"We got married. We stayed at home for the next year, like everybody else. I couldn't go on the road and do my job, which was really weird, and now that I'm back on the road, I do not take it for granted anymore. It is such a beautiful thing to come out and make people laugh and to add some sort of levity to the world. I love Chicago. I love coming here. It's one of my favorite cities. There was only one city on this tour. I was nervous to go back to, and that was Des Moines. 'cause last summer was there, it was in the middle of winter, and I forgot that in the Midwest when it is winter time, and people are freezing. They get hammered. Hammered. It is too cold to go outside. There is nothing else to do. So I get to the venue and girls are coming out of the bathroom, like this. There's toilet paper on the bottom of their shoes. It is 7 p.m.. That is where we are starting this night. So I get out on stage and they are just wanting to party. They're sinning, shot after shot. And I like drinks, but my vice is milkshakes, so I'm good. And they keep wanting me to drink fireball whisky. They love fireball with you. I think it tastes like a bottle of gasoline with a stick of big red chewing on plopped in the middle. I'm good. They're like, what? She don't like fireball. She doesn't like fireball shit. They can't offer them. This information. So now as an audience, they only care about trying to figure out what drink to send me next. So they're like, all right, okay, she'll have thermal. All right, oh, vodka. Yeah, Santa, sitting, all these micro cranberries start coming from the stage. And I'm like, I'm not really a vodka person. They're like, what? She don't like vodka. Shit. She don't like vodka. All right, oh, beer, yes. All these beers start coming to the stage. I'm like, I never acquired a taste for it. They're like, well, that's surprising. I know, I look like somebody that would pound a beer, take the can and crush it on my forehead. And still recycle. I'm now taking these drinks, they've passed up. I'm passing it back out to them. I am only making them drunk or they go, please, for the love of God, tell us what you drink. You can not leave Iowa without having a drink with us. I'm like, that's a weird rule, but all right. I'm trying to think of a drink that's going to take a while to make because then I can do my job, tell some jokes. I go a sangria. I forgot where I was. I was like, all right, an old fashioned. I assume they've got to find a mixologist with a little mustache. He's got a freezer or a dice cube bitter, slicing orange. It'll take a while. Two minutes later, these gorgeous old fashioned show up. I'm like, all right, fine. This is going to make you happy. I grabbed this drink that's meant to be sipped and it just down the gullet. They are so pumped. You would think I had just competed in a decathlon. So they're having a good time. We get back into the show or laughing the show's great, a little bit later on. They start getting restless again. I'm like, what now? I'll look back and there's this older woman trying to make her way through the crowd. She's got a short spiky gray hair. She's got this worn face like she has seen some shit. She's got a leather vest on. I assume she's got a dream catcher in her car. She's walking very confidently towards the stage. And she lands right there at the end of the stage, and I look and I see that she is holding a smirnoff ice. And she looks at me and she goes, hey, my name's Linda. And you are about to get ice. I grabbed this smirnoff ice and I said, what time capsule did you dig this out of? Thinking the whole crowd would agree. They start chanting. Iced iced iced iced ice they are relentless. I'm like, what is iced? I have no idea what they are talking about. This very sweet Midwestern woman stands up. She goes, getting eyes is when you get down on your knees, you take that bottle of smirnoff ice, you drink that whole bottle all in one gulp

