The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to be the 86th attorney general of the United States. Judge Garland I wanna welcome you and your family. I want to welcome you back to the Senate Judiciary Committee. I know this return trip. It's been a long time and planning on you're here. Finally, this will be the Judiciary Committee's first hearing of the 117th Congress. Before I turned to my opening remarks. I'd like to just take a few minutes to make some Acknowledgments. I want to welcome my friend, Senator Chuck Grassley as the committee's ranking member. When I first came on the Senate Judiciary Committee 24 years ago, I was the ranking member on subcommittee with you, and we dealt with the issue of bankruptcy. Now Illinois and Iowa sit next to each other. And so did Urban Grassley. We have our differences. But Senator Grassley and I have worked together on important legislation over the years, most recently on criminal justice and sensing reform. I look forward to continuing that work in this Congress. I want to recognize the outgoing chair and ranking member Senator Lindsey Graham, who will join us remotely this morning, and Senator Dianne Feinstein. Senator Graham, as is true of Senator Grassley. There's some historic first in the Judiciary Committee this year, Senator Padilla, our new senator from California, will be chairing the subcommittee on immigration, citizenship. Border safety. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey will chair the subcommittee on criminal justice and counter terrorism. He's the first Black senator to chair a judiciary subcommittee. And we could not imagine a better choice at the helm of this particular subcommittee to all of our other members who are returning to serve on the committee. Welcome back. I want to thank all the committee members for agreeing to hold this committee hearing and vote on Judge Garland's nomination. It is a great honor to serve on this committee. The Senate established the Judiciary Committee by resolution on December 10th 18 16, making it among the very first standing committees of the Senate. This committee has seen many consequential debates and approved many important nominations and landmark legislation in the committee's history. There has only been one prior Illinois senator to serve his chair Judge Garland Lyman. The Freedman's bureau acts of 18 65 and 18 66 Civil Rights Act of 18 66. The last of these was introduced by Trumbull ultimately became the nation's first civil rights law. As chair, Trumbull saw a nation torn apart by original sin slavery and widespread violence and injustice that continued even after the 13th amendments. Passage is African Americans throughout the nation face race. System. Our nation is still dealing with the consequences of these injustices. People of color face systemic racism, and we're still working to rid this nation of the horrific legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. This committee could make a difference. We have the jurisdiction and the opportunity to do it through legislation, oversight and nominations, including this nomination of Merrick Garland to service our nation's next attorney general. There have been few moments in history where the role of attorney general and the occupant of That post It mattered more Judge Garland should you be confirmed, and I have every confidence you will be. No science whatsoever involved, especially in California. With the outdoor dining. They've shut down outdoor dining now. And they're not paying the business owners 600 bucks. So what big deal to drop in the bucket man? That is nothing that is not going to get the adults that is not going to get families through Christmas, much less a week worth of groceries. Binge Lynch somebody somewhere season to the jungle murders. Wherever you get your podcasts? Welcome back to stay the Union. The stalemate over impeachment raises a key question for Democrats with Republicans in control of the Senate. Democrats accomplished anything by holding onto the articles of impeachment in the House and potentially delay a Senate trial joining me. Now is the number two Senate Democrat Dick Durbin. Who was there twenty one years ago during the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton? Thank you so much for joining me this morning. Several of Your Fellow Democrats Elizabeth Warren Kamala Kamala Harris Bernie. Sanders have said based on the evidence that they have seen they would vote to convict president trump. Will You well. I'm going to take uh-huh Tho- office when it comes to this impeachment on the floor of the Senate as I did. Twenty twenty one years ago with President Clinton's impeachment and in that I promise impartial partial justice. So help me God and I want to stick by that. I basically WanNa hear the evidence read the documents make a decision. That's right for America. So is it a mistake for your fellow senators on both sides of the aisle. Frankly to say how they're gonNA vote before the trial starts. I really think it is. I think they've gone too far. How can they hold their hands up and say I swear impartial justice? I'd like to sit at the managers table with the president's team. You can't do that They shouldn't have done has has handed McConnell well. They shouldn't as far as I'm concerned they can tell which way they're leaning or how they feel in terms of the probability but when it comes to saying I've made up my mind it's it's all over for goodness sakes that is not what the constitution envisioned Alexander Hamilton said we give this job to the Senate because they are quote independent and dignified for for goodness sake. Let's do our best to meet those standards. So Senator Speaker Pelosi says that. She's waiting to send the articles of impeachment from the House to the Senate until she's is confident that there's going to be a fair trial you heard Senate majority the majority leader