"1.3% More on markets in 15 minutes Juliet Thank you Doug 35 minutes pass the out time for global news The Baden administration tried to clarify the president's stance on potential military aid to Taiwan if China invades let's get to Ed Baxter in San Francisco with the details it Yeah exactly right Juliet so far as many questions if not more than when he said it Let's go through here This was during a news conference in Japan So first let's listen to the question second the Biden response and then analysis from Bloomberg Stephen engels Are you willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if it comes to that Yes You are That's the commitment we made Now that commitment he's talking about is the Taiwan relations act which essentially spells out justification for the United States to provide military support for Taiwan in the event of an attack presumably from China not necessarily troops on the ground And he did clarify he says the policy has not changed at all but he did go on to say it I will quote him The idea that it Taiwan can be taken by force is just not appropriate It will dislocate the entire region and be another action similar to what happened in Ukraine Now China's foreign ministry spokesman and denouncing the comments and saying the U.S. should not send the wrong message on Taiwan to avoid causing grave damage to bilateral relations And this U.S. senator John Tom cotton says the Biden administration needs to clear up the Taiwan strategy and be guilty in general Saying with a clear pre written policy statement China's primarily coaching is sent a message to new Australia prime minister Anthony albanese Congratulating him on his win and saying that China wants to uphold the principle of mutual respect and development of China Australia strategic partnership Meanwhile Bloomberg's Paul Allen and Sidney says the new prime minister Anthony albanese has been working the phones with UK prime minister Boris Johnson He also spoke with President Biden over the weekend made similar assurances where expected to hear him reaffirm commitment to the quad arrangement as well which is something previous labor governments have been a little bit lukewarm about And yes on the topic of climates the albanese administration and the Biden administration's policies much more closely aligned there and Albany expected to seek U.S. support for Australia hosting a UN climate summit Yeah and the coordinations meet today in Japan Well Beijing receiving some better news cases of actually COVID dropped day to day The report now 48 local cases for May 23rd and Shanghai no new cases outside the quarantine area In San Francisco I met Baxter this is Bloomberg our Bryant SERP And thanks very much 38 minutes past the hour It's time for world sport Let's get to Dan Schwartzman Dan's telling us that it's a wild first round in the French Open Dan usually that means upsets Yeah lots and lots of upsets in this one This was mind-blowing frankly First round action look at the names who are out four time Grand Slam winner now and we also got he's out in straight sets to American Amanda nissim ova meanwhile Last year's winner in both singles and doubles two C barber Cred jacoba loses in three sets to Diane Perry Meanwhile 5th seat on net cultivate is knocked out in straight sets The only one well you guys found tech continues to roll the topsy does no trouble advancing to the second round Looking at the men's draw top seed and Novak Djokovic advancing in straight sets as does 5th seed Rafa Nadal Killing a BAPE speaking at a press conference for the first time since shocking the soccer world by snubbing Real Madrid and signing a new contract to remain with Paris Saint-Germain for the next three years says the decision wasn't you know financially motivated but it's the direction of the club.

