"Noel Gallagher had a band. And they were just like, whatever. He was the singer. I mean, he's got to find voice. He's really good songwriter. They weren't doing anything. So he's like, hey, Liam. How about you come sing for my band? And Lee was like, you been so stick around and sing for him. And he moved from Kent to Essex. And started singing for oasis, and the rest is a wonderwall. In 1903, the team built their first complete motorcycle, featuring a single cylinder engine, a buckle crank, and a leather drive belt, the bike was kickstarted by the writer pedaling until the engine built up enough compression to take over. Like a moped. Yeah. Shortly thereafter, the eldest Davidson brother William joined the team, and in 1904, they created a second prototype, which premiered in a race at state fair park in Milwaukee. So it's three Davidson brothers. And one Harley, and he gets all the credit. Dude, that guy rules. I mean, Harley is a great name. Harley's a really good name, but I've been that guy's personality rules. To be able to three brothers and be like, no, I think I'm so proud of first. The company's first production bike, the Harley-Davidson model one, was formally introduced in 1905, and America's newest motorcycle manufacturer was officially off and running. In 19 O 6, Harley-Davidson had 6 employees and built a new 28 by 80 foot factory right there on chestnut street. Today, known as Juno avenue. Oh, I know, you know. Yeah, it's after that movie with Michael Cera. Juno, Rainn Wilson. It's quirky. Diablo Cody. Diablo Cody. This is where Bill Harley designed his first internal combustion engine. Harley-Davidson produced 50 bikes that year and released their first product catalog where they were nicknamed silent gray fellows. What? In reference to their love of dove gray paint. And quiet, reliability. Okay, it's that east coast gray were always looking for. That's an inside joke that. Neither of you worked here for. The first four months of donut. The company was officially incorporated in 1907, and it was time to give the founding fathers official titles. As for the three Davidson brothers, Walter was named president, Arthur, general sales manager, and secretary, and William became head of production. Meanwhile, Bill Harley, who completed his mechanical engineering degree from university of Wisconsin Madison that same year was the chief engineer and treasurer. Go badgers. Go badgers. That is so sick. I love that. Go badgers. Despite their growing success, William Harley wanted to take their bikes to the promised land, which for him meant building a two cylinder engine, which he did in 1909. With a displacement of 49.5 cubic inches and 7 hungry buff horsepowers the soon to be legendary V twin could reach speeds as high as 60 mph. Dude, in 1909, 1909, and I guarantee there's no suspension on that thing. I mean, scary as hell. Dude, that'd be awesome. I used to have a moped with a solid rear end. It was like a BMX bike. And it would go 60. Oh, God. It was awesome. You had to pedal it. That's sick. Shout out to Brighton bees in North Carolina. If you're still a company, they build really cool mopeds. Harley-Davidson's production rose to 3200 machines by 1910 and the bar and shield logo was used for the first time, which was sketched by the Davidson boys aunt, Janet. Shout out Janet. Great job. That's iconic. Aunt Janet, we need a logo. In 1911, Harley introduced the 7 D, their first model with a V twin engine. Three years later, the ten F featured the first V twin with two speeds and a step starter similar to the modern day KickStarter. The ten F was also the first model to use a chain rather than a leather drive belt, which would corrode much faster than metal. I mean, you know, bury a horse and bury a piece of metal. Come back 6 months later, tell me which one looks more different. One's gonna taste better. That's for sure. Yeah. We love horse kimchi. Based on Harley-Davidson's increasingly strong reputation, the U.S. Postal Service was using 4800 Harley bikes to deliver mail by 1914. Arthur Davidson also successfully expanded Harley-Davidson contracts with various police departments and the U.S. Military, which was fine timing. Considering a guy named Franz Ferdinand was about to be assassinated in Austria, leading to World War I. Said no one. No, I was letting you have this one. Take me out. Roughly 50% of Harley sales went to the U.S. Military for use in World War I. Hey guys, guess what? Probably charge triple. We got the military? And also guess what? The entire world is going to war. Oh no. Wait, what countries? All of them. Literally. All of them. Like we mentioned in the hells angels episodes. The motorcycles were mainly used for scouting on the battlefield, so you'd have some guy right up there and be like, okay, this is where the guys are and ride back. That would be a sick movie to make a movie about a World War I. That's cool. What do we call it? Scout it out. No, it'd have to be called, it had to be a certain time where a scout really helped the thing and the name of the movie is like latitude and longitude coordinate to be like, wow. Like 80 by one 60 west. I was going to say trench hoppers. Yeah, that's sick. Andrew Garfield stars. Oh, he is so in. Jon Hamm is in it. And Timothée Chalamet. He's in all of our movies. The company also opened their first service school, which operated as an army training facility for mechanics throughout the war. Did these guys are a good startup? Yeah. After the armistice was signed in November of 1918, Corporal Roy holtz was the first American soldier to cross into Germany, and he was riding, a Harley-Davidson, when he did it. Harley-Davidson became the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer in 1920, with over 2000 dealers in 67 countries. Wow. They started ten years earlier. Donut is 7 years old. We don't have any factories. A single factory. We don't even have a government contract. We don't even know. Additionally, a new facility was built on Juno avenue in Milwaukee, which still functions as the corporate office center today. I bet there's some nice bars down the street from that place. Oh, yeah, man. We're talking about Juno? Yeah. Yes, the why not three? Is it great? There's also the best chicken wing place in Milwaukee, east point. Dude, I gotta go back. We gotta go. I wasn't invited the first time. It's because I'm not fun. Harley also found marketing success by sponsoring several motorcycle racing teams around the country. Nicknamed the wrecking crew, the wildly popular teams competed against the likes of other early manufacturers like triumph and Indian motorcycles. In the early 20s, one faction of the wrecking crew started having a pig ride on the back of their bikes during the victory laps. That's sick. Fans began to refer to the crew as the oh my gosh. And thus, Harley's became known as hall.

