The Story of Auld Lang Syne
"Well when this time of year rolls around you probably will hear one song and one song in particular seemingly over and over again. Quick note here. I was listening to my christmas traditional songs. And i kept hearing it. But what song am i talking about. Well i just told you old. Elaine sign it does have a rather big nostalgia meaning to it and along with it here in the united states. A bit of sadness and usually marks an emotional scene or we action. The song. old lang sign was originally written in scottish. When taken apart and put back together again. An- actually means old long sense and is translated yet again to mean all times sake or for the sake of old times this song that is mostly sung and means the emotional conclusion to another year. And don't we need that. It also means that one must remember people from their past and raise a toast to them. Originally it was written many many years ago as a scottish celebration song. Old lang zayn is actually a scottish language. Written by robert burns in seventeen eighty eight and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. But did you know that. In the netherlands. It is a soccer anthem and in japan. It is a song about firefly's and and south korea. It was the national anthem until nineteen forty eight. It is known as being easily adaptable and mostly all musical styles. That is why it is so cool but at its core it is well known and many countries especially in the english speaking world. It's traditional use. Being to bid farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight on new year's eve it is also sung at funerals graduations and as a farewell or ending to other asians the international scouting movement in many countries uses it to close jamborees and other functions and a little note here when i was watching the crown on netflix day. Sung it when they said goodbye to the prime minister. Certainly most of us know the song old lang zayn but to quote from the first stanza of the english version of the james watson ballad. Here it goes should be aware since be forgot and never thought upon the flames of love extinguished and fully past and gone is thy sweetheart now grown so cold that loving breast of nine the thou cast never once reflect on old lang zayn in scotland. It is common practice that everyone joins hands with the person next to them. To form a great circle around the dance floor at the beginning of the last verse. Everyone crosses their arms across their breast so that the right hand reaches out to the neighbor on the left side and vice versa win the tune ends everyone rushes to the middle while still holding hands when the circle is re established everyone turns under the arms to end up facing outward with hands still joined in countries other than scotland. The hands are often crossed from the beginning of the song at variance with scottish custom. And did you know. The scottish practice was demonstrated by queen elizabeth second at the millennium dome celebrations for the year. Two thousand some press outlets berated her for not properly crossing her arms. She was unaware that she was incorrectly. Following the scottish tradition and because of its easy tune and melody it was also used as a song to signify for the war to end having the title. I wish the war was over and it was a popular anti-slavery song entitled fling out. The anti slavery flag both were using old anxiety as the basis for those songs. If you listen closely you can hear the song all lang sign and many movies too. Well did you know that these movies are we willie winkle a nineteen thirty seven. Shirley temple movie when her character sings to console a dying soldier. Mr smith goes to washington the nineteen thirty nine movie. Ocean's eleven the original of nineteen sixty as background music and the poseidon adventure one of my favorites that was made in nineteen seventy two ghostbusters and nineteen eighty nine. When harry met sally in nineteen eighty nine as well forrest gump in nineteen ninety four and elf and two thousand and three and most notably the very last song that is in the movie. It's a wonderful life with jimmy stewart. It is after all probably the best feel good ending in a classic movie ever with plenty of emotion for the main character at the last scene of the movie which brings george bailey the main character to tears as he acknowledges how great life really is and it is always at the stroke of midnight composer guy lombardi would play it on the radio and continued the tradition for fifty years afterwards. Dick clark took it up to play at the stroke of midnight on. Dick clark's new year's rocking eve. Every year and new york city as the big ball dropped at the stroke of midnight but after dick clark retired from the show ryan. Seacrest did the same at the stroke of midnight every year. They all had something in common with playing the song. It was an remembrance of those that came before and at the same time to mark the new year. All the fans and celebrators would sing along to the classic song so this year twenty twenty when the clock strikes. Twelve a m sing along to this classic song. Even if you don't know all the words we are indeed saying goodbye to twenty twenty

