"Anything's possible. I'm your host, Jack Russell over with Richard Digger Phelps and from 1971 to 1991. He was the head basketball coach at the University of Notre Dame. You're 29 years old. There's a legendary father Theodore Hesburgh hires you with Father Joyce. What did they tell you, Digger? Well, basically during the interview followed, Joyce eloped first, and we met in Detroit and the neutral site, and then he went back. And don't follow Ted. He's the guy we're gonna hire. So when I arrived another name they told me three things. Make sure that they graduate by going to class. And make sure we don't break any insane rules that make sure we're competitive, and I said What's being competitive? It's Edwin 18 games a year. So for years 20 years I was there They were big inspiration. And father husband, of course, is President. So like 1985 would file a choice. But the thing about father has for people don't realize that when I tell people I'm a disciple, Father, Esther. He was more than just the priest. Actually, 1957 President Eisenhower asked him to get three men from the South Three men from north including him and come up with the Civil Rights Act. And they went up to the land of lakes and Wisconsin, where Notre Dame has a little retreat place where the priest go up and just mellow out and pray and get spiritual guidance. So they went up there to six men, and they came up with the Civil Rights Act. They took it to the White House. They give it the President Eisenhower Eisenhower course When he left, he gave us the Kennedy and President Kennedy was gonna use it to run in the second term. To get re elected, but he got assassinated. So here comes LBJ. Well, things got done with LBJ in Congress because the 1964 to Civil Rights Act passed well to me. Father Hesburgh is the godfather of the Civil Rights Act, and he was more than just the President University of Notre Dame. What was interesting about his life beyond the campus, and I would say that we should go to pre She's restaurant here in town and get his famous Italian sauce. Out of Jeannie Alfredo because Alfredo was a restaurant and right near the Vatican in Rome, and he and Monsignor Montini, who became Cardinal Montini Became Pope Paul A six. They were great friends, and they used to go to eat Alfredo sauce at Alfredo's restaurant, and that's how that all started with him. What was interesting one night of creases? I said Father, Ted. Give me your starting five and he turned to me. He said you still coaching, and I said, I wanna know how I got to play against. If we're gonna play five on five, he started with Pope all of six, which, because of their friendship, and who they were and how they work. What was interesting when Pope all of six invited father Ted over to the Vatican? He was going to make him a karma, and he gets the green ring out and puts it on the table and father Ted, sitting on one side, the pope's on the other side and the post secretaries behind him. Another cardinal. While the 10 said no, thanks. I'm a priest. I'm going to be a priest on my life, and he kept trying to push them together. Well, after an hour, he takes a drink puts in his pocket. He leaves the office in the pope's secretary says, You stupid Makana. You don't know He tried to make you Carm. You said no. You know, I'm a priest because back a year later to see his buddy football, the six and the Cardinal says in the secretary. Where's the ring? Where is the ring? It's back in my office. He died with that ring. I saw Melanie, who was his administrative assistant. She showed me the ring several times. So he died with that pope's ring to make him a cardinal, but he never accepted to become a garden. Okay, number two. He says President Eisenhower anything great friends, not just during the Civil Rights Act, But even after that was written and done. They used to meet a Gettysburg where Eisenhower started. Camp David. And that became one of those historic sites, which they still use the president, but there are great friends through the whole lifestyle, and he and I became really, really close. And then, of course, third was Father, Joyce. Who ran the place when Hesburgh was never around. And father Joyce to Mei was one of those priests. Very smart business wise and what has word we're doing Fundraising Father Joyce made sure I went to the right components and make Notre Dame one of this today. Then I figure it's got to have a woman and I think it's gonna be John Crock because the crocks and has for became great friends, and they've given a lot of money to Notre Dame. No, it was his administrative assistant, Helen. I said Helen. Oh, yeah. She used to run my life in that office next to his office in the administration building And this feeble whole lady who were big, thick glasses and Fingertips were just beyond his old Underwood typewriter, and she'd be smoking her cigarette. And one day she says, Father Ted, do you have a speaker yet for commencement? And he says now and I'd only have appreciate from running the Columbus A master to seniors. She says. Why don't you ask your friend Eisenhower? Oh, he's too busy as president. He won't come out here for that. Did you ask him now? And she says, I think you ask. Well, Helen, why don't you ask? She types up a little letter sense of the White House with the Kerry comes back. A week later, she goes into Father Ted's office. A father Ted, There's ice letter. He's coming to speak of graduation. Did you get one of your priest? Friends from Rome yet the commandments a math and that turned out to be Pope Paul. The six So any number five. I said, whose number five. This is Frank Lady. I said you fired. Frankly, he's well. There's a story before that, when Father Jon Kavanaugh was present in late Fords Password was in the administration. Followed Johnson. I'm gonna make you dean of the faculty because of faculty are out of control. And by the way, I want you to take over football because Coach Leahy has those guys practicing when they should be in class. So, Father Ted read the Big 10 manual. And in the Big 10 manual, they would only travel with 35 players. Well, ladies traveling with 48 players, So Hesburgh said, No. You're just gonna travel with 35. So how's Berg's game freeze when they're going out to Seattle on a train for two days, the play the University of Washington and they have mass every morning on the train, But Leahy would not go and say hello to history. Got that, Max? So we're losing a halftime against Washington. And we come back and win the game in the second half and lay. He just rips the referees and rips the whole scene and they're cheating. And bye bye, blah. So we get negative press around the nation Headlines cry, baby noted and comes from behind to beat Washington the second half So all of a sudden they're back on campus and father Ted calls, Frank ladies. Come on, Frank. We're gonna take a walk around ST Mary's late father. I'm sorry. I know I should have said that. I'm sorry for the exposure, getting the negative press around the country. He said. Father get a lot of mail. He says Yes. What are you doing with it? He says. I just burned it. Burned it. Okay, so they're going around the lake. He still thinks he's getting fired. And father, Ted finally says, Look, Frank. From now on, you take a private plane a charter to go on these away games like the Southern cow. You don't have to take a train anymore. And so that was the starting five. And that's how it all ended up with coach Lady. Father, Ted Gut..

