"Got a nice win today over at Coors Field as they beat the Seattle Mariners. Now it is a seriously long road trip and Here's the bad news. The Rockies are not back at course Field until Tuesday, August the third. That means if any of these guys get traded before the deadline today was their last day playing a game at Coors Field. Let's bring in Mike Rice. It is a great job calling Rockies baseball with Jack Corrigan, as they did today at correspond Field and Mike knowing that in the back of your mind, have we seen the last start by John Gray? Of course Field and have we seen the last of Trevor Story in Iraqis uniform? Good questions, guys. I would say no. On the first one I and if Iraqis trade John Gray, I could see him coming back as a free agent. I really could, but I don't I think there's less of a chance that they deal John and there is Trevor and I don't think it's at all a guarantee that they trade Trevor. Um, but it's At least to me and you know, I don't know. I don't know how it's going to shake down any more than anybody else. But I don't think it's a guarantee that either of them go even though I know a lot of people nationally think that it's a slam dunk that certainly Trevor is going to get traded. I'm not of of that mind right now. Well, give me they'll make a case Why the Rockies wouldn't trade Trevor story right now because I mean, the guy is going into free agency. You haven't worked out a long term contract with him. You know you're going to lose him, and I know you can get more. If you offer. Um, um, offer a contract at the end of the year, you'll get some draft compensation for him. We understand that, But is that the only argument that you would make No, I think the first argument I would make is that if you don't get the price tag that you want, al Why would you give him away like will, Schmidt said the other day. You know, we're not. We're not around to be the arm system for other teams. So the other teams know that Trevor wouldn't be under contract. So if there are some Negotiations behind the scenes that would with Trevor's agent that you know they would have some sort of number one desire to sign Trevor after this year and number two Realistic chance to do so. Then maybe the price tag goes up. But If you don't get the price that you want, you're probably better off keeping them And if Trevor ends up leaving as a free agent, you get the compensatory pick at the end of the first round of the draft. So there's that and then the other thing is this If you're Trevor story, and you're looking at how baseball teams are are constructed And you see a starting rotation with In no particular order. Airman Marquez Kyle three Island, John Gray, potentially in Austin Gamber. Um, that's that's the foundation that the Rockies have that they're going to be good. It's because those guys were leading the way. And if you look at what they've done this year, certainly at home. They've been excellent on the road. Little bit more inconsistent. But if you're looking at Trevor You know if you don't want to be a part of it, Sure you're going to go somewhere else. Trevor's not Nolan. He's a completely different personality, and I think the Rockies would have a shot to resign. Trevor Because the other side of it guys is this is a really, really deep class of very good free agent short stops, so teams are going to have their pick Javi Baez. Corey Seager forever story. I mean, there are guys out there that are going to be available if teams really want to want to go for one of them. Mike, Do you think that I mean, we talked about this earlier in the show after the game today and by the way, Rockies with a nice dub today 63 against the Seattle Mariners GCS scenario where possibly a team that is in the thick of it. And is just missing that piece to take them deep into a playoff run. May grab Trevor story as uh, almost like a rented player for just the remainder of the season and offer up something nice to the Rockies to have that Yeah, I think that's very much an option. Jo Jo and the closer teams get to the deadline. I think that becomes, uh more of a possibility, because team a looks at what team be just did and then says, Oh, my goodness, where we've got to Make sure we stay ahead of that team or we're going to try and catch that team. And so let's just pay the piper and get Trevor or get somebody else over pay for one of the Rockies free agents to be or maybe another player. And on the other side. I think Bill Schmidt is if he's smart, he's probably working the phones saying, Hey, do you mean in a nice in the right way, saying Do you want to over pay for one of these guys? That doesn't mean that the Rockies want to get rid of them. It just means that If they can get somebody to over pay. Why wouldn't they make that deal? Because even then there's still a chance that they could resigned. Greater story at the end of the year. I don't know how realistic it would be, but it would certainly be a possibility. So yes. I do think that that's just the way the trading deadline goes. Teams that are desperate will often Overpaid to try and make a run at things now, and the question is, Is there a team or are there a couple of teams that might be willing to do that? With story or grey? I don't know. Here's the question that maybe needs to be answered before we can get to a real real quality answer. Um, whose decision is this Is this Bill Smith's decision. Ultimately, I would think Dickman for would have to sign off on it. But if you have an interim GM, those who is leading the front office. I mean, I think that that's where the negotiations start, and that's where the Possibility start. But I also think that if Dick Mumford doesn't want to make a trade, he's going to say we're not making that trade and then no deal is going to get made. I mean, I mean, he's the owner. And I'm not saying dick those or doesn't want to trade any of those guys. We know from past history that he loves his players, and he tends to be loyal to his players and maybe keep them beyond. What would be prudent to keep guys I don't know that that's going to happen in this case, but, yeah, I mean, Dick's got the ability to say yes or no to any deal, but I think the point man on this would be built for sure. Well, and then you look at this, uh, this road trip that the Rockies about to go on with, uh and it's not going to be easy when you've got the Dodgers, the Angels and then the Padres to roll off before you come back home. That also could help decide what the price tag is for Trevor Story, depending on how the Rockies do in this last this last road trip before the trade deadline. Yeah, I would agree with that. Joe Joe. I mean, I think that factors in for sure. McCann the Rockies I look at the Angels and go. Yeah, that's a you know, that's a club that's right around 500 has been and has had some injuries, Obviously, with Mike trout missing significant time. And what not their pitching is still not settled right now and wasn't last year in the Covid season. But I don't mean to me it's more about Can the Rockies going and play good baseball against the Angels? Because if they do go in and play like they normally do, Of course he'll they're going to be right in those games and have a chance to win the series..

