"Was taken back showing up five more years put on her sentence for escaping prison. Granted she had a life sentence plus fifty years but still what what. There's nothing like we add fifty years. You're still never getting out kind of thing. But i was just like man. She's at that point though it's like if she's someone like that's in that situation it's like why not try and escape. I'm sure that's what a lot of people like that. Have sentences it's like a. What have i got to lose. You know sure. So she was then extradited to the new jersey department of corrections and she since been moved around a couple of times but is currently serving out her life sentence in the valley state prison for women in california which is a high security prison. And she's you know. She's tried to make several appeals. All of them have been denied There is a rule that was put in place She will be eligible for parole after twenty five years or was eligible for parole after twenty five years And then if she gets denied every two years she can basically like reapply for being eligible for parole. She's been denied ever since but she was last eligible in late. Twenty twenty so. I'm sure she made another attempt. I also saw twenty twenty one as well so Yeah so. I'm not really positive. But regardless there could be some they coming up and it should be set to jersey because they were worried about the kids. This could you imagine the she finds those kids again like they get my you know because those kids now have to grow up the Danny and christie the ones who survived. Now they have to grow up original art. My mom's going to be in prison for the rest of her life entree worry now. They have to every two years have to worry about issue going to be let out on parole. That's that's a horrible thing to have to marinate in every two years have to worry about it not ideal. I don't think she share. Reveal it out but actually so when the prosecutor sentenced her originally the case was over that prosecutor adopted both kids which is kinda cool. It is kinda cool. You don't hear. Obviously you don't hear that often but all right last little kicker after the whole shooting prior to diane going to trial she was already charged interested. She got pregnant again and gave birth to a fourth child now. She gave birth to this child ten days before she was sentenced to life in prison. Obviously this child was taken away from her by the state. But the kicker is she got pregnant intentionally by a man on her postal route. Shoes up on postal delivery..

"That three little kids one died to almost i. Because that's this lady. This a he he was really put in a terrible situation. And i mean clearly dies down like we said. This was a nurture kind of thing. She was not mentally stable. She was not fit to be a mother clearly and she was diagnosed with things right. Yeah she was diagnosed with narcissistic histor- onic antisocial personality disorder. She was and i saw nothing that says she was like admitting to seeking help. It was a with narcissistic. Like you're not gonna get some. that's you know. Actively seeking help themselves. they're going to be. I do what i want my way. The right way things like that. So a and that's very hard to help someone in that scenario so especially for her to help herself Interesting fact though. So diane i for her sentencing. Diane was sentenced in february or excuse me arrested in february nineteen eighty-four. This was nine months after the shooting. Took place diane. Downs was arrested and charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder and criminal assault so chrissy actually made a really good recovery. She regained her ability to speak and testified against her mother in court so as an eight and nine year old. She's testifying against her own mother. That is a brave child and she testified in court saying that diane was the one who shot all three of them while they were parked on the side of the road and then shot herself in the arm which is why her injury was obviously a lot less intrusive and less fatal than the three children horrible so bringing us to june that's summer nineteen eighty-four dane was found guilty and she was sentenced to life in prison plus fifty years so essentially she was never getting out and she was locked away in the oregon women's correctional center and she was set to stay there for the rest of her life and that was supposed to be the end of her story and it was not and it was not so after being imprisoned for three years she decided she had enough and she escaped jail prison..

"Hop over the center council. Yeah and make things harder for myself. So yeah so that immediately does not line up and like i said the kids are shot with a twenty two. Now we see this all the time. That's very that's not like a rare gun by any means but diane did own a twenty two and so again the something they piece together. It's not enough to pin it on her but when they searched her home. There are unspent bullets. That have the same markings on them. Essentially the exact same ammo that was found at the scene. That's a little more suspicious so with that the we know the kids were shot with a twenty two. We know diane owned a twenty two and the same ammo was found in her home but the problem is the murder weapon was never recovered so whether she ditched it on the ride to the hospital or allegedly. It wasn't her whatever it may be. That was never recovered. Which is a huge missing piece. Because you know like in in a missing person or homicide you look for the body in a murder you look for the murder weapon which they didn't have so that didn't help him but again. They still had a lot of other stuff against her. So all in all diane is this single mom divorced with three kids. She's obsessed with robert knickerbocker and she is like. I said she was one of those people who she likes the attention and she likes to please so she can get more attention And she is clearly willing to go through a lot of lengths just to get what she wants and or provide someone else get that satisfaction of i'm pleasing somebody so investigators came to the conclusion that diane downs was so obsessed with this robert knickerbocker that she shot her own children. So that then to robert and diane could live happily ever after because robert did not want children so she went through all of that she willing to shoot oliver kids with the intention of killing them. Clearly because robert didn't want children also that her lover who was married they could be together. That is mentally unstable. It's unfathomable behavior like we said before in other children case child cases like there's so many different ways than to do faulk in this for sure. Yeah a lot of options. Yeah it's it's it's the worst. And i i mean how do you feel if your neighbor knickerbocker yet. I mean maybe you shouldn't have gotten involved with man in the first place. Yeah and he was. Actually that's interesting. You say that because he was not on board with this plan was like i'm glad she had moved away. I was not asking her to do this. I was not planning on being with her. I was actually you know reconvening over here with my wife trying to get rid of her and you know as a desperate attempt to please 'em i'll i'll attempt to murder all of my children tore -able and that's been some guilt on his hands and he didn't do nothing wrong but like that would fuck me up in like..

