"So Jim, let's jump right back into it. We got Tony Atlas coming in in the Butch Reed spot. I know you had a lot of history with Butch, but what did you think of Tony Atlas? Taking a run here. Nice guy, great body. It's time to come. Yeah. And I don't know how to say it that being coarse or negative. I mean, Tony was a great attraction at one time. There's no doubt. He drew a lot of money. But I think those days have passed it. Right. But again, go cowboy went back to that law. Well, we have Butch coming in. He's a big muscular black man. How do we solve this issue? Oh, I know. It's just found another big muscular black man and hiring. Yeah. And that's not always as I said earlier. That's not always the solution. I don't recall that work it too often. You try to clone somebody. No. Session today's world fans are too smart. And they know what they want. And I think that's a good thing. Well, what we did was, as we want a Greg Valentine to do the job for sting, he walks out on Monday at 4 o'clock rather than doing that job for staying. Quote, it isn't the Valentine refused to do the job as much as he got the new booking sheet and saw his name wasn't on it for any of the dates. So he decided why do the job when it appeared he was finished up either way, and Meltzer would say, dick slater will also be gone within a few weeks. Boy, that feels like a tactical error. Hey, you're not booked, but why don't you go lose on TV? Well, maybe we tell him he's not booked after he loses on TV. Just thinking out loud here. Yeah, probably in hindsight, I testify the exact solution. But to be honest with you, add Valentine and slater's days come and gone. Of course. Yes. So did we lose hey look, those guys are Hall of Fame level guys. Long career, all that stuff. I'm not knocking them at all. To the toughest guys in wrestling over the years. Of course, the slater had that Eddie Graham education, which is hard to replicate as a matter of fact, impossible. And watch like Dickie slater was lots of Booker at one time. Yeah. And he brought in dark journey and that was a revolutionary for a white guy to show affection to a black woman or a black woman so effected to a white guy, it just wasn't today. It's nothing, not a big deal. Nothing. Which is good. Yes. Quite frankly. This later and cowboy collaborated on that deal and it was a bold move. But I think, you know, in all due respect, the late dicky slater, his best days were behind him. And cowboys just trying to get guys that he was familiar with and, you know, my theory has always been and part of cowboys too. You got to have some of these veterans on your roster that can help teach the younger guys. Slow down, not now, whatever. You know, this type of communications. And that's kind of what I think watches logic was. I can't think of anything. He's not going to rejuvenate. He didn't have a fountain of youth. And that's kind of what how I looked at it is that, you know, I like both guys. You knew that when they're on their game, they could have a great match with anybody they wanted to, but those were lessening. And so I don't know how big the deal that was that the hammer left. He didn't want to be there, obviously. You know, nobody wants to sit down and communicate. They just want to sit down and confront. And that shit just don't work, and assert it does work in today's world. Well, I'll tell you what else is a little interesting, it's hard for me to wrap my head around how this company is having trouble with maybe we've got our lowest ratings in 20 years. We're doing so poorly at the houses were canceling shows. But then we get to Halloween havoc. And it actually is a financial success. By comparison, the great American bass show did 80,000 buys on pay per view. This show does a 140,000 buys, that's unbelievable. Meltzer would say this. Things are really bad. It's not just Halloween havoc. It's not just TV ratings hitting record lows. It's not just WWF canceling house shows left and right. It's not just WCW not canceling house shows, but not drawing any fans. What's bad is, the wrestling business is in tunnel and there's no sign a lie at the end. WCW is in a state of systematic destruction, real wrestling talent is being exchanged with talent that doesn't have the experience or seasoning or in some cases even the talent to hang in a major league organization. He would continue, Halloween havoc wasn't the worst pay per view in history, although it was amongst the worst. The WWF has put on shows that were terrible from start to finish. Two of them were WrestleManias. This show was only terrible from the middle to the finish. The first half was actually good. Either way, he's talking about how he doesn't think, even though this show did a decent number of buys, it's just not sustainable. We're going to talk about the pay per view itself, but man, there's some mixed messaging here. Is it not where on the one hand, things are down, houses are down, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. But then we're doing almost twice the bonds we did for the big pay per view earlier in the year. That's hard for me to wrap my head around. Well, we finally had something they wanted to see. The Halloween havoc concept and the gimmick Ness of it. Apparently was intriguing enough to the audience to give it a shot. Same roster, same guys. This moved around different places. Right. That's the art of good bookie. You find the role that your talent are best suited to do, and you give that put them in a game. Run the plays that they are good at. So it was a, it was just a, I think the gimmick, the Halloween havoc theme, probably did as much to help us that show as anything. Curiosity, bottom line. Let's talk about the house. We got 7000 fans here. 80,000 is roughly what the house is. Meltzer would say it's very similar to what the WWF drew with the spectrum, the previous weekend. It's the largest gate of the year for WCW up to this point. It was war games down in Jacksonville that did $72,000 and we get started with Tom zinc and Shane Douglas and Johnny Gunn and a 6 man taken on arn Anderson Bobby Eaton and Michael Hayes. It gets two and a half stars, the Meltzer hates not in the peltzer, but the crowd hates the finish according to Meltzer. He would call it a well paced opener and really the four guys who could work dominated the time, but there was nothing spectacular or out of ordinary for the match. Gunn made the hot tag and they did a 6 way before hitting the finish. So you got some talented guys in there, aren't Anderson Bobby Eaton, Shane Douglas, there's some real talent in there. But this just kind of feels thrown together for me. Of course, Johnny gun, for some of our younger listeners, is the future Salvatore sincere, he would see as an enhancement talent on the WWF. All right. But you got, listen, this is the frustrating thing about WCW in this era. Maybe it's not the best presentation, but boy you got some good talent in there. Yeah. I thought so. I agree with you. The thing about you said that the regarding the match, the match had

"You know, hell, he just, he worked on the card all summer. So, and it was a good show. As we will see and talk about a real good show. So I'm anxious to get started with it and go back. I haven't seen any clip or any frame of video since I did the show. Okay. So it's all new to me again. So it's going to be kind of cool. That's exactly how we like it JR. And listen, first of all, so good to hear that they're continuing to try to work with you, find the right medicine, find the right remedy for your leg, man. So just continued encouragement from us from all your fans, unless yours. Everybody's saying great, Paul. Really, everybody's been great. They've helped me. In spirit, I'm better at veteran healing than I am working a slight thing as you can see I look like I'm sitting in the shade. I don't know, and I don't know how to fix it. So it's okay. Listen, don't worry to the majority of our listeners, listen to the show, so it's okay. We'll figure the light out later. Don't worry about it. Let's jump in though. You said it smokey mountain. We're going back to 94 August 13th. It's the night of the legends, and so I thought JR what we do is kind of level set for the audience, bring them up to speed, a little bit about smoky mountain, not everybody may be familiar with smoky mountain wrestling. Jim cornette forms smoky mountain. The promotion in October and 91, he oversaw the company until it closed its doors in December and 95 around that time, Jim would transition full time into a role with WWF, but the promotion was based mostly in Knoxville, Tennessee. Their offices were in Morristown, Tennessee, and during their run, Jim had done a little cross promotion. He worked with WCW in early 93, and then when he joined the WWF later that summer, he started a relationship with them, we've all known that cornette's wrestling traditionalist. And he's catered to fans who still believe in good guys and bad guys, and cheating was still a reason to get upset. Who was their play by play announcer on the TV program, he would also proclaim at the beginning of every show, JR, that smoky mountain wrestling was professional wrestling the way it used to be and the way you like it. So buddy, that's what we're here to talk about. We're going to watch that special episode where you make your debut for smoky mountain at the night of legends. It is August 13th, 94. And so if you want to watch along with us, you can absolutely do so. You can fire up peacock as with most of the footage WWE owns it so you're going to find it on peacock. Look for territories. Look for smoky mountain. And you want to find season three episode 33. So if you want to go ahead and do that, pause the show. We're going to get started here shortly. But again, it's smoky mountain wrestling, fire up season three, episode 33, and JR, we're going to go ahead and get started, and we're going to we're going to play the music and also let the audio track a little bit because we start right off the bat with you unless Thatcher in the ring, this was taped at the Knoxville civic coliseum on all of the 5th and then it goes to you. So we're going to listen a little bit of that. So let's go ahead and get started. Let's roll. Looking forward to it. I look pretty good in the dark. The show's got a lot of mid Southfield. It does, doesn't it? Just to open her. Yeah. Hello, welcome to everybody and welcome. The smoky mountain wrestling, a night of legends. We are in the nostrils to the coliseum, our capacity crowd on hand. I'm Jim Ross and as a wrestling fan, I wouldn't have missed this event for the world, and I'm certainly honored to have a great wrestling legend less Thatcher here with us tonight as my broadcast colleague. Last this is going to be a very special night. Jim is certainly is and is you're going to hear about the electricity in the air. This is the greatest night in Knoxville wrestling history. We're all happy. The fans and myself to have you on the mic with us tonight for this momentous occasion. And without further ado, let's let it roll. Let's let it roll. Let's get started. We'll be back with all the accidents, just a moment. All right. Here you go. You all tonight's all of tonight's action, but since our TV time is limited, you're going to see some of the high points of the evening. So let's go to the footage of the legends tag match. Dick slater and bob Orton junior take on Ronnie Garvin and the Mongolian stomper already in progress. Pass it on. So we'll need to hear that we're getting into the match as he said Ron Garvin and man, here we go. Ron Garvin with the dark hair, no longer the blond that we saw in WCW or NWA and the WWF. Yeah. This is the night of legends, buddy. Here we go. Yeah, and of course, you can go back in the annals of Knoxville, the territory, and these guys in the ring right now is, they had amazing runs in Knoxville. And the fans certainly were excited to see the congregate again.