"Wow baseball darby's coming up drafts coming up what does that. Seven hundred rounds guys draft. Everybody that plays baseball in high school baseball right across the country. And then what. The draft isn't moby. It's like twenty rounds this year. So you know it's a they have it. It's going to be back to forty next year. I think what's crazy because we had. I knew some people that got drafted to the. Mlb pat white quarterbacks drafted three or four times while he was in college and he was and he was good too he played. Yeah just after four times. They are three times. I think they were betting that he wasn't going to make it in the nfl so they were trying to draft his rights. They didn't know what he was going to want to do it. It but towards the end there. I think he got drafted in the thirtieth round. I'm like that's bullshit that this team can pull the trigger on pat white in the seventy th round and get his rights or whatever but that's how baseball is right because it's a lot of projecting and there's a lot of people that opt out and go do college and do other stuff. Is that why they have to just cast a very wide net. Why is the draft. So damn you know like bates. It's it's weird. It's weird because i it's weird especially now it used to be that you could spend however much money you wanted on the draft but these days there's a limited pool of money that you're capable of spending on the draft so guys especially high school guys who don't go high in the draft. They're going to slip down and teams can pick them hoping that they can spend enough money to get them out of their college commitment but the reality is very few high school guys are gonna make as much as they could coming out of high school is they can't if they go and have a good college career and you go and get an education and you'll get to party for a few years like going to college and less you are like. Here's the thing. If you're a pitcher you should be much likelier to sign with an organization out of high school arm. Exactly because college coaches are incentivized to win games in order to keep their jobs. Have you win games. You win games by relying on your best pitchers. And how much are you going to rely on your best pitchers. How much are you gonna look out for them. It's been a question that's been around forever and in something that there are a few college coaches out there who do it right now but there are few who don't hey there's there's some environments down there in the sec. Though that i just got introduced to. I think it's awesome all that college baseball down there. Easings credible arkansas. Mississippi state of arkansas mississippi state vanderbilt florida like. Sec's where it's at and it was awesome. I did not know that electrifying. Lsu which one was the rock arkansas. Walk off that was the sound right. The first sound post cove it. I think that was like the a big pop in there was massive square garden. Had had its run there with the new york knicks. But then i think arkansas had that walk off home. Run in that pop that came from that crowd was one of the first ones you know. It's good to have fans back. And then i put that out. I was like oh my god. That sounds like that. Pop is incredible and then people started sending me videos from like i think mississippi state like everywhere around and it was like holy shit. I did not know college. Baseball was like that. But what i used to do with the pirates games these college kids probably do it. These you just go get absolutely hammered. in for the schools i assume they expect to win frost parts going to lose if they win. We're going to have a good time. If not which is you know is probably zambelli fireworks in. Nick actually has a question for you about that. I think jet speaking of the draft in the pirates in that crook bob nutting. They have the first pick of leave. Who are they gonna pick. It doesn't matter at all. We're training now. Aren't we trade out for sure if they could they probably would but you can't trade draft picks in baseball this guy fuck got his big time prospect guy. That's a game changer. Somebody that's maybe gonna play this year you know. Do we have anything like that. This might be the worst year to have the number one overall. They're like they're like five guys now. Here's the thing. This is interesting in this. This is where strategy comes in. This is what the pirates can do when you have five guys you know. There's a high school shortstop marcelo. Meyer high school shortstop to our lawler jack lighter kumar rocker. Were a couple of in came. Yes allied irs kid and That your name. Henry davis those are the presume -able potential mind. This would be great. He's techy jomar no top time. Are you kidding me do. We're getting do you think what's the strategy. What is the strategy strategy is going to be. This would be i promise. This is not a pirates. Only it sounds like something the pirates would do the strategy is going to be defined. Who's gonna take the least money and sign the number one. Pick to do that then because you can go and take that money that you save from that first guy and then by a high school player who might go to college out of his commitment later in the draft meaning you get two for one. Yeah or you could take that money and build another ski. Lift actually upgrading. Seven springs resort. That they have earned a mountains of pennsylvania. That i i assume. You can't say because you are like one of the faces of baseball at this point in the mlb. And when you get your suit and you do your whole baseball thing. It's like real big journalism. And your your documentaries have been incredible like you're you're a very thoughtful like very good journalist. So you can't say. Is there more than one bob. Nutting in the in the mlb that's trying to ruin their team sabotage it in front of everybody's is is he the only one or in how does this. How does the rest of the mlb let it happen. No there a number of owners out there whose teams have been terrible for a long time. I mean we're we're going to be in denver this weekend and you know dick mumford. Is the owner there. And he's a guy who for years has been criticized for the way that he has run his team and for the way that you look at the front office right now you have a bunch of guys who have quit their entire analytics department. Quit last year dick monfort. It's you know. He's like the head of the labor committee in baseball right now. Going into into this year where. There's a collective bargaining agreement coming up. And last year. He was advocating essentially getting rid of the draft like he just didn't wanna draft last year. Wanted to be as small as possible so it rockies fans feel the same way about him as you guys do about bob nodding and their owners listen when you got thirty guys who were billionaires in who were trying to make money and who. Don't look at the little guy. Look at the average fan as the most important thing. You're going to have some in there. Who who just become the villains of teams and i think that's what bob nutting is but let's look before like he's playing final mcclatchy a whole lot better. I don't know. is that the previous owner of before. Yeah that's why. I was. Never think pittsburgh ever. I mean what was his name. Andrew mccutchen with hey there was so what was that two thousand seventeen sixteen fifteen quite a pissed..

