"The Detroit Tigers Radio network. See Mayes has elite Jose Altuve at the plate. First pitch fastball for a strike Jim to me so far, this first trip to the the order. It's It's all about the fastball, location, location. Yeah, it's been fair to the different speeds and from 92 to 95 with the different speeds. In out up down. Swinging the line drives softly charging scoop in the in between hop Zach Short guns it over to scope a strike. It would be fun to see again. A. J. Hinch said. Yeah, He's the 27th man. Today we will see whether Zach short stage but it would be fun to see him over the course of I don't know a couple of weeks because his actions are so good at shortstop, and it just changes the field on that infield. When you have that guy because you're has been unsure the surest opposition bit of tough thing for the Tigers. Again. You have to be strong up the middle, especially against while starting here with Houston. Michael Brantly at the plate first pitch, He snaps off the knuckle curved in steel strike one, but that's about it. I mean, come on. Now, That is pretty good. Back to back singles out to be madly in the first inning. And Mayes struck out Gourriel Alvarez got Corey on a soft, little tamper. He feels that his position well on that one. That was not an easy play fastball up and in soft pepper doesn't make it a space hit. He was heading toward third. He got off the mound quickly. This is this field drains very well. But let's face it. It's a soggy day, boy been something but 11 swinging a ground ball into the shift, charging from the outfield, classic grass s operettas checks His footing is he Releases that one. He gets Brantley easily at first, but you could tell. He found a little sauce spot as he planted and through good splitter that time by boy down. Hit her like that with the easy ground ball trip. Terrific pitch..

"System of the Detroit Tigers really wrap up the home stand the three game series against the Yankees, couple of wins and the first two games of 61 win yesterday. AJ and it seems like this whole game has hinged on that second in England. We will walk three been so good. With the strike Throwing this year Walk three got out of it with just one run. His teammates pick him up with a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning and hold the lease arrest the way that was the inning because of the just changes the complexion of the game. If they jump out to a bigger lead, Not that we can't come back. We've done that before, but it It puts a lot more pressure on us and might even change my usage of the pitching, and but he settled in got the double play. We go from Noah. Nobody out and the bases loaded, too, in the dugout with one run scored that somehow felt like a wind that felt like a like a huge boost for us. We come back and get a couple of runs and make it take control of the game and make it our game. And then Turnbull ended up kind of cleaning up his delivery and making sure he could locate his pitches and And cruise into the six. He really didn't run into a ton of trouble until the six and then he was out of the game uses no to get the final out of the sixth inning. That was it for him for the day. Is that often the key moment in the game for you? And how do you You just talked about some of the decision making that goes on when you're trying to get those two outs to get to the seventh inning to set up your bullpen for the anything. Yeah, it's really easy to fall into the trap of using middle relievers in middle relief, and what I've learned over the years is the high leverage point can happen at any point of the game. Specifically in that 5th 6th 7th inning where you know to get a big key out of you target the right guy and you get the right guy up and you come in and you get out of it. It kept the game at 6 to 1 instead of Using maybe a middle reliever who might be less of a of a matchup for you, and but it's more comfortable to save your premium relievers for the back end of the game. That game was one when we when we shut that rally down in the sixth inning, says narrow comes in. He strikes out Gary Sanchez. That otherwise they can pick away and it can be 62 63 6 to 4 and all of a sudden I'm using says narrow anyway in the seventh or eighth inning to get to the finish line, So I I've learned to use the leverage relievers in leverage. I think that some kind of a modern way of using your bullpen. We've trained our pictures to be able to do that and be alert and be aware and know where the targeted guys are. Communication's been good and the players have stepped up, and it is something that it does take a little change of the mindset For some guys, the high leverage guys t learn kind of how you want to use it. Sure, it's changed over the years. I mean not to date back to the playing days. But when You know, you used to have 1/7 inning guy and an eighth inning guy and ninth inning guy, and everybody knows their role. What we've learned over the time and what analytics has shown us and matchups have shown us is that You know you want to use your pictures to against the best players that they can. They can face the velocity and in a slider and the change up to Gary Sanchez, all all are effective, says there has got all three of those is a plus pitch. So I you know, I've changed a little bit of my managing style over the 10 years. I've done it just to accommodate kind of the modern way of using your pictures. You have to start that in the spring and in the communication with the pictures that were they They don't get walled into thinking that they have to have a specific inning for them to be used, but more so a specific area of the batting order and it's it's worth reviewing. I know you've talked about this, but I think it's it's new for Tigers fans that you're always communicating Syria's two syriza about. You know whether this lineup is left, he loaded or writing loaded, and so they know, going into each series. How they might be used for sure you try to give them pockets in which they're gonna They're gonna be used, especially when you have a guy. Told his narrow before the Syriza. We're going to get a great matchup against Gary Sanchez. At some point now, I don't know that that's gonna happen, but I predicting that if that's what comes up I've done my homework or coaching staff had done the homework and we saw this as a plus advantage for us. So I bring him in here the other day yesterday with Gary Sanchez up to bat, and we're going to test that theory on that homework that I did, But you know if you can communicate that to them than their thinking along the game and as that innings developing in the phone rings You want to develop the culture works his narrows already getting up because Smoke,.

