New Hampshire Voters Share Their Views On Medicare For All

"From the time you're born to the time you die most everybody in the U. S. uses healthcare so when democratic presidential candidates debate how much to change America's health care system the stakes can feel personal I'm a little fearful of a government run system I'm an entrepreneur and I'm under sixty five years old so I don't have any health care at all some insurances won't cover them some insurances will cover half and you know the co pays are just outstanding these New Hampshire Democrats are just two months from casting votes in the first primary in the nation I went there to hear how people's first hand experience getting sick and being treated shapes their view of this debate when Sheila Morse and fell into her third diabetic coma she was in Canada the first to come is alcohol played a big role and the third one alcohol didn't play a big role but I still hadn't recognized that I was a type one diabetic and I needed to take care of myself Canada gives everybody basic coverage under a government provided system people have the option of buying more coverage on the private market it goes to show you know the differences I mean the United States has superior health care if you have the right insurance and can get access to it Sheila Morse and understands the system as well because she's work for an insurance company and before that a hospital where she handled negotiations between doctors and insurers I spent a lot of my time asking these people like yeah yes and it's not medically necessary where did you get your medical degree after years of negotiating for others Sheila now has to advocate for her own medical interests and she's taking it seriously she's been sober for eight years she's getting good treatment for depression and she's committed to monitoring her diabetes but every time she spends hours trying to negotiate her own medical bills one thought keeps going through her head god help the people that don't have the background that I have she'll emerged from her last diabetic coma with some brain damage so she's now on disability and gets coverage through Medicare but the program won't cover all the tools that would help her stay healthy she has an insulin pump but she says the sensor to tell her when her blood sugar is low isn't covered so she has to check manually I check my sugar with my the commenter here she supposed to check her levels eight times a day between the care and the fights with insurance it's a full time job you know but I've learned acceptance there's nothing I can do about it I'm other than vote which I do and what when you cast that vote what do you see it as a vote for what are you hoping to do with your vote improve my life and the life of people like me for her that will not be a vote for candidate who wants to eliminate private insurance she skeptical of giving the government that much power people get insurance through their employer decent insurance through their employer if it's working for them and they're paying twenty Bucks a week then go for it here's the basic divide among democratic presidential candidates on healthcare someone to eliminate private insurance and put every American on a program like Medicare Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders fall into that group we're going to do this by saying everyone is covered by Medicare for all full

"It gets a lot of things. I'm sorry I just that that's something I definitely want to touch on is Some people feel like what I don't want medicine. I don't WanNa get on Medicine or things that but it's important to even if it's just for appeared time yet you I'm trying to say to get better just to figure out where things are wrong even before. I think I think what you're saying that when you say get on Medicine Casino I think think a lot of people have a fear right away right your blood pressure. Teenagers due to being overweight odium diet or something like that not going ahead and saying you know what let me take this and maybe you you get your weight now you ask and then you might not need it later on is what. I'm trying to say EH. Hominy thing if you have diabetes. It's possible it's not say a certain type of diamonds that you can make nine diabetes anymore if you make make some changes is what. I'm saying it doesn't have to be a permanent they. You're off on that. Yes you're very true win in your statement there and that's something that Unfortunately when people don't partake in what they call preventative care which is just going in and yearly and get your weakness older or pop in and checking your blood pressure however you know when patients don't do that they finally decide after four five years of not going to you know their provider order and guess what when they get their blood work done. Unfortunately I've gotTA diagnosed with high cholesterol diabetes and blood pressure pressure high blood pressure and that means I have to put him on medicine. Now I always tell my patients a lot of my patients that you know they come to me a lot of times because they realize that you know I really really encourage them to get off medicine. So they'll Khamenei. I have to put him on medicine to protect them. I always tell them. I'll put a half Half to protect you your blood sugars to the point where you can. Actually you know. Go into a diabetic coma. You can actually pass out because your blood sugar elevated so I have to protect you in the meantime by putting you on something but guess what you gotTa do the work. You will have to decide whether you WANNA stay on this medicine for the rest of your life or not so. That's a key point that you brought up. That's why I really educate people to buy taking preventative care so that if let's just say we draw your blind and you do have prediabetes guest night. You make those changes to prevent yourself from going into becoming a diabetic so that we don't have to put you on medications you know. That's a very good point you may and that's paramount. You don't have to stay on medication. It's up to you to make those lifestyle changes and what about the beyond. That seems like just. They may know they don't feel good. You know mine the fear of getting okay diagnosis or the fear of going to doctor. Some people are intimidated by doctors in the whole process. But just actual league knowing that that you something may be wrong or it may be just a little off. Just guess maybe the fear of actually knowing you don't feel I'm good and then going and talking to Tucson Wendy's see a lot of patients that are on Mike that they finally came in. They were scared to death that something was really wrong. Yes affair component is definitely there to a lot of people especially men are waiting for that. I was waiting for right. I knew I'm willing to where the bulls eye for all those so that the man they're listening will take. I'll take the arrows. But they're all listening the scandal much but when it comes to the healthcare providers office they are really hesitant about going any and but you know that's another feared that you have to overcome and you should overcome because your quality of life depends on you. You in charge of your help. Now you have to make sure and there are so many Sometimes some people say oh. I can't afford it. I can't afford to go. I don't have health insurance China's because some people may be.

