"Party is scored some impressive wins in. In recent years and in recent days, we're talking about that and what it means for the future of the Party and most pressingly what it means for the party's prospects in November. My guests this hour Kimberly Atkins of the Boston Globe and Paul Begala Democratic Strategist and author of the new book. You're fired the perfect guide to beating Donald Trump and Paul and Kimberly standby because I wanNA introduce representative, democratic congresswoman, Rashida Leib who represents Michigan's thirteenth Congressional district and Congresswoman. Thanks for your time. Thanks for joining us. Thank you for having me. Happy. It's a pleasure to have. You won your primary this week, fending off a challenge from Brenda Jones, president of the Detroit City Council. So congratulations on that. Two years ago, you want in a very close race. The margin was a lot bigger this week. Oh, what's the big message from? Your. Victory. I mean I think it's really important for folks to know. You know it's not just our names that are on the ballot when you look think of Jamal and think of Corey, and and so many others that are running that don't take corporate pat money. Were representative. Folks that want Medicare for all the Greenie deal the. Fifty dollar minimum wage increase stopping structural racism in our country, India mass incarceration. All of those things are on the ballot, not just our name, your lived experiences, and what we bring forward. is what folks want They want connection to Congress not just a look differently, but also the feeling talk differently about the issues that matter most to them, right. So I WANNA ask you about the November election and efforts by Democrats, defeat, Donald Trump, you you like corey Bush, you're you're Bernie Sanders, supporter, how enthusiastic are you about Joe Biden? Suzy ask about getting rid of Donald Trump My folks cannot afford. We can't risk other four years of Donald Trump. You know I have the most polluted zip code in the State of Michigan and one of the first things he did when this pandemic became very real and our country is he decided to pass him executive order to direct the EPA to stop enforcing the clean air and the. The clean? Water. ACT, which has nothing to do if anything during this pandemic is when we need to fight back up their pollution and environmental racism and so for for many of our folks with really important with on the ballot like I said, it's not named it what it represents in for US having a president that is in Donald Trump is very important to my residents right now. Right? Congresswoman after your election, a couple of years ago, you famously called for the impeachment of of the president using vulgar epithet that we can't repeat on this program. So respond to the idea that what Democrats really need to win in. November. Might be a less confrontational approach than what you then what you represent at least on that day. Yeah I think I. Think for Anthony for people are directed. It's very much policing. My words and pleading women of Color that are in politics or even policing people that are angry and passionate, and and trying to take those words I. think what you heard is a mother of two boys in our country. That was very frustrating, very angry about the hate agenda coming out of the Oval Office, and the fact that so many people were dismissing it So many people were saying well he's doing this or that or he? His promise, these kind of rationalizing away the racism rationalizing away the he's bulking supremacy in our country I. Think you know for many of us. It's not these categories y'all are keep you know referring to many of us. It's really that there's people like us, regular folks. You know people are not running for office and people are tired of it. Know we're tired of the same old not kind of speaking like the. Rookie Nettie, anger that you feel that pain. You feel you feel on the streets and bringing I mean I love when one of my residency to me? He may be liberated, Rasheeda, you make me feel freer why? Because I'm speaking in a way that I think she just needs to feel like, okay. Somebody gets urgency. Somebody gets and understand that we have no time to wait we're. Tired of waiting. One more question before I let you go sometimes big elections come down to one simple idea I mean before asked this question I would say it's unfortunate perhaps, but but it seems to be true I mean, for example, Donald trump latched onto this idea of draining the swamp and there's lots of evidence he hasn't delivered on that, but he tapped into a sort of essential idea of corruption that resonated with a lot of people back in two thousand sixteen. So my question to you, what's the one simple idea that Democrats need to push in order to help them win in November? Yeah. Well, I want to say this, it wasn't. It wasn't fat for trump. I think he tapped into anger He tapped into fact that many people felt very much. The government wasn't about them and he agreed with that even though he's very much behind that curtain profiting off of our pain off of our oppression pretended he wasn't like that. But he was absolutely one of the people in currently. You can see it, I mean he's running