge huge amounts capital pouring. Yeah and lamar as comes in august of two thousand fifteen and that's right before the shoe drops on october eighth two thousand fifteen the announcement of the center. I remember reading about this when it happened here in the. Us thing like oh well. That's interesting but now knowing all the context behind this may thanh and dion ping announced that they're merging so you've got these two rivals but it's almost like a proxy war with yan ping and may thuan and you say proxy works because it's between alibaba and tencent and alibaba but it's also between may thuan and on the streets literally on the streets it's between may thuan and ulama and then in terms of capital. It's between tencent and alibaba was sequoia also on both sides on all three sides here gave it any diagram. I know i know. Oh i guess wars in china and then maye thuan dan finger merging so pour la la their whole strategic advantage was the product integration with yan ping and they just raise their new investors. They just re six hundred thirty million dollars of capital two months later their main strategic partner their product advantage not only goes away goes away to their direct competitor hoof prude. wow so without spoiling it for the audience. I only know of lama because of how they come into play later in this story and knowing all of this history about them that they were actually a ten cent investment that they were actually a dion paying investment and partner is going to be astonishing. Given where they end up your. What's about to happen. So supposedly once the may twenty dan ping merger happens ten sen and sequoia supposedly go to and say because remember their investors ulama lemond. Hey look writings on the wall here. I think what makes sense is wanting to sell your assets. This new combined company. Clearly they're.

"It's not that hard to give those folks a cheap android phone and a scooter and convert them into couriers smart. And not only that. But they had the whole management organization structure built out as well around that so wait were they. Employees is there the same sort of concern over the delineation in china that there is in the. Us that's a good question. I don't know. I think it is different. But it doesn't seem to be as much of a big deal the. Us was like the biggest issue was. Well yeah sure mobile's here but they also can't be full time employees because that won't work into our structure. They have to be only paid for the time that you know the phone tells them okay now. In order and in china. I do wonder maybe we should do a good lp topic to dive into worker classification in china and understand that better. I have no idea that would be fascinating to understand better so it may totally fourteen may tonga's out. Launching goes out and raises three hundred million dollars from alibaba sequoia has investors and general atlantic new investor and rolls out this food delivery thing from the deco at one hundred cities across java so let's review investors here real quick. So matron has sequoia china. They have alibaba and they got alibaba. Double down in a big way. Then they got general. Atlantic yup and dion ping has still at this point fairly little capital. Because they've been living off the cash flow from the dan pink product and they've been around ten years. They've been around. Ten years from also sequoia china and google but google's tapped out at this point they're not gonna invest anymore in china but not cents or alibaba or by do you like their uninvolved to this point to this point so tencent being the brilliant folks they are and seeing everything going on in the country through their ownership and operation of we chat which we'll talk about more in a minute they see this dynamic too and they approach dion ping and they invest an undisclosed amount indie unpacking but must have been very large amount of capital into the company in early. Two thousand fourteen so right around the same time so now we get ten cents backing dan fagin of course tencent and alibaba are brutal rivals in by duty but poor baiju. We'll get to devon. And so they dump all this money into dan ping but tau dan ping they know they see. They're building up their own food delivery operations but they're not moving as fast as may taunton watching. They still have the internet company. Dna not the washing dna so at ten cents urging jinping goes out and leads a eighty million dollar strategic investment in another company in the space in fact in the oh gee company in the food delivery space in china. A company called lulama Which i think. I'm saying that. It is spelled e. l. e. dot m. e. and it's going to become a very important player in the story but i think it's pronounced wilma. And what they do is basically create. What may taiwanese today. So they integrate the ulama delivery courier network into the dion ping experience. So you're in the dumping out and you're looking at reviews skier choosing where to go to eat. And you've got right. They're integrated food delivery from these restaurants that you can see what dishes agreed. You might experience. When you go out to e- you'll see the calls to action in the app to go. Do them food delivery next time instead of going to eat. it's pretty powerful combination. So wait who led the investment in ulama dehaan ping did so. There's still a private company..

