Bills earn first division win of the season over Patriots | THE CARTON SHOW
"The bills earned a 24 ten win over the Patriots while putting pressure on the dolphins to win on Sunday. Josh Allen threw for two touchdowns as buffalo moved a half game ahead of Miami atop the AFC east. Allen became the first player in NFL history with three seasons of 25 passing touchdowns and 5 rushing scores. Devin Singletary added a one yard run to help the 9 and three bills get their first division win. New England was held to a field goal over the final three quarters and dropped to 6 and 6. Mac Jones was 22 of 36 for just 195 yards in the TD. I'm Dave ferry.

"One else that he's been the whole offense. Yeah, he's a responsible for pretty much everything, yes. You know, and for me, the one thing that just really echoed that today was, you know, watching the first half, I was blown away by Devin Singletary. The Iran's and catches that he had. What a great war in touchdowns on the drought. What a great player he was in space and it's like, man, and then it's funny like the second half and overtime and I'm like, I couldn't remember the last time he touched the football. And I do think this goes back to that they do put a lot on Josh. And sometimes losses like this as tough as they are, I think it can be a growing experience and this is a team that obviously has the highest of expectations. So I do look for them to rebound. Josh, I think, is only going to be more driven and we'll learn from this and get better. So the other team that we need to now praise and marvel at truly, for the first time, I feel like I'm doing this in earnest, Alex. Is the Minnesota Vikings. I mean, and I want to start here on their side of things just with Justin Jefferson to get back to him. Again, because he was as unstoppable, it felt like in this game as any receiver has been all year. He had ten catches, 139 yards, a touchdown, and the degree of difficulty here, not just on that catch that we talked about, but across the board. I mean, NFL next gen stats pointed this out about this game. He averaged just 1.5 yards of separation on his 16 targets. He was considered open on exactly one of those targets, and so he was blanketed by the bill's defense, and it did not matter. Is the point there. What aspect of Justin Jefferson is most mind-blowing to you as a quarterback when you watch him? me, to me, he's the epitome. He's a 5 tool receiver, right? To steal a baseball analogy, like there are no weaknesses. This guy can do it all. And there's a lot of specialty receivers in the NFL. Hey, this guy's a deep thread. This guy's really quick, but not fast, right? This guy's a big body possession receiver, right? There's all these Justin Jefferson is the total package, right? Like this guy can do it all. I mean, he is a big target, long, I mean, you can see it on the spectacular catches he made all day. Being able to elevate and make these acrobatic catches. And at the same time, they move him around in this offense. This is the same offense with Kevin McConnell, he just come from the rams, all the stuff, the same stuff they were doing with Cooper Cup. This is what Justin Jefferson is doing. They put him in the slot, he's running choice routes. They put him outside, he can win one on one outside the numbers. They move him around and do all kinds of different things with him, and he can handle it. And I think when you take that on and you have a creative obviously offense that that's willing to move you around, you have a quarterback that is certainly trusts you and obviously with the stats you just said, willing to throw the ball you even when you're covered because he's going to make it right. And I just watching him again, I just really, that's like what comes to mind. This guy can do it all. And they do move him around. The best example for me obviously with Cooper Cup last year kind of went in the Triple Crown of receiving in this same system and really this is Justin Jefferson is doing the same things. And in some aspects, can maybe even do a little more in a one on one scenario split outside the numbers, but again, how do you take him away? You just never know where he's going to be, right? They're moving them around constantly, he's motioning. He's such a threat in all facets and situations of the game. And then again, I think just the competitiveness he showed today down the line was just, it was amazing to watch as a fan. I think you only need to see it. You have to respect it and obviously tip your hat to it. Yeah, I mean, let's talk about the guy who was scheming up ways to get him open or at least get the ball to him despite him being not open. The guy who was just feeding him repeatedly, Kevin O'Connell, right? This is your guy, Alex, you go back with him, we've discussed this on the show before, but the head coach of the Vikings has his team Aiden won. They have won 7 straight. They're one losses to the undivided eagles who will get to in a second here in week two. How do you assess the job that he's done to turn this team? This team that I did not expect to be a contender to be a contender for real seemingly in the NFC. Yeah, it's crazy that they're eating one and I think this is the first time we've talked about them. All year. And I don't think that's a bad thing. You know, I've been texting with them all year kind of saying how they've been flying under the radar and that maybe that's not a bad thing. They're a young team, new coaching staff. They're still kind of close games. They've won all of these games they've won in a row, have all been super, super nail biting. Yep. But I was with Kevin when he went from quarterback coach to offensive coordinator, which was a big jump. And I think given that situation, sometimes, you know, all of a sudden, now he's the leader of a room, right? Now he's not just in the quarterback room, but he's talking to the entire offense, right? Oh, lineman receivers, tight ends, we're running back. He's got to deal with all the personalities. He's got to get up there and lead this entire unit. And I think the thing that impressed me so much watching that transition was just how unchanged Kevin was, right? Like, it wasn't too big for him at all. He was the same that he was the day before when he was the quarterback coach. Like, he just had this great self confidence about him. He has this great energy and positivity about him that people respond to. And so for me, I think that was such an encouraging thing knowing that when he was going to get his shot to be a head coach, he's going to be the same, right? It's not going to be too big for him. And I think we've seen that. And I think the way they've been winning speaks to that. I mean, their last 5 games, they've been losing in the fourth quarter and have come back to win with game winning drives. Right. And I think to have that kind of calmness. I mean, this is a young, young head coach in the NFL is this first time doing it. But to have that kind of comment, you just see him on the sideline. And he's in total control, he's always thinking he's not distracted by the situation, right? He's locked in. And I think guys respect that and you see those details kind of come out. I think you see that it's contagious, right? Like, he's not riding the roller coaster. The people under him, therefore, aren't either, and I think that trickles all the way down to the players. And you see them in these huge situations again, repeatedly, that last 5 weeks in fourth quarters making the plays here and there to win these ball games. And so we kind of kept saying is this team for real, you know, that kind of, I think, was the grumblings there. They haven't beaten anybody. Is this team for real? Well, to go into buffalo and win this ball game is it doesn't get any bigger than that. They've now they've also beaten the dolphins. I know it didn't. It was a two a list dolphins, but they've got some great wins under their belt. We got some great momentum at this point. They do have, you

