Older White Voters Helped Trump Win; Now They're Up For Grabs

"Republican voters against Trump is Webcasting testimonials from older Republicans, voters like Joseph in Florida who say they're switching to Biden. It's okay that we voted for Donald Trump in the first election. We now seen what he conduce and especially what he can't do pull suggest more seniors are feeling this way. So NPR reached out to a random group of older voters who cast ballots for Trump in 2016. Many told us they are deeply troubled by the president's behavior. Marty Stan, Go is 77 years old and lives near Jacksonville, Florida He's not exactly the most trustworthy individual. Nor, in fact, does he always tell the truth. I definitely will throw out things that are absolutely live. And here's Doris Harrington. She's 82 lives in Des Moines, Iowa. I don't wantto judge other people, but I really don't think it's character is great, you know? Moreover, they're not my morals. We heard this again and again. A lot of seniors who backed Trump four years ago say they're really tired of his tweets. They hate his use of profanity and many rate him poorly on his handling of the Corona virus. But NPR heard something else from these voters. A reminder just how hard it is Thies days toe actually change People's votes. Marty Stan, go in Florida who thinks Trump's a liar. He's not switching to Joe Biden right now, at least For Trump. Doris Harrington in Des Moines, agrees. For all her misgivings about Trump. She's actually enthusiastic about a second term Trump even though his character might be bad. He is Supporting religious freedom, religious rights right to life. The Democratic Party are not a lot of older Trump voters told NPR. They life Joe Biden, but they think his party has moved too far to the left. This is a voting bloc that's far more white and rural than the country as a whole. And many told NPR they're troubled by Democrats embrace of the Black lives matter Movement Robin Tunnel who's 64 lives in Midlothian, Texas. Told us she thinks Trump is unpresidential and a bully, but he shares her views on race. I just don't understand this kneeling for the flag. I think that that is just Horrible and he would never do that. Trump would never do that. NPR did find some older white trump voters who say his behaviour has caused them to waver. They're giving Biden a serious look. Michael Barbone, who's on the edge of this senior voting group at age 59 lives in Odessa, Florida today. I would vote for Donald Trump. But the strength of my confidence is waiting, so it could definitely change. Pollster Robert Griffin says the data doesn't suggest a huge shift among seniors who voted for Trump. But he thinks it's clear there is enough softening of support to put Trump's reelection at risk. The reality that had happened appears to be confirmed by a lot of different pollsters. That's really problematic for him. But the polling data and NPR's interviews suggest this is one key group of voters still in play, still reachable by both sides with just over two months to election Day.

"Because we like to do that we do so carries parents were Nancy and denny. And they fell in love with Nancy's just nineteen years old and then he was twenty one. They got married in nineteen seventy then in nineteen, seventy, two, their son Adam was born. Followed by Carey in nineteen seventy four. Nancy chose Adams name. So then he was to choose Carrie's name. Nancy wanted to name their daughter Kelly. Yes but after Kerry, well, yeah I guess Danny had seen this young girl singer on the Johnny Carson show I think it was really liked her thought she was talented and like the name Kerry. But then he changed the spelling to see a R. I Which I guess. Kind of. Plagued Carey in her youth because everyone was always misspelling her name. You gotta be careful with that. Right you do and this is before there were so many made up spellings like there are now me now you know that they're going to have special spellings of the kids names a lot of the time whatever whatever name you pick. Yeah exactly. The double E. The L. G. H. You know. All different variations, but anyway, Kerry had a hard time with people. Either mispronouncing or misspelling her name because of that. These were young kids when they got married they didn't have a lot of money at least early on. Danny work two jobs. And then finally he got a good paying position as an insurance actuary. This folks actually make pretty good money. Nancy was a skilled secretary. She is always organized and efficient. But like a lot of young marriages, it didn't last. So and Adam was four and can carry with eighteen months. Old Appearance got divorced. Adam maintain a close relationship with his father. Kerry was young when the divorce happened. So she was closer to her mother. But then he was a good father and carry visited him often as she got older. In nineteen seventy nine Nancy had been on her own for three years and it had been nine years since she had spoken to her high school sweetheart mark rainy. Nancy and mark were children together and their parents were really good friends. So in their parents would get together when they were kids Nancy and mark would play together along with their siblings. Now, once she was in junior high nancy began to notice mark romantically and he was one year ahead of her in school, but they continued to see each other. Nancy was shy and mark was the class clown and they were a couple from the time. She was fourteen until she completed high school. They used to go out on double dates go to concerts dances the whole nine yards. Yard then she met Denny and dump them right or are they broken up before I know of it was that simple? I mean, they attended different colleges. So mark was an art major in Missouri and Nancy went to business school in des, Moines Iowa, and that's where she met Denny. So I wouldn't say she dumped mark. You know that kind of thing happens that does yeah. So by the summer of Nineteen seventy-nine, Nancy had been a single mom for a while. Hands-on curriculum teaches kids about mosquitoes

"For many people mosquitoes aren't just a nuisance. But for some young people in des, Moines Iowa. They've also become a source of fascination. They think a lot about well. What happens if this mosquito larva is in cold water, or if it's in really hot water, or what happens if this adult female mosquito can't find a shady spot to rest in, it's awesome. What kinds of questions emerge lyric? Bartholomeo is an entomologist at the University of Wisconsin Madison. In two, thousand sixteen. She began working with Catherine Bruna of Iowa State University to create a hands on curriculum about mosquito, biology and public health. They've used it in a summer camp an after school program. They even crafted lessons for us at home during the covid nineteen pandemic. The lesson spark kids, curiosity and get them thinking about topics such as how global warming effects, mosquitoes and spread of diseases such as the and malaria. The next generation of kids that are coming up are going to be the ones that are forced to face climate change really had on. So she says by encouraging kids critical thinking skills there, helping nurture tomorrow, scientists and problem solvers.

