Somebody from the family was there. Twenty four hours a day trying to will met back from the brink somehow in the fall of nineteen ninety-six. He finally was brought home to the reservation. And that's where he's been ever since chris. You wet the chance to meet with manly job and you spoke to him in two thousand eighteen when you reporting this piece. Matt was forty two years old at that time it had been twenty two years since he collapsed on the field when you sat down with them three years ago. Now how is matt doing. It's self evident that that let shop a certainly has limited ability to communicate and limited ability for movement. He is woken up in the morning and given a shower his family will feed him breakfast meat potatoes and eggs. That sound good. He uses a wheelchair to get from his bed to the table. He has only short term. Memory it seems like for the most part. He won't remember what he said for. Breakfast is what evil his brother told us. It's obviously been a devastating thing that his body has been through and yet despite everything that he's had to endure he has this amazing smile. He can convey things. Like i love you and thank you matt. How're you and he has his own crushing hug. That members of his family all comment on as being a really life-affirming over the last two decades chris matt's medical condition has not changed. What's his day to day life like. Well he's you know he's looked after there's a feeding tube to help him. You know consume food. He also gets food being made for him by his family and by people come in to help. There's a regular battery of doctors. Visits daily medicines their muscle relaxers to check his spasms. There's a beta-blocker that's trying to prevent abnormal heart rhythms. There's all sorts of new supplies of medical stuff you know. There's a lot of treatment and looking after him that goes on and the family plays a huge role in that. But it's also a very you know there's a lot of expensive stuff that goes into taking care of matla chopper. All of the medical care that you've described the cost of it. It reaches into the millions of dollars house. The chop family able to afford all of it. The truth is they wouldn't be able to. I don't think any family would be able to pay all the money. That matla chop is care has cost over the years so it all goes back to that conversation that was held on the day that he signed with the padres organization. The conversation his late mother had with priscilla oppenheimer. His mom said any that day. I want you to take care of him. And i said don't worry. I will in priscilla's remembrance. She's the first mother who ever said to me. You take care of myself. And she and the padres prove they would live up to that promise because that much has been under contract to the padres organization all this time every year at this time in february a contract is sent out from the padres offices to matla chop matla ciampa then signs his contract and what that means is the donnelley's he part of the padres organization. He's also on the insurance and the insurance has helped to pay for all the expensive care that met Chop has received these many years. So matlab shop has not played baseball and a quarter century at this point.

I okay and then i shall come again and the right. The news gone. It's just beyond imagining. He seems to have away for reasons that nobody can possibly understand. After a bit of a delay there is a an ambulance that comes on the field and drives him to the hospital. Once the family gets to the hospital there eventually told that matt has gone without oxygen in his brain for two minutes and that his outlook appears to not be very good at all. What was matt's diagnosis. As they understood it. They said he had gone into cardiac arrest at the hospital. He was diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy and that his weakened heart was unable to pump blood. Which as you might imagine is a condition that is not often found in the league. Twenty year old pitchers and it was shocking to the padres organization. No less than it was to the family. Because priscilla oppenheimer had made sure that electrocardiogram had been done on everybody spring training. It wasn't supposed to happen but now matlock ciampa twenty years old was in a coma and there was no telling when he might come out of so he has this viral infection of his heart..