"And I think that's kind of the thing that makes you laugh a little bit is we had been clamoring for that for years with Russell Wilson. Leading the way and now it's Geno Smith that apparently has a little bit more carte blanche in terms of how much they're going to pass. And the run game was pretty efficient yesterday too. That was working. That was humming. Everything was working yesterday against that Detroit Lion defense. And while neither of those defenses will leave you brimming with confidence, I also have to give a hat tip to Dan Campbell and the Lions offense who now leads the league in points per game despite a one in three record out of the gates and they did so yesterday without arguably their top two weapons for sure and maybe their top three if you threw a DJ chart in there. So pretty entertaining football game from start to finish. Always nice when one team goes over the total that was available entirely on their own in a 48 45 shootout. Payton, I want to go to Baltimore and it's not necessarily give the ravens credit because they got shut out in the second half by the bills defense, but we talk all the time about coaching clock management decision making and I do want to come back to one part of the decision making that factored into buffalo winning the game 23 20. But the bills perfectly coached knew exactly what they needed to do over the course of running their four minute offense. 12 plays 77 yards. They took four O 9 off the clock and most importantly, Devin Singletary and Josh Allen got down inside the one allowed them to bleed the clock out, never letting Lamar Jackson get the football back with a chance to either win or tie in the game's final minute. Yeah, there was a lot of meh and mediocre play among the winners in week four. So what we're talking about this, we really had to dig deep to find some positives. The bills are used to taking time off the clock and methodically moving the ball this season. So that really wasn't changed for them. But I think you give them credit, right? After poor situational football last week right before the half against Miami that negated some points, when it counts most against Baltimore, they write it that wrong, and it was not just the endgame situation, but again right before the end of the half, right? You think about that game first half down 20 to three with 90 seconds to go. Buffalo goes on that 76 yard march to at least get themselves back in the game. And then the final drive, Josh Allen just went Superman. He only faced two second downs on that final drive, obviously the big one, of course, was second 11 where he finds Devin Singletary dumps it off for 16. It really felt like Baltimore executed as bad as humanly possible in the most critical moments yesterday. Lamar throws picks at times. You simply can not throw them. The defense couldn't get stops and the biggest moment in Buffalo steals a big conference win on the road, despite being down 20 to three. That's now, you think about Baltimore in this context. Second game in four weeks Baltimore is blown a three score lead at home. Yep. You can't do those kind of things. And I know this is a team that we had a buy signal on and certainly they should be for with all of the injuries. And now you're thinking to yourself, for now, commanding lead in the conference, going to continue getting healthier, you liked what you saw from dobbins and small doses, he continues to get a little bit more burn. Ronnie Stanley practiced a bunch last week, wasn't out there, but that's at least trending in the right direction. And so Baltimore, to me, has lost a golden opportunity. They have to create some leeway here before deshaun Watson is able to get back. And this is just a tough conference to be giving away wins. I ultimately think when we look at those two conferences and we think about the horsepower that's in the AFC, home field advantage is going to be massive. That's now 5 straight losses in a building where it used to be damn near impossible to go in and beat the home team in the form of the Baltimore Ravens into your point talking about doing it in improbable fashion when you're blowing three score leads. Against teams that you know are going to be your biggest competition within the AFC. Those are games you have to win. I do want to ask and not for a hot take purposes or anything else, but because I always value your input more in terms of X's and O's and situational football, then what I see and a lot of the Talking Heads that are out there. John Harbaugh electing new go for it on fourth down rather than kick the field goal up 23 to 20. I know you're from the Uber aggressive camp. Did you like what he was doing there, trying to get a text kicked a field goal? Okay. Yeah. That instance? Absolutely. Always curious. I mean, I know sometimes the numbers suggest one thing and so you play game situation and flow a little bit different wasn't sure what your takeaway there is. It's a little different when part of the algorithm there is how many possessions are left in a game. And I think at that juncture, it's field goal, let your defense in weather. Get you a final stop. I think that's the right play there. And it wasn't like a give me, was it? If my recollection serves me, that was what fourth and goal. From the story. Three or four, I believe. Yeah, I mean, right. It's a different conversation if we're sitting there and saying, hey, this is fourth and one from the four, where we just need to pick up one. And if we do, we drain out the clock and buffalo never gets it back. That's not the thought process here. And then to make matters worse, we understand how well Lamar Jackson's played MVP if we were to grade things after three weeks, but not just that drive, but go back to the prior interception. It's first down and you're in midfield in a tie game. Can't throw an interception there. And then in this instance, the decision for Harbaugh looks worse because you throw an interception in the back of the end zone. It's different. If you just get stopped and buffalo starts their possession on the three yard line. But they get it out to the 20 now because you threw it in the back of the end zone. If you throw it through out the back of the end zone, I understand it's fourth down. You don't want to just give the game away. You want to fit it into a tight space. Hopefully it's a touchdown. Maybe you draw a PI. But the play call and the way they would attack is much different if buffalo starts that possession on the three or four yard line as opposed to the 20. Yeah, I think that's an important point that nobody seemed to address. In that kind of situation, you always want to give your receiver and your skill position players, a chance to go out there and make plays. But if you go in that ball into the stands, buffalo is in the shadow of their own end zone to your point, the play calling is significantly different.