"Instead of using their God given skills, their physicality and all those things to their benefit, they worry about how they're going to look to others, including their peers, if they lose a match. Everybody loses a match. Everybody loses a match. I mean, God almighty. Nobody was ever going to lose have been Goldberg. Right, right? I mean, I don't know what it was that his record, a hundred and something wins. Or something like that. Yeah, so crazy ass number. I mean, the reality is, you know, it is probably a little different for an amateur wrestler because as an amateur wrestler, you're like, you never want to be on your back. Never. And they're not comfortable. They're not comfortable working off their back and pro wrestling match. Right. They're not comfortable lying. I don't want to say dormant, but somewhat still in when they're on the bottom. Because they've been taught all their life, just their little farts. That they, you got to get off your back because it was just what count you're done. So on the back is a big deal. It's a good point. And with the artists selling for some reason and still even today, Conrad, I see guys that have a hard time selling. Because they perceive that it makes them look weak. And same concept, I'm sorry. Same concepts about the favorite. Also to kill me to lose. And you're not very good at what you do. Are you? Right. God damn. You're not very good at what you did. You really aren't. I read a stat the other day that nobody has more losses on the main roster this year than Seth Rollins. He's pretty top guy over there. What do you think? Hell yeah. Doing just fine. He's getting over as much as his wife. Alex has this to say, I'd like to hear JR talk about the process of recruiting college athletes and particularly what it's like negotiating with athletes who have a variety of other options. If pro wrestling is not the athlete's first choice, do they sell them on the wrestling business or just move on? Well, I think they settle more. I think we've sold them on what they could earn, being in the wrestling business. Right. This is a job. This is a full-time job. And you can call zip recruiter or anybody else you want. You can put your name out there and hinder lands, however you want to do it. But this is a job interview. Going to a camp or going to OVW today was a job interview. So that's what this is. Convincing them, this is not fun and games. And we're going to work out for three hours a day or something. And then we're going to sweep up. We're all going to do all this grunt work. Then we're going to go about our merry way with our free time. It's not what it's all about. I was going to do this again tomorrow. And the day after, and three months ago now, because we have no off season. You're always going to be always going to be a practice. Unless you hurt. So. The expectations because the guys read are agency to do the research. They see what talents are allegedly earning Conrad. And, you know, if you want to see how guys facial expression is and he's lying, talk to him about money. Yeah. Because they're all making more than they all say they're making more than they actually are, especially if they're negotiating or talking to other peers about what's the next material possession I'm going to buy. You can only buy so many sets of moves for your girlfriends. Well, maybe we'll put that to the test one day here on the show. But next week, we're going to be talking about WCW Saturday night. A really cool episode from 1992, Ron Simmons is going to replace staying for a world title match against Vader. Jake Roberts is going to debut he's going to attack sting. Also Dustin Rhodes takes on dick slater, beautiful Bobby, and our Anderson team up George south takes on flying Brian, Vinny Vegas and DDP team up. It's going to be a lot of fun. We'll do it watch a long style. I'm looking forward to watching some 30 year old wrestling with you next week, Jim. It's going to be a good time. Yeah, 30 God is hard to believe. It's so hard to believe. 30 years that a lot of really unique names you just mentioned that we'll talk about the time, I was not readily, I won't be there much longer. For me, as a special time, and I went overtly happy with large I'll take a responsibility for that, rather made it admit when I'm wrong. Our admit when I'm right. But those are always fun. I love those watch longs because you see the most obscure little nuggets that we try to retrieve and present to everybody. So it should be fun. It's going to be a lot of fun and we're going to have a lot of fun this Sunday. I hope you guys will at least check out star cast on fight, it's powered by car shield and they're allowing us to bring you a whole bunch of really fun stuff this weekend. Ric Flair's