"Wow. We still have a teepee. We still have time to this is great. This just hit me. So sometimes you hear me say I haven't taken a phone call today. Because I'm good like that. I can. I could his role as a single host. I'm like a dinosaur and an icon. Both. I can host a show by myself. No other multiple talking heads. It's little bit unusual. Sometimes I say you're not going to an entire program that a single phone call. What I've never said is I could do an entire program without a rand or a take. We have not had a take it today. Because of the very top of the show. I went with the mark in Hollywood phone call and then just started chasing and rolling and doing interviews in doing built in segments. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think I've given you an actual rant. That's unusual. And I've gone really heavy on this segment. Well, you all day with your beefs. Good job well done as a reminder. Tomorrow is the last show of the year and it is the year in review. So this is your last opportunity off 2020 to get to me and say or do whatever you want, because you will not have that opportunity tomorrow. I've got a huge call coming up later on today. We had to be. I see we had mark in Hollywood. Benny made an appearance. Digger Phelps made an appearance. You never know who might call this show. 1 806 368686..

"I'm have to tell you guys what it means and what it stands for and then the kind of kids we've been able to attract to make our basketball brand relevant. I don't know if they told you this before but you suck a thought in my head that one of your predecessors once told me when I was Frank McLaughlin that that one reason he took the Harvard job was he was having breakfast club Digger Phelps. She was it was a dicker's assistant at the time at Notre Dame and said, oh the Harvard job just open I forget which you know, and he said you ought to look into that. I think it's good. I think it's a good job and and and he wouldn't he said I would never have and entered my mind to apply for that job. If Digger hadn't said, you know, so I just did just think that just lasted cuz in my head when you when you think of or write McLaughlin you think of Frank Sullivan, I mean, you know, you talk about some really really neat guys, you know, some great concept. I'm very bad cuz Frank and I are because we've become very good friends Sullivan, so I'm dead. Because I mean of course, I mean I mean in how well did they represented what they did they they have been very supportive and helpful to me Frank both of them, you know prior to me when you say who did I talk to I talked to both of those guys and they were very very encouraging and helpful in ways of you know, the nuances of you know of the ivy league of of Harvard in general and and very thoughtful very supportive. I'm very grateful to both of those guys are both of those coaches who are terrific people great gentleman and were outstanding coaches as both of you know, right now I get to the important stuff. They've got all the preliminaries, you know, but let's get your point stuff. My daughter wants me to ask you what was it like coaching mode Lewis's son. Oh, That's a great question and I'll tell you this is a great story about Moe, Moe and crystalline. So Chris Lewis is his name their son that was off display for us. I mean a joy to coach Mo, you know, when we we got it in one of the reasons we got it was because of the dean of.