Mitch. McConnell say it doesn't matter he doesn't even need to have a trial anyway. So so what leverage do you and your fellow Democrats think you have here by holding the articles in the house. All I can tell you I went to the floor of the Senate I was the only member of the Senate talk sitting on the floor and listen carefully to what Senator McConnell said the other day And it was very clear to me. He's made up his mind. He's not interested in evidence. He's not interested interested in the facts. He wants to get this over with and move onto the important more federal judges a serious problem. I think the American people expect us to to carefully consider the evidence not conceal the evidence. They're looking for a fair trial not a fake trial. The real trial involves documents and witnesses. But do do you think that by keeping the articles of impeachment in the House. That's GonNa really help your case. I think it's a fair question from Speaker Speaker Pelosi as to whether or not they'll be any evidence offered and that's what she's asked for. I know that Senator Schumer sat down with Senator McConnell on Thursday the first time they they sat down with one another to discuss this matter. It didn't go very far. Senator Schumer said to senator McConnell. I'll let you think over over the holidays and let's come back to this as soon as we can. I can understand that speaker. Pelosi would like to have some idea of what's how this case is GonNa be presented. That's not unreasonable. It's not unreasonable. But do you really think that she. And and you and Democrats have leverage here because what McConnell is saying is all right so you don't send me the articles of impeachment so what I'll move on and do more judges than the leverage is is our hope that four Republican senators will stand up as twenty years ago. We saw in the impeachment of Bill Clinton and say this is much bigger than our current political. Squabbles this is the third time in history of president's been impeached. The constitution is very clear that we have an awesome responsibility. And let's it's live up to it on a bipartisan basis. Four Republican senators. Step up it can make a big difference. Talk to a lot of Republican senators across the aisle. Do you have you identified. I four. Who will do that no? I've not whipped them twisted their arms or asked hard questions. I've spoken to a few of them. They tell me the the political circumstances now in the Republican caucus are really very extreme in terms of this loyalty to the president. No matter what. So don't senator during President Clinton's impeachment trial. You remember all one hundred senators including yourself to delay a possible questions about witnesses says until after both sides made their case. That's exactly what Mitch McConnell says. He wants to do again. Take the template from twenty one years ago use it now. What's what's wrong with that? Well if well the difference is that point we had an extensive investigation by Kenneth Starr with sworn testimony in grand jury testimony. Any there was a big record for us to deal with in terms of the trial of Bill Clinton. We don't have that in this situation. We have the actions of some fourteen. Different witnesses Who appeared before the House of Representatives and of course other evidence has been brought together? What we're looking for as a signal from Mitch? McConnell hasn't ruled out and the documents and witnesses this is and we've asked for some very obvious witnesses Mick Mulvaney for goodness sakes. We believe was not only party to the conversation. That's at hand here but as acting head out of the oil. Mb He had something to do to withhold this military aid Ukraine. So should house Democrats have waited and gone to the courts to try to compel the testimony from people like Mick Mulvaney well. The President's defense team knew exactly that if that was a strategy the followed we would never finish this in a timely fashion nation as this wound its way through court from one level to another so they went forward with what I thought were compelling testimonies from these witnesses we we saw them all in fact at one point and make this point. I want to make this point data. They invited the house. Judiciary Committee invited the president and his attorney to actually sit at the dice and ask questions the president's defense team turn them down didn't want to be there. DidN'T WANNA ask the questions so at this point I think they move forward as best they could to present the case. Thanks you were talking about Republicans who may join you in some of these votes. You're the you're the whip. Let me ask you about some Democrats. There are a number of moderate Democrats with they potentially vote against either articles of impeachment. Dan I want to tell you I've been with for a while. And when it comes to whipping on votes votes there are some. We don't touch and this is one of them. I'm thinking that green new deal remember how many Democrats coming out of the time Dick Durbin came out laughed at it as he should have yes a lot warmer. because it is ridiculous we're gonna rebuild every structure in America in the next like ten years twelve years whatever it was we're gonna basically make the need for air travel obsolete hi fi rail because no politician is ever talked about getting high speed rail in the United States coast to coast right no one's ever court right. Obama promise that it's gonna happen. so you have now you have all of the candidates basically saying yes it doesn't go too far. what in fact in some cases they were saying that the green new deal doesn't go far enough. that's amazing you know what I want to bring this out just so I can hear it again because this was the reaction when it first got brought out Dick Durbin of all people I would be I can't tell you to be honest with you have read it and reread it lasted more keep what in the heck what in the heck.