his businesses out of the oval. Office. You have a crooked CEO as president of the United. States. But I think for us, you know many of us that are winning these elections. It is the human contact direct contact with people and hearing them, and then not selling them out I. Think you know it is hard when you say you're for environmental justice, but you're taking money from the same people that are poisoning our air in our water. I, you know people need to be able to trust us to be able to have this connection. Connection with us, you know I'm the eldest fourteen anthony been taking care of people all my life, my father only at Fourth Grade Education, my mother eighth grade, we grew up in a UAW household. My father never understood what it meant to have human dignity. Until he became part of a union, we're just losing touch from that I think is Democrats losing. That connection that we had with the working class and we need to get back to that. I mean. We don't even talk about the P. Word enough. Poverty poverty is with killing US people focus so much on who killed. George. Floyd, which is absolutely important police brutality for sure. But what about what killed your? What we? What are we doing to set up the system against our black neighbors across the country? You know this uprising that has happening is real and we need connect to that pain. We can make that hurt and make sure that translates into into meaningful action. All right. Democratic congresswoman it to leave. She represents Michigan's thirteenth congressional. District. congresswomen. Thank you so much for your time today and again, congratulations on on your win this week..

"For over four hundred days with a of other. Amazing Saint Louis Young leaders, and a registered nurse ordained pastor a single mom someone who got covid and survived it and kept going lost before and kept going I just can't. I can't I'm I'm an utter off the tenacity of of Corey Bush and I didn't know I. didn't know she had covid nineteen. She had covert nineteen symptom Yes. She had to go through that while it's an amazing story because say so here you have someone who was one of the key act of surround Mike Brown's murder there in in Ferguson. And as you said you that you, she ran two years ago lost. decided to come back. I'm sure everybody was telling her this year. Why? I mean. It was clear. You couldn't do it in eighteen and look you're going up against you're going up against nineteen year right? Nineteen Year incumbent Lacy Clay. His Dad had held the seat for thirty years. I think right before that. Yeah. Okay. So since one, thousand, nine, hundred, sixty, nine, father, and son have run this district of owned it. So her chance of winning, let's just be honest if you and I were doing this conversation three days ago before the election. I'm sure you will. You would have been very upbeat and hopeful him and you probably knew because you've been on the ground. So you knew that actually had excellent chance but to somebody like myself or somebody not there, it would just be like, oh, she's going to have to lose again Oh and then boo and I mean boom. I mean this was this is exactly when Eo aosabq defeated the He was like here in New York. Like the fourth fourth in line there amongst the democratic leadership. Back, in back in two thousand, eighteen in Congress and and tossed him out the people tossed, toss him out and put her in. So this was just this was an amazing. Thing that happened in Saint Louis and that and she doesn't represent just Ferguson I. mean she represents a large part of of Saint Louis in the area there and and they decided just two years later. After saying, they didn't want her. we need her now now twenty twenty, this is we have to send the Congress. Corey Bush. Yeah. I mean they don't when people say they don't have a chance. It's because you know it until we do something about it, and that's what I hope is a huge takeaway from this race for our movement. This should have been a lot of ways very easy in the sense of what we the backdrop that we just laid. Right that makes this moment. So monstrous in historic. And I. You know folks like Cory really really deserve it and they're going to be more. Our Future is very bright when it comes to the bench of people that we have that light corey have gone through so much by are so ready to get in the fight. And that's why we exist in. So many other institutions like the sunrise movement and data for progress and all of these other key national organizations that couple with these local movements that are happening on the ground that despite. not having the resources although in this case, we were able to gather those together quickly at the very end put put folks over the top and so just just again to reemphasize, it's not just a New York it's in Missouri it's it's in, it can be in in every part of the country it doesn't have to be the AFC wants to lifetime candidates we can we can work together. So I think that that's a really hopeful thing I'm I'm trying to take out of this and looking forward to Alex Morris coming up Kara. Eastman. Who who's running out in Nebraska who were going to unseat. Don Bacon who's Republican down there. So I'm I'm really looking forward to to