"That's how good it was. You know? It almost kills you, but you just love it. It's true. So I'm sorry, we were talking about the massive weight loss of the bills offensive lineman after Miami. It's just gonna be because I tend to, you know, just put a little asterisk next to teams coming off massive snap counts on the defensive side of the ball. And this will be interesting to see, you know, they certainly stylistically play in a fashion where you don't need your offensive line to absolutely dominate in this game. You have a quarterback who obviously solves a lot of problems. And you like to throw the ball around. And I think they have done such a good job of winning with off script stuff to the point where I was really, I've been really impressed with Isaac McKenzie we knew could do that. It was gonna be a big part of that. Devin Singletary, I think, impressed me a lot in terms of, I think he's better understanding when Josh Allen is on the move. How can I make myself more useful? And how can I make myself more valuable to the offense? And I think with a sort of really smartly paired check down option that is going to be as dynamic as Josh elm. Like if you can fit in that role and be that guy, I remember just thinking like ladainian Tomlinson used to be so good at that. I mean, that's part of the reason that it made him such a good player. And I'm not comparing the two of them. So stop it. But, you know, I think that that is trouble against a relatively young secondary, especially, you know, and Kyle Hamilton had a good game last week, but some of these guys are going to have to be forced to cover a lot. And Ken Dorsey has proven that even without Brian Abel, he can get those match ups, he can get these guys in space. It's going to be a tough assignment. It's been a really interesting sort of evolution of this offense here, because look, you said it early in the preseason, you know, everyone's going to be looking for the check down, guys. With all these split safety looks, all these conservative secondaries, it's going to be the year of the check down. And we've seen that in some places where it's already kind of become predictable. You know, we talked about this a little bit about the Sunday Night game and you have a quarterback in Denver who is kind of chosen to frequently check down, but has also strangely not taken advantage of opportunities to run for large chunks of yards.

"devin singletary" Discussed on Greg Bedard Patriots Podcast with Nick Cattles
"First half against the saints, who don't even have an offense, he was terrible in the first half on Thanksgiving. Rebounding in the second half, but you know, going up against Trevor Simeon, anybody can do that. But I think Bill knows how to play Josh Allen. You change up the looks. They have to be banking that he's going to throw them at least a couple balls in the game and I'm sure Belichick is back there saying like, are you going to catch those? He's going to throw balls to us. He's going to hang in the pocket too long. He's going to allow himself to be strip sacked. Are we going to take advantage of those opportunities or not? Because I think on the road in the weather conditions that we will likely get on Monday night, the Patriots are going to need to do that. Yeah, the weather it's going to be very windy as far as the report goes now, of course, the old corny joke. If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes, but right now it's supposed to be very windy, windshield of like 17. So it's going to be cold and windy. We'll get to who that might favor in a couple of minutes. A couple more notes offensively quickly about the bills. You mentioned the turnovers Greg and by the way, I completely agree with you about Josh Allen as a quarterback. And if you look at one of the weaknesses for this offense for buffalo, is they turn the football over. And that has to do with the quarterback. Allen has 7 interceptions in his last four games. So he's going to chuck it up. You're going to have a chance in, you know, mister interception might come down with one or two on Monday night, another weakness and people might kind of be misled when you look at the numbers because they're rushing offense when you look at the numbers, statistically is really good. It's pretty damn good. But a lot of that is Josh Allen. The running back production has not been consistent for this team all year long. Zach moss has been in and out of the lineup. Devin Singletary has not been the guy they thought he would be. They brought in Matt Breda. He played a pretty good game a couple of weeks ago, but this run offense. If you contain, if you play disciplined football and you contain Josh Allen with his legs, buffalo doesn't run the ball well. So I think that's a big weakness. Now as far as strengths to be fair to buffalo, and to kind of warn patriots fans, what they do well, I'll give you three things. Number one, they're great on third down. They are the second best team in the NFL on third down offense. So I kind of go back to the Chargers game when I talked about first and second down. Yes, that's always crucial. But against the Chargers, it was even more so. And I think Monday night even more so. You can not allow the second best third down offense in the league to be looking at third and three or less. You just can't do it. They're going to move the chains are going to kill you. The second thing they do well, red zone offense. They're just on the outside of the top ten in the red zone. Ryan day ball, when they get in the red area, they usually cash in. The Pats, the old Ben, don't break. They can't break in that red zone. And finally, chunk plays Greg. There's 6th in the league in yards per play. So, you know, Stefan Diggs is a guy that can hurt you with the chunk play. Allen with his legs can get you 20 to 25. Emmanuel Sanders, every once in a while, can beat you downfield. We've seen Dawson Knox make a couple of catches downfield..

You're the Steelers are now making you do What they want you to do, and that is Don't throw the ball to digs. Don't throw it to be easily. Don't throw out the Sanders Don't throw it to Davis handed off to Devin Singletary. And I just think you've got to stay with your strength and basically I think the philosophy to stay with their strength was good. The quarterback needed to make more plays and the offensive line needed to stop Steelers players from running all over their quarterback all day long in the pass rush, just looking at their second drive of the game. I mean the first drive They go past past past and then kick the field goal after the long kick return to open things up their second drive. It's uh, an eight yard run for Singletary on the first play, and then a two yard run for a first but a 10 yard penalty. They got holding power. They had three holding panel on the drive. One of them was declined. I think because it was a third down in completion but had three holding penalties. They were moving the ball on that drive, and they kept taking it felt like it was going to be one of those 130 yard drives. Yeah, yeah, you know, because you were back in yourself up 10 yards all the time. You're on hold. "W. G are the bills drop a heartbreaker at home 23 to 16. After leading much of the game. The bills give up or our art scored 23 to 6 in the second half to lose at home in the season opener. They dropped in one of the season. And, uh, collectively, bills fans angered, which is, which is a fair response to the disappointing game. Today I on the quarterback, and it's brought to you by Great Lakes building systems. We keep an eye on your business so you don't have to Great Lakes building systems. Our business is protecting. Your business, Josh Neon and the day 31 of 5200 and 71 Yards, one touchdown, no interceptions. He did have a fumble and on that on that T J Watt sack early in the game, and otherwise, this was Josh Allen broke a career high for passing attempts in a game with 51. I suspect that won't be the last time that he eclipses the 50 attempt to mark this season. Hopefully, with better results 83 or 5, 51 8885 52 5 50. I've got lots of colours. So we're just going to continue going to the phone lines here. Let's go to Joe and Amherst who has been waiting patiently, Joe, you're on the new wave energy your time, guys. Yes. Partially, uh, your commentary earlier, right? You said that. The bills We get part of their teams are offensive line. That's number one number two. You said that they were in Josh Allen space all game well. You know, the average fan doesn't think of this The reason. Then what do you do? You don't go to empty backfield on 60% of the place. You're going to their