"The last that outing and just move on a lot of times closer to the guys with not just short memories but no memory. I just give me the ball. They'll pitch today. I got bombed last night. So what i'm going begin tonight And there's a lot of things that go into that. And i think daniel's case i mean the stuff is there obviously guy he's been around a long time you'd after a seven year break It's got to be frustrating for him but he's also got avoid sometimes. Like i said thoughtful guys. Way davis started thinking too much and wade davis as good as he was with the royals and the cubs came here and started nibbling. Started trying to miss that. And you can't pitch that way especially who's going. You can't walk people and daniel bart's me looks like he's nibbling a little bit and thinking too much trying to avoid contact. What pitching contact with the sheer swayed and get people out. Talking with mark. Knutson are syrupy four by four. Vip guest want to go back and talk about a guy that you brought up a little bit earlier that i have been more than impressed with In we've been hearing about how good this dude is going to be for quite some time. And that's brennan rogers. He's made some phenomenal. Plays over that second base position you would imagine once they do move on from trevor story moved over story. If that is the case he will sign over that short shortstop position and again the rockies. Continue this train of great shortstops well brenda. Rogers is frustrating. A lot of ways. You expect this two three years ago. Right knee injury in the injuries. Have just he's a can't. Miss prospect untouchable in trade discussions. All that but he came up and he's healthy he didn't do much. I just couldn't stay healthy. And the rap on him. At that point was decent. He wasn't very good offensive player. So could you plan to short stop. Well fortunately i guess all his time in the minor league all have timing obviously understood now the value of the player especially at the shortstop position. And yeah he might be able to guy guy shortstop trae how they've got it. San diego state spilled didn't shortstop a little bit this year and probably be other military position. So maybe they will be okay in that position. What we've seen from brendan rodgers this year. Certainly a lot different from what we've seen in the past in the past and very encouraging let's hope that that he's is like shit gonna be the real deal it's going to be the guy the next guy deposition well. It's probably way too early to even start talking about this. But you look at this infield and the rockies are gonna look a lot different Next year it seems they may have found something with elliot's d as behind the plate But cj probably going to get traded What is joshua has. Has he earned the right to come back and get another. Maybe i think garrett hamptons are out of they ride mcmahon's around and brennan rogers but that leaves openings all over the place in your infield what do you expect the rockies to do with those positions As starting first with first base. While i think all that to be determined first base you want you want michael. Toga picked up the kids you cheater. You want him to be your next. I basically You you don't my fan back ryan very nice job at third base. That's probably condition. He probably want joshua puentes to be. Utility guy can play person third and maybe some others just told me. When i met him several years ago he still albuquerque because he was playing third base. The time no one was the cousins. And you know you're got blocked play anywhere. I'll play apia shopping. So i think he'd be kinda pissed that bold hamson is also an animal Complained that decision. So i i think honestly Third baseman garages shortstop. They trail and or ham. Those second baseman and totally is the guy wanted to play. I think it's gonna be interesting. And i saw this. Take two mark that that. I wanna get your thoughts on As we continue our conversation with mark kanoute's and former major league pitcher contributor for thirteen ten. Kfi dot com with three strikes blog. that said you know i i hope i hope the rockies are competitive enough That they get to that five hundred area or they come on strong at the end of the year and the ownership starts to say well you know we may have something here and then they don't do anything. Do you see that happening this year. Absolutely in fact. I don't think they have. I think if they win seventy games. They're going to do that. Honestly i think if they if they seventy ninety seven seventy ninety two. They're still. I still think bill. That's gonna be the permanent gm I don't agree with it. I liked bill personally. And i think he's good at his job. He had before but this front office craves new thoughts new ideas newness all across the board. I think i mentioned that. Dan evans should be the next joel manager. He's boulder residents. He's he's been dot has the third leading percentage as a joe manager. Winning percentage in dodger history man was jailed. The white sox for twenty five years. He has dan's the guy. Dennis putting on the field of dreams game right now. Major league baseball his as his cask. But he's into billy involved in all the rockies doing right now. Dan would clean house told me that's my face. He would clean house because not because the guys who are there aren't good baseball people. It's just because it's change of scenery. Newness is needed sa- right now the rockies offices definition of insanity and i fully expect that continued because as i mentioned before dick mumford is extremely oil even being the last thing. Dick wants people lose their jobs. He's not gonna clean house he never he wants. He's not gonna hire somebody who's going to clean house. He's gonna hire somebody who's gonna keep people in their people employees. Who are his employment right now. So bill smith fits that bill for you guys lately. Have to to assist in. Gm's walk lately. So maybe they are considering The the need for new. I don't know but the rockies organization that front office needs to make a really bad just just for the sake of makeover just fresh ideas a new start better better focus on analytics all sorts of these things. It's not gonna come to the people who are doing it. And i think you're right. I think they're gonna you know going to keep doing what they're doing. Because they feel is a tunnel. The rest of the don't take dick. Montfort is very infuriating. Owner there's no doubt about it but in no way shape or form. Can you call him. You know a dumb owner. You can throw it out there. But he's not he's not a dumb at all. Do you think that he could surprise. Some people go that route of clearinghouse. Hal's seeing the backlash that he took last year with bright edge and with the nolan trade doubted simply. Because i mean i i liked it. Personally it's been very nice man. He's been great to me. I consider him a friend but he every oldest have faults and one of his fault. he's loyal to a fault. And i just don't see him letting people go. His father didn't let people go from me packing plant. You know there's a reason all these places around named montfort because family's very philanthropic very caring very generous He's just goes against every grain and his body to let a bunch of people be fired now if a bunch of people leave on their own volition that he doesn't have control over necessarily might look that happen to take their leaving for a better job or something is probably gonna say know best of luck but i just can't see them cleaning the house. I can't him Changing course that dream has dramatically as needed right now Just because it just the human part of it means means so much to talk with markelle. Knutson here on our syrupy format for the i guess. Mark your three-strikes plug. It's up on thirteen kids k..