Her music was part of the mainstream in the mid 1990s, and today it's part of a hit musical northwest news radio's Brian Calvert has a closer look. When I say the name Alanis Morissette, there is no mistaking the sound nor the emotion of her music. I had the chance to sit down with actors Dylan klena and Alison shepherd. Is about Connecticut family that it seems normal to the common eye, but as you peel back the banana behind closed doors, you start to realize all their flaws. Inherently, we're using Alanis music, which elicit so much like raw and unfiltered emotional catharsis. And so I would say that that is very much what our show is. I think it's a celebration of individuality and of standing up for what you believe in and for what's right. But don't for a second think that this is Alanis story. She didn't want it to be autobiographical at all. So what like brilliantly? Diablo Cody did was take all of these songs that already existed and created a completely fresh, completely new story. Where have we heard that before? A musical based on songs we know that tell a completely different story. Mom and Mia? Yes, come on on me as the best. Right? I mean, it's apples and oranges, but in some, but it's still fruit, you know? I always think, every time I do a show, I'm like, we're in the same world as the air when he can't send, just like, what's happening in Connecticut. Dylan says knowing the music is a good thing. And so if you go in with listening to Alanis Morissette's jagged little pill, you'll be like, oh, I remember that song. I shall come out with a different appreciation for songs that have been around almost 30 years. Jagged little pill plays through November 13th of the paramount and Allison's goal on stage here in Seattle to make sure you understand the message of this musical. You are not alone, you are loved for every part of you, and it is not just okay, but important and imperative that you live the most authentic life that you can every single day. "Tell us about this decision that you've made to write it in this way but the other thing that one everything was move on rose which is definitely a show that is on broadway. Currently i saw moulin rouge with our mutual fried matt whitaker. This is one of those things about being like a fan of broadway and like actors knowing everything that they put on the fucking stage eight performances a week right like you cannot deny that everyone is putting their heart into all of their work in like a show that sure but i don't think it's a i mean honestly time it's described to me the amount of songs that are like sandblasted into this show. Here's firework by the way i can buy now. That's what i call music for on my own time. I don't need to like go pay. But like i do have to say the suspense of whether or not erin today. What actually walk away with the aboard. When they could have feasibly nominated him he was the only nominee and then not giving him the award based on the sixty percent of votes. You need to actually claim the award which those stressful and yet then when he won. I was like wait. This is so boring so anyway it was like he was in a vice. That's about these. Awards is to sort of like i do think that the todi voted bodies should be shake it up because of like move on for be felt so vegas is specifically engineered for towards broadway and like yes you need a show like that to keep broadway charting the coins but all you had so many speeches with people all night. Big like imploring broadway to like do something that represents anybody else Just to see like every fucking award like in the musical category like to go to moulin rouge is a sort of like you're not even trying Are you you're not. it's though so lazy. Yeah i think. I mean just what you mentioned earlier idea that the nominating bodies so much more diverse than the people who actually get to vote on. What is such a fascinating duality. I have questions about that. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me but moulin rouge is going to be a rom. I do plan on seeing. And i'm going to have a good time and you will get thousands of pop songs that i think are still like do. Do they change out songs and bring them in like his intimate singing. Good for you yet. I'm sure they'll do a fresh update you know and then also I don't know i didn't see a christmas carol. So that kept cleaning up and of course our friend. Diablo cody one for the book for jagged. Little yeah you know what remains jarring to me about that musical because we got to see a performance from jacob on the main telecast is that for me the power of jagged little pill that every song is so like. It's not just an angry album. It really is this gamut of emotions. There's some like songs about gratefulness or romance or obviously ironic is its own category of song and yet they all belong to one woman like really feel like one person showing you as many sides of their personalities they can and then when you watch the show and again i've not seen the show so this is not me judging the show again my friend fucking wrote the show. I'm not here to do the show. It's weird because they give the songs to everybody and that's also like the point of like american idiot and stuff too but it's it's interesting. What's left of the album's appeal when you're not just hearing them all from one voice. Do i still like it as much. I can't really tell you know Yes it's not that. Carole king musical okay right carols like i wrote. 'this will be thinking up a whole different experience though which is like like what i like about that concept is that i feel like. They just leaned into the idea that this is going to be completely different from the album. It's going to be completely different from a listener and it speaks that whole idea. That all of this is relatable rate. Which i think for br and broadway camp abounds like just leaning all the way in abounds and so it's like oh it's a very different experience. We might get more. We might get last. There's something for everyone in that anything. There's something really nathan exciting about that. So i was kind of happy to just hear. That was still around in doing well. I had heard about it a few years ago. I a new. It's exciting to me. It's an exciting show. I love the concept of like a classic. Ninety s album is like now repurpose as a classic broadway cast recording that leg. A different generation of like gays zubaydah been listening to like the in the nineties. Maybe they're listening to this We're theater kids And that's exciting for me like you mentioned american idiot. You know. there's so many things like that you know it's like they are now also like a broadway october. You can hear it is this right. Yeah something that. I think was fascinating though in the main. Cbs telecaster we watched basically every living broadway legend. Give a performance of one kind or another. The beginning of it was dominated by shows and performances. That our old pop songs repurpose for broadway audiences. So like you had david byrne doing burning down the house. The famous talking heads song Moulin rouge lady marmalade performed. And i have to say it to me was not a glistening advertisement for what broadway is now just because it does feel like. You're listening to your old ipod a lot of the time. Yeah i get it and like david bird is like jesus fucking love him. Yeah yeah but it really does. That's part of my problem with milan. Route you know. I feel like the theater. We grew up. A you know you're hearing original compositions and songs and lyrics from like creators..