"One of the chrissy she was the eight year old and so the oldest of the three kids she so her and danny had both been shot but they were in life there in life threatening condition upon arrival. And now they're admitted to the hospital. Christie had suffered a stroke and so she was not able to speak. But as soon as diane walked in the room all the sudden you could just see in her is that it was like a deer in headlights. Her heartbreak started spiking severely. And the doctors put that together. Because obviously she can't give verbal cues so they're paying attention to all of our other senses her behavior and that was very much a huge stressor for her but she just couldn't verbalize that which they also reported that they gave that information to law enforcement as well so again she's kind of dealing with both what now one dead child to horan life threatening condition and she is now trying to line up media interviews and basically trying to get attention. She she's doing these interviews and instead of going to the media saying you know this is we went through this traumatic experience. This guy tried to carjack us. Shot my kids. He got yeah. Let's find him. Let's this is what he looks like. He's got shaggy hair more so it was. She went on the median. Like i'm innocent. It wasn't me. I have no idea who this man was. But it wasn't me wasn't me and to investigators they're like That's what you're focusing on right now. Granted i know we all know that the first people looked at are always the people closest. You got it so but again. She's going through this literally. Probably one of the most things you can go through unimaginable. And she's like again. She's worried about herself so they and this was against us proclaiming her innocence before she was even a suspect or a of interest in the case like very much just wanted to lay that down before anyone started asking questions and so when diane went in for questioning and she was talking to law enforcement about the whole thing she was giving really weird stories like i said they were going sightseeing but it was nighttime and the kids were asleep in the car or there is just like really weird stories. They were not adding up. She couldn't give a clear description other than this guy. Had shaggy hair of this guy and it was just there was not a clear story going on and she was basically kind of just sitting there like. Oh they're you know they're going to believe me all over the place right. She was really all over the place and that was not lost on law enforcement. This something something some s. yeah..

"And instead of you know ripping the kids out of the car ripping around the car taking the car. He shoots all three kids point blank inside of the car and then flees so what a tragic tragic situation three kids in a car carjacked. Yeah i mean he had a description they had like a a setting so this was This this is what happened right. Allie According to diane according to diane so following those shootings these kids get shot. Like i said all three of them at point blank. They were shot with a twenty two caliber. Which is important to remember following the shooting. Diane being the loving concerned mother that she is sped off towards the hospital with now three kids bulletin side. All of them blood spattered all over the car. This is clearly life or death situation. She sped off to the hospital at a whopping five miles per hour so no urgency. Now keep in mind there in the middle of nowhere. Yeah exactly and well we go on. You're gonna find out that that was a big piece of evidence in this case but yeah so that set the scene. So they're they're going to the hospital five five miles per hour by get to the hospital so basically. She was idling to the hospital and they arrive at the hospital. Diane herself was also injured in this attack. And the carjackers shot her in the left forearm. Leaving her with basically a glorified a scrape on her arm. It just grazed her skin but of course this was like a huge deal because she like quote unquote got shot so immediately upon arrival they get to the hospital and diane was suspiciously calm after just experiencing all three of your children getting shot inside your car. She was just like cools cucumber. And that's ended up itself again. That's something that ended up. Itself is not a crime when you piece it together with all the other things that were going on. She didn't know for kids were dead. She didn't know if her kids were going to make it out alive. And she was just kind of chilling but upon upon arrival cheryl was pronounced dead. So now you've got one dead kid. She was the seven year old. So i've got danny who's three and christie. Who is eight one of the first things diane does when she gets to the hospital. Is you think you'd be obviously you know. Panicking army is gonna make it. Okay like freaky now. Trying to patch the scrape on your arm. Now she Finds the phone to call a man robert knickerbocker who is a married man which she is having an affair with so again huge traumatic incident. The first thing she decided to do is make a call to her lover. Suspicious so investigators and people were starting to pick up on her suspicious behavior. And i this is. This is just not lining up for me. And they were even more suspicious of diane's quote unquote carjacking story when diane went to visit kristie for the first time now kristie had suffered a stroke and she was yet the children's are yep.