"The super super wrist of the superstars. in the playoffs. Three consecutive years. I understand that's not That's not that resume is not going to get you a Hall of Fame. But now he's an M V P He is well known. Even though people still can't pronounce his name correctly and people that have my job. Nationally. Can't say Nicole Yokich, his name correctly. But among basketball fans They know the Joker. They know Yokich. But he's not on It's not in the The basketball Illuminati. Right? I think he's a superstar. So my definition of a superstar might be more broad than yours. But mine is certainly more restrictive than what's being thrown around with Trey Young and Devin Booker. Are they well, on their way? Yeah. Are they going to be superstars one day? Yeah. They are. But not yet. And then the other thing. The more pertinent thing out of that is it's like Jamal Murray should be in this conversation. You know, just You hate everything about what happened on April 12th. Just everything but Jamal having this conversation Happening with al Jamal Murray just feels patently unfair. But we quickly forget people now. Bubble. Jamal might as well been 20 years ago. We forget quickly. You hope that he comes back next year. Stronger than ever, and Puts up the type of performances that we see from Devin Booker and Donovan Mitchell and Trae Young and gets that love again. Cause he got it in the bubble last year, but Quickly was forgotten and then fully for it was starting to get forgotten throughout the season and then April 12th world around and his Completely out of mind. Story number three today is, um, just more Iraqis awesomeness that I don't know where to begin, whether it's the actual team or it's their All Star game. Let's start with the team. Two high level executives with the team have left in the last three weeks, Nick Growth of the athletic has been all over this story. And I'll save you from my boat metaphor that I made early on in the show. But the reason why I think they're leaving. Is because they see That the Rockies are heading down the road and you may think well, they already are here. Yeah. Just wait. I am. No fine. Uh, I'm no fan of Jeff Bride Itch. But he was at least allowed to make some decisions. I think we are heading down a path. Where Dick Monfort has total control of the Colorado Rockies. Or And I'm not saying that he's going to be on the phone making trades. I think he gave Jeff Bride at some latitude because Dan O. Dowd suggested Jeff Breakage and Dick Monfort respected Dan. No doubt I think there was some separation. I don't think there's going to be So while Dick Monfort might not be getting on the phone with the Yankees trying to negotiated Trevor Story trade Bill Schmidt. Greg fees or these are just extensions. It's like guardians of the galaxy, too. You've seen this film. Terrific film. You should check it out. Kurt Russell's character Now I won't give you the spoiler of who he is. But He does something where he takes pieces of himself and puts them on the ground and other planets. That's what Dick Monfort is doing with the Rockies. He's taking a piece of himself. And making him the team President Greg feasible. He's taking a piece of himself and making Bill Schmidt GM and I initially thought that GM that Bill Sherman Didn't think he was long for that job. But I also didn't think that he was completely beholden to Dickman for and now I think maybe I'm wrong on both of those fronts. I think you have smart. There are smart base baseball people inside the Rockies organization. They are. They've been ignored. For years. And also they're kind of looking around and saying, even if I do become the general manager, What's my life gonna be, like? Am I going to truly be leading a franchise? Or am I just going to be Dick Mumford's puppet and I think There are people in this organization. They're saying, I don't want to sign up for that. And we saw a mass exodus of analytics people. That we're leaving, So I think that's what you're seeing. I think we're getting ready for some very disappointing news. When it comes to the future of the Colorado Rockies, because Don't think you're going to be blown away by who they decide to be their GM and Don't think you're going to be happy about it either. As far as the All Star game goes. Uniforms released today. Cliff Notes version. They slap some purple on the Atlanta All Star uniform. What they did. Even the mate on the hats. The the logo of the team is red. Like the Braves. Braves have read Rockies Don't They put a little bit of outline purple outline of a star. Behind the red logo. Say, Look, Rockies Colorado Denver. Purple outline of a star. And then on the jerseys, they have red lettering on a White jersey. You know, I have an all Star jersey at home From the last time the Rockies hosted the The thing that It was It's green..