"Big Roberts for this. It looks like dark turning is a spray stuff together face. Jake the snake Roberts. It's pandemonium. Jacob. Goodness. Shake the snake. Has just DDT dark journey. As I mentioned, that was Joel watts on color. So Joel and I did that. That was the hot show. That was awesome. And here's the other thing about Jake. He didn't want to do it and how to do it. And the timing was just there. It's like saying, well, could he have done that DDT or dark journey a little earlier? It would be just as effective, probably not. He didn't stay too long. He got his business done and it was effective. You saw the great marketing example of research, shall we say, because the crowd was on their feet, they were jumping up and down. Yeah, they're going crazy. So instead of a real good match, a good serious was slater. Dickie was crazy. But boy, he's the hell of a worker, what he was motivated. So much a can of Terry funk was dick slater that it was kind of frightening at times. I'm not saying Nick slater was better than Terry found because I don't know if anybody in any incarnation was better than Terry funk, quite frankly. But boy, it was something else that was a hot night. It was good. Here's the deal. The angle worked. And it worked because the two talents executed an ad lib. And people take that for granted. Okay. Well, sure. They make it look easy. Especially Jake Roberts makes it look easy. But it wasn't easy. And they're floating by the seat of their pants. And I got all of respect in the world for guys like Jake Roberts. And still do, like I said, I think he's an asset that somebody could utilize for seminars or whatever, because he understands the basic fundamentals of pro wrestling, and unfortunately, that's not the case with everybody. They're not many of those Jake Roberts guys left. So anybody that's not taking advantage of that. It's making a mistake in my opinion. And to your point, you are about the ad lib and feeling the crowd. I mean, even what he was doing with the referee. If you get in front of me, one more time. That was just great. That was Eddie Gilbert's dad, Tommy. Yeah. They star in Memphis or years here, so this is a nice work for cowboy. And then when it's resting days are over, a cowboy medium of referee, Antony was a real good referee. He understood the business. Another guy that we had a lot of our young talents had the luxury of being in the ring with, even though Tommy was in the ring as a referee. We can't even though WWE doesn't still just acknowledge the names of the referees. Yeah. So I don't understand that quite frankly. Officials, they're all officials. I'm not going to go in some tiring about it. Bottom line is, I think if anybody's on your TV show, whether it be a ring announcer like a Justin Roberts or whether it be referees, they're stars. Give them a brand. If you don't position them as somebody special, look, they're working for you. That's right. You put them on television. So why aren't they being recognized? It's the question. I'm with you too. I mean, then think about later on in their career when they want to do an autograph show. If nobody knows their name, what does it matter? At least they have their name. Their brand, and you've helped promote that through the years. You know, you think about the great referees Earl Hebner, Mike chioda, whoever, people know their names. So yes, I want to go see meet him. If you don't know any of the officials, then how do you know their brand or who they are for them in their future too? I don't know. I'm with you. So before we get up on that tangent, so let's talk more about this mid south run. This was red hot, the territory was crazy. By the way, for those that didn't see the video, Jim Ross is full tux tuxedo in the middle of the ring for that whole exchange, as I said, you're just woven throughout Jake's career. Tell us a little bit about the heat with Jake and Bill watts when he left the territory. Well, not unlike a lot of guys, you know, it's either about cash or creative. You know, overanalyze the shit out. This doesn't matter. But generally speaking, one wrestlers leave a territory and it's acrimonious. It has to do with one of the two seas. Cash or creative or both. So I think that's where that was. I don't think it was anything really extraordinarily unique or different. But the other thing too is that Bill realized that Jake was not the average bear. He was smart. And probably would have been a hell of a Booker. But, you know, it's not how the car at the hand was played. But I don't think anything all out of the ordinary for those two guys. Okay. A cowboy was going to do it his way, and Jake on his way was the right way. And Jake may have been absolutely spot on. But I don't think it's extraordinarily unique, quite frankly. Cash had created pretty well cover those answers. Gotcha. Well, it moves Jake moves forward and it moves forward in a big way for him, JR, because he gets his big break that he's been looking for, joining the WWF in 1986. He already had the snake moniker for several years at this point, but this is one start bringing in the actual snake with him to the ring too. So what did you think about this whole twist in dynamic? Obviously the Vince McMahon and WWF influence, hey, pal, you're going to bring a snake with you. What did you think about that? Well, I sure as Vince's idea in a collaborative effort with Jake as well, Jake, I think, was lucky in as much as most promoters would not have dealt with snake. Its maintenance has got to travel. It's got to eat. You know, it's got to be protected and all these things. And when you got a crew of wrestlers that are Henri and wanting to.