"Now i'm going to go with. The rams to rams are team. That i think would matt stafford. You have a quarterback than now is taking your team to the next step. You have no first round picks. But you have a quarterback that's going to elevate your team to the next level and he feels now. I can win here he. I'm sure when he was in detroit he did not feel. This teams may first super bowl run. There was yeah. They made the playoffs and then loss like they didn't do anything in. The playoffs. never won a playoff game. so i'm matthew stafford. There's some energy coming from me. Because i know i'm in position now where i can make the playoffs and do something something the rams and there because i know the rams are good defensively. I got good weapons on offense. I know mast african. Go and sling the rock. So i'm gonna put them in there. And if i had to pick one more team i guess i'll say seattle they did address the offensive line. They did make sure that the offensive line of the half improved. Your core back. Needs help protecting him. They address it. They did sign somebody. I'm sure they're going to draft somebody as well so make sure you keep them protected he's your franchise. He's your guy. He's been there or through thick and thin. He's done a lot for you. Don't mess up the relationship you have. You got a quarterback. Keep them happy. It's that simple now. Not putting the san francisco in there just yet. Because i don't know what they're doing a quarterback they trade up to number three. Because the only do that when. You're drafting a quarterback. I'm sorry you don't do that. A less no no. It's a quarterback like they are getting a quarterback. And i don't know i don't understand why i believe jimmy garoppolo when he's playing their winning the stats. Show it. When he's not they suck stats. Show it so the san francisco forty natsume that there are tired of him. They're done they want to move on fine. Go get a quarterback like justin fields are matt jones. I don't understand the high mack. Jones right now i just. I still don't understand it but go get him and see what happens. Blows my locks. San francisco is not a lot for me. Data Shows MLB Teams that Sell the Most Hot Dogs Win the Most Games
"Secret to why Major League baseball teams are summer successful and some flat out stink. It has to do with the sale of hot dogs. Really? Yeah, you This is your cause and effect their national hot dog. Soc Sausage council has put out data. The L, a Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and ST Louis Cardinals each S o more than a million hot dogs and sausage each year, and they're the most successful major league baseball teams. Now listen to the bottom five teams that so the least amount of, huh? The Detroit Tigers. The Cincinnati Reds, the San Diego Padres, the Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles. Kidding awhile, That's that's rough on,
MLB Spring training: A Look At the Detroit Tigers
"Innovative and all that I do think there's a chance of the Tigers offense could be better than people expect. And certainly the pitching staff could get to that point as well with all the young arms that they have. The problem is, I think they're very clearly the fifth place team in that division, so a lot of teams will take liberties with them will take advantage of them and also to keep in mind as you're watching spring training as you're kind of looking at these stats and the numbers and all of that. They're using a different baseball right now, then they will be using during the regular season and I don't know why Major League Baseball has not supplied those baseballs to the pictures for everyone to get used to them, but You know, we're also going to see Cold Weather games, which we didn't see last year early on in the season, so I think everybody offensively will be in for a rude awakening and the Tigers, probably to a higher degree. All right, So let me ask you, how does it happen when you have a Tiger's team and McGee Cabrera is still there, But when you have guys, I mean that line if they had just just a few years back Was like, ridiculous and you're going like this team. You know, they just need to, you know, sort of, and Verlander is still there And then all of a sudden now you look at that lineup and you look at the depth chart You like. Who are these guys? And they look, I know there's young prospects was always prospects, You know, cause you're trading away and you're dumping salary. I mean, Look, the Yankees are paying that luxury tax every year. I mean, they're going to make sure that they have their guys. It's It's tough for me to look at the Detroit franchise to where, you know. Pause. The mascot, maybe the best hitter on the team. It's one of those things where Mike Village in the Tigers were close, and Ellis was getting older. He knew this health was starting to fail all that he was going to stop at nothing to try and win a World Series with that team. And he had the right GM to do it. And Dave Dombrowski, whose very happy to spend a lot of the owner's money and then go somewhere else, So that was kind of the situation that happened there in Detroit was Village spent and spent and spent to try and get that world. Syria's before he passed away and it didn't happen. And then when his son took over the team, it was okay. We've got some really bad contracts that we need to unload. We either have to, you know, hope that we can jump in a time machine and fast forward things or make trades like the Verlander trade. You know, like getting rid of J. D. Martinez. Some of these guys that were very high priced players that were probably starting to reach the aging curve, starting to reach that point where they were going to start to decline a little bit faster. So that's just kind of what happened with the Tigers. And you know al Avila, whose the GM now came out and basically said, Look, We're not spending any money this year because we shouldn't we don't need to. We're planning our next year, so the Tigers probably will get that payroll back up. But hopefully it's it's smarter spending than

"Is a manager that when he was in the Houston Astros. And again, this was a, had pretty much put it was like he tried to stop the situation. He tried to stop the Astros the players from actually doing something from he tried to smash them in the monitors that they were using saying stop cut it out. And I get it. He's even send it to all I wish I could have done more. I wish I could have done more and I'm sure he does and I know we all probably wish we could have done more in situation. But you just gotta take a step back and look at this people and people were bashing me on social media saying well, he was a manager so he can't control men. It's easy to couldn't tell kids. It's my remain responses. Like it's easy to tell kids to not take their noses and it's not really easy for an adult to tell a adult men to not use something to pad their stats to make them more money down to win a World Series like you realize I get bonuses and stuff for winning these titles right for hitting certain stats, right like you realized that so when they hit these numbers, oh, well you