"Illinois. Senator dick Durbin read from the letter the summer load of the department sent to congress from Reese to public late in the afternoon, March twenty four th did not fully capture the context nature and substance of the offices work and conclusions again, and again, Democrats questioned the attorney general about the discrepancy between his characterization of the special counsel's report and the concerns Muller detailed in his letter. I talked directly to Bob and Bob told me that he did not have objections to the accuracy attorneys. Don't put things in writing unless they're pretty serious about them. And again, and again bar often looking impatient and irritated defended his interpretation of Muller's findings after a months long trial. If I wanted to go at. And get out to the public. What the verdict was pending preparation of the full transcript and the prosecutor comes up and caps me on the shoulder and says, well, the verdict doesn't really fully capture all my work about that. Great. You know, cross examination. I did. Or how about that third day of trial? Where I did that this doesn't capture everything my answer to that is I'm not trying to capture everything I'm just trying to state the verdict and while Democrats William Barr with questions about his conclusions. Republicans repeatedly returned to subjects like Hillary Clinton's emails, whether or not the Trump campaign was spied on and the questions of bias at the Justice department during the two thousand sixteen election as Texas Senator John Cornyn did here we now need to know what steps the Obama FBI department of Justice and intelligence community. What steps they took to undermine the political process and put a thumb on the scale and favor one political candidate over the other Tennessee, Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn was one of the. Senators questioning attorney general Bill bar today. Welcome. Thank you so much. So a big topic of conversation. Among some of your democratic colleagues today was the attorney general's representation of the findings in the Miller report. Do you think that bars four page summary fairly reflected the findings of the special counsel? Yeah. When you look at so report, which people can now get this report. They can read it what the attorney general did was to put full word an accounting of what was in that report. And he offered for Mr. Muller to be able to review that before he sent it out. Mr. Muller did not. And now you're hearing that there was a a back and forth. But let's leave that conversation to Mr. bar, and Mr. Muller, well that conversation is now widely public. I mean, how do you square the concerns Muller raised in his leg? Letter a letter that was released today. A letter that he sent to bar and these concerns let me read them out to you here. I'll just quote bar summary, quote, did not fully capture the context nature and substance of this office work and conclusions end, quote, he goes on to say this threatens to undermine public confidence in the outcome of investigations. Are you taking issue with the special counsels viewpoint expressed in his letter you had general bar today? Say that many of the problems were with how the media had represented the report and general bar like any of us cannot control what the media is going to say or the opinion that they are going to express with Ad Council. Said in his letter that he felt misunderstandings resulted from Bill bars for page summary misunderstandings. That may happen yet. Ten lawyers in a room, you're going to have twelve different opinion. Wins. Do you wanna see Robert Mueller testified before congress? You know, there are some that would like to see him come and testify. I think most people say look the report is filed. What more are you going to learn? Well, how do you feel would you object to him testifying before congress the American people and tennesseans spine large will say, look, let's get to work on some issues less make certain that government is accountable, and then let's move onto dealing with transportation with health care with keeping the economy going they like to talk about brighter futures for their families. And those are the things that are there emphasis, the Muller report has been filed and they're ready to see us do some work that is important to them. Well, given that given that there are so many real world concerns that people have that voters have the chair of the judiciary committee Lindsay Graham has said that he wants to. Investigate the origins of the Mueller investigation. You have just said look it's time to move on. The investigation is over there is real work to be done on real issues. Do you think what Senator Graham is proposing is a productive use of time and resources? You know, it's consistent to say. The report is there in the findings are there in. It's also consistent to say. Let's hold the government agencies accountable. And if there are bad actors, let to deal with these bad actors, so you think it's a productive use of. They they want to know how we got to this point. So that no presidential candidate democrat or Republican ever sees something like this happened to them. So you would like to see an investigation of the investigation. You do think that's productive user is. We know that that actors are rooted out and that we are going to be well served by individuals. Who realize we are a nation of laws that we will abide by the rule of law again to you were going to have law enforcement there that is to uphold the law, Marsha Blackburn is a Republican Senator from Tennessee, she sits on the judiciary committee. Thank you very much for joining us. Thank you so much..