"Day So you're listening to this and I and I want what I want to do is I want to all of us to. I want to hear what you. I don't WanNa hear your New Year's resolutions nations. I don't WanNa hear your hopes and wishes in your dreams and your thoughts and your prayers please. None of that but I would love to hear. Is You declare something for twenty twenty the U.. That you make your declaration that I expect this to happen. I will will this to happen. I want this to happen. I'm going to be a participant in making this happen. Whatever that is it could be something really small? It could be something big. I mean I know a lot of you probably GONNA say GET RID OF DONALD TRUMP. Great that good. That's good to say more people say it. Think it act on it it will happen but But I think there's a lot of other things too that you could maybe Just share with the rest of us of what you'd like to see happen In this this country in the world it can be political. It can be not political. It can be. I think everything is political. Frankly but we'll get to that another podcast but But but it's it's you know Just I want you to share with all the other people listening right now. What you're going going to take a stand on what you're going to do Whatever that is it could just be something in your neighborhood could be something in? Your family could be something out in the garage. I you know I'm really open to hearing anything. That involves some sort of action in a declaration not a hope not a wish the resolution. But you know it's it's damn it I'm GonNa do this and I'm gonNA share it with a rumble audience a New Year's Day and And I'm going to. You'll have three ways to do this right now. Right after listening to this will be very quick won't take you a minute or two To make your declarations and have them Shared with the the people that are listening to this I'll give you a couple of ideas of what mine are for twenty twenty obvious. Maybe it's not so obvious. But number one President Bernie Sanders. My friends I'm so convinced this is our way out And and and we are going to have at least the chance to have a better life in a better country and in a more equitable society for everybody in this country. And who's living on this planet and as I said earlier about the climate climate emergency. We have no choice right now. We need a fighter. We need a fighter in the White House and in as I said also on a previous podcast this week. I'm not surprised that it's the young people. Fifty two percent of eighteen. To thirty five year olds are voting for Bernie Sanders. Fifty thirty two percent. Only two percent are voting for the person in their age group. The millennial Judge fifty two percent for Bernie. The youngest people want the oldest person running for president to be the president. What does that say So that's I'm GONNA work Very hard for that. Now I know some of you are not for Bernie here for Elizabeth Warren Wonderful Person. I've had her in two of my movies. You know and there are other people that are. I'm trying to you know it's the holidays I'm trying to be of good. Cheer here but But I I. I can't do that anymore now. It's to the first caucus in Iowa's is You know a little more than four weeks away. Hey so sorry that We're GONNA have to start talking honestly about Joe Biden and Mayor Pete I don't think anybody else's laughed. I hope Bloomberg is figuring out how to fund The candidates and good things and not be. I wasting his time running for president but we we need a fighter progressive in the White House and So but you know Bernie's person somebody else's go go to work get out there and work for them may cause you know this you can. You can make calls from whatever state you're in you can sign up for the campaign they'll send you a list of calls you can make all people you know not Robo calls this human being the human being and and tell them why they should vote for the candidate that year for just get involved in into I'm doing my end For Bernie I hope you can do it for Bernie but if you can't you can't All of these Democrats frankly I could say something good about all of the original twenty seven or whatever whatever there were a uh of them so what we had a good year here. We were lucky we had a good We had a diverse crowd running but the But nonetheless other still good people in this and