"But there were times we had to step in and defer and if we saw the coaches, cars pull up outside of homes Hall where we are lived on campus, we might have to go to the back door and Get into a conversation with the coaches for five or seven minutes himself to make sure they knew we were in. But there's some other guys coming in the other door like I mean, so that was that was That was a fun time for us. No question about that, Rick before I let you go, man. Just speak to us a little bit about the importance of that rope Arena crowd that we're just not seen. Obviously we call Cove. It would not seeing that this year. How important is that? Especially for young team. Oh, yes. Uh, I mean, that's what it's all about. That's why you come play from Kentucky because of you know the span support and When you go out there and you have 23,000 plus back and yes, there's no question. It's uh, it get you get you in the different mode than if you're walking into an empty gym. Like practice s O You know, I feel for all these. I mean, all these kids, uh, you know, they work so hard to get to where they are, and they're not really getting to enjoy. A real college atmosphere, not only in Stadium, but even on campus what they're having to go through S so hopefully we'll get this behind us. And Angel change so everybody can get back and start watching these ballgames. Yeah, what I what I think about is you know what Kentucky basketball we way didn't have to deal with the one and done but Every year. There's someone in Dunn's How How bad would it be for God to come in here in this situation come into the University of Kentucky and Not get to experience that and then all of a sudden they're thinking well, I move on to the next level that that's just Ah, huge part of Kentucky basketball that and being on campus and being around the other students that They will never be able to experience There's no question about it. And, uh, you know, it's uh It's something you don't really realize. When you're the airplane in Kentucky until you're done. And then you just see the excitement, uh, of the fans. You know, to this day, you know, I'm getting ready to turn 65 years old and, uh, I'll mention that don't mention about that loud man. Hey, hey, Every day somebody comes up to you and talk, see about Kentucky Bioscope home very quickly Before I let you go, Um your thoughts on the one and done everybody I talk to about basketball don't care if it's 10 years old or 65 years old order. Everybody has their opinion. Tell me your thoughts on that. Well, I can't blame the kid. You know the player, you know, because of the opportunity financially that it does for these players today. I hate it is a fan because I finally get to know who these guys aren't been all suddenly changes the new group and you have to really learn who they are. Oh, I think that's what I miss the most. Hey, I want to ask you guys one more question before we let you go each one of you your memories of playing Notre Dame. Well, it was always because I hit narrowed it down between Notre Dame in Kentucky. Really recruiting time and Digger Phelps, you know, spent a lot of time at my house. So every year that was a huge ball game for me, because I really wanted a whipping. And I will say, uh, last our senior year when we need them, Uh, digger actually gave my mom a safe Saint Christopher medal saying, you know your son and his teammates with us every time it was that I was gonna go about e. I was gonna say that, Dave, you know, it was bigger for Rick. Then it was from a night. I could tell you about playing against the Adrian Dantley. Oh, that's college for puke A and those kind of guys, But this is my best memory from playing Notre Dame. Okay, way. It was a tough game. We win the ballgame. We get on the bus to drive back to Lexington. Co. Charles Way Up front. We had a few guys. It's a long bus ride. By the way. Well, we won the game, so it was okay. We're having a good time. Everything was cool. There were a couple guys who and I know this is politically incorrect right now, but there were a couple of guys who chewed tobacco, okay? So there were a couple guys back there, too. And she's your players. These air players, these air players, so you know, I mean, they used to do that baseball players used to do it. I don't know. I've heard of guys like smoking, You know, having a heater something, but I've never heard of anybody Jewish. Okay, So we were back there and I was looking and I'm thinking, man. That's the nastiest thing I've ever seen spitting in the cup. They talked me into doing it. Okay? No, I put a little bit in there and The story's just between you men wreck, Okay? Yeah, Nobody else is listed. So I put a piece of it in there, man. And by the time we got to Frank for your green, I didn't. I was green as a black guy can get. But I had no clue if we're going toe Lexington or if we were going to be Oh, I mean, it was the worst experience men into this day. I've never had another piece of the back of my mouth. My God, that's that's one of the things I remember that bus ride back. Number that man and that is so great. They helped me a lot that those two great stories Rick, Thanks so much for taking the time of being with us. Hope you and your family are staying healthy and everything and everybody is good. Appreciate it very much. Jack. Look forward to seeing you next Thursday. I'll see you Thursday. But thanks for coming on with this, Rick. Thanks again, Rick. Great Riker. Oh, boy. That's a great segment. Jack. That's why people love it's all right. We're gonna take a break. Come back. Get Jack's simple truth. Keys to the game will keep the to back away from him that much more. "Yeah, right And the rest of that branch off from the guys in charge from those guys. Yeah, that's interesting to look at that. I mean, clearly you think of the Cleveland Browns back in the mid mid seventies, mid nineties, when Bill Belichick was the head coach. Will you grant? Pull up that pull up if you can. The Cleveland Browns coaching roster back in 90. I don't know for When when Belichick was there and look at the names on that. Coaching. Tree that coaching roster. And it's mean Jim Schwartz was on that later became a head coach. Um Ozzie Newsome was on that, as an assistant coach later became may be as good a general manager as we've ever had in the history of this league. Um The Nick Saban was on that staff. We all know about Nick Saban's coaching acumen. I think Um Scott, Scott Pio Li Was on that staff for part of that staff, and he later became a GM running two different organisations. Kirk parents also hurt fares was the line coach on the brown staff. And obviously, now is the Head coach of the University of Iowa. There's a couple of more There's a couple of younger guys that really went onto good careers. Then. In the league. Yes, it's amazing job bugle, too part of the woody tree. Didn't know that. You know, either. George Shop, Navy head coach. Yes. Or it looks like champions chump. I think I remember having his champ Dave McClane, Wisconsin, you head coach. Doit Perry Bowling Green. Miles. Stop Cincinnati, would he looks like he's the man? When it comes to Ah, Glen Mason. Remember, Glenn Make sure university Kansas Dick LeBeau. I didn't realise Dick Lobel. I think he did. I don't know. I don't remember that. Well, he played OK, so he played for Woody. Gary Moeller, John McVeigh, There's up and it's a long list here era procedure. The airport's Egan was was part of that Miami of Ohio staff. I don't think airports Egon ever worked in Ohio State that no member northwestern Notre Dame in Miami behind me of Ohio. Interesting. Did he recruit you? He did. Coach Parseghian set in my parents. Living room. How cool is that? That was pretty. You know what for an 18 year old punk that was I was pretty cool that he was a big, big, big name back there and then obviously I did not go to Notre Dame. But then the college All Star game that was played and that was the final college All Star game and I Participated in that in Chicago. We played the Steelers coach Parseghian was the head coach. He just He just retired from being the head coach. Notre Dame. I know we're out of time. But how could you have era come to your house and then not go to Notre Dame? I mean, seriously, you know what? Notre Dame and Digger Phelps Said in my living room as well and digger was the basketball coach at Notre Dame. And so he will recruit me in basketball, and I didn't go because you want a mom and dad to watch him play? Yeah. I mean, I was C U had had it going on, and I was a local kid. You know, suddenly get it. Stay home. 10 25 time. Stick around more ahead on K away individual results. Very exclusions apply. Imagine feeling the freedom of.

