"He's been really good. He's been really good. I will say the beauty of the jazz is they're just like a wave. Yeah. You know? They got like 6 guys who can score. They got marking in. They got Clarkson. They got Malik Beasley. They got Kelly Olynyk. They got Colin Sexton. Weirdly a team, I can't believe he was saying this built to withstand injuries. The Utah Jazz. Built to a stand injuries and also now Sexton hasn't been getting a ton of run. So now maybe you fill in some more minutes with Colin Sexton, who I expect to be more in the mix than he's been. So this might open up an opportunity for him. That has been interesting, huh? I think we all thought, oh, this is gonna be the guy they played 35 minutes a 100%. Put the ball in his hands, try to turn him into something maybe a little bit more kind of by brute force blunt object, no other choice, how usage turn him into something, maybe a little bit more than what he's been in his career. And interesting enough, he's just been part of the ensemble. Just part of the ensemble, but we'll see how it shakes out with Mike Conley. We mentioned the grizzlies earlier in the program, John morant. I hate this. I hate it because I love to watch week to week with an ankle injury. Triple J didn't play the other day. They already lost Desmond bane for an extended period of time. They were at the top of the west as we record this. They've fallen back just slightly their game and a half off the pace or ten and 7. They were one of the great surprises last season. They're young and up and coming when they're healthy. They're one of the best teams in the conference.

"I'd like to see. Emmy. I like it. My leg is poly congratulations. Thank you. They said I wouldn't do this in high school. I would never get out. I was not going to happen. They said it couldn't happen. My counselor said you'll never make it and you'll never have a Velcro wallet in your name. In that net order. Special day. So we have candles on the website. Yeah, we got dog biscuits. Dog biscuits. Got puzzles up there. We got all kinds of things. We got other things coming your way. Yeah, get ready. Yeah. We got our calendars. We did the calendar shoot. Got all that stuff. And one big surprise coming up too. We're gonna have that for you coming up here and maybe the next week or so. Big surprise there. All right. Let's see. So there was a story that we talked about earlier today. The grizzlies were flirting with the nets, but they weren't willing to give up. So John morant was untouchable and it felt like there were Desmond bane and jaren Jackson junior the third were not available. And I'm thinking, who else is available here? And I had been told the pelicans were in the mix too for Kevin Durant. But then they're not trading Zion, and they're not trading Brandon Ingram. I'm like, guys, does Kevin Durant, you know, you got to give up something here. But it felt like nobody was willing to give up some items here. And now it looks like Kevin Durant is going to stay. Nothing to see. Everything's good here. Let's see. We also talked about and Deion Sanders brought this up. Deion said, hey, it feels like everybody's getting into the Hall of Fame. How about we get different jackets? First ballot Hall of Famer. Now he didn't say first ballot, but you get a gold jacket. We had one of our listeners say, how about a gold jacket? Everybody else not a first ballot Hall of Famer. Gets a silver jacket. I said, all right. I like it. But then people said, you know, you're not being sensitive. How would you feel if you got a silver Jack and I go? Be a first pound Hall of Famer. That's all, you're not, so you don't get one. Eric and Florida joins us. Hi, Eric, what's on your mind?

"You could very well be the face of the entire league soon enough because you're that good and you've shown that who knows what that next step looks like for jobs, right? Are we super excited about, you know, it's not like he goes to two, it's probably a one one a situation, but how do we feel about that? I will say it's interesting the thought did cross my mind, but I believe ja, didn't he give his most improved trophy to Desmond bane. He does see he did. He's literally, he put it in Desmond bay's house. So I think he has shown to be a great teammate. I mean, obviously, supported the team when he was injured, you know, still around. I think he's one of those guys that I think could see the bigger picture. This KD topic, though, does make me want to throw a surprise email at you, John. Because this is now a continuing plot line. Last week, Elliott gold sent us the email, Tatum for KD straight up. Who says no, Jeremy and I both said the Celtics probably say no. Elliot follows up. Okay, back to Katie for Tatum straight up. Maybe the Celtics have to say no because of narrative and optics. But if you switch Tatum and Katie for last year's finals, the Celtics are definitely better and probably beat the warriors, right? From a purely basketball standpoint, the subjects are a better team with Katie and Tatum's spot. You know, he's changing my mind a little bit on this one. Are we going too far with the Tatum's gonna explode in the next 5 years? If the Celtics traded for Katie right now with just straight adjacent Tatum, wouldn't they be a better team next season? It's an interesting thought experiment, especially where he says, you know, if you had put KD in the Tatum spot. That's what started in a little bit. He has a point. He has a point because you're right. In a vacuum, that's probably a better team, right? However, it's not a vacuum. And I don't know what the ceiling is for Tatum. I do know that he's very, very young, and incredibly talented, and that team works as currently comprised. So I think when you're factoring in the age component and the fact that you just got to the finals and okay, yeah, it didn't come out the way that you were expecting or hoping against the warriors, but sky's the limit for that team without having to do that. It would give me pause, right?

"He left him in Minnesota, but I think any package has to start with two of Dylan Brooks, Desmond bane and jaren Jackson. I think you have to part ways with two of those guys. I think you tell the nets pick one of Jaron Jackson junior or Desmond baine and you get Dylan Brooks and whatever else we need to make the salaries match. And I think if you're the grizzlies, I think you do that trade. I really do, as great as jaren Jackson junior is, as much as I'm a fan of Desmond bane, shout out to Michael bean as profile about him. I think you make that trade if you're Memphis. I really do. Yeah, and I want to be clear. I mean, I really like triple J and I really like Desmond Bain. I like them both. I do not like them as much as Kevin Durant. We talked about this the last time before you went on your August sabbatical, like the rest of the NBA, where if you can get Kevin Durant for, I don't know, anything, right? No matter what that anything is, it's always going to be expensive. The answer is almost always in an every instance, yes, because he's Kevin Durant, so I understand why the grizzlies. They've got a young team. They were on the rise last year. They might not want to mess with the trajectory of their team. I understand that unplugging some of these younger guys might seem scary to them. But of course, triple J and Desmond bay and have to be on the table. And if you had to unload both of them for Kevin Durant, I would still do that because it's Kevin Durant. So I don't think, I don't think it's much of a thought experiment. I thought the tweet was sort of silly. I'm sure that that's the position that the grizzlies are taking with the nuts and whatever negotiations that they've undertaken so far. But to say that those two guys are off the table. Okay, then what are you sending, right? Get out of here. The other thing, though, I want to reverse engineer this. I think theoretically and on paper, it would be a wonderful landing spot for Kevin Durant, right? I really like the shape of the grizzlies. Obviously, ja took a massive step. Immediately makes them contenders in the west. If you're Kevin