"Go do it. Art alley diane downs. Okay before we begin. Eddie how do you say the state oregon. Thank you yes. I'm sorry for her. Everyone's ears. I was i caught. So much flack after either a last episode episode before that Knows i five killer episode where we were going through oregon washington california so many people say that it has to be pronounced oregon. Gin yeah figured you got some gin people who do have some people. It's spelled with. No so i'm going as well. Let's look at me pronouncing things right for one. That's i mean. I guess it's just different different ways of saying it all right now that we've established that spoiler alert are cases in oregon and we are back so diane downs born august seventh fifty five was sentenced to life in prison after she attempted to murder all three of her children by shooting them at point blank range inside of her car in the spring of nineteen eighty-three. So first starters. Diane like a lot of the other criminals that we've talked about grew up in a very toxic home. She alleged that her father molested her at an early age. So right off the bat we've got a nurture versus nature situation. After graduating high school. She actually enrolled in a baptist college that was in california but she ultimately got expelled for promiscuity. So so it's like Byu type of school than i guess she. Yes she got kicked out This very much plays into the person comes while she was very. I'm focused on herself. She loved male attention. And not that that makes you a criminal but it plays into how we got from point a to point b here so blows boola school for promiscuity like what are we. I know no matter of that. What's his steel at the school alvin in the eighties. It was certainly a different time. But yeah still sucks. There's also a baptist. College shows like a religious college. And i am sure that had something to do with it and i that could mean a lot of different things like you know. Was she a porn star or was she wearing spaghetti. Strap tank top. I think thursday colleges across the nation. Like you can't hold hands right and shit like that so it could have been something much less than your premise quality..

"Police been gathering evidence enough evidence that they think it's time for another interview with Diane and in this one. The story completely changes. Diane now, stating that they're really to people that confronted her and even called her out by name. First I. Police decided to bring Diane downs for another interview. Detectives are no longer being Mister Nice. Guy Playing hardball. Okay! We're now back on team. Sixteen eleven hours present here. Here's Elizabeth Diane downs. You know what I love I love for the perpetrator changes their story. It was the time that we decided to take on and seriously challenger on the inconsistencies in her story. Your story stink. This whole thing. It's. Beginning home phone. We no longer have some sort of by the chance happenstance horrific crime on the side of a road. We have a conspiracy. The story had morphed into two suspects, and they referred to her by name. And then somehow she said I think there was somebody that. You changed by saying that this guy new you now your tattoo. About you. He threatened you. Much I remember. There was no reason for you not to say that at the very beginning. I understand when witnesses or victims add onto their story. They tell you something. They've never said before, but to change your story. That is a horse of a different color. Theme here looking at me phased down. I have another had smoking a cigarette ninety miles an hour tasting. Study. That's for sure. You'll be what you do Diane. And I wouldn't change it because my kids are not always took the back. One of the keys interviewing somebody is you've got to keep the tension up. Stress them out to the point where. The eventually get to the truth, which clearly does not happen with Diane, but that's the goal. Is If You'RE GONNA take. You Than The interview went for approximately two hours, and towards the end there, her frustration level was rising. You can find. Sneaking Church. For the next twenty five. Real obvious. That I, didn't do it. Diane thought that she was too smart for us and that there was anything that could trip. Come on Diane. It's your turn back. On the phone. Allegation. Did? You do know who did A. Damn sure. You know buying your. Revolt. Brad my arm and yanked my arm out and shoot my arm and said now you. And I. Did. Time is now seventeen. Sticks. And Diane is just a part of the office including. She ended up storming out. There was enormous public pressure to arrest Diane downs. People no longer bother story. The days before the Internet, but believe me it's tremendous amount of pressure being placed especially sheriff to make an arrest, there was no arrest for a long time because the DA in this case really wanted to talk to the only surviving witness who was old enough to tell them what happened. The weight on the arrest was the result of wanting Christie to be healthy enough to testify after the stroke. Difficulty speaking time is on our side, especially the recovery of Christie. Let's not trade certainty of a convection, just flooding expediency of getting arrest. At, first Christie couldn't speak all, and then she was afraid to talk. The therapists working with Christy asked her to write down on a piece of paper, the name of the person who had shot her. He said Oh put it in an envelope. And then you can put it in my fireplace in will burn it. And that went on for a very long time and every time she'd write a name down then Shit, throw it in the fireplace. When she was ready to talk about it, they would open and when they did of course. Slip of paper said. My Mom. Dan was indicted and once that indictment came down, it was time to prepare visit. Diana's arrested on February twenty eighth nineteen eighty four nine months after she shot her children. Seeing Diane immediately after the arrest, and even there were photographs of her. She was acting like time looking adoring. Lee at the deputies who were escorting her didn't seem shocked. Traumatized still was bathing in the spotlight afforded to her while. She's been outsca free for so long. She was uncharged suspect for nine months. It was like something out of a bad made for TV movie. You have the defendant in the murder trial walking in very determined to prove she's innocent. And, very very. Trees been charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault in the first degree. We have to convict this. No she did it. Finally after months and months and months and no resolution, there is an arrest and Diane downs heads to try. And she's hugely pregnant, so it's an unbelievable spectacle. I imagined the dichotomy. She's accused of killing her children and she's pregnant with another one. Full of visual, it's just counterintuitive. Lady Madonna with her blonde hair and the blue maternity dress, and the big belly, and everything about or screams, motherhood and softness and nurturing. The idea that Diana pregnant is visibly pregnant during the trial is not particularly helpful for the prosecutors. What was the jury supposed to think? It wants to send a pregnant law to jail for life. The courtroom was packed every single day. It was kind of mayhem every morning. There must.