The Evansdale Murders

"Longtime listeners of this fine program. We'll know that one of the tactics I would certainly use in any of these investigations is what I like to call the old pervert roundup and that is exactly what law enforcement did. Investigators tracked down approximately ten registered sex offenders living in Evansdale and all were cleared by police but according to CNN there were two hundred registered sex offenders in a ten mile radius is scary stuff now the town of Waterloo has did. He make sure that there wasn't a prison I I did. The town of Waterloo has one registered sex offender for every two hundred and thirty six residents for comparison purposes. Evansdale has a registered sex offender for every four hundred and eighty four residents over all the DCI says. It looked into over three hundred sex offenders to date throughout the investigation. Investigators had a hard time figuring out. Exactly how the girls were abducted. Where the bikes were left was quite far from their house and was not in an area. Cars could travel further. The girl sense had seem to lead into the woods. How a Predator or predators managed to get control of two girls silently and sight unseen in broad daylight. But we've we've talked about this many times normally. I'M GONNA guess that it's by threat of violence. I show you a gun. I show you a knife. You're a little kid is not gonna be that hard for me to You know most little kids are not going to think. Hey I could take off running right now or maybe I can scream or I could do something. You're going to see that gun and once that threat is made now that perpetrators in control. Yeah and what you have to wonder about two is do you take that a step further and say were they lured to a vehicle perhaps by someone they knew and trusted and there was no reason for them to scream and run away right. That's your second option. The other thought to had they been grab from another location. Perhaps a long road alongside a road. Which would make sense. And then the bikes left by their doctor on the trail and the dogs are just mistaken or confused while we talked about this a little off the record was the idea that what if the perpetrator had a truck or had A truck with maybe a cap on it where he got the girls got control the girls there now in his vehicle a he has the their bikes but now he's afraid that once he takes off that maybe somebody sees the bikes in the back of his truck. Here's the other thing to consider as well staying along the idea that it was a stranger abduction. Could we have a situation where they were somewhat targeted meaning? Had someone been watching the two girls as we said? This bike ride was pretty routine. They were out riding together often and I would imagine it would be roughly about the same time of day so somebody put together a carefully planned attack a snatch and grab of these two girls especially if they were following him and then followed them all the way to the lake that might have presented the opportunity. The perpetrator was looking for there. Were a rash of child. Abduction attempts throughout Iowa in two thousand twelve the following reports appeared in various media publications. And I'll kind of go through these one at a time. Captain you just kind of jump in where you see fit may nineteenth two thousand twelve th authorities say they were looking for a man suspected in the attempted abduction of three girls on the west side of Perry Iowa. Perry police say the man stopped his car about eight. Pm Friday and asked the Girls Ages. Eight and nine for directions to a convenience store he then tried to get the girls into the car asking for them to show him the way. Show him the directions. Police say the girls ran to a neighbor's house thankfully on June sixth of that same year. Metro police are teaming up with following a string of attempted child abductions in the Des Moines Iowa area. No this is like one hundred and twenty five miles away from Evansdale but I wanna go through some of these as we as we can hear the most recent of these attempts happened in Pleasant Hill on May twenty third of that year. Police say a man in A. Suv tried to lure a young girl into his vehicle in the same article. They're talking about walkie. Police were investigating an incident. That happened around the same date. There were two girls. They say they were followed by an SUV. In June parents and four city Iowa were notified of two abduction attempts and one of them. The driver of a Tan panel work style van stopped three children on bicycles on North Eighth Street and told them he was going to get them. The children ran away and the driver drove off. Seems like we need another stranger danger campaign through this country. I mean with all these creeps and all these pieces of shit to teach these kids one. Stay away run away. Run to the nearest house yell for help. Well what I find interesting in these situations is when you do have some a child or children who actually go missing and then the thought is abduction. You'll see these little stories in the newspapers in the local newspapers and they are just that they are little tiny stories because they don't know much about the offender they don't really fully know what the offender was attempting to do the actual crimes. They were attempting to carry ow. But it's scary stuff and they're really just delivering a little short warning to the community and to the parents in the area. What happens once you have a child who actually goes missing these stories all start to cycle back through the news because now you have people making connections and you're going alright. There's a shark in the water and he's over here swimming around in this area and look try to get somebody here and try to get somebody there In the same article captain there are going all the way back to march of that