Newt Gingrich Shares His Diagnosis for the Midterms

"Very special guest right now who really understands what's going on in America. Mister speaker, Newt Gingrich is with us, mister speaker, welcome back to the program. It's great to be with you. It's always fun because you do such a great show. Well, thank you. I appreciate that. And love your commentary, especially recently. So mister speaker, it seems as if in the last couple of weeks things have really turned positive for Republicans going into the midterms. We're 34 days out. It seemed like the Democrats spending spree over the summer and they're kind of synthetic raising of their candidates. It's collapsing all around them. What's your diagnosis heading in November where we stand right now? Well, we're about where I thought we would be back in the spring. When you have this level of a cost of living crisis, you have the price of food going up 13 and a half percent in one year. You have the gasoline prices going back up. I paid $5 and 5 cents a gallon last Saturday. You have crime and all the big cities. You go to, for example, the race in Pennsylvania. Yes. Philadelphia just had its 1000th carjacking of the year, a record. And they still have three more months. People 70% of the people in Philadelphia say crime is the biggest problem they've got. Well, that really undermines the Democrats. So you look at those, then you look at immigration, the amount of fentanyl. You realize that a 100,000 Americans a year are dying of drug overdose. That's twice the deaths of the entire Vietnam War. And all these things are coming together, you know, really simple way. It ain't working. Big government socialism isn't working. Joe Biden isn't working. Chuck Schumer isn't working. Nancy Pelosi is in working. And I discovered yesterday. I was in Des Moines, Cindy axton, who is the democratic congresswoman from Des Moines. Was supposed to be voting in August. She signed a note saying that because of COVID, she couldn't come. She was actually a vacationing in Paris. When she was supposed to be voting.

"To try to save $1 million on repairs for those homes but critics say it will take longer for rangers to respond to emergencies such as accidents or power outages in state parks join now by Jason bardsley state trooper from Des Moines who was also president of the state police officers council that represents Iowa park rangers to perpetually thank so much for being with us Thank you for having me What do you contend will be the effect of park rangers not being able to live in the park So one of the major issues that we have right now is just the understaffing of park rangers in state parks now During high peak seasons they are there Numerous times over the years where our rangers have been at the houses People come to the houses for a variety of thing from anything from a true emergency to something with their camping experiences or they need help just in the park itself By not having staffing there if somebody needs something then they're going to have to reach out to 9-1-1 We're not quite sure how that process is working It hasn't been explained That's our concern The Iowa department of natural resources says that they don't see any benefit to having rangers live in the parks That it's expensive to maintain those houses and and only the third of the parks have onsite housing for rangers anyway I wonder how you'd respond Absolutely The park housing has been a part of the state parks for approximately 50 years Mostly some of these houses were built back in the 60s For the last 20 years the department of natural resources in their own policy is said the objective of the part bureau is to have at least one house in each park occupied full time per employee The citizens of Iowa like having that extra enforcement in their parks We have some parks that have millions of people come through them And removing park rangers from their state housing will make state parks less safe for iowans John and I have to tell you most state park systems don't have rangers With housing provided in the parks I wonder if they've confronted the kind of problems you say Iowa would I can not speak to other states on how they do with their housing All I can say is this for Iowa 50 some years ago the state deemed it as a responsibility to the state parks and if this plan goes through and they remove them Are we going to be back here 5 ten years now trying to correct a problem that took place this year May I ask how much is a park ranger make Park ranger makes approximately mid 70s And if they get free housing now but then have to pay for it That's a big bite out of the budget isn't it So with the rangers if you were hired with the intention of living in that housing some of these you're in a high metropolitan area or a high visited park It's trying to find affordable living in that area The cost of housing is soaring through the roof let alone trying to find a house and then you also have some of these parks are out and most of these parks are out in rural Iowa where trying to find something even close to the house so they ranger can respond May not be physically possible So you could be anywhere from 1520 30 miles away from some of these parks and now you have a response time of 30 plus minutes if a ranger gets called to get back to these parts and take a look and see what's going on It's spread it into the state police officers council they represent Iowa park rangers Thanks so much for being with us Thank you I appreciate it.