Twenty-seven-year-old? Diane downs arrived at McKenzie Willamette hospital in a blood SP. Battered Nissan pulsar with her three young children all four members of the Downes family had been shot, although Diane had only a bullet wound in her arm. Her children all clung to their lives as doctors rushed to save the kids and the police arrived to investigate they all noticed that something was off about Diane. She was calm almost wooden and seemed more concerned with the pain from her wounded arm than the well-being of her own children. She immediately made a phone call to her lover lewiston instead of checking in with the children's father Steven Downs. And as her children sat at the precipice of death. Diane didn't hesitate to leave the hospital with the police to show them the scene of the crime. They found several other pieces of disturbing evidence. Neighbors worried that Diane neglected her children. She threatened gun violence before and had an unhealthy obsession with Lou. A man who did not want children. Detectives quickly arrived at a singular conclusion Diane had shot her own children. Then turned the gun on herself to mask her crime. When Lou was interviewed he provided a clear motive telling police, I think Diane shot her children because of me, and I'm frightened. Picture a murderer a gangster a thief. Did you picture a woman? She rebelled against her upbringing wearing more fashionable clothing and cutting her hair short when she was fifteen. She started dating the boy across the street. Steven Downs in nineteen Seventy-three eighteen year old Diane married, Stephen to appease her father, while the marriage was ultimately an unhappy one. It did bring Diane the greatest joy of her life motherhood. She had three biological children Christie born in nineteen seventy four Cheryl born in nineteen seventy six and Danny born in nineteen Seventy-nine as well as a surrogate child in nineteen eighty two. But while she enjoyed the attention that came from being pregnant, she was often disa-. Appointed an overwhelmed by the realities of raising children, Diane struggle between fantasy and reality was exacerbated by her psychological issues, including history, onic personality, disorder and difficulty expressing emotions in a healthy manner. She greatly inflated the importance of her relationship with Lew lewiston, what he considered a casual fling. She believed was true undying love. She thought it was love worth sacrificing everything for on the night of the shooting may nineteenth nineteen Eighty-three. Detective Doug Welsh interviewed Iran at MacKenzie will Emmett hospital. Welsh was the responding officer that night, and this was his first homicide case. Diane told welched that she and her children had gone to visit her friend and Mark cola. A nearby town in Oregon on their way, home she decided to take a longer route that was more scenic, even though it was growing. Dark as she drove her three sleeping children down old mohawk road a deserted country road near the mohawk river, a shaggy-haired man flagged her down making her stop the car. Diane got out to ask what he wanted. And he demanded she gives him her keys when she refused. The man snapped pushed her to the side reached into the car and shot the sleeping children, Diane then pretended to throw her car keys in the direction of the riverbank to divert the gunman's attention. They struggled for a moment. And he shot her in the arm, but she managed to get back in the car and race away to the hospital. Parts of the story didn't make sense to Welsh he said, quote, sightseeing when it's pitch blackout, and why are the kids fatally or near fatally wounded and she being right handed shot in the left arm. I mean think about it. She's the biggest threat to him not three sleeping children and quote. In addition, Diane's. Count of the events on mohawk road were inconsistent. She told Welsh the man was bushy-haired. Then said that he wore a ski mask. I she said that they were attacked by one man. But then she said there had been two then reverted back to one her evolving narrative is consistent with pathological lying. The common symptom in those diagnosed with histrionic personality disorder like Diane the nest going to take over on the psychology here. And throughout the episode. Please note Vanessa is not a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist, but she has done a lot of research for the show. Thanks, according to Dr Mark d Griffiths patients with HP will often lie as a way to enhance or facilitate their dramatic and attention seeking behavior in this case with the dozens of police and doctors in the hospital focused on her Diana justed, her story to appear more dramatic as needed while. "Shocked. Back in Oregon. Diane wrote in her diary as if nothing had changed. She continued to obsessively right to Lou in her diary, and then very suddenly the tone of her diary entries shifted two weeks after her trip to Arizona, Diane's children Christie, Cheryl, and Danny became the focus of each day's entry on may eleventh. Diane wrote, quote will sweetie. I love talking to you. But I have my own life here. I have three beautiful children that I love more than anyone else. I think I even loved them more than you now, and quote, Diane was prone to big mood swings. But this shift in focus from Luda, her children in her diary was one of her biggest Diane's writing made. It seem like she had just discovered her children as if she hadn't been mothering them for years. The next few days of diary entries read like attribute to. Motherhood. Diane rights of trips to the beach and playing lots of games with her kids things she hadn't done with them before yet along with the pleasant memories. There's a frantic anxiety Diane's writing she writes that she found a brass unicorn that she gave her children and insisted on getting it in grave with a may nineteen Eighty-three date. What did she need to memorialize perhaps Diane was simply dedicated to being a good mother to her children or