"Senator dick Durbin from Illinois. As way, then his his is not happy with McCain's explanation for lying yesterday morning. Turban appeared on MSNBC reacting to McCain's explanation for lying to investigators about leaking information to the press. And McCabe is said numberous times in this. Cockamamie book tour of his that when I served as deputy director. I was one or two people in the FBI who have the authority by FBI policy to interact with the media and decide what information as an organization we shared with the media. I don't consider any of the authorized dissemination of information. I was involved in over. My course of deputy director to be leaks. They are not leaks. Well, dick, turbans said that McCabe explanation doesn't satisfy him is I have to say, I'm still struggling with the fact that after twenty years in working in the FBI really taking close look at the questions and answers and making life and death decisions that his explanation doesn't really satisfy me as to why he faltered in this moment when he was being asked about his own conduct. Translation, I don't believe this guy. And I don't know why when it comes to explaining his own behavior. He can't just own up and admitted anything well that's not hard to figure out. The coup is still underway. And as long as the coup is still underway. The people in the coup conducting it cannot admit to have done anything wrong. They have to basically signal that everything they've done is justified. Because of the importance of getting rid of Donald Trump. I asked for a little montage of how the media has been treating or did react originally to the Justice mallet hoax, and we've we've put one together here, and it's just a review it, there's nothing really earth shattering here. We're talking to dick Durbin, the number two democrat. A member committee like what else you wanna talk about? And he definitely gave the impression that it's going to be more Muller. In part because. Even like, the more protection Bill that would give any special counsel sort of a judicial recourse if that he was fired all those bills sponsors are on this committee. So sort of. "Modern history. The face of special counsel, Robert Muller's probe is looming large over a high stakes hearing for President Trump's attorney general nominee. William bar will be in the hot seat today when he faces the Senate Judiciary committee for a two day grilling that's expected to focus on the fate of Mr. Mueller's investigation into the two thousand sixteen election and potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow. A good portion of the focus will be on an unsolicited memo that Mr. bar wrote last June saying that the Muller probe is based quote on a fatally misconceive theory and would you quote lasting damage to the presidency? A preview of the hearing from Jordan Carney, Senate reporter at the hill. Jordan, he's been making private visits with lawmakers. So he has been meeting he met with Olympic Graham, who's the new committee, chairman Mitch McConnell on any sort of in meeting with a handful Democrats on the committee. Diane Feinstein, top democrat, Chris coons and has been trying to. To reassure them that he will let us investigation continue unimpeded that he believes it's important for the country that the investigation be allowed to finish. He expected to say that he wants to release is much of Moore's final report as possible. I think the reaction from Democrats spent I'm glad you're saying to us privately we want you to say that publicly on the records. Everyone can hear it. During his confirmation hearings to those one on one meetings with lawmakers work. I think they came out of those still pretty skeptical or, you know, there there seemed to be, you know, nothing matters unless it's on the record a couple of them also said they didn't ask him about this memo that has caused much controversy. "Game show on different band camp. That is Scott Robbins entertainment Markley back on Monday. Yes, sir. A little bit as I look up and. Hi cd. Breaking news headline. CNN? I just saw the word sometimes contentious Chuck and Nancy Nancy's meeting in the White House with President Trump today was quote, sometimes can tend not so good. What are you telling me that they didn't hold hands and sing kumbaya together? It might have been a little bit contentious a little bit. Yes. Breaking news, Scott. Water is wet. What do we think was going to happen here? Right. Yeah. Not all negotiations. Go all that. Well, listen, if everybody were just super friendly during every negotiation, it'd probably be no point in having negotiations because we agree on anything. Anyway. Sometimes there are some rough and tumble things that go on behind closed doors. My ends this thing it was like, okay. Gotta go look at the time. No one can cry uncle right now. Right. One of Chuck's gotta go. Well, I gotta go pick the grandkids up from daycare gotta go. Oh, just ends the meeting. Yes. Dick