"And then who is it they picked up midway through. I've been seeing rumors of Mike Conley that they're interested in trying to go after. They got Karis levert to talk about so that would be an interesting one. I just don't know what you would get from them. Yeah, I'm not too sure, but if you really think about it THT since he's not a pure point guard, he's a guy that you could put with Garland as well on the floor. And I think that's part of the things they want to take a little bit of the ball handling and playmaking pressure off of him. So you can put a THD on the floor with him. And it could work. So I don't know if they'd be interested, but that is a team that I wouldn't mind calling up if I were the Lakers. Give me Darius Garland, please. Thank you. Who would have been the Lakers pick at four? Yes, they kept that big. No. Is that true? Yep. Yep. That was the AD pick, though. 2019. Oh, okay. All right, all right. I'll take that. If that was like the Danny Green. I was like, 'cause I know we weren't for the green, but the Danny Green pick was supposed to be a Desmond bane, I think. Oh, good. Glad we didn't pass on anything great for your dentist Schroeder. That's tough. At the end of the day, that's tough. Oh my gosh, Dennis. "On the floor for that? I don't know how you do it. I was. Don't marvel at it. I mean, that was a crazy move. Yeah, I also just get hype off of those plays. I think it just gives me some more energy to play defense. Job is pretty much says like if you all just locked in on defense like Oxford offensively. And I think you scored her last 15 points or something. I don't know what it was, but it was crazy to watch. I'm always right there for all of his plays too. So I'm always getting the best view of him doing all of his crazy dunks and all of his crazy crossover moves, but yeah, he just really is learning how to put a team on his back in the fourth and how to just take over and how to win these really big games for us. Are you guys anticipating that the talk after this game was they're not going to let job be this comfortable in the open floor. They're going to blitz them. They're going to trap them. They're going to press them. He's just not going to be able to get his are you guys anticipating that and already sort of plotting. All right, if they do that, X, Y, and Z, we have to do we have to do these other counters. Yeah, I mean, we have a bunch of plans for a bunch of different defenses. You know, the Timberwolves, they trapped him a bunch. They made a tougher for him. So it was something that we have definitely worked on a bunch because it's something that we're used to because jaw being as great as he is. You know, he's going to have times where he's going to have to pass it and other guys are going to have to make the play. So we're kind of used to and some that we're going to be ready for. Lost in the highlight reel of jaw finishes last night and the Gary Payton Dylan Brooks thing. I think you might be happy that it was lost when I have to ask you about it. Wiggins, Wiggins got you pretty good. Your fellow Canadian got you pretty good and the whole warrior's bench was there talking right at you. And you just, you just seemed like you kind of got up and drive back on defense and then dunked on the other end, but when you see that coming, is there a, is there a moment where you realize uh oh and who was the loudest voice on the warriors bench getting on you? No, man. I love it, man. It's playoff basketball. I'm gonna jump every time for everything. I honestly he kind of caught me off guard though a bit. I didn't think that he was he was gonna dunk it. I thought he was gonna try to lay it in kind of, but he powered it through my hands really so. On the bench though, it was in assortment of voice meowing at me, I couldn't even get told whose voice it was. They probably weren't saying nice things. I couldn't really hear it that well, but yeah, I mean, it was just like just, you know, get back on the next play and then dunk really like, I mean, it's something that's gonna happen in the playoffs, something that's gonna happen. Andrew Wiggins can jump high. I'm sure that, you know, the whole country of Canada was kind of happy to see that or kind of shocked her. They probably thought it was cool, but yeah, I mean, I'm sure that, you know, I can definitely, you know, I mean, I'm somebody that, you know, dunks on people too. So I definitely, you know, kind of know what the feeling is. So I decided to try to get back up quickly and go and make a play on the other end. You already kind of hinted at this, but I was thinking about your game and the grizzlies in general. And I was like, you know, this is a, this is an in your face team with an in your face personality, but like I don't really, I don't really remember Brandon Clark being like a big trash talker getting anyway. And so and you are self described. You are the quieter one, I guess, of this group. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I'm not really one that talks too much trash. If I get hyped, I'll definitely yell something at you. But it won't really be like personal, though, really. But yeah, we got some guys that like to chirp kind of and they can definitely back it up though. So that's just kind of been like a theme of our team just kind of having the bark and the bike together and it's been fun really. It's been fun seeing that and it's been fun being a part of the so speaking of that, I think the moment that you guys announced yourselves to casual fans. I mean, the people who do this every day for a living, we've been watching your rise, but it was the Lakers game in Los Angeles. I remember that. Which has the job block on Avery Bradley, which we'll talk about, but it also has the Desmond bane LeBron trash talking it today when LeBron is kind of telling you guys just shut up and play, you know, and I went back and watched that today because I was like, I wonder what Brandon's doing during that kerfuffle. And what you're doing is you're standing next to Desmond as this argument is happening. And then you start pointing down at the floor and saying something and I can't tell what you're saying. Do you, what do you remember of that exchange? I gotta see it again. I might have just been saying that like, yeah, Braun were like here now like we're here for good now or something. I'll probably be saying something similar to that. I haven't seen that video in a while, but probably just, you know, like backing up Dez and his battle versus one of the great players ever. So I was just trying to be there for Dez probably, but yeah, I think that was definitely a time where, you know, the world kind of saw that we have grit for real and that we're in that we really don't care because we won the game by 30 plus two or like we were up by like 30 plus at least. But yeah, that was definitely crazy to see. I mean, I was like, wow, does you're definitely brave for that. That's kind of a lot, but, you know, that's how the crazy great year and played so well. So it's something that you just had like all the confidence in the world. Yeah, you don't see a lot of guys go at LeBron, particularly now he's like, he's like, and he's like 37 or something. He's a really elder statesman of the game. So it was surprising then to see this young guy just getting in there. And now he was talking, he didn't have to talk, but he was surprising. Yeah. I think that I mean, like I said, that's just like a really light confident guy and in his game. It was just I don't think he has any fear. And I'm not sure if Braun bumped him first or something, but it Braun did bump in first. I know it does. It wasn't really going to back down and he was definitely going to say back something in him. What are your memories of that block on Avery by squatting Superman? Are you on the floor? I should have watched it before this year. Where were you? I think I was on the bench and I think I like dove on the ground after we're so so shocked like every time that I'm like on the bench when Giada some crazy like I usually just dive on the ground or like I just fall down to the ground because I'm so shocked at what I just saw. Yeah, that was a crazy one. I've seen jog at some crazy blocks and some crazy dumps on the bench and man, it can really get you high if you really just make playing every night so much more fun so yeah, just craziness. I think that I dove.