strength, which is the past is one of their most efficient formations that they have. Yeah, but that's great. But when it's not working, how is it done The last two games. Kansas City and Pittsburgh is beaten us with four men pass rush. See, that's where a smart coordinator has to has to go away from that. What? What? What would you suggest? What would you suggest They do, though? What's that? What would you suggest they do like that's their identity is throwing the football but the identity if it's not working, they this series before Devin Singletary was in the backfield. They went the length of the field and then when they want to get down to the secured line through the ball two times tomorrow, and then the third time they scored touchdown. You have to freeze the defensive ends. You have to hold them. Given the play action. It's not working when when you one dimensional. They can t off and then on the bills, and our offensive line is the weakest part of that team. In another statement you made was we didn't have the resources to bring in up money for offensive linemen. Bill Belichick would have gotten rid of to 34 year old defensive and three years ago at $20 Million combined and use that money on the outfits of wine, and that's the difference and jump in the line is the weakest part of our team, and they didn't address it and And we want to get into the plate. Collinwood Gable in the conservative That's again with McDermott. He did it in the Kansas City game and He played. He played to play defense in a settlement. Well, well, the defense Joe What? Shut down Pittsburgh all day and like, I I'm not going to say that the reason the bills lost this game or what contributed to the game was Sean McDermott not going forward on fourth down in his own in his own territory on 4th and 4/4, and three like they're not going to go through. It was 4th and 240 Yard line. 3 40, though Joe downplays he passed the ball. Yeah, that's what they do. They passed the ball. We want the reason they won 13 games last year wasn't because they turned around in him two handed the ball off the Devin Singletary. They won 13 wait a minute. That about was the second law off the threat of running the ball. It's not. It's not that they were playing action more than anybody in the league last year, Joe Wait a minute. Last you who cares about last year? What about today? Tons of play action today began it. Singletary was not even watching Joe Joe, You're mad to be mad and I get it. You're mad, Joe. Everyone's mad, but don't run empty. Turn around and hand the ball off the Devin Singletary. Give me a break. Give me a break. Joe. That's a bad take this team on 13 games last year with one of the highest quality passing offenses in the league. They ran play action more than anybody, which is statistically known to be one of the most effective ways to move the ball down the field that we're David Bryant able run a good game plan today. No, he didn't. It's not because they didn't run the ball more, and it's not because they didn't run play action. That's right. That's just a bad take Joe. It's just not a good one. And I'm going. I'm not going to take that. They gotta run less empty. There They are, as if they could run empty every play. I would love it. That would be fantastic. They had. They struggled to beat zone coverage today. The There wasn't a lot of open guys. There just wasn't The offensive line did not do a good job holding up. It's not like Josh Allen head was running for his life. I said early in the broadcast here that he wasn't running for his life. But there are six holding calls. Six like it's hard to overcome in any game, so I don't know. I just I I don't agree with those takes at all. They were in plenty of play action. They didn't go for it a couple times on fourth down, Guess what? They're not going to go forward. Every time the defense was playing really, really good. So you pump the ball and force that team. To go 90 yards, which they were on able to do multiple times in the first half, because They punted on fourth down, pin them deep in their own territory, and they put it back to us, so I don't know. I just I don't buy Any of what you were saying there that they've got to get their got their predictable. Yeah, they did. The same thing last year won 13 games. What are you talking about? Their predictable They need to have a running game like no kidding. They need to have a running game. I mean, if anything, if anything would have happened by, you know, week, eight weeks, eight weeks nine last year. I think team sort of figured out there passing the ball all the time. And but, but they still were able to do it until the end. And it's not because they didn't have enough variety. I mean, We saw two teeth. The take is that well, They should have caught Jerry Hughes in Mario Addison, who had a stack fumble today, and Jerry Hughes is your best defensive lineman..

"But I will tell you this. If Greg Russo looks like he did in training camp and preseason, I don't want them rotated Greg Russo on the field as much as possible sale. I look at the other side Pittsburgh We were talking a little bit about the game plan. We saw Dallas run on Thursday night, where they decided to basically go after the only weakness. I think if you look at Tampa Bay's defense, then Sean Murphy bunting getting injured, they challenge their depth right away at corner. I said this, Jeremy. I know Joe Hayden. He is on the last 18 19 games of his career. There's not a ton left in the tank for Joe Haden. Who is behind him like they got rid of Steven Nelson. They got rid of their other Mike Hilton, like they don't have at least my knowledge, a group of corners that I believe can keep up with this group of bills receivers, especially if they're going to be rotating them in and out there going to be fresh throughout this game and the different packages that Brian Tables give me right if they get for receiver sets out there today. That. I mean, that is advantage bills all day. So would you like me to tell you who's listed on their depth chart behind us? This would be this would be an enlightening experience for me, and I think many listeners and viewers on stream yard Okay, so they have Justin Lane cornerback. Do you know much about Justin Lane? No, I know that that sounds like a name. That's real, all right, And they also have on the opposite side. James Pierre like these are the backups to starter Cameron Sutton and starter Joe Hayden. All right, um, in the secondary, look, make a Fitzpatrick is awesome. All pro natural Adams. Obviously we know who he is, but you know who's behind them at safety, A rookie a rookie named Let me get his first name here. Make sure Trey Norwood trainer was a rookie safety. So They? They have some questions some questions at depth in the secondary and I agree with you. I don't think Joe Haden is quite the level of player he was when he was going to Pro Bowls. He's is he lost that team. Supposing, number one is that well? Well, the heat Their defensive, according to Butler was asked about that this week and he said, I'm not going to tell you what we're going to do, but we will have a plan for Stefan Diggs. They better. I mean, not many teams didn't Yeah, no, That's the thing they did have plans first founded the next wouldn't work out. 80305 50. You can join us. You know, we talk about the Steelers Najee Harris. The Bills run game is Devin Singletary going to showcase? What's different about his body is what everyone has said is different about people. People have a lot to say about the changes he made. And he talked about, you know, in the off season having goals, the team asked him to do some things as trainer. They're watching this film all this like, will we see Singletary? Get off a little bit with that today. I like to point out Brian Devil's schemes up very favorable looks for Singletary and has his entire career so I know the looks Are there at the lion has to do its part, and then from there, it's on the backs. It's something that I think it's not a weakness of the team. It's a place they could Get a little bit more of an edge more from the backs. The Singletary lead the way with that this year. I think initially he does. You know last night we all do these these radio spots around the country. I'm on Sirius NFL radio late last night, And they specifically asked for a fantasy purpose. Question. The same question. Fantasy purposes, Devin Singletary see the guy. My answer to them was the same thing. I'm going to say everybody right now, which is I think Devin Singletary is the lead back. So to speak. Now, I think there's separation. I think Zack Moss lack of availability..