And not <Silence> superficial <SpeakerChange> <Silence> <Speech_Male> will <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> i get that and i <Speech_Male> think that goes it. <Speech_Male> Goes a bit deeper <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> back to the fashion <Speech_Male> thing you know. <Speech_Male> People don't <Speech_Male> really <Speech_Male> sometimes. They don't make <Speech_Male> the connection. Fashioned <Speech_Male> really is <Speech_Male> the <Speech_Male> basis. <Speech_Male> It's kind of like the <Speech_Male> nucleus right. The starting <Speech_Male> point for <Speech_Male> all other <Speech_Male> forms of of design <Speech_Male> and art. <Speech_Male> I feel <Speech_Male> at many times <Speech_Male> people lot. <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> What's in <Silence> it it. <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> there's so many things for <Speech_Female> interiors as well as <Speech_Female> other design that follows <Speech_Male> fashion. <SpeakerChange> Yeah <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> absolutely <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> you know if you if you think <Speech_Male> about a deeply <Speech_Male> you realize <Speech_Male> that fashion is <Speech_Male> nothing more than design <Speech_Male> for the <Speech_Male> person right. <Speech_Male> So so <Speech_Male> why. Wouldn't it <Speech_Male> stand to reason that <Speech_Male> you could take those same ideas <Speech_Male> the differences. <Speech_Male> Sometimes <Speech_Male> there's the the the <Speech_Male> evil side of it to <Speech_Male> where fast <Speech_Male> fast fashion <Speech_Male> gave way too fast design <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> that clearly <SpeakerChange> doesn't <Speech_Female> work. <Speech_Female> That frustrates <Speech_Female> me. I i don't <Speech_Female> want to spend too much <Speech_Female> time in that <Speech_Female> in that space. <Speech_Female> Of course <Speech_Female> but i. I <Speech_Female> go back and forth <Speech_Female> with that so frequently <Speech_Female> in talking <Silence> about that <Speech_Female> and <Speech_Female> <SpeakerChange> watching <Speech_Female> how quickly <Speech_Female> these <Silence> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> these design <Speech_Female> concepts <Speech_Female> coming go so <Speech_Female> quickly and how much <Speech_Female> that is happening <Speech_Female> out. <Speech_Female> I see it probably <Speech_Female> more so like <Speech_Female> on instagram. <Speech_Female> Because it so image. <Speech_Female> Heavy of <Speech_Female> like wow. That was <Speech_Female> popular last <Speech_Female> year. And now it's already gone. <Speech_Female> We <Speech_Female> used i mean <Speech_Female> we used to sit <Speech_Female> with our interiors <Speech_Female> for years <Speech_Female> and years and years before <Speech_Female> we thought about switching <Speech_Female> something <Speech_Female> and now <Speech_Female> i am worried <Speech_Female> that our <Speech_Female> to see something <Speech_Female> new so quickly <Speech_Female> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> will <Speech_Female> hurt us somewhere <Speech_Female> along the line in <Speech_Female> the long run more <Speech_Female> so with <Speech_Female> of course <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> You know just <Speech_Female> all of these things ending <Speech_Female> up in landfills at <Speech_Female> some point. I don't know. <Speech_Female> I i <Speech_Female> struggle with that <Speech_Male> as <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> a human. <Speech_Male> No i get <Speech_Male> that. And and i <Speech_Male> see that struggle <Speech_Male> i feel too. I think <Speech_Male> what's interesting as well <Speech_Male> as you know. You combine <Speech_Male> that <SpeakerChange> with the fact <Speech_Male> that you know <Silence> art <Speech_Male> is <Speech_Male> is one of the <Speech_Male> one of the number <Speech_Male> one source of traveling <Speech_Male> art right <Speech_Male> right or the two sources <Speech_Male> of inspiration <Speech_Male> for people the <Speech_Male> two main sources of <Speech_Male> inspiration i <Speech_Male> guess you could include nature <Speech_Male> there too but with <Speech_Male> art being as expensive <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> as it can be <Speech_Male> and this <Speech_Male> seems like <Speech_Male> something <Speech_Male> that almost <Speech_Male> falls or can <Speech_Male> fall within <SpeakerChange> that same <Silence> category <Silence> agreed. <Silence> <Speech_Male> I <Speech_Male> love that. <Speech_Male> I really do <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> This <Speech_Male> was <Speech_Male> a lot of fun. <Speech_Male> i really do. I'm <Speech_Male> looking forward to and i wanna <Speech_Male> hold you to it <Speech_Male> Maybe coming <Speech_Male> back a win <Speech_Male> you can. You can announce <Speech_Male> some <SpeakerChange> of the people <Speech_Male> that you're working. <Speech_Male> That would be fun. <Speech_Music_Male> Okay cool <Speech_Music_Male> early <Speech_Male> early fall <Speech_Male> okay. <Speech_Male> He listened <Speech_Male> by by early <Speech_Male> fall <Speech_Male> We should all <Speech_Male> be outside <SpeakerChange> again. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Getting <Silence> mostly normal <Speech_Male> someone <Speech_Male> normal. <Speech_Male> That's what i'm <Speech_Male> hoping. Mine <Speech_Male> kind of normal. <Silence> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> By the way <SpeakerChange> what is <Speech_Male> normal me <Speech_Female> <Silence> <Speech_Female> <Silence> that is. <Speech_Male> That's open <Speech_Male> for interpretation exactly. <Speech_Male> <Advertisement>