"This was another player. you saw. Yes yes it was. Actually one of the last shows that i saw before the shutdown happened. And i'm just so happy to see. David alan grier get this award. He's been nominated several times before that and this was his first time winning. And i think a lot of people don't realize this dude is like a trained actor. He can do everything from shakespeare to a soldier's play to of course a lot of people know him from in living color so like his range is fantastic and it just made me really happy to see him get this award and i thought the production was actually really really strong. And i'm glad. I got a little bit of love last night In terms of a little bit of love actually a lot of love moolah rouge basically soaked up just about everything. It was nominated for including best musical leading actor in a musical into debate who listeners of the show will remember as the carnival barker in schmidt. Geduhn he was. The only actor nominated in this category. Because of we are timing stuff and man. I really wanted him to acknowledge it a little bit more than he did but he mostly played it. Straight right yeah. This was the first time this that ever happens. And apparently he needed at least sixty percent of the votes to win and look at that he did. But i would have loved to see like a bit made out of his speech and instead i think he kind of like briefly alluded to or mentioned it and then just kind of went on. And it's like oh man. This could have been really funny moment. Something this weird happens. A bit is required. You gotta do a bit anyway. A featured actor in a musical went to mulan ridges danny burstein who gave an emotional speech mentioning the loss of his wife over the past year. You all showed up for us. You were there for us whether you just sent a note or sent your love. Sent your prayers sent bagels. It meant the world to us. And it's something. I'll never forget. And i love being an actor on broadway. Thank you so the few musical awards moulin rouge didn't soak up a went to jagged little pill featured actress in a musical went to lauren patent. Now there's a lot of controversy surrounding this particular. Musical producers have apologized for mishandling. The character of joe is played by patent. Joe is a gender non-conforming character who is quote on an open ended journey with regard to their cleaners and gender identity a patent of courses assist gender woman. And there's also been some other stuff around this particular musical actor nora. Shell voiced concerns about backstage treatment. They say there were coerced into putting off surgery producers. Say they're deeply troubled by these claims and pledged to take the matter quote very seriously a lot going on there but best book of a musical. Went to diablo cody. She's on her way to got. Yeah she has what this and then she has the oscar for the screenplay for juno correct. I like go. The i think she's made some really really fascinating stuff between obviously juno and then movies like a young adults entirely so good for her good for her leading actress in a musical winter. Adrienne warren for tina. The tina turner musical. It's very on the nose name for musical but there you are. You saw this too right. I did and look adrienne warren. I was so happy to see this happen. I feel like this was one of the wins. That was pretty predictable. She just gave a powerhouse performance. I mean the thing about tina. You know we've already seen what's love got to do with it angela. Mass and of course killed that role in the nineteen ninety-three movie adrienne. Warren took a show. That was kind of wrote. And you know it's not about okay. I don't know my oh stage show. And it's kind of Undone by some very traits moments but she really elevates the role she really inhabits tina turner while also making it her own. She has the rasp patina. But she's just so charismatic that it feels like more than just you know jamie foxx.

I appreciate it. What high compliments. Let's leave yours. Goes podcasting as your directing wills. So why wanted to start with was just because some of our listeners for those may be unfamiliar with your filmography at the moment. Let's take a trip back in time. You cut your teeth or at least some of your teeth at college humor And it was funny. Because was talking to you on the phone. For the first time i did not know that. And when you mentioned you at once worked college humor. Mind immediately. flashback to sketch the college humor. Put out back. When i was in college that you start in called greece dilemma. Can you explain to our listeners. What that was and allow say is that i highly encourage you guys to look up on youtube. I still think about to this day. I think i saw. I dunno ten twelve years ago. Yes if i can articulate this properly grace which is one of my favorite films singing summer. Lovin and what gets down to the boys describing. I think it was danny describing what he was gonna do to to sandy. Can you get me a friend or make out under the doc. Basically the more sexually charged innuendo all of his guy friends. Stop the song and call him out and basically hamadan is the line in that song that is kind of like turned heads for years. Now when you watch it in more of a modern context where it's like did she put up a fight. Yes that was the term it was you put up a as you put it with my going. Everybody is like wait. What what's about fuck kentucky. Yeah kentucky right. Yeah well well. What would you say that exactly. It was cool. It was such a what a wonderful experience. What film school for me. I essentially made you know. Thousands of if i wasn't in i was directing if i wasn't directing i was writing or co writing thousands of sketches mostly about boobs and beer and video games but that was one of the ones that actually you know. We tried to get as pointed as we could but specifically from an anti sexual assault. Yes yes yes. So you mentioned those sort of a film school sorts obviously in the years or the intervening decade. You kind of dove head. Enhance i into horror comedy. I wanna start by focusing on your movie which was just released this summer. Cold we're wolves within can walk our audience through just the elevator. Pitch of what. This movie is in case. they haven't seen it. Obviously i highly recommend you all rent or stream it today. Can you walk us through. What was the inspiration for coming up with. This movie. And i know is based on a video game but it has an underlying socio economic and political subtexts that. I'm not sure was in the video. Can you walk us through that. It certainly wasn't in the video game because a video game is basically mafia but a bunch of like old krones and weird dracula esque medieval character sitting around a bonfire manipulating and undermining one another which is a very Socio politically and economically relevant to today the idea is actually conceived. The story adapted by the video games actually conceived by writer mishna wolff brilliantly conceived at the story of small town residents who have basically their simmering resentments for one another come to a boil while snowed in at the local lodge while a creature is killing them off one by one wreaking havoc and bringing out the worst in them and being from a small town being from a desolate catskills town because it wasn't quite desolate book. Certainly when i was a kid certainly more far removed from more progressive areas. Hit quite close to home. I know pretty narrow minded folks who live up in the sticks. There was a liberal town. You know woodstock new york. That's more or less where i grew up in but some of the smaller surrounding towns have very different political interests and outlooks than certainly i did growing up and it was really kind of cathartic to go back there and bring in. I my liberal and queer creative troop to tell this story about. I don't wanna say red. America and blue america but essentially about these archetypes sort of going head-to-head essentially disagreeing about this fiscal opportunity in this oil pipeline being built through their town. And so you went to film on location in the area. You grew up with it. Takes place in the fictional town of bieber field vermont. I sort of selfishly presented the hudson valley. Because you know it's where my parents are. And i figured on the weekends. I could have moms lasagna. And crying in my home pillow if it wasn't going well but also because beaver field even though it's vermont in the film is very much like some of the small towns that i grew up in and fleischmann's newark where they actually shot. Jim jarmusch is the dead. Don't die that was largely worthy film. Took place where we were. We actually shot as well as some part in Venetia new york as well but knew kids who weren't unlike some of the more. I guess uncouth characters in the film and i think part of that is simply because you know not all of them had the sort of privilege experience to be able to walk around the west village every once in a while or see a gay person or see someone who you know. Where's their religious beliefs on their on their sleeve or sort of more open minded folks. It was kind of wonderful to blow that open without hopefully being to ham fisted and making it about the magi idiots of the world you know. I think especially between scare me and werewolves. I think that you know my personal politics. My passion about where we stand society has less to do with where people on the political spectrum and more about like can i present crass people getting their come up or rather getting what they deserve but oftentimes in the context of viscera spraying everywhere with the specter of a wolf or a wheel. Man yeah and i think it was guglielmo del toro who once said that essentially all horror is political. Even if it doesn't itself intends to be. I think unlikely paraphrasing him right now and as you pointed out and i do agree with you there. Like the george romero's world movies or explicitly political. Like if you see nine eleven in you don't see nineteen sixties america and the civil rights movement and vietnam and all the horror that came with it. You're obviously not watching.