"You may have been or you may have a rich history in podcasting. People may have had high expectations for you as a podcaster, but if there was a most improved award, I would vote for you. Do you see where I'm going with this Beck? I humbly accept this honor as the MIP of podcasting. I've been working hard. I feel like it's, you know what, it's about time that the haters finally came around on me, mannix, and recognized my craft. I see where you're going. We've got a really we had a fairly strange result in the most improved player this year with John morant. Did it bother you that we got John morant as our most improved of 2021, 22? I've been saying for years in all my years of voting that this was the one award that was always the most subjective. Some people like to vote for high lottery picks who made big jumps in their second third or fourth year. I have always viewed it as an award for the guys that weren't blue chip prospects that were late first round picks. Second round picks, undrafted free agents, guys you had almost no expectations for. A guy like John morant, who is a great player. If he didn't miss those what 30 games, he would have been in the mix for top 5 for MVP, all star. Everything about him is great. But I expected him to be this good. Based on what I saw last year, I saw in a way much of this coming. So for him to win most improved, it's just weird. I mean, frankly, I thought his teammate Desmond bane was more worthy of that award. I thought Jordan Poole was worthy of that award. Dijon Murray turning into an all star this year. Was more worthy of this award. Takes nothing away from the player that ja is, but this is just kind of a weird award, I thought for him to win. It is weird, and look, like with all of these awards for the most part, there was really no definition. So it's eye of the beholder stuff. We make it up as we go along. Some of us, I think he'd tradition more and you've heard me say this about MVP. How do we know what MVP means when there's no definition by 30 or 40 years worth of MVP results that give us a composite picture of what it means to be MVP in the NBA? And it holds fairly consistent. Most improved same thing, but we've got a couple different things going on this year, Chris. I'll get to the vote totals in a second, but one of them is this. We now have, I think, like a little bit of a schism in NBA Twitter and NBA media and NBA Twitter and NBA ballots are not necessarily the same thing. There's only a hundred voters, but it does seem like. And I know of at least one voter who was very strident about this point that it says most improved and he takes it very literally. Most improved. It's just the person who improved the most. And it doesn't matter whether their first pick, the 30th pick or undrafted. And so that's fine. If you want to be that literal about it, that's fine. The tradition of the award and then here I'm going to cite our old friend Mike Monroe longtime NBA writer from the Denver post and the San Antonio express news now retired, but Jeff McDonald at the San Antonio express news spurs beat writer has noted on Twitter recently that, hey, Monroe always told me, most improved is for one of the other guys..

"desmond bane" Discussed on Dual Threat with Ryen Russillo

"Those two guys, they're great dive men with Steph and I know curse point at times is like, so we're putting draymond in the corner. He's the stationary in the corner. Obviously ignoring him. So they run a unique style, but what they didn't have last season when they had wise men out there not knowing where to go and tell you gray who plays a unique style in itself that does not fit the warriors. They have guys this season that just know how to run how they want to run. And you're seeing that all come together with even Iguodala. I know he did play yesterday, but he's been back lately too, which stabilizes the second unit. And I mean, it is a really, really good matchup for them. Denver, but how they've looked makes you wonder how far they can go. Yeah, and it's really the question here because I'm always going to give them the benefit of the doubt because of the step part of it. But now when draymond looks like this in clay, it looks like this, but then I'll keep coming back to me like you kind of knew this was going to happen with Denver and once you've seen the players, but all right, this team isn't really that good. And the defensive stuff with jokic, although I think better but exposed last year in the playoffs, but better in the regular season part of it, you can see when they're getting the ball and they kind of swing it to the other side. And then there's an angle on the drive. Those guys couldn't be happier to have jokic standing under the rim. Like it's pretty funny how they was like, yeah, whatever. We don't care what we're going right at you every time. There's just nothing. There's no resistance there, right? I mean, have you seen some of that stuff? I don't know if it's even something touched on in some of the postgame stuff. But it's one thing to have spacing in a lane run. It's another thing to have spacing and no fear. No room protection. I mean, in Aaron Gordon, I mean, we don't need to get into an Eric Gordon conversation, but is he their second best player? And if he is, he's had a horrible series. On both ends, right? They're sagging off of them, and then he just doesn't do much. But to me, I'm already maybe I actually don't think it's unwise. I'm already looking at the other matchups, right? If it is Memphis, jaren Jackson's small ball center and they're out there and they got Dylan Brooks hounded some of these guys and Desmond bane and that is a.

