"Here on the gs mc fantasy football podcast for the third segment of today's show. We're gonna talk about the one o'clock games on sunday and talk about some of the favorable and unfavorable matchups or each game. So let's start off with the steelers at the bill. So these two teams met late. In the season final score was twenty. Six to fifteen and yeah wasn't a good game for the sealers. But i feel like this. Game's going to be a lot different than it was when they last met. Because this is an early season matchup. Both teams are going to be relatively healthy. I believe stefan to what he's going to be out for a couple of games for the steelers early on but outside of that steelers coming in healthy. I think they're gonna put up a better fight than they did last year. So i'm going to say that ben rothlisberger has a decent game. I'm going to see if you know you you're thinking about starting ben. I think he could be a guy that you know. You could possibly start in this game. Because i like how the steelers offense played in the preseason i know was against some inferior teams like the lions but i just felt like ben. He looked like he had some zip on his ball. He was still able to do what he typically does doing his ben shimmy getting out of the pocket. You know avoiding getting hit stuff like that. And i feel like he's gonna do a little bit more of that this year. I don't think he's going to you. Know obviously be the quarterback that he was you know six seven years ago. I don't. I don't believe that. But i think that if he comes into the season healthy and motivated. I think he's a good season. But i think it all depends on the offensive line for the steelers. So i think ben can have a decent game here. I you know. I'm interested to see what the bills defense does. Now if you're debating on whether or not to start the bills defense. I do also think that you could start the bills defense because again what i say about. Ben doesn't really mean anything because a game hasn't happened yet. Because ben can easily go out there and not play well and play basically how he played in the game that they played last year and i play well so you know the bills could definitely be a positive play. Their defense as opposed to be better than it was last year. So if it is they definitely could be a positive play because also nause harrison has gotta get to the nfl still and obviously he's not going to be great out of the gate. So maybe you do start the bills events because at the steelers do the dinkins dunk stuff that they were doing for a large portion of the year. Their offense is not going to be very good. That's another reason why the offense might not be as if they continue the dink dong philosophy rather than doing what they should do and throw the ball deep now. Obviously ben. you know. He shouldn't be doing that. Forty fifty times a game because you know now he's thirty nine years old and you know again not the same player that he was back in the day. So yeah you can kind of have to adapt to how he plays. He plays now. But the steelers i think they have a good enough receiving core where they could figure it out. I think deontay. Johnson i think he can have a good game here. Think klay pool can have a good game here. I think the steelers they're gonna put up a fight in this game. Like i said but i also think you can start the bills defense. Well 'cause you know. This is what i think but you know what what we saw from the steelers offense later in the season last year i mean a lot of people are going to start the bills defense that they have and it's also the bills who are going to be a top team in the afc but then you look on the other side and you have the bills offense going up against the steelers defense in the steelers defense is healthy going into this season other than while going into this game other than the phone to being out they traded for keller witherspoon the corner from the forty niners and of course you still have joe haden back there. Who's getting older. And you'll make a fitzpatrick. Who's who is an absolute stud. Now you know it. It's gonna be interesting the bills there. There are one dimensional team. They are one dimensional team. They really don't have a running game. Josh allen is probably their best rusher and you know. I think that the steelers are going to have their hands. Full with digs and digs had a touchdown against them last year. So that's going to be a problem for them. But i just feel like because they're healthy going in this game they're gonna put up a better fight and they're gonna have another pass. Rusher ramon ingram. They brought in the lowest kyra word signing put him opposite of tj wide. I think that definitely does help. They got schober over from jacksonville. I think that definitely helps in the linebacking core devon bush's coming back from his acl tear so the steelers are going to be a different team in this game as opposed to when they played last year so when it comes to starting the steelers defense. I think people can definitely do that. But i just think maybe this is a weak. You probably hold off on the steelers defense and maybe look for other options. Possibly because i do have the in one of my leaks. But i know for a fact. It's going to be tough match up with them. Going up against the bills offense so i would say to be on the safe side. Probably look for other options. Maybe look for another defense. Start that week. But i do think that josh allen has a good game digs has a good game. I think those two are like the shore guys to do. Well the running backs though i mean i just you gotta really see what they do. They were disappointing last year. Between zack morrison single terry. Personally for me. I think breeders should be the lead running back for this team. But that's just me and then on the other side with the steelers. I mean i think you start the anti johnson and i think you start klay pool. I just don't trust jews. You i think you just very inconsistent and we'll see what they're tight end does the steelers Birth you know he was pretty good in the preseason against the lions the preseason game against the lions he had two touchdowns in that game so if he adds to this offense and there's another weapon for this team that definitely helps them out a lot in this game and he could be waiver. Wire pickup after week one. But we're just gonna have to wait and see and again like i said we're najji. It's gonna take some time for him to get used to the speed of the nfl..