"In the press at that time that that was like it was a real like setting new. It was a real billy irish situation where it's like you win a oscar for your first movie and then everyone in hollywood is like staring at you. Yes but didn't she. Also i think she was the peon. United states of tara was it's very it's like almost kind of really different laying on one of my all time favorite television shows. It's only three seasons. So i've watched it through multiple times. Tony cla is a fucking genius. If you have not watched united states of tara go to yourself a favor watcher. I believe it still who it's so so so good and yet it's different from diablo cody but also similar like has her vibe on it the characters and like their wardrobes their little things. I'm like colours. Honestly the set design is very her the costuming but that show absolutely got me through a break up if you have not watched that show. If you're going through a hard time it is the it's like such a good like it's not. It's it's a fun watch that has laughs but it's also really like cathartic and bree olson it. She's that's when i was like she's a great actress. I that's when i found her and then short term twelve came out and i was like holy shit but i am constantly like bemoaning. The loss of the amazing half hour drama. I feel like. I really miss half hour drama series. I love a half hour show so so much and united states terror kind of came up in that perfect era where showtime and. Hbo were just like pumping out half hour drama. And it's like that perfect bite-size very like emotional funny like it's funny. Yeah it's like a goto like tonal reference for me. When i'm like it's it's funny inherently but also it's like real. I think that's so that's what you need to have a show. I think it's from the era of like weeds is kind of what i think of it. I loved we'd. I loved weeds. I even watch all the seasons of weeds that were very bad and that's another runoff hop on because i love like a half hour drama. A perfect background show totally. Yeah for sure. What did i what did i just watch. Oh i just watched white lotus. did you watch. I did watch white lotus. I liked it a lot. I feel like they could have just skipped the murder mystery part totally and just have been about assholes on vacation like i don't need a plot on the shoulder really like i just need like funny dialogue in enjoyable scenes and i almost feel like the murder mystery like took away from it. I agree with you. I thought it was very honest of the creator to say a variety. He did an interview and said that he intentionally. He knew he wanted someone to die. Any knew that it would make people watch if it had that hook and watching people struggle to accept that that was the hook was like very difficult for me as like a sideline viewer. Like i feel like. I learned more about people. I know from watching their reactions to y loners. I'm a person that like truly needs so plot as long as the characters are interesting leg. My favorite show of all time is tra may which was on. Hbo that had absolutely no plot for five seasons. And i think it's most beautiful show whatever exist and like i don't need that hook and i think that i think people would have liked it better if they weren't like the whole time trying figure out like well what had paulo really do like. What's the secret here is she like. I just think that it took away from like a funny show about assholes that actually wasn't really trying to make a point at all in was just like good acting good writing. Who did you think was the biggest asshole on the show. Because i think i have kind of hot take. I think shane is obviously supposed to be the bigger asshole like. He's the most obvious asshole. So like i guess shane. But i think we're supposed to understand like everybody's an asshole in their own way like everybody who works or who is on vacation. There is an asshole own way. Yeah i definitely i think. Shane is like such an easy answer. When people say they hate shade. I'm like no. You need to look beyond the bell like you need to really get into it right. I suppose to hate him like duh. You hate the rich kid i think. Honestly the one that is the most harmful in terms of the ecosystem. And i hate to say it is fucking coolidge because yes yet because of how she totally fucked over. What was her name. Brenda belinda linda. Like she liked it real harm to her. Yeah it real harm to her and like just attach is like like in all of the ways that shane is like emotionally like suppressed in repressed to the point that he boils over all the time. She is the exact opposite like she never has to get mad because she lives naked like that. Yes also just. I thought the scenes with family were so like laugh out loud. Funny i when you're talking about the gay dad and also when pause when they're talking about ball cancer and she's like why'd you think you'd ball cancer like it's so fucking funny. Steve zahn is who by the way is also interim if ever joe he's so good in this and connie britton just should only ever play rich woman. I love connie britton. She's like one of my faves. I was really surprised at how much i actually like. Laughed out loud by myself like in my house knowing that that was probably like the writers draft because he wrote the whole show himself and there wasn't like a punch-up jokes room. You know like the fact that he wrote all of that himself and that the show had me laughing. So hard episode episode was like very impressive agreed and just molly shannon was so good and i'm really excited. Because after he finishes. I'm gonna go watch the first episode of season two of the other. Two with molly shannon. Have you been. Did you watch us season. One of that Though i love. Tv eilly treated myself to white us. You know you should watch the other two. It's so quick thirty minutes not even thirty minutes. Because there's on comedy central. So it's like ten twenty two minute episodes. It's so funny. It's so fucking funny okay. I like a little comedy. You know yeah i do. I like crumby tune in and laugh. Okay wait so sonia blah blah. She's at home with her best friend and she's drinking wine and showing her chelsea's facebook. I was hoping this would be more. Dushi yes yeah. I mean when she was like why wouldn't you wanna take her home to his family and when her friend was like he doesn't wanna do that. I'm like yeah. let's get into it. Yeah right right right. So like they're they think she's like twenty two and so he doesn't get it she's like he can't bring an ice cream scooper to a work party and her friends. Basically just like jephson's sane and has issues. What do you want me to say like if this is on. Hbo it'd be like she just wants to.