"They really only have they have one weak spot which I would call a true like weakness. And then one spot that I think is a concern or a question. But let's start with the good stuff about buffalo. There are quarterback Josh Allen is amazing. He's the if not the best young quarterback in the NFL, he's definitely one of the best young quarterbacks in fact easily the best quarterback in his division, the AFC east. He could win the NFL MVP this year. He got a big extension well deserved. He is incredible. I love watching Josh Allen play football. They also talking about quarterbacks. They added a backup quarterback Mitchell trubisky to the bears. The bill's roster, he left the Chicago Bears to come to the bills. I like trubisky as a backup. I always was hard on drew whisky. I would not build my franchise around him. But if Josh Allen gets hurt for a game or two, trubisky's a guy who's played in a lot of games, he's one games he has a similar skill set. Albeit not as effective as Josh Allen. He can run around and keep plays alive, so I think trubisky is literally like the perfect backup in Buffalo. Wide receivers and buffalo they have Stefon Diggs a star had a huge impact last year made them way way better, cool Beasley's really good, catches a lot of passes. They also added former saints receiver a manual Sanders. I like this buffalo receiving core. I like to build running backs. They have Devin Singletary, Zach moss, Matt breeda, really, really great. I think Devin Singletary is an example of, man, the Giants did the wrong thing by drafting sake on Barkley number two overall. I will say this till I die. Do not draft a running back in the top 5. It's not worth it. You can get too much value later in the draft. And you look at this Buffalo Bills running back core, Devin Singletary Zach moss matrix. None of them are top 5 picks and they're gonna be really effective and really good all year. Now on defense you've got a great secondary buffalo. Sure devious white at corner is a guy that quarterbacks will avoid. He's a shutdown corner. He's fantastic. You got two good safeties, joid employer and Micah Hyde. Now I mentioned that buffalo had a weakness. Here it is. Levi Wallace is the we'll call him the other corner, right? He's not at the corner not named her Davies white is the other corner. The number two corner. Still a starter, but not as good. And that is the guy that opposing quarterback actually gonna attack and go after. If I'm the quarterback, I'm like, I'm not throwing the ball to davious white side. But it seemed like Arizona who's got multiple receivers, Tennessee and other team like that where Davis white can't just line up on the best receiver. They're gonna need help from the other guy and any team at multiple receivers is gonna attack Levi Wallace all day with their second best guy. And I think that's a weakness on this football team. Now linebacker remained Edmonds is amazing. The defensive line is another, I don't know that they're a weakness. I said, you know, once a week and this Levi Wallace is a weakness, the defensive line.

"Around the same rate as last season. I'll go. I'll go over around interceptions. I'll say it's going to be close. I might only pick him for like 12 there, but I'll go over on interceptions. So Josh Allen has rushed for at least eight touchdowns. I think in each of his first three seasons in the NFL, is that correct? Nine and eight? Yep. His over under his eight for rushing touchdowns this year. Where do you go in there? Right on the line there. I want to. I want to say no to that one couldn't couldn't the bills do that? Couldn't they go? We just paid him $250 million. We need to run him at the five yard line to be able to win this division or to be the one seed or do they say we paid him that much money because he's the best goal line back. We have he could, and we were not because but we can use. We need to use them. I think that is more likely. Which is why I think I'd go with the extra game. I'd go over. I find it interesting that the over under number necessarily. But Devin Singletary over under Rushing yards is actually under Zach Mosses. Zax is 600 a half Devin Singletary is is 5 25.5. I find that interesting, not the actual number Joe that Moss is listed ahead of Singletary here. I think a lot of that is looking at last year's snap count. Once Moss came back, he out snap Singletary and maybe The last five. I don't remember off hand like five of the last six. Maybe when, except for a game, Moss fumbled. Singletary, I think is going to get an opportunity to do this right away. But I I believe that the Bills showed their hand a little bit last year when they were playing Zack Moss more than Singletary. But to me, it's a one a one B situation to where I don't have a great idea of who would lead in Russian years between the two and I would put their lines almost identical. Interesting, though. Zach, Um Devin Singletary last year had 6 87 is over under this year, but online at a G is, uh, 5 25. That is a lot less in one more exact Mosses is way higher. He had 4 81 last year at 600 a half this year. So I also I don't Can moss stay healthy? I don't know. That's a good question. I would go under that. Yeah, I would go under. Even even Allen's taking away yards from these guys, right? I mean, Yeah, right. How do they use breed of this year? He could be taking some yards. Away from these guys. Um Stefon Diggs led the NFL and receptions last year. How many did he have? He had 127 is over under this year's 10 9.5. Over over over the tough number two gets too Don't see. I don't see much regression at all in this passing offense over one Oh, nine. Definitely his yards last year were 15 35 an amazing year 12 99. Is the over under over over. I think they match their stats, at least from last year, and that's with an extra game. All right, And let's just do a defensive, one true, devious white total interceptions for this year. He did not have a lot last year, right? I mean, he you see, what do you have last year? Total interceptions for true devious white. Last year, he had three. I mean, so it's over unders 2.5. I'll go. I'll go over. I think he And teams are gonna have to throw to keep up with the bills, and he had six the year.