they thought he should have been just the players. Okay, so he would have been just the whole team like you guys don't get that. Do you like people understand again? I'm not advocating saying all we should high heat is I'm saying that listen he was put in a bad situation that I can promise you so many people in that guy's situation even current managers in baseball would have done and have had to gone through the same thing a lot of them not every one of them but a lot of them Would have had to go through hey, you know, we had to bring like we had to deal with I tried to stop it and it wouldn't work. So now I have to deal with it. It's like a coronavirus company knowing that somebody is doing something unethical but the companies making money from it, you know, a lot of these companies going to be like, okay. Well as long as it doesn't give found out, you know, we might as well just keep making money from home. Now. Does it make it right? Absolutely not. But if the company ain't going to do anything about like, you know, the owners knew, you know other people in the organization New Jersey. Like it was just the manager and the players like you get that right. It was other people everybody in the organization of the Astros new. Is it his job to try and stop it. Yes, but what did the Dow owner do? What did the GM do like, what did everybody do nothing? They let it go. So that's why I'm not sitting there saying the whole blame is on him. Is there blame on him? Yes, but do does he deserve another chance to coach in a team? Yeah, he does. Maybe I didn't think he would actually become the head. I just yet, you know, I thought he would probably had to like work his way from like the bench manager or I think it's what it's called the assistant. I don't know all the baseball terms for like every position. So, forgive me if I'm wrong, but we're trying to sit there and say he doesn't deserve to coach at all. So all the players don't deserve to play at all, right because if you listen to my show before Thursday, that's all I've asked for said these players need to be suspended suspended find taking away the Rings get back to title the trophy all that stuff needs to happen. None of it had happened why off because they were given immunity. Oh great. So we just gave out to me and he's so now these players suffered. The only person that really suffered was the manager. And the GM because they were both let go and oh, there's a now and Asterix on the Houston Astros world series title. I understand that the have these asterisks. Okay, I get every single thing in regards to that now granted if the tigers become the number one hitting team in baseball next year and especially at home. I'm going to have some questions. Okay. This ain't possibly what's up. I know my team. I know we're not good and we just go from bad to amazing in one year. No. No, no and then again, I love reading online the whole law. Why is he still a manager why he should have just he should have said something. He should have been just the players. He should have sent him down like you would not have done that. Just think about that if a player is playing at an elite level you are the manager anyone that wants a critique and sit there and like you be these black hole managers just take a step back. The reason why I'm saying what I'm saying is because I do believe based on the investigation and the reports that all came out from the Major League Baseball not just from AJ. Hinch or the Houston Astros from Major League Baseball. I do believe that he tried to do something. And again, yes, he could have done more but I realized that the people that liked my comment on Twitter a lot of them like actual fans like actual fans. Don't get it wrong. I'm not trying to sit there and like dead Defend Your World Series held because you guys don't deserve that. Okay, so let me just take a step back there and make sure you guys understand you guys don't deserve that ring or that title. So back off and then a lot of people that way of setting me a lot other word Dodger fans. So everyone was upset until the people that were upset were like Dodger fans. They were upset at me for the most part as you should be you guys were screwed out of a world series title and Houston Astros that light's it that like my Contour mainly a show fans, but Detroit Tiger fans, like there's one guy was going to argue with and he was saying I saw that he was from Detroit. I was there you can support in Detroit and he said not as much anymore I said, okay. Listen, I'm a Detroit Tigers fan no matter how bad we were how good we've been I'm going to be Detroit Tiger game. Through thick and thin no matter what we just have to understand that this team cannot be great. If one year next year if we become great next year like a gray a headache. I can't get I'm going to really question it but understand this Tigers fans, so you don't want him as your manager. Right? Like you said that you don't want him as your manager. When if there's anyone manager next year. It's going to be awfully under the scope of what goes on in an organization. It's going to be a j hinch. So let's just get that clear the guy he's and then people say, oh, well you did you want him controlling these men man. I just wanted someone does actually going to get us to winning legally. And I think he could do it still think he's a good manager. And he just got he was just putting in a terrible situation that he had to go along with and when you are part of an organization that has to go along with these terrible numbers that has to go along his great numbers and this Graeme winning and then everything comes out. It's like it's tough. Again, I'm not condoning what he did. I'm just saying. I know he I believe that he did try based on the report that I read about the investigation. That's why they have these investigations. Okay. That's why I should happen in the first place. But in the end, he's our manager now Tigers fans deal with it. And if you don't want to then fine chain didn't change teams for all I care off these all you had to Detroit you lost to Detroit lifelong fan of no longer fan. Like they don't care. They don't care just just realize the tiger to Detroit Tigers home page and you guys are tweeting about saying you lost those lifelong fan. They don't care fans will come and go fans would jump ship fans will do everything. I will be a fan of my team forever. I don't know how long I don't know why but I will I support my team in Detroit Tiger fans. If you don't want to support the Tigers at this point five birthday. Then don't but when we're winning don't come running around if we start winning now, I don't think we're gonna win next year but in a couple of years if we start winning do not come crawling back to the team. That's all I have to say stick with wherever you left off too. If you decide to go with no team, that doesn't mean that you go back to Detroit if you decide to go with the Indians wage doesn't mean that you go back to Detroit because we're in the same division. Like if once you leave your team, you left them you're done you don't come crawling back to us if we start winning. Okay,.