there's one great person as far as I'm concerned that's Bernie Sanders. So that's my declaration. I want this year to end. Hearing the words words president elect Bernie Sanders my next declaration. Is that I'M GONNA go back to my Thirty minutes it's of walking every day If you remember a few years ago I started this thing Walk with bike and I don't know something like ten thousand people around the world going out for the my nightly walk with me wherever they were so. I'm going to start that again but I've got a new twist to it that I'll tell you about Later but the daily walk. Doc As I said earlier I think it's really important to get out there. Fresh Air Get outside move around. Do it with people I know I'm always happier when I'm moving let's see what else You know I think. In addition to what I said about young people I want to. I'm going to travel to a number of campuses The sheer and maybe. I'll try to go to so many schools also and M Be there and I'll speak but I wanNA listen to I really I want. I want young adults teenagers to know that. I'm I'm here to serve you. It's your future. That's being stripped from you and I Am One of the adults Who's going to do what you need done? What you want done and and go to work for you so whatever that means I'M GONNA try to book a number of campuses Around the country and do that and Maybe occasional highschool to because. I think it's really important to talk to high school kids. And that which which brings me to my next idea that I wanted to declare the voting age in this country should be sixteen. I know some of you are in our what yes. Teenagers are very bright these days. They know what's going on The Internet and everything else is made them much more aware of things they can look up anything in an instant and they are engaging they want to have a say they should because it's their future and all ready. A number of countries have lowered the voting age to sixteen Austria the voting age of sixteen When Scotland when they had the referendum there in in the UK They lowered the voting age. The sixteen Nicaragua it sixteen. Brazil is sixteen There's a number of countries now that are lowering the voting age because sixteen and seventeen year olds. Should have a say in what they are going to have to deal with when they become adults at eighteen and And in here's the good news in these countries where they've lowered the voting useless sixteen they They have found that the voter turnout between amongst eighteen to twenty five year olds is higher than in countries where the voting age is eighteen. Because if if you get kids starting to think politically act politically you know. Teachers bringing candidates in the classes having debates in high school Registering them to vote right there on the high school campus. Everybody's registered by the time. They're an adult. They've already been voting voting. They then will continue to vote. There's more likely that they will continue to vote because they've been voting since they were halfway through high school. I think it's just I know it's a crazy idea to some people. It probably sounds you know a lot of people you know Have a problem with with young people And but listen. I think this new generation. What's what they're called? Generation Z whatever. That's awful name. It's funny funny that the the key the Parkland kids told me we call ourselves the columbine generation. Because we've never known a day in school or we can score a month in school without an active shooter or drill. That's how we have had to grow up. We knew what to do regarding gunman in the school before we could read or write it. That's that's how these kids. This new generation has been raised and these teenagers these a young adults Man They're on fire and I I WANNA be down with them so I'M GONNA travel to schools. I'M GONNA speak at school so I'm GonNA listen at schools. We're GONNA do a political actions andom And I WANNA get the voting age lowered to sixteen and I. I'll talk about this other time. If you don't know this from reading my books or whatever that I was elected elected to public office when I was eighteen years old I was one of the first. Eighteen year olds in the country elected to office when the voting age was lowered to Eighteen back in the seventies and I think that I got me off on the right foot I think And I want to encourage others others to to do that and And then finally I'm declaring that Whatever savings I've been I've received from the trump trump tax cut tax bill tax. Cut for WHO I'm I'm all that money. I'm going to US news To help whatever movement whether I'm in the movement are somebody else's movement or whatever but That money is going to be used used for the greater good and to Undo Donald Trump and to get the tax rate. Put back up where.