"I've got to get another linebacker out there more often than not, because first and foremost. I still need to stop. Sorry. I still need to stop the bills passing game. First and foremost, I would not say Well, you know, Singletary in mosque. They're having a good day. I'll tell you what, Let me get the DB off will put a linebacker on. We had to stop the running game. Great. Then Allen's going to just crush you sure. How do you cover the rent The You know, the digs is in the Beasley's and the Sanders and Davis is if you're gonna throw another linebacker out, so I wouldn't If I were defensive coordinator, I think you still have to dope, do everything in your power to deal with their passing game. If the trying to think it's almost like All of a sudden, the Kansas City the regular season game plan against Kansas City popped into my head. You're not beating us in your passing game, You're not throwing over the top. So we'll let you run the ball Now. The problem is they ran for, like 230 yards like that. I guess maybe you know if it got to that point, you might say as a defensive coordinator. Okay. Hey, look, the game plan of stopping the past and letting them run the ball. Mm, not working as effectively. I just don't think that happens. I would definitely be more concerned about stopping the past, then. Worried about how many guys I got in the box and what to do about the bills running because I don't think the bills running game is going to obliterate anybody this season. No, I really I think what it just comes down to is How a more efficient run game could lead to more success in the passing game. I think that's the way to look at it right. Like I think it's less about Hey, you know, Devin Singletary just broke off five. You know really nice long runs in this game. Let's turn this game over to him and start and start running the football more, but no, it's If Devin Singletary can break off five runs in a game, think about what that's going to change about the defense. And I think that's that's kind of how I've been looking at it. Which is what you're just giving the defense another something else. They've got to try and figure out how to how to correct how to handle how to prepare for and just generally. Those types of things that that Concern or want to focus on the team's ability to run should create better mismatches in the passing game, and that's for me anything that the bills can do to create into Don't want them to overthink it. And I don't think Brian David will do this. But evolving as an offense is always important. If you don't want to stay the same year to year because there's just too much film. There's too many guys getting paid. We have ticktock stars figuring out you know Ben Roethlisberger ticks, you know. So for the love of God, if we've got if we got kids on tick tock, figuring out cues on quarterbacks. Think about the other stuff that that that guys that get paid to watch film are figuring out in a in an offseason where all you have is in the middle of July watching film lots of time. Lots. That's all they've got is time 80305 50 to join us. We'll get connected with our fans brought you by band Shinnick and King, a full service Buffalo law firm. Craig, You're on w g R go right ahead, Born and guys more good topic. I wanted to comment. I I want you, Howard. I don't want the bills to go. I like the fact that they passed a lot. I think you know that was your success. But where I do agree with the idea of running the ball is making it better and more effective. And I think the Kansas City game you know you're up nine. Nothing Add you had the opportunity if you could have a little bit more effective running the football. Maybe you don't score per se. But if you're getting more sustained drives, move the ball downfield. Run some clock, which allows routine fronts for us a little bit more. It makes you a little bit more versatile and also just talk to. You know Kansas City. You got to score points, but you also need to just keep them to hack off the field to so it's a little bit of both. You know, In the end, if you're going to be if you're still going to need to put up 28 30, you're still getting past the ball well, but I don't think it's a bad thing if they can just be a little bit more effective to have that in the are sold, so that way they can't you know, they're not just putting us every down to try to hit out. So I I I like to make that they're thinking of that. I just hope they keep it within Greece at the same point. Yeah, I don't and Craig. Thanks. I feel like any time. Any time we have to see this discussion about the running game, I feel like maybe we should always point out I'm not expecting him to run the ball more. I don't think the bills were saying we need to have more balance in our offense. I don't think they're saying, Hey, Brian. Dabble. Call more running play. Yeah. You don't want to take the ball out of the hands of your quarterback. I mean, not his running portion, but his passing portion That's the strength. You don't so I I do think it is about when we run. Let's be more effective. Let's have Devin Singletary have you know he could still have five runs as opposed to 12 runs. But can those five B for 10 plus yards? Most of them are as opposed to Two yards here four yards here. An eight yard run here. Yeah, I think so. Remember that I don't think this has anything to do what they want to run the ball more spring. It's about doing a better job at it. And you know what? Nate? Remember to The offensive line. I'll throw us in here real quick. The offensive line. We tend when we talk about a line being together and continuity more often than not, we're going to say the effect it has in pass protection, right but sure what it's worth. Their offensive line. The five guys they thought were the best guys to put together. Just weren't together less for a number of reasons. And maybe that affects the running game. That's why I don't think they made like a rational decisions by going out. And, you know, signing going after Joe to me, you know, like things like that like that, they they didn't They didn't You know, panic. They brought the entire offensive line back from last year They went out and they added a different speed dynamic with Matt Burrito coming out of the backfield, so they didn't listen if they really were concerned. That They simply I I guess this this is this is the funny catch 22..