Durbin dick Durbin up there. You know that clown. Never he he's always the backbencher isn't he he's standing there with that concerned girl brow? Yeah. Then guy. No, his he was probably the one who called the meeting short saying hold on. I gotta come up with things that are racist. Now. A few months ago where he? That's the thing. He just stands this feedback and forth. It's chuck. It's nancy. And they're just turns around, and that's what he does. Okay. Mike pence. Vice President Mike Pence is also part of these discussions. He sat down with Tucker Carlson on Fox News last night talking about the ongoing negotiations over the border wall. Which again, if you missed it, the breaking news was where sometimes contentious. Yes, I don't know if you knew that that might happen. He says Democrats ought to be willing to make a deal here because the president's been openness some other things that other Republicans would not have otherwise been open to what we've completely focused on is keeping the president's promise to build a wall to pass legislation that provides other support for border security to give the people that are forcing our laws at the border and across the country enforcing our immigration laws, the resources and the tools that they need. There's a lot of people talking about a lot of different ideas. You know, frankly, the better part of the year ago, the president expressed a willingness to deal with the issue of dreamers compassionate way for people who were brought here as children throw fault of their own. He's discussed that it's being talked about. We're here to make a deal, but it's a deal that's going to result in achieving real games on border security, and you have no border security without a wall. We have no deal without wall. And what's so bad about that? Really? I mean, if you ask the. Question. I know Democrats don't want the border wall. I know that's something. That's a sticking point right now. But if you're willing to why wouldn't you be willing to give up on the border wall and increased border security measures in exchange for the dreamers because less than a year ago, the dreamers were the most important population in this country. The news media, and the Democrats spent two weeks every day telling us that this was the most important thing in America was protecting the dreamers. So you have an opportunity now why not take the president will be able to spike the ball in the end zone. If there's a wall, and they will do everything they can to make sure he cannot spike the ball in the end zone. But you'd also be able to spike the ball in the end zone to protections for dreamers. That's the whole. I thought that was the direction Pence was heading. And that's when he discussed this, right? And that's what Mike Pence says here's what we're gonna do. Right. We've put it out there back going above what Obama wanted to do. Yes. Which I know I was shocked a lot of people who supported the president voted for the president were very surprised that he was talking about one point eight million people giving them a pass to citizenship, which is way more than what by about a million. Yes, what the Obama administration was talking about? And they weren't even talking about a path to citizenship. So I don't understand why the Democrats don't take up the ball and run with it other than this is all about politics policy, making Trump look as bad as possible for twenty. That's what this is. And Trump is the bad guy. Apparently because according to Chuck Schumer. He said he'd keep the government closed for a very long period of time months or even years. Yeah. Okay. Well, we'll see where this all goes. I wish that they would actually have a conversation 'cause you know, Trump's not going to back. He shouldn't back down on what he wants. This is what he campaigned on PD stand firm on it. And where I think Lindsey Graham we have the audio yesterday. Let's get Graham is probably right presidency is over. If he caves on this at this point because he's not getting the wall now air moving forward. This is the last chance he gets to get anything close to a wall. That's it. Another story out there. And this surprises me British pediatricians are saying that there is little evidence. That screen time is harmful for kids. I thought that was terrible for them. There is little evidence. That screen time is in itself harmful to a child's health. This new guidance published by British pediatricians and the guidance avoid setting limits on screen time. Use for children of all ages. Was released by the Royal College of pediatrics and child health in the UK says it's impossible to recommend age appropriate time limits, but does however recommend avoiding screens an hour before bedtime to help children sleep better. According to their press release that they put out they say that families should place value on positive activities like exercise that being said. They don't see a direct link to any