We are as a company <Speech_Female> <SpeakerChange> <Silence> without losing. That <Speech_Male> is <Speech_Male> all of your outreach. <Speech_Male> Or sorry is <Speech_Male> all of your curation done <Speech_Male> on an outreach. <Speech_Male> Basis what if there's <Speech_Male> if there's a designer slash <Speech_Male> artists who says <Speech_Male> you know what my work <Speech_Male> would make for <Speech_Male> a great <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> for great wallpaper. <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> I get those inquiries <Speech_Female> all the time. Do <Speech_Female> you <Silence> <Advertisement> do <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> and how how <Silence> welcome. <Speech_Female> It's <Speech_Female> it's always welcome. <Speech_Female> there's <Speech_Female> always going to be artwork. <Speech_Female> That just <Speech_Female> does not <Speech_Female> come in front of <Speech_Female> my face without <Speech_Female> it. Being put <Speech_Female> their <Speech_Female> I i <Speech_Female> have a limited <Speech_Female> ability <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> see everything and <Speech_Female> so i always <Speech_Female> welcome people <Speech_Female> to to send <Speech_Female> their artwork <Speech_Female> to mir their portfolios <Speech_Female> to me. <Speech_Female> We also work <Speech_Female> with designers <Speech_Female> as well who <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> may have <Speech_Female> a particular idea <Speech_Female> for <Speech_Female> wall covering <Speech_Female> that they would like <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> create <Speech_Female> and that's <Speech_Female> always fun <Speech_Female> road to go down <Silence> as well. <Speech_Male> <Silence> <SpeakerChange> I bet it is. <Silence> <Speech_Female> I <Speech_Female> think what right <Speech_Female> now but we're working <Speech_Female> with with <Speech_Female> a designer <Speech_Female> To to <Speech_Female> hopefully launch <Speech_Female> this fall <Speech_Female> a an <Speech_Female> awesome collection <Speech_Female> of his walker. <Speech_Female> But <Speech_Female> i can't talk about <Speech_Male> at the moment <Speech_Female> but will it may <Speech_Male> be <SpeakerChange> starting <Speech_Male> to happen that way. <Speech_Male> I love that. Maybe you can <Speech_Male> come back and <Speech_Male> you know it's interesting <Speech_Male> to diana feel <Speech_Male> like <Speech_Male> you. You <Speech_Male> have a really <Speech_Male> good understanding <Speech_Male> a <Speech_Male> really good. Feel <Speech_Male> for this <Speech_Male> for <Speech_Male> a number of reasons but not <Speech_Male> the least of which is <Speech_Male> because <Speech_Male> you came from fashion. <Speech_Male> So you get <Speech_Male> that. You're a photographer. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> So you get <Speech_Male> how with the <Speech_Male> icees <Speech_Male> but you also <Speech_Male> you also try to slow <Speech_Male> yourself down through <Speech_Male> through sketching <Speech_Male> your experiences <Speech_Male> so you kinda have <Speech_Male> like this full <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> understanding <Speech_Male> of how <Speech_Male> to translate <Speech_Male> a feel <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> onto <Speech_Male> a graphic onto <Silence> a <Silence> wall. <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> Think i've <Speech_Female> never believed put all <Silence> <Advertisement> that together. But <Silence> <Advertisement> <Speech_Female> yeah <Speech_Music_Female> <Speech_Female> i do. <Speech_Female> What's <Speech_Female> funny is i <Speech_Female> remember. <Speech_Female> You know probably <Speech_Female> a year into <Speech_Female> my career at erie <Speech_Female> environments. <Speech_Female> I had this <Speech_Female> whole moment of <Speech_Female> realizing that. I've <Speech_Female> used <SpeakerChange> every <Silence> single <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> skill. Set that <Speech_Female> i. <Speech_Female> You know all of these <Speech_Female> other little lifetimes that <Speech_Female> i've lived. I have <Speech_Female> been able to bring to the table <Speech_Female> from <Speech_Female> photography <Speech_Female> in photographing <Speech_Female> our product to <Speech_Female> using <Speech_Female> shop to create <Speech_Female> installation images <Speech_Female> to create oliver <Speech_Female> branding <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> being an artist <Speech_Female> in being able to <Speech_Female> create <Speech_Female>