It is a talent upgrade at least for the chargers. This i sure all right well so there's hope let's let's talk about jobs scalia's report on from once again the athletic you. We're minding that website. Pretty hard for the show. Scalia's said that has act. Moss could take over the back in two twenty twenty one if he continues to improve now. This is key because these aren't your father's bills. This is josh allen jr. The fon digs like big time. Playmakers on this offense. And it's it's gonna put up points again last year. Now if he is the taking over the backfield you probably looking at two thirds. Maybe seventy percent of of all the touch touches there. At least the snaps. He's going in the ninth tenth round. Which is if that's the case. Dude he is gonna fly up draft boards at least six or seven rounds. Moss was a third round. Pick last year out of vanderbilt. If i remember correctly the scheduler says his receiving skills are underrated. He says he's the best runner they have between the tackles and as a punishing running style that maximized attempts. He is the bills. Preferred goal line back as well last year he had turf toe never really got going on when he did fumbling the football and devin singletary sort of got a another shot at being the the bell. Cow there singletary did almost nothing with it so the bills while they have the opportunity there. Bryce i'd they have the talent. Are you on board with zack. Moss in the ninth or tenth round based on this report from their beat writer. Where's devin singletary going That's a great question. And i'm going to look that up right now. Devin singletary also mojo raw running back at the end of the eleventh round. So basically and moss is growing four singletary. Yes zack moss. Running back thirty eight at the ninety four and that seems like a mistake. I mean keep in mind this like so. He was hurt last year right. Single was not single. Terry just didn't perform and they already had singletary on the roster of when they drafted zack moss in the third row. So i think if you read the tea leaves here. The the bump up in rounds for moss over singletary probably due to what the front office and the coaches think of both those players to are we saying that he didn't perform a twenty seven hundred yards. Like i mean only two touchdowns but seven hundred but think about this. Think about the offense that he was in and think about what a lead back out. Should i suppose so. And and the bills added matt brita to there to. Dad is an interesting guy because you have to catch passes and the way..

I think that out of all of you guys drafted in that range, you have to assume that he has the highest likelihood of taking over the back field and For me. I would be comfortable taking him as my second or third running back off the board because I think the potential for volume is there. Is Kate Madueke earlier this afternoon with Sneaky Jolie fantasy. What do you What do you suppose? Is the lay of the land there? They didn't draft Travis et end. Something that I advocated for. Didn't even have the chance to do it as he got picked a few pics before the bills were able to pick at 30th. So they're running it back with Matt Brita Added to the mix. Like what? What do you What do you think Running back will end up looking like I still think it's going to be mostly, you know, Singletary in Boston, if you want to say one a one b. I'm not really sure. I can't see Zach Masters taking over Devin Singletary. But I do know that as the season went on last year kind of was going in that direction. It seemed like it. I don't think it's either way though. It's it's kind of minimal. They're not going to be this run Heavy team as Brian Table said, You know, when he last spoke with us during OTAs. He doesn't have. It's not like they need to run the ball more necessarily. Just have to be able to do it well when you need to be able to do it, and I do think that's their mantra. I don't think he's lying in any regard, although I know that Brandon Beane has said, you know they wanted to improve. He didn't lay it at the feet of the running backs and or into the offensive line. It's just a lot of things that go into it, so I think it'll be running back by committee. They'll use certain guys in certain situations and then as they will even admit it to like. Sometimes it's a hot hand now as far as Brita I think he's more of Want to guard against calling the gadget player Bulldog, but I think there will be certain packages in situations they will specifically have designed for him in every game plan. Okay, Interesting. He is. He is the speed element, right? I mean, that's what we're talking about with him. That's that's his His chief trait. Is that the wheels so you know that was something that I talked about right after the bills lost to the Chiefs was increasing the speed. We'll see how much Brita ends up impacting that, because outside of him And the sixth round receiver they picked. Um there really is not any any import of speed on this offense, right? Um, that's right. I mean, Emmanuel Sanders is not that said even a downgrade from speed If you wanna go from John Brown to Emmanuel Sanders, but they that's right now, Gabriel Davis has better speed than people think. And maybe he's on the field more so that would help you. Right, but but he's not. He's not a top end burner, but he can definitely get behind the defense. Probably better than people realize because of his size. Um yeah, that's right. Stevenson is really the only as you put it. Import of speed, and that came as a later round pick in the draft and To be honest with you like I'd put the chances less than 50 50. He's even under the GameDay roster, the active roster at the end of camp, I see it more as a practice squad player who could probably clear waivers and get a redshirt year. Right. So, um, of course, Allen is in the center of all of this, however much better they want to run the ball. I don't think anyone really is stumping for them to run the ball more often, like you're alluding to, like, just want to be more effective when they do it, And that's because Alan, it was so good last year, and that's that's really how this offense made their bones. Um, on Ellen, but the contract extension we started here back at three o'clock, and I've been meaning to revisit. This conversation, because I It's a conversation that I like. It's one that I think about, Um I don't want to overdo it, but it it pops into my head. Just the dynamic changing Josh Allen with the fans and just once he has, I guess for lack of a better way to put it the pressure of the big contract right? Like you know, from years and years of following sports sale and of course, now in your job covering sports. That as soon as a player starts getting paid when when it doesn't go well, even for a game or whatever right you do get why I'm paying How much for that, like it's a very natural. This is not I'm not accusing fans are being unfair about it. I mean, it's just the reality is it changes the equation? When a guy goes from Making, you know his rookie contract, which is still of course, like, you know, life changing money to you and me but goes from, you know, rookie deal to second highest paid quarterback in the league say which is you know what I might guess Alan becomes. I wouldn't predict that he gets paid more per year than Patrick Mahomes. But I wouldn't be surprised if he slots in right behind him with the kind of year he had last year. If they do this contract, I expect that right. Okay, that changes things. Um, and the the amount of like pressure and expectation. If you go from being like, sort of plucky, underdog guy who's shutting up the critics to Oh, I guess you better just be ready to carry this franchise on your back every year now, and that is just decidedly inarguably a very different dynamic than what Alan Has experienced this point in his career, right? I do that. I do that as a fan, much less as someone covering a team. I do it with Giancarlo Stanton, as you know, right? I I didn't like the deal when it happened, and I'm like every time the guy is up in a big situation, I'm like, Dude, you're getting paid this money. You're supposed to be this guy who is in the middle of this order who is supposed to deliver and he doesn't and that comes with that. If Geo or shell is up there in that situation, I'm not as heard on him because he's g or shell. And he's not making that kind of money. When you have When you have that contract. Those are the expectations that come along with it and Yes, Josh Allen is going to go from it's going to go in a different conversation. Not only with bills fans, but I think around the country, of course, right. I mean, football analysts, NFL people fans. When fans see that contract non bills fans, I'm saying when media see that contract he gets paid. Suddenly he's going to be talked about as hey, You know, this is a guy now who's expected to compete for championships every year. They are paying him as a Super Bowl winning MVP type of quarterback. Right? How what kind of feel if at all do you have for Josh Allen being equipped to handle that. I think he's very equipped. I think he's well grounded. Um, I think Josh has had really to work for everything he's had. Um, I think he's really, really handled that criticism that we've talked about so often. Great, You know, I mean, like people, some some don't. Um, you know, they let that get to and they let that bother them. I think he hears it. I think he knows it..

