Twenty-Five Years Later, Ford Resurrects the Bronco
"If you're an offroad aficionado or even just WANNA be. This story is a big deal. After a quarter century Ford is resurrecting the Ford Bronco a direct rival to the jeep. Ford produce the Bronco for thirty straight years starting in nineteen, sixty six. The vehicle had only two doors reportedly one reason why Ford discontinued it in Nineteen ninety-six consumer sentiment was shifting toward four doors. Historians say the Bronco Developed Cult Status. After it was discontinued today, the beefy muscular vehicles, a sentimental favourite restored vintage models can sell for up to two hundred thousand dollars with a corporate unit called Ford icons. Ford is Heavily Marketing Nostalgia that division includes the Bronco, a Mustang and a new line of Ford F one fifty pick-up trucks, including a hybrid version, and soon to be debuted all electric. And Nostalgia sells, but it's far from the only reason. The automakers releasing a Bronco for the twenty first century. The company is capitalizing on a trend according to the automaker offroad vehicle, so called rugged SUV's. Twice, as popular as regular SUV's CNN reports that has engineered the new bronco models for quote hard off road driving. You know the kind that allows you to quote. Get far from civilization. An even stay there for awhile. Is the perfect escape for pandemic induced cabin fever. Get a dose of Adrenalin while avoiding the plague. It's a combination made for advertising. Heaven Kit needs to be the jeep wrangler as the Juggernaut of off road vehicles. CNBC reports that automakers have been trying to quote dethrone the Wrangler for decades. Without much success. Even during the pandemic GPS kept selling Fiat Chrysler sold an average of seventeen thousand jeep wrangler every month for the last five years according to the Detroit news last year, almost a quarter, million wrangler flew off dealership. Lots and experts say jeep owners are loyal. To a fault. Still Ford executives have moxie. They're predicting sales of two hundred thousand broncos over the next year, according to Automotive News. and. Keep in mind that the low end version of the new line. The broncos sport won't even be out until years end higher end versions of the Bronco won't be at dealerships until next spring. Ford is doing everything it can to make the Bronco enticing enough to away jeep lovers, and of course to persuade new off roaders to come into the Ford camp that includes besting the ramblers largest tires thirty three inches with whopping thirty five inch tires, Ford says a Bronco outfitted with the almost three foot in diameter tires can easily go through a couple of feet of water models also come with removable roofs and doors. Drivers can store the doors in the Bronco. For, it says. At about thirty thousand dollars, the price of the two door base Bronco comes in at only two hundred dollars more than the base price of the jeep wrangler at the top in a limited number of first edition for door Bronco started about sixty one thousand dollars, Ford began taking one hundred dollar deposits on Broncos last Monday when it released the new line I edition reservation slots sold out within a couple of hours. Still as bullish as the auto press is about the Broncos, the release comes against bleak backdrop for the auto industry. Overall vehicle sales plummeted when covid nineteen emerged shut the industry down for two months recently, both Ford and GM reported second-quarter sales declines of about thirty three percent from a year earlier jeep parent, Fiat Chrysler did even worse with sales down forty percent. And that puts a lot of pressure on Ford to live up to its promise of adding a billion dollars to the bottom line next year through Bronco Sales. And it adds pressure Chrysler to keep jeep at the top of the OFFROAD HEAP Stakes is high as the boulder strewn rocky mountains. The war between Bronco in gene. We'll be fascinating to watch.