year. Where say the Police Department investigated a possible attempt to abduct a ten year? Old Boy. The boy who was in front of his home said he was approached by an Asian male roximately fifty years old with a thin face. The suspect was driving an older grey van possibly with I'll license plates. The man reportedly tried to lure the boy into his van after asking for directions to a church whether these attempts could have been the same person who took Elizabeth and lyric is almost certainly something that police in evansdale would have been. Considering at the time on the four month anniversary of the disappearance a letter appeared in the newspaper and it read to whom it may concern. We would use your name but we don't know who you are or maybe we do. Maybe you are someone who knows the girls. Maybe you're someone who just acted upon impulse. Maybe you had planned to take them. We don't know because we don't know who you are but we can sort of imagine that you must not have had the things you needed to grow up feeling safe and loved because only someone who hurts inside would hurt another person in their family. We've all heard the saying hurt. People hurt people. We believe this to be true. We are so sorry for what happened to you when you were growing up. Certainly all children do not receive all the love and care they deserve. Some are even abused by those who are supposed to have taken care of them. When that happens it is very wrong. Taking the girls from us has caused much pain pain for them pain for us and our families since the time you took them. Maybe you've wondered more than a few times how you could ever make it right how to be a hero. Not a monster. Things probably look pretty hopeless for a good outcome. We want you to know that we are praying for you to do the right thing by releasing the girls everyone wins even you the person who took them imagine how it will feel to? Have everyone remember that you were the one person and all the missing children cases the one person who cared enough to let the girls go you will not be remembered as the one who took the girls but as the one who let them come home? Our lives have not been the same since July thirteenth. Please let our girls come home to us. Do the right thing be a hero sincerely and signed by both of the families Wa- and then we're going to learn that that's not an option anymore to return the girls because the girls would be found. Yeah this takes place. On December fifth of that same year two thousand and twelve the family. They get the phone call that they were really hoping not to get. The family was told that two bodies had been found and at that time they believe them to be. The girl's three hunters found two small corpses in seven bridges. Wildlife Park and brimmer county north of Evansdale. This was a totally off the grid. One hundred sixty six acre wildlife area about twenty two miles from Myers Lake twenty two miles from where the bikes were found The area was not one that someone would just stumble upon. It was frequented mostly by hunters. Atv riders fishermen. You know outdoor people. This was a the type of park that you just take your kids for a hike and this was you said more for hunters and fishermen. Atv riders into kind of clue. Everybody in that's not from that area. When I see these types of statements it really really puts it into perspective for me. What kind of place? What kind of area we're talking about. This is also an area where people would drive and dump appliances. You know how you see. Things that are just dumped that are unwanted wanted. They have no other idea of how to get rid of them right. They just dump these appliances out in the middle of nowhere so and this is also a place that pretty much only the locals dough about you want to know about it. If you weren't from the area I mean you could find it on a map. But as I said it's it's very much like you just described it's only going to be frequented by people that are specifically intending to go to that area for the purpose of hunting or fishing

Opening Act - Rumors in Rock

"First false rumor. Did you ever hear the rumor about Keith? Moon driving a Rolls Royce into a hotel pool. I've heard a lot of stories about Keith. Moon well. He is the quintessential rock and roll guy and bad boy he definitely collected Nazi memorabilia. He may have bitten. Steve McQueen's Hog and blew up his drums win. The WHO played on the smothers brothers. Comedy Hour. I cannot wait to do his episode I am. I have like four books based on. Keith Moon I am. I am locked and loaded. I Love Keith. He is my soul. Well so those things may be true however there was a rumor that he drove a Rolls Royce into a pool at the Holiday Inn in Flint Michigan on his twenty. First Birthday. This is not true. According to Pete Townsend. The story is actually a combination of two different stories. That has become one not true rumor. So Keith Moon. In one of the stories like one of the incidents he left the Hamburg off of a car and it rolled into a pool which was under construction and to not have any water in hit home. Which would be worse though driving? Dr Into a pool with water or driving a car into a pool without water but he didn't drive the car into that. I'm just like either one either or I'm just saying like it just rolled in on its own. Which would do more damage I think you're pretty much screwed either way fair enough. The cars a loss of it goes near the pool. Yeah Okay and then so the second story that this was combined with to create the not true drove. Rolls Royce. Into a pool was that he charged new car to the band. Who refuse to pay for it. So Moon drove it into a muddy pond in his garden and call the dealer to come pick it up. So it's too true. Stories rolled into one story right. That's not true. Yeah Oh yeah. It's incredible and that's not our last