real problems. And they don't want to put a blanket screen time. Limit to recommend for kids, except we have all these other studies that suggest that it can lead to obesity and heart disease like dogs. Right. Right. Yes. All these other things, you know, what this is. This is really a group of pediatricians who are also parents and they want to be able to just put the ipad in front of the kid. Tell him to shut up. Yeah. It is quite effective. I've seen it in. I mean, you you throw some Pepe pig on that three year old isn't isn't screaming at the olive garden anymore. She'll be quiet. It worked. You were introduced to the world of Pepe pig. I was that's fantastic. I was with my nieces are six and three. And they I mean, Pepe pig is like crack to them. Oh, yeah. You put on Pepe pig. And they it doesn't matter because you know, kids, especially that age. Well, maybe a little bit younger than the oldest niece, but they can go from everything's totally great to everything is in crisis in a heartbeat. I mean just out of nowhere just you could be skipping at the park and everybody should LA landed. Suddenly, it's just total meltdown mode. And they do that just like a lot of other kids do and it doesn't matter. How bad of a mood. Therein, you throw on that stupid cartoon, and they're just transfixed by it's amazing. So I think that's why these pediatricians have come out now and said. Listen, man, I need an excuse to tell my wife. It's not that bad. Put the ipad for the kid. It's ok they're not going to die from a heart attack at the age of seven. No, that's it. Another story out there from ABC news. New York City is joined a growing number of cities and states that allow people to choose a gender neutral marker on their birth certificates. Starting this week. Anyone who was born in New York City has the ability to have the gender marker on their birth certificate changed to x rather than male or female and are able to do. So without a doctor's note or medical assessments. He can just walk in and say, hey, I wanna put an X there. You don't need to have anything other than your desire to do. So okay. How is this going to affect crime stoppers? What do you mean? We're looking for a approximately six foot two. Approximately six foot two gender neutral. Janney. We can't we don't know. Now, we don't know what to call it. Right. The world is getting more complicated. An you still have the same gender affiliation. So they officer. I do I'm still X. Right. Yeah. They say, no, doctor's note is required. And that's important apparently again represents more than just eliminating an extra step in the process. One of the people involved. Here said self attest station, essentially shows that the government is recognizing that transgender people. As citizens are the ones who know what their identity is. And are able to tell the government that really are there to tell the government that rather than the other way around. How are we going to demographically ascend assigned genders moving forward just not going to like people just people between the ages of twenty five and fifty. The X. What if I just want the emoji where it's the guy kind of having the sideways look on his face in his hands up. I dunno whatever whatever you want. Just everything has to be so complicated. Gosh, that's it. And without a doctor's note, though, can't you theoretically, just go and change your identity left and right without any ad, but they do. It doesn't matter to me. But in the rock and roll annals the kinks headed all right? Didn't they was L O L A? I'm not done. But I do understand why she walk like a moment and talk Lacrima man's, right? I know what I am. And I'm glad I'm a man and sows Lola. Yes. Yup. That's what happens way in front of the game. This is a great story or a great beginning to a story of Breathalyzer designed to detect multiple cancers in story all my heard about this from time to time. But now it's in the testing phase and the theory behind it is there several illnesses that are known to create signature smells from the body. Like, typhoid fever is reportedly something it, smells like baked bread. There are other like diabetes. Is supposed to be similar to rotten apples on the breath. If you have diabetes, there's my dad was diabetic. And there was a certain sweetness, but they're thinking that a person's breath. Could also indicate the presence of cancer. Wow. Man. Cancer research has launched a two year trial into a clinical device called the breath biopsy to find out if exhaled airborne molecules can be useful for cancer detection. Because depending on what you're going in for sometimes the tests can be pretty invasive and painful. Yes. And this is just blow into this device. How amazing would that be? Well, why stop there? I mean, it could be heart disease or kidney disease or anything else. Right. So what they're saying moly, man. This is crazy in the body's normal metabolic processes molecules called volatile.