Fresh off suspension, Hinch takes over as Tigers manager
"Detroit Tigers have made it official and have hired former Houston Astros manager A. J. Hinch and signed him to a multiyear deal. Hinch 46 was flattered by the Astros after the cheating scandal. Fresh off suspension, Hinch takes over as Tigers manager
"The Detroit Tigers mentioned they are on the verge of hiring AJ hinch to be there next manager after his suspension ended after the world series ended my question for you on the hinch hiring their Detroit is. When will he get them back into the postseason? They've not been there since two thousand fourteen not had a winning season since twenty sixteen. How long? Do you think it takes Aj hinch to get them. Back to a winning record this past year they went twenty three and thirty five in the sixty game season the year before that they went forty seven in one fourteen. All right he's going to get along leash. Okay. Not only. Yeah. I now. So he's hitching closer to a contract, right? God Yes. All right He's hinges away. Aj. Chicago White Sox clinch winning season, plus current playoff field
"Turn your head because I certainly did over the past couple of days maybe I got washed up at a bit of college football, the NFL return and but I didn't realize the Chicago White Sox. We're now in first place in the American league central after going eight and two in their last ten games they are. Let's see a game up on the Minnesota twins who have figured things out and are now in second place in that. Leaves the Cleveland Indians losers of six straight all the way down to third place at twenty and twenty one and four and a half games out. So so the Indians have gone from first place in the division arguably the team to beat in the American League two. Now, a wildcard team outside of the top two in the division and four and a half games out just that quickly I mean, don't you know six in a row and when the white sox are winning four that's at least. Four Games in the last four days and with a deficit of four and a half, it's gone from a half a game to four and a half year. By the time Friday rolled around you have the Detroit Tigers at twenty and twenty six, and then the Kansas City royals at twenty and twenty eight. Neither of them are atrocious baseball teams, which honestly is a bit better than I had anticipated for both of them but neither of them are going to be infecting the playoff picture with their presence. Where do we go here? The Chicago White SOx thirty and sixteen winners of four, straight eight and two in their last ten they swept the Tigers this past weekend. Let's take a look at their scheduled down the stretch here. See who they have coming up. They have four with the Minnesota twins who I just spoke about being a game back. So this'll be a fantastic series between the white. SOX and the twins it'll be in Minnesota Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday some fantastic pitching matchups in those. Then they travel to Cincinnati to Cleveland and retell her for return home ver-. CHICAGO. So the white sox tough schedule down the stretch with clubs over five hundred and then the reds mixed in there. So we'll see if they can continue to play quality baseball they continue to be led by Jose Abreu. He's crushing the Baseball fifteen home runs. Forty eight RB is Tim Anderson is currently your Major League leader. In batting average, he'd be your batting champion at three, sixty two. If he qualifies in Thirty six games, one, hundred, fifty, two are bats I think he has just qualified fine when it comes to that statistic on the pitching side of things Lucas g Alito. Continues to pitch well, Dallas Kaikal not a lot of people talking about it but six in two two, one, nine era talk about a successful year Then you got mad foster coming out of the bullpen with a one three, one era so Chicago a well rounded team they were my surprise bic in the American league at least they got the memo because. My Cincinnati reds on the other side will get to them but they still haven't figured things out sell but hey, one or two in regards to surprise picks. So the summer I'll take that absolutely. Did I think they'd be a first place team I didn't think the white sox will be a first place team but I certainly thought they were good enough to. Make the wild card and make the playoffs. Now we're talking standard one, sixty, two, five teams but yeah, certainly a pleasant surprise on the south side of the windy city.
Jose Abreu Drives In 7 Runs, Chicago White Sox Rout Detroit Tigers 14-0
"It was quite a night for Whiteside's first baseman, Jose Briana 14. Nothing went over the Tigers last night. Ready with a pair of three run homers. He had four hits. He drove in seven runs and scored five. That combination is a first in White Sox history. Jim Anderson also had himself a forehead night in the victory. The White Sox maintaining a one game lead on the Twins for first place in the American League Central Whiteside's go for the sweep of the Tigers later on this afternoon pregame coming away at 12 35. Darrin Jackson, I will have to call it won 10 on 7 20 w G. N White Sox made three roster moves today. Purchasing the contract of today's starter Jonathan Stever, will make his major league debut. "But until then Ray Hayworth had the longest streak of of errorless. Games in Seoul. Yeah. So he was tremendous but but anyway so that this victory you know they say like this was just such a huge thing because what had happened was general crowder came in the the next day. And one, and then the Tigers beat. The Tigers beat the Yankees. For crowder start the your thing is the next day or the at least probably the next day if not the day after that but it was the very next game on crowder the Tigers in behind general crowder win the next game they moved into a tie with the Yankees for first place and again that was twenty third. Okay. So you see the evolution you're so may thirtieth fifth-placed June twentieth fourth-place. They're starting to escalate a little bit June thirtieth to July seventh ten game winning streak with Mickey Cochran. You know with that Mickey Cochrane Home Run in July twenty third VIC Sorrell in this game. The crowd of the very next day the Tigers move into a tie with the Yankees and they never looked back. They never looked back. They just kept on winning in the in they. They edged out for the for the dependent and saw the September twenty first they when they clinched the pennant that year well. How many games do they have left? September September twenty twenty I I have to look at it. Yeah. Yeah. I. Like this September. So there was like two months left. Wow and they played great the rest of the season. So that's that's early in the season AVIC cinched up. For the the the September. Twenty first, the world series was not. It's not that early well, a little bit actually because he had the world series I think it was October third. Yeah. Was the beginning of the world's actor we're I third. So it was yeah. No, it was like nine days. So at least a week but but. But they crush. The season they just were killing everybody, and in fact, they went on a losing streak at the end of the year I think it was an eight game losing streak at the end of the year. Which people were like, Oh man, are they gonNA. have are they going to be able to? Because the worst thing for them was that they went on eight-game somewhere like a seven or eight game losing streak at the end of the year. In the COBBS. Went on a twenty one game winning streak to propel themselves into the thirty five world series. So going into that world series that tighten the cubs were the hottest team in baseball in the Tigers were the coldest team. Eight games in a row so. So. It was eight maybe it's eight out of nine, but it was it was it was ugly little losing streak that they had to finish off their year but But yeah, you can see you can just kind of see the dynamic in of the season how they how they started. Now there's a couple of these really key moments probably a million other ones to, of course There's one more little element to regards to the importance we talked about on a previous show about just the you know the ball Hank Greenberg yeah and just this like the next Babe Ruth and figure in this year on. Top of the POPs with everything everything he's one of the greatest hitters of all time. He's one of the greatest of all time and we mentioned so nineteen thirty, three tight grammar just trying to get a starting job. I mean thirty three I mean. He was just trying to give me he he actually went to Frank Naven and says either play me or trade me or something because I wanna play he's playing on Belle, isle with kids on. Sandlot ball just to stay in game shape because he was never playing and so. It's thirty. Thirty, four, forty. So he wins the job really at the end of nineteen thirty three plays well enough to win the job going into thirty four and it's thirty four that he breaks out and becomes one of the great hitters all baseball, and that helps to propel the Tigers to the to the series. And then in thirty five, Greenberg is on a whole `nother level is literally on a whole `nother level. I mean he is like I'm talking about he's not just on another level for the Tigers he's on another level for all Major League Baseball. I mean just have great little fact here that I think is going to put into context just how big he was because we mentioned the Tigers were were you know start off bad in the beginning of the season but It could have been way worse without Hang Greenburg. Okay. He was the he was literally the only person like one of the only. I mean he was the catalyst that gave them. What wins they did get in the beginning. He carried them almost by himself well, through the first part of the season and. So just to give you an idea of how how, how big he was. You know the the the statistic of runs batted you know runs batted in rb is It's so by the All Star game which I duNNo. If you WANNA look up the data the All Star game 'cause I don't have the time my head but by the all star Game Hank Greenberg had hundred and ten rb is okay. Like All Star game is halfway point of the season generally. Generally speaking. So he one hundred and ten rb is by the all. Star. Game Okay it just to give you a frame of reference. Lou Gehrig what by the time, the season finished hungry Murray finished the year with one hundred seventy RBI hand Greenburg. Okay. But just to put into context, how many that is the number two player in baseball that year head was Lou Gehrig and he had one hundred and Nineteen Rbi's for the season. That was that was July eighth in one thousand, nine, hundred, eighty, five, eight, three, go. Yeah. So so anyways by July, eighth on the by the. Looking at my notes here, that's the Tigers just had that ten game wins. Yeah. By July eight Han and Greenberg got one hundred and ten RBI. Lou Gehrig for the full season.