"Will be Bill Schmidt. Great feasible. And Dick Monfort. Another thing that stood out to me today. If he is the guy in the organization. And I don't mean this as a slight necessarily to him, But it's gonna come off that way. If he's the best they can do internally. Then I am even more steadfast in my position that the right guy for this job permanently. Is not employed by the Colorado Rockies. He just feels like And if it is him If it is him, then His suspicions and worst fears are going to be realized because people already said when Greg feasible was promoted that great feasible is just an extension of Dick Monfort. He's yes, man. He does whatever Dick Mumford asked bills from it kind of came off that way, too. A little bit. So if Bill Schmidt gets the interim tag lifted off of him. At the end of the season. Then it will be completely Dick Monfort. There will be nobody else. No descending voices, no peers. Nothing like that will be. I'm making all the decisions. Will tell Greg what to do on the business side. I will tell Bill what to do on the baseball side and it will be all me which is not the direction that we thought the Rocky should go. They should not double down on Dick Monfort. They should Should be the other way, where he takes less of an active role. But only time's going to tell that I wouldn't say today was my first impression of Bill Schmidt because I've been on plenty of those draft zoom calls where he's met with the media about draft picks. Over the last.

"And i've had to look i've had to expand my my is my scope to see if there's any kind of parallel even in other sports right at least in baseball. I don't see a parallel to how the rockies are doing this in an old timey way right now in baseball. I don't i think they're they're unique in that way. And i don't know if i don't know if there's like an analogy in the nhl or the cleveland browns are some kind of like comparison. I really don't know enough about the front office sports to know if there's a parallel but there is something unique about how the rockies are screwing up right now which is interesting to me anyway so you can't fire the owner and as you said that sort of take some of hope out of the situation the path to improving this. But do you think there's any evidence that montfort the bridage have the capacity for self reflection self evaluation. I don't know whether they read your article. Sure they're very aware of it at least if they're seeing seeing person after person. Say these things. Do you think that that gets through or do they just hunker down and discount the critics and we're not even going to entertain the notion that we're doing something wrong here. I mean might another unsuccessful season perhaps hammer home that they need some sort of plan and if they do develop one is the organization that would want to work for after reading this article. I can't say that the top baseball operations talent will be lining up to work for the rockies but it does seem like they need enough people to provide the information that other teams are providing to their players to their leadership and not also making them work as clubhouse attendance. Is there any way that they might sort of. Reflect and without just stepping down or handing over control. Completely say okay. We recognized that we need to do things differently. Because that has seemed to be kind of a consistent quality were montfort. I don't know whether it is denial or whether he genuinely believed these things or whether he is just trying to put a positive spin on things but it always seems as he thinks that the team can compete and then usually doesn't and i don't know whether he then says oh. I guess i was wrong about that. Or whether he thinks like wealth the players just need to do better but they're the same players as before. Yeah i if if they need an article to explain their problems and then the nasa problem. That's a problem in itself. But i hope this came through to in the article Suddenly something that shine through when we talked to other front office people around the leak their impression of the rockies. And i think this is very accurate and they ate the rockies disagree with this but this is certainly their reputation in the league that they exist on an island that they're in a bubble on that they're in their own bubble and they kinda don't see they're sorta not able to see the forest for the trees and when this has been brought up with for instance dick mont vert. You know he'll say well. Yeah but you know. Dan o'dowd came from cleveland. You know we weren't totally insular on that one and it's like well true but you only have three gm. So you just mentioned one of three. And jeff ryan started with the rockies almost twenty years ago so he's been with the team this long even though he's been jam only for six his staff is almost all basically homegrown all of them sort of work their way up there are very very few outside voices with the rockies and it seems though that even dick mumford. His active in some owner committees that he kind of. This is my impression that this is just me injecting here but it's my impression that he just wanted doesn't have a lot of import from outside the team either. He's not interested in it or just doesn't have access to it. He just sometimes. It seems like he doesn't have anyone to give him a context for where his team is. At now i would. I would guess like jeff. Riches certainly smart. He knows baseball. I would imagine that he is a lot more aware of those things but together the two of them together they sort of become one at some point and you know whatever they're doing to self justify the past that they've been on it's been enough that justification but enough to keep them going on on these sort of errant path so i i wouldn't foresee any any changes now after the are not trade. You know somebody asked him if he'd ever considered firing jeff privately said no. I haven't at all. I've considered firing myself now. He said that slightly jokingly i think but But he sort of like i can't i really can't tell if that was some self awareness or not but the key to that was that he had not considered at all a change as general manager and again. This was in the story. You know their last general manager download. He wasn't fired. He left their last manager. Walt weiss he was fired he laughed. He kind of got fed up and left the manager before him. Jim tracy also wasn't fired he'd left. There's a pattern of people who work for the team who just sort of have had enough and just left but there is not a pattern and there's not any any evidence of recent evidence of then making wholesale changes in any way internally so again i think that's just proves a pattern that can you know extrapolate to how they'll act here in the near future. There's probably not going to be any major changes unless somebody just decides i've i've had enough. I think we'll transition to some of the results on the field last the rockies fans listening offer themselves as sacrifices to dinner although. I don't know that that's going to improve their moods all that much. But i guess maybe we can start with a relative bright spot and talk about her marquez. Who you mentioned is one of the the good trades that they've had and certainly the ace of their staff and there was a brief period when the rockies were good where they were really being led by pitching and they've seen some regression from some of the guys who we can point to as part of that good twenty eight staff but marquez has done well he you know he had a bit of a regression from two thousand eighteen in his twenty nine hundred season but his short season in two thousand twenty was very impressive particularly when you consider the environs of course so i'm curious sort of how he course corrected from twenty nineteen them. What your expectations are for him this year. And whether you expect that he will remain a rocky. he's under contract until two thousand twenty three. But i don't know what will be left of the team by then. So do you expect that. He will stay in in denver or that he will get shipped off at some point. We'll yeah..