"And he's figured that out. I give him credit for that. Four assists again to your point about his all around ability. And it's the off the dribble scoring that has really kind of offset the decline in three point shooting. If you put a smaller guy on him, he's much better this season, it just sort of whittling his way to the rim one on one than he was last season. So I have no problem with him being on the list. I would have no problem with him being in the top three. It just wasn't in my top 13. All right, I'll give you a guy on my list since we found when we didn't overlap on. Let's just get him out of the way quickly because we've already mentioned him for a second year player. I think tyrese Maxie has to be in consideration for the award straight up. And I can hear hollinger morning and groaning about it. But look, but look, he's up 9 and a half points a game. 30% from three to 42% from three and not on just wide open catch and shoot threes. He's pulling off the dribble. You go under on him, he's letting it fly. Four and a half assists the game up from two and I can hear you say, well, that's because he's playing 20 more minutes a game. And so of course his stats are going to go up. Fair, his scoring is actually down per 36 minutes. His assists are even per 36 minutes. I just don't care because to go from basically not quite afterthought, but a guy who was like, oh man, they threw him in a playoff series, randomly, and it kind of changed the series to, no, you're the third guy in a big three and you completely fit the bill playing 35 minutes a game to do that in your second year is just an absolutely mammoth accomplishment and I just think I get what hollinger and his ilk are saying. I just think he's got to be in the conversation. His improvement this season is one of the biggest stories in the NBA because it helped the sixers stay afloat while Simmons was out and their front office was navigating the Simmons situation. He gave them the wherewithal to wait and it gave them the confidence that if we trade a lot of stuff for James Harden, we got enough stuff left over to make a run at it because this guy is like a third star on our team. So I think he absolutely belongs and I know he's on your list too. He was next. He was listening. I listened to number 6 and again, those aren't real hard numbers except for my top three. Everything you said, of course, is exactly what I had a smile when you said his name. I spoke to tyreese and his dad when he was in the draft. And they were just looking for some guidance on maybe who played like, who what are some comparables that maybe they should talk about in meetings? And I've told this story maybe once before when someone's pod. And I told them I think you're a better scoring version of Kyle Lowry at this age. And at first, tyrese clearly didn't seem super enthused with that. And I explained myself as to what I saw in him that was similar to Kyle. And then I reminded him that Kyle Lowry's over $200 million in career earnings when he's done. And completely bought into it at that point. That would bring a smile to my face. How many 100 million? Multiple. Okay, all right. I'll take that comp. I just said, you know, your competitiveness, your fire, your confidence, your swagger. I've listened to people who play with Kyle and college talk about a swagger and a guy that just had a big ass, and that was about it. And yet, and that's what he's always brought. And I think tyreese has gotten to that at a young age, which Kyle did too if you remember, he was sharing time with my Conley, has it number three pick whatever. I think tyrese has an unbelievable future. And he's become a near elite offensive player and he's what 20 years old. And he's not a playable on D anymore. It used to be unplayable. And that's what he's made such a big jump. So yeah, he's I love John hollinger. That kind of improvement is not typical. It's an atypical jump and I respect him and reward him for that. Let's go to I'll take the lead and maybe this guy's in your top ten maybe. He's not as long as we're on the subject of atypical second year jumps. Maybe the FrontRunner for the award and definitely in my top ten, you mentioned that your whole list might be Memphis Grizzlies if you weren't careful. A Desmond bane, Desmond bane. I mean, plus 9 points per game. Has maintained his shooting almost exactly where it was last season in a much bigger role, and I know he spent the entire off season working with their coaches on pick and roll ball handling. On point guard play, he ran point for them in summer league. It was a huge part of their emphasis and development, not only and it's a big reason that they're 15 and two without John morant, which is crazy. Amazing. But it's also for, hey, when defenses load up on ja, we're going to need other guys who can create off the dribble who can catch and go and he's been excellent at that. And he's putting up 30 put up 30 last night. And again, if you had told people before, people loved Desmond bay and all the draftniks love doesn't mean, if you had told people before the season, he was going to be like a borderline all star averaging 18 a game and almost leading the league at three point shooting and looking this comfortable off the dribble. I think it's pick and rolls. I linked it up earlier today are like 12 or 13 per hundred possessions. You only it was at 5 or 6 last.

"Had to say it not right because you're also going to probably face his team in the first round if you make it that far. But then also going on to the Russell Westbrook thing and finding a potential trade in potentially having another star next season. Like you mentioned, I'm glad you brought up the video because I was going to reference it. We already did it for me. The Lakers got away from it. And I don't understand why the need to have we have to go get our star because regardless the whole point of getting Russell Westbrook was for, okay, when LeBron's off the floor or this happens or maybe just help alleviate the pressure of LeBron. LeBron's going to have the ball in his hands anyway. So like trading for Russell Westbrook and offloading coups to do a KCP mantra hero letting Alex Caruso walk for cap reasons and money. None of that made sense. And then if you go on all the way back to the championship roster, JaVale McGee walks, you don't think you could really afford him anyway. JaVale McGee walks. What am I missing? I'm guessing something. Danny Green, you trade him. But guess what? If you don't trade Danny Green, we get Desmond bane. Yay. I keep reminding me of that. You could have had Danny Green and Desmond, but yes, but at the time the trade made sense, most people were crediting the Lakers for making that move and gave sure. Looking back now. It hasn't worked out. Mother fatality said, it all caps. Trevor's hanging around with Matt too much because I, it was a quasi relationship style. And joke there. All right, and the Trevor, I decided, like, come on, trev. That was a rap brand. I love you guys. I gave you guys didn't join. We had a whole, this is all depressing that first half or so of the game was. A half time. We had a whole like 5 minute part of the show where people were just trying to guess my age is still Trevor decided to add fuel to the fire a little bit. So Russell Westbrook, this is coming in from our own Ryan ward just tweeted out that Russell Westbrook's presser lasted a minute and 30 seconds. The last one only lasted two minutes. I mean, that may not sound that should sound short no matter what most pressors are somewhere in the ten ish minute range, like 7 to ten minutes right in there. Sometimes a little bit longer depends. A minute and 30 seconds is he really did not want to talk. That's what that tells you. Said at the start announcer's yell are you ready? I think no. So when Bruce buffer, it gets on the mic, you say no, thank you, Bruce. Mauricio villa royal said the man oh man, this is brutal. That LeBron's frustration summarizes it all. There's no excuses to not match LeBron's energy and effort. If only we could do that, yeah. LeBron himself has had energy and effort issues at certain times. But again, he's 37. He's been carrying this team for much of the season. I think there's a reason why we've seen that sometimes. Is it frustrating? Sometimes when he stays behind the play, absolutely. Unfortunately, this team very much follows LeBron. If LeBron's low energy, the team's low energy and vice.