"All right. That was very grand day with her song. This year seven rings seemed appropriate. A Dick Clark is gone by the way he's passed away. God rest of Sol but We just wanted to honor him in some sort of way tonight by referring to our special New Year's Eve show as a a Dick Dick Clark New Year's Rummenigge special. It just sounds just sounds right. So thanks for being with me here. We won't take up much of your time but let me just let tell you how I'm feeling. I actually think that this was a great year. I know a lot of people. Don't feel that way. it was a great year but the decade sucked. So let me explain what I mean by that. As far as the year goes my friends please. Regardless of all the bad that has happened all the bad. That's been done by trump and in our name and whatever. We impeached the president of the United States. That has only happened twice twice in our. You know two hundred and thirty plus year history. That is amazing. acing absolutely amazing and please take a moment and rejoice in the fact that that the we made this happen and I mean we the people because if you remember back at the beginning of the year The speaker of the House was very down on anybody talking about impeachment our our congresswoman from Detroit declared I think the evening of the first day of the new Congress grice That we going to impeach the motherfucker and you know that sounded right to most of the people I knew and it turned out it sounded right to the majority of Americans not a large majority. It's it is pretty much fifty fifty but the little bit on the side of impeaching a President Donald Donald J trump and. We went all the way from the beginning of the year from being told that we shouldn't be talking about impeachment. Just wait for the Mullahs report. The Ramallah report is GonNa that will bring him down and of course then. The Model Report Day happened. It was like what what wha-. Hello what is this you know I mean listen. Don't get me wrong there. Our incredible things in the report Incredible work but it didn't stop him or or Bring him down or didn't even attempt to remove him the fact that at the end of the year that we were able to impeach him I never would have thought that would have happened at the beginning of the year. So that right right right there. If nothing else had happened this year that makes it A great year and in the process of that the another great thing that happened is that what is that Nancy Pelosi who. I've never really been much of a fan of of hers. And she and I or not aligned politically but she became like a superhero once. She turned you know once. Remember remember member back at the at the beginning of the year She likened anybody who was for impeaching trump. She likened them to the people that a back act during the Clinton years used to say we need to prosecute Clinton for killing Vince. Foster remember her saying that I mean that was like wow You know she went after Representative Ilan Ilan. Omar said that she was things that she had said were she was anti Semitic she went are after the squad she told them all. You know to cool their jets. Ao C.. You know you're not. You're not the be all and end all ails. He it was. It was like. Oh brother everything that you always disliked about Nancy Z.. Pelosi and then boom you know but listen. She didn't have some epiphany What happened is you spoke up? You protested in your towns u Let Congress know that we wanted this man gone and and like a good and smart representative in the and the kind of smart that she is knowing you know which way the bread is buttered here. She knew that she had no choice. But to listen to the people she might have been able to dictate to certain members of Congress how to behave what to say or when to talk. But she wasn't going to dictate to the country and when the country said impeach the motherfucker. That's not really. The country talks by the way. If you're listening outside of America you know people are very play here and rarely rarely use any swear words but the country wanted him gone and she man man she is like the gate just opened and she went for it and I just you know by the end of this I really I wanted to start like gofundme page or something to raise the money to build a statue to her an place it somewhere in Washington DC. or Or. I don't know in Baltimore where she grew up the bay area that she represents and Mike if you lost your marbles here no no. I really think that it's important important that people that when we people we disagree with people who are not us when they do something good need to be thanked maybe even rewarded boarded. She was on fire. And I I just couldn't. I'm just so grateful. This was another great thing of twenty nineteen. I was there for the impeachment. I sat in the front row. I looked down over the proceedings. She'd come down onto the floor and was talking to some members right below where I was in this low overhanging Balcony sort of thing and she looked up and And she saw me and she waved and she put her hand over her heart. As if the say thank you it was. I did not expect that I. It was very powerful. She put her hands together in search of the praying hands. You know and just nodding and smiling and mouthing thank you to me and and then twenty minutes later she found she called. Her daughter texted her daughter. Was Documentary. Filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi and all of a sudden Alexandra's up in the balcony. Sitting there with me. My mom my mom said you were here was actually wonderful filmmaker and So we had a really good talk. How's it going for her mom and what's happening Said you know I kind of I believe your mom. And she says she praise as for trump and She smiled and she said Yeah. Yeah that's right I said I said I know I'm sort of you know I'm still a recovering Catholic in your mom. Tom Seems to be full blown Catholic so she says Oh. Yeah so you should have her on your podcast