"I can't tell you the last time I was able to fill a prescription. I just wanted to make sure that we're placing this conversation in human terms because the numbers are scary. The conflict of interest with this particular administration is immense and I'm glad that it's being investigated. But there are three hundred thousand plus people every single day that are having to ration their insulin just to live this is completely unacceptable, especially in a country. Wealthy as ours. So one thing that struck me in the article was this part where they talked about how roughly a quarter of people with diabetes, take less than the amount of insulin that they are prescribed because the drug is so expensive, and as folks, no, my wife, and I have had another baby, and we have a baby girl. She's about two weeks old. Now, we spent a lot of time in the hospital. There were a few complications and one night. We were in the emergency room everything ended up fine. But we were there as a precaution. And being in the emergency room for anyone who's been. There is such a profound reminder of the failures of our healthcare system in in that so many people and end up in the emergency room because they are not given or don't have access to or can't afford. So many of the things that they need that are easily preventable. This example, insulin is such a such an important in profound example of the way that are. Our healthcare system is failing so many people so migra mother was diabetic. And she needed insulin every day, and I would go and get the insulin. She helped raise us get the needle out of this little tin can and I never imagined. I like actually never thought about how much it costs as a kid. It was like I had no clue. But in preparing to talk about this today read all these stories of there's one story of a mom Linda burger some because he just they couldn't afford the insulin. Parents and kids who are sharing insulin because it rationing it out. And there's this one story where woman she almost winter diabetic coma because she didn't take enough of her ration that they were sharing her and her daughter, and it's a reminder of the failure of market ideology that the market economy like sets prices that didn't dictate like it's supply and demand, and we should just guarantee a set of things we should guarantee that people had the medicine to keep them alive. This shouldn't be dictated by who can afford it. And who can't we should guarantee that like people can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. This should be dictated who can afford it. And can't. And this is one of those things where it's like, there is a cure the intent behind the cure was everybody could have it like is a cure that we can actually mass produce. It's not like you got gotta destroy like twenty five thousand islands to get it. It's like we can actually figure it out. We actually have made a choice to because of an obsession with the idea that the market has to be regulated unfettered. And sort of the reality about all markets is that there's no pure market like every single market is regulated to some degree. It's like it is manipulated like that is regulations mean, and there is no pure market in this case, we could just say that we will guarantee that people have the dosage in nobody's like it's not like you're taking insulin and doing something else with it. It's like you're literally using it because you need it to stay alive. So this to me is a reminder of the guarantees that we should be making in society. And there were not. Yeah. Like, you said the failure of the market is clear in this case. And for so many of the. Sort of basic needs in our society, you know, with the wealthiest nation in the world. And yet when you look at what things are actually getting much much more expensive and out of reach for folks. It's things like healthcare. It's things like rent, right? Having a place to live. It's things like education being able to go to school to go to college afford that. So that you can get a job, right? So many things that are basic that should be guaranteed or not. And you look at the things that the prices are actually sort of going down the things that are getting cheaper..

"The we the burn fat directly we burn glucose directly we could actually make energy out of amino acids but we also can turn amino acid into glucose through ganea genesis as an emergency measure so that our brain has glucose now there's also key tones and key tones can be made out of either amino acids or fatty acids so either protein or that can be made in two key terms and key tones also can be used for energy and that's sort of the emergency emergency sort of energy supply when you don't you can't even make glucose people unlike palio diet intentional here here which are still enter contests there's no evidence at its beneficial maybe i don't think it's bad for you and lesser diabetic ray are not on lesser diabetic on that there's a threshold out after which its deadly yes and ask death russia was called kito acid doses so key tones are acidic and a little bit of key towse's fine physiologically again at home seemed and by not my reading of literature is there's no longterm or sustainable yardage to it because i think it happens just randomly tear like we just have times when we don't have enough sugar makes of nato it's fine it's another little safety valve but if if you with your so starved were of your diabetic and uk this way diabetics had because they they're they can't get sugar they have glucose but they can't get it into their cells because the insulin through either not making slender their insulin resistant saloons glucose levels are high in their blood but their cells or cells or simultaneously starved for glucose so then they have to make key terms for energy and then when you get past a certain point yet kyodo acid doses at overwhelms your body's ability to buffer the ph of your blood and then once you then that's really dangerous kdoi seduced his put you in a coma could potentially be fatal that's really dangerous yeah that's like when you hear people who went into diabetic coma that's what with they weren't kitawaga doses nath exactly right.