"Like she looked so obvious. And this knife. I was known evers hiding themselves in a wide berm hat like a wide berm out is not a disguised because automatically. You're like who's the bitch wearing the hat only. I'm pretty little liars. Pretty young then hat is used as a taunting move is not just to taunt you. Better be a matching trenchcoat. Yeah she sees okay. So chelsea gets off the bus which is just a brutal image and sonia you She while i guess it was two thousand sixteen as i've been paying for her uber's yet but he could easily send her like towncar on the company like a company that he works for him shore since town cars for free all the time. No she really know you know. You don't know what you don't know. And she didn't ask for car exactly. But sonia caesar soon as she walks in and she gets close enough to the checkout alley check into confirm that she's there for jeff and she'll also over. Here's her name the way that she likes slips in slice she like like a just so funny. It's so non discreet like every moment of this. But she like does she turns her head in like puts her hand up kind of hyder face but she gets like six inches away like they also didn't do a very good job of filling. The scene with extras like go very far in the background. If i was like the hotel manager i would look at her and be like. Can i help you wicked man. She's like hovering the way that like rude. People do at the bank literally. She's athlete counter. Like you think the person be like. hey man. could you wait a moment right. Sonia leaves. This is only bad. Josie beside Acting moment in this movie she liked cries when she gets to her car. And it's it's truly a bad lifetime cry. She's trying to make something happen. That's not going to happen. Yeah i think it would have been better if she went with indignant. Yeah right like like. Yeah so so. There's like a weird. There's not enough anger about like what's she's like. Well why would you wanna be with her. Like there's not like why is he fucking twenty two year old. Like there's there's no anger bear. Which i think should be there yet. Yeah you're right. You're right because she needs something a dial back from yes later on. Yeah it does seem like she's taking a little bit so chelsea gets up to the hotel and this place is so obviously if a fucking marriott like this place is that it has the same wallpaper that you see in every every like hotel. You stayed in where you're like. I'm going to stay at a medium nice hotel tonight. It's that same background and you can tell that for her. This is like the ritz only. Yeah which makes it even more insulting frequent travelers like taking her there because clearly had to scratches points together. Night there So sony pulls up together before she goes into work and it's not even her day to work but you just came in to do. Some paperwork were snoop on chelsea online. The receptionist asser about our anniversary party. And she's like. It was good things and i was like. Why didn't you invite her. Sonia like little rude sonya. I feel like an anniversary. Party is the kind of thing that if you know your co workers having one you don't mention it to them if you're not invited. I saw wilson as somebody that has worked in an administrative role for very many years in quite a few different things. I will say like as close as i have been with my bosses. There's like usually understanding that. I'm like not invited to their anniversary parties. No you're right. I also thinking of like my vet where it's like six people. Yeah like my boss. And i would who i get along with like very well like we seriously get on gray but like we would probably have hours long conversations about the party that she's planning and i would not expect to be invited in i because she looks down on me but because we just don't we don't see each other outside of work like we just don't but like at work we talk for hours every day like we get on great but like i think sonya's like the boss boss which is like how with loss but at the last law firm. I was the person who is just one step above me. We hung out and went out for dinner and if she had anniversary party. Didn't tell me. I would be like highly offended so i think that this is very much like the receptionist in the boss get along well but clear work dynamics. No you're right. I think that. I've been inside for so long that i do forget things like that now. Three eight of molly. You don't have to work. You don't work the office nine to five. No likely all it takes no. It's i see. Here's the thing. I think that before the pandemic i would have known that. Why would the receptionist at her vet clinic. Be invited to her intimate. I guess anniversary party. I wouldn't have thought that she should be invited. But my lines are very blurred. Now where i'm like. They seem really close. Why not like i. I'm very loosey-goosey now. I'm very like you know what do whatever you want in life. It's fine sonya's looking at chelsea on her computer and she finds her facebook and when she scrolling through the photos she mutters chef. And i liked that beginning again or sticking with were mad at. I love that. She's holding him responsible. Yeah i would've we. She doesn't find out she's seventeen there but like it's a good entrance into sony being like jeff is making some weird choices. Here's a i always think about like all of the different people that watch these movies and how they tried to lake sort of represent especially like every type of woman or every type of role you could be in a movie like this always have like someone who very like their sole purpose in this movie is to give this toner vibe. In a way that you don't see another movies. And i thought this is the kind of movie that like a parent would put on with their like twelve year old in the room with the hopes that they would learn a lesson about not getting pregnant at seventeen but in reality. They'd be trolling themselves into like. Actually what i think is actually a more effective learning lesson for adult women which is like. Don't be mad at a young girl like this. Like figure out a way to take her under her. You're weighing in two thousand sixteen. I actually feel like this was kind of like a little bit of an advance dialogue for lifetime. If i'm being real with you. Yeah it definitely is like you know what i kept thinking. It's very juno right right. That's a great record. At the end i was like. Oh it's juno that is a great reference. Oh my god yeah. you're so right. Yes oh my god. I forgot what happened to the guy at the juno. But i know didn't go well for him i think he just get. They just like make him leave. I think she'd jennifer garner just makes him leave and then remember. She writes the note. That's like i'm still an if you are right Couple of watch out in years. I know i need to rewatch. I love jennifer garner into. And you know what i i know you do too like. I like diablo cody. I love diablo. Cody yeah she's the best so in her films only get better with time. Like i love. The jennifer's body is having its moment yet that's well-deserved yeah for sure. Because it was so that was like i mean i've never liked spoken her about it or anything but like i know from.

"Yeah i think this could be a really good one. I said eighty-one drop dead. Gorgeous is rotten at forty six percents. I'm secretly bitch wasn't fresh in her. Follow up that's right. Sorry go ahead in her. Follow up to the critically. Acclaimed juno redder. Diablo cody tells the story of what happens. Minnesota high school after a demon takes possession of a sexy cheerleader played by megan fox. The horror comedy co-stars amanda read. Jk simmons adam brody and amy sedaris from two thousand nine jennifer's body. Oh yeah well our world over Diablo cody right. The guys remember diablo cody. She should be forced to have sex. With 'em night shamlan to give birth to someone who's born irrelevant like born past their prime like born beyond their is a concept. It's tough but fair. Tough but fair. yeah. I don't know what the alba's up to all right. Everyone loves making fox and amanda see freidan but do they love this. Mousse got a pretty good cast brian. Did you see this one. I didn't and that's a bad sign. And cody was super hot. I mean sexual. But i mean after juno she could do no wrong so it's about time for first off diablo cody's first name has to be deborah or something right like how test this fucking christian fundamentalists dad right like don't don't you. Aren't you pissed if your kid changes their name to diab the fucking devil and spanish all right. What is her real first name. Look it up. what is it brooke sprouted. Got a nice dad.