"Okay. But anyways. Yeah. Two, three games three or four games. Here's that'll that'll swing that'll swing big time. Yeah. So anyway, so going to maybe they played a four game series, but but the idea is the last three games is what we want to talk about. Okay It's so anyways, there was a there was a double header. Okay. In the first game of the doubleheader school by role loses to the Yankees seven to five the Tigers at this moment are. Already equate to a game and a half back of the Yankees have to do the math owner, but I'll get to a more precise measurement here in a second anyways the Tigers are the first close. The titles are in second place just behind the Yankees okay. So. anyways school borough loses the first game seven to five. Okay exactly. You know the mighty schoolboy loses this this first game and then the Tigers like the way that the pitchers had been being used every day and all this stuff they literally had nobody they literally had no what it. So this is the and you have to understand this double header was you know this is key because the Tigers lose three in a row they drop down in the standings. Three, and the lose three. So propelled makes it even more difficult. So at this particular doubleheader, there was sixty six thousand fans only for this double header six thousand, which shows you sort of the magnitude send out the scientists vic. Old Vic. Aren't feeling. There's going poop themselves anyway. Hey. How you doing your arm feel and everybody's like. You want to get it started. Yeah. Like do you need you know what the plan was was just they? They needed somebody to cover. They they like he wasn't like Victor. Star he was a reliever he would just you know he was a pitcher and we needed when you could see he did really didn't have that many games pitch that year. On. You know. So you know they they need Vic Sorrell I vic Sorrell. The need to step up how does vicks and he do. We'll tell you never gonNA have some. So anyway. So, victims end, and let me just make sure I get the score. Yeah. I got the notes written on here. So it comes in and the Tigers win three to one. Vic pitches a jam. Non like one of the most important and Bass Games of his life really right and so. In. So Three pitchers in one of the one of the great stories to is Ray Hayworth who was the backup catcher he was tremendous like can we talk about? Ray? Hayworth. In fact when they were making trade when they were breaking when they were buying Mickey Cochrane the as wanted them to the Tigers of throwing Ray Hayworth part of the deal and the Tigers Refuse Nice they wouldn't even power here with railroads was a backup catcher, but he was in elite defensive player. He was a solid offense hitter, but he was elite defender in Seoul in Seoul. So he played a lot I mean Ray Hayworth wasn't allowed. So Mickey Cochrane a lot of times Mickey would you know he would because catchers take a lot of beatings? You know they take a beating all year long and. So anyways. So Mickey, which felt comfortable knowing that he could take a game off in that Ray Hayworth would would be pip. It'd be a great catcher for the game and then make us himself as a pinch hitter in in for the increasingly important moments of games to get those, he may have got to check my records, but he may have even pitch hit himself in that ninth inning game that talk about what that home run in fact I think he did was he pinch hey, brought himself off the bench because he's the manager he gets to decide when they when he uses himself when. I got this Fella's exactly. To Pinch, hit for eight. Incredibly important. So having Ray Hayworth, let them do that anyways. Ray Hayworth was was a because he ray Hayworth had been with the team as long as Vic Sorrell it had been at least the. Late twenties and so he was great friends with Vic and he mentioned in the quote at the end on their keep talking about where it's like their favorite moments that he says at the end of that of that game in the ninth inning that there is a potentially a runabout to score in the ninth inning on Vic Sorrell in that he like literally muscled the guy that. You know the guy came around third in back. Then you catcher could like football block into somebody to keep them from touching the plate and so he knew that the ball the ball is running a little bit late in that he gave this guy or the shove caught ball tagged him out in preserve the victory he's he got a black eye as a result he had a Black eye from hitting this guy so. Six foot tall hundred and eighty pounds ray Hayworth yeah. Here, with US Great. He's an ASS. He went in there. It was I again. I gotTA check the exact number but I believe it was one hundred it was at least one hundred straight games it might have been one three or something but he went like one hundred straight games without without making an air which for that's That's incredible broken. That streak was not broken until Yogi? Berra. Broke was a tremendous pitcher for the Yankees in the nineteen fifties. Until Yogi bear broke it..