"Of advanced medicine Sam Utah's beating Kentucky in the paint other seventeen points they get fourteen of those underpaid out of Kentucky thirteen they have twelve of those in the paper and that's an area rapper Kentucky has been able to dominate the falls all year long when you talk about points in the paint but when you play this Utah ball club you understand that this is a team that likes to get the ball down low they're a big physical ball club another area that concerns me right now is three pounds Kentucky has dominated the falls all year long in that area as well but as we sit here with this break they're already up on Kentucky by account of ninety two ninety two of the last two minutes and forty three seconds of they've had their run one thing I would agree with drew Hanson who is a Rhodes scholar candidate for for you talk to the press conference yesterday when asked about digger Phelps saying that in order for them to win the other night against North Carolina they will have to play a zone this is what drew Hanson said and I would second the motion digger crap doesn't know crap about the game well I second that motion eleven forty six to go Utah or put the ball in play looking for even the bigger lead this is equal to four point two the biggest I've had tonight they look to put in place to get it in the Miller Miller will have no one will work against Turner we still can talk you'll use two threes four different players tonight to guard Miller the thought to metal on the left hand side I don't top the handsome both teams are rotating the benches early gone back to another guard at this time on the left side over the given governmental level with a basketball schools and public schools are protected off the glass no good red metal gets the rebound block by Mohammed loose on the court Evans goes to the court and it goes on about officials are leading employee here this championship game and let it be decided on the court not for the whistle and that concerns me rob because this is a big physical Utah.

"Ron digger. Phelps has joined us here on sports byline again. This book is out. Check it out. Father Ted Harrisburg. He coached me as the name of the book in the book. You talk about the remembrance of Father Ted at the funeral and the outpouring of support that it inspired did anything. Surprise you about that outpouring. Now you know they they just knew. I mean. That's the thing that surprised me. The most when we left the basilica after his funeral mass and walks in a cemetery which is tradition even though he was in a hearse and the the priests would follow her and then close family and then friends. What impressed me and I'm walking. Linda and I'm looking at because both sides of the road repacked bound. Maybe a half mile walk from the silica up to the cemetery where all the theresa buried onto campus and I said to myself and I looked at Linda I said. Aren't we coed? She looked at me when she knew why. Both sides roads were lined with women. Not Men here but the women stood out and that was father has burs you know vision of what Notre Dame should they and this is gone back two years ago. Two Thousand Fifteen the other thing. That was really amazing with the city. The number guys smoking cigars. They were walking alive because has always enjoy a good cigar especially given way to get him out of Cuba. But I think more importantly It was how he as a as a priest and knowing that you have mentioned for what this university should be and putting people in positions where they can make a difference in other people's lives once they leave. This university wasn't just being a lawyer doctor. A an accountant. Whatever it may in Ben for men and women it was more when you get in that community. Make a difference to have nuts because that's the mission of the SE's The Pre stent Notre Dame. But I looked at him as as one guy when I got motivated and what he did with a civil rights and at that time it was for African Americans at the end of this life that civil rights black. I think what's as for all cultures. All religions all colors skin. It's what people need and it's that they have the right to be someone that can be positive and have an opportunity to win in a game. My life and I decided to do this book when I'm doing for him in the Civil Rights Act as what I get as far as income from this book. I'm pointing a scholarship together in his name for someone who needs it That's coming to Notre Dame and I think that's how we'll get a download the other side step. I think this out. I was on the sentencing Ratchet Committee for twenty two years and a lot of things behind the scenes that they then realise from nineteen eighty-four. Two thousand six one of them was back in nineteen eighty eight when we had the hundredth anniversary of Newt Rodney and that's tamper-proof so I went to the White House to President Reagan. The gipper which he did from what he played in that movie New Rock Dame. He was the GIPPER and He certainly had this Nancy. Ten thousand people well founder. Has this Thursday. The twenty fifth. We'll be hired years old That would be as anniversary. So since. No one's around since School Jessica Out September first on the Friday before the football season at home. We're GONNA have that first day of issue by the Postal Service. They've announced it and he's getting a forever stamp And His name and honor which means whatever you pay for it now you use it forever and by by role one hundred they can use them five years from now but more importantly It's what he was as a priest and now here it is. I think he's got honorary degrees