perhaps Diane was so frantic. Because she knew that these were the last days before the downs. Children's lives would be destroyed in hindsight. It's clear the Diane's manic obsession with her children was leading right up to the day that they were shot on may nineteenth nineteen Eighty-three was Diane downs. Just an emotionally stunted mother whose children fell victim to a tragic but random crime or was Diana wounded woman push. A horrific lows all in the name of feeding her obsession with love. Now back to the story in the summer of nineteen eighty Diane divorced Steven Downs. And her new boyfriend MAC Richmond and his two daughters quickly moved in. But MAC soon realized that Diane was not the person she had appeared to be at work. Diane was lighthearted and fun at home. She was angry and cruel. According to MAC, she often called her children to meaning names. She would fund the children off to babysitters or if a babysitter couldn't be found. She would leave six-year-old Christie in charge. A neighbor reported that Cheryl would often go to her house asking for food because her mother hadn't fed her. And she didn't know where Diane was by the fall of nineteen eighty one Mack had had enough of Diane, and he left her, but Diane had other things on her mind while she was with MAC she had been matched with a family looking for. A surrogate? And now it was finally time to go to Kentucky and get inseminated. Diane easily conceived and she went back home to Arizona as happy as could be literally filled with new life. Diane was always happiest when she was pregnant, and this time was no exception. But while Diane was on a high her children were not faring quite as well. According to neighbors and Diane's co workers, the mistreatment MAC. Observed was not uncommon. Diane often left the children alone. Dress them improperly for winter, weather and occasionally hit them. But Diane didn't think she was doing anything wrong. She saw herself as a good mother. Someone who was meant to bring children into the world. Diane surrogate pregnancy went off without a hitch. She gave birth to a baby girl and gladly relinquish the child to her new parents in Kentucky in the summer of nineteen eighty two Diane then returned to AirAsia bought a mobile home for her and her children and continued working at the post office. Not only was the post office a steady source of income for Diane. But it also provided her with a steady roster of lovers. Diane seduced, many of the men who worked with her at the post office almost all of them married. But none of these relationships lasted very long. Diane struggled with intimacy, and though she was easily available in flirtatious at the start of these relationships. She would always eventually release her facade and pushed the men away that is until she began her affair with Louis Stanton. Lewiston lewiston, his wife, Nora moved to Chandler, Arizona in the fall of nineteen Eighty-one their marriage was on the rocks. They'd been living in Texas, but Nora had convinced him to move to resign aware. She had grown up. Lou was not happy to have been uprooted. And so when he got a job at the post office and met Diane there he was happy to have a distraction from his wife lose marriage to Nora was his second. And during his pre. Marriage. He had a fares those had been easy going flings. And so he thought a brief unattached affair with. Diane might make him feel better about his situation. He saw their interactions as lighthearted and carefree, Diane. However, did not she became intensely infatuated with Lou who had no understanding of the obsession that lay underneath Diane, smiling facade. Lou and Diane's affair progressed into more serious territory throughout the first half of nineteen eighty two. Diane kept diary and in it. She methodically marked down all the days. She saw Lou those days became more and more frequent Diane was tightly wound pending all her hopes for happiness on him. She wrote in her diary about Lou every day, referring to what she felt as pure love and heart love her obsession with Lou grew with no limit incite as someone with a history on. Personality disorder the attention. Lou gave Diane was everything she needed to feel appreciated and truly alive. When Lou pulled away even the slightest bit Diane made sure to draw him back in Stephen reached out to Diane to reconcile their relationship and Lou told her to go back to her ex husband, but Diane would hear nothing of it. She only wanted Lou and Lou was not strong enough to deny her. So their affair continued. In the fall of nineteen eighty two Diane traveled to Kentucky to be inseminated as a surrogate mother again this time, she did not conceive, but she wasn't too upset about it. She was more concerned with getting back home to Lou. Anyway, however, when her plane arrived in Arizona, Lou wasn't waiting for her at the gate instead she found Stephen. And she grew hysterical. A couple of weeks earlier. Diane Stephen had had a physical fight over possibly reconciling. Stephen wanted her Diane wanted Liu needless to say, Stephen was absolutely the last person. She wanted to see when she landed in Arizona on the drive home. Diane began scraping at her face and kicking him due to Diane's history onic personality disorder. She often had rapidly shifting emotional states. That didn't have a hold in reality in her head Stephen's presence meant that Liu had abandoned her. And she went beserk, Steven and Diane return to Diane's home where she locked herself in the bathroom with a gun. Diane threatened to kill both herself. And Stephen a gun fired behind the closed bathroom door, Stephen was terrified. He slammed into the door and busted open only to find Diane sitting on the edge of the bath tub in front of a bullet hole. She had created in the floor Stephen grabbed the gun from her. She wasn't harmed. But Dan was deeply depressed. She had given everything to Lou and she felt abandoned by him when she didn't see him at the airport. Diane didn't feel abandoned for