Keith. Moon rumor either. Nope our next one which is true now okay. I should say with the caveat that these are true and false based on articles that we both read and so there might be room for error. So this is just like fun. Yeah it's just fun and it's inauguration. It's yeah just what we found. No one has photographic evidence. It's just fun fun so I hope you guys out. Don't get angry and you're like that never happened or that did happen bub-bubba so like don't don't get mad at us is just this is just meant to be fun and a little bit looser so and just for us to kind of talk off the cuff so Our next one. Which is true. Is All about Ozzy Osbourne. Oh my so ozzy. Osbourne achieved infamy overnight after incident on January twentieth nineteen eighty two in Des Moines Iowa during the height of his drug problem. That is putting it mildly. Ozzy Osbourne was performing when an audience member through a bat on stage. The singer believing that it was rubber and I do believe that he thought it was robbery. I don't think he would have. I believe that too. Yeah bid off its head as a stunt only to find out that the bat was real and alive not only that but as he declares in liner notes to the two thousand two reissue of diary of a madman. The Bat wound up biting him as well which forced him to be treated for rabies. The incident fed his rock madman legend along with the one time that he bit off the head of a dove which basically what happened was when he first met with Columbia records in Nineteen ninety-one. He took a live dub into the meeting with him and bit off the head in front of the horrified executives. Awful yeah so crazy man out. I wouldn't sign him to a record deal yeah. He was also arrested for urinating on. Or near the Alamo. And while on tour with Motley crue he allegedly got into a one upmanship. Dare contest with Nikki. Nikki six and I'm sorry that is at is a contest. I would never even get close to know but he ended up snorting a line of ants better than biting the heads off live animals. I think though no okay. The dove thing is kind of unforgivable. The bad thing is understandable. But you snorted a line of ants would if they were fire ants also. You just have ants in your sinuses now. I'm sad I read that. Oh my God you have to elaborate immediately regretted it I apologize. You should move on move on Thanksgiving on next all right. Here's a good one Kay cass. Elliot choke to death on a ham sandwich. Can We bury this now? Please yeah really not cool. I don't like this lie at all. This rumors terrible are you. Doing Mama Cass. Yes I am all right so this came up. Following a series of sold out gigs. In London Mama Cass retired to her apartment where she died of heart failure on July. Twenty Ninth Nineteen Seventy Four. A rumor spread very quickly that she died from choking on a ham sandwich which is just a horrible thing to say you know yes. She was a little overweight route. So it's believed that the rumor started when Dr Anthony. Greenberg the physician who I examined CASS. After her death wrote she appeared to have been eating a ham sandwich and drinking coca cola while lying down a very dangerous thing to do. She seemed to have choked on her ham sandwich. So so great job Dr Greenberg for that one. But point of fact her autopsy showed that a heart problem leading to heart. Failure was the cause of death not a sandwich or any other item lodged in her throat or trachea. She had actually had very little to eat the day before she died like her stomach was pretty clear. No dead I'm actually going to piggyback and double down on a Mama Cass and Keith Moon. True story with us. They were not but they did die in the same apartment. Yeah rockstars have been taken from US. Way Too young and it just so happens that two brilliant musicians died in the same apartment at the same age of thirty two Singer Harry Nilsson I love. That's my alarm. Every morning I wake up to his song. GotTa get out okay. If you've seen the show Russian dolls you'll know why I wake up to a song every day but He renounced his London flat to friends when he was traveling. And so on June twenty ninth nineteen seventy four Mama Cass of the Mamas. And the Papas was staying in the flat while she was on tour and died of heart failure in her sleep and on September seventh. Nineteen seventy eight Keith. Moon of the WHO overdosed on a sedative in that very same apartment which is eerie because they died in the same apartment under the same landlord at the same age. How crazy is that? That's a little

"In des Moines Iowa I went all over the state go to public schools churches community centers tonight to choose who they want to challenge president trump in the twenty twenty election there are more democratic candidates than ever to choose from this year eleven to be exact among them former mayor of south bend Indiana P. booted judge who joins us now at Smokey row mere booted thanks for getting up early to be here thanks for a man who more happy talk to stay so last month you were leading in the polls here in Iowa things according to those polls have stagnated a bit can you explain what you see as your challenges for in the state well they're always gonna be ups and downs in the polls but what we see right now is that voters are are getting ready caucus goers for their final decision and the same folks that I would see over the summer the fall saying things like that was pretty good you're in my top seven now now it's down to decision time and even today there are caucus goers making up their minds they want to know of course that they're choosing somebody who will make a good president also somebody who can win I think that the burning priority for so many not just Democrats but a lot of independence and some Republicans I meeting is just find the nominee who can defeat Donald Trump our challenge in our opportunity is to prove