"Fishing together in mind as well. Be brothers. No one Ah, Renato of fly fishing with Charlie Blackmon down it. Decker's right below the dam right below. Cheeseman caught some fish. No one doesn't fish. Doesn't know a trout from a From a pit bull and he was fishing with Charlie Blackmon. They're really close. That clubhouse was really, really close. And they split them all up. So it's It's almost more damning Ryan because That the moves that they made it's not a situation, you know, I think conventional wisdom says the Rockies. They're cheap. They don't spend money. That's not the case. They had the 11th highest payroll. I think it was 11th maybe 10th highest payroll. They just made really bad moves. Really moves that were just right under their nose like DJ They should have known DJ LeMay. He was a stud defender. He's even better hitter. And you sign a guy that's coming off an injury and Daniel Murphy, this is just stuff that I don't know if it's the Harvard Analytics they got in the way you know, there's there's paralysis by over analysis. That could be the case here. They were on a trajectory that looked like they might actually become something that could be sustained. But the moves that were made no one sitting back there saying, I'm not going through another three or four years of this, and I can't blame them. We'll clean. It gives that my guess You mentioned a sustainable winning. You've written about that idea, But as I recall, your latest work on that was more about You know, 5280 ft in gigantic gaps and left field left center and right center and but you've written about the prospect of actually having sustainable winning baseball. In Colorado. Let me ask you. Do you think that There's a recipe here if Jeff Bright itches fired if Dick Mumford sells the team, I mean, I guess that's the first thing that has to happen, right? But I do you see that there is a path here for sustainable baseball, with or without this brain trust. With this Brain trust as it stands now, No No, they they should they should all be gone. Should be new ownership. And ideally, it's someone who writes that checks. Numbers and Kabo and stays out of the way. That's the owner of the Colorado Rockies Need And the GM needs to be feel. Epstein Needs to be somebody like that. That is one in a place that hasn't won in a long time. No. Urban Meyer did that in several spots. It can be done. I don't think you can sustain winning. With this ball park. It's not an elevation thing for me. It's this ballpark. That pitching rules the game. We've seen it with the Cardinals for years senior with the Yankees for years, the Dodgers, of course. I mean, that's an All Star team in L A. You gotta have pitching. You can't pitch in that park. So this is not You know? This is not absolving all the culprits of 25 years, of course field. They've made some really silly decisions over there. With that park. Enough guys have come through here established pitchers established managers that say they wince when they talk about course Field. It's not an illusion. What they have to do is they have to shrink that Al feel That's not the It's not. How far does it went out of the park? That outfield like top golf, it's It's the Overland Park driving range that I helped built over on Santa Fe. There's way too much green out there. You can't cover all that green. It's not the homers that kill you. It's the single that should be out the doubles that should be out. That's going to have to change eventually. But I want to be real clear. This is not relieving the The culprits of the sense that they have committed because that whole place should be cleaned out. Right now. No one are are not always the best third baseman I will ever watch and he should have retired and gone into Cooperstown as Iraqi Um I brought this up on on Monday. Um I said, you know what? We've recently had a bunch of dudes and I wanna diminish who they are, because obviously they have Ah, high intelligence level, but we see Regular dudes on Reddit just please billionaire hedge fund managers and I, and I likened it to what people were saying about trying to, you know, Boycott the Rockies and everything. And then, as the week has gone on Don't think about like Yeah, they won the day. Like the war is still going to be won by those guys on Wall Street. So even though I am right there with Rockies fans like the only way we can affect change. Is by denying Dick Monfort our money. Um, how? How viable do you think that actually is? How feasible? Is there a point here where we can force a sale of the Colorado Rockies? How does this happen? That here's right come down on that because it's really a tough conversation, the people that You interact with the cores. It's a lot of times it's Stanley's. And it's It's kids and moms and dads and I'm not trying to take baseball away from eight year old You know that? That's the last thing I want to do that. That's that. That is the happiest place. It's the second best ballpark. Behind San Francisco in all of baseball. It really is. It's Is the capital of Denver. And In some ways, that's the capital of the boom that we've seen in Colorado because that's when it really started. So Also if you take out all the rocky stands Dodger standards still gone. Cardinal standards still going the Cubs? Sanders still gonna be there. Are they really going to steal that in their pocketbook? As much as we think to the point that it's going to force him to sell I have my doubts. Maybe it does, you know? I'm not a great mathematician. Maybe that's enough. That it you know, hurts him that they have to go back to Greeley. I'm not sure. But I don't want to take baseball away from people. I do think a smart thing to do would be to check out the Rocky Mountain vibes. That's a really great place to go to watch a ball game. And hopefully people are able to go to ball games and I'd suggest going to catch provides this summer. Why I like that idea, And you make such a great point. And I was thinking this during the week like Who Who does this move work out Best for and it's like The visiting fans, because that's always been who Dick mom for values more than the Rockies fans. His customers they cares about are the Cubs fans and the Cardinals fans in the Dodger fans so As much as I hate to say it. I think you're right. But it's worth a shot, I guess is the way that I would put it. It's certainly worth the shot. Let me ask you this before. We go. I mean, no, no Colorado connection. Broncos aren't playing in it. Um What's your level of interest for the Super Bowl? You're gonna be doing anything. I'm sure they're gonna ask you your pick. In the Gazette. But what's your level of interest in the Super Bowl? It's it's high. It's very hi. Um I'm going handsome time. You already know that great value in the Bucks will win on Sunday. This is this is his deal. This is what he does. And I feel pretty strongly about that. It's not because along with the chief stand right now. You know, there's like five or six guys out there. Jokers, one of them..