"Like Desmond Bain has reached the ceiling of what we thought Desmond bane would be in season two of his career. Dylan Brooks has reached the Pinnacle of what we thought Dylan Brooks could reach. If not exceeded that ceiling, given how good he is on defense, like the Anthony Melton was not very good in Phoenix and his immediately become a real difference maker off the bench for Memphis. All of these guys, they get better when they go to Memphis and I think that's a testament to the coaching staff to the front office. They draft the right kind of guys as well. I love the Memphis Grizzlies, just so, so much. Well, I was curious, you said apex and kind of the top. Do you think that bane is there? Or do you think that Bain, I'm curious? Bane and Brooks specifically, you think they much more growth plate is there for them. No, I think that there's, I don't know about Brooks. I think Brooks is probably tapped out at this point in terms of where he is. Yeah, like high level defender. The problem with him is that he's always going to be a iffy shot selection guy. He just doesn't have the vision and passing. I don't think to where he's going to be like a real difference maker. Where like the next level for him would be top 40 player in the leagues. He's probably a top 60 player top 70 player already, I think. Given the three point shooting, the defensive value and everything. He's in above average starter, right? Yeah. Something along that line. Desmond Bain, I think Desmond still is a little bit of ceiling. I think he's better with the ball than Dylan Brooks is. Like, I think that obviously is a 40% three point shooter. Defensively, he's always gonna have the inherent limitation of his wingspan, but he's so physically strong and I think that that's just really allows them to get into guy's space. And he's just like an elite character guy again, like he's gonna keep getting better. This is a guy that just works and works and works like crazy. I mean, I think there's more ceiling. I think that what we've seen during John morant's absence from him were like I think he's averaged like 18 points a game, something along those lines, like that's probably what his actual ceiling is on a good team, like when there is a job right next to him and there is a jaren Jackson next to him full time and all of that, but I mean if he gets 18 points a game playing as like a starter next to those guys, that's a fucking incredible piece to have for them. Yeah, it's funny that we were joking about this on Twitter a little bit the other night when he went crazy against Dallas as the team, which they love it when Desmond bang goes crazy against them. It's just epic heartache for them. But Desmond loves going crazy against them. They passed on him and he knows that they passed on. I'm like he said that in an interview that the fact that they took Josh green over him was motivation for him. Right. And all those teams, that one, that one, I'll never understand how he fell as far as he did, but I do think that the on ball creating his own shot. We saw some of that in summer league. It was sort of jarring to be like, oh man, if he has this frontier on his on his radar that he could go in this direction, that's a pretty amazing player..

"The fact that you're finally getting some notice? Yeah, I mean, obviously it's nice to, you know, get some recognition. But, you know, at the end of the day, I mean, like, I've said before, we still got almost 60 games left. So it's early for all that. You know, at the end of the season, if I'm in Iran and receive the award, I'll be extremely thankful. You know, right now I'm just focused on wedding games and continuing to get better. Does you talk with the wisdom and the grounding of like a veteran, which maybe shouldn't be surprising in that you were a four year guy in college. Do you think this benefited you on some level? I mean, I know that sometimes from a draft perspective from GM's perspective and scouts, they look a little suspiciously on guys who stay longer in school because they think well that guy, you know, there's a reason he didn't come out yet. It could be a double edged sword though. And coming out after that much time, you obviously do arrive more mature. Where do you think that has benefited you? I mean, all across the board, I mean, with my nutrition, I mean, just learn how to be a prostitution, sleep habits, you know, study habits, the way that I study the game, where I approach the game, my work habits, you know, I felt like I came into the league and had a lot of those things in place. You know, so now it's just about taking it to another level and, you know, learning the NBA game, the NBA system. You know, I mean, I think the four years in college, I don't know what type of player I would have been. If I were to let record two years three years, I would have had an opportunity. I'm honestly glad that I stayed for all four. I'm sure it's been written about, but what was that? Like were there moments after a year or two year three? Had you considered coming out sooner? What made you decide to stay? Yeah, no question. I mean, after my sophomore year, I led the big 12 and 3% edge and we went to the tournament. I think I was like 12 or 13 twice a game and you know I thought I was ready. I mean, I just went to the USA camp for the year before and I saw the crop guys that were brought into the league and you know I feel like there was a role for me in the so you know I asked my coach like what do you think and it was like, I think you need to come back next year you're gonna be a junior and now be the time to do it. So I watch a year comes around and I tested the waters and you know I was saying around two way you know nothing was looking like I wasn't necessarily gonna get guaranteed money for sure, so if I'm not getting guaranteed money that I need to be called back to school and I get back to school, you know, develop my game a little bit to some people that I can do, but you know I know I can do and the rest is history. What do you think you gained most by tacking on that extra year or two? Where is your game? Where was it on draft night that it wouldn't have been if you had come out one year or two years earlier? Yeah, I mean, I was a pretty much four spacer. You know, role player, my first three years. And my last year, I was on the ball. I was coming off the screen. I was just more complete player. And you know, it's showing now. I mean, I feel like, you know, a complete player now, obviously, I can still improve. Get a lot better and areas, but I'm working towards being a complete player at this level of love. It's interesting because we know everybody's got their own path. Everybody's got to do it their own way and maybe what works for one guy won't work for her next. But I mean, your story is one that I think really does show that like for some players, the longer college career does pay dividends. Whatever you've missed out on the front end in terms of obviously contract, you're gaining in terms of your ability to step right in and play a really important role on what looks like a playoff team, you know, very early in your career. Yeah. I mean, like I said, I can't understand how much our college is there. So I'm super thankful. I got paper because Dixon, you know, tough minded coach that, you know, telling me up and got me ready for 82 games, schedule. And what did it mean in your rookie year to be able to get a taste of the playoffs right off? I mean, you guys had to play your way in. It's looking like you guys might just, you know, you might just get there straight up as a playoff team this time. Did that have a value that like a lot of guys they get bigger roles or whatever else on teams that maybe aren't aren't going to the platform they're going back to the lottery, but you got to actually get meaningful games at the end too. Did that did you get a sense of like what that means for your growth? No question I'm hitting that that's what you worked for. You know, I mean, you don't work for, you know, games and early November obviously those games are important, but the goal of every organization at some point is to win a championship. And you know, obviously getting that black experience in my first year of playing a team like Utah, specifically, who has such unique style has such a good crowd, good atmosphere. You know, I feel like I was really thrown into the fire and it paid huge dividends for my growth. A couple more before I get you out of here, we're recording this on a Friday Saturday night. I believe is the Zach Randolph Jersey retirement, big moment for the franchise and for the city. Do you know do you know Zack at all? And do you have any favorite moments or anything about, you know, just watching him as a fan growing up? What does Zach Randolph mean to you, mean do you think to the grizzlies? Yeah, he grew up only hour and a half, you know, where I grew up from school. Before I knew him as a grizzly legend, I knew him as a, you know, I do for Marriott Indian. It was tough as nails, you know? And obviously he brought that here and you know, out of historic career and has a great legacy and I'm super happy for him. He deserves it, of course. Thankful for everything he's done for, you know, Memphis and for our organization. You know, it's going to be a special night. I forgot, right, right. You guys have the Indiana connection. Has he been a guy who's been in your ear over the years? Has he been an adviser or mentor to you at all? Not too much. I mean, I know of him, and we've had conversations here and there, but we're not super close like that. But yeah, I mean, I just look into him more from standpoint of his, you know, from where I'm from and along career, the yeah, and he's a great guy. It's so funny, Zack is one of those guys who, like, he is just a teddy bear of a person, but obviously he is, he is a different guy on the court and I think he's he's one of those guys I think it's fun like the way that fans got to understand him over the years that like this is a guy who clearly big hearted as well as obviously tough as nails on the court. So that'll be a fun night for all you guys before I let you go. You are in the city known for barbecue. Do you have a go to spot? I mean, you can't go wrong with the barbecue out here. I mean, I've been central barbecue, of course..