The highest first year cap hit for two thousand inside linebacker. Free agent was six million dollars. I went through. It looked at the two thousand eighteen contracts in their first year. Hits for that fifteen million dollars. The steelers could assigned any inside linebacker. Running back and safety. They wanted and their cap. It would have been less than they paid to not have levy on the field though restate that they could have signed any inside linebacker safety and running back free agent that season and the cap hit in two thousand eighteen would have been lower than what the steelers paid to play. Hard ball with le vian bell if they do this with. Tj why and tj white says. Look i already showed you. I'm not playing this game right. You're gonna pay me and i'll be the best. I'll be the ideal player. i'll be the ideal teammate. I'll be everything you want me to be. But you're going to pay me what i want. And they say no. We're going to franchise tag you in tj watson. That played a pretty good role labor and they signed mark baron. That played a pretty good role to they had steven nelson other receivers didn't need as much help make of. It's patrick played a role in that but mostly it was the guys covering the tight ends which vault mark barron he did that. A lot though signings signings like that occur when you have cap space. We've seen the steelers us cap space. Well in twenty twenty one. Twenty twenty two tj. Let's no. i'm not playing on this franchise tag and the steelers say we're tagging you anyways. The steelers aren't going to be able to replace teachers. They're going to tie up so much. Money in tj y and get nothing for it except a rollover for the next season that they can use to again spend a whole bunch of money out of their cap to simply play hardball with tj. Meanwhile if you know this ben rothlisberger might be gone. Tj tj want to sit out this year that would actually be less bad for the steelers enfranchise tagging him like how. How far does this go. Everyone everyone talks. Tj white has no choice but just to play for the next three years in the steelers have control over how much he gets paid with the franchise tag and with this year option. But when you sit and you have a large chunk of your salary cap with no productivity out of that money even if you don't actually spend the money and you get that cap hit back at the end of the year. You're still not getting anything for that. You're not getting the production now. Furthermore if you play hardball. Tj wide like bell. You're going to get a reputation in on the steelers right. You're gonna get a hit on the steelers you're going gonna take that shot and you right now. The steelers are team are free agents talk about. Oh i'd love to play for the ceiling. It is one of my favorite shows. It's it's not. The like is not like this show is not film room so they talk about social media. They make jokes there. It's it's hilarious. Show if you want you know your friday you wanna just kinda take a little more lighthearted. Look at the week from the steelers and how people have been overreacting to everything steelers related. You all know steeler fans. We overreact to literally everything. The steelers not every single person but steeler fans. Do you know you probably know several steeler fans especially if you live in pittsburgh whoever react and if not i mean really go on twitter steelers you will find overreactions all over the place. These guys do a great job. Great job of lampooning. All of the the worst twitter takes about the steelers is a really fun show. I really really enjoy it. And i encourage you to check it out in the second half of the show. We are going to get to tj. While we're gonna talk about. I'm gonna give you my perspective and what i think I i i dabble in economics. I studied it in college. I do a lot with that. And my opinion is the most popular with those situations. But you may find my take a little different on the tj watt situation. All right anyways the depth chart we talked. We talked about the nickel position. Some other interesting stuff One is marcus. Allen is listed as devon bush's backup ahead of both ulysses gilbert's third and buddy johnson. There were people. Say oh marcus allen. They should call him. He made the roster last year transitioning linebacker and he wasn't going to play except on except on special teams. But when devon bush went down he took over the dime linebacker job and did alright. You don't just like replace. Debit bush right. That's not a fame. But he was all right position not great. I was surprised as preseason to see marcus allen looking significantly better than he did last season His blitzing was better. His coverage was better. Coming out of the backfield better overall player. This preseason than he was last year also he played a bit in the slide. The steelers would come out looking like they're in nickel and basically. Just use marcus allen as a nickel defender as the nickelback right which is interesting to me. I know we have joe show on the team. I know we have devon. I assume that those two will be the linebackers a nickel or interested to see. Is there clearly gonna take one of them. Out for dime. They can put in marcus allen in dime and have him be both a slot coverage guy kind of the mike hilton role in the dime. Where you're the more physical corner because cameras sutton was more of a deep coverage specialists or just an overall coverage special. I shouldn't just say deep coverage coverage specialist. Marcus allen could be that kind of a mike. He'll enroll and if they move around in their lineup. Look like hey we're gonna be in we're going to be all these wide receivers and then give them more run. Look marcus allen could move in and play linebacker. Because that's his position. Now you can marcus allen. Cover marcus allen. Struggled to cover he in. This preseason got matched up with dj more on the carolina panthers game and did phenomenal job in man coverage on dj more. Who have to be a guy who's almost twelve hundred yards the last two years each so that could be an interesting thing to watch possibly in dime and also when if they rotate inside linebackers. It all see where. Marcus allen lives where he when he comes in The big news. Of course