So thank you. I would just tell you flattery is my old boss. Paul Douglas went set is like perfume is pleasant to the sentence. Senses. But lethal if swallowed so I think so much for your kind words, and I've got another 'cause the dreamers, DACA. We gotta get this done. Absolutely. And time's running out. They have court protection it may end tomorrow and explained to folks who might not know what you mean when you say DACA or dreamers dream act seventeen years ago, if you brought to this country under the age of sixteen grow up here educated. No criminal record get a chance path to citizenship. That's with dramatic said we couldn't pass it Bronco bama's, president create an executive order eight hundred thousand people signed up would have been eligible for the dream act expose themselves. They walked right into government said here, I am. And right now, those eight hundred thousand can live in this country that fear of deportation and can legally work here. No, thanks to President Trump. It was September of twenty seventeen that he eliminated the program. We haven't replaced it. It's the court protection. That's keeping these folks in a good legal position. We got to be ready to move quickly to save them and their families and this Ereli similar to criminal Justice reform because if you pull Americans what do they say, they're in favor of it overwhelmingly. Yeah, give them a chance. They know they came here's kids and painful thing is in my stay. Their business owners. Yes. First responders people that work with children people who have been elevated through their service to others. They're contribu-contributions to our economy. These are Americans in every single way, but a piece of paper showing guts, grit, even willingness to die for our country. But we have left him in states of insecurity that he roads at their sense of wellbeing that we have to address they changed your bed in the motel room last night. And they're watching your mom at the nursing home today. Yes. These folks that we trust with our kids daycare and to say that they're somehow ineligible to be part of the future of America's just as a son of an immigrant. I take it personally. Well, you deserve a Christmas break. I hope you're taking that you're not running around knowing you might not take that long of a regular take that break because I know when we get back to I know for sure about dick Durbin, you'll be back working on criminal Justice reform because we're not finished there that we will be working on DACA and dreamers fixes that. You'll allow this young. Senator from New Jersey to be your side kick on those noble battle Stanford cardinal at my say. Fail. A man. Thank you so much. Thank you for listening to this episode, which is really very personally important to me because also much dick Durbin as as do. So many of us. "It was one of my worst votes creating the hundred to one and all the rest of it. I finally feel like I'm getting it. Right. And the fact that I get it right means a lot of people will be treated, right? Not all of them. Sit a lot to do. This is just the opening. It is the first step as we characterize it. There's a lot more that needs to be done. But we have finally decided I think as a nation moving toward the feeling we're gonna fight the war on drugs with our brains, not our muscles. We're going to think about ways that stop drugs coming into this country to deal with the interdiction of and also deal with the treatment of people in a much different way, it reflects the fact that the opioid epidemic which has taken over in this country has opened the eyes of people everywhere too. The fact that says a problem of the inner city anymore. There isn't any suburb to wealthy. No town too small to avoid this opioid epidemic. And people who are looking at the victims are not seeing poor inner city living people they're seeing their brothers and sisters and sons and daughters. So they're starting to think about drugs and a different way. I think that we are evolving as nation as we think about drugs and how to deal with them. I believe it's a scourge. It breaks my heart to hear when someone is addicted. But at least now we're not saying, it's a moral curse. In your finished were saying to them. It's a disease we're gonna treat it. Well, I wanna put it to you this way if you were not a Senator back in the eighties when those mandatory minimums and three strikes route into crack cocaine despair, if you were not a Senator that would have happened. Anyway, it was where the heard was going, but I will say this. If you were not a Senator now the correction for that would not have happened you or the guy on our side of the aisle and. I know you're going to try to clearly the White House. Indispensable partner clearly Grassley in Inle indispensable partners. But as democrat in the democratic caucus, I know for sure if dick Durbin was not a Senator we would not have this day. And I want to tell you as you know, I live in an inner city community with people who have been adversely affected by an unfair unjust war on drugs. You are a champion my friend, and I am so grateful that you're my friend, and that you have allowed me this last five years to be your partner on getting this over the finish line. And then a great partner the man who brought me into politics was impulse. I am. And he was a Senator in my state before me he had some basic rules, and I live by when it comes to public service. He said look for two things in public service honesty and somebody who's willing to help the helpless that those were the north star the guideline when it comes to what I want to be a member of the Senate, and I'll bet you do too well beyond I mean because this is the thing. For me in this day of politics were money pouring in using pick constituencies that have no lobbyists. You fight for people who come who. Don't don't nobody fights for that are marginalized, and it's often lonely place. But I Meyer you so much and me my career be marked by the values that you exhibit every single day told you visit federal prisons pretty well. You are. But that and I'm sorry to get you know, one of these guys says before you tell me about your religion for show to me how you treat other people's. I don't wanna talk religion. But you know, Matthew twenty five Jesus speaks. You know, when you visit me in prison when I was in prison you visit me when I was hungry. You fed me. It goes through this long list. And if you view read that I've seen you not preach. I don't even know much about your faith, sir. But I, but you live those values every single day are exhibited in Matthew twenty five and the fact that you go to prison to to visit with people you're fighting for and that they know who you are..