"Publisher of the Detroit News, and what a pleasure and a privilege. It is for us to say Hello to each other here on WJR and by the way, by by way of full disclosure. I right. Column every Monday in the Detroit News, you may not even know that. But I do Gary I worked for you. I do and it's called coming. Oh, good one. Yeah. Good job. I don't know. But everybody hopes so and he certainly he knows that everybody wants him to play. But there's some good reasons. But that's another story. But you have the headline which I don't write says Detroit once you Tiger Woods in today's column. Matter of fact, you know, what I love about you, Gary is that your home or you were born in Royal Oak while I was I was thinking about that just looking back. I might be the first editor of the Detroit News since Ben burns who who is actually a Michigan native will. That's great news. I think that matters. I think you grew up in Midland, you graduated from Athens high school in Troy you went to Michigan state, go green. There's a lot of things that that matter to people within the sound of my voice, and it matters that the guy heading up the Detroit News is all of what you are. And what you've been you've done a lot. You've been metro editor deputy managing editor just a whole. Bunch of things. Now, you're at the very top. Because there are a lot of editor positions in a newspaper that sometimes it's hard to know, what people what they're really in charge of. But for you now from a business standpoint, you're in charge of everything if the Detroit News. Well, I am this largely the aditorial product. Of course, we're where the were in a partnership with the the newspaper partnership, the free press and news continue to be competitive newsrooms, but their business operations are combined. So it'll be my job to help look out for the interests of the Detroit News in that partnership and Detroit News readers and to make sure that the newsroom is humming along as it has bad, but continues to trying to get people the depth and explanatory reporting that they expect have come to count on for almost a hundred fifty years, Gary miles, the new editor and publisher of the Detroit News here with us on the Paul W j r I have to tell you that been they've been taught for a long time about one of the newspapers going out of business happily. I don't hear that very much anymore. Does that mean, everybody's maybe unhealthier footing. Well, I think the last couple of years certainly have been better. I understand that they've been very successful for the for the newspapers in in. You know, coming in the news and free press, the partnership, of course, you have to you know, it's been a tumultuous time for the industry, you know, like some people in Detroit, maybe watching is, you know, the company that owns the news is actually involved in a proxy fight or has been that will culminate this week to buy the company that was the free press. And that could mean who knows what for Detroit and other newspapers. But it'll be something we'll all be watching closely. But despite the, you know, the the success of the past couple of years, they you know, what are they saying about stocks? You got a pass performance doesn't necessarily indicate future. We'll be watching closely. I wasn't even following this as you call it proxy fight. But it's funny because people in the past the free press was stronger than the news what you're telling me, the company that owns the news might be buying the free press. And would it not? I hope it would be who've them to still have two different newspapers. Well, essentially what they're at. Now, they they've made a bit January of this week is going to be an energy enterprises, which owns the Detroit News is trying to get a seat on the on. The board was trying to get a pulse late. I think now technically it's looking for three seats on the board of Gannett, which owns the free press. So, you know, we'll see what happens, but other been a lot of as you said there's been a lot of talk over the years about what might happen. And yet here we still are great newspaper some of the law. Yeah, you're right about that. It used to be we thought of growing up in Monroe Michigan. The thought of the free press is being more liberal in the Detroit News has being more conservative. Do you look at it that way as the the entity and publisher well in terms of news coverage we're trying to play it straight down the middle at the news. And I think the free press probably is too though, I can't speak for them. The news is, you know, the most valuable asset of any paper is its reputation for telling the truth, and that's without bias one way or the other. That's certainly true that the that the editorial pages of of the news and free press lean in different directions. Detroit News story libertarian and the free press more liberal, you know, I expect that will stay that way. At least I'd aren't okay. All right. Well, you have a specific goal in mind that you can share with us that you'd like to accomplish rather quickly in your new position as editor and publisher of the Detroit News, Gary, well, we wanna keep up the the depth. And and and honest reporting that people have come to expect and even ramp it up. In the days ahead. So we're looking forward to continue to cover this community in the way, we have and stronger than ever I hope. All right, anyway, we can be of service along the way you let us know. Congratulations to you. Thank you publicly, Gary miles a Homer. I mean, he was born in Royal Oak for goodness sakes, went to Athens high school in Troy graduate of Michigan state. "Headline in the Detroit News says that you strip the gas tax