and start just without. Let her try to get you through your recovering part I said really think she'll come on this podcast just absolutely. Yeah but I've I've said things. Oh she doesn't listen to any of that you know she's happy you're here. She's she's happy that we are finally we. All of us are part of the majority of this country the majority of the didn't vote for trump. The majority that want him gone now the majority that you know the holiest the majority wants things to be different. So that's another good thing about twenty nineteen Nancy Pelosi newest member of the Justice League What else happened this year? There were there were some good movies. I loved book. Smart if a chance to see this movie by Livia Wild It's a wonderful film about two teenage girls last day of high school and They're not really the cool kids but they don't care and and And it's about their last day and night and all that's really really really wonderful film Especially now in this era around that people are paying more attention to young people. That's another great thing about twenty nineteen young people. Young people have risen up. It started outed really last year. I think with With the Parkland kids who pulled together put on the largest attended demonstration restriction in the history of our nation's capital and and and they didn't let anybody on the stage IV within a couple performance. They anybody speak Who who was an adult or wasn't a student high school or Middle School student? That was the hold them. That was the demonstration that was so cool adults be quiet. Listen to us o Ma'am and then this year gratitude Berg Greta and an all the kids around the world who go on strike every Friday from school to protest the fact that that the adults have ruined this planet and and they probably aren't going to survive. They're not going to live to see the end of their natural life. Perhaps because of the world that we've given them and that has been the most inspiring inspiring thing this year to see to see what Greta Stan to see. What all all any kids listening high school students middle school students college students? It's so powerful wonderful. You have to take the reins of power from us. I'm serious there is no hope for you. If you let us go go another four years another ten years calling the shots. That's not going to work. I mean first of all. You've seen the statistics and the polling. You know if you're under thirty five. The majority of you believe that. Socialism or some form of socialism is a better way to go then capitalism. Greedy greedy the ask. Capitalism has given us the world that we have you know it and you know that the adults the ones over thirty five over for over forty five especially NATO all. They don't want to give up the system that has sort of benefited them although really has it. It's tricked most of them. But you know enough of them snuck through to do well and and it will not change this issue of climate the climate crisis emergency.

All right. I mentioned that. I watched a lot of the New Year's Eve telecast, my wife, and I don't go out a New Year's Eve just too many idiots on the road. And we stay home ride the couch watch a little bit of the twilight zone marathon, but we tune into CNN and sometimes to FOX and sometimes the NBC ABC to see what they're doing to see what kind of entertainment programming, and it used to be that they would do programming that would have bands and some topical stuff in entertainment. Now, it's all about the anchors. You know? And I think the anchors have made it about themselves to the point where it's now nauseating. And we need to stop it. Dick, Clark used to percent music acts in dick Clark's rock and New Year's Eve, and then he would come on for the last ten minutes and count backwards and at the end his health prevented him from getting through it cleanly. But dick Clark has to be spinning in his grave after what we witnessed on NBC and on CNN on CNN. They all get drunk. They all sit there. Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen were doing shots of tequila and Anderson Cooper, Mr. privilege. You know, he's the son of Gloria Vanderbilt, a Vanderbilt and a very rich. But he had a platinum spoon in his mouth when he was born not a silver spoon. But he was talking. He and what's his name? Andy Cohen were talking with. Faye dunaway? They were interviewing fade down away. And these two guys they might be gay gentlemen. I'm I think they're both out. We're fascinated with her relationships with stars. And they wanted to know if she had a fares with all the actors like Warren Beatty and Paul Newman. Cetera. And they asked her about about Marlon Brando. And then they asked Faye Dunaway. It's gotta be now. Anyway, they asked her about Brando and instead of saying whether or not she had an affair with him. She took a classy road and talked about what a great performer. He was an Anderson Cooper, then put his mother's life on Front Street. And I think this just insane. And disgusting. Marlon brando? He's.

"Dick Clark ring in the new year with a family friendly celebration, lots of music and revelry something for just about everybody from the kids to grandma and grandpa. But those days are long gone as evidenced by the drunken debauchery and profanity that spewed from a good many New Year's Eve television shows CNN was the worst offender Anderson Cooper, Don lemon. Andy cohen. Randy kaye. They spent a good part of the night drinking vodka hoisting back shots of tequila and drinking champagne from a ball solo. Basically all of these New Year's Eve TV shows are designed for eighteen to twenty five year olds and they want the anchors to act accordingly. There's just one problem though with their programming philosophy. That crowd is not at home watching television on New Year's Eve. The rest of us are and we don't want to watch a fifty year old sloppy drunks acting the fool on national television. Happy new year.