from one. Hundred fifty colleges universities around the world. That's the impact. He made an education so I decided one of his favorite students ever that came to Notre Dame was Condoleeza Rice. Who's right down the road? From from San Francisco at Stanford. She came and got a masters here because Father Esko Berg. Not Family knew her and wanted to hear it again. That opportunity what she did so she will be the main speaker on September first priority at the ACC cases center and to honor Father Pittsburgh forgetting forever digger. One of the things that I know is that he set the tone for that university for some thirty five years and when it comes to the Athletic Department because I've had a lot of interaction with them what has struck me is is that they're not just athletes They're trained to be good people as well. I know when I go do an interview Athlete was in a coat and tie. He would show up on time. He would answer questions. I mean it was a different atmosphere than what I have seen almost anywhere else. Tell me a little bit about that. Development of the people on that campus. Well you'd go out recruit young man and get him at the age of eighteen. And you've got four years for manhood. And what what Notre Dame believes in the student athlete? They walked free. I coach fifty six players and all fifty six guys in twenty years that night. Coach got their degrees include. Nate Newton dancing Gary Brokaw but went to summer school after junior years. I made him promise her mom's they connect in summer school To get their degree. They left that they're juniors lanee NBA in both of them. Then they got their degrees. But it's what's their life after Basketball Fan. Wilcox on seventy eight final fourteen. He's now athletic. Director at Florida State. when I look and see Scott Paddock. He's President Chicago speedway When I look at Jamir Jackson who was from Peoria Illinois he is now president of Nansen ratings when it comes to the CFO. He's the guy runs the whole operation all these guys. I'm gone and have a life after their sport after basketball my case and when you take a look at what came out stats about four years ago. Seventy percent in the NBA and NFL players. Seventy percent five years and retire bankrupt. Well that doesn't happen too. Because they get the grease and they know how to play the game of life after sporting donning spring. Still in all of us as coaches as well as what? These athletes no one. I got into Notre name one of the things that I always interested in is the fact that there's one single memory of father Hedberg. What would that be for you because you interacted with him in such a a multiple and I know that's a tough question? No I tend to book. I'm a cancer survivor. Twice prostate cancer and bladder cancer and each time I go get a blessing for Father Hesterberg before the surgery and what happened. Bladder cancer back in two thousand fourteen. I wanted him and I said file a Guinea blessing befriends surgery and he said to me digger have the courage. I wrote that down the picture of that standard. It's still my while the piece of paper and a picture of that is in the book on what he did to inspire me to okay. You can pray. But you're going to get this done and you're going to want it and That is to me the memory and most and when he was sick and dying that last week I went and saw him over the Holy Cross House aftermath one day for lunch and I said remember what you told me when I had my bladder cancer and he looked and I said well here. It is have the courage. Well we're GONNA win this. You're going to have the courage. They weren't going to win a nice held. Its Own He in other blessing on the forehead before you know today's next after that he just didn't make any path. And that was the toughest thing until I went to the basilica because we we've had times when he had been sick maybe for a week and he'd fight it and come back in a wing was lousy and we just said when you know like hey it's February on April. You're going to be fine. So what happened was when he past March the third. They had yelling at the basilica on the campus. Lender got there by quarter in the three. A casket was there and man. I just lost it for ten minutes. I could not believe seeing them. They're in an open casket but a little sidebar had one of the freest awesome collins. Make sure he got a Cuban Cigar. Leave Linen is journey and the other thing I did Dan. Zak a guy runs a basilica for the Holy Cross priest. That's for these metals. A Saint Jude Medal in the Laney on Adele metal. Thank you just to gotTA. Ucla Game Mellon to we started winning causes and seventy six on won four straight years when I get a saint jude medal and the lady on the sacred heart. He blessed those medals and give them the people who are sick or got some issues on his behalf and light candles form but the ground stories in the book. But I tell John I said do me a favor. Here's two mantles makes jury takes them the next day the funeral. I see John Zach and I said John. Did you get the males in the casket? He said Yeah. Bigger there is less sleep next to a cigar. I mean that's been tested. That's that's how we were dating and Too many as I say a pretty appre for us. There's no I mean why not been quartzite bar. The Kennedys Fan came out in John F. Kennedy and snap back in the early spring like an April up in Boston and a friend of mine is the marketing for Postal Service. I have the Kennedy Sam. He said when excellent there any sympathy. I gotTa tell you this. He's a toupee. Come one come month as man came up and said father has used. Babysit my my sister