"They go and sign his contract. Who did they meet their well. We spoke with priscilla oppenheimer who was padres farm director back. Then and she had signed so many prospects in those days and certainly was no stranger to the signing ceremonies. She said she'd never seen anything like we're coming into the office. So i set up the conference room and all my god here comes the whole tribe. You know coming down the hall. So they're in the presence of his family and friends and priscilla oppenheimer of the san. Diego padres matla. Ciampa signed his first contract with the padres at the outset of what looked to be the most promising career. It was a thrilling moment. Not just for him and for his family but for priscilla oppenheimer to see all the excitement and anticipation that went into that moment. It was something that she never forgot and what happened. That day was matt's mother. Linda ciampa taking her assign amid all the excitement. Enthusiasm of the signing and linda ciampa looks at priscilla and says to her. I want you to take care of him. And i said don't worry i will want you to take care of him. Don't worry i will. Then that exchange would always remain in the minds of the people reported before mad could play in the big leagues chris. He ends up. I in the arizona rookie league and in ninety five. He goes up to the class. Say rancho cucamonga quakes. They're located about two hundred miles north of the borana reservation. How is performing as a player at this time. So in nineteen ninety-five matt won. Eleven games for the rancho cucamonga quakes. And he was looking forward to an even bigger year in nineteen ninety six. Taking place in baseball pretty much all the time we just saw the cubs for instance ship all of their world series winning stars outta town but a few years ago. You reported this story. "Once you're inspired you can bend time again right. Nothing seems bad when you're inspired. This is entrepreneurs the playbook probably most people's they don't i look for the inspiration and what they're doing they. They have got to do attitude. I get to do attitude so very subtle switches in your life. Our perspective control of your perspective controls the amount of juice that you can gather from the universe and when you start thinking about the wise of what you're doing in the house of what you're doing so i can take simple things like taking out the trash picking up my kids from school things that other people would you know especially in the position. I'm in law. You know like. I just was with the king of so and so now you gotta take the trash out which is early in my life kind of my attitude and once i started looking at things differently. Say okay if i don't feel inspired why why try to do anything if your sales rep for example. This is what killed me. I ran big sales forces. I would tell my sales reps. And he's like man. I'm gonna funk everyone knows answering or everyone's saying no everyone that's been sale has felt that i'm like stop. Just stop. stop calling. You're killing your blocking your kid well. I think that's what you're doing in life if you're not inspired. You're killing your pipeline. You're killing your future road. So what's the first thing they go somewhere that inspires you. I rather one of my sales guys. Go take the day off. Go to disneyland where you know one of the greatest places on earth for energy. I don't care who you are. You feel it. You walk into disneyland curious do you. Are you feel it. Go there because once you're inspired you can bend time again like nothing seems bad. When you're inspired. I have lived the same life in one day. Sixty times what does that mean. I've lived my life. It's the same day the exact same past maybe a little incremental difference in my pass from the fifty one years but the same day sixty times. Meaning i'm like in my head Been this right. But all of a sudden i then stop i go to disneyland mentally right and i figure out what is it. That's gonna inspire me. what am i doing. That's why being of service is so important because it's an easy thing to go through saying. Who am i helping here right. Who am i helping by taking out the trash in my house. That's a little bit of inspiration. Now what else can i do with that time like i start thinking about what makes me happy or i could think about a new idea to make money or you know i could know. Walk the trash out with two cayennes and get my knees and get some exercise. who knows. there's a ton of different inspiring things you can do with the dumbest activities if you think about life in the in the form of activity that in linear time frame we have twenty four hours and that there's just activity during that twenty four hours. There's no work and there's no play there's activities that you get paid for and activities you don't get paid for you get activities that increase your health. You have activities that decrease your health. I believe twenty four hours of activity. I'm supposed to be a productive in accessible as possible. Some of the activities. I do i get paid for so i don't get paid for some of the things i get paid for other people. Pay me to do and the same jew of other people. I'd pay you know a joke around. I paid money to be the second baseman. San diego padres. Just one game. I pay money just to do that. And i know that guy spent a ton. And i know some of the things i get to do. People are like you're kidding. Get paid to do that. So there's just activity. How some of that. I get paid somebody but all activities for the benefit of other people and for and i know doing that it all. I just have to be clear. Balance and focused on what i want to because we're connected so if i go out and be of and don't know what i want then i'm just going to get the random thoughts and random actions that i have put out there but when i asked big and think about you know okay. This is what i want this. Why why i want it. And this is how. I'm going to receive it in. Receivership is so important. Because i'm like an escrow account right when everything was happening for me. I wasn't big enough to hold it off. But when things happened in receivership for everyone my best will get bigger and bigger and bigger and more comes through me more and more and that's where all the books. tv shows movies successful business modules. If media all the things that we do podcasts. All right it all it's coming through me and and for me. It was like. Oh you're so busy as that's funny because i don't feel it. I feel more inspired. I have more activity right more productive accessible to me. Everybody has twenty four hours of activity. You sleep twelve hours a day. that's an activity. Well i just have you know all this different activity. But i still have the same time activity. It's just a more productive accessible during the activity. And i'm able to get paid more for my activity which allows me what to give more away then. What is better for me. Here's the biggest problem that we have in everything we do is that we can go ten years in adventure and be twenty five percent of the way there. We start putting faith and what. Everybody else thinks that we're not successful that we're wasting our time. Never should have dropped out of harvard. All the different things. But if i'm focused in on and this is what this person should do focusing on are you accelerating and growing at what piece. Mice accelerating roy. Because here's what happens. You're twenty years old by the time you're thirty everybody's against you and you're only twenty five percent of the way there but you've grown in accelerated to get there we'll at the same pace most people within five years we'll be fifty percent of the way there would ninety nine percent of the people are going to quit in ten years out of that one percent that hang on the next five years another ninety nine percent of those will quit and at thirty five years old. Ev you're putting faith in what everybody else thinks. Here's the saddest thing at the same acceleration in exponential growth. You're only two and a half years for being one hundred percent away there where everyone thinks you're lucky then. Nearly a year and three quarters from being two hundred percent. Then you're half of that from four hundred half of that from eight hundred. That's how jeff bezos twenty five years ago. Almost to the date was in a garage telling people that i'm going to have a bookstore online. And we worth over one hundred billion dollars and be the most powerful person in the world. Because i own the world marketplace. Now let's be honest. I'm an optimist. If jeff woulda told me twenty five years ago from his garage. I would've never believed him. But all he was focused on was acceleration in growth consistency. Mindset who you surround yourself with. It's like the same shit over and over again in different ways i would say ranger mindset. Don't change your mindset range your mindset. It's like furniture if you arrange your furniture the way. You're going to have efficiency effectiveness and statistical success in your room. You're gonna feel comfortable and good. Arrange your mindset. Yeah that's all you gotta do is take the time to say. My mind is like furniture. I'm going to arrange it every day to make sure that i feel comfortable in the room and is practical and has a good workflow and all the different things that we do..