that mine is the best campaign to do that and of course nationally speaking this is the first opportunity to really prove it because we can demonstrate that we have not only the message about the kind of campaign organization to deliver success but can you do that without African American support and I know this question has has followed you throughout your campaign but you have consistently polled at one percent or even zero percent with African American voters around the country and you have faced the critique that you weren't connecting with them this critique it's been ongoing for more than for it for years and she declared why haven't you been able to change their perception of you so the African American voters who know me best in my own community for example or supporting the in many of my most visible supporters here in Iowa are black elected officials now as we move into the south I think they're in particular we see why it's so important to demonstrate that we have a campaign that can go on to win there's a lot of healthy skepticism and in a moment like this no one is feeling the pain of living under the trump presidency more than Americans of color but you as I speak to them so often is to make sure that we have the campaign that can win which when your new you have to demonstrate on the ground in the places where you've been campaigning the most so our first opportunity to really prove it not just to tell that to show that we've got the campaign best position to deliver that when that starts right here and I'll looking forward if you don't come out on top or in the number two spot here in Iowa do you keep running we certainly need a good finish here in Iowa and that's exactly what I think is about to happen are organizer's are so talented and so fired up and our volunteers have brought amazing energy to this we got precinct captains everywhere in this state city running was on what else you was at all it pundits decide where to go posted in what percentages amount to what headlines tomorrow the point is we need a good finish here in Iowa and that's exactly what we're building in these final hours presidential candidate former mayor of south bend people digits thank you so much for your time thanks for a male yeah that's this is NPR news the listen to KQED public radio good morning let's check in with Ted Anthony he's going to the Calder Cup final hi Ted and good morning unfortunately good morning for that a Renda commute.

"I are at Smokey row this fantastic coffee shop in downtown des Moines Iowa we have a live audience in front of us hello everybody thanks for coming out this morning I know many of you're gonna have a long night of caucusing so we appreciate your waking up so early yeah we're covering the caucuses it is of course the start of the presidential campaign season officially and Rachel last time I was here four years ago there was a lot of suspense in both parties right not really the case this year for Republicans president trump pretty much has a lock on the nomination at this point for the GOP but democratic candidates have been I mean basically living in Iowa recently according to the des Moines register campaigns have held roughly two thousand five hundred campaign events since the start of the twenty twenties like what is counting but whose cash would register is counting and we have the register's political editor here with us Rachel Stephan burger here Rachel thanks morning or definitely count count every so many numbers and another editor with us as well and your senior political editor dominical Montanaro is at the table Hey there to go so I want to start out asking a question that many of them Ste why does I will get this job no offense everyone in the live audience but he they wondered there is a critique as to whether or not a state frankly that is eighty five percent white it does not represent the Democratic Party in the country in America in twenty twenty all whites the first contest in the primary season we talked to a restaurant owner in Davenport Iowa his name is Dan bush he defended I was positioned let's listen in the we'll talk on the other side not only is Iowa true purple state but beyond that it's like I think that people here are just a lot more open to sitting down and talking things out and and and working toward solutions I think it's part of that blue collar you know middle America work ethic and I think that's why I we should be considered to be the first state to do it because we do have people that's really do care and and and care about each other Rachel is the right is Iowa trooper posting doesn't deserve to be first well let's start with I was first because frankly we're pretty good at it the voters here have spent more than a year studying these candidates they go to the events they read their position papers and so they really dive in deeply it is part of the I. what culture to get to know and to vet people who want to be president and certainly there been questions in there were at the start of the cycle will people still come to Iowa will anyone care about Iowa small state in the Midwest that's not demographically representative of the rest of the country will turns out with those two thousand five hundred presidential event came they came and they refuse to leave since twenty eighteen they didn't go to California even though California's early voting starts today they spent less time in New Hampshire the presidential candidates decided that I will really matters and Iowans responded it has been stunning to see just how much money the candidates have spent in Iowa compared to New Hampshire I mean they've spent almost a little more thing now at this point the fifty million dollars on TV ads digital radio cable and you know I mean just think Joe Biden for example he's he has spent three million dollars in Iowa on ads.