"You're never going to be free as long as you're buying leads. Ask anybody who's been buying leads from Zillow. Zillow's changed the rules of many millions of times and there's all kinds of consternation about that. You guys all should know that. If you're new in the business, here's what should be your own personal rule of your operational rule number one. Don't buy business, learn how to be a proactively generator. What's a proactively generator? It's somebody who knows how to directly contact solicit communicate with an owner of a house that is already has their hand in their error saying, yes, I want to sell my house. And I want you guys to think about the insanity of this. As I present it, because this really is quite funny. Last time we did this, we were in Des Moines, Iowa. And we were staying in front of a room. It was less than 50 people, and we were going on our Harris U.S. tour. And all these people were agents and successful and who was a heath that was going to close something like $1.8 billion in real estate and commissions. And he's very successful. So the rest of it were as agents and friends. And I asked the question, I said, how much would you guys pay me for a list of sellers per lead, let's say, for a list of sellers right now who want to sell their house? How much would you give me? How much would you pay me? Where 100% of the people on that list definitely want to sell their house? And most of them are already conceded to a commission. Most of them basically are already are they're motivated. They're going to tell you what their pre qualification is. This is the very now. Here's what happened. I said, would you know how much are you willing to pay for a listing referrals? And I here's how I did it. I said, what's the average sale price in your marketplace? And it was 400,000. I said, so what's the average commission they told me? I said, so what are you willing to pay for a listing referral from a very motivated seller that's going to list with you at the growing rate of commission in the sale price is going to be 400 grand? What would you pay me be careful right here? What would you pay me for that lead? And what would you pay me for that referral? And I heard 25% all the way up to 40%. 40% is what some of these big referral companies are trying to charge agents. And it's not an exclusive lead either. So I say, okay, so you're telling me and based on the commission that you're receiving that you're willing to pay me thousands of dollars for this listing lead and just the way it is. And some of them said yes. I said, well, here's the phone number and here it is. And you want to know where I got this lead, and they said, yes, I said, well, about ten minutes ago, on our way to this country club, where Julie and I are presenting to you right now, we drove past it for sale by owner and we took a picture of the for sale by owner. And here's the phone number. That right there is a person who has their hand in the air right now saying yes, I want to sell my house. And you just told me you'd be willing to pay me something like $4000 to that lead. Pay up..

"Dot org to receive any advertised product. You must become a member of pin fed. Federally ensured by NC UA. The city of Des Moines, Iowa has been remaking itself for several decades as a center of the insurance industry and data processing. But it has had to contend with a silent invisible threat and overwhelming stitch that drifts through downtown on certain days. While the city's tried to address the smell for several years, it's recently embarked on a new strategy that officials hope will beat the problem once and for all. Suing Donovan is the neighborhood inspection division administrator for the city and is helping to resolve this stinky situation. She joins us now. Hi Sue. Hi. So, okay. How would you describe this male? Well, most people complain about a smell that is akin to burning rotting flesh. Oh my goodness. I don't know what that smells like. Well, it's not pleasant. So like food burning? Well, it's coming from a rendering plant where they render down carcasses. That is one of the alleged sources of the odor. We also have some meat processing plants in the city. So it seems like we're not really talking just about one smell. We're talking about a lot of different smells that people may be picking up on. I think yes, you're talking about several different smells that are intermingle at times. How serious is this smell? And is it worse on some days versus others? Yeah, it can be worse on some days. There are weather events that happen that trap the air over the city, and it can't move, and so it builds up and it can get quite annoying. Has the smell always been a problem or is it getting worse or is it that the dynamics of the area are changing? I would say it's the dynamics of the downtown area that are changing. Over the last 20 years, we've had a surge in multi-family residential units. So when you increase the number of people living closer to the plants, it generates more complaints. And so they're kind of outsiders who are complaining about the smells because they're not used to it. Well, that's probably one source of frustration for new people who move into the area. You know, I grew up on a farm and we were used to hog confinement smell and it was the smell of money. But that isn't necessarily everybody's view of the different odors that they're experiencing. What has been done to try to address this? We have an odor hotline and people call in and they say, I smell something. If we get ten of these calls with the exact same descriptor and there's a list of them that they can choose from, then we send somebody out trying to find the source of the smell. That's really hard to do because when changes, so the thought is if we can get a scientific study, find out where the sources of the odor are, get an idea of what a acceptable level of odor disbursement is. And then ask those companies to use best business practice to reach that cap that we would have a better solution to the problem going forward. Is the neighborhood inspection division administrator for Des Moines, Iowa? Thanks for joining.