"Out of the country then you can bring it into the country so Chinese citizens that are lucky enough to get a passport that leave can actually obtain that. Vpn and you said to let the license gone. But that really helped us out. When we're in China with translating in using Google maps to work our way through the country and figure out how we were going to eat those probably the hardest part was figuring how to sewing Scott Their Leah with pointing to different vegetables. It would literally take it in the kitchen. She could get a little hat on Selena. Go in the kitchen and no one knew what she was saying. She was able to point at raw vegetables and meat and they would learn that. She wanted corn and tomatoes and chicken. And that's how they were GonNa make her dinner that night. It's worth saying mentioning that. There are not many English speaking people in the Union region so it is very important to download Google translate on or any other translating ABC. We use Google translate. It was pretty simple to use. And also maybe downloading the Chinese keyboard on your phone before it so that if you're having trouble communicating you can switch your keyboard to Chinese letters that they could try and communicate also on your APP. Your translation APP so that they could type something in and then you translate it and find out what they were talking about because they may not know the opinion Ford or the the Chinese with Western characters got. Yeah definitely a big pro tip you will. We figured out how to easily communicate what we wanted in restaurants is took of preparation before we left our hotel room so we figured out where we want to eat. Probably by walking by place or using Google maps and so on Google maps. If you're looking at a restaurant like you see the little little character and you press on the restaurant. There's usually a link to a Chinese yelp type back dion. Yes this is very small so Dion Ping little bring up that same restaurant and then it'll have the top ten dishes of that entire menu. A game we liked to play was choosing the top three things on the menu taking a screen shot of those. Because it's all in Chinese letters could not understand the on paying whatsoever but you. There was a picture involved. It's like Oh man that looks really good. Let's let's get that. I have no idea what this is. Let's get this so we would screen shot all these menu items on. Tang and show the restaurant these screen shots on our phone Time really delighted that we had done this extra preparation so that it was an easier communication process between us and also make sure we were getting what we wanted. That's definitely so funny that you do. What was extra work to communicate but it made everything really funny just because unification really. I have no idea what you're saying. They're in a situation that they're saying the exact same thing. I have no idea what they're saying to me in an everybody starts giggling. So it's really funny but if you use these very basic apps I mean it's not like we had the most specialized translation APP with US Basic Google Translation. But it's all very doable. Especially if you have a VPN excellent any other tips that you would have for travel in China. That's timers especially to go into the subway from the airport into. The city is in English and Chinese. But once you get into the city is just in Chinese so getting a map of the airport of subway is important thing but also when you go to these buses or train stations were telling you about. It's easiest to use you translate APP to get the Chinese characters of the city going to so that way when you go to the representative. Kay you can show them those Chinese characters in. There's is no more than you'd be said to give you the amount you give them the payment Adnan. It's that easy and you go on your way and then you show that same the name of the city to the people in the station To go that are taking that before you leave. Your Hotel Real. Yeah even say that you also have a awareness of where you're actually going on of us to talent your excellent world maps or sometimes a way to do that as well if you have a map and can point out to them where you WANNA go. Charades work sometimes gets excellent well. Let's get to some of our wrap up questions and of all the places. You went in Yunan if I told you were standing in front of the prettiest place where you're standing on what you're looking at Tiger Leaping Gorge Jade Snow Dragon Okay. It is the most difficult to get to. It is worth the trouble getting there just to see beautiful mountains