"Yeah we we can we have. We have a great talented team of designers. And you have an idea of like. This is what i'm envisioning. I'm envisioning painted on my c laying. You name it We we can generate a custom designed for you. We can also take if you have the copyright license for an image or particular piece of artwork. We can also create that in houses well to their specifications. A lot of custom coloring options are really big for interior designers as well working with particular color palette. Tell me about the materials. You work with We have we have multiple different substrates. We have it's between commercial and residential. We have a matt in a linen type Substrate that is eco-friendly. Probably more for your residential and then we do have the type. Two's as well on a canvas. In matt we also have specialty substrates as well that are metallics that add a whole other dimension to the wall covering itself and we also carry scrim which is a fabric based window. Film said actually warms up the space. But if you need privacy in need light to be filtered in that's a great product uses. Well tell me a little bit more about that. Because i can see so many different applications for something like that. I really think right now with everybody starting to think about how to get back into the office. I'm seeing a lot of like flexi type dividers or glass type. Dividers that this Film can be applied to. It's very easy installation. We still say. Definitely use a commercial installer. It is relatively easy to install its fabric versus you know a plastic film. It's a water base. It he says so. It's all very earth friendly in yet warms up that glass or cold flexi type partition and so we print on the surface of that so the the mural continue what even if you wanted to do a wall into window and continue with the wall. We can do that.

"Our distribution channels are mostly showrooms. We do have a few independent sales reps as well but that is that's who's selling our product and i think i think sharing the stories as i feel like we. Are you know culturally. We are a story based species. We we love to be able to share Stories back and forth and the stories of artists in how they generated their artwork or if there was something special in regards to creating that artwork once that is passed onto our sales reps and our showrooms they to get excited by it. And so i think that sharing of all those stories is what has helped make.

"I i have to establish trust with the artist. I you're taking. You're taking their baby from them. Basically and trying to raise them into a different thing and so you really have to start with trust in so it becomes a very personal conversation that i have with most of the artists I like to find out how they started. Why they started with cer- process. What are they going through when they're making art like that. Whole story is so paramount to our product and i status frequently to so many people that he feel like. We're much more of an artist representation company. That just happens to make wallpaper because so many of us in at area are outside of work. Were all super sensitive to the needs of artists to making sure they make a living to making sure we keep the integrity of their artwork. There's just so much of that. That is important that i share with that artists at the very beginning. And so it's really developing a relationship with the artist i to the point of i have pretty personal relationships with a lot of them. I that's silly when i say this. I set rocks to one of our artists. Because i found them on a hike and i know she's out hiker to and when i saw a gosh these little leslie friends paintings. This is crazy. I send these tour So we i do. I have very personal relationships with a lot of artists You have to build that trust and backing away from the artists themselves for second in focusing on the product itself. It's so funny because wallpaper is back wallpaper is having a moment And i don't think it's going to be it's not gonna. It's not just a moment but it's taken a while for for the idea of wallpaper to come back. Why do you think that is. I think we have all of these crazy horror story. It will those of us who are old enough to remember them..

"Homeowners. Tell me tell me about area You've been with the company for a while. I've been with the company a little over eight years It started about nine years ago. gosh probably almost going on ten years Between the owner his name's jimmy rice and the creative director at the time. Her name was catherine curb. The partnered together She had a background in installation art. In jamie had a background in theatre set design and created a company. That did a lot of photofinishing that eventually turned into wallpaper. And so those two meeting kinda had this moment of while. What would it look like if we took artists art work created that whole type of environment almost eh theatrical set design So that was jamie's background. It was not. It was not a far stretch to go from a the theater. Set design into changing an entire space with just one wall oftentimes. that's but you're working with in theaters. Just one wall and changing the whole perception of your space. And so i came on eight years ago. Believe it or not as a design intern. I did all of the branding The installation images and a lot of the setup work to get it to a space of sellable product. And i love something that you said you know. Let's let's talk about theatrics for a minute. It jamie was a prop master and so he for for live stage I i've done a lot of work with the set decorator..