"And then he would move over to stampede for Stu Hart where he really revitalized his career there. Did you happen to get a chance to see any Jake's work up there or hear about that? I only heard about it. I didn't see it. Different day and times as far as sharing audio and video and things of that nature. So no, I didn't see us work. But for what everybody told me, he was ahead of the curve. He was, you know, for a guy with this experienced level. He didn't wrestle lucky he was an experienced. So he got it real early on. But because of the nature of the television beast, under too much of his work for his Canadian stays. But he worked a lot. And that's what guys were looking forward to when they go there, working for Al tunnel, or for a Stuart, was ring time. You may not make a ton of money, and then again, you may do all right. But you're going to get plenty of risk. And that was crucial for the advancement of any talent. How much ringtone can you acquire? Big deal. It's a real big deal. Well, Jim, he would continue to get those reps and in an area where you were for you to see and that was when he came back to mid south in the early 80s. This is where I think he takes the next level or the next step in his progression. Is this where the DDT is invented down here in mid south in the early 80s for Jake? I'm not sure it might have been. It might have been. There are in Atlanta. I'm guessing. It's just I'm not being invasive. I just don't know the correct answer to put it in historical terms or a timeline. Because he seems like Jake seems like he's been doing the DDT forever. I don't remember him not doing it quite frankly. It's such a dominant finishing and stressing the point it was a finishing move. It wasn't a transition spot. It wasn't a false finish spot. When you get caught with the ET, you lost. And you know, to me, I think that's a smart wrestling. And Jake, he protected that finish. And he did it the right way. You're absolutely right. Even, you know, I was first exposed to him as a kid in WWE, or WWF at the time. And that was when he that person's body right into under his arm. You knew it was over. You knew it was over. You knew we were going to see the snake now to your point, JR, it's a transition move, unfortunately, in wrestling, and I know wrestling evolves, but man, the buildup. It was there, and that was the finisher. And it was all Jake Roberts, the DDT. He did, you mentioned it earlier that he really honed his craft, worked in a lot of areas. He would have some runs in mid Atlantic. He worked in Georgia. He worked in world class. He was in Florida. And this is all in between his mid south runs. You got to think. It was a good idea for him to get all this exposure in the different territories around this time just to really kind of perfect his craft. Yeah, he's a sponge. And the more content of material you can provide a sponge, the better off they are in the long haul. So and shake had a lot of really good teachers, a good influences, even though he probably was the head of the game, mentally, and probably 90% of the guys I'm referring to. He just was just a natural. And I thank him working with a lot of top talents, top promoters, productive territories, served him well. You know, like he said, he's going to be 67 soon. And he still contributing. You know, anybody's got a chance to sign Jake to a personal appearance or a seminar or a Q&A or things like that. You should not hesitate. He's just brilliant. And he can provide those that are listening, information that they can't get anywhere else. He's at the end of a long breed of talents from that era. And so anytime I think that you're a wrestling promoter or a and he want to share the knowledge of some of these veterans. That's a hell of a place to start. We take a snake Roberts. Well, JR, your career is woven with Jake the snake's career. And I have a clip here. We're going to play a man. This is a lot of fun. This is your glory days. This is back in mid south. It's January. It's 1986. And he had some big feuds with Ron Garvin and dick slater, but this is a memorable moment. And he's going to put dark journey here in the DDT, this is dirty dicks later's valet at the time. So let's take a look at this. And we'll bring back all the memories for you. Let's check it out. Let's do it, my way. And not your way. We'll just explain the DEG. We won't use it in 18. You're telling me you'll put this on the line if I won't use it EDT. Hey, man. You know, anybody call you mister Amazon. You must try to predictable, but they should never call you stupid, because that's the first thing I got you in this. So this thing I got going. If you go take that away from me, that's the only way. Take a DDT awake. Outside of my time. I'll tell you what, slater. Keep out of my face one more time. That's it, please. Let me tell you some slater. I won't use an EDT. It took it that jezebel out of here. That's my word to jezebel. She's still dressed. All right. Dirty dick trying to get into the advantage..