the steelers put zach banner on injured reserve and on this depth chart. It's official dan moore. Junior is listed as the starting left tackle for the pittsburgh. Steelers with giacoma. Cora for right tackle that means on the left side of the line from the center to the left tackle. You have two rookies and player. Who played three hundred sixty snaps on offense total and his career all last season. Who wasn't a bit of a dog house earlier this year. Now they are your left side of the line. Brown dotson were phenomenal. When they played together they were incredible and dominated together. They're going to be playing together. Looking forward to that Looking forward to see what kendra green brings. There could be some serious growing pains. You're talking about young men being thrown into the fire just to start learn on the job in a messy situation. I'm excited for it. I actually i liked to see. I like to see the growth player show and we're gonna see the struggles in we're going to see the growth All i can say hopefully they come together and are really solid unit. You know when when they get to that point before they get. Ben rothlisberger hurt because who. That's that's the question they're can. They keep ben rothlisberger safe. Can they give him a pocket. Let him operate so we don't have the situation. We had last year when the offensive line fell. Apart and ben was forced to throw the ball in less than two seconds often plays where he threw the ball in two seconds. Guy hit for it. Like two seconds isn't enough time for anyone to get open. You're throwing before anyone gets open. Andrew taking a hit. that's terrible. hopefully this lying can do better than that and give him a real chance because if they can man this could be a great year by the time they really get comfortable playing together and get and get going especially if they can get the run game stronger on that side. It's just a huge boost. Get nausea harris running. Just open up the whole offense. Those are my thoughts on the depth chart. I wanna gonna move onto the pressing story right now as of i. I think that ben may be able to stay healthy because of how quickly. He's getting rid of the ball. He no quarterback in the league through it quicker than ben and no quarterback in the league through closer. to the line of scrimmage. The upside here is that matt canada. The new offense coordinator who is the quarterbacks coach last year but was it wasn't able to infuse all of his ideas and strategies. Because you had another guy calling the plays and actually running the offense last year and randy fichtner who i didn't really care for on candidate loves some of the things that ben didn't necessarily do a lot of play action. A lotta pre. Snap motion if they do. These things in ben actually says fine. I know i'm old in this league. But i'll try it so that we can try to win games he came back took less money etc etc. Then there could be some upside. My big concern isn't necessarily the offense. You're right bill. They do have some very good skill position players in think running back talent with najah is is certainly acceptable. The issue for me is this strength of schedule in their defense. I think they've got probably the number one or number two best front seven and they went out and they acquired another layer a couple of weeks ago. This is a very good front seven. The problem is they are now playing the number two most difficult schedule of past offenses in the league season. They were playing basically a bottom five schedule of pass offense. As last year with the nfc east in the afc south in the mix last season i think the secondary is going to be challenging. What happens is let's pretend the steelers guetta lead and they're playing pretty well defy opposing offenses are gonna have to pass the ball. Boom you're passing against the weakness of the steelers. Which is that secondary. So you can't allow your qb to get sacked in those instances but if you can stand up to the steelers pass rush. I think that secondary the steelers is going to be much worse this year than it was last season in sharp. It's even worse than that. Because according to my diligent research they're very worried about the linebackers until devon bushes one hundred percent just being able to cover people out of the backfield and tight ends and stuff like that so Yeah there'd be some some pressure it's gonna be an interesting one. I i could this to me are the are the all time i could see them going. Five and twelve. And i could see them going like they have the widest variants to me. The ravens is more of just like i hate when seasons haven't even started yet and you've lost one of your best players. I always feel like there's a bad juju team where it's like. Ooh that's a bad sign to lose somebody who's probably one of our five or six best guys just quickly on the skill position guys. In the steelers naji harris klay pool. Schuster the anti johnson. And let's say fryer mode turns out to be really good like how pits good but legs level down. I don't think there's five teams that have sco position guys like that right just for people that will actually get drafted in a fantasy league. All five of those guys. But i mean even a team that you wouldn't even consider necessarily to be great this year like the dallas cowboys. So the steelers front seventy is in really good shape and really are going to allow a guy like outside smith to be as successful as he possibly could be in the position. He's in he's set up very well but he's going to have to perform If he could have a ten sack season that would be absolutely incredible in my books. I think that'd be kind of a top of the line projection. Four guy like alex highsmith. I'm not necessarily banking on it. Believe me That's kind of the ceiling. I foresee for this youngster. I could see him right around like to seven and a half eight sack total but really his season is gonna come down to what he can do up against the run if he doesn't get pushed around and really kind of established himself as a force. We know it took bud dupree about four. Four years to really get everything to click and he had a first round pedigree Outside of course what a third round pick so it might take him marginally longer. But i think he will have a better year to than bud to did Way back i guess that would have been twenty sixteen when bud dupree was having his second season so looking at this at the two stars. I think we clearly see. Tj what is poised to be one of the best players in the in the entire nfl. Altai smith sure. There's some question marks behind him but he could have an outstanding little season for himself just based on being in such a perfect system for any edge rusher to be in He's gonna he's gonna get a ton of one on one match ups from. He may never face a double team the entire season considering. What's around him. Alex highsmith is Is due for a big year. If he doesn't have one that could be a bit of a concern and the steelers might start to look outside the organization next off season Just based on how.