long though. Even though he tried to break things off multiple times, Lou repeatedly returned to Diane. Liu and Diane had an odd back and forth, a passionate pod to do that was both confusing and captivating Lou told her he wouldn't leave his wife, but he was still drawn to her and found it hard to let her go. In lose own words, quote, no one could believe how that woman could talk could promise and cokes and argue unless you've been involved with her I was with her all the time. She talked and talked and she hardly ever took a breath and quote one night in February nineteen Eighty-three. Diane got close to winning Lou for good. Diane wrote in her diary quote. I could hardly believe my ears today. Loose said he would live in the same house with my kids in me. Of course, then he said he would have to marry my ass. But before I get too excited. A wait awhile. He could change his mind. I hope he doesn't I sure love him. And quote, Lou was us. Really one to avoid conflict. So it's likely that he simply gave her a waffling answer to a proposal without meaning to truly commit during this time with Lou Diane wrote in her diary with a very immature tone several entries detailed how she knew deep in her heart that Liu's wife Nora was the one standing in the way of her relationship. Diane seemed to truly believe this even though Lou himself had told her that he wanted to remain married to his wife, but Diane still wrote that she cherished all the moments loose stole away to be with her. Citing the fact that they were in pure love. Diane also wrote about how she would spend hours watching music videos on MTV, a TV network that at the time played music videos for most of the day and was targeted at teenagers. She claimed that many of the songs reminded her of her relationship with Lou and she would play the songs over and over thinking of him like a schoolgirl with a crush irrational. Thought is a major symptom of history on personality disorder and Diane was clearly not thinking rationally at this point. Diane, even got a tattoo in honor of her love and devotion to lewiston. She had her right shoulder emblazoned with a huge red rose a symbol, she meant to represent the pure love. She in lieu shared his name framed the bottom of the image. Diane's rationale was that. Now, if another man ever looked at her he would see lose Mark on her and know that she belonged to him. Diane desperately wanted Lou to get a matching tattoo to signify that they belong to each other. But Liu refused Diane's tattoo made him uncomfortable. And he did not want to Mark himself the same way. In early nineteen Eighty-three Lou took a trip to Texas without telling Diane Diane took this to mean that Liu had left her for good, and she was absolutely distraught. She left to action Diane requested a job transfer from the post office in Chandler, Arizona to a post office in Oregon where her parents west and willing we're living, but Lou was only gone for a two week vacation. When he returned to resign ah, he resumed his affair with Diane. And she was thrilled to reunite they were once again happy together. But now there was a cloud hanging over them Diane's transfer request had already gone through. And she was set to leave for Oregon in two and a half weeks. Loose seem devastated to see Diane go, he even gave her his gold chain and asked her to wear it. He said it would Mark her as lose woman as their days together in Arizona trickled away loose other relation. Ship through rose tinted glasses. Diane was good to him. And he'd missed having her there to dote on him and take care of him. He even agreed to get a rose tattoo that match Diane's his was placed on his left arm. He still wouldn't get Diane's name tattooed on his skin. But the rose was enough for Diane to believe that they'd be able to be happy together, an Oregon Lou never fully committed to going to Oregon with Diane though, he once claimed that he repeatedly told her if it's meant to be it will be Diane believed. It was meant to be. She left for Oregon lose necklace dangling around her neck confident that Lou would be close behind her and initially he may have planned to follow Diane north. But once she was gone no longer buzzing around him Lou began to see his life with newfound clarity. He realized he didn't wanna be with Diane and was determined to save his marriage. Diane called Lou and. In packages, but he tried to avoid her. He ignored her calls and refused. Her male. He even sent back a package of roses unopened, but Diane was undeterred she obsessively wrote in her diary, pending long letters to Lou that she would never actually send. She wrote. Nobody else can fill your empty place in my bed or my heart. I guess I really have been bewitched. I wish you'd come around. Diane believed that Oregon was a paradise where she in lieu could finally be happy together. She continued to contact Lou until mid April nineteen eighty three when he finally called her to say it was over some while back. Diane had lent Lou five hundred dollars. And she said she would know their relationship was truly over once she received the money back. Lou wrote her a check for the full amount and mailed it to lose the prize. Diane cash the check when she didn't even call to save. Thank you. He hoped that the affair was finally over until she showed up in Arizona on April twenty eighth nineteen Eighty-three one week since Liu told Diane it was officially over in a statement. Diane gave the police later. She said she took off the gold chain and told Liu it's not mine to keep. And if you don't want me, if you don't want me to be lose woman anymore than I shouldn't have it loo- told her he wasn't going to go to Oregon, but he didn't want to be a father. Diane said she loved him. They stood staring at each other for a bit. And then just went their separate ways. Lou continued with his life in Arizona and Diane went back to Oregon the next time. They'd speak would be when Diane called Lou from the hospital the night. Her children were shocked.