"She's pretty quiet about this movie for awhile. And this was writer. Diablo cody's original intent. She thought it would be better as a ten part mini series type thing. Apparently this movie served as a visual inspiration for olivia. Rodrigue goes good for you. Music video which i haven't seen so i cannot serve me either either where everybody's clicked off us irrelevant now. We're absolutely relevant. But yeah let's go ahead and start with the plot jennifer's body as a two thousand nine horror movie directed by karen kasama written by diablo. Cody and starring megan fox as popular high school student jennifer who gets possessed by demon and goes on a killing spree of her male classmates and amanda ciphered anita or needy which is really on the knows her shy friend who tries to stop her of course and we have to pretend like she's not a hot girl who might just because he's had glasses she's not hot okay cool and the title comes from song of the same name by whole who was also featured in the soundtrack in graphic novel was released alongside the film by the way the soundtrack is pretty good. Especially if you have nostalgic moments early two thousand yeah in the soundtrack was very specifically chosen based on kind of this indie band. So so let's break down the fall a little bit more and talk about that. The story is told from anita's point of view who narrates the movie from solitary confinement where she is a violent mental patient and through flashbacks. We learned that. Even though nita anita i always want say she called needy and everything i read but anyway friends with jennifer. They have been friends growing up from a young age and devil's kettle minnesota which is great name. Anita calls them sandbox friends but they go onto nickname. each other. rogersville wanna start as high school. Anita is insecure something that jennifer selfish behavior only worsened. They're very co dependent on each other when they're in highschool jennifer convinces anita to come with their local spot to see a band named low shoulder. They are very like imo kind of trying for this lake. Panic at the disco type thing so as they're watching this show a fire breaks out in the bar and needed tries and fails to keep jennifer from going with the band. Actually i forgot about anita over. Here's the conversation with the van members trying to be like she averted. Yes she asks lutely lever alone Jarrett's yeah. I also love that chris pratt pops in as as he pops up. And you're like what and then also jason's and playing his hilarious and amy sedaris playing the mom. This is an obvious. Move if you have those specific characters. You should be aware i guess. Maybe that's maybe that's a hindsight thing because we know them better now but whatever so later that night jennifer shows up a needs home covered in blood trying to scarf down chicken was she can't hold the food down on. Pugh said this black liquid dark black lakewood apparently has needles in it or something uh jennifer flees into the night after she asks her. Are you scared with needed. Was again trying to stop her but failing to do so and scoring away because she's also scarupa. Jennifer dismisses needs concerns the next day at school and seems to be okay as in fact glowing over.

"All the kids get vaccinated. I guess me too. Yeah i would really like that. That would be nice. Yeah and you know. I hope they sneak get vaccinated if their parents won't let that just like you sneak and get the abortions girls get the vaccination. I forgot. Actually we were talking about the youth not getting vaccinated that the toxic parents could be responsible for this awful and this has been on my mind because in my hometown of lemont illinois. Our high school. Which i've talked about this on the show before i think with diablo cody who was also from my hometown. That we were called the lamont. Engines was our mascot. I j. u. n. s. And they've changed it eventually. To which she she mocked herself in the movie young adult they have the sweatshirts with that on it. There was a vote to they finally changed it to indians in two thousand five or so. Oh i know. I know we win. I know sigh of relief. But they phased out over the years and they had a vote officially to get rid of it and people blew up like the karen showed up and start yelling and shame on you and you represent means stuff. It's like man. Older people are just so defensive of the worst parts of their personality. Like if you change them you've killed them. Essentially if we know that from oh yeah. Life january sixth anything. We talked millennials. We couldn't celebrate october third anymore. My thing about mean girls is we have no touchstones of the two thousand so we cling to that to have something from that era. Because if we didn't have that what from two thousand and four would we still be thinking about. And the answer is only yeah by usher. That's takes about girls now a little bit. What do you mean you're like me girls. No no no. I enjoy it. it's just. We've clearly expired value. I think it's sort of like if after clueless came out it was all we talked about for ten years. That's fair that's all we have. I think american. India came out in two thousand and american nudie around the same time. Yeah again miss olivia rodrigue. "Yeah, Richard your connections just a little hard, I think probably because you're driving. But thanks for sharing your comment. Cheers does come up a lot for as being jarring for people on rewatch. Victor writes. What about Beverly Hills Ninja the way they had Chris Rock's character running around after a chicken and how far Lee's character refers to him as boy and David writes Dukes of Hazzard. It's so racist Now, when I was a kid, I thought nothing of it and Carrie writes. Obviously all in the family made my jaw dropped. When I saw an episode recently, even the theme song I used to love made me cringe. Many Looney Tunes are racist and sexist. I finally got my 11 year old son to watch my Fair lady in the ending his horrible messages about women's roles. But I do try to use these as opportunities to talk to him about these situations. Give them some context to discuss how would make him feel how he would react if he thinks parts of the story are good or bad. What characters could do? Differently or better. Okay, So what I want to know right now, Dave. Shelling is what Holds up for you. What's a show or a movie that holds up for you in a surprising way? This is a wonderful question, because we can talk about things that are good and positive. It's great. Um I really love the show news radio. It was on NBC. It got bounced around the schedule quite a bit, but I always thought it was a better written better acted. Show than Seinfeld, which was the big hit of that era. Um it's a multi ethnic caste. Um, it's a show that even though there is an office romance, it is kind of dealt with. In a very mature way. The women are not seen as prizes are their their own characters. Um, it's it's gotcha, Rogan. So there's that If you're a Joe Rogan fan, you'll be excited by that. If you're not, maybe that's the part that makes you cringe. But I always felt like that was The platonic ideal of the workplace sitcom is that the gender roles felt, um, considered and smart. Another thing that I think holds up really well is is all of the works of Albert Brooks. We talked about Woody Allen earlier on the show and how his movies are so clearly expressions of his pathologies and his the behavior that we now see as inappropriate is projected in these in these movies. Wonderful thing about Albert Brooks is that he was playing with a lot of the same kind of stereotypes of the neurotic yappy. Uh, but he did it in such a way that it was satirical that he was the villain of most of his films. If it's Lost in America or real life or modern romance or the muse. Uh, all of these movies defending your life, probably the least satirical one. But the one everybody loves the most. He is this character. In these movies that you kind of don't like because he personifies a lot of the worst traits of that part of history. And I think when you can find Material, especially comedy that is reflecting upon itself or upon the world that it lived in. You're going to get things that are going to hold up better. Been something like there's something about Mary, which has no concept of itself doesn't understand its role in society and isn't really lampooning anything other than People of different races or women or people with different abilities like that is what I look. For now, in things that hold up is as a sense of satire or a sense of, um You know, self reflection. Blazing Saddles to me is a perfect film as a black person in America. I think it's one of the greatest pieces of art about racism ever made. And Richard Pryor. If you don't know, Richard Pryor did quite a bit of work on that screenplay. And like, I just think it's a perfect piece of filmmaking, and I will always go back to that because it was addressing race. In the right way at that time. Again. Dave Schilling is co host of Galaxy Brains. And Constance Grady is a