Iowa Poll cancelled after Buttigieg supporter says candidate's name was omitted during a poll call

"Us this is the pull from the des Moines register tell us a little bit about it and why it's considered to be a pretty important poll what all this the reason is considered to be important is because of the poster infielder based in west des Moines Iowa houses early track record especially when it comes to predicting the winner of the democratic caucus she missed the the twenty sixteen Cockett had Donald Trump ahead and of course Ted Cruz ended up defeating Donald Trump in Iowa four years ago but in the democratic race she's nailed every single one going back to nineteen eighty eight and a lot of folks were eagerly anticipating this call is going to be on the front page of today's the morning register the Sunday edition which is something that a lot of perspective and likely caucus goers and I were going to read be there was going to be an hour's worth of programming last night on CNN to unveil the new poll results and then all of a sudden at eight PM central time when folks were tuning in or going to the one register website to see the results of the poll instead they got a statement about why those two news organizations were not releasing the data all right so why were they releasing at well it all goes back to a complaint that was registered by the judges campaign I was told that on the early Saturday evening so early last evening just a few hours before the release digits campaign contacted the news organizations that sponsor the poll to say that one of its supporters had reported to them that they were called by the poster to participate in the poll earlier in the week and when the poster says for who who do you support in the caucuses and read a list of candidates the people who did his name was not among the list of candidates they right obviously that if the candidates left off the list that could have an impact on the results and the local news organizations and the culture and soldier went back checked out kind of what might have happened and determine that one of the interviewers in an effort to see them the monitor that they use to help them conduct a poll and register the response of the people they're talking to you have in hands the zoom on the monitor and that had cut off the last candidate's name on the list of candidates list is private randomized by the computer for each separate survey so that is not to bias the results by reading some names first consistently and reading some names last consistently so we can clear whether this would have had a systematic effect but basically knowing that the news organizations decided they didn't have one hundred percent confidence in the data and they chose not to release the call together ahead of tomorrow's caucuses now I saw a lot of reaction to this on social media which is probably not the best place to gauge reasonable response to continues events but what have you been hearing in terms of reaction from the campaigns of various camp every years candidate's supporters well look the the poll can be make or break for some candidates if not you know the caucuses are a unique event you don't go into a voting booth and cast a private secret ballot it's all public it's all among your neighbors who live in your community Anna Kendrick's late momentum poll is measured by the coal and also the good server news cycle and positive press that I can get if he or she appears to be quite a quick search in the final days of the race the that momentum so what this will do is it will give us we we you said there were a few pulled out this week this is the one that I think everyone was waiting for so we're a little in the dark when it comes to the the expected results tomorrow night I'm not sure that's a bad thing it also gives us sort of starved that that opportunity to get momentum attendance will have to do it all on their own out there today listing the state traveling all over trying to rally their supporters the last minute not only to get people to vote for them tomorrow night but also to come out entirely you know going to be twenty degrees tomorrow night and I would have to show up at seven PM local time **** it you have to stay for awhile caucuses are real commitment and these candidates are trying to rally their supporters to get them to come

"Everywhere in seventy seven WABC apps it'll be back on Thursday but tonight we have the big debate in des Moines Iowa and it is well they got sick people up there it's gonna be more the say guess what they're all white you know is not gonna be there the race baiting a loser the spoiled rich kid court Cory Booker he's not going to be not that clowns I could be there but unless you include the Elizabeth Warren as a native American it's an all white field but the Democrats are actually call each other bigots over this whole well that's good yet you know let let them get all of the instead of pointing fingers at somebody else it's going to be nice to see the point because now it's getting down to the nitty gritty so not I have to go with each other but again despite going at each other no one's going to bring up no one is going to bring up this bail reform crisis that we have no we don't wandering up not a peep again is going to be brought up about anti semitism for they're not gonna bring up the roaring economy they're not gonna say Hey aren't you worried that your policies will impact this great economy that we have right now would never if that was gonna be on CNN you get to me yeah we're gonna ask how many times you think a drum beats his wife well how much do you hate Donald Trump yep those are the kind of question you gonna get but the fact that the the media the cable news media is lamenting the fact that these people are all white I mean again these are Democrats pointing fingers at their own take a listen to this a lot of folks once again pointing out that as stat given so why I mean you've got you've got another can of Cola dropping out of the race time I hear this is dog Castro's gone now Cory Booker's daughter going to be an overwhelmingly white debate a white all white debate how one of the most diverse fields in the history of the Democratic Party came down to white candidates at the top of it how do you like that that's a that's only happened they the identity how about the best person win this is all right how about that hello what was the king says we judge people by the content of their character not by the color of their skin Hey it goes in line as far as I'm concerned with what we were just talking about earlier about the Academy Awards if you're going to tell me well we don't have enough women do is no woman director there weren't weren't enough people of color so all I'm saying is this he could only be X. amount of nominations so who do you think should be nominated right well you can't say that so the point is that you have nothing to complain about exactly right if you're not going to tell me surfing that didn't stop complaining times it just doesn't fall the way you want to know it doesn't I mean that's just the way it is I mean that you know it's not this not