"Sent her back to Stephen she also spent time with her sister in flagstaff Arizona and at one point she ran off with her daughters to stay with her uncle in Texas, Stephen only discovered this by looking at their phone bills and noticing that Diane had made several calls to Texas before she left. Despite this Iraq behavior, the couple remained married. Stephen would take Diane back when she ran away and Diane would ignore Steven's infidelity. They were unhappy. But they couldn't afford to divorce. In nineteen seventy seven the family of four was settled in Mesa. Arizona, and it was while living in Arizona that Diane had a revelation. She was visiting a fair where there was a right to life booth. She saw an image of a fetus at six weeks and Diane was reminded of her own abortion, which also occurred at six weeks that image showed a fetus with the beginnings of body parts forming something hit Diane. She saw this fetus as a person and suddenly felt that her aborted fetus had been a human being that she killed in a two thousand study by the American Medical Association. Researchers found that women with a history of depression and other issues with mental health were more likely to have negative emotions related to their abortions, including regret, they also found that younger women and women who had multiple children at the time of their abortion were more likely to have negative feelings. About their abortions, pre existing mental health issues young age, and multiple children were all factors for Diane seeing that image of fetus at the right to life booth likely triggered negative feelings about her abortion feelings that she struggled to shake another study performed at the university Tae day to lose the second in France in two thousand eleven found that six weeks after having an abortion thirty eight percent of women reported potential post traumatic stress disorder. According to the National Institute of mental health post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is a stress disorder that some people develop after a shocking scary or dangerous event. People affected by it will often react with frightening or irrational thoughts and other symptoms of anxiety. Diane became anxious and projected distorted ideas and feelings onto her unborn. Fetus, Diane gave that unborn? Fetus, name Kerry Kerry became an obsession for Diane. She decided that she needed to replace Carey she needed to conceive again in nineteen seventy eight when the downs were living in Mesa. Arizona. Diana, Stephen to have his Secta me reversed. But he refused. She continued to pester him for a year. And he continued to say, no, but Diane was never one to let anything stand in the way of what she believed would make her happy. She wasn't going to let stevensville Secta me stop her from having another child. She would just have to find another way to obtain sperm. Diane was working as an electrician for the palm harbor mobile home company while she was often more roasts at home. Diane came alive at work. She was fun and flirty and she. Garnered the attention of many of her male co-workers she had several fairs with men at work all in the name of genetic research. Diane selected one man who she found to be a good specimen as she put it nineteen year old Russ Phillips. She began an affair with him and the new couple easily conceived a baby Stephen knew right away that the baby wasn't his both Stephen and Russ encourage Diane to have an abortion. But Dan would hear none of it? She wanted to be pregnant and she wanted this baby on December twenty ninth nineteen seventy nine Diane gave birth to a boy, Stephen agreed to raise the baby as his own, and despite his earlier protestations, he immediately loved the little boy, Diane Stephen named the baby Stephen Daniel downs and called him Danny for short, Diane. However was shocked that she had given birth to a boy where was. The daughter. She was supposed to be bringing back to life. Where was her Carey? According to the National Institute of mental health PTSD is often accompanied by depression, Diane had seen giving birth to a baby girl as a solution to the trauma. She was feeling when she failed to do. So and instead gave birth to Danny. She was distressed and depression set in with Danny's arrival to the down home also came another wave of sadness for Diane as happy as she had been when she was pregnant, she was deeply unhappy as a wife and mother Diane would grow frustrated when her children couldn't provide her with the unconditional perfect love. She so desired she often lead out her sadness and rage on her children. Diane admitted to grabbing her children by the shoulders and screaming at them often. In Diane's words from her nineteen eighty two essay about abuse quote. I wish we could stop this vicious cycle. If we. Could only take a whole generation and stop child abuse. We could wipe out the plague and quote. One day in April nineteen eighty while. Diana and her family of five we're living in Chandler, Arizona. She watched a segment on the Donahue show that featured people who had participated in or were looking for a surrogate parent one woman was infertile and wanted to use her husband's sperm to have a surrogate mother bear her husband's child, Diane remembered, the joy, she felt during her pregnancies, and it dawned on her she could be the surrogate. This couple was looking for. She wrote the Kentucky surrogate parenting clinic listed on the show. She told them she was the perfect candidate to be a surrogate mother. Of