culture writer at box and you're listening to Forum. I'm Mina Kim. So cost is Grady. What has held up for you? One of the things that's been really exciting for me about this period where we are having all these conversations reevaluating, Uh, the very recent past has been getting to rediscover pieces of pop culture that kind of got ignored in their time. So my pick is Jennifer's body from 2009, which was kind of a flop when it first came out and kind of considered a bomb. Um, it was the screenplay was by Diablo Cody. It was her first film after Juno one. The Oscar, and there was like a big backlash against her at the time as being a sort of a trade hard hipster person, and it stars Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried. There was also a huge backlash against Megan Fox. At the time, which I think looking back, we can sort of See as being part of that particular style of really awesome misogyny where every woman who was Perhaps sexualized in some way was found to be doing it wrong and was somehow failing Feminism personally, Um, but Jennifer's body actually really, really holds up. There was this whole trend every examining it around its 10 year anniversary a couple years ago, and one of the things that people have pointed out about it is Viewers at the time were reading it as or reviewing the film, as though the expected audience was a straight guy they were saying, Okay, this is a sex horror film. It's about Megan Fox being sexy, and she's going to kiss Amanda Seifried, and on that level, it kind of fails as a movie, right? It's not very sexy. Also not very scary. But once you take beer default, you were as a woman or a girl. You can read it as a rape, revenge thriller, and on that level, it's fantastic. So the premise is that Megan Fox's character Jennifer gets abducted basically by the members of this indie band. One of them is played by Adam Brody. Who, of course, is Seth Cohen on the O. C. So one of the beloved nice guys of pop culture. And they take her off into the woods and something mysterious happens. But you don't find out for most of movie and then when she comes back, she's a monster who takes voice out aside and killed them. And it sort of becomes this whole metaphor for the problem of men sacrificing women's thought. He's on the altar of their own professional ambition and how women have to navigate this toxic atmosphere that has been created and Really the central relationship in it is between Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried. The guys are kind of disposable, so it becomes about their sort of fraught friendship and the ways they resent each other in the ways they love each other. It's a very good film about being a teenage girl. But because in 2009, we didn't think about teenage girls points of view when we evaluated films that kind of got ignored for a long time. It's been really cool to see that shift happening. Well, this is no rights show that holds up living single, the hilarious 90 sitcom with an all black cast that actually inspired friends, which hasn't held up so well in many ways, and then this listener, writes, I think it's a big problem with the American psyche in general, that wrong. Things aren't wrong until all your family, friends, neighbors and society at large. Agree they're wrong. I love King of the hill. But as a black woman, I know that Hank and Dale and that whole crew Would have been leading the charge of the capital on January 6th. Still, they make me laugh. I watched an old episode of Seinfeld, where Elaine complained to a white police officer that a black shop owner was wasting water by hosing down the ground in front of the shop That makes her a Karen in my eyes, But the show is still hilarious. It's art. And it's supposed to push the limits. Occasionally, one of the things I like about this listeners comment is that I do find that I can love a show again or even more. If I've gone through the process of grappling with its floss this had happened for you..

"Carry Kilmer from Chicago Fire. She is 33 as well. J. R. Martinez is 38 today It's a former U. S Army soldier who suffered severe burns on 40% of his body in Iraq. He then went on to be a motivational speaker and got a role on all my Children and one the 13th season of dancing with the stars. That's a hell of, uh, Love array that he's obviously been on. In addition to the service, Yeah, I used to watch him on tableau coat on the soap opera. I forget you said it was all my Children. Yeah. I don't know which one it was that they all kind of blur together back when I was watching, so really do Yeah. For a couple of years, I would watch soaps. I just leave it on. But so I did that I did that one summer. I think it was the summer before it was either before or after eighth grade. I was went to Oklahoma to visit my dad. My grandfather stayed in my dad's for a week stayed at my grandfather's for a week and for whatever reason I started watching General Hospital for that week, and I'll admit I got into it for a week. J. R. Martinez, Though he can dance. He deserved that mirror ball trophy, unlike uh, I like that Bobby Bones fella who doesn't really know to step if it hit him in the face. No, paso if it kicked him in the nuts and couldn't Chaka his way out of a I don't know. Shot shop store bag. I don't want to go ahead. That's that's to comment. That's Jar Jar bag. Come on, Well, the list combining it's not terrible. Alright, Academy Award winning writer slash stripper. Diablo. Cody is 43. She's the one that wrote the movie Juno. Since then, she also wrote. She also created the Showtime series United States of terror, which is actually really, really good. She also wrote Jennifer's body, Young Adult and Ricki and the Flash. From blind spots. Sullivan Stapleton is 44 Tennis star Former tennis star Steffi Graf is 52. Formerly of Baywatch. Yasmin belief turns 53 today, Boy George is 60 45th, president of the United States. Donald J. Trump is 75 Marla Gibbs. From the Jeffersons and one of my favorite shows from the eighties 2 to 7. She is 90 today. So did you like that one too. Oh, yeah, of course to seven. Mm. All right. So there are your birthdays for it today, So we obviously had a bunch of issues with ercot over the winter, and now we're already having issues with them for the summer. ERCOT, the governing body that oversees the electric grid in Texas, said on Monday that Forced generation outages and high temps in Texas could stress the electricity grid. They asked all Texans to reduce electric use as much as possible. June 14th through Friday, June 18th, I guess on Saturday, we just all go, you know nuts. But they did say in the news released a significant number of force generation outages, combined with potential record electric use for the month of June has resulted in tight grid conditions. Will be conducting a thorough analysis with generation owners to determine why so many units are out of service. This is unusual for this early in the summer season. I think they're saying that we had unseasonably warm temperatures the last couple of days, which I mean, it's June's of Texas. Yeah, I'm not. I'm not expecting 100 degree days, but I mean, I'm not going to be surprised if there are them. What's the exactly? The current heat index is it over 100? The last I checked, It was right at 100. Yeah, I mean, it's not. It's not crazy today, just because it's already hotter, like like the other. You know, the other day. It was like, you know, a high of 92. But it felt like 100. That's a big swing. Yeah, like Friday. Friday was the kind of turning point for me where I kind of realized. Oh, I don't want to be outside at all, like period for you to go back inside for the summer. Not even like walking out to like the car or something like that, huh? I think I think we should do is you should submit a, uh there's no like formal request to work from home. But just say just email. Just email. Don Davis our program but can be like, Hey, I'm gonna work from home. And let him respond back with got covid and be like No, It's too hot. Yeah, I gotta walk outside to get to my car to get to work. And it's just it's too much to ask if it's just one reason that's unreasonable. Where's the thermometer in your car? I've always wondered that because you know, it says how hot it is outside and every once more like today. I get in the car instead of 114, and then it slowly went back down. Yeah, you know, like, where does that live in the car? I would imagine. It's maybe right on the interior of the windshield. Uh, I've always just wondered. One time I got in it was, you know one of those 103 degree days, and it was 135 in my car or outside or whatever. That's a really good question. I want to know the answer to that. Now. Where is that? Is Google limiter? How accurate like you better Google it and give an answer before everyone starts calling in? Yeah, I know. I know where most manufacturers place the thermometer. On the front of the car behind the grill. This location exposes the instruments readings to re radiated heat from the road surface in a cool spot of the car. Uh, All right,.