snowcapped. They're so dramatic. The clouds roll in they. Roll back out you feel like you're in a nat. Go movie almost excellent and one thing that makes you laugh and say only none the dancing women. The dancing women are trying to communicate with anyone. was as it was such a shock because we saw many people dancing in the city to current pop songs in these women put out songs from the sixties that we hadn't heard since our parents were playing them or like. How did they get these songs? Let alone choreographed dance at the same every many Internet so we actually build some of it and we would go back and tried to rehearsals as dance moves to this day. We do that. It's like we saw people dancing in. May differ countries suffer summaries? Then the woman Dali just really stuck to ask as lots of our excellent our guests again have been Zach and Leah from Peregrination Dash Travel Dot com and the peregrination YouTube channel. Global news twenty four hours a day on air and it takes on Twitter powered by more than twenty seven. Hundred journalists and analysts symbol the one hundred twenty countries. I'm beyond guarantee. This is Linda Marcus by so much. Indeed Leon let's turn to our guest this hour Elliot to get across assets. Strategist at a UniCredit joins us now in the London studio gray tabby Elia on this day when we are seeing BT yield shooting higher twenty basis points says I'm looking at them now that for the ten year that is three point zero eight five percent this of course, on the back of the talian budget forecast deficit for cost being unveiled last night. Two point four percent. This is the market that seems disappointed. Here's promoting everyone. I would say that we've been waiting for a few weeks this number and finally the publication of our numbers allow us to have a little bit better idea. What is the governance plan a deficit of two point four? It's I would say as lady on top of what was market expectations. For for many days, a number of around two percents related on the market and even over the past few days, add lines suggests that that might be the risk of additional slippage. Two point four comes a little bit of both station. So the pressure that we've seen on Italian assets. I think comes from from this immediate reaction. However, I think that there are a few factors that might limit the downside over the medium term. So once we see the immediate reaction what can happen next and disrespect. I I mean, top of my mind calm. The fact that positioning on BT's has been lightening up quite significantly over the past few months. So if we look at may and June alone about sixty billion of outflows. Went out of the Italian depth market. This is about non-residents investor. So those investors are a bit more sensitive. Let's say to political of fiscal developments in the country. So those investors that are left are unlikely to botch. That's essentially what you're saying. Yeah. I think that the the room for additional lightning up of positioning. It's more limited his should offer some buffer I would say to market move. And then one might also wants to consider the fact that BDP's already trading towards the upper end of the range. There has been prevailing over the past six months. So if we look at the market developments since the government signed unequally, we already pricing in quite a significant amount of negative information. Maybe now going forward. This is also going to be a game of messaging to a certain extent, right? If the government manages to sell to the market that this is deficit that will pay off lay. Later down the line in terms of higher growth. I mean is that something that we also must take into account? I mean, we we're focusing on one specific number Davis number, but. We still need to see what are the assumptions in terms of structure budget balance. What is the path of the cheapie ratio that the government has in mind and the budget low per se is a very lengthy process. So the lowest to go to the parliament, then you have to discuss it with the commission reaction by rating agencies, for instance. So it's a very lengthy process and over this process, the might be the room for more messages, and I would say they'd be the peace would remain exposed to edlund risks in this respect right to Elliott across asset strategists that UniCredit stay right there. There's plenty more to talk about after what's been a pretty an eventful week. We have had US tariffs on Chinese imports, for instance, being put into place. How's that going to be impacting market's going forward, the reaction? So.