I haven't seen that out of devon bush like he is a flashy player that you see with with splash plays i. I don't know if he's been particularly effective. And he's coming off of a major injury and that that is a thin position for the steelers if you wanna pick on their defense. Their defense was number one in dvd last year. It was a good defense. But they've lost a couple of people and they need devon bush To be to take a big step and people are just kind of assuming it's going to happen. It's like i got to see that happen. I mean also. I think the thin at cornerback. I'll stay in the afc north. And you know if you wanna talk about a team that could be experiencing some shortness of breath. Maybe even heart issues. If they don't get production at the pass rushing position it could be the ravens. And greg points out that you know every year it feels like they lose their number one dude and like that happened again but the now of thomas bowser pernell mcphee and jalen ferguson as their lead dudes who last year. And you know they have the rookie too. But last year those guys combined for seven six you're asking and the ravens aren't necessarily like when your rookie jumping in play as much as you normally would like. They kind of slow bake them so they're going to need help there. I also look at their backup quarterback position. If anything happens to lamar jackson i guess. Maybe it's cliche to say you worry about lamar jackson getting injured. But he's that kind of a quarterback. Your backup is trace mcsorley. Who i like is like a maybe a little gadget type player here there. But i wonder if erica who is always enacted. Gm might look for some veterans in both of those spots heading towards the end of training camp to patch that up. I think we got a glimpse of what the ravens would look like with trace mcsorley in that monday night. Game against the browns. Leaving are jackson had to run to the locker room. Some people are bullish. On kevin dobson at left guard they drafted et cetera in the third round kendra green. We'll see if he starts. And you'd have david decastro but i'm not happy about tackles from this point right now in another next gen dive. Real quick this dealers were second. Last in the league in expected rushing yards per attempt which basically measures how effective their offensive line is the only team that is worse than them was the browns but the difference between the browns in them was the bras. Running backs overcame that consistently. They posted the best rushing yards over expectation in the entire. Nfl the steelers. And that was it Plus one point one five yards per attempt so the running backs were consistently exceeding expectations and doing their job to a very high degree. The steelers were at negative zero point. Zero one yards per attempt so the running effective and their offense of lime is also ineffective. So if you run back a line that looks very similar this year you add nausea harris. That's a lot to put on the shoulders of a rookie. Who does have lot of mileage on him. coming out of alabama. So i think that's gonna be a big thing to watch For the steelers this year. And how in the chances for their offense if we're carving up the afc north. I might as well plug in on the bengals here and greg. You pointed out and it makes sense. There's potential here for this offense to take a big jump now. The joe burrow. Acl situation ripped up his knee. Something fierce And it's good that he's back practicing not as and you hope he's close to the same guy there's a bit of projection here that he makes the second nearly and improves as a player of the knee cooperates. And then you have. You know you got your march as they're now You have tyler boyd. Underrated guy t higgins joe mixing running back. I don't know what to take from the joe mixing experience at this point but we know fantastically talented and he still has prime years ahead of them. The offensive line. As you point out greg maybe Maybe penny sewell would have been the guy a logical pick there but you know what there are pieces there that they that are developing at the offensive line gets better and they did bring in riley review of course there to help on that end with these weapons and boroughs potential. I'm not saying there's going to be four teams in the afc north with nine plus wins. I just think that cincinnati might moxham things up and you know the the bullies like sessile in the browns looking down and pointing and laughing at them. They might not be doing that. If this team comes together a little quickly more quickly than people anticipate. I mean a year ago. I said that. I thought zac taylor had a chance to be coach of the year. I think a lot of it comes down to the specialness taylor brings. But i don't think the bengals are a two or three win team. They they have a pretty pretty good roster on offense they should be a team that goes out and you know. They beat tennessee last year. That's the one game. I look at where i thought you. Kinda got a glimpse bad teams. Give you a little glimpse of what they can be with. Borough healthy and all that business. They lost their quarterback. The floor fell out. They've been ravaged by injuries. Really as much as any team in that division or that conference over the last couple of years. You haven't really had a chance to see what they can be. They can win eight games. I don't know if the defense is going to be worth a damn there..