"Quick question that's not so quick. How are you and how are you holding up to great question Especially given given the time. I am doing surprisingly well I like probably most people go back and forth. There's been some really rough things that have happened in the last year. That have been Difficult to navigate. And there's been some real great silver linings as well so as me personally. I've had some some struggles Areas of business has done really well. There's been so many people you know. Stuck at home redesigning their houses and area has been able to. You know to really whether the storm i have a great small nimble team of great individuals. And we've been able to figure out how to do the work from home. I have a small production crew in the building. And it's you know it's it's been kind of a blessing in that regard of being able to shift so quickly well and business aside. I mean it's interesting your your career and we will get to area in the second but with regard to you you know. You're you're a creator. You're an artist yourself. You're a photographer. You came from fashion I have found that in talking to people especially uber creative types over the last year the the the biggest challenge has been mental from missing out on all of the things that truly inspired us. You know and it's finding ways to find inspiration in a situation where you don't have access to so many of the things that you have become completely accustomed to true and as a creative i i chose to really shift gears so in my off time i i have a very large creative space with all my crafting supplies in art supplies. All of those things. And you know towards as i'd say october i just got to this point where i couldn't be outside near as much as i was because i really like being outdoors and camping and hiking and that has been very doable during that whole last summer but soon as everything really started Gauging towards the election in all the media and all that stuff i found myself I found myself hiding in my art space and creating and remembering the joy of what creating does and that outlet four all things uncertain all things uncomfortable even losing a close friend..

"You look design and style the verticals the upstanding barriers. Yeah we're talking about wallpaper. Ooh so much has changed when it comes to design in general over the past ten years specifically but dramatic changes in wall coverings have been a major focus for many creatives who were actively seeking new designed frontiers to conquer. I would say the last major developments in wallpaper. Given what the nineteen seventies with new and experimental colors metallics and flocks. Interesting to note that wallpaper dates back to the sixteenth century much of which was used to design the interiors of cabinetry by the twentieth century. It was ubiquitous designs. Were simple at first. Floral motifs to to make the repeat an easier process block printed with different colors stamped over the last to create desired effect over time the process in europe got to be incredibly intricate and quality control got better flocks became popular using powdered wool. That was the byproduct of the wool industry. Think about that idea for a moment. What a remarkable use for a wasted product until the aforementioned nineteen seventies. Pretty much abused. The concept in unimaginable ways flocking. I'm referring to combined with metallics and a color palette spilled over from the psychedelic nineteen sixties backtracking for a moment around the seventeenth century. Shinwari style papers were coming out of asia and could be found in the stylish boutiques of paris and london. These were painted not printed with non repeating compositions with vivid color that lent the feel of true luxury. Many designers have shared with me a trepidation for wallpaper on the part of their clients. The rationales all make sense a still fresh propulsion from the nineteen nine hundred ninety s a fear that it becomes instantly dated or clashes with the furnishings fixtures. Art that final point is one. I want to focus on the art and that is really a good point because the proliferation of art at all price levels It's exploded over the past eight to ten years in the us. And this leads me into my conversation with dianne perry president of airing environments i about the company founded in two thousand twelve area. Environments is a studio that curates originals from contemporary artists and with that produces large format wallpapers and murals. This feels like the natural progression for the medium thinking about this differently in a perfect world one could build the space style and scale around the art. But that's not realistic. So what about finding the art that you love and stretching molding and conforming it to the space you have you see. That makes sense dianne. Perry has been with area environments since twenty eighteen and has an extensive art background. She's a photographer. Graphic designer who originally studied fashion design. And we'll use that as the primer for my chat with diane are you subscribing to the podcast..