"Hong Kong eight thirty AM here in Sydney on Ellen. And Brian good in Tokyo, Sydney, and Seoul and three hours out from the start of the market action in Hong Kong and Shanghai. I know what you're thinking. What's up here? What's brewing in these markets? Even though it seemed like the trade tensions increased yesterday. Most of the markets were green overnight. And also, you know, people would say that maybe the national team was starting getting play in in China. But what about the Nikkei, what about the kospi? They wouldn't be affecting that so lots of questions to be answered in the action today. Doug krizner will bring up to date on all that in just a moment. But for now, all and I will take a look at the top stories. We'll China's confirmed of will retaliate against President Trump's latest tariffs targeting. Sixty billion dollars worth of US imports. Those measures will take effect on Monday over Beijing says it is still open to negotiation so far no sign. President Trump plans to back down from those trade threats. Our country has been abused and taken advantage of by virtually every country that it does business with and we're just not letting that happen anymore. Trump spoke today at the White House and the president is also threatening tough action should China. Impose those new tariffs. Axios is reporting that a bipartisan group of US senators is planning legislation that could reinstate sanctions against Z T E back in May President Trump imposed a one point three billion dollar fine on the Chinese telecoms equipment making company, but lifted the bans that threaten to shut it down completely. The new Bill would reportedly reimpose sanctions on ZEE TV if it infringes any of the probationary conditions. The Chinese parenting side backs by Alibaba maybe running into trouble as Bloomberg's Yvonne man reports. Baby tree is struggling with a downturn in business ahead of its planned IPO. Bloomberg news has viewed a snapshot of baby trees numbers that. It's not looking good average monthly active users fell by almost fifty percent in the first six months of the year compared to a year ago, and this may not bode well for the side backed by folks on international as well as Alibaba. We had heard an IPO was slated for later this year in Hong Kong as a company. Moved to capitalize on expected population. Boom as Beijing relaxes its longstanding one child policy in Hong Kong. I'm Yvonne, man. Bloomberg daybreak Asia. The Federal Reserve has completed the sale of securities acquired a decade ago during the rescue of Bear, Stearns it closes another chapter in the history of the financial crisis. The Bank says the transaction has been running for several months the final sale in the last two weeks saw net gain US tax payers of two and a half billion dollars. Full. Details of the transaction or expected in December the Dow and NASDAQ all advanced we've got more from Bloomberg's Charlie Pellett in this Wall Street wrap the S and P five hundred index scored its biggest gain and almost three weeks as investors shrugged off the latest salvos in the trade war between the US and China neural Rabin is the chairman of Rabin global economics China and positioning being kind of lose face. And what happens is the United States is not just a train. Or Regina geopolitically wants to contain China. China's on his own made in China twenty twenty five program, for example. And therefore the risk is that if you tried to contain China, China's going to become actually more aggressive and less cooperative. And I think that's what's going to happen S and P five hundred index of fifteen of five tenths of one percent. The Dow up one hundred eighty four points up seven tenths NASDAQ up sixty that was a gain of eight tenths of one percent in New York. Charlie Pellett, Bloomberg daybreak Asia. All right. The time is thirty four minutes past the hour. Let's get a look at the Asia Pacific and krizner joins us. Doug. I clumsily raise the question a few moments ago, the maybe yesterday marked a turning point. But if you listen to Norio Rabin there in that clip. Well, you made an interesting point to Brian when you brought up the issue of the so-called national team, and whether they were in a buying mood overnight because of the move that we had not only on the mainland but in Hong Kong as well. But check out this strategist overachieved P Morgan say that despite trade headwinds their asset allocation remains overweight, equities versus fixed income with an increasing contrary until toward EM. That's an interesting call, isn't it? So Charlie was right in terms of the rally that we had stateside and the dollar eking out small gains, the big move in the foreign exchange a much weaker yen. We were down about one half of one percent against the greenback. Now yesterday in Tokyo, equities rallied to a seven-month high. The Nikkei was up one point four percent that setting us up for another move higher. The yen weakness I'm referring to right now. If you look at your cargo Nikkei futures, we could see a move of around two hundred seventy points to the upside Chicago contract at twenty three thousand six nine. Right now also have to contend with the the relationship between the yen and the yield on the US ten year treasury some of this yen weakness may be derivative of the backup in long term interest rates here the ten year last quoted in New York three point zero five percent may chew on Dion ping, raising Hong Kong dollars. This is the total for their IPO. Thirty two point six billion and trading is expected to begin in that IPO on September. Twentieth. Paul to you. And thanks very much. Doug. Well, this is day. Two of South Korean president moon. Jae-in trip to Pyongyang. Bloomberg's Ed.
