"Is definitely a team. Yeah it's the comradeship. A lot of players tell me when they leave their sport. That's the thing you want said. Dave what i do best is not let people blocked me. I just hate to be blocked and following each season. The forty niners would rate their players based on their performance. The typical score for linebacker was seven hundred and fifty and your score in nineteen seventy-three was one thousand three hundred and six and that season you recorded. One hundred and four solo tackles four forced fumbles and you tackled opposing ball carriers for a loss on thirteen occasions. And you really a true student of the game. Everybody i've talked to about you said that. What does that mean. Fundamentally correct where this goes back to when i was in high school and junior college and stuff and that and the coaches that i had and i always thought everything started with your feet if you if they're in the wrong position when you do certain things and that's comes from the coaches that i had the top that and fundamental lakes. Great athletes tenant. I played against the dick. Kim john mackey guys like that. Who are very talented guy. And the only way. I probably going to succeed in cheaper getting blocked. Step with doing the proper technique. Make my share my theater in the right spot at the right time or that are they the leverage that i'm supposed to have i gotta make sure i'd get that There again we just a play got older played more games. We would look at films in the pick up the little thing that might tip off a play. Yeah a guard might be. His foot might be six inches behind on one play and not on another one so you wait a minute. Why is he doing that that type of thing and then then of course you know like i said there's so many great athletes in that world And there are a lot of them today. Of course but i fundamentally i had to be correct. 'cause you know maybe i didn't have as much talent. There's some of the other guys. But i was gonna work my tail off to make sure i knew fundamentally abbas right let me ask you about one of the stats. I mentioned a little bit earlier because it kind of blows me away. I you know as well as i do that when it came to health and when it came to doctors back in that period of time It just wasn't the same as it is today and you missed only one game during your career because of an injury. How did that happen. How were you able to do that. I don't know maybe got hidden ahead too many times I got a nineteen seventy. We were playing a miami and exhibition game. I got clip me and tore the cartilage in my knee. It was About the second or third exhibition game and played whole season in nineteen seventy with that. Can i get my name. Drain and put it knifes and Man they talk about a challenge. But i had to play. I mean. i couldn't couldn't let my teammates down so i had to be there and do that And so it was a matter of our dr lloyd. Milner was our team doctor and so long as it wasn't you know hurting breaking something else or more problems. He's you know you can play. But it's going to hurt and of course it is quite used to tape it up and all that. Then after the nineteen seventy. I went back to oregon and a guy named dr slocum who at that time was one of the meal. Orthopedic people in the country fix their operated on fixed it in college. At that time. I mean i was in a hospital for a week and stepping out. Something you go in the morning at ten and your home at noon so anyhow But yeah. I wouldn't recommend that everybody do that. But it worked out for me. Let me also ask you. During the course of the eleven years you played in the nfl. You think back about all the games that you played in. Is there one that is really indelibly in your mind forever. Every one of them You know how fortunate i was to be able to do that. You look back okay. I said i asked my eighth grade class of eight kids. My high school graduating class for your high school i. There was fifty one kids in my graduating class. I grew up on a farm. In eastern oregon. How in the heck did i ever end up. Going to canton. Ohio great coaches and some skill and sure a lot of luck and a lot of good team knicks. When you take a look at all the great players you played with and you played against as well hall of famers outstanding players. What's the commonality all of you have. I think it's probably competitiveness. What would it make. Sure you do everything correctly And you know working with your teammate. I always stop that. Every team that i was on was a good team had half a dozen leaders that took care internal problems when i was in san francisco. Our coaches never had to discipline players. 'cause they're six or eight guys that took care of that problem and i remember dick nolan. One time wanted to know where there's one tip player was in. The player had done something they shouldn't have been done and we had a team meeting and he got a little huffy so one of our guys took a hold of him and put him in the locker and put the lock on the locker and left him in there and told him when he was ready to be part of the team. We'd let him out so we practice and coach mullen woman role. Where so what swell. He's tight at right now. It'd be with us tomorrow. Dave wilcox with us again hall of fame linebacker who played his entire eleven year career with the forty niners and that included playing seven pro bowls and was an all pro five times as i said the thing that jumped out at me is the fact that he only missed one game during his career because of an injury. And if you think back about Again the medical aspects of playing professional football it was not the same as it is today. We continue with more of you and sports byline. Have you written a book.