"Of the season in three of the Tigers? Say That was it when Mickey hit that home run one guy says that did that home run did things to me that I haven't experienced since I was a child. That was it that with its extra innings? Pushes exploration to to win the game and they beat Mel harder who was one of the great pitchers user. One of the great pitchers in the nineteen. Thirties. So. What what? was there somebody else who was a standout? Not necessarily one of the top stars was there somebody else was a stand down next thing next point You read my car. The Kids Actually was hoping to get to this guy do because it's sort of like just. Another mentioned by these players at the end of the year was that again, the the is a great article 'cause they they ask all these different players, what was your favorite moment of the season in? So bunch of and Picky Cochran for that home run he hit in an several more picked There's a guy named Vic Sorrell okay. And this is the name of never gets any mention and he didn't get any hardly any mention in one, thousand, nine, hundred five, which is sort of the point of this player. His name is visceral. Okay. So Vic, Sorrell, he's like you know the you know. You have. When. You're talking thirty four, thirty, five tigers. You've got schoolboy roll like the picturesque athletes six, foot, four, six foot whatever he was. Great Looking. Guy Hero to the children you know ace of Eight. You know one of the as we've talked about school boy role you got Hank Greenberg. You know this guy is just setting the world on fire. He's like the next Babe Ruth tight figure for the Tigers Mickey. Cochran all these big names right. But then you got vic sorrell he's like Vic Sorrell he's he's got he wears round glasses right? He's not really doesn't really look like an athlete. You know he's kind of like a nerd man look at them when you see a picture Vic Sorrell. He you know he doesn't really take the you know he's just doesn't need us like one of these. You know these ball players that would be some kind of a cover of a magazine scientists. Say exactly he's like Tom. Bespectacled van. So, anyways Vicks ben with the Tigers since one thousand nine hundred, twenty, eight So when we talk about, you know we've said it'd be for the tires make Cochran got they're either too young or they were too old vic Sorrell was in the category a tool he'd been with the Tigers since nineteen twenty eight, he had an incredibly mediocre. Career you know nearly two wins one, hundred, one losses like, yeah. He was leading up to that point. You can see for yourself you're looking at era earn on average pitcher you anything in the three point six, three point five, three point six. That's s really good. You know what I mean gives up three and a half runs a game basically. Per Nine innings and then sold but when you're but with Vic Sorrell, you can see his era is like four or four point five five. You know like this guy. You know he's the type of pitcher that he was good enough to like eat up innings. You can put them out there. You knew we pitched nine innings sometimes you would give up three or four sometimes you would give up six or seven. Just the kind of guy that. Just. You know he's a pitcher. He's a pitcher. You know he's going to get some out whatever you know he's GonNa be out there but he is no superstardom around him at all like this guy that they put in whenever so anyways. So nine, hundred, thirty, five. Visceral like again, Tommy Bridges Schoolboy Rowe elden Oskar General crowder we talked about his this incredible magic seasonal from thirty four and then he's also great thirty five again. And then VIC soils over in the corner the other he's just he's a guy they throw in whenever they need Ella. This week. Exactly. Everything need them for something you really to pick up some innings they put vicks soil in. So. In one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty, five, you know that's the situation with Vick. You know there's all this incredible excitement on the tires and then the vix he's part of the team still he's got a baseball card off there. So but anyway, so it. But for victim this season, the sort of the sad thing about Vic Sorrell was that his daughter had this illness and I I have it in the book somewhere I'm not sure what the illness was I escapes me what what, her, what the actually but it was something that sort of carried on over the course of the season in. So he was really so he would be at. A game, and then like what he had had a day off, he would be at home trying to you know dealing with helping his daughter to be with his daughter and stuff. So he's having kind of a you know not only you know just a rough personal season as well. So anyways. So the so the date is July twenty third as we already mentioned June thirtieth June seventh tekkers on a ten game win streak and then so now we're talking July twenty third. Okay. So the tigers are just a shade behind the Yankees. Okay. They're just like they're they're. So they're going into the Yankee Stadium and they have a three game series..

"It's sort of a different Pete Fox nine, hundred, ninety five. It's a different outfielder, nineteen, thirty, five BC. Yeah. So you know this, you know there's there's other elements to like. You know we talked about schoolboy last share. Yeah I nineteen thirty, five schoolboy role was a totally different pitcher in thirty four. He was unstoppable. He was unhittable. They know what? He was the superstar of all baseball. He had this huge romance with Edna skinner we talked about but but in nineteen thirty, five, he he had married Edna skinner in the in the off season they'd had a child and in little lynnwood little boy little lynnwood and he he was sick and there's you know there's there's there's no no. It's really my speculation and I speculated in the book The the idea that that the sickness of his newborn son is what led him to his early season struggles and he struggled terribly in nineteen thirty five. Terribly we were talking about this talking about this being the great expectations and then the season kicks off. And they're struggling. Row, and the team overall. Exactly. That's so so you have scuba rose a large part of it because you know here's he's one of their You Know L. Knocker says that Tommy Bridges was the ace of the team at schoolboy himself. We're like this. You know that we were the next as we were like the secondary because because a lot of you would actually say the school by Roy was like the ace but. You're splitting hairs but but you know they the everybody was such a high regard. For Tommy, bridges that they all like he's a he was still surly young. He was twenty seven years old and nineteen, thirty four in school boy L. Knock Orion their twenty three twenty, four year old area in so but anyways but schoolboy was an incredibly important figure on that team. As a pitcher it I mean it was like you know that you had in this really had to aces overall intensive purposes with Tommy Bridges and Schoolboy Rowe two aces in with one of them bridge was okay in thirty five from the very beginning but what schoolboy role was horrible and so. The first P- got relegated to the bullpen in. The context of the bullpen. Is that is the bullpen as sort of like the the guys that come in and fill that pitch at the end of games whenever they need an ending or two or especially back in this era when the pitcher's basically pitched every game all game in the only reason they came out if they were hurt or if they were playing bad and that's when they brought in the bullpen. Yeah, it was. Kind of like a lot of times it would you know the the the games that both these really con- relievers pitch that were important. But for the Star for schoolboy. Rowe the