hike from the transportation budget. I'm not sure that's quite accurate because it implies that it was in there to begin with. That's correct this. This is just the people should be just comfortable and calm. This is the first step of multi step process that prosecuted budget. There's a lot of ago, she should take place. But quite frankly, the Senate Republicans don't really have to worry too much about damaging the governor's proposal because her around the state and making her presentation says done a pretty good. You have of that all by itself, and you base that on the marketing resources group poll that seventy five percent don't like the idea of a one hundred seventy percent increase in the gas tax, plus two other things in pools by us independently in in parallel have affirmed that in one case, it was actually even worse. So. You know, the the appetite for citizens of Michigan to embrace that kind of change and guest tax is just nonexistent. And I believe overtime budget process. And then we'll prove that's unnecessary. Nobody. Nobody disagreed with the notion that we need to continue to find an spend more money on Roach on a perpetual basis. But we think there's other ways that we can accomplish besides simple solution of just can't stacks. Have you decided on a number that you need to increase the the amount of revenues for roads? I know before it was between one and a half to two billion dollars. She's looking to raise one point nine billion through this strategy that she's laid out have we decided on a number of what makes sense. So first of all let's start with this guy. There is no perfect number. It depends on who does the analysis and one of their Simpson's are it's a moving target. And I don't think I don't believe there is an exact perfect number. I think the industry is actually sending a very clear signal that we're approaching a point where spending in sending a lot more money is going to be sold in near immediate inflation costs. Now, the operating engineers and some other skilled groups of Indus if said that with all the other projects that are planned to take place in Michigan. In addition to roads, they're running out of resources. And so I think it's more a judgment not how much we need. But how much can we have Zohrab in a responsible way? So I'll just I'll just be blunt with you. I think that I think that trying to get to two point five billion inclusive of the one point two that we will have a common. In this next budget. So I think is a good next step in terms of the what you did today. I know that you did pull forward some revenues or some spending. Tell me what you did today that will put a little more pavement out there. So two thousand fifteen we passed a Bill that would ultimately resulted one point two million dollars more on roads for perpetuity than what we have historically spent and what we in that was to come that was to come to fruition in the budget year. Twenty one twenty two we are pulling that ahead one year in in accomplishing it in this current, but we're working on this current budget. They were working on. So we will have taken a year out of the the timeframe accelerated it, and so we at the end of the two thousand nineteen and twenty budget year. We will have have achieved the additional one point two billion dollars on top of our historical spending day. So it's between one hundred twenty one hundred and fifty mil. More than what we were expecting in the twenty twenty budget year one hundred and fifty six million. Okay. Okay. All right. So the the Democrats are firing back here. They they called you coward saying that this should be done in the budget process. Now, not waiting until later. I wanna give you an opportunity to respond to to to their complaint. Well, besides you citing the old poem that we learned in grade school bus, sticks sticks and stones. No, I've been I've maintained from the beginning that the long-term road funding needs to be a separate conversation to the budget process. If they happen to come together fine. But making one dependent on the other in my mind, just compromises both products. And I know my governor doesn't believe doesn't agree with that. She wants to make a deal so to speak. But I think that that would that would leave out far too, many creative ideas that we haven't fully fleshed out yet. And you know, like like I said moment ago. Guess tax increase is the simplest solution. But I'm not convinced this the best to do. So you're not taking it off the table DEA think that we'll have something to discuss in the firm of an alternative road plan by the time you and I visit up in mackinac at the intimate. I absolutely believe loyal. Yes. Okay. Good. I'm looking forward to doing that. We're putting that down in, you know. Okay. All right. We will look forward to that. In the meantime, as you say nothing off the table. She has said that unless there's a real roads plan in the budget that she won't sign the budget. You think you can come to an agreement over the definition of real- between now? And then no that's going to be heard. That's going to be hurt determination, we will deliver to my governor, a a balanced and properly proportioned a budget by early to mid June. And it may or may not included perpetual long-term comprehensive wrote them, and then she'll be able to decide then whether what she. Wants to do that. All right senators Turkey, thanks so much for making time for us. We appreciate it. All right, Senator Mike Shuki, the Senate majority leader saying don't let your hair catch fire. This will get done all part of the process. What say you on this? It does seem despite the forty five cents a gallon hike for good or.