"Dylan Brooks. You know, I feel like he really took me under his wing. You know, when I first got here, I didn't both kind of honor all guys. You know, he is there out there who scratched and clawed and you know he's made a nice name for himself and you lost the way to make it a nice career for himself. So obviously I looked up to him. I mean, he was saying some of her things about him. You know, during the pre draft process, not super athletic, doesn't have a great week's ban, you know, and it seems to be working. I just fired from what's the most important thing or the thing that resonated most that he said to you that you think about the most or go back to. It's just hard, just, you know, I mean, I kinda can't love and was comforting that same cloth, but you know that's one thing that you can never lose sight of. I don't even want you to lose that. You can lose everything. You got to go out there and play with the edges and every night. So as I mentioned, you were 30th in the 2020 draft class. I was looking up everybody in that class just ranking by scoring this season. Your 5th among everybody in the 2020 draft class is scoring right now. The only guys from your draft class who are have a higher scoring average than you this season or Anthony Edwards, who, of course, was the number one overall pick. Cole Anthony, who was 15th, LaMelo Ball, who was, of course, third and tyrese maxi, who was 21st. Were you aware of that? Are you paying attention to those things and what does it mean to you that you are, you know, if we did the redraft already? I think probably you're in a little different slot. So what's it mean that you are scoring at a level with those guys? I mean, you know, it's good. I mean, I put the work in. You know, the times been put in and now just, you know, there is also I mean, I try not to get too much of it as this, that's that. I mean 'cause you know, obviously the season is a roller coaster. You know, it's obviously down. All throughout it, you know, so I just try to keep my best foot forward and stick to the ground. No doubt, you're also third in three pointers made in your draft class behind only Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball. And of course, those guys have the ball in their hands all the time and get a lot more opportunities. So it's really remarkable. Did you expect this kind of success and this soon? I mean, who knows? I wasn't gonna say I didn't expect it. I wasn't gonna say I didn't expect it. I mean, like I said, I mean, I've always been a guy that kind of just rolled with a bunch of, you know? So whether things are going good, things are going bad, you know, I'm gonna keep my saying attitude and approach and, you know, days are going up. You know, and I'm thankful that things are going well, but you know, I'm not going to say that I didn't work for it, you know, it's the same time. So, you know, often continue to keep working and hopefully there's more success to come. So does you came into the league at obviously one of the strangest moments in not just NBA history, but in recent history, human history with the pandemic. So you come in in the midst of that, you're playing almost an entire season with no fans and buildings. And the reason I bring it up is I think a lot of people were not sure what to make of last season from whether it was young guys like you where it's like, oh, well he's shooting really well and yet he shot while in college too, but it's different. There's no fans and buildings. And then we come into this season scoring has been down early on shooting has been down. People are like, they're blaming the new ball. They're saying maybe it's because fans are back in buildings. There's all this stuff going on, but you seem completely unaffected by all that. Have we maybe just put a place too much emphasis on all of that? And tell me about the ball too because I am curious. So a lot of guys, you know, do seem to be struggling even set on Twitter the other day. He thought the ball has affected guys. So how have you not been affected? It's just basketball at the end of the day. I mean, I grew up, you know, playing with basketballs, I had no skin on them. You know, playing on them outside in a park or whatever the case may be any basketball league of fine with this going into. So I mean, I never really wanted to complain about a wall or fans in the building. I mean, all that doesn't matter, I mean, we're out there to play basketball. Obviously, the fans are, you know, big part of what we do in a big part of the NBA, but if you're worried about a few fans in the building and you got your priorities to no doubt, it is interesting though to see because I think you can go across the league. You can see for sure, right? Like it's affected, guys. Yeah. The numbers have been down, but you know, I would just say that's just early season. You know, shooting walls. I mean, whatever the case may be trying to find a legs, guys a new role teams. You know, who knows, but I mean, I think water always finds this level. You know whether it's now or whether it's towards the end of the season I think that you know those numbers will start to come up and even themselves. What was it like coming in as a rookie in the midst of a pandemic with no fans and buildings, everything else? Like you have one of the more your draft classes one of the more unique, welcome to the NBA, you know, years that there could be. What are you going to remember about that season? I mean, I was like, now that I've played a season, you're a part of the season with fans in the building and I know what the NBA is like. I mean, it's really honestly crazy when we went through last year and you know from the testing to the no fans and the building, I mean it was one of a kind. I mean something that hopefully I'll never have to experience again. But yeah, I mean that season was nuts. I mean, it's hard for me to put in words how crazy it was. And then I mean, the guys that read the bubble, I mean, they tell me about that all the time and how lucky I am and I'm just, you know, being stuck in the bubble. And I mean, it's just been a crazy year and a half. You know, for sports in general, all around the world. Yeah, yeah, let's hope that we don't ever have to experience that one again. Or anything even remotely like it. You're getting a lot of buzz for most improved player. Obviously there's a lot of season yet to go, but you know how we are in the media. We love obsessing about awards after like the first week of this season. And we're now more than a quarter way in. How are you feeling like as a guy who you're kind of used to like your persona is like, okay, I'm overlooked. I get it. You know, I think you only got one division division one scholarship offer, which was to TCU where you played. Now you're getting all this buzz for most improved player. Does that mean anything to you? Do you appreciate.