Let's just say things got kind of funny and kind of interesting. He always has A. Back pocket forever I say. Yes there's no exception in this year you can imagine what covert and the challenges are running a major league baseball team and building out a city block in downtown. "Feels that wing defender role as well. Big physical wing. So I'd like it. I still think he probably stays with the warriors, but now another wrinkle in it because now anyone can offer him just as much money as the warriors can some of you will weighing in on our question earlier. So there's this team in the Minnesota intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Mayak that is apparently too good. And the rest of the conference members are banding together and saying, you must leave, or we will disband the conference, and it's gotten me and a lot of you thinking, who would you like to take out if you could threaten to disband the NFL or major league baseball, or the NBA. In order to get its best team to get kicked out who she pick. Pete. I don't like this one pizzas chiefs. And then he puts blah. I don't like that. But I I understand Pete's worry. Patty Mahomes, going to be running the league for the next decade. Kyle says, I'm so the opposite kick out the horrible teams he wants the bad teams to get kicked out. That's an interesting way of looking at it kick out the teams that bring down the level of competition on somebody. He'll is-is. Oh wheels. First time longtime he says Avs, just because they're fans are whining. I don't know who he's referring to really don't. And a one couple of your thoughts on Jeff -british I posed. The question is Jeff bridage to free agency. What John Elway is to the draft, and you really can't trust his judgment. Accurately pointed out by Tyler that some of the guys I mentioned were traits. Someone always a trade from Toronto and Jake McGee was a trade from Tampa. So fair point. But you still have Mike Dunn Brian shot in Desmond. Daniel murphy. To a lesser extent. Way davis. That have not and look on the other side. And it's like the John Elway thing. I mean, look at the other side of this they fielded an entire lineup today of homegrown players. The result wasn't great. But how awesome is that to say? Blackmon are not. Oh, Rogers tapioca. Story. Wolters Tony Walters. Borderline all star. These are all guys that were brought up where a lot of them were picked by Jeff bright itch. And when he was farmed director, a lot of them alive. Their development was overseen by him. So. I'm not I'm not calling for Jeff radishes head here. Not far from it, because I think he's built this team, the right way, and he has gone out in free agency in did the right thing. I said at the beginning of the year. The Rockies have done the right thing they've invested in their bullpen. They've invested money into problem areas in their lineup but they just have not panned out. It's the same John Elway. You may think that the Broncos made the right decision which Shane Ray where Shane Ray. Now, you may think that they may at the time the right decision with Paxton Lynch, or Sylvester Morris or Monte ball. At the time. But where are they now? Oh, I think it's. It's a little bit of a problem when you're looking to supplement your roster you wanna grow up from within. Right. But you also got supplemented in free agency is one of those ways in dick Montfort is not cheap. Dick Mumford anymore. He likes to spend not Yankees Red Sox spend but spend. And if the guy Ryan the checks isn't doing a good job of picking free agents. All of a sudden those purse strings are going to tighten. Eight six zero zero.