translating the momentum but you've been you've been also you've been unseating Democrats who've been maybe in office a bit too long and and who are not understanding what time it is that we're in and I like you said I think the huge takeaway from Tuesday. Is I want people listening who are listening right now wherever you listen to this around the country and. And even if you're not in this country in your, thank you for listening by the way Thank you for carrying about US Americans but but. I. Know There are people right now you know you've had this this member of Congress. In their a bit too long and is not as responsive as he needs to be usually I can use that Pronoun there would be inaccurate regarding the people were talking about and you have to not think any wonder that this can't happen that we can't ever run somebody in actually win. This happened in in a red state. is Alexandra just said, not this didn't happen in New York City yesterday happened in Missouri if it can happen there. It can happen in your district I mean I just I hope people are hearing what you're saying here because because not only as you said, is an earthquake. The new. York Times. said. something. I was listening to earlier they called it a landslide in Detroit for she to leave. Rashida. Won Her primary two years ago. By nine hundred votes share the run against the same person. Again, this time that her opponent was is was the president of the Detroit City Council a well known political person in in Detroit. This time Rashid did not win by nine hundred votes over over her. Opponent she won by I think it was almost thirty thousand is that right? Thirty thousand votes she wants sixty thousand votes, the thirty thousand volts a landslide amass of. affirmation. Of Her in Congress and and knowing her and what she's had to go through whether the night we were traveling around Iowa for Bernie. and. Somebody had mentioned Hillary's name. And the stage they're a discussion. There's like five thousand people there and when Hillary's name was mentioned. Rashida. Just Cathartic late won't even she doesn't. She doesn't have the filter that was put inside of most of us would that shouldn't be there and we should work on getting that filter out of there as much as possible. She just booze just here's the always name and she just goes boo and then that was everywhere on the Internet then in the media for days and days and people telling her this is why you're gonNA. Lose This is where you're GONNA lose your not team player. you're you Are you know Pro Palestinian your this? Who though she has passed in? So it's hard to be now pro Palestinian. Chelsea American. But. And yet here here we are celebrating her victory this week. What was your? What was your reaction to that because? She does also known for on the night that she was sworn in the Congress. They had a big victory party there in DC and and You might have been there actually. took. them to the microphone and. Made her pronouncement about trump. So awfully trump's impeachment the f the f-bomb moment. Really. Don't win. Maybe they. Because we're going to go.

"In alabama this is something that from what i understand listening to them solidifies their views on this senate race in alabama because alabama voters are levin at nancy pelosi on meet the press and they are looking at her saying that john conyers who used taxpayer dollars and we know that because there's a paper trail and the czech cleared so we know it this is not that's not up for debate that happen the only that i mean you could lie and say maybe he donated at he didn't we know because the czech cleared john conyers who used taxpayer dollars uh to pay off women that he harassed to fly in women for him to exploit she calls him an icon i mean i guess it is pretty iconic i mean he was paying these women to shut up while his wife was sitting in jail after she had been if if convicted of taking bribes while on the detroit city council so yes there are an iconic couple the conyers this is amazing though she actually it's believe all women but with some exceptions you know the she actually in the middle of this whole me to thing in the middle of the accusations about sexual impropriety here you have the most powerful woman in the democrat party owing to bad for an an a sexual harasser there and we know and are not seen alleged because there's photographic evidence that just one of them and nate silver even said democrats have lost the thread on sexual harassment they said you can debate and franken i mean well franken there's photographic evidence conyers of the paper trail over said you can debate gbenah marginal case i guess but the conyers kline represents a serious abuse of power one that required a taxpayerfunded legal settlement sehgal settlement i had at the taxpayer because it is and pelosi doesn't see that is a firing offence so here's the problem alabama voters and ultimately this comes back to all of them uh it is all for them to decide on this what they're going to do your whom are going to vote they're looking at nancy pelosi excusing john conyers abuse of public trust misuse of taxpayer dollars to pay off women that he sexually harassed misuse of taxpayer dollars to fly and women.