You know they're starting to buy into your stuff and it was the beginning from that point. On course the payoff. "As we've heard his wrestling fans you would have a referee who would start communicate with both locker rooms and carry finishes back and forth. I think is the phrase that they would use but my question i guess is what does that look like on tv day. I've been led to believe that. Sometimes it's like you guys were quote unquote booking the enhancement. Talent they just show up looking for work. And you know what you got when you get there. Do you have any communication with those guys ahead of time on. Tom's sometimes it would just be. The referee would care them the initiative. You know there was nothing really to talk about. It was if there was any conversation it would just simply be. Hey you know. This is the time we've got a go ahead and tell you in advance. We need to look strong or working with slater and and You know less sawyer so you know just to let you know upfront not be an a dick here but i need to get my shit in and sometimes you would not say that you would just be implied in the guys that were. They were smart enough to know they were there to enhance us and that was their goal for the day. That was their job description of the day and very seldom. Would you have anyone that that wanted to push the envelope and let's just say try. It's a fascinating time to be a wrestling fan. I can only imagine what it must be like to be in the business. You know people always talk about how all the businesses changed. I'm talking twenty twenty now. Twenty twenty one in fact but it's not like it used to be and you know these guys need to slow down just the evolution of everything that has changed in professional wrestling but the business was already changing here in eighty five from the way it was. You know gosh not even ten years prior five years prior right. Oh you had you had more action and any benefit was in the form of you know double dropkick other rock and roll expressed. That was up a level from you know what does done in the past a you looked at the fact. That guys were not all monsters. There were some guys coming along that were smaller midnight. Rock and roll. You know buddy. Landale was certainly no monster. There was new talent coming along. You know that We're changing the face of of what was believable and credible and you a lot more Let's just say value started to have some extraordinary bodies show up you know the nikita coal loss. And you know wouldn't be too long before the luger's and billy graham's and all these guys were just phenomenal you know jimmy snuka on. We're getting a little bit of course here but just just tell you the these type guys were starting to show up. There were different animals that were appearing as a professional wrestler from what it had been. Let's just say the seventies is interesting to take a look at this era and think about what the context twenty twenty one. what all's different Here's an example on june twenty-ninth. You guys are running augusta georgia once again. It's dick slater and buzz sawyer. Taking on oli in our anderson in the semi main event. The two days later on june thirtieth nineteen eighty-five cody rhodes is born. And knowing what's going on now in twenty twenty one with a w. and that you guys are back together and of course all the tangled webs that the roads and the andersons would leave as part of that four horsemen story. Line here the next coming years it. I can't. I can't look at that and not smile and think about boy if we only knew back then if we were to go back and talk to mardi lundy here on june thirtieth nineteen ninety-five say see that baby dusty has gotten that picture right there. One day you're going to walk to the ring with him. That's that's cool man. he's gonna be my boss at. Maybe you're out there. One day is going to tell you what to do. I got no problem him. Me and my boss or dustin for that matter. You know it's it's if you go back and look at the crocodile tears and we'd take wrestling out of it for just a moment dear dear and that year period. It's like cody was born. My son barrett mold was born it all somewhere in there. Charlotte flair was born. There were a lot of babies that were born. That are now in the business. Yeah and the thing is it was such a a. I can't tell you what a family atmosphere was you know amongst teams. I mean the oarsmen reason at worked. Well it's cost. We were friends and we trained together and we traveled together. We had a few bruschi together. And you know we would go to the lake together we go to rick's out by the pool together and you know the rock and roll expressed. They were friends. You know and dusty and magnum there were like like father inside you know i. It was a close knit group in those days. And jim crockett promotions as a whole because this thing was getting ready to pop and it was starting to be you know catching luxury to call it on fire and all these you know more talent was coming in at these times of fresh in everything up and it was just one of those deals. You felt this thing is percolating and inspection pop and just one of the things that was going on. All the wives were having babies all the all. The guys were buying houses and that would be start to come within the next year in business were yet on fire but you know it just was a family setting and you were achieving all these things together and you could feel it and it was a family atmosphere and you were drawing money together your lives were intertwined and it was just a it was a different feel of course now you know guys that worked for an individual company whether it's wwe or a w they all live all over the country.

"Next day june twenty third. You guys are back in the omni and now you're gonna be working second from the top as a reminder when we saw you at the omni earlier in the month and man think about that just as a sentence work in the omni twice in a month business hot to be doing that but anyway hear you are and what match. It's going to be because we're going to have the The confrontation finally come to permission. Olien arn versus dick slater and buzz sawyer and you guys pick up the win. The main event of horses magnum ta ric flair magnum gets the win d q. But actually pay in. This feud off after the big pot and the big hot angle on tv. And now it finally happens. That's gotta be a good feeling while. Yeah and you know what the fact that those guys didn't take the heat off of us and beat us that we beat them. It just made you wanna see it again. No one was satisfied with that from a fan perspective lansing michigan on june twenty fifth. You guys are in the main event this time. Dick buys pick the wind. But it's the hugh over you and only more of the same in steubenville ohio. This time it's not for jcp. It's actually for georgia championship wrestling. So your main of ending a couple of different territories here which is a nice thing. But then we're back on june. Twenty ninth hundred eighty-five doing tv This time we would say aren't only team up to take on alan martin and joe smith and we've got some some clips from there as well also wanna play Some some promos cruise in july. But that's very briefly. Go ahead and play Some audio from that tag match and in the ring. You're gonna see roy george allen martin. I can't all in arn anderson. And aren't addison start to work on right now. This team goalie and they can wrestle. Boy the minnesota wrecking crew. That's what they call themselves and you can see why by now. "Dick slater mean. They took a backseat. So there you go. The six man team is starting to build at this point. I mean obviously we're we're predating the horsemen there has been some sort of booking committee or some formal get together some grandiose plan of. Hey we're gonna put tally with these guys and make them the horseman at this point. It's really just family. It's all league are and flare Totally was not part of the equation whatsoever. Just the anderson's and that ta against you know and with rick. Supporting rick can whatever was going on. You know you said something earlier. You said that that match you know you would think it would be a sorry dick slater and dusty rhodes days but back then you had to buy tickets that right. Absolutely out of that was the beauty of our business. Heels owned television. That was where you got your heat. Put yourself in a position to be dominant and draw money. A you would not give away a match like that. You know that were saved for big shows super shows big events and you had to pay to see those and you could see those in the markets the bigger markets In those days you wouldn't send a match like that down to a small market or just give it away and that was the beauty and you know what wrestling fans have no problem paying for those matches. Because that's the only way you could save them all right. Let's talk about some cash van. We've talked a lot about money. Payoffs here on our and the more recent weeks and now. I'm here to talk to you about how to make some more money. If you've been paying attention to crypto over the last few years you probably say. It's just gone bananas. If it was like everybody now has gotten into it except me. I looked around and i wondered. Is this like a secret exclusive club. Because it's not like he can just run down to your local banker and sign up for this stuff right but coin based believes that everyone everywhere.