"From an interim perspective at Michigan would say, so yeah, it's been a horrific year for Michigan state for all the tangled instead of involved with Larry Nassar on the sexual abuse that went on there with USA gymnastics and all the tentacles of that organization, but John Engler was appointed the interim president of Michigan state during this troubling and difficult time for a lot of people took over for Lou. Simon who himself resigned under heavy criticism in the handling of the Larry Nassar who is now facing criminal charges. Police about the Larry Nassar investigation, and she resigned and angler is now resigning because of things that came out of his mouth that are simply inexplicable. I mean, basically saying that some of the victims were enjoying the Larry Nassar, a sexual assault case, we're enjoying the spotlight a little too much. I mean, this is the exact quote for people who may not have heard. There are a lot of people who are touched by this survivors who haven't been in the spotlight, he told this to the Detroit News in some ways, they have been able to deal with this better than the ones who have been in the spotlight who are still enjoying that moment at times, you know, the awards and recognition enjoying the moment. It just blows my mind as thinking that. Okay, one. If you're if you're thinking that, you know, they're really getting a lot of us. But then then saying it saying that out loud. I mean, let's be honest. What an idiot. I mean, are you serious? So this is a guy who did that. All this fall out. They call a meeting for Thursday that the board, and they say basically resign or were firing you. Yup. So he writes, an eleven page resignation letter not one time in the letter eleven pages. Does he mention the words he said all he does is basically listening accomplishments on how Michigan? In state is a better off place. Now that he was the interim president for a year. It's embarrassing mean what an embarrassment. I mean, you wanna talk about pouring bleach on something. He just wipe it everything out and start over again there. Holy I don't believe what's going on there. One idiot after another speaking there sarahspain wrote a great piece for ESPN w that profiles the last year for angler that is ripe with a number of other very regrettable choices and ways in which he has made Michigan State University, a less hospitable place than it already was for these survivors of this awful instant, well, look at just one thing in December angler closed a ten million dollar fund set aside by the school to help Nassar survivors, pay mental health care bills. That alone should have been enough for them to say, you're not the right guy here. But it is mind boggling to use the words enjoying it. And not understanding what was taken from each one of these victims. But I think that's the thing. Is this guy like all the leadership? That was a part of what happened when Larry Nassar was met allowed this to go on we talked about it condemning Larry Nassar was easy because finding right hearing that out is easy. It's finding everyone else allowed it to happen along the way that becomes just as important in making sure this doesn't happen again. When you have the benefit of being the one who comes in at the end of his and is seen all of the atrocities and says, I am now tasked with at least being partially responsible for bringing us all to a place that makes life better not only for the victims and the survivors. But for people going forward that don't have to deal with this. When you've got all that as the backdrop, and you're still viviscal is in this process. It's a reminder that just because you have status, you know, he was the former Michigan governor before this and just because you have risen to a certain point. And are given a position of leader does not make you qualified to lead. No. And the fact that he wrote that eleven page resignation letter. What? What you what he just sort of written? I'm sorry and move on. That's it. I don't need the other eleven pages with thousands of words just eleven Genoa eleven pages on what he did to the positive for Michigan state while he was there and not one thing about what he had said it just it just blows. My do need to read the article that there are item as for after item of other things in his tenure there a things he did that you just. Adults. These are adults who are supposed to be the smart people running organizations it. It's incredible. We'll end again. So we look at him to and we've got to look at everyone else around. Michigan state who put this guy is track record into the spotlight. The kids the students the people that could be victims of other things like this in the future deserve better leadership at this university. And they're not getting it instead of eleven pages. One page two words bold print. I'm sorry. That would have been a much better way to handle this situation coming up we'll have much more on my new favorite name in sports. Boy. Plus speaking of one of the favorites.

"In the attack. John Engler will resign as Michigan state university's interim president amid backlash over comments. He made about sex assault victims the final straw for the university's board came last week. When he told me Detroit News that former school Dr Larry Nassar's victims had been in the spotlight, and are quote still enjoying that moment at times, you know, the awards and recognition Bryant Muslim is a university trustee. The most shocking thing to me is watching them interact with faculty, and employees and students and just the way he intimidates and be little angler leaves one week from