necessarily races it's it's a year yeah they want equality of results not equality of opportunity that's that's been the longstanding debate for years and years I will quote as I said earlier the great Denzel Washington and this was like back in two fifteen at two sixteen if you're looking for an excuse you'll find one can't live like that do the best you can do a full well said then sell and dull Cory Booker this guy he's speaking of a race Spader's this guy's again just the the biggest phony race spayed or he would he would he's a lawyer to anyone to deprive for remember a cabin all the the Supreme Court justice of due process they don't want to give any due process I just wanted to kick him out there to bar him from being the Supreme Court justice anyway listen to this guy this is why he's not in the race any longer one day one I will make sure that number one week and the policies and the customs and border policies are violating human rights can't be blind to the impact of generations of racism and white supremacy that were written into our laws for centuries we as a nation have not yet truly acknowledging grappled with racism and white supremacy this team to this country's founding continues to persist in those deep racial disparities inequalities today when the in the past came forward I can't listen that's good but but there you have it I mean I sold the democratic voters rejected identity put that type of identity politics we have to identify the the the the the the the races in the country well I mean just that that that guy he lied about where we came from me try to pretend like get a see that he comes from the hood he grew up in a white town in New Jersey with some very well to do parents and he was he is always talking about yeah well where I come from remember that and with that he moved into the the place yeah well I was mayor any left Newark a mess a yes vote will she handles the places it's horrible he did nothing for it so anyway and he's the biggest Wall Street **** out there he he takes more money from Wall Street than any of the Senate senator in the in the in the Senate it used to be Hillary Clinton you have more in common with the people in the work that he does so do you you're right right so we both have yet the project not all but not you down that Sir is about that Abby but you know what he ended up out of the race and that's where he should be good riddance and bye bye so long farewell run those aerial Dawson just broke up with and that's breaking news and the "In mid January in des Moines Iowa for perspective on I like stone ABC news at Loyola Marymount university in LA couple of weeks ago we reported on the resignation of Chicago police superintendent Eddie Johnson and the uncertainty surrounding that city's crime and law enforcement this week we're gonna focus on another American city where crime in twenty nineteen is on the rise Baltimore it's got a long time ABC news affiliate their W. B. A. L. I've talked with reporter bill yucca bus what is going on in the city of Baltimore can you explain to us yeah we're probably going to have about three hundred twenty homicides this year so far and that's a big number only because it's it's happened almost all of the years in the recent past and it's something that the city has had really a difficult time getting under control one of the things that the biggest problem here seems to be as consistent so you know we have four police commissioners here in the past three years commissioner Michael Harrison is leading the department now he took over for Gary toggle who left awhile ago who took over for a commissioner d'souza who was indicted on tax fraud so there's been a number of leadership changes of course as you folks have followed on A. B. C. news we've also had some turmoil with the mayor's office the former mayor Catherine Pugh I recently indicted on some some tax charges and and that sort of stuff so it's been a difficult sort of transition for the city and and again the killings as have not stopped I mean since ever since the riots about five years ago but things have really been spiking here in Baltimore that really was sort of the start of a turn for Baltimore wasn't it those those rights when they happen there yeah absolutely it has been and that's really been the biggest problem because of the number of illegal drugs on the streets as well as the number of guns is illegal guns are just a big problem here just about every homicide you investigate here always has an illegal gun typically over some sort of drug deal gone bad those are all sorts of familiar themes with things I'm in addition you know non fatal shootings are also up we've had seven hundred and thirty five non fatal shooting so far this year so imagine if every one of those was a homicide I mean look at the no homicide numbers we would have here in the city and and really one of the things that a lot of the police commissioners all of them really have credited even the mayors of said you know we have such a good hospital system here in Baltimore because we have Johns Hopkins is some of the other big hospitals here you know we see a lot of trouble so the doctors are very good at saving lives so if maybe the doctors weren't as good here in Baltimore you know maybe we wouldn't have much higher homicide rate but but so far those numbers have been something that they just can't seem to get down now the the governor of Maryland Larry Hogan recently announced over twenty eight million dollars in state funding to help fight crime specifically in the city of Baltimore what was the reaction to that and do you think even that much money would do much good well it's certainly something that's been a welcome in the city of the city's always looking for more money in the crime find whether or not it's you know more equipment for police officers are more prosecutors you know some say the prosecutor's offices you're shorthanded because they can't go after a lot of the criminals that are on the street because they simply don't have the manpower a lot of these crimes were committed by juvenile offenders which is a whole other situation that the governor has wanted to straighten out they brought in the state prosecutor's office to help the city prosecutors in these cases because witness intimidation is such a big problem in fact part of the twenty million dollars he's going to go to pay for witness relocation you know the stop snitching mentality which was a big part of the wire which many of our listeners may have seen off the HBO series a number of years the wire is very real and in some cases like cases now it's worse than it has been in the past in fact commissioner Harrison told me a couple of months ago that he watched the wire he said I was fascinated with the body said now is that these are real people that are involved so the twenty some odd million dollars of the governor is going to dump into this program you know he's hoping that it'll help that also comes along with some legislative stuff that has to be done he thinks that there needs to be stronger sentences for people who commit a crime with an illegal gun bill thank you so much thanks Terry part.