"Of course dick slater comes out and And makes the save and You guys jump in the ring for just a moment and then we're going to hear from dick gonna come to an end myself in bowl. That's certainly your way there. Now you take from one person and now what are you trying to do. What are you talking to catholics. Well let me tell you right now. Enersen you look at me real close and you believe and you better believe this will bill story. Is i gonna to threat to you. Want wanna go after a while. you're go get it. Could you go slow as you want to get you out. I don't care. What are i'll tell you what needs to be nasty closer. Strong words from dick slater there who made the big save. This is a big moment for you on tv. And of course you're going to go on to have so many big moments but at this point this has got to be one of the biggest moments i mean. This is the biggest television audience and to establish you know performers and hot angle. So talk me through what this must feel like for you as as a younger well number one on On the legitimate shoot. Dick slater was model. I I wanted to pattern myself. After him. he was one hundred percent legitimate killer in and out of the rain they were the biggest opponents. He and buzz that i've been involved in in my career highest profile and i knew it going out on that television. What had just happened. You had a sense. You had a feeling that the maybe we went too far. Maybe we didn't just far enough But you knew that angle now had a personal issue as you know conrad growing up as a wrestling fan. That's the one. The one with the personal issue is the one that captured the audience captured. There you know. I i got to go see that and your emotions were wrapped up in. It wasn't just on. The books are good wrestling match on paper. Now it had something you could sink your teeth into. And they were they were hope. High profile opponents sticks later and buzz sawyer. Myself and ole anderson you know where the personal issue man. It's tom do. Let's get with it and we're not done on this single episode by the way i all these not here for this show but arn is and he's gonna come out and he's got some things to say about what happened earlier in the day. Let's take a listen to.

I wasn't gonna take any bumps it have got really really ugly and not in a good way. You know i certainly would wouldn't wanna piss dick slater off you've heard all the stories. Yeah thunder brother the under So you know what my job was in that match. And i knew it was to get my ass kicked by both baby faces gave it a different look a different failed. There were section. You know. I'm getting backdropped. I'm getting close to over the top. I'm get shot out to the floor. Get backdropped on the floor. All those things that made it not look like what it could have been which would have just been just a fistfight bar fight. Which would not have been interesting because all those talents were were good. It's just you know what my what mindset were the end. And what are they feel like doing that night. And and just what came up but i was looking forward to it. I was thrilled for the match. We going to shoot a big angle on june. The first and of course we're going to try to pay it off on the twenty third at the omni but that is a story for another time or breaking down orange entire run through mid atlantic championship wrestling. And i'm happy to say aren't as you and our recording. This more of the o-. Crockett footage has been uploaded to the peacock network. So check it out. "World champion. Ric flair defeating the united states. Champion magnum ta. And they go an incredible fifty six minutes. We also would see dusty rhodes fight. Telly blanchard to double count out a little shorter match. You'll five minutes thirty five seconds But you get a little workout that night. Twelve minutes and fifty two seconds when you and only are going to take on thunderbolt and pass widely you ultimately get the get the pin over widely but man a stadium show may twenty seventh. What do you remember about this wrestling. Three rivers wow. Wow wow wow. They were really starting to test waters. Say if you go to a stadium. i'm sure it was cut way down and all that stuff in the ring was closer to home plate and to where you had the seats You could cut off. Flack half the field or two thirds of the field if you really wanted to create that environment It was a lot more animate but still. I don't know what cost would have been involved. But i know that it looked good on the where you are on tv and you were promoting it. Three rivers stadium a jim kaga promotion. Just it felt like if you were sitting on watching tv. Hey this is big you know maybe arena hold them. You know what thoughts were going. What what thoughts were being put out there. That they wanted the audience to thank I dunno they must have had a deal this far as what the rat was on. That stadium is it fun for you to wrestle an outdoor venue like this. I mean three rivers pretty iconic stadium as a sports fan. Is this a treat for you or is it at this point just another day at the office. Yeah i loved it. was there for you. Know