"Again to another edition of lift every voice. I cannot tell you. I am so excited about this episode because I am just literally hours have now passed since what was yesterday affectively around eight a little after eight o'clock where we passed a historic piece of legislation a call the first step act, which will get to in a second. But my guest today really is my champion on criminal Justice reform in the United States Senate when I was a very new Senator about five years ago, I came to the Senate to work on criminal Justice reform. It was one of the things that drove me to want to try to a run for the Senate in the first place and the guy who when I landed on the Senate floor and the democratic caucus who kind of took the under his arm would already had the seminal piece of legislation. Do sentencing reform is a man named dick Durbin, the Senator from Illinois. And I have him is my guest today. He led the charge to get this legislation passed, and I just want to thank him in welcome to this podcast. Thank you Senator van. Thanks corey. And it was a team effort. And I I was just happy as heck that you were by my side. It was a great great feeling on the floor last night. I think we made history. Clearly, we did. And I'd like to just go back a while. Because Senator the thing that makes me sad about you is that some of the best beaches. I've ever heard you give there's no press to listen to when you stand up, and you corral or caucus on moral issues. You are really one of the people that is a moral voice in the democratic caucus talking about the people that are often left behind the folks that don't have lobbyists. I've seen you stand up and talk for for immigrants and DACA kids. And then clearly on criminal Justice reform before I even got to the United States Senate. Now, you said something in the press conference, which was I thought it was really moving. Because you just told the truth about how we got into a certain hole, and how you've been on a mission for years and years and years now to get it maybe we can start there. Well, I said at the press conference, and I've said many times, you don't often hear Senator preface speech by saying let me tell you about the worst vote I ever cast. The worst vote ever cast was nine hundred eighty six along come crack cocaine, and we were told be frightened very frightened. It's dirty. It's easy to produce highly addictive. So destructive particularly to pregnant women..

"These are malevolent spirits at work in our culture right now. And you ain't gonna a hold them back with Lindsey, Graham, I promise. You ain't gonna hold them back whatever with Grassley today at the cavenaugh hearing waving Kane, dick dick Durbin my friend. I can't believe he's out unfair to me. Hell laughs laughs belly last laughs until it Ps. It's serpentine pants laughs at you. That's human tradition versus human tradition. Good luck zero times hero is zero. Jesus says, whoever loses his life for my sake, we'll find it. This is the contrarian worldview. I know by site it doesn't make any sense. And that's why those disciple scattered when they saw their Lord arrested. In the few that remained ran when they saw him executed. At all of them hid after they saw him buried behind it too. And by their human tradition by the elemental spirits of this world. And by the ways they had knowingly accepted being deceived by what the real power was on the planet. It looked pretty lost. It looked like no one would blame them for cutting a deal, taking the lesser of two evils, figuring out what was the best way out of this mess because no one's getting out of this really unscathed. And then a weird thing happened. Stone was rolled away. In the one they had abandoned the one they ran away from, they won the won. They hid in fear after they saw him die. Walked right through their front door. Like a boss. And said, you guys have no idea, no idea who the real power is around here. None. I wonder sometimes do we really understand who the real power is around here?.