"Public school educators. Want the freedom to be able to do their jobs by their own lights and not have their job performance reduced to a number on a page. So that let's talk about that kind of free. And let's talk about the freedom for women to make their own reproductive health care choices without a male politician and president. That's what I think it needs to talk about freedom in its in its richer, thicker sense, and is not going to happen unless we're out there to advocate for it. Because the right kind of government policy can secure that freedom just as much as the wrong kind of policy can infringe upon it. So let's talk about freedom. Let's talk about security as a veteran. I am. So sick of the idea that security or patriotism belong to one part? These are American values and the flag that was stitched to my shoulder. Actually, it was okay on when I went into Afghantistan was not the property of one party or the other party. But I will say that only one party seems to be concerned with some of the security threats that are going to face in the twenty first century. You know, we need to come out and talk about how there's more to security and then putting up a wall from sea to shining sea. Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buddha. Judge live in Des Moines Iowa. Global security means that we were actually competing with the Chinese model, which is being held up as an alternative because America, look so divided confusing week. And right now, we need to talk about cybersecurity at a time when talking about somebody can't put up a wall to deal with time cybersecurity threats are only going to increase it would help if we had people in charge. You understood what type of security is. It would also help when we're getting ready to deal with what I think is security challenge of our time to be ready to act on climate and to define climate.

"Am a graphic designer from Des Moines Iowa, and I'm falling Dave Ramsey's plan. And I've gotten to the point where I've got my house refinanced and get paid off and just have the house to pay off at school and pretty slowly. So I'm trying to earn more income, and I feel like I should be earned quite a bit more after ten years on the job than I am now. So I'm kind of at a crossroads as to what I should do scrap my career or my education field and try something different or keep going. I think kinda just suck at the hustle. And I'm looking for some direction. Okay. All right. Well, let's start with some added girls because the way to go on the Dave Ramsey baby steps and getting to where you're just working on paying off a house. Can we just acknowledge that that's a lot of hard work? That's a big time accomplishment. And I just wanna say way to go, Emily because you're way ahead of most people in United States. So so get a little pep in your step. Thank you. All right. And to keep that, right? He do my debt free scream or I can't wait for that to happen. But let's talk about this crossroads. So really? It's it's it's about the I need is you wanna make some more money that you're just kind of Itchen you've been doing it for ten years. You wanna make more money? That's that's the first challenge. And in the second challenge is well, do I go do something else or do I stay in graphic design? So let's let's stay there for a moment. Do you love graphic design? I do have a word it pretty rewarding. And it's fun and interesting and they've verse but. I just can't seem to get my pay up. Okay. Well, let's talk about that. So we know you like to work. That's what I wanted to know. I because you could do that work in a lot of different places. Graphic design is a pretty valuable position you can do that for a lot of different organizations if you like the work, and so I wanna talk about you can't seem to get that race has this been a conversation. You had with your superior. How many times over ten years I'd say about six or seven we have annual reviews, and I it's just something that's been kind of. I kind of joke about it a little bit. And I've also said that I mean an increase, and they gave me small increases, but I have a degree in. I make about the thirty four thousand. So it's kind I don't know if I should compare myself to my friends, but they're plumbers interpret divers and they're making. In sixty five. So well, that's okay. So let me stop you right there. Because comparison to friends and family is a cancer. It will eat your soul alive, and those are different jobs. So you can't compare a graphic designer job to a trucker. You just can't do. So what I want to know is have you done any research about your type of work a graphic designer with your amount of experience. Have you done any market research to see what is an industry average for your amount of experience in the type of work..