"This point. Let's go to Mike and tunnel land on our discussion this morning might go right ahead. Hey, I was just wondering if Buffalo does try to move up for ET en. Do you think Singletary could be? Ah, Involved in the trade to move up. I don't think you'd be involved in the trade to move up. I think you'd be giving up. I assume you would give up draft capital. I mean, Depends. I guess also who you're moving up to get you on a 22, Tennessee. They don't need a running back, so I think it would depend on the team. But my guess is it's more likely draft capital. But what Jeremy and I were saying Mike is if they do trade up You get a running back? You would think one of Moss or Singletary would be traded because you got this guy. You got the other guy and you got breathing so there wouldn't you wouldn't need to keep everybody around. Exactly, But it depends. And as part of a deal to help get up, it would depend on what team you're talking to, you know, and I don't have no Tennessee's a 22. I just didn't I don't stop my head of camera crews at 21 2019. If a team needs a back then you could package a pick and you have running back. But you know what I like as a as a move in the bills did this in the Cordy Glenn trade? What if the what if the entire offer was Devin Singletary to move up? Oh, because the whole share Fine. I would. You're the Jaguars like where we had dropped nine spots and add an NFL player here doing I'm not sure that that he has that kind of value with the Bills traded Cordy Glenn, a left tackle. Who was good for them for a while to move from 23 to 12 A. Here's a player if we could just sweep swap spots if the bills were going to trade up to 23 The cost was Zach Moss instead of draft capital. How would you feel about it? We find with it. You feel better, Son? Of course I would You swap it out back for a back basic. What? Everybody feel better about it. If that were the cause. I can't speak for everybody on. Of course I try. I know. I just want to give up draft capital. If that's the deal, a running back for a running back. Fine. I would make that absolutely to move from 30 to 25. Yeah, sure. Years Zach Moss. Yes, because the bills would be in theory. You'd be upgrading at that position, and it didn't cost you a draft pick. I think you'd be more likely The bills would part with Singletary, though I would, too. I think they would keep more silver Singletary, too, But he's honestly either guy like I would have Don't think that would be the trade. But whatever. If that's it, you could take either guy and I'll be fine because I think you're getting a running back Who is going to be a bigger weapon in your offense and the two guys you have right now, and I'm not giving up a third round pick to move up to get him. Great. I mean, when you are the team that makes that move. What did you give up for? You know Devon Singletary and dropping how many's spine? I didn't give up anything. I got to slide nine spots from Jacksonville. It's on the pick. That wasn't even theirs to begin with. And you get what two years He's got two years left right on his contract for the U. F. So you get a couple years out of it, too. Just worth thinking about eight on three. Oh, five fits. Listen, That's not a dumb idea. No, I mean I would try it. A lot of people are saying that's not dumb. Oh, you're funny. No, I I know you didn't realize you were going for the humor thing, but no. If you could do that, if they really truly covered et en And they can get a deal where they give up one of their backs for him and no draft capital. Would sign off on the deal. Sure, absolutely. I think that would be marvelous. I want to keep all my picks. Um Jeez, Adolf. Sorry. It's like seven. Oh 38 all three old 5 50 to join us Patriots hot taking the Patriots draft. We get back because it's very interesting..

"A narrow fantasy team we talked about. Those seems all the time. I love talking about the ravens on last year's podcast. Because i didn't say anything all i had to say. It's the same stuff every week. You play lamar jackson. You play mark ingram. maybe you dabble in j. a. gus edwards last year. Maybe you do that. You play mark andrews and he played hollywood brown. And that's it. They have kind of become that team again. Once they deactivated mark ingram. Everything seemed to come into focus for them they have they have executed plan better. They focused on the moors. Legs a little bit more. You know. I read an article as jeff Forgive mispronouncing his name's rempac who covers the ravens for the athletic wrote a big article heading into last week's game about what has happened with this With this offense and what the article said was the ravens went into twenty twenty with the express. Focus of opening up the passing game with lamar jackson whether that was a mistake at all whether it was the pandemic shortened offseason those concepts they kinda stubbornly stop to for basically the first two or three months of the season and when it was looking like the lamar wasn't playing. Well he wasn't. He was not playing well and the ravens were looking like a team. That was either not gonna make the playoffs. There was going to be a very easy out in the playoffs. You looked at all that they decided. Let's just go back to. What works they bench. Mark ingram. they put the focus back on the mark jackson's legs and everything has fallen into place. This is how the baltimore ravens need to play. Lamar jackson going to be popular for. Bfs jk dobbins is going to be popular for deaths. Gus edwards is somebody. I think you can. You can pop in their understanding. He's going to need a touchdown for you. A hollywood brown is going to be popular for at best mark. Andrews is going to be popular the other problem though with them is creating some diversity with their lineup is very difficult because if you look at the stats from last week the Markings brown mark. Andrews had fifteen targets of lamar jackson's twenty four pass attempts the next highest player on the team in targets with patrick. Ricard the fullback so there is no secondary receiver here where you could be like. Well you know. I'm gonna take a shot. If there was one it would probably be miles boykin for me. He was the intended receiver on that deep. All that lamar jackson through the interception on but this is somebody who is a wing and a prayer the baltimore. Ravens are going to be popular but they're also going to be cia. Will there be chalky. But it's hard to create some diversity if you like the ravens in this game for the bills. They liked to chuck it zack. Moss is out joe. So that'll make devin singletary pretty popular even though they don't really run the football. I would anticipate zack. Moss algae that devin singletary is going to at least get ten carries. But this is josh allen. It's stefan digs. Gabriel davis is somebody who was making some place. It was good to see cole beasley out there so this is going to be obviously the match of the weekend..