The Simple Life: Sweet Home Croatia

"Tired of the rat race mid western mom. Jennifer wilson decided up route or young family and seek out something simpler so she moved her husband and two kids to the croatian mountain village. Her great grandparents to learn what they would have taught her about life. Jennifer makes sense of her family's adventures in her book called running away to home. She joins us right now from the iowa public radio studio in des moines to tell us what she and her family gained from living in croatia. And how it's changed them now that they're back in america jennifer. Thanks for being with us. Thank you so much for having me. So you took your family from iowa to croatia. Set up the story here. When did this happen. Why did you do it. How long you stay well. It was in two thousand eight when the economy was melting down here in america we were really feeling a lot of restlessness at the time. So we sort of collectively decided as a family to take a big risk. We decided to get rid of all of our sort of consumerist lifestyle stuff and we took our young family to the ancient croatian mountain village of my ancestors in it was. It was a pretty amazing. Right how long did you stay in. Croatia trump. We were in the country itself for about seven months. The majority of that in the village itself is your husband croatian. Also he's norwegian alsacien but he sort of adopted my ancestors for the time we were in the village. It was really like hitting the reset button for our family. They're in what way. Well jim and i have a fairly modest lifestyle here in the midwest but even a family like us sort of in our american culture tends to super size everything and we were just ready to kind of get away from the american buzz and we went back to the most basic way of living. We were living in a small pen sione in this very small village that felt like it was suspended in amber since my great grandparents left and it really gave us the time and space to connect as a family we wanted less business in our world and we thought there can be no better way of doing that than going to a place where there was really nothing going on We had heard a few things about mirka pie research and a scouting trip and indeed. It was sort of this quiet time outland. It felt like to us

"Say this is the time to to really do those things we always wanted to do. Right and So it's a. It's a chance to really make improvements for organizations our communities in our state country our world. And so i don't think we. I think it's really important that we that we don't miss that moment And i in terms of you know some of the biggest challenges right now Is you know just sort of all the division in our society right now sort of sort of with me or you're against me your blue red. You're democrat or republican. you're rule your urban right. I mean it's sort of this You know the ongoing big sore Which was a book that was written by goldfish up a number of years ago and People look at social media that they agree with. They read the news at the agree with. And you know in so many ways where it should be where we've had we now have more access to information and we've ever had before and ability to critical thinking into Have independent thinking on best ideas and together and finding common ground. It's almost in so many ways that polarization where it's it's it's almost You know again us. Versus blue versus red emigrants is republican urban versus rural on and on and on and And i think as a society we need to find out of work better together and we need to come together and find a lot more common ground Do it seems it's hard. It's hard today than than it's ever been And And again that's it. You know it. Motivates me motivates team in terms of what we can do to play that role In our community. And and i think more and more people more and more leaders need to step up to do that Because it's bad has definitely changed a lot since i could do so less when jade i always end with this. I love to hear how people respond to this question. What do you know for sure about leadership. I'm not sure if. I know for sure about anything but what i what i know for sure about i. Guess what i know for sure about leadership is that you don't have to have a specific background A specific set of traits as leadership traits. I think you can be a wide range of different types of people and be very successful. I think what. I know about effective leaders. You need to be authentic. I'm you can't be something you're not The different leaders all have different strengths. And you gotta play your strengths And you also gotta know what your limitations are and where you need help. Your weakness is all right. I think that's to me has been the most important part of success leader Jim said you get the right people on the bus right. Give people in the right seats. That is the most important thing right you you've got to be able to go and recruit retain those folks that can build out your team bit a really good at things you're not good at And and you've got to rely on down right and you cambio. You can't be afraid to have people on our team or smarter. And and i think that's the key to successful organisations leadership and and you gotta check your ego at the door and and you know just in terms of you know for me when i'm looking for top talent. I'm looking for you know. Not only folks are highly skilled and talented but they also have a hunger for success and humility I think those may excellent teammates and strong leaders themselves. And so again i guess. That's that's what i know that. There is no one great definition of leadership. There's no one great definition of leader but everybody has their strengths and their weaknesses. And you to know what yours are concerned yourself with people who make you better jay. I really appreciate you being on the show..