course, Diane lied and omitted facts in order to paint, the portrait of herself as a vision of motherhood. She claimed that her abortion had actually been a miscarriage and that her marriage was solid. It worked on paper. Diane seemed like the ideal surrogate mother and the clinic moved forward with Diane and the selection. Process. Diane was ecstatic not only to find out that she'd be moving forward, but that surrogates paid ten thousand dollars that would be enough for her to move out and finally leave Stephen the next step in the surrogacy process was going through psychiatric evaluation to make sure that Diane was mentally capable of having a child and giving it away after examining her. The first psychiatrist was doubtful that Diane would be up to the task that psychiatrist wrote in his report that there was considerable neurotic interplay in Diane's total adjustment to life. And so he recommended further testing ten standard tests were administered on Diane. She excelled in the acute tests and placed in the superior range of intelligence. However, she did not do so well on tests where she was supposed to show social cause and effect reasoning the clinical psychologist administering this battery of tests wrote that the findings were. Consistent with but not absolutely diagnostic of a major psycho pathology. Basically, it seemed like Diane had psychological problems. But it was unclear what exactly those problems were. She was an enigma to the examiners in the report the examiners wrote a clear cut neurotic picture is not present this individual has poor ability to express anger in a modulated fashion and tends to have poor behavioral controls in January nineteen Eighty-one the testing continued with another psychiatrist this time. The doctor noted that Diane was hyper talkative, and she could shut her motions on and off at will. She was also diagnosed with history onic personality disorder, according to the DSM five people with history on personality disorder are prone to overly seek attention. And to overreact to situations. They often feel unappreciated when they're not the center. Of attention and will go to great lengths to seek approval this attention seeking may be acted out in odd ways such as overt sexual seductiveness with inappropriate partners. Diane had already demonstrated inappropriate sexual relationships with co workers and her determination to be a surrogate was clearly her way of seeking attention and feeling important yet despite this diagnosis Diane past her psychiatric evaluation. She had been approved to be a surrogate mother now all Diane had to do was wait to be matched with a family wall. Diane waited to be paired with a couple and -ticipant at a ten thousand dollar paycheck her own marriage. Finally, dissolved after years of their rocky relationship. Diane Stevens divorce was filed and finalized in nineteen eighty with little fanfare it ended not with a bang, but with a whimper, but Diane was not without a partner for long. In fact, wants her marriage was over she had a string of lovers. Diane had told several psychologists and psychiatrists during her battery of tests that she disliked sex. So most likely she didn't move from man-to-man because she got any real pleasure from them. Instead, she constantly pursued new relationships because she desired attention from his many people as possible at this point. Diane worked as a postal worker for the Chandler post office. And she met one boyfriend their MAC Richmond in the summer of nineteen eighty one two weeks after Stephen moved out MAC and his two daughters, moved in however, MAC found that Diane was a completely different person at home than she was at work. He soon found her to be a cruel nasty mother and mentally unstable. It was a glimmer into the side of Diane that would soon drive her to murder. Next will meet the lover who would turn Diane deadly. Diane was determined to find another way to attain the singular love and devotion that Stephen denied her without telling Stephen she easily became pregnant in nineteen seventy four at age nineteen and was ecstatic during her pregnancy Diane felt serene and complete. She described her fetus as pure love, something that was an extension of herself. And that happiness continued when Diane's first child Christie. Ann was born Diane was truly happy. But. The more. She loved Christie the more. She was repulsed by Stephen. Stephen bounced from job to job and the family's financial situation was shaky Stephen would often send Diane and baby Christie to Wes and willing because he couldn't afford to take care of them. Old mohawk road is a winding two lane road, just outside Springfield, Oregon trees, lined the road, providing a shadowy canopy at night. It gets specially dark and quiet with only the occasional car passing through. It's the kind of road you might not want to be stuck on alone. After the sun's gone down dangerous strangers might be lurking. So on the night of may nineteenth nineteen Eighty-three when a slender young blonde rushed into McKenzie Willamette hospital claiming that she and her three children had been shot on old mohawk road. It was a nightmare. Come true. The young woman a twenty seven year old named Diane downs said that a shaggy-haired man had flagged her down and demanded her car when she denied him her keys. Stephen went out and didn't come home until three AM claiming that his car had broken down. But Diane knew what he was really up to Diane had married. Stephen to get the love and attention.