and me back when obviously when finally went to Notre Dame he said. I'm bringing my mother ceremony. She's in her nineties. And and the vice president said okay. I'll send you an imitation of the postal service. He's on the call online right now picked up the phone in derive, ask of you. Clones lobby. Telephone call elevate conversation. Make the show better. We go to south bend a man digger digger. How are you? I'm fine. I'll tell you it so ironic I was so happy when mounting Williams was named the Phoenix Suns coach, and obviously he's got to stay with the seventy Sixers into the playoffs. And then there's another Notre Dame connection with the Phoenix Suns. And that's John Shumate who was a big star UCLA ending eighty eight winning streak of UCLA and Bill Walton back in seventy four and he's sort of like one of the scouts that goes out and looking for certain college players what they're going to draft. But Jones is the right guys general manager, but I'll say this about money Williams. His life's journeys been interesting. Yes, I recruited him. He was some Washington DC area. He played a freshman. And then all of a sudden the southbound area little heart from Mississippi's admits he still made the back like Shumate his south more year yet heart problem this decision, but he made to come back. But the thing is about Mountie he had a real tragedy a couple of years ago when he lost his wife and Oklahoma City car accident. Popovich took care volume down to San Antonio and money was there. And then of course, he ends up on the Sixers, but this break for me to see him when we talked the other night when he got the job on the phone. And I just think he's ready to make thing happened because he did coach into Orleans back win as head coach and that didn't work out. But he knows the system he knows the NBA. And I guarantee you he's only get Phoenix's James Jones said yes, we're going to win. We're going to go in that room figure out what we need to make judgments but mounting. It will be the guy that these guys believe at both ends of the court to win an NBA championship for Phoenix. I love this bonus content premium content. Digger Phelps calling on the call online Giger. So you, of course, recruited money to Notre Dame. What do you remember about the first time you saw him? Well, actually, I saw him in a summer camp know like one of those Nike camps, and he was playing and one of my assistants back. Then I said. Let's check those kids grades out. Well, he had the grades. And I said, well, we got gotta recruit this guy because he's got potential be a big time player, which obviously he became for us Notre Dame and at the same time his whole career in the NBA from being player to being a coach being Ed coast. He's always had this will to win so to speak and seeing certain players when you recruit them is not so much what their talent is but other characteristics where they play above their potential under pressure. And that's what he is. And he's got the cool personality won't see him being screaming and yelling, and I'm a little in Beijing other nights goes he's still saying, yes, sir to me. Yes. Coach. Just call me digger. It's fine year old note male you you've earned that. But I just think that when I spotted him as a recruiter we've always had great success Dame as you go back. And yes, the proudest moment I had was another for twenty years coaching Notre Dame fifty six guys play for me off fifty six graduate. So this guy's a winner. Digger Phelps calling it on the call in line dig rate as always good to hear your voice. I appreciate the friendship, and you can call this show anytime you want no waiting. It's really good. I think that he's called the program since we came on the CBS sports network degrees. Come on the show quite a bit back in the day. Day. But again, I love that insight. He recruited Monte to daughter Dame money with that heart issue and Notre Dame to look like it was going to end his playing days, but he fought through that as he has everything else is life career. He's dealt with some real heartbreak digger, so good to hear your voice. Any other legendary famous coaches wanna call the program and don't be a moron. Don't beat him muscle. "And Kelly and some other players transitioned into the NBA. And I'm saying gosh darn if coach Phelps didn't keep this team from running up and down you guys probably score eighty five game instead of whatever was fifty eight sixty points a game, but the defenseless solid. There's no doubt about it. Tell me a little bit about your days blamed for digger Phelps and Notre Dame. That's a lot of commentary. You made a lot of raw. The digger was about himself. And we had a great team. We all all the players bonded together. We let a good we had nine pros and one team at one point and defense team. A good basketball. Great great talent. Chief? Maybe we didn't win my whole my whole career is that it did not win a college championship. What the final four? Okay. Big deal. Got you lead eight okay. Big deal. So I think overall college was not the best experience for me. Because it just it is. A tough call. Yeah. We were successful to a point. But I judge success championships net the one hole in my resume. You got a couple of those championships back to back in eighty nine ninety the bad, boys. Detroit a lot of fun to watch that team because they had a different style. And you guys played the style that intimidated some of these teams that were pretty much more offense minded than defensive-minded. You guys had great chemistry. It's a team that when you go back from Chuck Daly, the coach.