"Time for another round with Tolbert, Kruger and Brooks on pay NPR 1045 and 6 80, ft sports leader. That's um Here's an interesting bit of news that doesn't Involved the Giants, but I'd say it. Be of interest to them. San Diego Padres are having themselves a little covert 19 issue. Jurickson pro far and Jorge Matteo. Were placed on the injured list is part of contract tracing protocol. I'm saving the big name for last Fernando Ted Teeth. Junior has tested positive for covert 19. He's on the ill due to health and safety protocols. He is symptom free. He's got to go through the old 10 days of isolation thing and stay symptomatic throughout that period, but Padres. Dream season is not necessarily starting up that way in. Isn't that a shame? That's what l A too. That's right. Or just Thinking other own way. The Dodgers have missed Cody Bellenger. I think he's coming back like I don't know. In a week or two, maybe Maybe sooner than that, so that that should help them quite a bit. They struggled. It is. It's Tigers of Dodgers will be fine. I've no doubt we're going to get 90 plus games. Padre should never know because they They're supposed to be good. And they're young. And they got arms. But they haven't done it before. The divers have done so that I mean Dodgers will figure this would be shocked if they didn't win 90 games. Plus, uh, but the Padres, you never know. I mean, they certainly have the town to do it. There's no doubt but we've seen teams that have talent that for whatever reason, I just can't get it. Get out of their own way or stuff like this happens like just stuff. You don't expect it stuff That's not even their fault. Just just happens and I mean, the Padres, who knows I suspect they'll be there. I mean that one of the best teams in baseball when they're really talented, but You know, until you see somebody do it. You're not sure? They could do it. I mean, who knows what the Dodgers you have Belen Juro help And look they they had enough talent to go 13 2 without Bellenger, So just I don't know what it is, And I guess I guess the best way to say it is it's just baseball. And teams go through this and some go through to the beginning the years about the middle of the years and go through the end of the year, But I mean, that's a team. You look at it boring injuries, a lot of them. It is. It's hard for me to even imagine That team that went in 90 games. At least We know they're gonna win 90. The question is is far on all in on this season. Another giant's gonna win 90 or are the Giants all in on? Next season. They've set up a situation where far on is going to be the man in in the game in July, Scott you know the Giants are one of the hottest teams or one of the surprise teams. And if you want disco funny if you want Gausman if you want wood, if you want Cueto, if you want, there's a lot of guys at the end of their deals that other teams will find attractive and we'll give you something for if you want to go that route, I couldn't imagine worse to the other route. You know if they're still in first or around first and in the wild card mix, then sell it. Was the last time you've been to the playoffs five years. Yeah, they're not while 14. Absolutely not. If there is a chance for if they're playing this type of baseball in July, they're definitely not selling. But if they fall back just a little bit, But they're still within striking distance of winning the division. If the Padres and the Dodgers don't get traction and take off And in the wild card should play then selling absolutely not. No, no, fam pays me. No way. Thank you Do that to the players. Very picky. Exactly. But families have been so patient. Yeah, you like. Are you serious? Really? It's gonna be super intriguing this year because they're gonna have guys. I mean, Kevin Gausman is very, very attractive and he's attracted to them. Obviously, too. They brought him back. But It's not like past years where they got a guy, but he's like the fifth or sixth most coveted guy they may have. If what keeps doing his thing, they may have a couple of the most coveted starting pitcher arms, and they may get faced with some very attractive offers its gonna get those arms or what are keeping them have them in first place now and may keep them in or around first place. When we get to July and we're talking about the trade deadline if they have a chance. But they ain't selling now, but it's gonna have to be the offer of all offers. They ain't selling. No way. Yeah, the problem. You don't get the offer all offers anymore. I didn't know. Yeah, that's true. You know, you don't get that mean Nobody can prove they're dead now. So the hard question the other one is gonna be the other hard question is what if you can't the likely Here's the likely question. They're not going to be able to keep up with the Padres and Dodgers, because we know those teams are better. Um and they get to the middle of the summer. And do you trade one of these great young guys that they have the kid from day LaSalle or mottoes or Ramos or Luciano or Bishop? They've got a lot of guys who can give you a pretty nice looking glimpse of the future. If you look at some of the highlights, and other teams are gonna want to go that route and trying to add a Mac shirts or in July one No, not for mashers. Er, try only way the only way you get rid of one of those guys. Is if you get somebody who you have under control for, like three years there, not trading for do not trade in their young guys. I mean, there's so damn close for the pillows, young guys starting to come and where you know bigly uniforms and playing for the Big League fans. There's no way in hell. They're trading those guys for for for guided here for a year or an older ballplayer. I mean, you have to be a younger ballplayer who's maybe a little older than those guys but a controllable asset. For a number of years. I just can't see now. That doesn't mean they wouldn't You.