ACO one of the great pitchers in all of baseball to be coming out of the bullpen was a tremendous indignant that just shows you how bad he was like how they could not pitch him the start the you know. It was a brief moment that they're bringing i. wasn't like he was relegated there for half the season or something it was i. think it was only a couple of games but but any. But in either case, he started off the year In, in a tough way, he was not good in. So in a there's a great article in the end of the second book that There's no way to read on here would take up the whole show. It's. Probably, a twenty minute read but but anyways were shaver actually goes through the entire season. He doesn't fantastic job of narrating the he. Calls it. The that says Cochran is the captain of the ship that rolled over these stormy seas because it because it was just up and down up and down actually have a sort of a no of the timelines idea. Yeah. So So the should've done with the data the first the first day, the season started, but it was. Just like a lot of season's early late March early, April But by May thirtieth you know a month and a half two months of the season they're in fifth place the Tigers are in fifth place. By June twentieth, the team is in fourth. She's moved up a little bit in their in fourth place. So you're talking about you know the maybe third of the season's over and they're still in fourth place in Seoul the You know the main criticism of the nineteen, thirty, four tigers because they had come out of the you know they because they had played like such worldbeaters after being so terrible virtually the same team that there are people are saying they got lucky than they tapped. Lucky they had a lot of momentum on they avoided injuries. You know there was sort of a fluke and so that was the national media narrative in Seoul the has starting off the season in such a rough spot. It seemed to vindicate all the critics I mean vindicated they're all saying yeah. This is the Tigers really were a flash in the PAN. was there appoint that was a turning point in thirty five once more of them sink man I got it right here start. Turning point. What was the turning point seventy five. So so you have So so from June thirtieth to July seventh the Tigers go on a ten game win streak that helps. but then, but this was, but I actually have A. Couple of quotes at the end of the book where they actually say the were Bud shaver. The one quote just mentioned you with a stormy seas story. He actually says the fourth of July was the turning point the fourth of July because in that game the Tigers are planning to get the predators are playing against the The Tigers have as I just mentioned June thirtieth to July seventh year on a ten game win streak. So this. Would have been there there's maybe six game in a row that they you know if you know they won ten but at this point, they really won four or five in a row. So they're playing against Cleveland Indians, they're planning Cleveland Indians and the Tigers are down to four in the ninth inning with two hour. Okay. In Mickey Cochrane comes up to the plate drills a home run to tie it. Okay. In the Tigers, go on to win in the eleventh inning. Extends that winning streak from five or six whatever was at that point seven games and then they win three more scenes so that ten game. So that's when they say that you know they could've it could've been a four game winning streak where they lost one and then the Tigers those stormy ship keeps going up and download the but the winning of that game and then the. Winning of three middle they all said in the in the even at the book, there's another quote I have where they're actually asking the Tigers what was your favorite moment of the season in three of the Tigers? Say That was it when Mickey hit that home run one guy says that did that home run did things to me that I haven't experienced since I was a child. That was it that with its extra innings? Pushes exploration to to win the game and they beat Mel harder who was one of the great pitchers user. One of the great pitchers in the nineteen. Thirties..

This fall is not currently participate in spring practice. Seventy two percent of you think that that is true. The best team in college basketball won the national championship. Sixty two percent of you think that that is true. We never even got into the the call that went off Virginia and Texas Tech. I don't really care. I was going to get into it a little bit. I didn't have much to say, I went an indifferent direction. But seventy seven percent of four hundred ninety three votes thinks that ball should have been off of Virginia in last night's game. Most interesting are noteworthy thing you've read or heard this spring from appearing capital. I think the offensive line has a chance of being high level this year. Yeah. I think that's probably I mean, again the way that they've talked about it. With four starters, come back. You know, they've asked Michael on why not to get in better shape to be someone that can have a greater stamina, and they can use more effectively in the fourth quarter. He seems to have done that the incher the offensive line is is going to be a strong as a man. I mean, probably since probably since the the pre rich ride days, you know, they're gonna feel that good about insurance offensive line. I know I've said that I would love John running inside. But they really happy with him at left tackle, they feel really good about. I mean, all big ten first team performer left tackle a year ago. So I agree with that one that they that the chance of the offense I'm being high level this year that could that could certainly be the case. The lack of running back depth chart. We need the equivalent of LeRoy hoard torn or Tony balls in jer- bunch. We we mentioned that a little bit. Yes. Lacking lacking to have that that many bodies, you know, Zach springing up walk on that could very well get the job done. But I mean, if we're talking about walk on it's goes to show you that they don't have the depth and the healthy bodies that they want right now at the running back position. She in the question. Nothing stain is far away from Michigan football as I can so kickoff or the first game the most positive thing. I've seen is Gaddis and the running backs, okay? Mike Sanders gills abilities from Aaron Roberts. No huddle speed in space as the Rick. From dave. We don't huddle we never huddle. New Gaddis was a new voice in handed the keys and all, but this is still surprising to me. Co people show me on the field. Bishop actually have a pulse. Gotta love the show me on the field crowd for going on there and commenting taking time out of their data comment. I don't care show me on the field. What does that do? Show that you actually do care a lot. You're just trying to seem tough or this one over the BS can't watch don't care. Then do more say loss. Okay. Said that no he didn't you're lying. It did say I don't care and shot up then he needs to say less than. Yeah. Show me unfiled button. I don't follow. He just follows me. I know show him how to follow you and everybody else. Apparently. He doesn't care. Yeah. They like their cereal with a little bit of year. You know, nothing says I really don't care like taking time out of your data comment to let people know that you don't care. Yeah, I'm gonna use that. But now as I'm giving you the silent treatment. Hey, MS what we'd be we twelve forty five week because they have one o'clock the next two days Wednesday Thursday Friday, we'll have a full show. Okay. Okay. I think we're going to give Watson this week for game of my life. I quit communicating with them back and forth. Sounds pretty interested. So I think that'll be our game my life on Friday.