being outdoors. You know the sound went straight up and disappeared so there were some tricks with the way people would react and all those things plus if you had it like you know in may. I'm sure it was kinda warm. But i bet it was very comfortable for the audience to be sitting outside. What's that son. went down for. Sure if you had a little breeze coming through that stadium if you're gonna go on wrestle hard for fifteen. Twenty minutes at little breeze was kind of refreshing. Let's mention we've got another show in lansing michigan The opening match just to give you your concept of who all's on this show italian stallion over john tatum. Then it's past widely going to withdraw with bob roop buzz sawyer. Over crusher khrushchev ryan. Garvan is going to get a win by deke over black bar and the main event only in oran- against thunderbolt and manny fernandez But then it's time to do some tv and this time we're doing it in charleston south carolina at the county hall on may thirty first. And there's a promo here of course like always with you and only But my favorite line here. This on. June i i think this airs. It's the national tag champs in orange says a lot of men are saying they could beat the andersons. But it's all all talk and only says buzz sawyer couldn't be a pimple on hogs but which is About as old school as it gets pretty fun stuff. The main event of that show is only in taking on alan martin and mark cooper but a few moments later buzz sawyer comes out to replace one of the andersons opponents and sawyer's eventually teamed until dick slater comes out to make the save. Talk to me about dick slater and buzz sawyer. And how they're now thrown into the fold for a feud with goss so this was stevie yep and it had been agreed upon that we knew we were working our way. I guess we should polish go ahead. you know. Just say for the people that weren't thinking this you're sitting there going. Jesus christ. how many times can they wrestle. Manny and under. You gotta remember all these towns. We were just wrestling them. Watch yep it wasn't like we were going back to weekly or biweekly towns and these batches are on tv. Yeah and they're not televised so as long as you follow your story on television. You're not you're not wanting to puke by god not again not again remember these. You're just individual markets where you're going around the country and wrestled these guys one time so just to clear that. But we've been given the the deal that there was a big. They're going to have a big stadium show in the summer They july middle of july and only an hour. We're gonna wrestle Buzzsaw dick slater which we knew that was going to be our money because that would be a main event it would be as a main event or whatever towns you're in unless dusty was there you would be right underneath it but i got very excited. Plus ditch later was model. He was the guy that you know. That made me along with bob. Morton junior wanna be wrestler and really just fell in love with it and so that would have been the first piece this television of shooting that. It's fun to think about that as a potential match for you guys you know in my opinion buzz sawyer and dick slater are too rough and tumble guys just like you and only or is it a match where it's too much of the same thing you know. They say styles make fights these days in mma and Maybe you do need some compare and contrast but it feels like that's like old school down and dirty ass kicking almost bill. Watts style matchup right. Well without taking this wrong way. The variable that was in that match. Had i just wanted to stay on my feet and slugging around like the other guys dickey was a little more you know bouncing up and down. He had no problem taking some bumps buzz. Only were slugging. It out now dickey would decided..

There was almost surreal watching him in this match and watching as a fan and watching as a co worker and i was back there stretching out not hot building getting the sweat going but i just remember thinking dick slater is. I'm on the same show as dick slater. I must be getting close to arriving and actually making it and magnum. Ta enters the match here and man. What a what a pop when he gets tagged in. You're looking at the roster when you arrive on his magnum at the top of the list of people that you wanted to russell well look at all these star is people love them and yajah wonder wrestle got like yesterday i wonder wanted to get in and just kinda measure you know moss kills and and and what i had to bring to the table against you know the top guys and i knew there was. You know down the road somewhere. There was going to be a match with magnum hours. Could wait all. These guys are very talented in the ring right now. Yeah you mentioned. Dick's dick slater in terms of his ability and work and how you really admired him. What can you tell us about the third man here on the team. Buzz tyler a veteran not to catch all paul. He was one of those guys that was a veteran. And you know he had just. I don't know. I think texas where he had his best ron. But he's a big rugged guy very athletic you know. He's a brawler.