"So we're going to rewind back last august when the padres and the rangers were playing each other home and home series between the san diego padres abbott taxes ranger and see eighth-inning. Thanks very much guys as we move along here to the eighth inning one. The cossio takes over for texas. The padres are up by seven runs and bases are loaded. that is all four and another walk. This sitting nicasio second. This will load the bases for the padre fernando tatis junior who's one of baseball's brightest young stars. He comes up to the plate and he works a three count now traditionally in baseball. You're supposed to not swing in the situation because it could be interpreted as trying to run up the score especially with the padres by seven runs and taty manager jayce tingler basically send them assigned to lay off the next pitch but tattoo doesn't see the sign and he crushes the ball out of the ballpark. This is to right. Field back at goes mando has done it again. Touchy junior grand slam. Hits a grand slam and so what happens after that is basically pretty familiar to a lot of baseball fans which is tattoos being the center of criticism for violating the unwritten rules of trying to run up the score. I didn't like it personally. we're up by seven and eighth innings typically not a good time to swing through and then something weird started happening which. I hadn't seen a lot in baseball. Culture in general was that people really came out in full force and start defending him. This is professional baseball. You've played at the end of this whole thing. I think you gotta keep in mind. Is the players. Game is a junior is not a child so stop demanding to be treated with kid gloves. It's time to get out of your feelings. Baseball boomers and it wasn't just media members. It

"It's one of the many vaccinations sites administering covert 19 vaccines and community statewide. Scott Baba has the story. Petco Park Vaccinations. Superstation was the first covert 19 mass vaccination site to be set up in the state. Opened on January 11th at the home of baseball's San Diego Padres. State health officials said. The station vaccinates roughly 5000 people a day and has vaccinated over 100,000 people since it opened. That's roughly a third of San Diego's total vaccinations. It's a partnership between the county of San Diego, the city of San Diego, U C. San Diego Health and the San Diego Padres. Newsome said that he wanted to commend San Diego for leading the way on mass vaccinations. Mean focus now on why I came here to San Diego, and that was to acknowledge leadership, Monster ball leadership leadership that now is truly leading. The state of California, San Diego, the first county first city to put a site together like this success leaves clues. You inspired others, all throughout the state of California. Newsome said. That could coronavirus numbers show that the state is moving in the right direction. Lots more work needs to be done. Today. We have just over 10,000 new cases. Now I want to put that in perspective one month ago on January 8th We had over 50,000 cases 10,000 cases today. One month ago today on January 8th we had a 14% positivity rate today, 5.0. 34% reduction over two week period and the number of people hospitalized and 25% reduction of the number of people and I see youse so everything that should be up is up. Everything that should be down is down. That is encouraging. News indeed. The governor said the latest vaccination right numbers show that a lot of progress could be made in a short amount of time. We are not naive about our responsibility here in the state of California to move these vaccines out of the freezers and into people's arms so far in the state of California 4.65 million people. Been administered a dose of the vaccine. We want to get these numbers up, but I should just make this point Yesterday we reported 197,000 vaccines administered. That's double. Where we were just a few weeks ago. Triple where we were a month or so ago, So we're making progress. We're proving the rate of administration day in and day out. Newsome acknowledge that there has been mixed messaging about who is eligible to receive the vaccines. And said that his office has been working with the state Legislature on clarifying rules regarding vaccine prioritization. He said. Different communities have different capacities and different needs. In each and every county..