"The NCAA tournament. Wow. Was and you know, what I remember when USF was number one with Cartwright and those guys and he played even Notre Dame. They move the USF Notre Dame games to the Coliseum every year. When digger Phelps would bring his teams out and stuff. So do you remember in Vegas just killed USF? Gaylard this great team number one. And then Vegas beat them by like thirty or. Yeah. Or forty in the region, I'll get another memory. I can remember to in warrior post on Camby are and Fitz was holding court talking to like seven hundred Notre Dame grads. I remember that night. I do do. It was like come to a meet and greet with fits grandson questions. And it was like I'm doing post game taking phone calls, and you lose literally seven hundred people sitting right? They got anything plan. Bob for that last night. Oh, yeah. Like a big more than just thank you everybody at the end. Well, the finale shirts for everybody. There's a chance to shoot free throws and take pictures on the court with the championship trophies. I know that I think it's Rick sleepy Floyd. Jason Richardson, number guys are going to be there in the atrium where you can take pictures and stuff Steve's going to dress the crowd after the game is over. And so it's it's gonna they're going to do it the right way, I know on the TV side. I mean, we got like a three and a half minute. Beginning of the broadcast is just kind of the history of the whole building and stuff that they've been working on for a while. So it's going to be it's going to be done, right and it special, and it's an amazing building. And you know, it'll be the regular season finale Sunday. But then, you know, obviously, the perfect world will be two to clinch another title on that floor like did a couple years ago because that that was even more remarkable couple times in Cleveland fine. But the time it did at home was even. Throw this in Stacey fledge twenty nine to win a playoff game against the Lakers twenty nine in the fourth quarter. That's one have Schork over fifty nine there. Well, I think also to Klay sixty in three quarters Rick as a record sixty four in a game. You know, you had Steph at a fifty point game. There clay the thirty seven and a quarter chat wasn't amazing night. That was that was my favorite. I mean, the volume level when Barron dunked on Caroline, go. The clinching game six we believe. Yes. You know, the first eight seat over a one seat. I mean, there was just there. The fans there the warrior people have said it or not, you know, the building is special in the acoustics and the architecture and the remodel the whole bit. But the people dump nation that makes it also special and over seventy percent of those people, plus or move over to San Francisco, so you know, the building itself, but I think in gear, you know, 'cause you're, you know, you grew up in the orchards, and you know. Swam drainage ditches a kid. Thank you is that, you know, there's two baseball teams. So we hear this giant say's? And there's two football team. There's one freaking basketball team. You know? How do I say plus twin how many years on the games? My first game was ninety three. My first game on TV was ninety seven. That's an incredible run, man. I mean that that people say to do an NBA championship team that long. That's that's terrific. Congratulations to you Bob to. That's that's quite an deal. It's not over. I got I got a few more years to go. I wasn't retiring. Why you gotta move off the stage like that fits off. I would never go to some of that low stuff for its brings up my age. But anyway, I wasn't Seger. This is where I love you. You mentioned the final four nineteen sixty you went to and all that. And I have class enough not to say where you fifteen that year when you went. I mean, I don't care what you say on the air. I don't care what the tweets are. It's what you had in your head at the time. And I knew exactly what it was. See I in honor of the other day. Hey, welcome to the Levi's lands. You guys gonna stick with this team? "What are the more intriguing Sundays at we're going to see all year long like you'll have Super Bowl Sunday. Okay. You'll have of opening day, but to me not only because it's sink Patty's day. But just in the fact that we get everything right? Like, we get all of the teams that are going to be sitting there waiting to see if their name is called, and that's one of my favorite traditions. Are this time of year? And in fact, what I wanna do is the selection special has come into this, huge huge orbit, right? Where they'll have the live footage of the teams. But now over the last couple of years we've shown everybody's feelings get hurt. So we don't do it anymore. I want to bring that back. I want every single bubble team to have. All right. I want every single bubble team to have the cameras on them to see whether or not they get in. I wanna see the agony of defeat. The thrill of victory. Joy, Gordon joining us because you know, that right? Like, this is this is when you are nervous as a college basketball fan to find out when your name does or does not get called a little bit later today. Yeah. This is the good kind of nervous for some of the college coaches as opposed to some of the nervousness that somebody's college coaches are dealing with currently in the landscape. That's a conversation. We'll get into later on in the show. But Peter, no question. I mean, I've been on both sides of this thing is a former player for Notre Dame back in two thousand one or two thousand five hundred Mike brain the beginning of his career before he stands where he does now is a winningest coach in Notre Dame basketball history. Surpassing digger Phelps, but my freshman season we were a bubble team. But we did enough down the stretch at the end of the season where we're comfortably watching. We had family and friends at coach brace house. It was just a matter of what seed we'd get ultimately we were in eighth seed my next season. We had a fantastic year. Notre Dame soul. Ourselves ride in the top ten for the better part of the year. We had no worries on selection Sunday, we found ourselves as a five seat the Sweet Sixteen my junior and senior year though, or things that I'm still dealing with working through by mid to late thirties now because we were consecutive seasons as an upperclassman the last team left out. So we went into Sunday Peter watching hoping pray that there wouldn't be any bid Steelers down the stretch Emmys conference tournaments, and we'd find our way. And if you ask me today, which you are I'm still very upset that we were left out. And that's a feeling you never get over his we we talk about that. A lot George Burns here on the best. We