"I mean, you know, last year was more that stuff for me, you know, obviously. You know, I was out here trying to learn and trying to grow as much as possible and I'm still trying to learn. I'm still trying to grow, but you know, now I mean it's already the same. We're going up against stars. You know, night at night out. So, you know, I just looked at it as another game. I mean, I received my family and friends or hit me up. You know, talking of the day and talking about being a Lakers and playing well against Lakers and stuff like that, but you know like I stayed up before we approached the game the same way every time and you know whatever happens happens. Does LeBron say anything or do any of those guys say anything to you along the way, you got any nice words of encouragement in the or just you know a kind of attaboy kind of thing as the game goes? Nah, man, that was truly business, you know? I mean, LeBron, AB autumn, guys, they walking off the court. Actually, you know, before the games even over, I mean, so, you know, there were no words exchanged. And that's cool with me. Yeah. I was watching that game. There was definitely a Laker fan contingent there. How noticeable is that and is that, you know, how do you guys take that? I know the Lakers look, their fans are everywhere. They're kind of, you know, universal team, but how do you guys take it when you hear that big of a fan contingent for the opponent? Yeah, I mean, like you said, that's part of it. I mean, it's the Los Angeles Lakers around like the damn Harlem blow drivers. Everybody call they're gonna have a crowd, but obviously I mean, I would like for our city to be able to come out and support a little bit more, but you also got to understand the area. I mean, we've been hit hard with COVID over here. So everybody's still trying to get back on their feet from that. But, you know, in due time, the arenas and the stats will be packed again. I'm sure. No question. And yeah, and obviously, you know, you guys are kind of early in this new era, right? Like the grit and grind era kind of wound down a couple years ago. There's probably that, you know, that time between errors where fans are kind of getting used to you guys again and I mean, the way you guys are playing now and obviously pretty exciting young team and job will be back soon. I'm sure that the fan support will kind of increase with that. There was another moment last night. The other thing I noticed during the broadcast, I think brevin knight at one point called you referred to as the flyby king, are you aware of this? Yeah, I've heard that a few times. I think I understood what he meant in the moment, but how did you become the flyby king? I mean, just kind of like my pet move, I mean, teams are, you know, scouting out around me off the three point line. So, you know, and they're flying at me. You know, trying to run out three point line, just go up a little shot fake that I'm fly by and still get my video off. So that was when I heard him say it the first time that was Anthony Davis flying by so that that's a lot of size and limbs flying by and you hit that you did hit that three. How has that been for you guys because you came into this league? That was the one thing that everybody knew for sure you had in your game was shooting. And then the criticism behind that or the critique, especially during pre draft scouting as well, he's not going to create a lot. He's not going to do. So teams are obviously going to try to take that away. So tell me about how that adjustment has been for you because you're still shooting 40% from three. I think you're closer to 48% during this last 7 game stretch. Have you had to find a way to keep the space for your shot as the league has adjusted to you? Yeah, I mean, you can see the round up my game. You know, I mean, I feel like that's made things a little bit easier for me. You know, being able to play on the wall, you're not laid off the wall and actions away from the ball. You know, has helped me a lot. You know, open things up for me now. You know, I hear the defense in more ways than one. So I mentioned you know that pre draft products process and the critiques that came behind that. You're taking 30th overall. I think draft the prognostications had you anywhere from late first to in the second round, did you pay much attention to any of that? Do you still remember some of the critiques? Are you somebody who thinks about that stuff in terms of how it motivates or shapes the way you approach the game in the league? It doesn't change the way that I approach or anything like that, but I definitely remember what they were saying. You know what I and everybody forget what they were saying and what I hope they're looking back on and I got a long career both their accomplished a lot of things. You know, all still remember what they had to say. That's just a type of person type of player I am. One of the ones that bothered you or the ones that you thought were the most off base. All of them. I love them. I'm looking at one here. This is my colleague Jeremy Wu from Sports Illustrated. So I'm throwing him right under the bus here. This was his summation of you last year. While bane doesn't come with a ton of upside, he's physically maxed out and isn't a great mover athletically. He might be a pretty useful role player right away. He's a dangerous shooter with underrated passing skills and a strong friend that should help him stay on the floor defensively, despite not being very quick, laterally, and it goes on a little bit more. And then talks about your wingspan. I think those are probably all the same. This is not a given Jeremy some crap here. But I mean, there's everybody, I think all the draft analysts kind of had a similar summation of you. Is there a part of that that actually where you're like, yeah, okay, I get that, but here's what you guys are missing. Yeah, no question, I mean, no offense to Jeremy or any of those writers, but you know, it's a lot different when you're on the court, you know what I mean, it's easy to type and write something and going off of what you see on the film or what you heard from people, but you give it to me. Those lines, I mean you can't measure guys hard and can't measure how they prepare for the game when they do behind the scenes. So all that stuff is just for, you know, online clicks and media, you know, I'm really trying to pay too much attention to that stuff. What have you already gotten better at? Like in terms of, you know, on day one you arrive, you had certain things that you knew were gonna be your go tos. What if you already do you think added that you're most proud of? I would say defense you know, I mean early on that was something that I really struggled with. I mean, the speed of the game, the athleticism of the players, you know, now with the Dylan Brooks out, you know, it turns to me, to match players. So, you know, I feel like I've came along the way and I can still continue to and in terms of rounding out your offensive game, you know, if people were wondering about your playmaking ability or you're just your handle, are those all areas of emphasis for you? Are there specific things that you're trying to make more into a strength at this stage? Yeah, I mean, just like being on play off at DHL's plan to drag, you know, I feel like I've always been a good cutter this shooter. I became better finisher and I'm trying to continue to become better finisher. You know, moving forward. I just tightened up my handle. So I can really play on the ball. You know, first in his stretches, but yeah, I mean, I'm working on everything. I mean, I'm a young player on my second year in the league. I'm trying to get better every day. Who's your vet? Who's been the guy who's been the most important voice in your ear among that roster?.