I mean i have a weird feeling to that just looking at kind of reading. The tea leaves and seeing how good of a job because a lot of this is salesmanship from the coaches to from the college coaches. And i think that many. Da's being down there has really helped the the player transition to the nfl. Like i think he's done a good job of selling people on these guys you know and and making some of these guys into first round picks and so i think. That's you know worth noting. I think he probably pounds the table for some like rousseau. And you know there's a lot of talent there and you know. I don't think that anybody's going to complain about the opt-out thing. I mean our colleague. Alex proof that a great story with yourself. But you know that doesn't bother me and i don't think that's gonna bother teams either. Yep no i think you really gonna worry about rousseau. It's kind of a one year wonder type of deal. And and i think he just you'll live with that and that's that's just the way it is so gregor russo to the jets at twenty three which brings us to the steelers at twenty four. Now the steelers that you could probably circle Cornerback as a need. Maybe you want a little more depth at linebacker after things kinda fell apart there in the worst possible way. Though you're probably you're probably feeling okay about it with devon bush coming back maybe wanna go find a you know. Do you believe in alex. Smith a. this point. And even if you don't maybe want a third rusher but the thing that i find fascinating about the steelers offense is are they going to do something different than they did. Last year they never evolved past this sort of They came out early year with this quick strike offense and this this motion and this horizontal attack and it was new and it was like. Oh that's really cool. They never did this stuff before. And just wait until they start building off of it and then he just never built off they just stuck with the same quick strike thing all year if you are opting to do that and i don't think that's great idea. But should they opt to do that. You're looking at the offensive line and just saying okay. Yeah we're fine with Chewy occur and and zach banners tackles. And y'all because it's just not kind of like we talked about earlier in the show with derek carr. It's just not a high priority thing to build up your pass protection when the ball's coming out two seconds after the snap if you are going to expand your offense which i think..

No one's quite a fire quarterback but you know essentially if the if the league feels really good about you. You're coming off the board. In the first round mason. Rudolph was guy who came in with with downfield accuracy questions. And you've kind of seen it. It just hasn't worked out for him there. There's no reason to think he's going to be the next guy in pittsburgh and that's how it usually works out with these day. Two picks so young they did take a flyer on the guy. It didn't work out. and you. Kinda of your shrug your shoulders. I i'll say this about their offense. Last september and october when they sort of rolled out you think of the men rothlisberger off over the years. It's those that classic Of the arts and the and the two thousand ten that classic yo static formations notion eyeso- routes and then last year old son. They run out all the present motion. And it's this quick strike horizontal passing attack that you never seen from the steelers. Certainly during the rothlisberger era And by mid october. It's like okay this. This is neat. Now let's see you blend in the old stuff okay. Let's let's see it but start now now now and just never came and end look rothlisberger in his prime was good. A thrower of the football is anyone in the league. I mean is some some of the things he was able to do with guys hanging off his body. Y'all it he's not going to be at that level again but you did see flashes. I do think back to the game that they won in baltimore earlier in the season where You know that was sort of that back and forth battle lamar and not a much of a in either. Interceptions had some turnovers in that game. Ended up being the The steelers win on that mick fitzpatrick break-up but that was a game or the steelers did nothing.