"We got a little Madonna story today. You guys actually we have to Madonna stories. So last night, Andy Cohen in his clubhouse was the first time he had an audience. First time he was in the studio and the guests are in the studio is, uh yuzu Adobo Adobo and John Benjamin Hickey, and they both start in treatment on HBO. And John Benjamin Hickey. He's a character actor shows up in lots of movies and TV shows. But he's good longtime friends with Andy Cohen, a A. He was directing Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick in that Broadway show that they were going to be like. They're great, right, And he's just a real interesting guy. He played Laura Linney's brother and Showtime's The Big C, which is an amazing show. Anyway, they had, really. It was a fun, fun audience, and he appeared in the revival of Cabaret on Broadway 20 years ago, and he's asked this by someone who asked him if he ever got star struck, like, okay, the audience. Have you ever been star struck during a performance when you looked out at the crowd and saw celebrity? Have I ever been star struck by someone in the audience when you when you? Yeah, I did a long time ago. 20 some years ago, Um at the beginning of our friendship, I did a revival of the musical cabaret and I did it with the great Natasha Richardson and Alan Cumming. And one night in the audience. Madonna was there and we were all so excited that she was there and and there were kind of lights at the end of the story. Oh, and Madonna, Southern, Our leading lady know a lady who was not happening backstage with steam coming out of who is how dare she? Don't sit in braid your hair have some manners, Especially if all you know. All eyes are on you. So I guess that was a version of being starts. Where you but not in the right way. Um, were you But were you were you clocking? Or were you like? Oh, yes, I know. I was back then I still end that way a little bit. I get a little You know, I put tunnel vision like I don't really, especially if somebody famous is out there somebody I respect a lot of respect as an actor. Have you been on stage when movie killer he's quoting Patti LuPone. Um, have you been on stage? When has Meryl been in any of your body in the field, right? A few quite a few of the normal heart daughter. Normal heart. Okay, That's good record. I mean, Grant. We're probably going to call you Rock or a few times. But Donny no worries. No worries. Just too. That's why we played Ray of light at the beginning because that Broadway revival of Cabaret Opened in 98 the same year as Madonna's ray of light. And if you remember her whole look and Everything was spiritual nays, navel gazing yoga. So maybe braiding her hair was, you know, like part of the thing, But can you that was like I was like, I like that. That teeth is she's sitting there braiding her hair during no performance. Well, the whole thing is that everyone's watching Madonna because she's the big, huge star and think of the year. It is It's 20 years ago, and she's the big your extraordinary servants going to watch her braid your hair. How annoying with happy well, Steam was coming out of Natasha Richardson's ears. I believe in two John Benji believe it. Am And if you remember we talked about How? Um, she fired Diablo Cody from writing her biopic about herself. Wait a minute. The MC stories that Apparently then yesterday on Twitter, she shows, um, sitting with my favorite biatch. I mean, writer Erin Walton Wilson, and it's a picture of the two of them and so Erin is, he wrote like the screenplay for secretary. She wrote the screenplay for Got Girl on the train, and she's written some other ones, so sure they're working on what Madonna and Diablo came up with. And maybe there were creative differences. Me telling this story because, um I mean, it's her life she gets to decide. I think it's a terrible idea that she's direct even involved, right? Yeah, and because it was like, truth or dare was supposed to be a documentary about her and then the director of this, Alec Alex Cation convinced her No. We need to include the backup dancers because it gives a whole bigger picture of the whole and, of course, that's like one of the best concert. Documentaries ever. I have seen it. I never would put it in the get agree It's the best ever. What your it's that's like in the mid nineties. Right? So I mean, you know, having that included, like if Madonna is just going to do like all of her best of moments like we saw the trouble share had with her Broadway. Revival and hopefully her biopic is not going to be the same thing. But if we want to compelling, we need storytelling, Maybe without Madonna's hand in it, so Well, but it sounds like she's handing him with the writer, the new writer writer, But listen to this. So Madonna has a fan. That's his queen on it in the insta. And Aaron has the fan that says, be Aaj. Okay. So again, My dad is in charge. And Erin's going to dictate and right the way Madonna wants her to write. He must have needed a job. I mean, what a horrible Well, because you know we are there. Any words from Diablo quota at all about, you know? No. Clearly, Diablo got paid whatever she got paid Which Madonna is directing. We don't know which Madonna's Madonna with the cheek implants, the Madonna, who knows Well, let's get to the disturbing things about today at all the picture. We have turned the picture. Never know Madonna is Jack and a freeze on Instagram and Jack interface in real life. I mean, I can't help her. I can't figure it out. I mean, when you see her in real life, it's very different from her. And so with her filters, you know what I'm saying. Grant? Doesn't look the same little different. Definitely different, different, but she's writing with her child lover. Yeah, I like the story You need to know about to put this on your calendar Joy. Do you remember when Hollywood wise for people were too young in 1983 to be aware of its impact, But there is a book that came out Hollywood wives by Jackie Collins Course that was like basically a fictionalized story of all, and people were trying to guess who the Hollywood wives were like a fictionalized version of real life Hollywood CNN on June 27th, and it got its premiere last week at the Tribeca Film Festival. The movie is called Lady Bus. The Jackie Collins story. And it is getting, um, amazing.