"Their smash burger special grills and products. To course field. A good burger the Colorado Rockies now have a name for the giant development project was to Coors, KOA, NewsRadio cherry bell has that information. Dick, Mumford says it wasn't easy coming up with a name for the project. A professional firm suggested nine names in Montfort says all nine were well pretty crappy. So he went home one night thought about it thought about it. And thought about it and came up with this McGregor square naming the project after the late Rockies president Kelly McGregor at chorus field. Jerry, Bill, KOA NewsRadio. That project is set to open in two thousand twenty one. It covers over six hundred fifty thousand square feet and includes apartments a hotel restaurants retail stores right next to Coors field. If you're heading downtown today, it's going to be packed. This is the twenty-seven sell out in a row for an opening day game here in Denver. We're going to be down here. All morning long than Mandy Connell. Takes over at ten. Lewis and Logan will take you up to the Rockies on deck at one thirty for speech today to ten at Coors field. There is some other news reforming. For you today. The man accused of murder and the disappearance of a mother from woodland park is expected in court today. Patrick phrase's. Arraignment is scheduled for eight thirty this morning in teller county in connection with the death of Kelsey Berith. She disappeared last thanksgiving in a remains have yet to be found a key witness in the case told investigators Brazi beat Barrett to death and then burned her body. He's facing multiple charges, including first degree murder. Chad Hoffman KOA NewsRadio. And a weird story gets even weird. Or how about this one police say the person who claimed he was a missing boy, a fourteen year old from Illinois is actually a felon a twenty three year old man from Ohio. Brian Michael Rini told police in Kentucky he was Timothy Pinson who went missing when he was just six in twenty eleven DNA tests. Prove that Riney was faking the whole thing, and he has a arrest record as long as they're armone believable is one of the stranger more stories so sad for the family to just go through it all over again is revisiting here Coors field. It is beautiful right now this morning, and we look forward to having you hopefully come down here and join us maybe not at this hour, but a little later today for the game should be a lot of fun. "Hundred dot com. Make sure you get the word out on social media as well. Because some of these schools, I would say Mesa ridge and rampart or two of the best in terms of getting the vote out. So that's what you. Eric kademi fans Coronado fans. Vista ridge fans are against so spread the word and get your student athlete on this show on Friday. We are just what a week or two away from pitchers and catchers reporting for spring training and. Harper Bryce Harper. Manny Machado are have yet to sign anywhere in Ken Rosenthal wrote something for the athletic today. Talking about somebody who might influence Bryce Harper and Manny Machado in terms of getting them signed or setting the market. And that person just so happens to be Nolan are Nado can MLB dot com. This was Thomas Harding spoke to dick Montfort, and dick Mumford said, quote, I think we've gotten to the point where we're to the finals were to the crescendo, and quote that is even a more optimistic timeline than I had thought I thought this was going to be an ongoing thing through spring training, maybe into like the first month or two of the season wrapping these things up, but if you trust what dig Montfort saying or you buy into his optimism this thing might be done before they break camp, which is certainly heartening. Now, Ken Rosenthal is saying if no-one are an auto gets eight years. For two hundred and fifty million dollars. Because there's no doubt the Rockies are going to sign him for less than three hundred million. Even and Nolan might be able to garner three hundred million maybe out on the open market. I'm a little bit skeptical of that idea too. Because again, we're sitting here and Bryce Harper. Manny Machado have signed nowhere. My guess is if anybody offered either guy three hundred million dollars they'd be signed by now. Even know knowing are not oh is a better player than both Machado Ambrose Harper in his more deserving of a contract like three hundred million dollars. The fact of the matter is that MLB owners are not inclined to cross at three hundred million dollar number anytime soon and the Rockies won't be. But this is always what happens you're always going to for the sake of security. Maybe you get an extra year tacked on where you might not get that in free agency. But if you sign an extension before your contract is up you're not going to get as much money as you get on the open market, usually. Again with the. You can call it cheapness. You could call it the how wise the MLB owners are whatever. However, you want to characterize it. The best deal for Nolan are and auto could be to re up with the Rockies. Now. I mean, who's to say that Harper and Machado aren't influencing Nolan's decision. To say is that really what I wanna do next offseason? I have I've been I have to be relegated to meeting with the Padres to try and either get a deal done or or drive up the bidding. So. I do. I do believe dick mom for when he says that they're getting close doesn't mean it could all fall apart, right? But I do believe him when he says that we're getting. To the crescendo here because I think Nolan is looking at his colleagues in Manny Machado and Bryce Harper in saying, I don't want to go through that. And there's no doubt that Nolan loves it in Colorado, and the Rockies certainly aren't going to low ball Nolan are not, oh, they value him in one thing that we have noticed throughout the course of Rockies history is they value to the point where they overvalue people managers players. The Rockies sometimes love their own too much. By in this case, it could be ended up being a good thing because it could get Nolan Arnott's deal done. And I don't love the idea of ten years. I don't like the super long term contract. But. Nolan can always go Nolan's never been as banged up. His Troy to Lewinsky was and no one could make the move across the diamond to first base at some point. He's just too valuable to this team. And if he leaves and they don't find anyone to replace him. Then that window that that Rockies have open right now, we'll slam shut. And we'll be back to five years of building up Nolan right now is worth every penny in every year. They give him on that deal every contract ages badly every single one. But if it's gonna take ten years if it's gonna take two hundred and eighty million to play to pay I should say your best player your most important player. The best player. Your franchise has ever seen. Then I do it. I do it. There's always going to be a dodgers or angels or Yankees or Red Sox that are willing to take on a massive contract. If they feel like it would be the missing piece. But with Nolan are I'll when do you think you'll get into that? If you're okay with eight years, you're talking about two additional years. Where the Rockies are now who wants to even think a decade into the future. You kidding me? We're worried about this year. It's this year. The Rockies have got to make their move. So. We'll all regret thirty eight year old Nolan are Nado. Playing first base batting two twenty-five. But I'll say I'll take the previous seven or eight years. And deal with the last couple. I mean, they're going to bring back Carlos Gonzales for Pete's sake. Nolan. Are not.