Thanks for joining us today. Thanks so much for having. Absolutely. All right. So the Tigers have the first series in the books against Toronto. They have they split with the Blue Jays two games apiece. Both of Detroit's wins came in extra innings, but they scored exactly zero runs in the two losses. What did we learn about Detroit of from the first four games? Anything surprise you or stand out? Yeah. It was a little bit. Opposite of what I expected this year this year, expect pitching to be pretty bad in their offense to be okay. And it was just not the case this weekend. They're pitching was was actually really good. But their offense was abysmal in. I don't I don't know if we actually learned that's the way it's going to be hard to judge anything on four games. Right. Yeah. But early indications was weren't great. I I kind of skeptical. I think maybe some of that was just coming right back from spring training and not really the hitter is not being up to speed still. But I don't know. We'll see. So let's talk about the pitching staff. First of all the Tigers have lost. I believe for the season Michael Fulmer right to a bad pitching elbow. Yeah. Yeah. He tours partial partial Taylor tariff, one of ligaments in his elbow. So they're gonna they had the surgery already. He's out for at least a year probably more like next July is a good time to think of him coming back. What's the rest of the rotation? Look like. Well, now, they've got Jordan Zimmermann who they paid a lot of money to the other what's three years ago. And he actually had a great first start of the behind him is Tyson Ross who they signed this off season and Matt Moore they also signed this off season. And then Matthew Boyd who they acquired around the same time as Michael Fulmer. And then Spencer Turnball who is they brought him up from the minor leagues. Not familiar names. I think Tigers fans there's not a lot of talent there either. You could squint in something's ago. Right. Like with Zimmerman had a great start. I said Matt Moore had a great start which was kind of unexpected. But I as a whole I think it's going to be kind of a down unit for the team this year. What about on the offense of production? Where are Tigers gonna get hits and runs from you think? Well, I think the the top lineup is actually, okay. They still Miguel Cabrera is back. He hasn't done any real damage in the regular season yet in adult his, you know, MVP level Cabrera, but he looks pretty good. And I think he'll he'll be the driving force of the offense again this year. But Nicosia Knauss is coming off the best year of his career. He's he's back. And then I kind of expect better things from J mckendall areo this year he got off to a really hot start last year. They're third baseman Jim era and kind of falter down the stretch, and he just had on Sunday at a five hit game, which was a new career a career high. I wouldn't expect that every game, of course. But so I think those three will help and Kristen Stewart is a guy that brought up from the minors at the in the last year. And it's still too early to tell what kind of major league is going to be. But he's got a lot of power and in the minors. He showed a lot of patients. So he could be another solid offense into feast there. But yes, really just four or five guys. And then the bottom line of looks pretty grim. Lots of new names on this year's roster any of them. I mean, you mentioned Kristen Stewart anybody else who you think might be bright lights people. You might want to watch keep an eye on. Well, the government of their catcher, James McCann. They didn't send him an offer. And they brought up Grayson Greiner who I don't think he's gonna blow people away with his offense of production this year, this it is kind of know where he's he will be the tallest regular catcher in major league history. He's six foot six, but he normally that's not a good thing. Because you kind of in the way of the fire, but he manages to get pretty low back there. And he sees a really solid defender. But that's you know, casualties. I don't think they're gonna pick up on that too much in he'll be lucky to hit like two fifty this year. So yeah, I don't know. I mean, there's not a ton at least to start the year. There's not a ton of young exciting hitters aside from Ken Larry Stewart. We may see a few later in the season in the likes of das- Cameron. But it's tough to say obviously, very early. So everything is speculative at this point. But the Tigers are still in the middle of kind of rebuilding mode and everything. Do they have pieces, you know, that they could offer as trade bait to try to get better. Or are they sort of not even really thinking in those terms right now? You know, I I'm sure they would still like to trade nNcholas casinos. They were trying to train them all off season. And they never got a deal to their liking and beyond that, though, they really don't have much in the way of trade ships anymore. They traded their big ones in JD Martinez than Justin Verlander, and then just enough to in there. I think they were kind of hoping that if Michael Fulmer had a really good year that they could either flip him for a nice package of prospects. Or maybe you know, count on him to be the centerpiece of the next contender? But that kind of went down the down the drain with his injury. So aside from costano suit, it's possible. Matthew Boyd has a good year, and they could trade him. And then the two guys they signed in the offseason the pitchers Tyson Ross met more, I think they're really hoping they can get good. I. Half out of those guys and then trade them, but I'm a little bit skeptical that will happen to in two so far long season to go. Obviously are are you making any kind of projections. Like what how will the Tigers fair this year? Yeah. I think they're going to win about sixty eight games, which is four games better than last year. But still not very good. It's the they will be in contention for last place in the division. Again. It's not a good division. At all. The royals are also rebuilding the White Sox or maybe a step of head of the Tigers in there rebuild. But you got three teams that aren't really trying in the division upper sixties in terms of wins. But it could go five wins either way just based on the lack of quality in the division who does that leave to contend for the central division. Then you think well most people are picking the Indians. Just because there have the strength of a really good pitching staff and to superstars in the field. But they enough they didn't really do much that made. It seem like they're trying this year either. They're kind of just coasting on their good team from last year and the twins have a decent shot it making a run at it this year, they have they actually were trying and they have some prospects. They might be able to bring up later in the year. But it's basically a race between those team. So it sounds like from you know, from a sporting perspective kind of a home season for the Tigers. You know, what's your pitch to people for why should shell out and go down to commerical part to take chicken the ball games? I mean, you try to good new snacks at the stadium. It's always that's the thing. You know baseball. I think is the most. I mean, obviously, I'm a huge baseball fan, but baseball is the most enjoyable spectator sport because you can kind of go and not necessarily even pay attention that much. It's the games leisurely enough that you can, you know, pay attention for one batter and then wait two minutes into the ball in play. But and really even when we're talking about if you really just concerned about them winning or losing you still have even with the worst higher. Steve you've got like a forty percent chance that you're gonna see a wins. So those ads are not all that bad. And then when they're really good you've only got like a sixty percent chance they're going to win. So I think it's a good time to go down there. And just enjoy the sights and the sounds and the smells. It's it's a very sensory game to me. Chris Brown is host of locked on Tigers daily show part of the locked on podcast network.