ever we talk about that on on whether Lott, athletes and teams and players and even sports fans. They remember the highest moments. Are they remembered the lowest moments right always wonder if they remembered the sports scars, so. For these teams that are going to go through today or the fans that are are patiently waiting to see what the selection committee says later, do you remember your name being selected more that first year or your name not being selected both at junior and senior season. Well, I kind of look at it. As like, you know, everybody's, you know, for those who are who are now happily married and have kids and in that position. It's a different story. But to the person who's still single and a look back on their life their dating life, and why they stayed where they do today. Do they better remember, Peter the woman that broke their heart? And why then the position they are. Or do you think about all the great relationships that they had and they just didn't work out for whatever reason, you tend to think about the one that ended so badly like if I ever see her walking down the street him and tell her how much I hate her what she's done to me and vice versa for a woman who's been impacted by man to me. That's how it's been like when I think back in my college career, and I was lucky to achieve some some some some success measured. Depending on who you talk to. But was able to leave as the all time leading shot blocker Notre Dame history. Brag about it. Tom. Comes off relatively easily. But yeah, that's something. But when I look back on the most it could talk about for the next two hours. Is that feeling I felt we got left out of the tournament. It's a tough one. And you watch the emotion on some of these teams that no when they lose that last game in the conference tournament. They kind of see the writing on the wall Indiana is not going back to Bloomington excited for today. At seventeen and fifteen and team has twelve of thirteen games at a mid point in the season to justify deserve to be in over say a Belmont. And you look at Belmont. And what twenty six and five is we start breaking down the bracket here on this election, Sunday special, basically, Peter burns, Jordan cornet here. You can tweet us on the one eight hundred flowers dot com Twitter feed at Peter burns ESPN at Jordan coordinate because these are the teams right as much as we want to talk about it. We know and there'll be a lot of talk about which one of the number one who gets the number one seed, right? And there's probably L there might be three ACC teams that are going to be right on that on that number one bubble. But to me, it's the bubble that makes more sense. And I'll be honest with you. I I don't know anything about Belmont right favorite time of year. And I know you were doing this over not necessarily you. But people did this over at CBS. We do it at ESPN. You do it at Yahoo sports. We do it everywhere that everyone becomes a NC double a basketball expert for like three days or they read all the capsules. And when they're filling out there bracket, Belmont twenty six and five. I mean, they gotta be in. And then you're talking about Indiana, who what you're saying what twelve out of thirteen I pull for the the Belmont of the world. I mean, this is the week in which even television wants the Belmont of the world to get in. Because we're looking for the next Loyola Chicago, we want the next sister Jean we want the next Cinderella story. And and that's I think the purity of college basketball, and there's not a lot of things Jordan that we can actually say that are pure about this word of college basketball. So we sit here currently in twenty nineteen looking at not one not two, but probably three federal trials that are going to change everything in the way that we view this sport. Oh, yeah. No question. And that is the elephant in the room that is going to be something that looms large throughout coverage in March. Unfortunately for two people in me, and you the love this sport so much to understand that that is a part of this. It's gotta be. Taken with it. But you know, looking at a Belmont. It's so funny, man. Sweet. We've added a first four we've taken this thing. The Dayton we've increased a field, and there's talk to increase it, even more. But yet still here we are mired in the same issue. Do you take the the smaller schools who have the better win loss record but had been challenged? Or do we take the big dogs whose records are looming around five hundred but more impressive wins? Look belmont. They've beaten Murray state who's an attorney John Moran who I can't wait to watch. Yeah. They beat UCLA whose terrible terrible. But who has a very good, and they beat Lipscomb those wins at Belmont gonna hang their hat on. They've lost to Jacksonville state. They've lost to Green Bay and they didn't win their conference tournament. So if you're Indiana, you say we swept Michigan state we've done this. We've done that. How do you argue that what what's the right answer in your opinion? Peter. There's no doubt to me the right answer for the NCAA committee. Is you give me as many underdogs as possible? Now, we're gonna talk to Greg sheen who Shaheen who is was part of that into AA committee. Right. He was part of the whole executive director of basketball who put this this tournament together. He'll join us in about an hour and twenty because that's what I want the committee to do. Honestly wanna see them put every single underdog. That's available. And that's thinks the teams like Indiana thinks that teams like Alabama's stinks to the bigger squads. But I look at this year in RBIs. Intrigued about this NCAA tournament as I have been in. I don't know. Maybe maybe ten years Jordan, who's your team just for just for those out there wondering who who do you root for go Tigers LSU, I'm born and raised. Listen, we need seven hours to unpack everything about what's happened with LSU basketball. But what I mean by that is that I've got Duke I've gotten North Carolina. Tennessee, Kentucky Virginia Villanova ATI. All the great names. I got enough of the star power and the NC double late-term it already. Give me the Belmont. Gimme the next Loyola Chicago's of it. And that's what I want. If you're in the incidental a committee, and you're driving to the conference room in which you're picking off your spreadsheets today. Do us all favor here at ESPN radio. Peter Vernon Jordan cornet we just want the underdogs. That's what we want. All right. There's no sense in not talking about this Zion. Williamson is no underdog, and I will tell you coming up why the whole knee in shoe issue was by far the best thing that ever happened to him.