"He is Desmond Bain, second year guard for the Memphis Grizzlies. The red hot grizz. They've won 6 of 7 all since John morant went down with a knee injury. They just beat the Lakers with LeBron and Russ NAD all in the court does bane had 23 points in that win, including a dagger three down the stretch phenomenal game from him. The grizz are playing great D, they're getting great production from everyone else and in fact, despain himself since ja went down, is averaging 18 and a half points, 5 and a half rebounds, two and a half assists and shooting nearly 48% on three. Bane, if you recall, was 30th in the 2020 draft. And in that draft class he is now 5th in scoring. He's turning into a really nice player and a great story. We will get to that in just a moment before we do a quick reminder. Please rate review, subscribe to the crossover wherever you get your podcasts, check us out on the YouTube feed as well just search for Sports Illustrated podcasts. We are there. And be sure to hit me with all your feedback on Twitter at Howard Beck. Okay, my conversation with Desmond Bain is coming up next. So stick around. This is the crossover. An NBA show hosted by Sports Illustrated's Chris mannix and Howard back. It's a whole new level for you and me, Chris. This relationship. Like and subscribe for the best weekly NBA content. These two are capable of. What does that mean? Could be the best duo ever. I don't see how you can beat that. Here they are. Chris mannix, and Howard back. Now very pleased to be joined by Desmond Bain, Dez. How are you? Welcome. Good, good. Thank you for having me. Thanks for joining me. I know I'm catching you right after what was going to be an off day that's not an off day. You guys just beat the Lakers and you've won 6 of 7. Why is coach bringing you in on the off day? After you beat the Lakers, I think like you guys should just get like, I don't know the next three days off. That's the grizzly mentality, man. I mean, when loser draw, we're going to keep working. That sounds about right. But what I would expect, right from the grizz and grind franchise. And I actually I want to ask you that because this winning streak that you guys are on are winning 6 of 7 all since you lost jaw. It's been about defense. It's been about a bunch of guys who are, you know, kind of overachiever types like yourself is grit and grind still kind of the mentality there. We are obviously far beyond the Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph, Mike Conley era, is that still as much of a theme there as it's ever been? I mean, I would say so. I mean, I would say green grass been a part of my mentality. You know, my whole life, you know, from the way I was raised to, you know, my basketball career, and then, you know, you come here and we got some guys, you know, we're overlooked a bit. You know, I mean, Dylan Brooks plays several years in college, John morant. You know, start out and Mary stay, we got a lot of guys that have just been around the block and we carry that chip on our shoulder for sure. It's a really interesting thing because I don't think anybody sets out to put together a team that way, but then you start finding these commonalities and sometimes there is a theme and there definitely is with your group and I think there was with the prior grizzlies group. Is it talked about Dez or is it an unspoken thing that you guys were all kind of overlooked in your own way? And even you mentioned it. He was second overall pick, but he had been overlooked for much of his, you know, you know, come up up until that point, is it actually a spoken thing that you guys talk about with each other is just understood. Yeah, I would say it's more understood. I mean, it's something that doesn't really have to be brought up. You know, with our group, we don't really need a lot of extra motivation and things. It's pretty internal. You know, so I would say it's kind of an unspoken thing, but one thing that, you know, that you know that you're going to get with us is, you know, a battle. We're going to play hard and play together. That's for sure. So this stretch without jaw, he goes down with the knee. Now he's in health and safety protocols, Dylan Brooks is in health and safety protocols. First of all, I mean, if you talk to those guys, how they feel and how they do and I don't know if they were symptomatic or not, but how are you guys doing? Nah, I mean, we're good. I mean, everybody's good spirits are good. We're in a good place. And just the fact that you guys kind of went on this winning binge after ja went down, was tell me about how the discussion goes about, okay, look, you know it's going to be probably a couple of weeks. Is the driver of so much of what you guys do? What has enabled you guys to kind of pull together and obviously exceed expectations for this stretch? I mean, next man up mentality. I mean, we've had that. You know, for the whole time that I've been here with the grizzlies, I mean, regardless of who's in a rotation, who's either rotation, the standard and the way we approach the games don't change. And it's obviously carried us to watching winds. I mean, we just keep preparing the same way. And keep working to get better and, you know, you live with the result go out there and lay it on the line and obviously want 6 to the last 7, hopefully not to keep it wrong. You've been a huge part of this streak. You're scoring in particular your three point shooting, you hit basically the dagger three that sealed it up against the Lakers last night. They were at full strength. They had LeBron, they had Anthony Davis, they had Russell Westbrook just a couple years ago you were still a fan of the game watching these guys. Give me a sense of, I know you've been in the league for a year plus now, but is there still a little bit of a sense of that holy crap? I'm on the court looking across at LeBron AD Russ Carmelo. What was that like for you last night, and especially like I said, being able to come up big in the win against those guys. I mean, you know, last year was more that stuff for me, you know, obviously..

"Defense picked up their intensity in the second half, and that helped to force turnovers and it helped to jump start their offense as well. We know they can be better defensively, what's their ceiling on that end of the floor? Certainly not what last year's team was or the season before, either, but I think they can be better there. The question is consistency. Can they do it on a consistent basis? So far that answer has been no. But again, I don't want to be too negative because tonight we got this is literally been the first kind of kickback and relaxed fourth quarter, at least the bulk of the fourth quarter that we've seen from the Lakers all season. All season. This is the first one, and we're what? 22 games in now? 23 games? 23 games in now. And this is the first one that the Lakers have really been able to cruise to a big dominant victory. So let's not lose sight of that, but yes, the defense is still. It's still a concern. And hopefully it's something that they can fix. I think part of it is intensity. It's just an effort, essentially, and part of it is also how the personnel was put together in terms of they don't have a lot of stand out individual defenders, and that's bled into their defensive schemes. But again, that's a longer topic for another day. Jerry O back said THT for Desmond Bain. I like Jerry. I like Desmond bane a lot for the Memphis grizzly. I don't think they're looking to move him anytime soon. He was my target, had the Lakers kept their pick rather than trade in the den of Schroeder deal. He was the guy I wanted to see wind up with the Lakers. You guys have known on the scene on the channel. I've interviewed him a few times. Great, great kid. Works extremely hard. I thought he would have been a great fit with the Lakers, but I don't think the grizzlies are looking to move on from him at this point. He's been great for them. All right, let's get into the 360 awards. So of the stars. Obviously, LeBron James was out and we still need to talk about that. But of the Lakers stars, who is the best? Who is the best tonight? Was that Anthony Davis? Or was it Russell Westbrook? Chat, let me know what you guys are thinking, coming in from Twitter from YouTube from Facebook, fire it off. Who was the best who deserves the 360 award tonight? Was it AD? Or was it Russ? Looking down right now, I've.
